Two architect firms is involved in the project, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co. Ltd. The foundation stone was laid on August 27, 1997. In the late 1990s the Japanese Mori Building Corporation (the developer of SWFC) had a fund shortage caused by the Asian financial crisis, which halted the project after the foundations were completed. Construction finally resumed on February 13th, 2003.

The original plann was a 460m, 94 story tall building, and it was supose to be completed in 2001, and become the world tallest building two years before the completion of Taipei 101. But the design was changed in 2003 to a 491.9m and 101 stories tall building with a 50m wide and tall rectangular opening on the top of the building. Mori Building Corporation actually proposed to raise the building up to 510m so it could surpass Taipei 101's 508m as the world's No. 1 skyscraper, but this was declined by local authorities in Shanghai saying the city has a limit to building heights and an overall consideration of the skylines on both sides of the Huangpu River. The design of the opening near the top of the tower was changed in mid-October, 2005; from a circular to a rectangular opening. Architect and developer claim that it is cheaper and easier to implement the new design.

Soaring, tapering design. I think it would look even better with the circle at the top. But it is the most iconic Shanghai building now.

i dont like too much some of the angles of the tower, but that top is amazing! 9/10

I would like to calificate this with a 12 but since i can't of course it's an absolutely 10. This is at least in my opinion the World's Best Skyscraper (or it will be when finally completed).

well u have to consider the spire of Taipei 101, because it's officially Structural part of the building. and this tower is very unique but definitely not the new WTB

Spectacular tower. But I don't feel like giving 10 so only 9/10 for me.

this building is absolutely tall....wins two out of four categories on world tallest building ranking based on Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat..lost the most important criteria...height to the top of spire(architectural)..this one Taipei 101 and it is still the world tallest building..

Nvm..tiz building is tall enough to stand up among the others...the design is quite simple but being designed to be creative enough...with a hole on top of it...side view is not pretty nice...front view is better...

it stands on a strategic location..beside the Jin Mao Tower and in front of Oriental Pearl Tower

Shanghai WFC is one of them!
It's simply fantastic...

9.5 from me because nothing is perfect in my opinion, but this is a real contender. Aesthetically beautiful it's elegant, sits well with its neighbour Jin Mao beautifully and almost like a piece of art or sculpture. Like a trophy for an award. Definitely one of the best in Asia and among the greats around the world. My hat goes off to everyone involved with this building. :)

I went up yesterday-- the observation bridge on the 100th floor (not only being the highest in the world) is the best observation deck ever. You get a real sense of vertigo.

This is actually one of the most aesthetically advanced designs, simple clean lines that drive the eye high in the sky, its prismatic like shape is a clean statement of what a skyscraper must do : make sky and earth one!

I love this tower! I wasn't too crazy about the side view either, but when you see it in person it grows on you. The best place to view the tower is south of the bund on Zhongshan and Fuxing roads, at that angle you can see it tower over the apartment buildings around it. Absoultly stunning.

9.5/10 I love this building, the use of smaller windows gives the effect of climbing forever. I'm not crazy about the side view, but straight on this is a beast!

Could it be true? One of the world's most beautiful and pleasing skyscrapers is also one of its tallest? I still can't decide if I like the square hole better than the round one originally planned. 9.5

10/10 Its so tall. It looks like a glass trophy.

8/10 a very nice and beautiful building, but for me its not that very eye catchy.
