of course i'm going to give the sagrada familia (and everything else built by gaudi) a 10. i am constantly amazed at how gaudi could be so completely creative, cost-effective, structurally efficient, AND aesthetically pleasing. architects almost always have to sacrifice 1 or more of these ideals in their buildings. frank gehry and zaha hadid's guggenheim designs may be creative. but they're definitely not cost effective nor are they structurally efficient.

even today, when i look at gaudi's stuff, i sense that;

1. they look different from just about all the other buildings around.
2. the buildings don't look as if they were designed and built a century ago. they have a strange, timeless quality.

as examples, gaudi's use of parabolic arches was more efficient than the typical roman or gothic arches. the weird termite-mountain look of his sagrada familia was influenced by structural efficiency concerns. his spires didn't need thick walls nor flying buttresses. his seemingly weird shape was actually more practical. likewise, when it came to details, one is always impressed with the usage of cheap broken tiles as decorations. it was seemingly haphazard, but still beautiful.

of course, there are also some people who HATE his work. maybe it's just too weird for them. oh well, it's their loss.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you guys, based on what I learned in an architecture class about the building. Gaudi's part of the building is flawless, a perfect 10. And, its clearly distinguishable from the newer parts, which look a little mass produced, and certainly are less ornate and organic. For those who don't know, Gaudi did not leave plans for this building. Architects had to conjecture as to what it would look like, had he lived to complete it.

In my opinion, they guessed wrong. One significant thing they screwed up was the extremely un-Gaudi interior. The columns, with those strange egg shaped objects at their tops, look like nothing Gaudi ever did, nor would do. And, the interior is fundamentally repetitive, such as the columns and the ceiling. Gaudi was NEVER repetitive. See his Case Mila in Barcelona for an example of how Gaudi interiors actually looked. Gaudi is possibly my favorite architect, and I love everything he ever designed, but I have to admit that this building will not be faithful to his vision.

Still, it will be an impressive building when complete. Still an 8 or so, just not Gaudi-quality.

In summary, Gaudi's work on the church looks like something carved out of stone. The later work looks like something molded out of plaster.

You sure Gaudi didn't leave plans? I though he did leave plans, but they were destroyed in the Spanish civil war.... (I may be wrong, though).

Anyway, I agree that the Gaudi parts of the building are far far better than the "new" parts of the church.

I love this church. It was on the cover of my Spanish language textbook and every morning I thought to myself, I want to go there so bad. One day. Also, I didn't realize it was still under construction. I thought it was atleast a few hundred years old. Anyway, it is very beautiful. 10/10

Gaudi said once when asked that he hopes this would be not the last of the great cathedrals, but first of the completely new series. Today, almost 100 years later, his words seem more actual than ever. After Vatican Synod II in 1960's, when vast changes in liturgical service took place, no clear and unified style in architecture of churches could be observed. It was very visible during the contest for the Church of the Year 2000 in Rome, in which almost all of the world famous architechts took part. After having produced over 100 projects, all architects came to point that nothing new can be therefore defined. Maybe it's really time to produce good architecture after Gaudi, whose masterpiece can serve as a pattern for the completely new groupof churches. [11/10]

I like pontifex too. But finally, there has been some style that hasn't been used much. Like the visigothic style.

Since they haven't been used much, one could devellop them ;)

thats one of the ugliest things I have ever seen. I hated this church from the first day I laid my eyes over it.

It looks like it was built by insects... or aliens... or with wet sand on the beach... too much detail in a bad way... I HATE IT.

The only good features are its height... and hmmm... it is a difficult architecture to build. But just because its complex doesnt means its nice.

Btw, instead of looking like a temple to God, it seems like a temple to some evil thing... like something Sauron would build in Lord of the Rings.

The later work looks like something molded out of plaster.

so true... not a big fan of the newer parts

Still its Gaudi's masterpiece so ill give it a 10/10. The whole thing looks so surreal...

Barcelona is probably my number one must-see city in the world, and that's because of Gaudi.

Not true. Gaudi designed just about everything you see in the construction up through 2007. There are a few exceptions. Among them...

1) The Passion Rose Window. Designed by Mark Burry but based on Gaudi's principles. See the clerestory windows as an example of a latter Gaudi design.
2) The artwork on the Passion facade. Subirachs. To quote Hughes... "Has to be seen to be believed." (Not meant as a compliment)
3) The crossing. Gaudi described the crossing as a series of two rings of 12 hyperboloids surrounding a large one in the center. If you've seen recent pictures of the construction (i.e. on flickr), you'll see that they are on their way to creating his vision.
4) The details of the Glory facade interior. Looks a bit like a rush job to me.
5) The details of the apse interior (though closely following the principles laid out in the design of the nave).

A great book where you can read about the evolution of Gaudi's ideas into the parametric geometry we see being built today is the book entitled "El Ultim Gaudi (The Essential Gaudi)" by Jordi Bonet.

It is true that Gaudi's designs, up until these later ones, are not known for their repetetiveness. But it is also true that he was moving towards parametric designs. For example his use of ruled surfaces (hyperbolic paraboloids, hyperboloids, helixes, conoids) on the Crypta Guell, the SF Schoolhouse, and the pinnacles of the Nativity facade towers are evidence that help explain his almost total reliance on these shapes for the latter designs of the interior of the SF.

So the question is, why did he abandon the spontenaity of his earlier designs for repetetiveness? Because he knew that the SF would never be done in his lifetime and he wanted a method to convey a complex design to future generations. In a sense, the SF design is similar to the Guell Crypt design in that the columns bear "coaxial" loads (compression only, no sheering). However the Crypta Guell design was created using a funicular model that took 10 years to finalize. Gaudi could not use this method on such a massive and complex design as the SF. Thus he turned to an analytical approach that could be done in "2D" or almost 2D. Once a single bay of the nave was designed, then each bay (with exceptions at the "edges") would simply be a copy. Thus the repetition.

Still, there is great genius in the new designs. For example, according to "Gaudi al CAD" written by some of the SF architectural staff, one bay of the side nave vaults required only 14 numbers to reproduce it (positions of vaults, collar diameters, asymptote angles). That's mind boggling to me. Then there's the design of the "arboreal" columns. Each column's surface morphs from one shape seamlessly to another. For example, a square to an octogon, to a 16-sided form, to a 32-sided form and eventually to a circle.

Thus even though Gaudi went to a purely geometric approach in his latter years, he still exhibited a great genius as he obviously did on his spontaneous designs of his earlier years.

Most beautiful building in the world in my opinion (when it's finished) Honestly I can't think of a better one.

And for those who doubt: YES the newer parts are accurate with Gaudi's original plans and it is not invented or anything. In case anyone didnt know, the nativity facade (old part) is different and more organic than the rest, and everything was Gaudi's plan.
