Looks like Virgin-Nigeria has changed its livery slightly. The red and green don't go well together. Perhaps they should make the tail green as well.

That is a good observation. Retaining the traditional vrigin red on the tail is to impress the Nigerian people of the quality service the Virgin antlantic is known for and it is surprising it hasn`t meet the expectation at all.

Why is the paintings of the Nigerian airlines alike? You can easily compare Virgin Nigeria and Bellview paintings - the tails and the propellers of the two airlines are painted in thesame way.

VIRGIN NIGERIA, DESPERATE NEED FOR QUALITY CUSTOMER CARE(II)
07 July, 2008 02:00:00 Kester Osahenye

The Virgin model of balanced scorecard is to listen to any and all ideas and to offer feedbacks. For the companies in which he serves as both chief executive and chairman, Branson writes his staff letters to tell them everything that is going on and to encourage them to write him with any ideas or suggestions. He gives them his home address and phone number. He responds with a letter personally. Sir Richard Branson should deploy such strategy to turn around Virgin Nigeria.
I was privileged to have used several airlines in recent times: on numerous routes to European cities from - London. The check in were fast and efficient. No sickening cancellations of flights, No thunderous landing of airplanes, no bumpy run-ways, no long waiting in any of the places, those experiences exemplified the advantage of the very best practices in the aviation sector. All the flights were leaving on time and handled in a professional and friendly manner. Even SAAB 2000 was fast, quiet and comfortable turboprop that competes with many regional jets. They offer the best of on-board services, including a variety of drinks, several sandwiches, cakes and sweets served by cabin crew members who love their jobs. Planning long haul trips from UK to anywhere in Europe are always pleasurable but it always reminds me of the bad state of our aviation industry that trudges on without much improvement and the absence of a national carrier, because Virgin Nigeria is a caricature of such coinage.

Several Nigerians have written about the opulence and splendour that epitomize flying Qatar Airways without taking a cursory look into this history of the successful emirate of Qatar national carrier. Qatar Airways was founded on November 22, 1993, when the reigning family wanted an own national airline for the emirate of Qatar. The first flight was inaugurated on January 20, 1994. The new management benchmarked the successful example of the UAE's National Airline Emirates, these resilient and dogged professionals took Qatar Airways from bankruptcy to financial liquidity and to its celebrated status of five-star airline.

Today Qatar Airways is one of the elite carriers with a five-star ranking for service and excellence awarded by Skytrax, the independent aviation industry research company.

Skytrax also named Qatar Airways' cabin crew as best in the Middle East for the fifth year running in 2007, following a survey of more than 12 million passengers.

The Nigerian Airways and Virgin Nigeria disappointments re-enact the stories of the lop-sided deregulation of our telecoms sector and other utilities, the ongoing war of attrition between Transcorp owners and the Federal government is a case in point.

The failure of our national institutions calls for a re-think by our burgeoning crowd of nouveau riche, who should use their new found wealth to change the fortunes of our ailing economy, we don't need a Richard Branson to change the fortunes of our aviation industry, when Nigeria now boasts of citizens that are listed amongst the richest people on earth. Nigerians are tired of granular profit-after-tax figures from our banks; they don't need the figures from our budgets that hardly translate to practical solutions to the country's woes.

The latest airline to join the Nigerian busy skies is DANA AIR, which is starting with three MD-83s aircraft deployed on the Lagos-Abuja-Port Harcourt axes.
The carrier´s interesting motto is ¨The Smartest Way to Fly¨, it´s about time billboard titles are used on Nigerian aircraft which were once dull and boring...

More info on Dana Air here: www.flydanaair.com but don´t hold your breath because they will release all the info tomorrow (080808).

TRACON Project Back On Track

The multi-million naira Total Radar Coverage for Nigeria [TRACON],abandoned fifteen months ago, is now back on track following directive by the Minister of State for Air Transportation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode to the foreign contractors to restore the Primary Radar earlier dropped from the project.

Initially, the project which included the installation of Primary Radar at four Airports was to cost 66,500,870 million Euros, but when the facility[primary radar] was excluded in the course of implementation, the contract price then dropped to 57,379,580m Euros since the cost of Primary Radar for four Airports was 9,121,290m Euros.

ICAO Consultant on the project, Trevor Paine, the man that changed the face of the Canadian Aviation Industry to rank among the best in the world, is back in the country as a result of this positive development.

Paine, who left the country in December, 2005 described the resuscitation of the project as commendable effort that would bring the country’s aviation sector back on course, saying that Nigeria is influential in the global industry.
.
The managing director of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency[NAMA],Captain Ado Sanusi disclosed in Lagos on Sunday that the remaining phase of the project had been divided into two with the first phase focusing on completion of all installation for Abuja and Kano Airports as specified in the initial scope of supply in addition to the provision of Primary Radar to the Lagos segment.

