D-Mac October 17th, 2002, 12:32 AM Kingdom Centre
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
HEIGHT: 302m/991 feet
FLOORS: 30 floors
COMPLETION: 2002
ARCHITECT: Ellerbe Becket, Omrania and Associates
The Kingdom Centre will have a great impact on the social and commercial environment of Riyadh. It is envisioned as the New International Icon of both Riyadh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a towering symbol of its progress to the new millennium. The tower will dominate the skyline above Riyadh's premier commercial district and its architectural beauty will remain in the memory of the visitors who once visit the Kingdom Center. It is believed that the shopping complex will provide a whole new lifestyle for the capital residents. The Kingdom Centre will also inspire the other renowned groups of companies in the Kingdom to construct prestigious projects contributing to development and international recognition of the city and the country. This project is also adding to the knowledge of the local consultants and contractors in the construction of high-rise buildings that will pave the way in execution of such projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

A very novel design and building that 60m wide skybridge must have been very difficult. The only dumb thing about it is half of it is 30 floors..and the other half are those huge arms.
Caledon1981 October 17th, 2002, 02:49 AM If i ever have a 4000 ft beer ill know where i can open it!! ;) LOL. .
yeah i read that they dont have a height limit in Riyadh, but they have a 30 floor limit. . thats odd . .
forgot to rate it. . . 7.5/10 for being innovative

I do agree with you
AG October 17th, 2002, 11:41 AM Very clever way of getting around a 30 level limit. A bit wide, but very curvy and glassy.
8.5/10
SUNNI October 17th, 2002, 02:16 PM HOLI :eek2: 30 stories and its 296m?! that KOOL! 10/ 10!...hmm, whats that hole used for?
baqthier October 17th, 2002, 03:14 PM one of the world's best looking skyscrapers!
9.5/10
DamienK October 17th, 2002, 04:52 PM Simple and unique design. I like it! 9.5/10. I saw a documentary on the construction of this building and its rival across town, the Al Faisaliah (I can pronounce it correctly now!) Center. The princes who commisioned these two towers could not get around the 30 storey height limit, so with the Al Faisaliah the architects put in a high lobby, observation floors (visible under the K braces) and a round restaurant below stacks of telecommunication platforms and a lantern.
In the documentary the architects of Kingdom Center showed various models of previous designs, none as simple and effective as the built design, and said that the prince rejected all of them. Finally they came up with the present design, built a model of it, and when the prince saw it for the first time he put his arms around it and said, "This is the tower I want."
Sunflower October 17th, 2002, 10:10 PM looks great :)
9/10
rj2uman October 19th, 2002, 02:21 AM 10/10 I love this one! So awesome!
giallo October 19th, 2002, 02:50 AM Cool but not cool. 7.0
enzo October 21st, 2002, 01:40 PM I adore this building.:D A fitting symbol for the world's most successful, family owned petrol-station.
9.5/10
ryanr October 21st, 2002, 04:28 PM Nice tower. A tall massive tower but it only has 30 floors...:ohno: Sort of a waste.
Anywayz 8/10.

Why is there a 30 storey limit? But the tower can be structurally taller....:?
250gto October 21st, 2002, 05:41 PM 9. Hole is too big. Looks misproportioned. Still a spectacular design, though.
Subdude October 22nd, 2002, 01:53 AM Well, I suppose giant bottle-openers make as much sense as anything else. And it's nothing if not original.
7/10
CTroyMathis October 23rd, 2002, 01:42 AM Such an intriguing and unique super structure. I saw that superb documentary on it's construction as well. Very interesting what all went into creating this giant. It deserves it's showcased splendid isolation, for it may look bizarre if it were in the middle of a dense tall downtown cluster. 9.
luis4083 October 26th, 2002, 11:58 AM beautiful design...
972 ft and only 30 storeys?
how many meters were alotted on each floor?
Amazing!

