Malaysia would becoming a DEVELOPED COUNTRY IN THE YEAR 2020. Her Capital, Kuala Lumpur (KL) is ready to host any kind of WORLD CLASS EVENTS since KL 1998 but the question is: WOULD KL BID AND WIN THE SUMMER OLYMPICS 2020?!

And do you think it might going to be PUTRAJAYA 2020 INSTEAD OF KUALA LUMPUR 2020?! We cant just hope on ONE SINGLE CITY! Take the UK as example (The size of the UK is almost same as Malaysia), They do not count on LONDON only. They have other cities like MANCHESTER and GLASGOW and CARDIFF and BELFAST. Other countries that are almost same size as Malaysia - Italy : ROMA, MILAN, NAPLES and PALERMO. Korea : SEOUL and BUSAN and JAPAN : TOKYO, OSAKA, SAPPORO, NAGOYA, FUKUOKA (JAPAN has almost same size as MALAYSIA but has so many cities and thats just half of them).

So, can we just count on KL only? or to add another city, PUTRAJAYA?!

That would be awesome, I love KL - I'd definitely come over for the Olympics.

Some of the infrastructure and development going on in KL is absolutely amazing. On a personal note I find the place so much more full of grunt that Singapore and inherently more exciting. It would be a big boost for Malaysia and KL itself.

I believe that KL would be already now ready to host Olympic Games.
To avoid the extreme heat and humidity you can do disciplines such as the Marathon in Cameron Highlands or Genting where it's significantly cooler.

As much as I would like to see Olympics in Cape Town, let's not forget that SA is organizing the Football World Cup already and 2nd, maybe SA needs it's financial resources to tackle other more important issues than to organize a multi billion $ event. Also Argentine, who has truckloads of debts to the world bank and who's economy collapsed just a couple of years ago. ;)

It would be kinda remote for Putrajaya to host the Olympics given the availability of land there (it is actually kinda small). The possibility of other cities in Malaysia such as George Town (Penang), Melaka, Johor Bahru and Kot Kinabalu is much higher then KL itself. But of course KL had the best chance since the infrastructure are all already in place ;)

Since Malaysia is quite a small country (population-wise), it would only be viable for KL to host and not any other cities as others are kinda smallish. Furthermore KL had hosted many international events notably the Commonwealth Games and this had made KL a possible candidate :)

I couldn't agree more, South Africa has HUGE issues to resolve before they can even think about budgeting for the Olympics. When the SA Government is confronted with questions as to why nothing is being done about the woes in SA, they will always say that there isn't enough money to adress the issues and therefore they shouldn't even bother bidding for the Olympics. They must put their money where their mouths are and sort out the real issues in South Africa.

How about Thai+Malaysia+Singapore co-host?

IM not sure if this is possible, logisitcally it culd produce an enormous amount of problems, what legislation is in place, will spectators be able to cross borders without long delays, and in terms of secutiry it could be a nightmare, KL on its own should be adequate, KL's weakness in its previous attempted bid was its lack of detail offered regarding the upgrading of venues to olympic standard, ill try and post what the IOC said..

Mo Rush
June 1st, 2005, 02:23 AM
KUALA LUMPUR
The sports facilities in the city will be located at four main sites, with the majority of sports
less than 30km from the Olympic Village.
Concern was raised over the fact that four sports would be located 60km from the Village,
two sports 80km from the Village and the shooting venue one hour away by plane.
The application states that 91% of facilities required for the Games exist. The majority
were used for the 1998 Commonwealth Games and are considered to be of a good
standard. However, it must be noted that an analysis of Olympic requirements does not
appear to have been carried out. The additional facilities required will only be built if Kuala
Lumpur is awarded the Olympic Games.
Concern regarding the overall sports concept and the location of some of the sports
venues for the Olympic Games in relation to the Olympic Village, is reflected in the low
rating.

