Like maybe many 1000's of other world citizens I still can't believe it really happened. I live on the opposite side of the world, had visited NY and the towers in 2000....watched the events of sept 11 2001 unfold on live television....all night till dawn 12th. here in Melbourne. Went back to NY last Sept. and looked at airspace that used to be steel glass........and 1000's of people :( I have bought many books about the WTC and sept. 11....but somehow can't move on ? I have to look at all these pics....not in a gulish or sadist way ? I mourn those lost.....it was a very sullen day in many ways last sept. 11 ...spent most of the day from 7am in pouring rain in Lower Manhattan. I was given a DVD proposing a conspiracy, government plot and coverup. I watched it with an open mind and see some part truths and questions but honestly feel to have set the building up beforehand then had Radical Islamic Terrorists fly planes at the right time is too far fetched to be even a movie plot. Most of you who look at this thread possibly feel much like I do.....an empty sorrow of 'why'....and being interested in engineering and architecture wonder at the journey of events that lead to the total failure of the Towers....That day I was given a USA flag covered in the almost 3000 names of those lost....Just want New Yorkers and Americans in general to know many people across the world still feel your loss. It's hard to write this stuff without it sounding corny....it's just true...that's all.

HECTOP 9/11/01

That morning I took off from my field in Northern NJ to just bum around as usual in a rented Cessna 172SP and was planning to do the VOR approach at FWN and an ILS at MSV to keep my instrument skills in check, when I climbed out to about 2500 and leveled out to stay under Class B airspace floor, I was right about over Lincoln Park airport (N07) when I glanced back at the city and saw the smoke coming out of WTC (it was a VFR and a million morning, so you could really see far out), "damn! wtf?" I thought as I hit the throttle and went direct to Alpine Tower where I joined the Hudson VFR corridor, and tuned in to the self-announcement UNICOM freq 123.05. There was all kinds of talk about a "commuter plane gone into WTC", so I also tuned in to 1010 WINS AM newsradio on the ADF receiver and listened in, they hadn't had a clue either, all they were saying that a plane went into the building. Meanwhile I was just heading down the corridor at all the speed that a fully-shoved C-172 throttle can afford and announcing myself as usual "Spamcan 123, one thousand feet, GWB, southbound", and by the time I made it to about Holland Tunnel I saw a bunch of helicopters around the WTC, smoke billowing out of the #1 tower and the atmosphere of some real big sh*t hitting the fan.

As I'm flying closer, almost opposite the WTC, right next to the Harborside Center in Jersey City, I see this airliner coming down in a steep bank, my first thought was, WTF is this guy doing!??? Why is he diving so steep to take a look at the fire! And it's an airliner! (looked like a 737 to me at the time). I muttered something along the lines "Jeez, this guy is gonna get so fired by his airline, it's not even funny!" The next moment.... it hits the building.... I felt like I was inside a cartoon or a movie, maybe that "Independence Day" flick, at the moment I thought I was seeing things, like this can't be, this isn't real... But I had my camera in hand and snapped virtually a split second later after the impact, I was simply too awestruck when I saw the plane, so it didn't click in me to actually shoot the thing (but if I had a Stinger SAM with me, damn, I wish I did and I would)

Next... I didn't know what to do, but I headed out towards Sandy Hook, called the approach and begged them for flight following, just GET ME OUTTA HERE... they kept me on following until about Colts Neck VOR where they said "unable" and told me I was on my own.... I tried to go back to my field, tuned in the tower... they couldn't hear me, but I could hear that TEB was closed and they were about to get closed and told every aircraft to land.. gave up on the thought of going back to my field and landed at a first field in sight, , where a bunch of other awestruck pilots where trying to get a grasp on what's going on.... After couple of hours it calmed down and airport manager shutdown the place and gave me a lift back to my airport, where I picked up my car... the FBO was closed...

This is so f****ed up, I never felt so helpless, at some point I even feared that people are gonna start shooting at any aircraft flying above them... That's when it dawned on me to just land and deal with the rest of crap later, which I did, I'm here, I'm still sober.

I was serving in the Army in 2001 ( in Greece army service is mandatory ), and September 11 2001 was my last day of service, as on the 12th of September i was taking my last leave before finishing my tour. I was watching TV on the army barracks i was with some buddies when the newsflash appeared. I remember that the newsflash reported at first about a "freak accident" of a airplane hitting a skyscraper, and then minutes later, as the reporter from NY talked about what happened earlier, the 2nd airplane hit. It was surreal, we couldnt believe what our eyes were seeing... I thought that catastrophies like this happened only in the movies, but this was one of these rare cases that reality is worse than fiction....

