Good. That is wonderful news. It's looking as though the nation's government is truly serious about rapidly accomplishing it goals set within it's newly reformed.. strategic foreign policy plans, in which basically state that by the year 2020 they want Nigeria to be the hub of the African continent economically, educationally and militarily.

In Kaduna the continent largest military academy is being constructed and is being earmarked to service the militaries of the entire African continent. Most African nations have already shown interest in sending top military staff members to the institution for acquiring the new sophisticated modern warfare training in which the institution will specialize in. Now with this new science and Tech school designed to also service the entire continent.. Nigeria will certainly become the hub of Advanced educational studies on the continent.

OKONJO-IWEALA: SCIENCE,TECHNOLOGY,ANTIDOTES TO POVERTY IN AFRICA.

Former Minister of Finance and Managing Director, World Bank, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has attributed the poverty plaguing many countries in Africa to lack of science and technology base to solve their problems through innovations.
Okonjo-Iweala who spoke in Abuja at the end of the board meeting of the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) noted that countries that have innovations have been able to use that to solve their problems.
She posited that innovations could lift the people of the continent out of poverty
"Science and Technology is the future of Africa. If you look everywhere, countries that have managed to make a leap have depended on having innovation and applying that innovation to solve their problems. One of the most serious things that have kept us in poverty is the lack of science and technology base- lack of excellence in our work".
"For the first time, it has been decided by all these international supporters and the diaspora of Africa, professors have come together to say we have to put forward this to create a base for our young people to solve this problem and have innovations that can lift us out of poverty".
"It is innovation that led people to discover applications for the computers, it's innovation that led to green revolutions, it's innovation that has led to so many things that have lifted so many people out of poverty," she said.
The institution which is part of the larger Abuja Technology Village was established by the Nelson Mandela Institution in 2007 as the first Pan-African Network of Institutes of Science and Technology and Centres of Excellence located across the continent. It is being funded by the World Bank Group, amongst other development institutions.
AUST has developed extensive links with the African scientific Diaspora and is able to count on substantial pool of scientists and engineers teaching and conducting research in the best universities across the world.
Strong partnerships have already been established with the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Cape Town and with Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT) and with the AIST affiliate centre- the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
THISDAY gathered that 50 per cent of those admitted into postgraduate studies as pioneer students are from Nigeria with some 30 per cent from Ghana. The remaining 20 per cent is being shared amongst other African countries.

Is it AIST or AUST?

In other words is it an institute or a university?

There seems to be a wide discrepency between Fuksas' design and the buildings shown above as part of the (already constructed?) phase 1... I hope Fuksas' design is adhered to as much as possible, because it has the potential of adding character and designer-edge to Abuja which is currently lacking.

It`s a project for the African continent, the AIST(African Institute Of Science And Technology). The Nigerian branch rather annexe or headquarters is called the AUST(African university Of Science And Technology).

Furthermore, the images you posted above show some renders of another architect's submission to the NMI competition committee, which didn't actually win the competition. Therefore I think the images are misleading because they imply they're part of the AUST project, which clearly they are not.

Can you prove to us how the renderings are misleading?

Those renderings are designed by the Italian `Arup’s designs`and the work is carried out by Architect Massimiliano Fuksas ( http://www.fuksas.it/ ).

Visit Masimiliano Fuksas' webpage and take a look at his design which won the competition.

Then visit Europa Concorsi website and search "AIST" competition entries webpage, you will find the images you posted but under another architects/submission name.

An architectural competition has one outcome (winner). In the case of AIST, the committee selected Fuksas' design and not the submission you posted above in the message dated Aug 2, 10:16PM.

Other architects who lost the competition include Rafael Viñoly and Rem Koolhaas (both are famous and very successful especially the latter who wrote a book about Lagos in 2005, and suggested its perceived chaos is more orderly than most people thought over the years).

Very unfortunate that you see my remarks as "complaining", since the images you posted do not relate to the actual "ongoing" project of the thread! Would you please remove them so that visitors of this thread will not be confused in the future by looking at Allies and Morrison's renders (Which is a failed submission).

Very alarming, because it shows that the people at AUST are clueless as to how their campus will look early in the next decade. Also, it confirms my fears that there might not be a correlation between the few buildings of the phase 1 (shown above) and Fuksas' very intruiguing designs.

Yes,the forum is mainly about Aust but you can`t talk about AUST without mentioning AIST.They are like mother and child in relationship. The AIST is the main project designed for the Africa continent which one of the campuses is the AUST in Abuja.The brain behind the project is the iconic leader Nelson Madela of South Africa, for the development of science and technology in the continent.

Going back to the project, the design competition for AIST, Abuja in Nigeria that was won by Massimiliano Fuksa, the references to the website becomes obvious for facts about how the ongoing project is being carried out. From what am seeing here, having tried to take a critical look at the project(Possibly the help of Zexyworm will be needed here -as he`s an architect by profession), none of the buildings has taking any form as presented in the renderings. The renderings projected very large buildings in large expanse of land yet looking at the very construction from the photos above one is quick to conclude the project lack some fundament administration in the construction of the building projects. For example, in the renderings the buildings are storey buildings yet on the photos of the constructed ones they are single floor.

Zexyworm, can you shed some light on that based on your experience as an architect?

Those pictures above look like staff living quarters (and likely for non-academic staff), and I suspect that they are not included in the renderings. If you actually visit the site itself in Abuja, there are a lot of foundation work being done but I do not think that any of the main buildings are up yet.

The campus is not that too bad. I think I like it. More need to be done in the area of tuition which I thought is too expensive for average individual student. The focus on the best students to be accepted into courses in the school will cause lopsidedness in the any field of which there are student who are genius in particular area that might be good in other leaving them out of project. The school has to rethink on that.