Quality Sport concept Feasibility Facilities Percentage
min max min max min max
Existing 91% 7 8 3 5 0.6 0.7
Planned - - - - - - -
Additional 9% 10 10 3 5 0.7 0.8

The Olympic Village is not ideally located as several venues such as volleyball, rowing and
cycling are some distance away. In addition, air travel would be required between the
Olympic Village and the shooting venue. No details are provided as to alternative
accommodation for these outlying sports.
The Government has provided assurances regarding the financing and construction of the
Village.
Accommodation capacity for 20,000 athletes and officials will easily meet IOC
requirements and post-Olympic use is as University campus housing.

The total number of proposed rooms is insufficient, even though the first group hotel room
capacity is appropriate. Despite the low number of second group hotel rooms, Kuala
Lumpur does not plan to build a Media Village.

The transport concept is not clear. The proposed Olympic Games structure is focused on
a medium size Olympic cluster with 8 sports, the Olympic Stadium, the MPC/IBC and the
media village, i.e. less than half of all Olympic activity. A second, minor cluster, the
“University Sports Centre”, encompasses 3 sports and the Olympic Village. Other Olympic
activities are scattered on a wide perimeter resulting in an average Olympic Village to
venue distance of 30 km.
Distances between Kuala Lumpur gateway airport and the main Olympic venues are also
high (average 67 km).
A new airport was opened in 1998 and has sufficient capacity for substantial traffic growth.
An airport to city rail link will be completed by 2002.

No detailed financial / revenue plan is provided. The expectation of achieving the same
financial proportions as Sydney between International and local programmes would seem
overly optimistic, and potentially push ticket and local marketing targets to unachievable
levels.

I just think if South Africa can put together all of the funding to put on a good games, we should give Africa a chance at hosting a major sports event. If it doesn't work out, the Olympics will not be back for a long time. As far as KL, Bejing, China is hosting the Olympics in 2008 making 2020 too close to hold the games in Asia in less than 12 years.

Here are my list of Cities I think would make the best Olympic host (after my home town of Chicago of course. San Fran would also be a GREAT setting for an American Olympics).......

1. Rio de Janeiro - The best setting fo an Olympics anywhere. Plus Brasil is a great sporting county (and a big country) which is attrative to the Olympic Comm. Crime and infrastructure would be negatives though.

2. Cape Town - An African and South American city have to get them some tiem. Cape Town is easily the best choice in terms of any African city. The infrastructure is there. A breathtaking setting. Crime (though not bad for a major South African city) and finances might be a problem.

3. Instanbul - A great setting that would connect east and west. The first Islamic country to host the games and a country with a proud sporting tradition.

4. Bangkok - What IMHO I think of as the capital of southeast asia. A dynamic cosmpolitian city. Would also be a nice setting.

5. Prague - I was thinking of an Eastern European city and it is a tough choice. Budapest or Warsaw also wouldn't be a bad choices. When I think of what is best about Eastern Europe thuogh I tend to think of Prague as the ultimate. The Czech Rep. might be a bit too small to pull of any Olympics though.

6. Buenos Aires - Would probably be the best alternative to Rio for a South American city IMO. A nice looking city with not as much as the crime or infrastructure problems as Rio and some South American cities.

7. Dubai - A growing dynamic city that would probably love to host the games. Would expose the world to a very differant type of enviroment then other games have shown. There might be political considerations to consider and also much of the middle east has not been known as a hot bed for sports in the past.

8. Singapore - A very clean disciplined city that I am sure could pull it off. Has many things to offer but again size is a consideration..

Why not. The infrastructure from the Commonwealth Games is still shiny and new. The plan (Vision 20/20) is to become developed, but didn't the Asian financial crisis throw a big wrench in this plan? Either way, it would be nice to have South or Southeast Asia get an Olympic Games soon (Singapore maybe?).

^^ You are very much right, the financial crisis has thrown a wrench into the plans for Malaysia. We (Malaysia) are not going to reach that target of a developed country by 2020. Most of my fellow Malaysians are still in a delusion and ignorance, proudly boasting that the target will still be achieved now like as if its a matter of fact, without taking into account the economic figures and the realities!

The plan to turn Malaysia into a developed country was started by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1991. He envisioned economic output in 2020 to be eight times what it was in 1990, and for the average Malaysian to be four times richer. It is a numerical GDP target of an economy valued at RM920 billion in 2020 (in 1990 ringgit value).

But here is the catch: Under the plan, the country's economic growth must surpass 7 per cent every year. The financial crisis, created a recession and post crisis, it has not been able to reached that consistent target of 7% year on year growth ever since, so that analogy you made about a wrench into the plans, is actually quite correct.

Gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 5.3 per cent last year and is projected to grow by 6 per cent this year. This is a shadow of the average 7 to 9 per cent annual growth of the early 1990s.

Prime Minister Abdullah has reported that the country generated an average GDP growth of 6.2 per cent per annum from 1991 to 2005 and the (his) target for average real GDP growth in the next five years 2006-2010 under the current administrations 9MP is 6 per cent per annum. Clearly by Prime Minister Badawi's own target for Malaysia, we would not be a developed state by 2020.

He said with the 6% GDP growth already set for 9MP (9th Malaysia plan), or RM351 billion target in 2010, thus the growth for the remaining 10 years from 2011 to 2020 has to be at about 10.2 percent!!!! The target of 10.2% for 2011-2020 is clearly impossible as the National Mission had set a growth rate of only 6.5% for this period. Even this 6.5% growth rate is doubtful as Malaysia is expected to be an oil importer from 2011-2020! 10.2% means growth rate has got to be the fastest in the world, faster than China and has to be consistent for a decade! Even in the roaring 90's, Malaysia hasn't achieved such a feat!

One known doubter is actually Tun Mahathir himself, who has said he has a niggling worry that the goal cannot be achieved.

So be realistic Malaysians, 2020 is a pipe dream of the 90's. It is going to take us longer than that to be developed as per the vision.

Malaysia not being a developed country by 2020 as per the vision aside, it'll be a nice to have the games hosted in Kuala Lumpur. Its a nice city, with an amazing atmosphere, the extension of the metro (LRT, monorail) system with an additional 4 lines should mean transport infrastructure would be quite sufficient by 2020.

The absence of the games from Africa and South America will probably be addressed before in whole or in part before the games return to Asia.
Rio de Janeiro is the logical Canidate for South America, Cape Town is logical for Africa. BA Argentina will not host the games for 50 years sorry to say MO because of their recent financial problems that burnt many a international bank.
No international corporation would trust sponsoring a summer games in BA for a while because so many of their Argentinian branches were burnt by the Colapse.

South east Asia for a while if Rio was to pull off winning the bid for 2016 because it is likely to go to North America after that and then back to Europe or Africa.
Africa has a strong case and Jacques Rogge has stated that he wants to see the games go to a country of Muslim faith, a South American country and an African country.

Qatar,Dubai,Nigeria,Malaysia can all fit the Muslim part.

Rio Brazil is the only real option for south america with santiago chile a further possible summer games city for south america.

Cape Town , Johan, Durban, Cairo, maybe even ABuja or the capital of Kenya.
there are interesting dynamics to who would be the first african host and when .

can kuala lumpur win bid 2020?
from wiki: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Malaysia expects to be considered a developed nation by the year 2020, as expressed in Wawasan 2020. There is slight expectation from the public for the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur to host the Summer Olympics to mark Wawasan 2020.[13] Kuala Lumpur had decided to bid for the 2008 Games but it did not succeed in becoming a candidate on the shortlist,[14] nor did it make the shortlist in its bid for the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics.

The previous stadium proposals are mediocre. I prefer the Bukit Jalil Stadium as the main stadium for a Kuala Lumpur Olympics.

Sepang International Circuit, Selangor
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Location : Sepang, Selangor, Malaysia
Time zone : GMT +8
Major Events : Formula One, MotoGP, A1GP, SuperGT
Circuit Length : 5.543 km (3.44 mi)
Turns : 15
Lap Record : 1:34.223 (Juan Pablo Montoya, Williams-BMW, 2004)

http://www.maleisie.be/images/wallpapers/sepang_circuit_02.jpg

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is the venue used for the Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix, A1 Grand Prix as well as the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix. It is also used as a venue for many other major motorsport events.

Widely regarded as a benchmark for other Grand Prix venues, the Sepang circuit boasts superb pit garage and media facilities, as well as impressive grandstands and patron amenities. Some complaints have been raised regarding the unevenness of the surface, as the track appears to be slowly sinking. This is possibly due to the fact that Sepang was built on the site of a former swamp.

The circuit was designed by renowned German designer Hermann Tilke, who would subsequently design the impressive new facilities in Shanghai, Bahrain and Turkey.

The main circuit, normally raced in a clockwise direction, is 5.54 kilometres long, and is noted for its sweeping corners and wide straights.[1] The layout is quite unusual, with a very long back straight separated from the pit straight by just one very tight hairpin.

Other configurations of the Sepang circuit can also be used. The north circuit is also raced in a clockwise direction. It is basically the first half of the main circuit. The course turns back towards the pit straight after turn 6 and is 2.71 kilometres long in total.

The south circuit is the other half of the racecourse. The back straight of the main circuit becomes the pit straight when the south circuit is in use, and joins onto turn 8 of the main circuit to form a hairpin turn. Also run clockwise, this circuit is 2.61 km in length.

Sepang International Circuit also features kart racing and motocross facilities.

Merdeka Stadium
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stadium Merdeka (Independence Stadium) is a sports stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was initially erected for Malaysia's declaration of independence on August 31, 1957. The stadium, operated by Perbadanan Stadium Merdeka, was a venue for many major sporting events prior to its handover to the private company, such as the 1977 Southeast Asia Games and the annual Merdeka Football Tournament (Pesta Bola Merdeka). It was also used as the venue for concerts, which included such international acts as Michael Jackson, Kool and the Gang, Mariah Carey, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance and Celine Dion. It also hosted the fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Bugner on 1 July 1975.

History

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/46/History_merdeka.jpg

Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj announced
Malaya's independence from the British in 1957.

Stadium Merdeka was the site of one of Malaysia's most historically significant events. On 31 August, 1957, power was transferred from the British Empire to the newly independent Malayan government.a Tens of thousands of people crowded into the stadium, which was built specifically for this occasion. While the stadium is an important part of Malaysia's history, it was almost demolished in the late 1990s. The stadium and its land were given to a private company which had intended to redevelop the land into a RM1 billion entertainment and office complex.[1] In exchange, the company was required to build seven other stadia in other locations. However, the company did not proceed with the redevelopment due to public outcry and the company's financial difficulties due to the late-1990's Asian economic crisis. In February 2003, Stadium Merdeka was named a national heritage building.

In 2007, Merdeka Stadium underwent restoration to its original 1957 condition. The 45,000-capacity stadium has been reduced to 20,000, which meant that several of the upper terrace blocks built over the years had to be demolished. The renovations are part of Malaysia’s 50th anniversary plans to relive the moment when Tunku Abdul Rahman proclaimed independence there. On 31 August 2007, it hosted the Perayaan Raksasa Merdeka.

Renovations aim to restore Merdeka Stadium to what it was in 1957.

The stadium is undergoing massive renovations at a cost of RM2million and will sport the 1957 look. PNB have undertaken the task to restore, preserve and conserve the stadium where independence was proclaimed by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the country first prime minister.

PNB chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid said the organisers of the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup had requested for the use of the stadium to host this year’s competition.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/6/8/central/02paint.jpg

No simple task: Even the paintwork is being tailored to match the original.

“They also want to celebrate the country’s 50th Merdeka anniversary by having the competition at the historic Merdeka Stadium. We are pleased to give them the honour,” said Ahmad Sarji.

Merdeka Stadium was also the venue where Malaysia was proclaimed in 1963. It was also the venue for many sporting events including the Merdeka Tournament, the 1975 World Cup hockey final and the 1989 SEA Games.

Ahmad Sarji said PNB had acquired Merdeka Stadium, Stadium Negara and the surrounding area for residential and commercial buildings.

“But we were flooded with enquiries from the public. The interest from all quarters was a big surprise. The 1957 independence proclamation is a subject of interest to many. PNB wants to preserve both the Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara as heritage buildings.

“Secondly, both Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara were venues for many historical sporting and cultural events,” said Ahmad Sarji.

Work on the restructuring of the Merdeka Stadium was initiated after Kuala Lumpur City Hall approved the development plans. The Merdeka Heritage Trust Foundation, headed by Ahmad Sarji himself, will be responsible for the restoration project.

Ahmad Sarji said they were lucky as they managed to get the original plans and drawings of Merdeka Stadium, which was built in 1956.

The then Public Works Department deputy director Stanley Edwards Jewkes headed the Merdeka Stadium project. Jewkes was not an architect but a civil engineer but the Englishman was personally asked by the Tunku to design the stadium.

Ahmad Sarji said they were able to get in touch with Jewkes, who was helpful in many ways.

“Jewkes provided us with a lot of photographs and details pertaining to the original stadium. We also had the original drawings of the stadium,” said Ahmad Sarji.

As per the original stadium, the track would be removed, the podium where the Tunku proclaimed “Merdeka” seven times will be restored at the exact spot.

“The actual seating arrangements for the Rulers, the Queen’s representative and other officials would be restored. We are taking all steps to have the paintwork similar to that in 1957. We also have found a time capsule but there was nothing magical in it.

“The grand stand will be similar to that in 1957. We have also demolished all other structures like the seating area opposite the grand stand and both sides. However, the stadium will be subject to a stress test to determine that it will be safe.

“Another reason why we are restoring the original venue was to rekindle loyalty and patriotism in the heart of the younger generation. The younger generation will have the opportunity to enjoy the Aug 31, 1957 atmosphere.

“The youngsters must value and appreciate Merdeka Stadium. Historical buildings are easy to destroy but difficult to preserve.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/6/8/central/02vistand.jpg

Clear view: Victoria Institution can now be
seen from within the stadium grounds.

“Merdeka Stadium has a soul and it must not be destroyed or forgotten,” said Ahmad Sarji.

However, Ahmad Sarji admitted that it would be difficult to restore Merdeka Stadium fully.

“It will not be easy for us to get the PA System used in 1957. In the process of restoration, some features like the kiosks were destroyed but we can build it. The main pavilion, two VIP rooms and changing rooms will be back to their original state,” said Ahmad Sarji.

The Merdeka Stadium will be handed over the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry in mid-July. The contractors are working round the clock to ensure that work is completed by then.

Title : Bon Odori Festival 2008
Venue : Panasonic Sports Complex (formerly Matsushita Centre)
Lot 4, Persiaran Perkilangan, Seksyen 21
Shah Alam,Selangor
Date & Time : Sat 12 Jul 2008 (7pm onwards)
Synopsis : The Bon Festival is a Japanese Buddhist custom which is held annually to honour the deceased spirits of one's ancestors. It is meant to be a joyful celebration, bringing families together, and celebrating rather than mourning the lives of the dearly departed.

The Bon Odori Festival has been a fixture here in Malaysia for the last 30 odd years, and is more a festival of Japanese culture, with Japanese dances - including the traditional Bon Odori, danced specially for this occassion - music, food and lots more, presented throughout the evening.