There must have been millions of people all over the world watching that event evolve on live TV. It was late evening before midnight here on east coast Australia sept.11th. 2001, watched with dismay all night till dawn. I even rang people, waking them from their beds to put their TV on...now ! Like you....will never forget ! ( had been to NY one year before and later in 2007 also on sept 11. )

I remember like it was yesterday as well. I live in NYC so I was there when it happened. I was sitting in Gym class in High School when I heard some people talking "The Twin Towers are on fire!" I didn't know what they meant, I thought maybe it was a small fire or something. I went upstairs to buy something from the school store and all the shades were down in the hallway over the windows which faced Lower Manhattan. I thought that was a little strange.

Then I went to my next class which was European history. I was in 10th grade at the time. My teacher comes in and says "I don't know what I was thinking coming in here and thinking we're gonna learn about European history." She kept moving in and out the entire class, we didn't learn anything. The kids were just talking about everything. Then our teacher comes in and says "One tower has already fallen oh and the Pentagon was hit too." I didn't know what to think about it all at that point. I was just shocked.

Then two girls walked to the window and looked out of it, we were on the 5th floor and had a perfect view of the Twin Towers. Then one girl turned to face the class and her face was just... mouth open, eyes wide open. I will never forget the look on her face. The blind flies open and there is the second tower falling, and all you see from where we are is Lower Manhattan covered in smoke. It was crazy. A few minutes later a girl is crying in the hallway and I heard one of my classemates say. "I know her. Her mother works in the restaurant on the 110th floor."

That day was crazy... and can you believe my French and Math teachers actually tried to TEACH the class that day? When me and my friend were walking home, all you saw in the distance was the smoke in the air, and you could smell the burning. And we were all the way in Queens.

Just a surreal, crazy day that I will never forget. :ohno:

I remember everything about that day, from the time i woke up till the time I got in the train station where they stopped us by the brooklyn bridge, till leaving the subway seeing the people covered in dust.

My grade 6 teacher wheeled in a TV when the terrorist attacks were happening. I had no idea what was going on (I was 10 at the time) and by the time we came back from recess the towers were gone. We didn't do any work that day, the entire school was in shock - and this was in Toronto!

Sure, it's exciting to think government spooks planted high explosives in the World Trade Center towers, bringing both down after a couple of planes crashed into them. OK......I'm just one person far away from New York. It is sept.11 here.....has been all day, but soon New York is waking to yet another anniversary of 9/11. I visited the WTC in 2000, watched the events of 9/11 unfold on live Tv.....all night here in Australia.....then visited the site on 9/11 2007...a tuesday in pouring rain. Sitting here in my living room watching the movie 'World Trade Center' and looking at the small crystal image of the Centre on my shelf...and the picture taken in 2000 that I carried back to New York in 2007 and signed by New York Fireman that were there that day. I also have a US flag marked with the names of those lost. The World remembers your loss and is thinking of you all today.......RIP all those innocent souls. Good will prevail..............

I saw the twin beams of light as I was walking out of work last night on Grand St in Brooklyn. It was incredible. I saw it out my kitchen window too but by the time I got my camera they had been turned off. I can't imagine what today must be like for those of you who were living here when the tragedy unfolded.

Me and my family watched the thing on FOX tonight and I ...... still just can't believe this actually happened. To me, removed from the situation but having watched it unfold live 8 very short years ago ... it seems like a movie. A movie in which I know every frame by heart. And I still want my pound of flesh! Especially after the compilation FOX showed me tonight. The lights looked great in the low ceiling.

I've never been in the United States, but I guess what happened in New York. It was awful, for something like that has no justification, killing innocent people is damnably! I was a child when it happened, I remember I came from school and on TV what had happened. I can not belive that it's been almost 9 years. I am sorry that the twin towers will not be renewed, they will not build two new towers even bigger, more modern, but it looks like the twin towers that got a new look. Symbolically it would be raised from the ashes. I'sure I will visit New York once, and then I'll sure visit the memorial and lay flowers.

A terrible tradegy for the whole world really and the awful loss of life.

9/11 changed the world & a new fear of terrorism was born.

New York lost its iconic towers and families lost their loved ones.

Never been to New York and I miss the towers in the Media.

Time is a good healer & I hope New Yorkers have moved on but I know thats difficult for the people who were directly affected.

Still makes me emotional and I get upset when I see pictures of the planes hitting the towers, I change the channel.

Transported under escort in silence through the closed streets of New York to JFK Airport hangar. For seven years absence from the Ground Zero 24 August 2009 she returned after restoration of Ground Zero.

