View Full Version : #137 l MetLife Building l NEW YORK l 246m l 60fl
RafflesCity October 16th, 2002, 06:50 PM MetLife Building
New York, USA
HEIGHT: 246m/808 feet
FLOORS: 60 floors
COMPLETION: 1963
ARCHITECT: Emery Roth and Sons
was begun in 1958 as the Grand Central City development to bring revenue for the railway companies that owned the plot.
Replacing the Grand Central Terminal Office Building between Grand Central Terminal and the New York Central Building (now Helmsley Building), the plot was to house a skyscraper to utilize the "underdeveloped" site.
A preliminary design by the Roths, a 50-storey north-south-aligned tower slab of aluminium and glass facades, was discarded as "too modest" and Walter Gropius and Pietro Belluschi were brought in to join them as design consults.
In February 1959 the new design was presented: Gropius came up with a 59-storey east-west-aligned tower with an oblong octagonal plan. He wanted to reduce the bulk of Roth's slablike structure by cutting the four corners to give the building a sense of continuity. The shape, formed from precast concrete elements, also resembled an aeroplane wing, which suited well the original owner and main tenant, the Pan American Airways.
Demolition work on the site began in August 1960 and the building was completed by March 1963 for the cost of $100 million, the first tenants arriving a month later.
The 246.5 m tall building incorporated 223,000 mē of office space (of which Pan Am occupied one-fourth), more than any other commercial office building at the time. The building's large floors, as well as its favourable location and connections have been most lucrative for tenants. There is also the private Sky Club on the 58th floor.
The tower is erected on an eight-storey, granite-clad base which occupies the site between 45th Street and Grand Central Terminal, with the Park Avenue roadways passing on both sides.
The concrete walls of the tower are interrupted by two colonnaded openings on the facade, at 21st and 46th floors, behind which the technical equipment is located.
In 1961 a heliport was opened on the roof, adding another role for the building, as an in-city terminal for NYC airport connections (a realization of a kind of the Empire State Building's "direct arrival" idea). The heliport was finally closed in 1977, after a helicopter accident that took the life of five people and caused crash debris to fall down to the street.
In the large concourse, connected to Grand Central Terminal (the large volume of pedestrian traffic through the Terminal to and from the high-rise has caused criticism), Gropius used escalators and stairs to accelerate pedestrian movement through the building. The ground floor houses the main concourses, with the 66 elevators of the office tower located in the mezzanine-like second floor lobby, reached by, in all, 14 escalators.
Gropius persuaded the developers to allow bringing in artists to work on the building; the lobbies and concourses contain works by Josef Albers (mural)(removed in 2001), Georgy Kepes (decor) and Richard Lippold (wire construction Flight). In 1987 the lobby system underwent a redecoration by Warren Platner.
Since its completion in 1963, the building has been criticized for its mass blocking the view through Park Avenue and generally dominating the space above Grand Central Terminal and the Helmsley Building, the latter of which Gropius would have rather torn down to make space for a landscaped plaza at the foot of the building.
Pan Am sold the building to the insurance company Metlife in 1981 for $400 million and the Pan Am logo was replaced with Met Life's in 1992.

Jasonhouse October 16th, 2002, 07:21 PM A decent building in a TERRIBLE location... The great Walter Gropius assisted with its design, which makes its intrusive sighting even more of a shock. one of my most despised highrises in the World, because of what it did to Park Row.
3.0/10
Polskafreak October 16th, 2002, 08:39 PM 3/10 Its a very boring building.
NickT October 16th, 2002, 09:29 PM 7.5/10 Nice Design, Kind of Boring, Could be improved, but nice
SteelCity32 October 17th, 2002, 12:42 AM nothing exciting. 3/10
Jeff from Winnipeg October 17th, 2002, 04:17 AM Meh... 4/10
AG October 17th, 2002, 10:37 AM This building is somewhat wide for it's height for my liking. It could use some improment, though I think it's location at end on of the street is good.
7/10
SUNNI October 17th, 2002, 01:32 PM looks short and stubby
Patrick October 17th, 2002, 02:22 PM i don't know why I like it so much

RafflesCity October 17th, 2002, 06:43 PM 6.5/10
Close up it looks dirty and ugly..but I am impressed by its distorted octagonal shape and its powerful looking mass. I dont understand why the media hates it. Its very symbolic of NY IMO.
DamienK October 18th, 2002, 06:15 PM I don't think it's that bad actually, I like the octagonal shape and the crisp sharp way the roof terminates. I take off points mainly for the dirty facade (which is in the process of being cleaned): 6/10
Phil October 18th, 2002, 06:26 PM 5/10 , too massive, and too brown.

