ArchieTheGreat April 9th, 2009, 11:31 AM After seeing the photo's of Malaysia's stadiums I have a couple of questions. Is Kuala Lumpur going to bid for an Olympic games soon as it has the majority of facilities available? I think it would be a possibility as I can see the IOC choosing cities that have high quality venues already present. Do you see Malaysia ever bidding for a world cup? Judging from the photo's you havea better set of stadiums than Indonesia.

nazrey April 9th, 2009, 08:25 PM Malaysia To Host 2010 World Cup If India Fails - FIH
April 09, 2009 23:21 PM
NEW DELHI, April 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia may well be the next venue if Indian hockey authorities fail to put their house in order within the next six months to remain as host for the men's 2010 World Cup in Delhi.
International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Leandro Negre urged India to create a single body to govern hockey affairs in the country and also replace the existing ad-hoc committee that was currently in charge.
"(The) internal affairs have to be solved by Indian hockey. For FIH, according to our statutes, we need a single body before we can start the world cup, its essential for the world cup. Not possible to run the world cup without it.
"Our decision is to stage the world cup in India, no doubt about it but FIH also has plan B. It will be in Asia. Malaysia is prepared to host it, and they have the experience to organise major events successfully.
"We are pleased and that is our plan B," Negre, leading a five-member delegation to India, to gauge the host's preparations, told media here today.
In India, the men and women hockey activities are managed by two different bodies unlike in other countries, which is administered by a single federation or authority, as required by FIH rules.
Indian hockey is in a quagmire, after the India Hockey Federation led by K.P.S Gill was dissolved when one of its high-ranking official was exposed by local television for accepting bribes to include players in the national squad.
Gill had filed a law suit against the Olympic Council of India and the case would be heard in July this year, giving little time for officials to sort out their issues and call for fresh elections to set up a national body.
"India is the only country that has two separate bodies to run the women's and men's hockey and that is a serious problem. In six months everything has to be settled," said Negre.
Malaysia who had hosted the men's World Cup in 1975 and 2002, had also expressed interest in staging the most prestigious hockey event when the Malaysian Hockey Federation declared they are ready to play host if India faced problems.

Malaysia Can Only Bid For Olympics After 2020 - Ismail Sabri
July 14, 2008 23:13 PM
http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v5/newsindex.php?id=346120
KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysia can only bid to host Olympic Games after 2020 when the country becomes a developed nation, the Dewan Rakyat was told Monday.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this was because the hosts of Olympic Games before that had already been determined.
He said huge funds were needed to host an international sports meet like the Olympics.
Malaysia was more interested to stage Asian Games first to qualify as an Olympic Games host, he said when winding up debate on the Mid-Term Review of the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
He was replying to a question from Datuk Dr Mohd Fuad Zarkashi (BN-Batu Pahat) who proposed to the government to lobby for the next Olympic Games.
Khairy Jamaluddin (BN-Rembau) who interceded asked the government to focus on harnessing Olympic sports instead of non-Olympic sports like bowling.
Ismail Sabri said although sports like bowling, sepak takraw and squash were not included in the Olympics, they had brought glory to the country.
"The ministry will consider harnessing Olympic sports especially those which Malaysia has the potential," he said.

Delegates call for Fifa watch to ensure fair polls

HAMMAM: Will step down as AFC president if he loses the Fifa elections
COVERT listening devices and disguised closed-circuit cameras at the upcoming Asian Football Confederation (AFC) election in Kuala Lumpur.
Sounds like a partial script from an espionage movie? Shrink, shudder, suspect, shun... what do you do? This distressing “element of fear” is creating scary psychological ruffles within the AFC fraternity as they worry that it would affect the democratic election process. And more than half of Asia’s 46-member confederation have asked Fifa to intervene.
Some delegates said cameras could be placed close to the voting booths and their photos taken during Friday’s secret ballot to decide the post of Fifa executive committee member (West Asia). It sees a straight fight between incumbent Mohamed Hammam, who is the AFC president, and newcomer Sheikh Salman Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, the president of the Bahrain FA and a member of the Bahraini royal family.
Led by Kuwait and Bahrain, 24 countries — seven from West Asia, six from South and Central, three from Asean and eight from East Asia — wrote to Fifa to monitor the election, which they believe could be tainted with unethical conduct.
Lashing out strongly, Kuwait FA vicepresident Faisal Al-Dakheel said: “This is totally undemocratic. It is tantamount to robbing the privacy of members, and their right to vote for whom they want.”
The joint letter called on Fifa to “supervise the election procedure as per Fifa and AFC statutes...and for Fifa to provide a directive not to allow any camera or mobile camera phones at the site of voting”.
Sheikh Salman, in his first Press conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, commented that “there’s no trust and transparency for a fair election”.
“The element of fear among the voters is prevalent and the 24 concerned countries in the AFC family have sought Fifa’s help to assure a very fair and free election,” he said.
“Cameras must be used the right way... not to harm transparency and to create unnecessary distress. There must be fairplay.”
The acrimonious war of words during the recent campaign had created an unhealthy atmosphere among the 46-member countries, something unprecedented in the world’s largest continent.
If Hammam loses that powerful Fifa position, he has said he will step down as AFC chief despite his term running until 2011. The Qatari has held the Fifa seat for 13 years and has led Asian football since 2002.
“What we want is for everyone, all associations, to have their say and to express their opinions with absolute freedom,” said Sheikh Salman, who is running under a pragmatic “Asia for Change” slogan.
“We want to promote equality among member associations, transparency within the AFC organisation, with an emphasis on transparency in reporting AFC finances, and promoting unity for the development of Asian football.”
Sheikh Salman is “very optimistic” of his chances for the Fifa executive committee member post. And when asked about the AFC presidency, he said: “I don’t want to be the president. It is up to the AFC family to choose the president.
“Whether I’m here or not, it is time for Asia for Change. The recent election campaign is a very strong signal that many in the AFC family are not happy.
“The voices of Asia must be heard. Asia is right now divided because of the growing unhappiness. There must be freedom of speech for the betterment of Asian football.”

Originally known as the FA Premier League Asia Cup, the tournament is the only Premier League-affiliated competition to have been held outside England.
The Asia Trophy is held once every two years in odd years, to avoid conflicts with the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Football Championship tournaments.