SteelCity32 October 26th, 2002, 08:11 PM This is one of my most favorites. I would move it here. I like this one a lot. 10/10
Umawi October 27th, 2002, 01:35 AM 10/10.... very pure, very simple.
Francis20 November 2nd, 2002, 08:26 PM what's that hole for?
6/10
Steven November 4th, 2002, 09:23 PM I like it because it looks like a giant potato peeler.
8.5/10
DrumCorpsAlum November 6th, 2002, 07:42 PM 9/10. What a badass structure.
queetz November 7th, 2002, 04:29 AM Don't forget to vote for this building for the 2002 Skyscrapers.com Awards!!!! We must ensure that this building is honoured for its majestic beauty and sheer engineering marvel! :okay:
VOTE HERE !!! (http://www.skyscrapers.com/english/buildings/skyscrapers/skyscraperscomaward/)
...and don't forget to log in when you vote to ensure it is counted! :guns1:
Liz L November 7th, 2002, 02:19 PM 7.5/10 - Nice height, nice curtain glass facade, but confound it, it still looks like a giant can opener! Maybe if they'd added a few setbacks or something...
CtrlAltDel November 8th, 2002, 05:53 AM I've just recently discovered this building, I love it. One of my new favorites. 9.5/10
Noonos November 8th, 2002, 09:03 AM luv it! They should light it up more but, 10
CTroyMathis November 10th, 2002, 02:38 AM I'd love to see this super structure in a setting that included Fountain Place in Dallas and the Bank of China in Hong Kong. Would be cool! Of course, I'd add Shanghai's hole-in-the-top - when it's built. ;)
Umawi November 10th, 2002, 09:36 PM I heard Rafiq Al Hariri (Lebanon's prime minister and a multi-billionare) will build a super skyscraper in Ritadh, maybe larger than the Kingdom Centre. It's kinda like New York in the 20s and 30s, eveyrone wants to build the highest skyscraper.
Jeff from Winnipeg November 11th, 2002, 02:28 AM It looks awesome at night! Who cares about all the wasted space when it looks so damn cool?! ->9/10
Bobdreamz December 14th, 2002, 07:46 PM very unique design for a skyscraper though I must say it looks more like a monument than an actual building & at 30 stories not very functional for an office building but that seems to be the case in Saudi Arabia...for design & engineering it gets a 9/10.
crazyhorse_88 December 21st, 2002, 07:51 PM I ALSO VOTED ON THE SKYSCRAPERS.COM AWARD ON THIS ONE :guns1: :? >(
9.5/10 ;) :guns1: :bash: ;) :guns1: :bash: ;) :guns1: :bash: ;) :guns1: :bash: ;) :guns1: :bash: ;) :guns1: :bash: ;) :guns1: :bash: ;) :guns1: :bash: ;) :guns1: :bash: ;) :guns1: :bash:

A nice structure, but it sits alone in Riyadh.
Bahraini Spirit December 29th, 2002, 01:30 AM simply one of a kind. i would give it 10 out of 10.
Monkey January 2nd, 2003, 04:33 AM Well, the campaign seems to have worked: the Kingdom Centre MADE the #1 spot in the skyscrapers.com competition! :guns1:
Cliff January 2nd, 2003, 12:28 PM Not bad, 7.5/10
They should build a 50m lobby, 15m celings, extra thick floors so the height for 30 storeys would be 500m:D
And poof! You get the world's tallest building and there's no spire to argue about
Add something like Kingdom Centre's roof and a spire, you get a height of 700m
Now beat that!:D
SeeMacau January 3rd, 2003, 04:49 AM One of my most favourite skyscraper
9/10
Lt AWACS January 13th, 2003, 06:29 AM Just saw it finished for the first time (on my last few months in Saudi). It gets points for sticking out on the skyline in that area (much like the williams in Houston).
,5 off for some wasted space and ground scape.

Ciao,
Lt-AWACS, watching you from 30,000ft
breezyboy69 January 13th, 2003, 06:57 AM wow i like it! 9/10!
Leienaar February 4th, 2003, 01:52 AM Between those large empty peaks there should be a flaming eye in stead of just a bar of metal, just like in Barad-dur, the tower of the Dark Lord Sauron from Lord of the Rings!
1+2=3 February 10th, 2003, 03:21 PM Interesting structure, but far from beautifull
6/10

The Messiah February 25th, 2003, 07:26 PM Design is good.Just too bad that it's placed in Riyadh.
8.5/10

Oaronuviss March 7th, 2003, 05:39 AM I really do like this building. It's HUGE and beautiful.
:( Too bad it belongs to a pyscho Sultan.

bay_area March 8th, 2003, 04:16 PM This is a total signature-nice color, daring design. But one of these types of icons is enough for 1 city-any more would be too much IMO.

Pilot training?
I'll give this one an 8, very unique design
Evergrey April 11th, 2003, 04:56 AM 7.5 It does look pretty good... but it's extremely excessive for only being 30 floors
Wisma April 15th, 2003, 11:18 AM 8/10. Nice but I like his taller brother that u/c in Shanghai.
airsickpenthousedweller April 16th, 2003, 02:45 AM Looks nicer if you are religious, I guess. Hope they allow small planes to fly through it. If not, then it's a lousy building.
TropicalSQ744 May 5th, 2003, 07:21 PM Gem of the Middle East.. The shape looks great but somehow its a little fat too.. :) But really this scraper is about class.. One look at it and you will continue to stare at it for quite sometime.. Very eye catching ;) The hole in the top is a very clever way to work around the 30 floor limit ! :D
10/10
Sebastiaan May 12th, 2003, 05:39 PM That is the skycraper that won the skyscrapers.com competition!

deep sea buildings May 12th, 2003, 06:27 PM i'm surprised it only has 30 floors!! i give 7/10
james2390 June 14th, 2003, 04:01 AM 3 or less, i dont like this one
New Jack City July 15th, 2003, 05:29 AM 7/10...It suits it's location well and is a good example of how culture influences architecture, though it's a bit odd looking and futuristic for me.
trickykid July 28th, 2003, 04:04 PM i love its sheer futurism and sculptured form. if only other buildings were this daring. 10/10
Dennis August 14th, 2003, 04:33 PM best skyscraper in arabia
10/10 :guns1:
AtlanticaC5 August 27th, 2003, 09:41 PM Well, what can I say? It's a giant bottle-opener, but it looks pretty good...8/10
SFtoBoise September 2nd, 2003, 03:04 PM 6.5/10
Labrador September 2nd, 2003, 03:49 PM 8.5/10 :)
It's an extremely unusual design. It's hard to believe it only has 30 floors - I thought they would've continued the floors all the way up the 'arms' either side of the hole.
Patrick September 7th, 2003, 07:39 PM that's so damned cool
9.5
Trances October 14th, 2003, 08:49 AM So grand
Saw soem thing on discorvery Channel on how this was built and hungry for more infortmation on it !
Not sure I would ever go as sorta far from places unless in transit
Still great images
Primo October 16th, 2003, 02:37 AM Is a very original skyscraper so I give it a 10/10 for the building, but I will give it a 5/10 for the context( this building is just alone in the skyline, it looks too huge in a city that has just two buildings)
JorgeR October 24th, 2003, 02:27 AM awesome building, I'll give it a 10
Fabio November 8th, 2003, 04:09 AM 9.5/10

Aquarius December 20th, 2003, 06:25 PM Fantastic design, modern, very clean and original 9,5/10
7 World Trade May 7th, 2004, 06:20 AM the huge opening's attractive, but it takes up too much of the builing. i mean, it's 300m tall, but only 30 stories! that's crazy. the majority of the buildings half as tall have 30+ stories too.
8.5
Orfeo May 7th, 2004, 06:25 AM 9/10

detroitboy04 June 30th, 2004, 03:33 AM With ONLY 30 floors that means there's 33 FEET between each floor!!
MUST BE VERY LUXURIOUS!!
yoyo22 July 15th, 2004, 10:33 PM 8/10
Stunning, breathtaking design. Truly a great shape, nice colors, astonishing work, original (no longer unique). The side profile is amazing, and the curvature great, although the length of it is a little too big for my taste and its a little inpractical. Plus, I wouldnt want a skyline with only these guys.
LibertyTwo July 16th, 2004, 02:50 PM So I know this may be opening a can of worms and folks are very vehement about the whole height thing but here is a question:
What is so different about Kingdom Centre, One Emerites Tower, the Domiko Building (I know I spelled it wrong, but Tokyo's tallest), and other such "buildings" that are just ornamental in half their height...that is, why does a spire not count, but if you enclose the space like Kingdom Centre does, it counts towards the overall height?
I can see the opposing point to this, it is technically still a building, but then the question is -- how is this not "cheating" to attain height, whereas folks just barrage poor Freedom Tower calling it a cheat for having all the lattice work...I hate Freedom Tower's design, so I am not sticking up for it...I do kinda feel badly for the building...it is like a handicapped child born prematurely...it was not the kids fault, it is just how the dice rolls in life ;-)
But anyone care to comment on if they think Kingdom Centre etc are "cheats" as well just as badly as say Freedom Tower and Petronas
;-)
Wu-Gambino July 16th, 2004, 05:58 PM I just realized that but the biggest cheater by far is Burj Al Arab, that thing isn't even 700 feet tall.
LibertyTwo July 16th, 2004, 11:13 PM I know, they all do it really, even Taipei101 has the top floors above the occupational space, SWFC has the ornamental top with the hole, why is that not cheating in the true sense that people use cheating when describing Freedom Tower since it is all the same
Wu-Gambino July 16th, 2004, 11:16 PM I think if we change the official height to the height of the highest occupied floors, things would be better.
Unless China makes each story 40 feet high.
luis July 16th, 2004, 11:25 PM Really nice 9/10
yoyo22 July 16th, 2004, 11:38 PM I agree Naptown.
Thats been my idea (although I never suggested it here) for a long long time. People will still find loopholes, but it more accurately describes a building, in my opinion.
hongkiu July 17th, 2004, 07:44 PM 9.5!
Ellatur August 10th, 2004, 03:45 AM one of the best symbol for Saudi Arabia, 9.5

Are there floors or any habitable areas surronding that hole???, perhaps the floors only go up untill the hole and that's how they were able to evade the 30 story rule.
wajz August 24th, 2004, 01:02 AM Quite possibly the most elegant skyscraper in the world. 10/10!!!

ocupa el Puesto 5 como mejor skyscraper of the world.......solo superrados por
1 Petronas Towers
2 Taipei 101
3 shung Hing Square en Shenshen
4 Burj al Arab Hotel en Dubai.....y el 5 puesto para Kingdom centre..jeeee

Wow, that glass in some of the pics is amazing- almost looks like velvet. Great design and suited to an area that would embrace such a style. You get an entirely different feeling from the building depending on what angle you're looking at it. It's a beauty!

Its loneliness gives it the look of some ancient alien monument, somehow still shiny and untouched by time. Just great.

I love this one. The design is totally unique and fits for Riyadh.
jpq21 June 7th, 2005, 03:25 AM innovative, but awkward. I think Shanghai world Finance Centre will look alot better, it'll be slicker and look alot more like a supertall, also more elegant and in a better city.

"Kingdom Centre, in Riyadh, is the tallest skycraper in Saudi Arabia. With a height of 302 m (992 ft), it is considered the 25th tallest building in the world. The tower is built on area of 94,230 square meter land, while the whole centre is built on a total area of 300,000 square meter.
The Kingdom Centre is owned by Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a prince of the Saudi royal family, the total cost of the project was 1,717 Million Saudi Arabian Riyals and the contract was taken by Saudi Arabian Bechtel. Kingdom Centre is situated in Al-Urubah Road between King Fahd Road and Olaya Street in the growing business district of Olaya in Riyadh. Kingdom Centre is the winning building of the Skyscrapers.com Award 2002, selected as the "best new skyscraper of the year for design and functionality". Also a three-level shopping center fills the east wing. The mall won a major design award. The large opening is illuminated at night in continuously changing colors.
Besides the shopping mall, the Centre includes a Four Seasons Hotel and state of the art apartments. The ellipse motif taken from the tower's footprint appears also in the light fixtures, ceiling panels, entrance canopy, wastebaskets, and furniture."-wikipedia

Oriolus October 1st, 2005, 04:30 AM Even though normally I really like glass the facade of Kingdom Centre is a little dissapointing to me. It needs something more, something to break it up a bit. But this building does get points for iconic form and the facade is still quite impressive. 7.5/10

Adam from Oz November 25th, 2005, 12:09 PM They achieved the impossible - making a 296m building look stumpy. Too wide and the hole goes down too far for balance.
But, it's simple, different and shiny..
7.5/10
Cheers,
Adam

lancetop December 3rd, 2005, 11:02 PM Now this is one futuristic tower! Too bad more architectural flourishes and embellishments weren't incorporated into the design. But it's still a fabulous idea, perhaps not taken quite far enough (?) It's unique, bold, even fearless. I rate it a 9.

Absolutely amazing looking structure. So well finished; even looks ethereal in some of those pictures. Amazing curves, materials, and profile. Commanding for a reason contrary to that of most buildings: it has presence because of an utter lack of mass in its design rather than an excess of it, and for this it is a stunning achievement. Color compilation is flawless. Truly a unique and great design.
Scruffy88 January 12th, 2006, 05:18 AM 10/10 One of my top 3 favorite buildings in the world. 972 floors and 30 floors. That alone has to be a record. But there was a 30 floor limit in that city without there being a height limit so its a clever way to get around it. The design is nearly flawless, the reflective glass is awe inspiring. This is an icon for the middle east and one of the greatest towers ever. period.
SkyLerm February 19th, 2006, 07:35 PM I love so much this building!! 10/10