It's the location. It absolutely destroyed the vistas of Park Row, Grand Central Terminal and the Helmsley Building, all in one fell swoop. At the time, this area was one of the most cherished in NYC, because of the many beautiful and historic buildings around there. And then they just came along and plopped this massively scaled Brutalist building right smack dab in the middle of it all. It didn't help that the building was built on the cheap, with cost effectiveness ruling almost the entire design process.
It would be like taking the Raffles district and Raffles Place in Singapore, smashing down part of it in the middle, and then building an oppressively massive highrise that almost everyone universally hates.
RafflesCity October 18th, 2002, 06:53 PM Jason..I can see where u are coming from..I would abhor such a project in Singapore too..only thing is..the government would probably not allow it in the first place.
Why didnt the authorities of NY prevent this from happening?
Jasonhouse October 18th, 2002, 07:04 PM Property rights of owners are very strong, especially when they pay off the govt. ;)
Sunflower October 18th, 2002, 11:35 PM Dull, fairly ugly and ruins a great view.
3.5/10
ryanr October 20th, 2002, 11:09 AM It's ok, but it ruins a really great veiw...Very bad location.
6/10 for the building
0.5/10 for the location.
enzo October 20th, 2002, 11:29 AM Bias comes into play here for me. I see this building daily looming over Grand Central on my way home. They are in the process of cleaning it and suprise, suprise, the damn thing gleams! (We never knew it was supposed to be shiny!)
Overall it's not great, but the base and the way the tower cantilevers over the street and Grand Central is quite "ginormous". I despise the signage but I like what it does to "canyonize" Park Ave. I actually think it enhances the Helmsley Bldg. I'll give her an optomistic 7.5/10
I'll post some photos of her cleaned when it's done.

BTW Jason, Park Row is DT by City Hall, this is Park Ave.:)
250gto October 20th, 2002, 12:34 PM Yeah, I kinda like the "canyon" effect it makes, too. Similar to the CBOT in Chicago. But at the same time, if you're gonna block the views, it should be more original. But I can't say I abhor it or anything.
6.5
CTroyMathis October 21st, 2002, 03:23 AM It's all about it's location. Lot of love or a lot of hate, eh?
I like the fact it's getting seriously power-cleaned!
Liz L October 26th, 2002, 09:18 AM 4/10 - It's just a huge ol' slab that's about as graceful as Godzilla, unless maybe you see it from the side. It might be better if it weren't so broad, but as it is, it looks too intrusive and out of scale with the buildings around it, even in pictures.
Besides, concrete facades belong on parking garages and factories. It doesn't age well, and doesn't look like much even if it's new.
AndrewC October 26th, 2002, 04:30 PM I like this building and its location!
I don't think Park Avenue would be as good without this building there, personnally. I think its one of the most famous vistas in the world.
And the design isn't that boring.
7/10
Drazon October 28th, 2002, 07:24 AM I probably shouldn't say this, but I think the terrorists should have flown a plane into this building instead. Maybe not because Grand Central is right next to it, but it should be demolished and no tall building should ever replace it. Build an opera house or something close to Grand Central's height.
It's a similar argument to the one they made for World Trade #7 when they went to redesign it.
You want to know what irony is. When I drove into New York through the Lincoln tunnel I ended up parking my car on a little street right next to this building (the intersection a block up from this little street's dead end at the MetLife tower was Madison Ave.) There was no parking meter, but it was a legal place to park and there was a parking garage right next to it. It is the only curbside parking I ever found in Manhattan that was free to park at, so now you know where it is.

Steven November 10th, 2002, 12:12 AM I voted 7/10 because it looks ok.
Insomniac November 10th, 2002, 12:36 AM I give this building a 5.5/10. It seems OK, though not great. The shape reminds me of the La Tour Montparssane, I believe it's called, in Paris. Awesome photos of New York and Park Avenue, BTW, RafflesCity and enzo.