Setting a target of 15 months for the completion of this phase, Capt. Sansui hinted that the sum of N1.6 billion and N2.5 billion appropriated in 2006 and 2007 budgets respectively shall form the basis of funding the projects.

Under the renewed drive to sustain the project, new buildings are to be provided for Abuja and Kano instead of refurbishment while all on-shore payments are to be invoiced in Naira.

“With the signing of Amendment No3,there is no doubt that the agency is now poised to fast track this project once more with all the seriousness it deserves to ensure that the implementation of this phase of the project is achieved in target time”, the managing director, said.

Captain Sanusi, explained that the operation of TRACON would enhance safety as all aircraft would be under surveillance with incidence of mid-air collision narrowed to almost zero.

He added that the new radar system would allow for effective billing of airline aeronautical charges as no aircraft would again sneak into the country’s airspace without being detected for permission or otherwise.

The project aimed at modernizing Nigerian Air Traffic Management System, comprises state of the art surveillance system ,including, Secondary Surveillance Radar, integrated Flight and Radar Processing System and other associated facilities for airports in Lagos,Abuja,Kano and Port Harcourt ,with other locations in Talata-Mafara,Maiduguri,Numan,Obubra and Ilorin.

The implementation of the first phase of the Radar project in Lagos was stalled by negotiation with the French Company, Thales ATM for leasing and the introduction of multilateration system by the previous management of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency [NAMA].

Twelve Engineers had already been trained on the maintenance of the system while 32 Area Radar Controllers have been penciled for training in the United States [US] for effective manning of the facilities.

Virgin in talks to sell out of Nigeria
By Matthew Green in Lagos

Published: August 19 2008 19:00 | Last updated: August 19 2008 20:00

Virgin Atlantic is in talks to sell its 49 per cent stake in Virgin Nigeria, which it set up in 2005, following an increasingly acrimonious dispute with the Nigerian government over the location of the loss-making west African carrier’s domestic operations.

Sir Richard Branson, president of the UK longhaul carrier, on Tuesday accused the authorities of using “Mafioso-style” tactics to force Virgin Nigeria to move services from the international terminal in Lagos, the commercial capital.

EDITOR’S CHOICE
BA and Virgin face flood of price-fix claims - Feb-23BA and Virgin pay $204m over surcharges - Feb-15Virgin Atlantic cabin crew end strike threat - Jan-07“It is regrettable that events have caused us to review our shareholding and whether it is appropriate that the Virgin brand should remain linked to Virgin Nigeria,” Sir Richard said.

Virgin Nigeria was hailed as a symbol of investor confidence in Nigeria when it was set up by Virgin Atlantic and Nigerian institutional investors, in part to meet demand for a reliable carrier given the country’s poor record for air safety.

Virgin Atlantic claims that the government reneged on a deal signed under Olusegun Obasanjo, the previous president, that let it use the international terminal for all services.

The administration of Umaru Yar’Adua, who took power in May last year, says Virgin Nigeria’s claim is not legally valid.

Virgin Atlantic’s criticism echoes accusations by companies including Royal Dutch Shell and Mittal Group, which accuse the government of tearing up contracts signed under its predecessor.

Mr Yar’Adua’s officials say his administration is only reversing deals in which foreign companies tried to exploit the country and is committed to promoting investment.

Sir Richard claimed thugs were sent to smash up Virgin Nigeria’s domestic lounge this year. “The behaviour of the authorities was similar to the way the Mafioso behaved in the US in the 1930s and not what I would have expected from the authorities in Nigeria,” he said.

“If Virgin Nigeria can be treated in this way, can any company in the world seriously consider investing in Nigeria in the future?”

Aviation authorities forced Virgin Nigeria to relocated domestic flights from the international terminal at the Murtala Muhammed airport in the past week.

The airline says a court appeal against the decision is pending. Virgin Atlantic said it had been in talks with potential purchasers for its stake in Virgin Nigeria for several weeks.

Virgin Nigeria says it needs to operate both international and regional services from the same terminal to ensure smooth services for transit passengers.

When Virgin Nigeria was created in 2005, it was seen by the Virgin group as a potential model for its aviation interests in developing countries.

The group has airline interests in the UK, Australia, the US, Belgium and Malaysia.

The Virging Nigeria must have made some great changes to the Nigeria aviation. How much is this going to affect the Nigerian aviation industry after the sale? That`s a big question for the Nigerian government to answer before taking any further step of action.