nazrey May 18th, 2009, 06:24 AM BWF To Introduce New Format For 2010 KL Thomas Cup
May 17, 2009 20:46 PM
By Dan Guen Chin
GUANGZHOU, May 17 (Bernama) -- The 2010 Thomas/Uber Cup finals to be hosted by Malaysia will see a new format, aimed at eliminating the suspicion of teams purposely losing matches for their own benefit.
What happened in the final round in Jakarta last year where certain teams fielded weakened sides, especially in the Thomas Cup, during the preliminary round matches in order to lose so as avoid certain opponents in the knock out stages, has prompted the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to review the current format.
The current format calls for 12 teams, including the host, which made it past the five qualifying venues, to be divided into four groups and after a round robin format, the winner of each group advance into the knock out stages of the quarter-finals.
The teams which finish second and third in each group will then play each other for the other available ticket to the last eight, which means all 12 teams in the competition, irrespective of how they finished in the group stages will have a crack at the title.
But a BWF Events committee recommendation which was endorsed by the council recently, has decided that in the 2010 edition, the third placed team after the group matches, will be eliminated from the tournament.
"And then there will be a draw to decide which of the four teams that finished second in their respective groups, play the group winners in the knock-out stages.
"I feel the new format will remove all those suspicion of teams throwing away matches in the early rounds to jockey for positions. Also the decision to eliminate the third placed team after the round robin is to make matches more competitive," said Paisan Rangsipitkho, chairman of the events committee and also the newly elected deputy president of the BWF.
Paisan also hinted that there could be changes to the Sudirman Cup format in the next edition.
"Right now my committee is looking at various options including a proposal that all teams in the competition have a chance to win the trophy instead of the present format which only allows the eight teams in division one to have a shot at the title.
"We expect a final decision on the proposal to be submitted to the council for endorsement," he added.
A total of 34 teams took part in the 2009 edition with the teams divided into four divisions.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/87/Circuit_Sepang.png/260px-Circuit_Sepang.png
http://www.maleisie.be/images/wallpapers/sepang_circuit_02.jpg
The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is the venue used for the Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix, A1 Grand Prix as well as the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix. It is also used as a venue for many other major motorsport events.
Widely regarded as a benchmark for other Grand Prix venues, the Sepang circuit boasts superb pit garage and media facilities, as well as impressive grandstands and patron amenities. Some complaints have been raised regarding the unevenness of the surface, as the track appears to be slowly sinking. This is possibly due to the fact that Sepang was built on the site of a former swamp.
The circuit was designed by renowned German designer Hermann Tilke, who would subsequently design the impressive new facilities in Shanghai, Bahrain and Turkey.
The main circuit, normally raced in a clockwise direction, is 5.54 kilometres long, and is noted for its sweeping corners and wide straights.[1] The layout is quite unusual, with a very long back straight separated from the pit straight by just one very tight hairpin.
Other configurations of the Sepang circuit can also be used. The north circuit is also raced in a clockwise direction. It is basically the first half of the main circuit. The course turns back towards the pit straight after turn 6 and is 2.71 kilometres long in total.
The south circuit is the other half of the racecourse. The back straight of the main circuit becomes the pit straight when the south circuit is in use, and joins onto turn 8 of the main circuit to form a hairpin turn. Also run clockwise, this circuit is 2.61 km in length.
Sepang International Circuit also features kart racing and motocross facilities.

KUALA LUMPUR, 26 June (Bernama) -- Malaysia has achieved a milestone in tennis when Kuala Lumpur won the right to host the prestigious ATP World Tour 250 for a period of five years from this year until 2013.
After a highly competitive bidding process against three other cities in Asia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Friday officially announced that the inaugural Malaysian Open Kuala Lumpur would be held at the 16,000-capacity indoor Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Sept 26 till Oct 4.
"I am very pleased that Malaysia will be hosting the ATP World Tour 250 tournament which is an international event on par with the annual Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix," he said at the launching of the tournament, here today.
Najib said the staging of the event could help to promote Malaysia as a tourism destination internationally and promote the sport and healthy lifestyle among Malaysians.
He hoped the tournament would inspire Malaysians and that one day Malaysia would produce a talented player who could win the men's singles titles at this ATP World Tour event.
The ATP World Tour Malaysian Open Kuala Lumpur, to be organised by IMG, a world leader in sports and lifestyle marketing, will carry a total prize money of USD947,750 (RM3,345,557).
Tournament director Nick Freyer, who is also IMG Senior Vice-President and Head of Tennis for Asia, confirmed the participation of seven prominent men's singles tennis players to play at the Malaysian Open Kuala Lumpur.
The seven men's singles are world no. 8 Fernando Verdasco (Spain), Beijing Olympic silver medalist and world no. 10 Fernando Gonzales (Chile), world no. 11 Nikolay Davydenko (Russia), world no. 12 Robin Soderling (Sweden), world no. 14 Gael Monflis (France), world no. 21 David Ferrer (Spain), and Japanese teenage sensation Kei Nishikori.
Kuala Lumpur is the 64th tournament in the ATP calendar this year and the fifth city in Asia after Tokyo, Bangkok, Beijing and Shanghai, to host the world renowned tennis tournament.
Under the event's format, the main draw will be from Sept 28 until Oct 4, with 28 players clashing out in the men's singles and 16 pairs in the men's doubles.
Meanwhile, in the men's singles qualifying round on Sept 26 and 27, four slots will be allocated for top Malaysian players out of 32 players.
Also present at the launching was the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who is also the patron of the tournament.

PUTRAJAYA, June 29 (Bernama) -- Disabled athletes in the country will finally have a place to call their own, when a RM40 million Paralympic Sports Development centre is build by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, next to the Kampung Pandan sports complex in two years.
Youth and Sports minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the centre would be completed in two years, with facilities catered for the needs of disabled athletes.
"The setting up of the centre is the government's recognition and contribution towards developing paralympic sports in the country," he told reporters after opening a Development of High Performance Paralympic Sports seminar, here Monday
He added that the centre would comprise an administration block, hostel to accommodate 300, indoor courts, swimming pool, archery range and other sporting facilities.
"Paralympic sports is a very special area that need to be enhanced by involving more disabled athletes who can be trained to compete against the best in the world," he said.
Shabery said the seminar, held for the first time, was aimed at increasing the participation of various agencies that are directly involved in paralympic sports and to set up a systematic structure to ensure the direction and development of paralympic sports.

nazrey July 4th, 2009, 12:31 PM Malaysian group tables RM456m bid for Newcastle
NST Online » Local News 2009/07/03
KUALA LUMPUR: A group of Malaysian businessmen is believed to have begun discussions over the purchase of English Championship side Newcastle United from its owner Mike Ashley.
The Malaysian-led consortium, believed to include some of Malaysia’s well-known business leaders, is said to have tabled an £80 million (RM456 million) bid for the troubled club, which was relegated from the English Premier League last season.
The consortium was shown around St James’ Park and the Magpies’ training ground in Benton on Thursday with a view to buying the club.
Britain’s Press Association (PA) reported that the potential buyers
were given a guided tour of the club’s facilities by club managing
director Derek Llambias before returning to London to continue discussions.
The group could not be identified as all interested parties were required to sign non-disclosure agreements.
Ashley is demanding STG100 million (RM576 million) for the club and has insisted he will sell to the first consortium to come up with the cash.
PA said Ashley and the people closest to the ongoing negotiations were optimistic that significant progress could be made within 48 hours, and while there was still much ground to be covered, it appeared things were now moving more rapidly.
A takeover would be effectively completed when the prospective buyer signs a sales purchase agreement, and they could then get on with the business of appointing a manager and starting to re-shape the playing squad.
The Shield Gazzette newspaper quoted sources as saying that former England striker Alan Shearer is the favoured managerial candidate among most of those keen on buying United.
If the deal is successful, it would mark the first time a group of Malaysians would have direct involvement in a prominent English team.
Newcastle were put up for sale for the second time only days after the club's relegation from the Premier League on May 24.
At least four consortia have entered into detailed discussions, with an American-based group among the most advanced, while former chairman Freddy Shepherd has also been heavily involved.

SHEAR AGONY ... Alan Shearer is still
uncertain about his future as Newcastle boss
A MALAYSIAN group has emerged as favourites to buy crisis club Newcastle United.
Rival bidders are considering their next move after the Malay consortium paid a flying visit to Tyneside yesterday.
Their offer does not match owner Mike Ashley's £100million asking price, and is believed to be nearer £80million.
And it does nothing to clear up the mystery over Alan Shearer's future at the club. He is currently manager in waiting while caretaker boss Chris Hughton oversees pre-season training.
The new owners' first priority will be to appoint a boss to mastermind a return to the Premier League after relegation last May.
Shearer, who took charge for the final eight games of last season, has been waiting in the wings after initially hoping to be appointed by Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias within days of the end of last season.
Ashley's decision to put the club on the market once again left Shearer in limbo, and while several of the bidders have indicated the Toon legend is their choice, the intentions of others, including the Malaysian group, are unknown.
Shearer remains keen on the job, and will hope to have his answer within days with vital time having already been lost.
While the Malaysians are in the driving seat and are favourites to launch a successful takeover, their move has prompted several of the remaining consortia to step up activity.
An America-based group has been among the front-runners for some time — and representatives are said to have visited the training ground earlier this week — while former chairman Freddy Shepherd, the Profitable Group from Singapore and would-be investors from Oman and South Africa have been heavily linked with the club.
There are suggestions that a European investor has joined a race which seems to be entering the last lap.
Caretaker boss Hughton will take those players who returned to Tyneside on Wednesday morning to their pre-season training camp in Ireland on Sunday, where they will be joined by Damien Duff following his extended break.
They will play Shamrock Rovers in Dublin next Saturday, just four weeks before they open their Coca-Cola Championship campaign at West Brom on August 8.
By then, there are likely to have been significant changes to the playing staff as a wage bill of £74million is severely trimmed.
Shearer told Ashley and Llambias of his plans — who he wanted to keep and potential targets — at the end of last season, but new owners or a different manager may have other ideas.
One of those who seems certain to have no future should Shearer return is controversial midfielder Joey Barton, reportedly a loan target for Birmingham, while the Magpies are being linked with a move for out-of-contract Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell.

nazrey July 8th, 2009, 06:02 AM RM9.0 Million Facelit For Larkin Stadium (http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_pictures/asia/malaysia/johor_bahru_larkin.shtml)
July 06, 2009 17:10 PM
By Dan Guen Chin
JOHOR BAHARU, July 6 (Bernama)-- The grandstand area at the Larkin stadium has been ordered closed with immediate effect as the authorities are preparing a RM9 million face lift for the 45-year old structure.
The fear of the roof over the area collapsing has prompted Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek who made a one-hour inspection of the stadium, built in 1964, to tell the Stadium Board authority to cordon off the grandstand area.
It's a case of rather be safe than sorry.
"But I am not saying that the roof is in danger of collapsing anytime now. But after the tour where we noticed that the steel structures supporting the grandstand roof have corroded badly. We including the Johor Executive Councillor for Sports, Jais Sarday and the director of the Johor Sports Council(JSC), Ismail Rahman decided that it's best we take pre-emptive measures, just in case.
"I am sure all of us do not want a repeat of the Kuala Terengganu State Stadium episode two months ago where the roof collapsed. But luckily no lives were lost," said Ahmad Shabery.
The Forensics department of the Public Works Department has been called in to make an in-depth study to determine whether the roof structure is safe or not.
"Until the result is out, we will not allow anyone to go near the grandstand area. But sports activities including M-League matches will go on as usual because the other areas are not affected," added Ahmad Shabery.
The Sports Minister also said that the cause of the corrosion could be due to wear and tear because it has been seventeen years since the roof over the grandstand was built for the 1992 Malaysia Games (Sukma), which Johor hosted.
He added that he had been briefed by the JSC on their plans to give the stadium a new look, which could cost an estimated RM9 million.
"The JSC are talking about a new running track; a new pitch complete with a new drainage system; a new press room and of course a new roof over the grandstand.
"As Sports Minister I am in favour of the proposals because I feel Johor Bahru has the potential to become an international sporting hub and to do so, you need better sporting facilities," he added.

A RECLUSIVE Malaysian billionaire has jumped to the head of the queue to buy Newcastle.
Media mogul Ananda Krishnan is closing in on a deal to end Mike Ashley's nightmare two-year Toon reign - and hopes to make an announcement early next week.
The £95million deal for the club represents loose change to the 71-year-old, who is South East Asia's third-richest man worth £4.5billion.
Other consortia remain in the running to buy the crisis club.
But after making the first significant move in the drawn-out sale, Krishnan is the favourite to take control after meeting Ashley's drastically-reduced asking price - almost £40m less than the sportswear tycoon paid in 2007.
The owner-in-waiting is believed to favour Alan Shearer to be the club's manager.
Like Ashley, Krishnan has kept a low profile as he has built up a powerful business portfolio which includes major interests in oil, entertainment, telecoms and shipping.
Over the years, he has donated millions of pounds to charities and a source said: "Mr Krishnan shuns public exposure and likes to keep a low profile for someone of his stature."
Figures have yet to be confirmed but a significant kitty would be made available for Shearer to use in the transfer market.

nazrey August 1st, 2009, 08:09 PM Japanese firm donates sports centre as 50th Merdeka gift to government

Modern: The 400m synthetic running track at the Panasonic Sports Centre.
THE Panasonic Sports Centre (PSC) in Shah Alam, considered as one of the well maintained and managed sports complex in the country, will be donated to the Sports Ministry.
The Matsushita Group of Companies in Malaysia are the partners of the sports centre, built at a cost of RM34mil in 1991. It was established with the objective of providing sports and recreational facilities for employees.
However last year, the Matsushita Group, based in Japan, as a goodwill gesture, in conjunction with the 50th Merdeka celebrations, decided to hand over the sports centre to the Malaysian government.
A group of high-ranking officials from the Matsushita Group in Japan met the then Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said to seek her opinion.
A PSC officer said the minister was receptive to the proposal and instructed officials from the ministry and National Sports Council (NSC) to pursue the matter.
“We have had a series of discussions and officials from the sports ministry and NSC had visited the PSC. Officials from the Merdeka Stadium board, who manage the sports venues at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, had also visited the PSC,'' said the official.
The officials, from the Merdeka Stadium board, were impressed with the management of the PSC and had expressed their wish to make the PSC a profitable venture. However, the officials from NSC were keen to make the PSC a centre of excellence for sepak takraw and gymnastics. The NSC had voiced out their vision to built a dormitory.
The PSC, houses two football fields, 400m synthetic running track, three tennis courts, three sepak takraw courts, an Olympic size swimming pool, a children's pool and has a seating gallery for 1,100 people. Floodlights have also been installed for night football matches.
The indoor arena can be used for badminton, volleyball, basketball, futsal and table tennis. The indoor arena also has 998 fixed-seats and 2,016 sliding seats. The indoor arena has also been booked for weddings and entertainment shows.
The PSC is well patronised by schools in the Klang Valley. They find the PSC well maintained and also affordable compared to other stadiums in the Klang Valley. Dolphin Sports conduct swimming lessons at the PSC.
The Bon Odori festival is one of most popular events held at the PSC and attracts about 30,000 participants every year. Panasonic Group of Companies in Malaysia also organise their annual sports carnival, involving about 10,000 employees, at the PSC.
Klang Valley teams involved in the M-League had listed the PSC as the home venue.
Former Navy officer T. Kanniappan is currently the manager of the PSC. He has a staff of 12. It is learnt that the 13 staff will be offered VSS. The Merdeka Stadium board are keen to re-employ the staff.
However, the Matsushita Group of Companies have set certain conditions to the Sports Ministry.
“There should not be any structural change made and also employees of Panasonic Group of Companies must be given the privilege to use the facilities,'' said the official.
The delegation from the Panasonic Group of Companies, who had discussions with the Sports Ministry and NSC, has been dissolved.
The Sports Minister is expected to make an official announcement on the takeover soon.

