View Full Version : Why do some restaurants not work as well in the East coast as they do in the West coast?
yamota July 11th, 2008, 07:25 PM Specifically, I'm talking about one of the chains of fast food restaurants that's near and dear to every Southern Californians' heart, the Yoshinoya Beef Bowl. Recently, the New York branch of Yoshinoya filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and had to shut down two of their three locations. Now only the Times Square location remains. Yoshinoya has more than 80 locations in the US but most of them are in the west coast.
I myself love the Yoshinoya beef bowl and sometimes when I'm in LA, that's all I eat for lunch and dinner. But how come other people from the east coast don't seem to share my love for the beef bowl from Yoshinoya?
What would happen if in the near future, say an In N Out burger opens in the east coast? Would it become as big in the east as it is in the west?
ChrisLA July 11th, 2008, 10:54 PM Well if it was left up to me Yoshinoya would go out of business in LA too. I think their is horrible, so I can't say I'm surprised they aren't doing well.
I don't see how this is an east coast thing. California Pizza Kitchen, as well as Pinkberry, both so far have been successful in New York. Not sure if either one is in any other eastern city. I heard Fatburgers is in NY (Long Island) now, along with Atlanta, metro Detroit, and I think New Orleans, and Charlotte. I can't say how their doing, and if they are in other eastern cities. But I do know my Detroit metro colleagues was excited for it to open. In fact one collegue said he actually like Fat Burgers much better.
Although not a restaurant, but a market. Trader Joes (a southern california original) is doing very well in NYC, and many other eastern cities. well at least I visit one near downtown Philly and that place was booming early in the morning. Chicago's another one that Trader Joes is doing well.
nygirl July 11th, 2008, 11:26 PM Send us some Pinks, In&Out Burger and Sonic. I bet that would work out no problem.
I-97!! July 12th, 2008, 01:34 AM Send us some Pinks, In&Out Burger and Sonic. I bet that would work out no problem.
We sent you Pinkberry
how about Carls Jr?...
Send us a GREAT New York Pizza parlor and we will consider Sonic...lol
milquetoast July 12th, 2008, 01:44 AM Tastey cheap eats work well just about anywhere. It just depends on regional cultcha. I, myself, have burnt out on In-N-Out for now, but gimme some authentic cheese steaks from Philly, lobstah roll from Boston or some frickin' pizza from New York and I'm there! I might even have it flown here. If you're talking about chains, in burger saturated Southern California I doubt White Castle would have too much of an impact- but with tranny eastern coastahs, yes! Would people in the east go for El Polo Loco or Fat Burger (if they don't already?) Maybe. Maybe not.
milquetoast July 12th, 2008, 01:45 AM We sent you Pinkberry
how about Carls Jr?...
Carl's Jr. is 'Hardees' out there I think :)
Imperfect Ending July 12th, 2008, 05:40 AM Not as well-known. Like Sonic.
phattonez July 12th, 2008, 07:24 AM It would be nice if someone would send us some Sonic LA way (why does Bakersfield get all of them?). I've never tried it, and the closest one to me is in Long Beach or some place really far like that.
milquetoast July 12th, 2008, 08:10 AM What is this 'Sonic' business? We have them here and they're no big deal. Del Taco, Fatburger, In-N-Out, Carl's do better I think :)
Imperfect Ending July 12th, 2008, 09:25 AM I've only seen Sonic on t.v. before, but they make their ads so tempting
alex3000 July 12th, 2008, 12:48 PM Because they have sunrises and we have sunsets. ;)
Imperfect Ending July 12th, 2008, 08:43 PM ^^ Alex, where have you been!?
alex3000 July 13th, 2008, 09:53 AM ^^ Alex, where have you been!?
Here. :tongue3:
I read the forum every single day, I just don't post anymore. I'm too lazy. I lost "the spark".
But you will always see me browsing the forums ... Actually, you might see me browsing the forum a little bit too much, but that's because I log in from my iPhone and it doesn't sign me out of the page unless I close the page or sign off ... which I never do.
yamota July 13th, 2008, 05:02 PM Carl's Jr. is 'Hardees' out there I think :)
Hardees is known out here as more of a hangout for rednecks, most of the Hardees I know of are out in the boondocks where all the hillbilies live. And the fact that Hardees sponsors a NASCAR team doesn't really help.
Westsidelife July 13th, 2008, 10:19 PM Didn't Sonic originate from Oklahoma?
yamota July 14th, 2008, 04:23 AM Once in a while I see commercials for jack in the box and I think wow they finally opened up a jack in the box here! But then I realize it was a national commericial. Why do they tease us like that?
xXFallenXx July 14th, 2008, 12:29 PM It makes sense that In n Out, the best fast food chain, would stay here, in the best state, doesn't it?
