As Brazil becomes each time richer, Rio gets even better. Glassy towers, nice condos and old building getting a facelift. The city is also a paradise for the hedonists. Almost everything is permitted in Rio, it has definetely one of the most open-minded and liberal societies. Let´s see a bit of Rio:

But I live far from most of these places.

Seriously one of the best locations for a city in the world if not the best. I hope it stays as beautiful for ever. That one view from the pool looking off into the distant coastline with the raised highway....who needs drugs?

I only say this because people from Niterói often get upset when their city doesn't have its individuality taken in consideration. And I agree with them. They shouldn't be put in the shadow of Rio.

i like Rio, i know it has incredible parties but in this compilation of photos i didn't see the "party town".. do u have more Rio's streetlife pics?? (not from the carnival)..

The layout of Rio is very confusing. I think its a very exotic looking city.

I know it might doesnt have too much thing to do with the thread, but I wanted to add an info about Rio that I have only discovered recently, is that the word "Copacabana" actually doesn't descend from any Brazilian indigenous tribe from that region, which was occupied by guaranis and tupinambas in the past, but for the surprise of many, the word has a quíchua origin, language spoken by tribes who lived in Bolivia.

The word arrived in Rio for only one reason: portuguese traders in the colonial period who used to make expeditions through south-america, made a route once where they left Rio and went to Titicaca lake in Bolivia, where locals had a cult for a divinity called "Copacabana". When these portuguese traders get back to Rio (where their nicknames were "peruleiros") they decided to baptize one neighborhood of the city with "Copacabana", where before had the tupinamba name of "Sacopenapan".

Interesting fact. I read read in a travellers guide that it means "white house" or "house of the white" anything like that...??? :dunno: and that it was some native Brazilian indio language. So this info is wrong? What a shit of a guide! If I should ever go to Rio I will buy another one! :lol:

The "house of the white" refers to the word "Carioca", which is used to identify the inhabitants of Rio.