I hope that's true! That could be very useful information! I never thought that if Manhattan had any free parking spaces, that's where it would be, smack dab in the middle of Midtown.
Now if you could find some places like that in Washington, D.C. that would be awesome little thing to know for my next visit.
Drazon November 10th, 2002, 05:14 AM I really lucked out with that parking space. I think there's only two right there. The rest had meters.
TYW November 16th, 2002, 09:37 AM 6/10
nice but it looks old. needs some clean up
Bobdreamz November 20th, 2002, 05:01 AM I am rating the building & not what it's done to Park Avenue!..lol..
I'm very fond of this building...the Brutalist style is one of my favorites and this building accomplishes that in a skyscraper like no other...the shape & it's massing are very dominating on Park Avenue but I think it kind of frames the Helmsley building quite nicely...i'd give it an 8.5/10!
Eddy November 23rd, 2002, 02:04 PM i just hate it! the design is terrible!! 3/10
CG5 November 23rd, 2002, 05:52 PM Ah, yes...the ugliest building to ever rape Grand Central Station.
Nothing could be built on this site if they tore it down...they'd have to restore GCS's former northern facade, which was destroyed for this...thing.
I have no respect for any building that's a product of such horrendous planning, much less such banal design.
0/10 - Tear this muthufucka down.
Jasonhouse November 23rd, 2002, 06:06 PM And to think that the great, socially conscious Gropuis had much sway in the design of this Brutalist nightmare.
It's not that bad of a building, but the location is just a crime. That building DOES NOT compliment the Helmsley building, and yes, it DESTROYED the grace and harmony of the Park Ave vista.
CG5 November 24th, 2002, 06:50 AM Here's something to boost your opinion of Gropius a bit more...
Walter Gropius wanted to raze the Helmsley (then New York Central) Building for a modernist park. How much would that have sucked?
enzo November 24th, 2002, 09:28 AM How much would that have sucked?
A shitload! ;)
Point well taken!
Pablo November 30th, 2002, 03:37 PM 3/10.too massive;)
mookiecece December 23rd, 2002, 05:19 PM I think it's a cool building but it blocks everything... how long is it going to be till they finally demolish it? 5.5/10
giallo December 23rd, 2002, 05:29 PM Even the greatest city in the world, with the greatest architecture in the world has some skeletons in the closet. 3.0
Venusfan December 25th, 2002, 03:26 AM 7.5/10
Its boldness and power spell the characteristic of NY.

The Messiah February 26th, 2003, 03:42 PM In a way i like it:)It's not a beautiful skyscraper but it aint't that bad neither. It just kinda look cool
7.0/10
Evergrey April 11th, 2003, 02:11 AM 0/10 Quite simply, one of the disasters of modern skyscraper
airsickpenthousedweller April 17th, 2003, 11:29 PM Good and interesting proportions.
Sky April 17th, 2003, 11:33 PM 3.5/10
Very ugly :ohno:
Downtown April 25th, 2003, 12:16 AM Denver's parking meters are more expensive than New York's.
Anyways, I give it a 5 because it looks better in person than pictures, or actually that's how everything is. I mean, a 5 because it's not a box and for its height. There is really nothing else special about the building, other than the location.
tmac9wr May 1st, 2003, 04:37 AM I think that this building is nice, but nothing special, however the view when looking at it from street level with the old Pan Am building in front of it is great. I love the view of the classic old buildings with the newer tall towers rising behind them.
TropicalSQ744 May 3rd, 2003, 04:14 PM It's sheer mass is amazing.. Very attention seeking also! :) But the shape and facade is not eye pleasing at all...
5/10
rj2uman May 26th, 2003, 06:02 PM I will always think of this one as the Pan Am bldg. 7/10 because of the Love it or Hate it view people have. I am ambivalent.
Imperfect Ending May 29th, 2003, 09:54 AM 5.5
atleast its better than the neighboring building..
New Jack City July 12th, 2003, 06:53 AM 6/10...I'm on the hater side regarding the Metlife Building. It's downright ugly, and rips Park Row apart but not only that, destroys some great views! Though I do appreciate the height and it's impact in the skyline, whether I like it or not.
Hacksaw July 12th, 2003, 08:00 AM Broad range of results so far...
Personally I think it's not too bad, but improvements can always be made.
6.5/10.0
Labrador July 27th, 2003, 01:45 PM 5.5
I think it's quite ugly. Not as bad as some though. :)
phxmania2001 July 28th, 2003, 08:21 PM I find it appealing beacuse of that certain badassness that being the Brutalist posterchild gives it.
If I ever was to have an evil headquarters, this would certainly be it. :D
james2390 August 7th, 2003, 06:33 PM interesting, 8
7 World Trade August 22nd, 2003, 05:46 AM MetLife- an okay building in the wrong place in the wrong time. i bet of the developers build it anywhere else in midtown, ppl would of loved it.
8
Cliff August 22nd, 2003, 09:45 AM Met Life is nice, it's position also makes NY's skyline 'grander'.
The building itself is bold and powerful, and slender at the same time(from the side)
8/10
Dennis August 22nd, 2003, 11:46 AM Metlife rulez!
10/10! :guns1:
AtlanticaC5 August 26th, 2003, 08:40 PM I like this one, it's not beautiful, but sooo massive and impressive!! 7/10
renell August 28th, 2003, 11:03 PM 5/10 umm.. what can i say? it's ugly
If I ever was to have an evil headquarters, this would certainly be it.
even Dr. Evil would be smart enough to realize this one is an ugly:D

Primo October 16th, 2003, 01:44 AM It looks so impressive from Park Avenue, but I think is way too massive, I give it a 7/10

chenlu May 8th, 2004, 04:24 AM Other than the age, this building is, in my opinion, flawless. 10
Desven May 20th, 2004, 08:51 PM well...,its quite ugly!
SunKing May 26th, 2004, 11:31 AM It's a love it/hate it building, I love it though, it's a part of modern skyscraper history.
7 World Trade May 27th, 2004, 03:57 AM i agree that metlife is such an eyesore on park avenue, but i don't think tearing it down will do nyc any better. personally, while helmsley's a lot more architectually graceful, it's too puny to serve well as the 'terminus' for park avenue, and metlife actually helps to make helmsley stand out more.
chrysler and metlife should switch places though.
even though metlife is such a huge slab, i think it's the best nyc international style skyscraper to be built in that location. imagine if one of the xyz buildings were built there. the view would be ten times worse. the black boxes of park avenue and western downtown would just make the street look gloomy.
i don't think metlife would ever be demolished. that building represents the development of international style skyscrapers on park avenue, and it will always be a reminder of how things can get so wrong if development is put ahead of preservation.
who knows, maybe in the future people will start to like this building more. they just have to get used to it, like in the case of the world trade center.
ron_guevara May 28th, 2004, 11:23 AM Eeek! Big... and massive...ly boring... 4/10

For me, this is New York's equivalent of Guy's Hospital (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=110598). Impressive size - but rather ugly and overbearing.

It's an ok building and a bad, but not horrible, placement and location. I like the shape, find the fadae unflattering.

Dubai-Lover August 27th, 2004, 08:24 PM very old, but like this one with the smaller tower in front! 7
GuilhermeC October 16th, 2004, 01:43 AM Just needs a revamp. If it was smaller, I'd give it a higher rate.

RafflesCity December 23rd, 2004, 03:14 PM you know you love it really.
it wouldnt be new york without it!
so true...despite all the harsh words for it, I regard it as a New York landmark. Its frequently seen on TV :)
Vlad the Great December 25th, 2004, 10:56 PM Arguably the best location for a skyscraper in a skyline- right smack in the middle of Park Avenue.
But that's not going to save this 60's box from getting a 6 in my book.
NYC's skyline would look "empty" without it..
SkyHawk January 20th, 2005, 04:03 PM 7.5/10
MattSal March 18th, 2005, 04:17 AM Very elegant, but very ugly. Nothing for New York City to brag about here. I give it a 4.5/10. :(
TowersNYC April 3rd, 2005, 08:09 PM i give it 9
The floor plates on this tower are HUGE!!!!
lobby is elegant and spacious..great location next to Grnad Central, it ruined Park Avenue,
it also had a working heliport on its roof...but closed in 1979 when a hellicopter crashed on the roof and sent one of the blades down into the street and decapitated a pedestrian!!
it also represented how powerful Pan American Airways was back then!!! :)
PornStar April 7th, 2005, 08:50 PM fits well where it is
8/10
Medo April 8th, 2005, 07:42 AM Not too good. 5
superskyline April 9th, 2005, 03:29 AM I have always disliked this building, the design of it is awful and so isnt the color and facade....
But it also ruined one of the best views in New York, Park Street had a beautiful view. Looking up or down you would see the Grand Central tower at the end which gave the street a stately look. As Micheal George said, "The New York Central Building had dominated Park Avenue and brought it to its conclusion in the same way the Arc de Triomphe end the Champs - Elysees in Paris"
http://www.photodump.com/direct/swtrackie/111565.jpg
There are some wonderful old phots in a book I have but this is the only one I could find^^
Today when you look down Park Avenue all you see behind it is the MetLife Building and going up Park Avenuse the whole feeling is ruined....
http://www.photodump.com/direct/swtrackie/1111222.jpg
http://www.photodump.com/direct/swtrackie/111222.jpg
So with all this I give it a 1/10
sfenn1117 April 9th, 2005, 07:01 AM I gave it an 8. Like it or not, it's a NY icon due to its shear size. I love the way it towers over Park Ave and it looks much better after its cleaning. I wouldnt mind having a condo in there!
And I'm glad the MetLife logo is staying. I'm too young to remember the "Pan Am" logo and I'm just accustomed to seeing this one.
get13 April 10th, 2005, 01:36 AM Too huge, Too grey and Too dirty 4/10
Pengui April 18th, 2005, 06:32 AM Ouch :-(

One of the world's worst IMO, if not the worst.

