As a Palmeiras supporter, I'm really glad to see that the arena is - indeed - being built after all. This will be a complete turnaround for the club, I reckon.

I guess so. And I guess it couldn't be helped about the curved bleachers, since the reform licence does not allow it to be demolished (even if it did, Palmeiras/WTorre would still want to use that space for events, anyway :nuts:).

Most of the fans wanted something between 50,000 and 55,000. WTorre always stated that 45,000 is the perfect capacity to make the arena the most profitable as possible, but removable seats are in plans after some fans presented this project (www.megaupload.com/?d=TBNBQ0F3) to WTorre directors.

Yesterday, Sao Paulo's mayor, Gilberto Kassab, visited the works. Palmeiras and WTorre want the construction licence to be revised (preferably, until february), so the garage building could hold 3,000 vehicles and the oval stand would be allowed to be demolished, thus saving about 4 months and, obviously, money. Kassab said it is his duty to help this happen and he will figure out a way to do it.


Well, let´s wait and see.

Yesterday Marcos made his debut as promoter of the New Arena, doing a tour of the construction site together with legend Ademir da Guia and a group of 40 visitors. When Marcos returns from his holidays WTorre intends to sign him up as the “ambassador” of the stadium. Marco’s future attributions are not clear, but WTorre has made it clear that it involves much more than just the use of Marcos’ name and image.

WTorre is also negotiating the naming rights of the New Arena. Ajax’s main sponsor, insurance company Aegon, has made an offer of US$210 million for 20 years. WTorre has signalled interest, but believes the same amount could be had for a 15-years contract. WTorre is in no hurry to close the deal; in the words of director Rogério Dezembro the more one can show of the actual Arena, the easier it gets to negotiate the naming rights. WTorre is talking to several others and a deal could be closed in 30 or in 180 days, he says.

Alguém tem ideia de quando de fato começarão a mexer na estrutura do estádio? Os prédios em volta tem um ritmo de construção bem forte mas a arena... Essa meia-duzia de colunas foram colocadas há meses e até agora pouquíssima diferença é notada.

They received an authorization in the 90's to reform the stadium. Since them, Palmeiras do small renovations every year to keep it from expire. Than, it came the opportunity to build a brand new stadium due the World Cup law that makes things easier for this kind of project. However, asking for a new permission would make it almost impossible to do the construction. Hence, they are using the old one for restauration.

That means they cannot destroy completely the old stadium. The way found is to hide it.
