View Full Version : Is it stupid to suggest
Lemonhead II July 6th, 2008, 07:06 AM A bridge from say, Apollo Beach/Ruskin to St. Pete?
It would make the growing southern hillsborough area more accessible to pinellas county. i live in the riverview/brandon area and whether i go north or south it takes me an hour to get to st.pete/clearwater...anywhere in pinellas really. so where's a 5th bridge? :/
if i'm missing something enlighten me...
JBrisco July 6th, 2008, 08:05 AM Don't think the budget will allow for that anytime soon.
I-275westcoastfl July 6th, 2008, 08:13 AM ^^Thats one thing, but just look on google earth, where would you connect a minimum of six lanes of highway to in St.Pete? The only slightly feasible place to build a bridge would be 54th Ave S connecting to somewhere along the Ruskin Shore, but 10 miles of bridge plus other upgrades and expenses, forget about it!
John F July 6th, 2008, 04:51 PM Lemon, nice to see you around.
I don't think it's feasible. While St. Pete and Tampa are urban centers, isn't Ruskin more undeveloped? Wouldn't this just be inviting more sprawl?
Also the cost of the bridge would be huge as it would need to rise high enough so it does not interupt tanker traffic on the shipping channel in the Bay.
Lemonhead II July 6th, 2008, 10:29 PM mmm haha see i knew i was missing something. it would be pretty damn expensive.
i don't think a bridge would necessarily invite sprawl, it's sprawling down there without one anyway.
and thanks, its nice to be around for a change :)

You won't see too much of me around for a while. After this week, I'm taking a hiatus...until probably September...maybe late August at the earliest...I will return here.
Anyways, its always been a poor idea to build any more bridges, though it would be appreciated as another evac. route.

How is it a poor idea?
DShenise July 7th, 2008, 08:54 PM The original post reminds me of a conversation I had with a woman on Isla Del Sol. She was at a DOT informational meeting about replacing the Bayway connection to Tierra Verde. She didn't see why someone needed to "ruin her views", and why couldn't the DOT just build a bridge to the South end of Tierra Verde that would connect to the Skyway approach. She didn't think it was stupid on its face and thought that DOT should at least spend money to study it. Needless money spending on far fetched ideas seems to be a problem for the Bay area.
Oh, Ruskin to St. Pete would have to be as tall as the Skyway to clear the shipping channel or you would have to build a tunnel.
JBrisco July 8th, 2008, 07:03 AM I'm taking a 4-6 year hiatus from this area :P
Orlando to Gainesville to wherever I wanna go for Grad school :P

Haha that lady must be rich because thats unrealistic and would cost way more.
DShenise July 9th, 2008, 03:24 PM No just incredibly stupid and selfish. Like most retirees.
HARTride 2012 July 9th, 2008, 05:46 PM How is it a poor idea?
Simple...its way too expensive. Plus, building another bridge over the shipping channel such as Hillsborough Bay may be heavily opposed by shipping companies who go to the Port of Tampa.

The community needs to stop complaining and just let those drawbridges be replaced. Those people have tons of money, they can move to St. Armands or somewhere they can get a better waterfront view. :bash:
Wait...junkies...the crappy economy won't allow that... :ohno:

Ah ok, good points.

Un-realistic, though.
DShenise July 10th, 2008, 05:42 PM Lets see:
Expensive.
Un-necessary duplication of existing capacity.
Shipping impact.
FAA impact (new tall structure in the middle of what are now open approach paths).
Environmental impact (lots of seagrass beds to destroy there).
Oh, hell lets to it. :bash:
Maxim98 July 10th, 2008, 06:01 PM It would be an all around disaster. Completely. DShenise summed it up simply enough. Why not Ferry service - maybe even with some car capacity? That seems incredibly obvious and I know it's in the area's general plan - I know it's in Apollo Beach's because I helped to write it.
Lemonhead II July 10th, 2008, 09:21 PM haha okay so obviously i should've put a bit more thought into this before asking, i feel stupid haha. but you all make very valid points. but hey it was a nice idea...right? lol :)
guess i just have to move to tampa. everything is closer from there. :P