Reliving the past with Merdeka Stadium
Its doors will open for events in December or January

http://www.mmail.com.my/sites/default/files/imagecache/large/stadium_3.jpg
THERE is a fervent attempt to bring the glory back to Merdeka Stadium. And PNB chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji wants to start with staging the Merdeka Tournament annually.
"The stadium will be ready by November. We're looking at opening its doors either by December or perhaps early January," said Ahmad Sarji, also chairman of IIUM and Lawns Bowls Association of Malaysia.
"We want national sports associations to talk to us. We want them to bring their events back. It would be fabulous if the FA of Malaysia organises the Merdeka Tournament where it all started - at Merdeka Stadium."
Merdeka Stadium holds special meaning to the country. It was built for the declaration of Independence on Aug 31, 1957. It was later turned into a sporting hub, hosting a series of events including the Muhammad Ali vs Joe Bugner clash on July 1, 1975, the 1977 SEA Games and the annual Merdeka Tournament.
It also saw concerts by, among others, the late King of Pop Michael Jackson, Kool and the Gang, Celine Dion and Linkin Park.
Modernisation took its toll on Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara, a stone's thrown away. It was almost torn down but due to a public outcry, plans to redevelop the land were shelved. Then came along PNB, promising
to upkeep all 14 acres of the land housing the stadiums and developing the surrounding 19 acres - ranging from posh residential areas to business plazas at a gross development value of RM3 billion.
"PNB is the owner but the stadiums are entrusted with the PNB's Merdeka Heritage Trust Foundation.
"The first phase of restoration works was to commemorate the 50th Merdeka celebrations in 2007. Now we're into our second phase and have spent around RM8.5 million to give Merdeka Stadium its original look," added Ahmad Sarji.
The restoration works will include the construction of the saluting platform at the grandstand, retaining walls, minor repairs and a scoreboard complete with State emblems - almost like what the stadium looked like when it was built.
The upper terraces have been torn down and as such, the seating capacity is now reduced from 45,000 to 20,000 - just as it was in 1957. Also gone is the running track.
Stadium Negara, meanwhile, will house a sports library, a gymnasium and a gallery celebrating historical
feats achieved at both Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara.
"We're got plans for Stadium Negara. Let's keep that for another day," Ahmad Sarji said. Merdeka Stadium was awarded the 2008 Unesco Asia-Pacifi c Heritage Award of Excellence and was declared a National Heritage by the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry earlier this year.
"National stadiums are objects of pride with history. Sadly, many are under-utilised. It is now up to the NSAs to approach us and make use of the facilities.
"They should know the number of spectators expected in the preliminary rounds and the critical stages. Merdeka Stadium is in the heart of town, has ample parking space and excellent public transportation.
"If organisers want to relive past memories, if they want reasonable prices to host a reasonable crowd, then Merdeka Stadium is the place for it," Ahmad Sarji said.
Sportcheck — FAM says why not

PRIDE: Ahmad Sarji with the awards given to Stadium Merdeka
WHY not? That was the immediate reaction from FA of Malaysia (FAM) deputy-president Datuk Seri Redzuan Sheikh Ahmad on utilising Merdeka Stadium as the main venue for football events, including the Merdeka Tournament.
“Obviously, the field must be of international standard as we host international teams. That aside, I feel it would be wonderful to have the matches at Merdeka Stadium,” said Redzuan.
Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PNB) chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji has urged national sports associations, including FAM, to use Merdeka Stadium when it opens its doors again by the end of this year.
Redzuan said the reduced seating capacity would not be a problem.
“We know when there will be fans and when there isn’t going to be a large crowd. We can also use two or more stadiums and shift the venues once the numbers get larger, which would normally be during the more critical stages of a tournament,” added Redzuan.
Merdeka Stadium staged a string of football activities. It saw the likes of the late Mokhtar Dahari, Santokh Singh, Dollah Salleh and national coach K. Rajagobal play on the field.
“We couldn’t organise the Merdeka Tournament and Intercontinental Cup this year due to the swine flu.
“There’s still plenty of time for next year’s edition. Who knows, if all goes well it may be a good idea to use Merdeka Stadium as the venue,” Redzuan added.
Stadium history
MERDEKA STADIUM was constructed in 1956 for Malaysia’s declaration of Independence on Aug 31, 1957.
From its original capacity of 20,000, the stadium was later able to fit 40,000 people and running tracks were included, turning it into a multi-sports facility.
Merdeka Stadium hosted a series of sports, cultural and arts activities, including the 1965 and 1971 SEAP Games, 1977 and 1989 SEA Games, national athletics meets, the annual Merdeka Tournament, the memorable Muhammad Ali vs Joe Bugner heavyweight title clash, a number of concerts including German rock band Scorpions, the late King of Pop Michael Jackson and Hong Kong stars such as Leslie Cheung and Aaron Kwok.
STADIUM NEGARA was declared open on April 10, 1962 by our third King Tuanku Syed Putra. It was the scene of several world badminton triumphs, including the Thomas Cup victory of 1992. It too held several concerts, including Santana in mid-70s, and Disneyland shows.
CHIN WOO STADIUM is anotherfamous landmark in the area. Built in the 1950s by YT Lee, the stadium was a favourite badminton and aquatics hub. It remains so today as it is located in the heart of town. National swimming championships were mostly held there.

Kuala Lumpur hosts ATP World Tour
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Truly Asia brand is set to gain priceless global publicity at the Proton Malaysian Tennis Open, which is part of the ATP World Tour 250 series.
The famous catch phrase will be featured on the Hawk-Eye challenge system, which is the electronic line-calling system used when a player challenges a call on court.
Tournament director Nick Freyer said the system, to be used during the Malaysian Open from Saturday to Oct 4, would be officially known as the “Malaysia Truly Asia Review”.
“Every time a player challenges a call on the centre court, the ‘Malaysia Truly Asia Review’ will swing into action around the world, on televisions across the country and in faraway places, and the four giant screens at the stadium.
“We will be able to see what the correct line-call outcome is through the use of high-speed, high-definition video cameras and powerful computer technology.
“This is going to be a brilliant fan experience and is the first time this has been done in South-East Asia,” he said yesterday at a joint press conference with Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.
Winners of each match on the centre court will also hit signed tennis balls into the stands, giving fans a chance to get their hands on the autographed balls and claim prizes totalling more than RM100,000.
The nine-day tournament at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil has attracted top tennis stars, including world number eight Nikolay Davydenko and ninth-ranked Fernando Verdasco.
Other stars include former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, Robin Soderling (ranked 11th) Fernando Gonzalez (12) and Gael Monfils (13).
Freyer also said former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis and holder of four ATP Tour titles Taylor Dent would be wild card entries in the tournament, together with another “mystery entry”.
Dent, Freyer said, was an inspirational story for Malaysians as he recovered from two major back surgeries and a year in a body cast before recently playing again.
Meanwhile, Dr Ng said tennis fans were in for a treat at the event, given its diversity of players and attractive prizes for fans.
“Malaysia is privileged to be chosen as one of the five ATP World Tour events in Asia. The event, to be telecast globally, will help boost the economy and tourism industry,” she added.

NIKOLAY Davydenko boosted his chances of qualifying for next month's Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London by defeating Spain's Fernando Verdasco to claim his third title of the year at the inaugural Proton Malaysian Open in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
However, it was not an easy final for the Russian top seed as he had to battle long rallies and exhaustion before overcoming Verdasco 6-4, 7-5, in 95 minutes for his first big victory in Asia in front of 6,000-odd fans.
Davydenko received a valuable 250 ranking points while fellow ATP World Tour contender Verdasco earned 150.
The 28-year-old Davydenko is the fifth player this year to win three World Tour titles. Spain's Rafael Nadal and Britain's Andy Murray have both won five, Roger Federer of Switzerland has titled four times, while Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro has also captured three titles.

Russia's Anna Kournikova is the ambassador for the event.
RUSSIAN tennis stars Elena Dementieva and Maria Kirilenko will take on Zheng Jie of China and Sania Mirza of India in a "Russia v Asia" clash at Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam on Dec 19-20.
The tentative format of play is one doubles on the first day and two singles matches the next day.
This is the first time WTA Tour players will play an exhibition in Malaysia as the previous two years featured ATP stars.
World No 5 Elena is a seasoned campaigner on the tour, having won 16 WTA titles and also the gold medal in last year's Beijing Olympics while Maria, who was World No 18 last year, is a rising star.
Zheng Jie's prowess is in doubles and her most memorable year was in 2006 when she and Yan Zi won two Grand Slam titles (Australian Open and Wimbledon).
This year, she created history by becoming the first China player to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals.
Sania, who won the mixed doubles gold with Leander Paes in the 2006 Doha Asian Games, has won one singles and eight doubles titles on the WTA Tour.
The exhibition is also a nice introduction to the Malaysian Open Classic, a new event on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour calendar, to be hosted in Kuala Lumpur next February.
Tourism Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen will launch the Russia v Asia match at the Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur today and joining her will be former star Anna Kournikova, the ambassador of the event.

nazrey October 27th, 2009, 07:04 PM Make sports a way of life
That’s the way to move up tennis ladder, says former queen Kournikova

QUEEN OF tenis: Kournikova (centre) signs on a tennis ball, as Tourism Ministry DG Datuk Mirza Muhammad Taiyab (second from left) and Lawn Tennis Assocation of Malaysia president Datuk Abdul Razak Latiff look on
SPORTS is part of the Russian culture and it is only natural to see the dominance of Russia in tennis.
So says former tennis star Anna Kournikova, who believes that the only way for Asians to succeed at top-level tennis is by embracing the sport as a way of life.
“Yes, there are many talented Asians out there. But we in Russia have many great players as sports is part of the culture,” said Kournikova.
“Sports gave me my life and through my voice and status, I can attract attention to aid the causes (referring to her charity work worldwide).”
Kournikova made a brief appearance for the official launch of the Showdown of Champions 2009 at the Pavilion in Bukit Bintang yesterday.
She is the ambassador for this year’s edition. Among those in previous exhibition matches over the past two years include Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, James Blake, Richard Gasquet, Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe.
Billed as “Asia versus Russia — The Grand Slam”, the two-day affair, scheduled for Dec 19 and 20, will feature the likes of Asian darlings Sania Mirza and Zhang Jie together with Russians Maria Kirilenko and Beijing Olympics gold medallist Elena Dementieva.
Present at the launch were Tourism Ministry director-general, Datuk Mirza Mohammad Taiyab and Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia president Datuk Abdul Razak Latiff.
Kournikova, who was in the country only for the day, did not rule out the possibility of visiting Malaysia again. “It’s been great and people here are just over-friendly. I mean it in a nice way.
“I would love to come back and relax at the beaches and spend more time in KL.”
Clad in a glittering crimson baju kurung and a black scarf, Kournikova admitted she misses her days playing competitive tennis.
Kournikova was renowned in the doubles event, having won the Australian Open in 1999 and 2002. Sadly, nagging injuries forced her out of the scene prematurely as she retired from the WTA tour in 2003.
“Obviously, I miss playing. I’ve been playing for the past 23 years of my life and there are moments when I miss the whole atmosphere.
“But it’s a different life now and there’s so much out there to do. I have come to a point where I can be very picky and choosy with what I want to do and it’s all thanks to my involvement in tennis.”
Abdul Razak, meanwhile, believes that the series of exhibition matches and the recent ATP250 tournament have further spurred the interest of tennis in the country.
“Tennis equipment has seen an increase in sales while more people are renting courts. The interest is there and we’re happy to facilitate such events in the country. The ultimate goal is to get more people to enjoy tennis.”
Anna simply dazzles them
http://www.mmail.com.my/sites/default/files/imagecache/medium/Anna.jpg
ALLURINGLY clad in a sparkling crimson baju kurung that was perfectly complemented by contrasting black kain sarong and selendang, Anna Kournikova’s first appearance in Malaysia was simply a stunner.
The Russian former tennis star was in town for her unveiling as the event ambassador for The Showdown of Champions 2009 during the event’s official launch at Pavillion KL yesterday.
Members of the Press began feeling agitated when the launch was held up for about an hour because of Kournikova’s late arrival — due to a delay in her flight from Miami, via London — but all was made up when the 28-year-old, 5-ft-7 blonde bombshell eventually appeared on stage looking all dazzling and gorgeous in her gleaming outfit.
“I just love it!” said Kournikova, when asked what she thought of her baju kurung.
“I think it’s really beautiful how Malaysia is modern but at the same time traditional. I’m really excited to be here, in a new place. I think it’s a paradise,” she said.
“I must say the people in Malaysia are too friendly! Everybody seems to be always smiling.”
During the Q&A session with the Press, the bubbly Kournikova was a good sport.
When asked what she thought of Malaysian men, based on her observations since arriving in the city, she replied: “Very cute!”
“I love people of all races, but at the end of the day, it’s still the personality that matters,” she added.
After the media conference, Kournikova switched into a different dress, and later posed for snap-happy photographers at the fountain outside the Pavilion.
Curious passers-by, upon recognising the Russian celebrity, quickly took out their cameras to take their own photos of Kournikova.
Although she is one of the most well-known tennis personalities in the world, Kournikova has not won much on the courts. She has only two Grand Slam wins to her name; winning the women’s doubles at the Australian Open in 1999 and 2002 with Swiss ace Martina Hingis.
Hampered by a series of injuries, Kournikova eventually hung up her racket in 2003, but has made several appearances in exhibitions matches — mostly for charity.
Kournikova has also made a name in the modelling world.
One of her most notable shoots was for a shock absorber sports bra ad by Berlei back in 2000, which was made memorable by the witty tagline “Only the ball shall bounce”.
Today, Kournikova spends most of her time doing charity work, among them helping out with children’s welfare programmes.
“I am very passionate about helping kids, so I’m using my celebrity status to help encourage and promote sports among children,” said Kournikova, who is also an ambassador for children’s NGO Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA).
Also on the list of her future charity programmes is a United Service Organisation (USO) visit to Iraq and Afghanistan.

JOHOR BAHARU: Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) can reinstate the 11 sports it had excluded from its calendar as Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced yesterday an RM89 million allocation by Education Ministry for sports and co-curricular activities in schools.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the allocation would enable MSSM to have all the 24 sports in its programme catering for the Under-12, U-15 and U-18.
Early last month, Education Ministry had slashed the annual allocation to MSSM, thus leaving the latter no choice but to reduce the number of sports in the calendar.
The 11 sports excluded were bowling, squash, archery, table tennis, rugby, cricket, sailing, softball, handball, cross-country and chess.
“Initially, many quarters were disappointed with MSSM’s decision to reduce the number of sports from its calendar, but I have issued a directive for the sports to be reinstated.
“The RM89 million allocation will be used in every school and the sports can be held,” he told reporters after officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony of a stadium and sports complex of Educity@Iskandar in Nusajaya.
Muhyiddin said the sports policy reversal of the ministry would be translated into additional allocations under the 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015) for construction of sports infrastructure such as school fields.
“Under the 10th Malaysia Plan, we will develop sports infrastructure in schools. Some schools even do not have fields,” he said.
He also said that the per capita of students participating in sports would also be increased.
Muhyiddin said the ministry was in the process of setting up a sports teacher training institute specially to train teachers to become sports coaches.
Four sports excellence centres in existing teacher training institutes in Johor, Terengganu, Sarawak and Sabah would serve as feeder centres for Raja Melewar Sports Teacher Training Institute in Seremban, he added.
A total of 320 teachers would undergo training in eight sports beginning in the middle of next year, he said.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and Iskandar Investment Berhad chairman Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar were also present at the event. — Bernama

TM Group CEO Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa receiving a TM
Manchester United jersey from Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford
MANCHESTER: Manchester United (MU) and Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) have forged a five-year agreement to link the two brands in marketing campaigns and promotional activities.
With the deal, TM becomes the English Premier League champion’s official integrated telecommunications partner in Malaysia with licensing, intellectual property (IP) and dealership rights to produce and distribute merchandises bearing the club’s crest and team images.
TM’s brand and association with MU will be showcased to 4.2 million fans in Malaysia and more than 330 million fans and football followers worldwide.
The partnership deal, the financial commitments of which were undisclosed, was announced at Old Trafford yesterday by TM group chief executive officer Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa and MU chief executive officer David Gill.
MU manager Sir Alex Ferguson were among those present, along with TM vice-president for group marketing Sherene Azura Azli, and MU commercial director Richard Arnold.
Zamzamzairani described the partnership as “the union of two great brands.”
“We are indeed very happy seeing two champions in their respective fields coming together. TM, one of Malaysia’s most dynamic and innovative telecoms brands, and Manchester United, one the world’s most recognised sports brands and successful football clubs,” he said.
Loyal TM customers and new subscribers will benefit from the partnership by getting opportunities to win trips to Manchester to watch MU home matches in special promotions and contests throughout the five-year contract period.
Zamzanzairani said the deal would cover a broad marketing platform for TM’s products and services, including iTalk prepaid calling cards, Streamyx broadband service and its broadband TV portal, Hypp.TV (www.hypp.tv).
It will also provide MU fans and TM customers in Malaysia access to MU’s latest news, fan videos, team profiles and online contests. Visitors need only register as a member on Hypp.TV, to view the contents and be part of the online fan activities.
Meanwhile, Gill said MU’s tour of the Far East last year showed the strength of feeling that Malaysians had for the club.
“We know that this partnership will help the club to reach the millions of fans we have in Malaysia and MU are delighted that TM has developed from sponsor of a tour match into a full-fledged partner,” he said. — BY M. VEERA PANDIYAN

Almost done: An artist’s impression of the complex
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2010/5/1/central/m_2tar.jpg
All set: The workers are working overtime to complete the complex in time.
RENTAP Futsal Putrajaya, involving about 800 teams, will be the first event to be held at the newly-built RM3.48mil Putrajaya Futsal Complex at Precinct 18 from May 14 to 16.
The complex, a joint venture between the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Putrajaya Corporation (PPj), has 10 futsal courts and one FIFA-size covered court with a gallery and other amenities including a surau, cafeteria, commercial centre, cyber centre and administrative block.
Each of the 10 courts measure 19m by 27m while the main court is 25m by 42m.
The acrylic-based courts are heat resistent and work on the main court, which will have a gallery for 1,000 fans, is expected to be completed in mid-June. About 150 parking bays are available at the complex.
PPj Road and Infrastructure Division, City Development Department deputy director Mohd Nor Alias said the complex was built with funding from the ministry.
“The land belongs to PPj but, after a request from the Sports Minister, we decided to build the futsal complex. An open tender was held and the contractors have completed 97% of work involving the 10 courts,” Mohd Nor said after a visit to the complex recently.
There are two other futsal courts in Putrajaya. They are at Taman Pancarona and are heavily booked. Futsal enthusiasts can use the courts until midnight.
Rentap Futsal Putrajaya, part of the National Youth Day celebrations, has four categories — men’s open, women’s open, boys’ Under-18 and boys’ Under-12 — and offers a total cash purse of RM61,950.
The organisers had anticipated 500 teams but had received almost 50% more than the target.
The opening ceremony of the complex is scheduled on May 8. Teams participating in the Rentap Futsal will have the chance to use the facilities after that.
Mohd Nor said the futsal courts could also be used for volleyball, basketball as well as netball competitions.
However, Mohd Nor said they have yet to determine the rental rates for the public
“It will, however, be affordable to the public,” Mohd Nor said.