OK I made the same point but here is an example where the wide world, a computer and the typed word don't really imply the intent of the person making the post....I don't know georgeflint but know that's not what he meant. Remember that day very well, although I didnt know what impact will it have on this decade. It was a breakthrough, the most important event since WWII

One cool thing about 9/11 is when some newschannels play back their "as it happened" newsreels. Makes me remember what TV used to be like back in the day.
I remember Paula Zhan on top of some midtown building with the smoke far behind, and all the drivel they babbled about during the days afterward, and some of the craziest stories they came up with during the media panic.
It's one of those few times when it felt like you HAD to watch CNN in fear of missing some major news.

Some crazy days. On the other hand the burnt smell that the wind carried at night wasn't too pleasant.

No offense but i don't think it was on the top of the people in the buildings list to take photos

Im not looking for show, but its just interesting that among thousands of people inside no one took photos of whats going on. For example photos of North Tower burning from South Tower.You have to remember that at the time and later, when being evacuated, probably no one has knew that planes have crashed and that day will be one of the most tragic in USA history.

I have much respact for all those who lost their lifes on 9.11 and those who survived or were deeply touched by attacks.

When the North Tower was hit people started to evacuate the South Tower. many were advised to return to their offices as the 'problem' was confined to the other tower. I think the towers oughta just be rebuilt. They weren't particularly pretty, just a pair of extra-tall gray boxes really, but we've got a REALLY sore spot for them. It'd be a really good way to give Al-Qaeda the finger. And once they're rebuilt, cover the roof of both with spotlights all pointing directly up like in the last picture above.

When the North Tower was hit people started to evacuate the South Tower. many were advised to return to their offices as the 'problem' was confined to the other tower. You must remember, this was in 2001, before youtube, before the iphone/smartphone entered the market and when cameras on even the most advanced phones were pretty shitty. Most of the videos you see are taken on actual hand held dedicated video cameras mostly carried by tourists/people sight seeing. The people in the buildings you described were office workers, and who the hell brings a video camera to work?

Yeah, Digital cameras were not as common back then. More likely people in the Millennium Hotel opposite than general office workers having cameras......and in Lower Manhattan many hotel guests may be business people not tourists.......as an aside just heard news the Eiffel Tower in Paris had a bomb threat the day after 'Burkers' were banned in France. So how are average people not to link Muslims with terrorism.....I accept the right for all to exist, but that should be a two way street.

Maybe it's a language barrier thing, but there were no bombs planted on 9/11. It's pretty simple. Fully fueled plane bearing down on a building at 500 miles per hour = destruction.

I think it's a language thing too, and what he meant was how did the terrorists avoid security at the airports. But they had no bombs on them.

I am not an expert or have more information than anyone else......probably less? I was in New York in Sept. 2007 and was handed a DVD on the street by people who subscribe to the Conspiracy theory. I watched it with an open mind but the points you mention can be explained by the events from large airliners impacting the towers. To imagine all this plus bombs....heck, to coordinate all that is too ridiculous........but then people can have wild imaginations if they want.

Today, March 8th 2011 watching TV news here in Australia and a News story came on showing 9/11 vision from police helicopters. It inferred this vision has not been seen before and has just been released ? I would think New York or the US would see this at least at the same time as down here. I think I may have seen it a long time back, maybe on this thread......There must have been many cameras watching that day and guess over the years more will find there way into the public realm. Hard to believe it will be 10 years this September but still as shocking as the day it happened.

Hard to believe it will be 10 years this week. I am also from Melbourne, Australia and was 17 at the time. I'd just arrived home just before 11pm and my brother called me to check out the news. It had been only about 10 minutes after the first plane went in and then we watched as the second one approached and hit the south tower.

Was glued to the television for hours. All newspapers and television networks ran 24/7 coverage of the tragedy for over 2 weeks in Australia. The amount of destruction was just surreal. Even now after a decade, it's an event that you just can't imagine. It was something that was a global disaster and affected people worldwide.

Ok guys, since the beginning of this thread you discredit the conspiracy theories that I see a lot of documentation about it, and many people say different things and many unrealistic theories comes out.
But the main thing is that planes got out of control for a while and the air force didn't respond. We can stay talking about that towers project and if a plane crash in a middle point can affect the base making that kind of collapsing.
But I have 2 questions for you:

- What meant all the people inside the lower levels of the towers, talking about explosions next door and also before the crashes higher?

- Why the building 7 collapsed that day not being touched by any plane and having just some isolated fire burns. Is it not strange for you that a steel structure building fail without a understandable reason? And not in peaces but as a perfect controlled demolition.

I don't want to bother anyone but we need to be realistic on our discussions, I know that was awful and anyone will not forget that day, same as me. We can regret and be angry or nostalgic but these questions stay unexplained for me and for many people.