(Nevada & Arizona are extremely lucky we share)
yamota July 14th, 2008, 02:11 PM funny you should mention that as there's a civil war going on right now between the members of the family that owns in N out. The younger members say they should expand to the east coast, but the older members say that would dilute the quality and should just stay in the west coast. I agree with the younger members, come on old timers, it's the 21st century already, time to expand
kidA July 15th, 2008, 03:11 AM Naw man...its gives this side of the country to be proud of. That would just ruin the whole experience of eating a nice in-n-out burger in our beautiful weather.
yamota July 15th, 2008, 03:48 AM are you telling me that the only thing the west coast has to be proud of is a hamburger? I'm sure there's more than that :snicker:
milquetoast July 15th, 2008, 03:56 AM You gotta have those criss-cross palm trees out front. Can't have that on the least coast :)
yamota July 15th, 2008, 05:13 AM to me the best thing about the west coast is a 4-way tie between in N out, yoshinoya, santee alley or the entire san francisco bay area
savvysearch July 16th, 2008, 10:24 AM are you telling me that the only thing the west coast has to be proud of is a hamburger? I'm sure there's more than that :snicker:
There's something very warm weather about In-N-Out. It should be eaten on a beautiful cloudless blue day.
xXFallenXx July 16th, 2008, 10:41 AM ^ Exactly. Try eating a Double-Double during a blizzard in Chicago. You can't. It's against the laws of physics.
milquetoast July 16th, 2008, 11:17 AM That is true! The outer wrapper is fine. The innermost protective wrapper, the one that would protect the kind of hearty, lushessness that would make a Chicagoan's cold heart stop, would unfortunately freeze. However, sometimes the wrapper doesn't stop me :)
yamota July 16th, 2008, 02:26 PM don't eat the wrapper milqy, that's why you have a hard time pooping
milquetoast July 17th, 2008, 02:22 AM How dare you one-up me?:)
WA July 17th, 2008, 03:10 AM Carl's Jr. is 'Hardees' out there I think :)
Yup, exactly, I live on the East Coast and didn't know they were one and the same until a few weeks ago by accident online.
But I think it has to do with what people are used to, West Coast has many chains that people on the West Coast are used to, same for the East. If chains, such as Trader Joes, has a good enough reputation that gets to both coasts and a company decides to expand, then it may do well on both Coasts. A company that only one coast really knows well and the other doesn't IMO is less likely to do well because persons of the other coast aren't comfortable with it.
milquetoast July 17th, 2008, 09:09 AM Hey, WA? I'm wondering what it is exactly that keeps some from going bi (coastal) where others succeed. Example: There are no "White Castles" to be found, yet we are familiar with the movie and can purchase frozen 'sliders' at the supermarket.
I-97!! July 22nd, 2008, 11:30 PM I had In N Out this Sunday down in San Diego and it was great then I thought about it if I was somewhere in the East Coast...and it seemed not so great. lol
:eat: :cheers2:
future_trance011 July 27th, 2008, 01:24 PM don't eat the wrapper milqy, that's why you have a hard time pooping
Poor Milqy! If only those burger wrappers were more gastronomically-friendly. Oh, well!! Until then, this should do the trick......

milquetoast July 28th, 2008, 04:44 AM I'll bet the exact opposite happens to both coasts where Taco Bell is concerned!
nygirl July 28th, 2008, 06:38 PM I think at one point I liked Taco Bell but the more I thought about it that really is complete garbage.
yamota July 28th, 2008, 07:00 PM hey guys, guess what, I spent the weekend in New York city and I got to eat at the Yoshinoya in Times Square again! Mmm-mm good! I'd show you pictures, but the damn SD card on my camera got corrupted and all my pictures got screwed up  I wanted to show you guys the picture of me wearing my Lakers T-shirt with the Chrysler building in the background. Anyone know how I can retrieve pics from a corrupted SD card?
milquetoast July 29th, 2008, 04:34 AM The Chrysler from ESB or Rockahfeelah? You in a t-shirt am not required :)
yamota July 30th, 2008, 02:24 PM nah, from a little bridge over east 42nd street. Wish I could get it out of my SD card :(
nygirl July 31st, 2008, 12:17 AM ^ That would be Tudor City ;) Also, it is pretty tolerable for anyone in Manhattan to wear any sports jersey. So long as you are not in the stadiums up in the Bronx or over in Queens.
yamota July 31st, 2008, 01:34 AM heh, no worries, I never left manhattan :) I didn't ever wanna leave. There are some amazingly beautiful women on that island :naughty:
nygirl July 31st, 2008, 03:43 AM I wouldn't mind bringing back a jack in the box. There was one years and years ago on Long Island but I haven't seen or heard of any since. I don't know if I would consider it a restaurant but Pinkberry does very well. Lines go out the door much of the time. I, myself frequent the one in our Koreatown quite often.