nazrey August 19th, 2010, 12:21 PM Plan to redevelop Kajang Stadium
Stories by GEETHA KRISHNAN
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/3/24/central/m_02plan.jpg
In the pipeline: A detailed plan of the proposed Kajang Square project
KAJANG residents will have to bid adieu to the Kajang Stadium if the proposed Kajang Square project takes off.
The plan is to redevelop the stadium into a 2.52ha multi-million ringgit sports complex with futsal and badminton courts, field for tai chi, yoga and aerobic activities, a children’s playground and kiosks selling various wares.
The RM4.5mil project would mean the sacrifice of an iconic structure built in the late 1970s. The Kajang Stadium is a prominent landmark as it is located smack in Kajang town. Its main entrance faces Jalan Kelab while the back portion looks out to Jalan Cheras leading to the bustling Jalan Besar.
In its heyday, many important football league and club matches, involving the likes of celebrated legendary football players Mokhtar Dahari and M. Chandran in action, were played at the stadium to capacity crowds.
Athletic meets, community events and election rallies are still being held there, albeit on a smaller scale.
According to sources from the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) and event organisers, the stadium offers affordable rates.
The Kajang Square idea first surfaced in 2000 when the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) announced that it had regeneration plans for the stadium, alongside suggestions for a Riverine Park, Satay Food Court and Satay Museum as a town-centre tourist attraction.
After a five-year lapse, it was proposed that the stadium, described as under-used, be turned into a public square where people could jog or enjoy a stroll.
MPKj president Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abd Rahman told the media recently that the project would be revamped to feature a different layout and modern facilities, to be presented again to state or federal authorities for approval.
“We are striving to offer sports and leisure facilities under one roof for individuals and families. The Kajang Square project will also draw more tourists to Kajang,” he said.
The Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) has given the green light for the project (State gives green light for project).
Kajang state assemblyman Lee Kim Sin has termed the Kajang Square project as a grandiose scheme.
“I disagree with the concept of centralised facilities when the present ones need upgrading. There is a serious lack of green spaces in the new housing estates and more facilities can be offered in the older neighbourhoods,” Lee said.
“The Bangi sports complex about 15km away is centrally located and well-equipped with facilities. Hence, there is no need for a similar facility in Kajang,” Lee told the StarMetro.
He said pointed out that traffic congestion was also a serious problem, given the Kajang Stadium’s location.
Although parking is available at the Kajang Stadium, the bays are shared between the Dewan MPKj, Bangunan Datuk Nazir and the Medan Satay Kajang. The Kajang Uptown bazaar is also held in the vicinity on Fridays and weekends from 10pm to 2am.
Lee also made references to the Satay Museum and Kajang Point, two projects under MPKj which he viewed as pure wastage of public funds.
The RM1.2mil museum project was stalled in 2001 and was only revived after an additional RM1.6mil was pumped in.
The Kajang Point, with food stalls and souvenir kiosks, was built in 2004 and was only opened recently as part of the proposed RM1.8mil Kajang Waterfront project along the stretch of the Langat River near the stadium. The Kajang Point has yet to attract the crowds.
Kajang Stadium to go

THE walls of the 40-year-old Kajang Stadium will come down at 10am on Sunday.
The demolition of the stadium, which has been put on hold pending a review by the Selangor state executive council last year, will finally be torn down to make way for the Kajang Square project.
The stadium, built in the late 1970s, will be turned into a public square where people could jog or enjoy a stroll.
The project would include a multi-million rinngit sports complex with futsal and badminton courts, field for tai chi, yoga and aerobic activities, a children’s playground and kiosks selling various wares.
The stadium is a prominent landmark as it is located in the centre of Kajang town.
Its main entrance faces Jalan Kelab while the back portion looks out to Jalan Cheras leading to the bustling Jalan Besar.
In its heyday, many important football league and club matches, involving legendary football players like Mokhtar Dahari and M. Chandran were played at the stadium to capacity crowds.
Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) president Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abd Rahman will launch the ground-breaking event for the new project.
The Kajang Square idea was first mooted in 2000 when the council announced that it had regeneration plans for the stadium, alongside suggestions for a riverine park, satay food court and satay museum as a tourist attraction.
After five years, it was proposed that the underused stadium be turned into a public square where people could jog or enjoy a stroll.
When the Kajang Square was first proposed, there were critics who felt that the project was a grandiose scheme and suggested that the 2.52ha land be converted into a parking area as there was a need for such a facility due to the rapid development in the town.
Kajang assemblyman Lee Kim Sin had said the Bangi sports complex was centrally located and well-equipped with facilities, hence there was no need for a similar facility in Kajang.

KUALA LUMPUR: English Premier League champions Chelsea had listed Malaysia in their Asia Tour 2011 itinerary and also for pre-season training, it was announced yesterday.
Disclosing the plan in a media briefing on Chelsea’s Asia Tour 2011 here yesterday, Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said the club was planning to be in Malaysia for a week for a training stint prior to a friendly match in Kuala Lumpur.
“As a centre for pre-season training as well, our manager Carlo Ancelotti will require first-class facilities and we know Malaysia will provide that too,” he said.
Gourlay said Chelsea were confident of Malaysians’ interest in the club and were looking forward to getting closer to their fans in the country.
“A huge crowd came to our game during our last Asia Tour two years ago and with next summer’s match taking place in the 85,000 capacity National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, this is the chance for many fans here to came watch us again,” he said.
During the 2008 Asia Tour, Chelsea played a pre-season friendly against Malaysia in front of 55,000 fans at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil and won it 2-0, with the goals scored by Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole.
ProEvents International, a leading football marketing and management consultancy in Asia, has once again been appointed as the sole and exclusive tour promoter for the Chelsea Asia Tour 2011.
ProEvents International chief executive officer Julian Kam said a comprehensive programme would be drawn up to welcome Chelsea to Kuala Lumpur, together with match details relating to ticket pricing, venue and timing.
“We will announce them in the near future,” he said.

Muhyiddin announces allocation, MSSM can reinstate 11 excluded sports
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4039/4339731197_d50cc8c76b_o.jpg
— Bernama

Well laid out: An artist’s impression of the Kajang Square.
A KAJANG Square, estimated to cost RM5.5mil, will be built in place of the Kajang Stadium.
According to Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) landscape department director Nor Azman Abd Rahim, the Kajang Stadium is being demolished to make way for a centre where people can gather.
“Previously, it was only used for football matches, now we want to open it to the public.
“It will be a multi-purpose location with facilities for jogging, cycling and other activities,” he said, Nor Azman said the place will be developed in three phases.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2010/9/2/central/stadium.jpg
Work in progress: Part of the walls of
the Kajang Stadium have been demolished.
“Under the first phase, a playground will be built at a cost of RM200,000. In fact, this is almost completed.
“The second phase will include the building of two futsal courts.
“Part of the walls will be torn down but the field will remain. There will be a bitumen track instead of synthetic rubber, which will incur more cost,” he said.
The Kajang Square will also have kiosks and a stage.
Nor Azman added that the whole project would take about three years to complete.
“The main issue is funds. We have applied for allocations from the state and the Youth and Sports Ministry,” he said.