The incumbent government should consider the MOU that was signed during the Obasanjo regime as valid. Virgin Atlantic threatening to sell it 49 percent shares in the Virgin Nigeria is not the right thing to do at the moment, if I may say. They should wait until the verdit is passed as the case is still pending in the court of law. Withdrawing from the industry will really hurt the nation aviation and Richard Brason as a man with business acumen shouldn`t yeild to such pressure from his board members to do so.

Domestic terminal is supposedly the right wing for any domestic carrier to operate from, and if the Nigerian Lagos domestic airport doesn`t meet the require safety laws that should be a problem that needs attention. Virgin Atlantic being known for good safety and service quality wouldn`t joepardize its afety for anything in developing countries. The Nigerian government have to be question if they could not create a safe environment for air travel yet try to quit a reputable airliners from the averagely safe international terminal.

Nevertheless, both sides have to come to term. For Richard Brason to put the share on stake for sale at the early time is dispproportionate. Nigerian government on the other hand is to blame for agreeing to allow the Virgin Nigeria to operate its dormestic flights fron the international terminal at the begining of operation and at thesame time trying to quit them.

The case can be easily solved through reviews of past MOU and neccessary misunderstanding cleared so that the operation of the airlines can go on smoothly.

Before Virgin Nigeria took it's maiden flight, I was following it's services in it's website and in other mediums and one of the things I read was that they would have similar entertainment features to Virgin Atlantic.

So if these aircraft are going to be the first to boast of personal tvs, what has been the deal for the last 3 years.

This is an airline that is not very urgent in it's commitments.

However it is a great development thanks for the info.

just to let you know this one isn't really Nigerian. this is Bellview sierra leone. it merged back with Bellview in the 90's i think
Bellview Sierra Leone is a subsidiary of Bellview (Nigeria). It was set up by Bellview with local Sierra Leonian individual investors (as the Sierra Leone's flag carrier) initially as a means to effectively get around the monopoly then held by Nigeria Airways under the Nigeria-UK BASA with respect to Nigerian airlines being allowed to operate the London route. By becoming a Sierra Leone registered carrier, Bellview was able to operate a Lagos-Freetown-London route back in those days.

Nigeria: FG, Germany Seal Aviation Pact

A 22-man German delegation weekend met with top officials of the Presidency and Aviation Ministry to concretise the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) President Umaru Yar'Adua signed with his German counterpart, Mr. Horst Koehler, last November.Vanguard gathered that, at the meeting were National Security Adviser, General Sarki Muhktar; Aviation Minister, Mr. Babatunde Omotoba, and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Aviation, Capt. Shehu Usman Iyal.

President Yar'Adua had, in efforts to raise the profile and safety of aviation in the country, reached an accord with President Koehler when the latter visited Nigeria last November.

The delegation comprised officials of Lufthansa (German Airlines), its maintenance arm, Lufthansa Technik (LHT), Fraport (airport authorities), German Air Navigational Services (DFS), LSG Skychefs and other aviation experts from Germany.

They are expected to aid Nigeria's efforts to improve facilities in the nation's international airports, achieve safety in its airspace and secure improved training for pilots, engineers and air traffic controllers.

Members of the delegation also visited the Nnamdi Azikiwe and Murtala Muhammed International airports in Abuja and Lagos respectively to assess areas that needed immediate intervention.

Talks were also said to have begun on the possibility of Lufthansa Tecknik setting up an in-house aircraft maintenance shop in Nigeria where it would function as engineering consultant and technical experts under the existing EASA Part 145 approvals.

According to the sources, Germany will, through the Lufthansa Group, partner with the Federal Government to expand the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja, and help develop the airport as a hub for West Africa.

"This expansion will include the construction of a world class terminal and a second runway for the Abuja Airport.

"On this score, the German delegation requested from Nigeria a comprehensive business plan that would show present future projections of traffic figures (passenger, aircraft movement and daily flight schedule)," said a source.

It was learnt that the German Navigational Services (DFS) also expressed its willingness to offer one free slot each to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) to train their air traffic controllers on advanced training on tower emergency.

The DFS, it was gathered, would equally assist NAMA with on-the-job training for its air traffic controllers (ATCs) in the spirit of the MoU, provided NAMA supplied the details to enable it (DFS) design specific courses for the controllers, and the courses are to be undertaken in both Nigeria and Germany

"The DFS further extended a train-the-trainers programme to NAMA on general air traffic control and tower controllers. It also offered to assist NCAT with simulator training for air traffic controllers," the sources said, adding that the nation received kudos on the TRACON project and offered to help in the areas of training and rating of air traffic controllers on the new system.

Vanguard gathered that further discussions between the Nigerian team and the Germans would continue in Germany early next month to pave way for actualisation of provisions of the MoU.

Although Aviation Minister, Mr. Omotoba, could not be reached for confirmation, a top official of the ministry who preferred anonymity, confirmed the development.:cheers:
