The Vizag Seaport Private Limited (VSPL) is a hi-tech, upcoming and promising Bulk Cargo Handling Terminal, operating at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. VSPL operates two multi-purpose Berths: East Quay-8 and East Quay-9, in the inner Harbour of Visakhapatnam Port. VSPL is a joint venture company promoted by Gammon India Limited and Portia Management Services Limited.

Hailed as a landmark development in the maritime map of India, Ennore Port on the Coromandel Coast, 20 kilometers (km) north of Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu, is the first corporatized port in India. Envisaged as a satellite port to decongest and improve the environmental quality at the bustling Chennai Port, Ennore Port is evolving itself into a full-fledged port with the capacity to handle a wide range of products.

With the commissioning of Ennore Port in 2001, handling thermal coal destined for the thermal power stations owned by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) was shifted from Chennai Port. The port provides a cheaper option to transport coal from the Talcher coalfields in the state of Orissa for power generation in Tamil Nadu. Since Ennore Port became operational, TNEB has been saving Indian rupees (Rs)100 (about $2.50) for every ton of coal transported.

Ennore Port, designed as an energy port, has only 16 employees. Operating on a landlord port concept, it is outsourcing all services required for operation and maintenance, and new terminals are being developed with the participation of the private sector.

The Rs 3,500 crore Gangavaram Port, a totally mechanised private port, on Monday achieved a milestone of sorts by hosting a two lakh deep water tonnage (DWT) vessel besides completing construction works in just 18 months, also another record.

The works are slated to be completed by March-end and commercial operations will begin in April.

A merchant vessel Zhenhua with port equipment recently berthed at the iron ore dock successfully. The cargo (handling machinery and equipment) was delivered to Duro Felguera, the project equipment contractor for the Port.

Can someone confirm if the the chimneys and fume seen in the background of the picture of Gangaram Port (AP) above is that of Vishakapatnam Steel Plant?

My first job was at VSP and at that time Gangavaram had a pristine beach. I don't know of the current situation.

There is no longer any beach. It has been dredged away for the port. There were initial protests regarding this from the fishermen and environmentalists.

A view of the outer Visakhapatnam harbour and fishing harbour. Vizag Port, the largest Indian port, handled 63.9 million tons (just behind Kandla) of cargo during the year ended March 2009. The port's capacity is planned to be increased to 110 million tons by 2011-12 through an estimated Rs 30 bn expansion programme. Iron ore, coking coal and oil products are some of the bulk items handled by this natural harbour. The underutilised container terminal is operated by Visakha Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd. The terminal handles some 70,000 TEU's annually. The new multi-purpose deepwater port at Gangavaram began operating in 2008. (top left corner of image).

The privately built the Karaikal port will receive its first vessel on Wednesday when M.V.Beluga Fan Fare, a “project cargo specialist vessel,” docks at the newly built berth in the morning.

The deep sea, all-weather port is being built by Karaikal Port Private Limited (KPPL), at Vanjore near Karaikal, on a Build-Own-Transfer (BOT) basis.

Of the nine berths planned to be built on 600 acres leased from the Puducherry government, two were ready, company officials said.

Phase-I of the project was complete, they said, and the completed berths were being opened for commercial use, they said.

The first phase was completed in a record time of 18 months, a senior government official said. The first two berths, each 213-metre-long, were complete and dredging has been completed to a depth of 9 metre, he said.

M.V. Beluga Fan Fare, a 40-metre-long cargo vessel, would be the first commercial vessel docking at the port, and would carry two Liebherr Harbour mobile cranes of approximately 400 tonnes each as cargo.

Link Shipping South, the company representing Beluga Carriers, said the cranes had a lifting capacity of 104 tonnes.

The Karaikal port, with a total project cost of Rs. 1,400 crore, is intended to primarily handle cement and coal to serve the hinterland in Ariyalur, Perambalur and Tiruchi. The port is also expected to provide an alternative to the Chennai and Tuticorin ports, which are the major ports in the coastline but are separated by long distance.

While the port has been opened for commercial exploitation, the railway line work to connect Nagore to Karaikal was progressing and the port could receive rail connectivity by July, the government official said.

Many thanks for the Clarification.

I was aware that the Adanis had a "tussle" with DPW when the Second Terminal was about to be commissioned and was not sure if DPW amnaged to get their hands on the Second Terminal or that the Adanis had managed to "keep DPW away".

Now I know.

My main interest has been in Three Ports - Chahbahar, Gwadar and Mundra.

It is good to know that Mundra is making such progress and I am sure will eventually be the Largest Port in terms of Volume among the three.

Of course Ambani and ESSAR will be jointly handling over 125 Million Tons in Jamnagar - but it is only Oil.

The Port has till date handled around 100 Vessels including 3 Capesize coal vessels and 41 gearless Panamax vessels.

There is no record of “Press Releases” for over an year.

However with a Final Development Depth of 21 Metres the Port is aiming to handle ships of up to 300,000 DWT

Larsen and Toubro, Tamil Nadu Investment Development Corporation Ltd (TIDCO) and Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd (TNPL) have built the shipyard and the minor port.

A statement issued here by the state government said Jayalalithaa inaugurated the shipyard and the cement plant through video conferencing.

Spread over 810 acres, the shipyard is the largest in the country, the statement added. :cheers::cheers:

Paper-maker TNPL has set up the 600 tonne cement plant near its paper mill in order to use its waste lime and the fly ash generated at its power plant. The company is the first paper manufacturer to set up a cement plant.

The cement plant will provide employment to around 300 people.

Jayalalithaa also handed over the appointment order to consultancy company Development Consultants Private Ltd to act as consultants for Tamilnadu Cements Corporation Ltd's expansion plans.

The company plans to increase its annual capacity from 500,000 to 1.5 million tonnes.