nazrey February 7th, 2011, 01:50 PM Sarawak Stadium to undergo renovation work
By KERNI PUAH Monday February 7, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/2/7/sarawak/8011125&sec=sarawak
SARAWAK Stadium in Petra Jaya, near Kuching is being upgraded in preparation for the Malaysia Games.
Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Datuk Seri William Mawan, who is also in charge of sports, assured that work would be completed within the stipulated time frame.
He said the floodlights, which did not meet the standard set by Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), would also be upgraded.
Mawan said the stadium, built to host one group of the 1997 Under-20 World Youth Cup, would be equipped with top-class facilities for the benefit of athletes.
Stadium Sarawak hosted Group B games involving Brazil, France, South Africa and South Korea. It was also the venue for the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals.
He said some of the outdated and faulty facilities and equipment needed to be repaired and replaced.
“As such, the stadium will be closed to all sporting events including the Premier League until work is completed within this year.”
Mawan also congratulated the Sarawak Premier League side for their winning start to the campaign by beating Penang 4-0 in the away match at Stadium Batu Kawan on Jan 31.
The minister hoped coach Mohamad Zaki Shaikh Ahmad and his charges would continue to chalk up more wins.
Meanwhile, Football Association of Sarawak deputy president Abu Bakar Marzuki hoped supporters would be patient as the upgrading of the stadium would take one or two months.
“Matches will be played at 4.15pm (because of renovation) and ticket prices are still at RM7 for the open terrace seating.”
Sarawak play their first home game - their second in the league - at Sarawak Stadium on Feb 11, hosting Harimau Muda B, before taking on Negeri Stadium on Feb 14.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 (Bernama) - World renown English Premier League (EPL) clubs Liverpool and Chelsea are expected to play friendly matches against the national squad during their Far East Asian Tour in July.
Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) secretary-general Azzuddin Ahmad said FAM had received the green light from both clubs while the dates for both matches would be announced soon.
"There is also a big possibility that another EPL club will be coming here for a friendly match against the national team. That prospect is still in the discussion stage," he told reporters here Tuesday.
Azzuddin said the dates for the matches between Liverpool and Chelsea would only be three to four days apart and both matches would be played at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
"We have ha discussions with the National Sports Complex and the management are receptive of the idea," he said.
Though Chelsea has been here a number of times, Liverpool's visit to Malaysia will be the first, since the last planned match against Selangor in 2008 was cancelled. (Bernama)

Muhyiddin announces allocation, MSSM can reinstate 11 excluded sports

— Bernama

PISA to undergo a makeover, says Abdul Malik
By SIMREN KAUR Wednesday July 6, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/7/6/north/9034937&sec=North
The Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) will soon be given a makeover, said state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Com-mittee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim.
PISA’s new look, he said, and the upcoming Penang International Convention and Exhibition Centre would be a boost to state’s reputation as a fast moving industrial and trade location.
He, however, declined to reveal the details and the cost of the makeover.
Abdul Malik, who was speaking to reporters after announcing the Gifts and Premium Fair to be held at PISA in November, said the fair was touted to be the first and biggest of its kind in the northern region.
“The fair will showcase a variety of corporate gifts and souvenirs such as pens, umbrellas, key chains, flasks and T-shirts.
“This fair is another feather in Penang’s cap because it shows that the state had succeeded in overcoming the economic downturn of 2008,” he said.
Abdul Malik said he was inspired to organise such a fair after a recent visit to a similar fair Hong Kong as there was a big potential market for such items in Penang.
He said: “Nowadays, everyone from small corporations to organisers of events such as conferences hand out gifts. Guests to Malay weddings are not only given the traditional ‘bunga melor’ but all sorts of gifts in a goodie bag.”
The fair aims to offer an opportunity for corporate clients such as factories, the various government departments and education sectors to buy direct from manufacturers who will also get the chance to share ideas and develop new business opportunities with their contemporaries.
The three-day Gifts and Pre-mium Fair will be held at PISA Concourse area from Nov 10.
The first two days will only be for traders while the last day will be open to the public from 10am to 7pm.

KOTA KINABALU: The Youth and Sports Ministry has channelled funds worth RM14 million for the First Term of the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).
Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the allocation was to allow the completion of sporting infrastructure during the Ninth Malaysia Plan which ended last year.
“Among the projects that were financed using this allocation is the construction of the Libaran Community Sports Complex in Sandakan and the implementation of various development activities in the state.
“However, the Youth Council allocations for Sabah and Sarawak have been temporarily halted as they have yet to be appropriated with the Sports Act,” said Shabery at a press conference here yesterday.
He said his ministry would devise a way so that the same allocation would be channelled not only to the state Youth Councils but also to the District Youth Councils.
“I have also suggested that this allocation cannot be compared to that of smaller states like Perlis. By nature of its size, Sabah most certainly requires a much bigger allocation,” said Shabery.
He added the Youth and Sports Ministry had also declared this year as a Sports Industry Year, where various changes were made at central level such as the amendments of laws in the Malaysian Stadium Corporation, National Sports Institute, National Sports Council and the Sports Commission.
“These amendments are necessary to create a module to control the nation’s sports in efforts to make sports as a contributor to the country’s revenue.
“These are among the preparations that were made at the central level, to which Sabah and Sarawak must adapt in order for the modules to have the desired impact,” said Shabery.

SIBU: The new Sibu Indoor Stadium would soon be constructed at the old Sibu airport to provide more sports facilities. Speaking to the press at Tun Zaidi Stadium yesterday, Second Minister of Finance Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the RM25 million project had been approved by the state government and construction work would begin soon.
Wong, who is also Minister of Environment and Public Health, said the project was under the approved master plan for the redevelopment of the old airport site.
“Half of the redevelopment project is designated for sporting facilities and IT library.
“The remaining half being earmarked for mixed use educational, commercial and residential development,” he said.
He also said the new stadium would have a large seating capacity for spectators.
“The implementation of this project is to construct an integrated sports centre on the 16-acre land.
“It will comprise an indoor stadium with a seating capacity of 4,068, three-lane indoor running track, concourse, changing rooms, offices and security control, function hall lounges, spa and gym and grand foyer,” he said.
Meanwhile, the RM4 million upgrading works to Tun Zaidi Stadium are now completed. Wong said the project, which started last August, was completed at the end of March. The project scope included demolition works to the existing running track, construction of RC platform for running track, supply and installation of synthetic material to the running track, long and triple jump track and remedial works to D area and steeplechase water jump area.
The project coordinator, Sunny Eu from Pembinaan Uta-Jaya Sdn Bhd, said the newly renovated stadium was based on an internationally approved system.
“Bukit Jalil Stadium and six running tracks for Commonwealth Games in India are also using the same system,” he said.
Also present were honorary president of Sibu Amateur Athletic Association (SAAA) Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming, SAAA president Dr Gregory Hii, chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Datuk Tiong Thai King and Sibu divisional engineer Vincent Tang.

Kelantan Government To Build Own Stadium
March 12, 2012 16:55 PM
http://www.bernama.com/bernama/state_news/news.php?id=651623&cat=et
KOTA BAHARU, March 12 (Bernama) -- The PAS-led Kelantan government will go ahead on its proposal to build a new stadium although the Kelantan Football Association (Kafa) has planned a RM300 million stadium in Bandar Baharu Tunjong here.
State Human Development, Youth, Sports and NGOs Committee chairman, Datuk Abdul Fatah Mahmood said the decision by Kafa did not affect the original proposal by the state to build its own stadium.
"The more stadiums the better for the government's efforts to develop football in the state," he told reporters here, Monday.
Previously, Chairman of Kelantan economic planning, finance and welfare committee, Datuk Husam Musa had announced that the state government would build its own stadium through the privatisation of an integrated project in Bukit Merbau, Pasir Puteh.