Okay, I modified to place it as the worst attack in modern history. And I am not discounting the hundreds of thousands or Iraqi, Afghani, and others that have died as a result of the war that has been waged as a result of this attack.

Question. How long did it take to clear all the steel, concrete, glass etc from the site?

Today was a turning point for New York. People finally realized that "Ground Zero" doesn't exist anymore, and it's time to call the WTC by its name: World Trade Center site/plaza.

1WTC looks pretty tall and massive already, flanked by 4WTC which is also climbing up the sky. Everyone could see how the new WTC is regaining its status as the new tallest and mightiest skyscraper complex in NY and in the U.S..

The pools and Memorial look amazing, although they are not 100% finished. For sure, it will be a sight to behold and to pause for a moment in the everlasting stressful life of a metropolitan citizen.

The rise of NY has just begun.

The networks were calling it "Ground Zero" all day today and I was just groaning. None of the workers at the WTC site are allowed to call it that and I guess nobody else got the memo! :lol:

But this is a big reintroduction of ordinary Americans and people around the world to a place that for so long has been nothing but a gaping hole. When the transit hub rises, people are really going to embrace the change! :cheers:

IMHO 1WTC alone has the power to restore the skyline. And now imagine 4 supertalls standing side by side, circuiting the Memorial. I don't think that our brain is ready to process such a sight properly yet. Everyone will be in awe once everything is done.

I saw the twins with my own eyes hundreds of times, from the inside, up close and from afar. Their mass and presence can't be calculated without this reference, and I've no doubt the new complex will be even more spectacular in this sense. I can't wait.

New York City is one of the world's greatest. As a Londoner, I feel a great connection with NYC - maybe because London and New York are so similar. They are probably the two greatest cities in the world, and share the same open, cosmopolitan, liberal instincts as each other. World cities in every sense of the word.

I hope to visit New York again one day soon.

911 is the worse day in modern history, it is the one event that trigger a chain reaction that the whole western world is freak out, it is that one event that start the killing of those 300,000 civilians.

Those 300,000 (or whatever) all die because of 911.

What is worse, 911 is not finish yet. If the American had stopped 911 (assume they want to), then the invasion into Iraq, etc, probably will not happen.

The United States entered that war in 1917 quite late already. Same with World War II (1939-1945), US entry into the War (Dec. 1941) was also 2 years after the War was started by the German invasion of Poland.

Yes, shouldn't forget about Pearl Harbour. That kill 2400 peoples.

One of the things that is often said in conjunction with 9/11 is 'Never Forget'. I'd go along with that but please get things in perspective. What NYC suffered on that day, though terrible, was small in comparison to what a large number of cities around the world have suffered in living memory - and that shouldn't be forgotten either.

Don't forget that one of the reasons that 9/11 is so unforgettable is the number of shocking images - large planes crashing into buildings, people jumping to their deaths, two of the tallest buildings in the world collapsing and the clouds of smoke and dust enveloping lower Manhattan. Most disasters are not so visual but they are just as bad for the people involved in them.

as for WW2, in the 1930's up to 1939 Germany had been annexing territory from it's neighbors. Nobody wanted war in Europe again so the other powers of Europe let it happen. Germany went too far when they invaded Poland, and Great Britain and France declared war.

I would add that the reason the United States joined the war has often been put down to the sinking of the Lusitania - an unarmed passenger liner on route from New York to Liverpool - in which hundreds of Americans died.

The link between this atrocity and America entering the war is rather like that between 9/11 and the Iraq War - not as straight forward as it seems because they both occured two years later (1915/1917 and 2001/2003).

If I remember rightly from my history lessons, the US entered WW1 after the British intercepted a telegram from the German Kaiser to the President of Mexico offering him some of the southern states of the USA if he took the German side in a future war.

Likewise the link between 9/11 and the Iraq War is very tenuous as no link was ever proved between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein. The causes of the war are probably more linked to the outcome of the First Gulf War and the, as it turned out, erroneous belief that Saddam had WMD.

9/11 changed the world & a new fear of terrorism was born.

New York lost its iconic towers and families lost their loved ones.

Never been to New York and I miss the towers in the Media.

Time is a good healer & I hope New Yorkers have moved on but I know thats difficult for the people who were directly affected.

Still makes me emotional and I get upset when I see pictures of the planes hitting the towers, I change the channel.

It is believe that among 14.000-17.000 people were inside the complex at the time of the attacks

Yes there was a few survivors, not many, since only a few could reached the emergency stairs, at least the one that weren't destroyed by the blast

The oldest person was in their 80's and the youngest was 17 (inside the towers) on one of the planes there was a 3 years old

These were the most iconic twin towers ever...I loved them.