Oriolus August 12th, 2005, 03:09 AM Me neither - the facade could maybe do with a redevelopment but it has such a powerful presence both from the air & the way it looms striaght ahead from the street.

Art Deco December 4th, 2005, 05:41 PM Yeah, I kinda like the "canyon" effect it makes, too.
I think that's what does it for me with this one. A very boring design and pretty stubby, but its still a respectable 800+ footer and is pretty well known by now.
7/10
Spearman December 4th, 2005, 06:02 PM On it's own it's not bad I guess; but I find myself looking at all the other buildings in the picture. Besides, because it's so wide, it looks shorter than it really is. So that's a 5/10. But than again, it IS a 250m tall and very large skyscraper... 6/10.
FROM LOS ANGELES December 6th, 2005, 02:53 AM For some reason I like it. 9.5/10
warnings January 9th, 2006, 02:28 PM 3/10
Scruffy88 January 9th, 2006, 06:48 PM Maybe its just me but I love this building. I grew up loving this building and loving how absolutley massive it was. I LOVE the view south from say 59th street and Park Ave where you see the Helmsley Building silhouetted by the giant Met Life or the view North where it towers and looks over the beautiful Grand Central Station. I love those shots. Same reason I love the Plaza hotel hotel being silhouetted by the Solow seen from central park. These wide buildings make good backdrops. These are quintessential views of nyc. no where else. Here in NYC not as many people hate this building as everyone thinks. At first, yes. but its grown on everyone. the majority of the haters are outsiders, which is fine. just keep in mind, us natives like it and some, like me, love it. its impressive, its a spectacle, it screams: "respect me cause i'm a man made mountain!"
9.5/10
Cabman January 10th, 2006, 01:55 AM Location, location I doubt if this would get built today. For all it's faults I kinda like it 7/10
JV_325i January 10th, 2006, 04:19 AM Not a fan of this one, location aside. The octagonal shape comes off visually as a ridiculous stunt to add some interest to the staid design; looks somewhat contrived as a result. In my mind, this building would look better with a rectangular shape. The way that the octagonal element was implemented into the overall design looks awkward; the relationship of the angles of the sides does not instill a sense of purpose in the shape, rather a feeling that the octagonal shape was not the initial idea but rather applied later to inject some much needed excitement into a very sober design.
Additionally this building gets points off for its industrious look and cheap looking materials.
This gets a less than 3 from me.

I used to love it.
JV_325i March 24th, 2006, 08:06 PM Wow. I can't believe people actually voted a 10 for this piece of shit. "Well, it is a really ugly box that ruined the architectural harmony within the entire vicinity of itself, but it has a lovely concrete facade and stands as an icon of the power of giant corporations to completely absolve modern architecture of any sort of artfullness or intellignet design. PLUS that octagonal shape is genius! 10/10!"
USS Yankee March 27th, 2006, 02:39 AM A nondescript building that garners some points for its mass. However, possibly no other building in the world enjoys such an incomprable setting and presence, right in the middle of a busy street of all places!

EtherealMist May 17th, 2006, 12:12 AM This big beast of building... I heard that it cotains the most amount office space for a single building? I dont know if this is still true.
Anyway Ive always had good memories with this building. I remember driving down park ave when with my parents when I was a kid and I was wondering how the hell we were going to get through it? or does the road just end? :D
It may not be the most elegant building but I like the massiveness of it and the impact it has on the skyline... 8/10

lbjeffries August 19th, 2006, 08:38 PM I'm giving this one a 10/10. This is a beautiful building that works in spite of the fact that several awful boxes (that means you 277 Park and JP Morgan) don't give it the breathing room it deserves. It provides a perfect canvas to both Helmsley and Grand Central Terminal and works well in the skyline next to Chrysler. With each passing generation more people begin to appreciate and love this building, and I'm confident all the booing and hissing will eventually become a distant memory.

I know many Yorks don't like this thang, but I thing it would come out well after they reclad it, it'd kinda nice shiny facade then; also the height is perfect and I do like its shape... It really don't deserves to be that much hatred, especially not for the time it was build, I think. Accept this, NY! ;)

It is quite ok. Itīs massive, rather dark, boxy and therefore fits perfectly into its time. But itīs far from being a beauty.
For being one of the numerous signatures of midtown I gave it a 7.5 though.
