Its like a baby Allianz Arena. Looks great and Górnik Zabrze does deserve as it was, historically, one of the best soccer clubs in Poland.

The stadium has recieved all the neccessary decisions including a building permit. Zabrze city council have created a limited company which will be the investor and have reserved 270 million PLN (approx 70 million euros/90 million dollars) for the construction of the stadium. They are now preparing a tender in order to find a general contractor. Assuming that there are no disputes over the result of the tender then construction should start in march/april of 2011. The stadium will be constructed in such a way that Gornik Zabrze will be able to use the stadium throughout construction. First 3 stands will be built and then the main one, similar to how they are doing it in Warsaw so i expect it should take about two and a half years.

Waste of money for a team whose average attendance was only 10,000 last season (and less than 9,000 so far this season). Those glossy pictures are overly optimistic if they think this stadium will be that full, that often.

Is that so? Well, I did some checking and while it is true that the stadium capacity has been recently reduced, for most of the last decade it has been above 17,000. Their combined average attendance in that time has been 6,754 (since 1999-2000). It's gone up a bit lately but certainly not by enough to justify the expense of building a 32,000 seat stadium. 15-20,000 maybe, and build it to be easily expandable if more is needed in the future. As for the agglomeration, it's more like 2 million and Gornik aren't the only team in it. And if they have one of Poland's largest fan bases but can only draw 10-15,000 in a good season, that's not saying much for a country whose population is similar to that of Spain.

On a side note, this is a problem I have with a lot of the new stadiums in Eastern Europe. They're big and expensive but the teams that play in them don't pull in the attendances to fill them. I would include most of the Euro 2012 and World Cup 2018 venues in that category. I've written this before on this and other threads but apparently it bears repeating: building 30-40,000 seat stadiums for a teams whose average attendance is 5-15,000 is a waste of money.

1. No and no they don't. Their attendances figures going back over the last decade and beyond do not support that. It sounds a lot like you hope they could fill a 40-50,000 seat stadium rather than actually expecting them to.

2. Barcelona averaged 78,000 a game last seaon. Espanyol averaged 27,000. Gornik didn't even get half that despite playing in a similarly sized conurbation and havn't done so any time recently (even with a larger stadium than they currently have). If they did, building a 32,000 seat stadium might be worth it.

3. So they can fill 13,000 seats for 1 or 2 seasons. Good for them. How does that automatically mean they can fill a stadium 2.5 times bigger, as you suggest, when nothing in their recent attendance history suggests anything of the sort? Is their season ticket waiting list really that long? I suspect not since I could find nothing that says so.

So Gornik want a new stadium. Judging from what I've seen of their current one, they're right to. But be realistic here. For most of the last decade they were playing in front of 3-6,000 people. Now suddenly they want a stadium that wouldn't look out of place in the Bundesliga or the Premier League! And based on what? A couple of decent seasons attendance-wise.

A better, more financially sound plan would be to build a stadium with, say, 15-18,000 seats. See if the club can fill that on a regular basis over several seasons (as opposed to just a couple) and if they can, then take the roof off and add another deck. The initial cost of the stadium would be less and they'd be in a better position to fund a future enlargement if they needed it. If, on the other hand, their attendances dropped back below 8,000 (as they were up to 2007 and, so far, might be this season as well) then the club wouldn't be lumbered with a stadium that is too big (and all the associated costs that go with it).

Increased capacity + elegant stadium = more people coming for games = more money in club's pocket = hiring new, better players = higher standards in league. So I'm 100% positive about any new stadium in Poland. IMO most stadiums of Ekstraklasa clubs should be nice and modern, and most of stadiums of 1st league too. Construction is yet to start, they only signed the contracts yesterday.

At last! I'm looking forward to seeing the stadium being built and moving this topic into u/c thread.
Maybe Podolski's gonna join Górnik Zabrze earlier than he thought because of the new stadium (?) :lol: :nuts:

And just because our foreign friends may not know this: construction is due to start in less than a week (well, by local time...), on Wednesday 14th at noon! :)

It will remain in its current location and is supposed to also keep its name (Ernest Pohl's). The plan is to build it in 2 phases - first three stands around the main one and later on the main one. Gornik should be able to play there throughout the process, but that is not certain yet, because for the first phase capacity would have to be limited to only some ~3000.

After three years of waiting officially under construction! (time to move the thread, please)

For bigger platforms. Maybe it's a good idea (for football), but the nearest facility for athletes is that in Chorzow. It's a shame because they had the hall and the stadium and now we can have hope to separate another in the future. Time will show all :)

Great design. Kind of reminds me of Axelferis arena, except for the retractable roof. It seems like there will soon hardly be a country in Europe with a better selection of stadiums than Poland.
