Al Marjaz park will be linked directly to Khalid Lagoon in Sharjah, which will become the waterfront of the park.
Subcontractors appointed for Al Majaz Park project
by Elizabeth Broomhall on July 5, 2010
Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) has appointed two subcontractors to work on its new Al Majaz Park project, the construction of which started last week.
Sharjah Contract Company will be doing the roadworks for the project, whilst Sharjah municipality will be handling the soft landscape, a source revealed to Construction Week.
One of the Emirate’s leading tourist attractions, the park will spread across an area of 3km2 between Jamal Abdul Nasser Street and the Khalid Lagoon Corniche.
Shurooq CEO Marwan Jassim Al Sarkal, told reporters at Reuters that the project is in line with directives of Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, the ruler of Sharjah, as well as Shurooq’s vision for Sharjah’s tourist and economic development.
"Shurooq was tasked with preparing studies for the development of several tourist attractions in Sharjah,” he said.
“A study on Al Majaz Park was one of those presented to Sheikh Sultan, who gave the signal to commence work on the project in co-ordination with the relevant bodies in the emirate in order to ensure that it is completed on time.
"The park will be closed for the duration of the project as it needs to be linked directly to Khalid Lagoon, which will become the waterfront of the park. The project will also involve the development of Corniche Street adjacent to the park.
“As such, new detours will be set up in coordination with the Department of Public Works in Sharjah."
Scheduled for completion in November, it will be constructed in two phases.
The construction of a musical fountain on the Khalid Lagoon, opposite the park's façade, as well as a number of new restaurants, cafés and recreational areas overlooking the lake, will come under phase one.
The second phase will involve the construction of six additional restaurants and cafés, a special play area for children, and a wide range of new landscapes.
According to officials, there will be continuous co-operation with the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority for the course of the project. >> Source (http://www.constructionweekonline.com/article-8822-subcontractors-appointed-for-al-majaz-park-project/)

The project, located on the Khalid Lagoon, is being considered as a catalyst to draw tourists and residents to the emirate. (SUPPLIED)
Sharjah is all set to unveil its new tourist attraction before year-end. The 220-metre wide musical fountain, part of the Dh100-million Al Majaz Waterfront Development, will be officially opened in November.
Even the landmark, Sharjah Fountain, closed a few years back for renovation, will come alive then, shooting water 100 metres high into the air.
In an interview with Emirates 24/7, Marwan Jassim Al Sarkal, Shurooq, Chief Executive Officer, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) said: “Al Majaz is one of the most important projects being developed by us. The musical fountain, which is 220 metres wide, is an important component of the project and will have 20 different musical and laser shows, with five video projections on water screens, every day.”
Dubai already has the Dubai Fountain in Burj Khalifa Lake, which is 275 metres long and shoots water 150 metres into the air, accompanied by a range of classical to contemporary Arabic and world music. But the Sharjah Fountain is not intended to rival that of Dubai. The project, located on the Khalid Lagoon, is being considered as a catalyst to draw tourists and residents to the emirate.
Asked for the reason for having a musical fountain, Al Sarkal said: “It came into consideration when we started discussing ideas of what we should develop in Al Majaz… what would be a major pull factor for the emirate? Then we came up with the idea of adding this fountain which will really uplift the tourism components of the emirate.”
He emphasized: “We want to make sure that when a family comes to Sharjah they have more than one area to visit.”
About 60 per cent of the project work is completed. A soft opening is being planned for October with the official opening taking place in November.
According to Al Sarkal, 4,700 square metres has been allocated for the construction of eight new restaurants and cafés which will face the musical fountain. “We are not looking at fine dining, but causual dining."
Al Majaz Waterfront will also be the first project in the UAE to have special joy rides for disabled people. “We have agreed with a French company to get rides for disabled people. We want to make sure that they are part of what we are developing here,” Al Sarkal said.
New identity for Heart of Sharjah
Shurooq will be launching a new identity for the Heart of Sharjah project and has even appointed a leasing consultant to undertake a study of the retail opportunities in and around the project.
“We will be launching year-end an identity for the Heart of Sharjah. We have appointed consultants to undertake leasing and traffic impact study so we can appropriately plan the project." Al Sarkal added that the 5-star hotel with 60 rooms will be the major component of the project and work is likely to start in the first quarter of 2012.
“We are finalizing an international operator to for management of the hotel. Although we expect construction to start by first quarter of 2012, it may take time since one portion of the hotel will be using the old houses and other portion will be new construction,” he added.

The $6.8m redevelopment of Rolla Square in Sharjah will be completed by the beginning of 2012, according to Sharjah Municipality director general Sultan Al Mualla.
“The project forms part of a larger redevelopment drive underway in the emirate,” said Al Mualla. Rolla Square is a historical site in Sharjah, named after the planting of the first banyan tree, known locally as a Rolla tree, in the 1800s.
“We have developed a unique architectural plan for the square that meets modern standards and preserves the emirate's heritage and Islamic architectural styles,” said Al Mualla.
Rolla Square covers 36,664m2. The municipality intends for 60% of the area to be landscaped, with the remaining 40% used for footpaths and fountains.

Face81 February 25th, 2012, 06:36 PM Spectacular shows begin at Dh120m Sharjah musical fountain
By Mariam M. Al Serkal, Staff Reporter
Published: 21:00 February 25, 2012
Sharjah: Residents and visitors to Sharjah can now enjoy watching eight daily spectacular shows by the giant musical fountain at Al Majaz Waterfront, the flagship and largest tourism project developed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq).
The first musical shows of the fountain kicked off last Friday in the presence of Shaikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Shurooq, and Marwan Jasem Al Sarkal, chief executive of Shurooq.
The shows received applause and admiration of the audience at Al Majaz Waterfront to enjoy the first shows of the Sharjah Musical Fountain.
The Sharjah musical fountain, the largest of its kind in the region, is 220 metres wide and will shoot water up to 100 metres into the air.
It has two giant water screens, and is equipped with the latest sound and light techniques. It will have different musical and laser shows, with laser arrangements and eight video projections on water screens, every day.
Huge attraction
"The musical fountain will become a landmark attraction in Sharjah, and it will have eight daily shows with various musical and laser arrangements and video projections on water screens," Al Sarkal added.
The Al Majaz Waterfront, which was opened to the public last year, is located between Jamal Abdul Nasser Street and Khalid Lagoon Corniche, a vital residential and commercial district with an estimated population of 100,000 people. It is expected to attract a large number of Sharjah's residents, visitors and tourists.
The project, which is valued at Dh120 million, spreads across an area of 231,000 square feet.
The Al Majaz Waterfront project includes musical fountains, ten restaurants and cafes, jogging areas, cycling routes, a distinguished mosque, art and sculpture park and a splash park.
There will also be 1,000 parking spaces, covered areas for entertainment and cultural activities, open and covered areas for children, a mini golf court, kiosks for snacks and soft drinks, walking areas and green spaces, amenities and public utilities.
The waterfront is equipped with a 4,700 square metre food court on the banks of the lagoon opposite the dancing fountain.
"The Splash park is the only recreational facility that will open by May because it is inconvenient to have children playing about with water in this cool weather. Once it gets hotter, children will benefit more from the water game," Al Sarkal noted.
The 800-square metre Splash park will be a fully automated, zero-depth aquatic play area suitable for the entire family, from toddlers through to adults, as well as for children with special needs. The state-of-the-art technology will optimise water consumption through sequenced activation and low-flow nozzle technology.
Show timings
The daily shows begin from 8.30pm and run until midnight, at an interval of 30 minutes. Each show lasts from five to 10 minutes.