Bon Odori 2008 - Panasonic Sports Complex - Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia
Bon Odori has become a popular event in Malaysia and it is the 32nd Bon Odori (12th July 2008) at Panasonic Sports Complex this year. Besides the Bon Odori at Panasonic Sports centre, Shah Alam, Bon Odori is now available in Penang, Cameron Highlands and Johor.

I did join the Bon Odori at Matsushita Sports Centre in 2003 & Bon Odori at Fort Cornwallis, Penang in 2004 (if I'm not mistaken). To me, Shah Alam's Bon Odori is a greater event and it is the palce where you can feel a better Bon Odori.

Japanese firm donates sports centre as 50th Merdeka gift to government
Thursday May 1, 2008, By Y.P. SIVAM, TheStar

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/5/1/central/m_04jog.jpg

Modern: The 400m synthetic running track at the Panasonic Sports Centre.

THE Panasonic Sports Centre (PSC) in Shah Alam, considered as one of the well maintained and managed sports complex in the country, will be donated to the Sports Ministry.

The Matsushita Group of Companies in Malaysia are the partners of the sports centre, built at a cost of RM34mil in 1991. It was established with the objective of providing sports and recreational facilities for employees.

However last year, the Matsushita Group, based in Japan, as a goodwill gesture, in conjunction with the 50th Merdeka celebrations, decided to hand over the sports centre to the Malaysian government.

A group of high-ranking officials from the Matsushita Group in Japan met the then Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said to seek her opinion.

A PSC officer said the minister was receptive to the proposal and instructed officials from the ministry and National Sports Council (NSC) to pursue the matter.

“We have had a series of discussions and officials from the sports ministry and NSC had visited the PSC. Officials from the Merdeka Stadium board, who manage the sports venues at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, had also visited the PSC,'' said the official.

The officials, from the Merdeka Stadium board, were impressed with the management of the PSC and had expressed their wish to make the PSC a profitable venture. However, the officials from NSC were keen to make the PSC a centre of excellence for sepak takraw and gymnastics. The NSC had voiced out their vision to built a dormitory.

The PSC, houses two football fields, 400m synthetic running track, three tennis courts, three sepak takraw courts, an Olympic size swimming pool, a children's pool and has a seating gallery for 1,100 people. Floodlights have also been installed for night football matches.

The indoor arena can be used for badminton, volleyball, basketball, futsal and table tennis. The indoor arena also has 998 fixed-seats and 2,016 sliding seats. The indoor arena has also been booked for weddings and entertainment shows.

The PSC is well patronised by schools in the Klang Valley. They find the PSC well maintained and also affordable compared to other stadiums in the Klang Valley. Dolphin Sports conduct swimming lessons at the PSC.

The Bon Odori festival is one of most popular events held at the PSC and attracts about 30,000 participants every year. Panasonic Group of Companies in Malaysia also organise their annual sports carnival, involving about 10,000 employees, at the PSC.

Klang Valley teams involved in the M-League had listed the PSC as the home venue.

Former Navy officer T. Kanniappan is currently the manager of the PSC. He has a staff of 12. It is learnt that the 13 staff will be offered VSS. The Merdeka Stadium board are keen to re-employ the staff.

However, the Matsushita Group of Companies have set certain conditions to the Sports Ministry.

“There should not be any structural change made and also employees of Panasonic Group of Companies must be given the privilege to use the facilities,'' said the official.

The delegation from the Panasonic Group of Companies, who had discussions with the Sports Ministry and NSC, has been dissolved.

The Sports Minister is expected to make an official announcement on the takeover soon.

Stadium Negara
Stadium Negara is a stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was the first indoor stadium in the country. Construction began in 1961 and the stadium officially opened in July 1963 by third Yang di-Pertuan Agong Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra of Perlis.

The second of a pair of stadium in a complex in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. This is the covered brother of Stadium Merdeka. The dome you see today isn't the original roof. It was covered by a flat roof with supports radiating from a central hub. Today's dome was built in the 1980's and provides more space and better acoustics for the many musical concerts held here each year.

Is there any football-specific staium in Malaysia which has no running tracks around the pith?

^^ I would like to ask the same.

Actually some imporvments are very impressive.

Didn't know Malaysia has so many high quality stadiums. I only knew the 100k one.

I'd also like to know if there are any decent football-specific stadia in the country.

Unfortunately there is none for football/soccer specific stadium in this country. Although Malaysia is home for football crazy fans, they aren't crazy enough for local football scene, mostly avid fans of EPL, Champs League among others plus there aren't enough turn-up for local football games. For every stadiums at each state shown here, they come with tracks. Beside football they are used for states level athletic games. Economically not viable to produce such football specific stadium. At least not for now.:)

Sepak takraw
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sepak takraw or kick volleyball is a sport native to Southeast Asia, resembling volleyball, except that it uses a rattan ball and only allows players to use their feet, knee, chest and head to touch the ball. It is a popular sport in Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines and Indonesia.

Similar games include footbag net, footvolley, Bossaball, jianzi and sipa.

The sport had already become popular in Malaysia and Thailand by the early 1400s. Back then it was called takraw in Thai or sepak raga (literally "kick rattan ball", because the ball is made of rattan) in Malay and played mainly by men and boys standing in a circle, kicking the ball back and forth between them.

Rules and regulations

Measurements of court and equipment often vary among tournaments and organizations that operate from a recreational to a competitive level; international competitive rules and regulation are used in this section.

The Selangor Turf Club traces its beginnings to the efforts of a group of amateur racing enthusiasts, mainly British officers in the late 1800’s, to establish a venue for their recreational activities.

http://img33.picoodle.com/img/img33/3/10/3/f_81125404m_df812c5.jpg

By then, Kuala Lumpur had become the capital of the state of Selangor, during which time was founded the Selangor Turf Club.

Race meetings were by far among the most popular and cosmopolitan attractions of the time. In 1896, the Selangor Turf Club moved to Jalan Ampang (now the famous KLCC Twin Towers), and it was not until 1992 that it relocated to a brand new state-of-the-art racecourse in Sungei Besi.

The new Turf Club is now equipped with upscale racing facilities and can accommodate up to 25,000 racing fans.

The racetrack is 2,000-metre long and 30-metre wide, left-handed and is turfed with patented grass-El-Toro Zoysia. Its greatest asset is the double home bends with the unique gradients which help to reduce significantly the centrifugal force acting on the horses and allow for exciting finishes when the horses come through the home bend to the finishing line.

]Proposal for Penang govt to buy Turf Club land
By Marina Emmanuel Published: 2008/09/15 BusinessTimes

THE Penang government stands to make a profit of some RM176 million if it goes with a proposal presented by a citizens' group on the island to buy the land belonging to the Penang Turf Club (PNTC).

The Anti-Penang Global City Centre group, which is made of heritage, consumer and environment activists, yesterday said the government can pay for the land, which it estimated will cost RM500 million, by selling part of the 104ha PNTC land for high-end housing.

The proposal, which was presented during a public forum in George Town, is meant to serve as an alternative to the controversial PGCC project which was unveiled last year by Equine Capital Bhd's associate company Abad Naluri Sdn Bhd.

Earlier this month, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the proposal from Abad Naluri had been rejected by the Penang Island Municipal Council due to failure by the developer to submit planning plans as required by the state.

Since then Equine Capital, which holds a 25 per cent stake in Abad Naluri, has announced to Bursa Malaysia that is in the process of making an appeal to the Penang Island Municipal Council.

Repeated efforts by the Business Times to reach Equine's chairman Datuk Patrick Lim have been unsuccessful.

The Anti-PGCC Group is made up of bodies which include the Penang Heritage Trust, Consumers Association of Penang, Suaram and several residents' associations.

The group's proposal includes the implementation of social housing on the Turf Club land, along with a cultural and performing arts centre and other public amenities.

"The PNTC had agreed to hand over the club land on Penang Island for a new club at Batu Kawan on mainland Penang worth RM488 million," the group's representative Loh-Lim Lin Lee said.

"It is proposed that in order to attain a fair and win-win situation for all, the state government acquire the Turf Club for the same sum and the club uses those funds to build a new turf club elsewhere," she added.

After paying the PNTC RM500 million for the land, the group is suggesting that the state government sell between 28ha and 36ha of bungalow lots at RM250 per sq ft, and make a profit of RM735,092,000.

An allocation has also been made to spend RM25 million on 300 units of low-cost housing units and RM40 million to establish a people's park with facilities.

40-year-old stadium to make way for development
Saturday October 18, 2008 By R.S.N. MURALI TheStar

KUALA TERENGGANU: The four decade old Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah stadium in Kuala Terengganu was once a prominent structure here.

However, now with rapid development in Kuala Terengganu, the stadium has to make way for a new development project that’s meant to uplift the status of the state capital. The stadium hosted a myriad of football championships in mid 60s while national and state event were also held in the past.

It has capacity to house 25,000 spectators and served as a relief centre during monsoon seasons until the late 80s.

The redevelopment exercise of the city €“ embarked by the local authority - would see the demolition of the sports facility to make way for a recreational hub and multi-storey car park dubbed as “Dataran Kuala Terengganu”.

Kuala Terengganu City Council’s mayor Datuk Mat Razali Kassim said that the plan to develop the stadium was decided sometime ago with the opening of the new sport complex at Gong Badak replacing the stadium early this year.

“We are in the midst of outlining the proposal for the development of this area,” he said.

The concept he said would be the same as Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur where all the facilities would be made available to the public.

He said the planned multi storey car park could accommodate a volume of 2,000 vehicles, thus reducing the woes of car park shortages faced by locals, presently.

“We are also looking into relocating and providing alternative area for 14 vendors at the stadium before going ahead with our project,” he added.

Sarawak stadium
Kuching, Sarawak

http://www.hijjaskasturi.com/projects/images/sarawak_stadium2/sarawak_stadium2.jpg

Sarawak Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Kuching, Malaysia. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium has a capacity of 40,000 spectators. It was built in 1995 for the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship. The stadium is adjacent to the old stadium, the State Stadium (Stadium Negeri) that was previously used to stage various tournaments and championship.

The stadium is the home of Sarawak FA, a Malaysian Premier League football team.

The stadium was completed on April 1997, and is one of Asia's world-class stadiums. It consists of 4 levels, with an electronic multimedia scoreboard, manila grass football field with patented drainage and synthetic running track. It also has a VIP driveway, 320 parking lots, stadium office, gymnasiums, changing and massage rooms, workshops, canteen, security control centre, dope testing area, medical clinics, saunas and prayer room. It also provides excellent facilities for the disabled and VVIPs.

Since its opening, the stadium has staged various memorable football matches such as the quarter-final between Brazil and Argentina during the FIFA World Youth Championship, the 1998 Charity Shield match between Sarawak FA and Selangor FA as well as the second round of the 1999 Asia Cup Winner's Cup between Sarawak FA and eventual winners, Kashima Antlers of Japan.

Sarawak Stadium is chosen as the fourth venue (Group D) to host matches of Malaysia, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and PSV Eindhoven for the Champions Youth Cup 2007.

Penang Stadium
The Penang State Stadium, or Stadium Negeri Pulau Pinang, is located in Batu Kawan, a new township being developed. It has a capacity of 40,000 spectators, and was completed in 2000, after the Government decided to turn Batu Kawan into the third township in Penang after Bayan Baru and Seberang Jaya.

I explored Batu Kawan on a bright sunny day in May, on the same day that I visited Pulau Aman. There is regular ferry service to Pulau Aman from Batu Kawan.