Westsidelife July 31st, 2008, 03:46 AM Cheesecake Factory seems to be successful throughout the entire country, not just on the East Coast.
yamota July 31st, 2008, 02:54 PM on a sad note, the crumbling economy has just clamied another casualty. Bennigan's announced it has filed for barkruptcy and will close it's doors. Another one bites the dust :(
nygirl July 31st, 2008, 06:40 PM Bennigans, Chilis, Applebees all suck anyway.. its all about TGIF.
yamota July 31st, 2008, 06:47 PM right now my fave is sweetwater. I don't know if they have this in NY or CA but I recommend it. The only problem I have with it is sometimes it's quite hard to get a last minute dinner reservation on a weekend.
nygirl July 31st, 2008, 11:52 PM Nah I'm more of a Mortons and Peter Lugars steak house kinda girl.
yamota August 1st, 2008, 02:28 AM Ruth's Chris Steak House too? :)
nygirl August 1st, 2008, 02:28 AM ^ You and Sean Hannity, hannety, hanatey......
soup or man August 1st, 2008, 05:26 AM TGIF is garbage. I can only take so many nuclear orange chicks saying, 'LIKE SO YEAH' at the start of every sentence.
milquetoast August 1st, 2008, 08:35 AM KFC is real popoolar in Bahgdad right now. How's that for another coast.
yamota August 1st, 2008, 02:28 PM ^ You and Sean Hannity, hannety, hanatey......
sorry, I don't watch FOX news [sarcasm on] they're just too "fair and balanced" for me [sarcasm off]
nygirl August 1st, 2008, 06:32 PM I watch Glen Beck for a good laugh.
phattonez August 1st, 2008, 07:57 PM Bennigans, Chilis, Applebees all suck anyway.. its all about TGIF.
All of the above are terrible.
phattonez August 1st, 2008, 07:57 PM sorry, I don't watch FOX news [sarcasm on] they're just too "fair and balanced" for me [sarcasm off]
I hope then that at least you see the bias in the rest of the news organizations too. FOX is singled out, but why? Are all other news channels unbiased? Not from what I've seen.
yamota August 2nd, 2008, 01:30 AM well, when every other news story is all about how unqualified Barack Obama is to become President, there's maybe a tinge of bias in there :)
milquetoast August 2nd, 2008, 03:00 AM O'Bama IS nowhere near qualified as a frosh senator. He lives in the 'theoretical' world. And nygirl, Sean says you're a great American. http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/SeanH.jpg rivervalleyradio.com (Oh, you wanna do him bad, don't cha?) By the way, way ta shut down the house, Pelosi
milquetoast August 2nd, 2008, 03:03 AM Now that I had the last word, let's get back on topic :)
phattonez August 2nd, 2008, 09:01 AM well, when every other news story is all about how unqualified Barack Obama is to become President, there's maybe a tinge of bias in there :)
I never denied that bias, but how just look at the difference between when McCain went to the Middle East and when Obama went there. Just a microcosm of the bias everywhere else.
yamota August 2nd, 2008, 09:19 PM well, I'm sure if the situation was reversed and it was McCain who was getting all this media attention, the conservatives wouldn't be complaining at all
soup or man August 3rd, 2008, 04:32 AM It's really smoogy in China.
phattonez August 3rd, 2008, 08:04 PM well, I'm sure if the situation was reversed and it was McCain who was getting all this media attention, the conservatives wouldn't be complaining at all
Some would, some wouldn't. He's not the Republican's favorite candidate. However, the liberals would have a right to complain about it, but right now, they're too busy being giddy about Obama.
milquetoast August 4th, 2008, 05:45 AM What happened here? http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/imgad.jpg
Shouldn't we be talkin' restaurants?
nygirl August 4th, 2008, 06:26 PM Politics make me lose my appetite.
milquetoast August 5th, 2008, 03:57 AM Here Here!
vahebaronian August 5th, 2008, 11:17 PM Thinking how the country has been ruined the last eight years makes me sick.
phattonez August 6th, 2008, 01:37 AM Thinking how the country has been ruined the last eight years makes me sick.
Yes, your quality of life is just terrible now isn't it? Oh wait .

^^ Not!!!! :ohno:
Definitely leaning towards McCain*
Getting back to the thread, so what is this thread about anyhow???
I-97!! August 6th, 2008, 07:01 PM They are wondering why fast food chains do really good in the West Coast but not as popular in the East Coast. NYC to be precise. They also want to bargain for an In N Out in Manhattan. ;) :P
nygirl August 7th, 2008, 12:02 AM We will give you the Hotel Pennsylvania for all of your In N Outs. You still got Jack in the Box so you will suffice. C'mon, good deal...
Westsidelife August 7th, 2008, 01:11 AM ^ The Hotel Pennsylvania is a beautiful classic building. Why do so many New Yorkers want it gone?
Fern~Fern* August 7th, 2008, 02:14 AM They are wondering why fast food chains do really good in the West Coast but not as popular in the East Coast. NYC to be precise. They also want to bargain for an In N Out in Manhattan. ;) :P
^ Gotcha 97!!!!
Let's see here............ In & Out on the East Coast?
Noooooooooooo it will not be the same without the sunny 72 degree weather and no drive thru. No hot perky Southern Cali chicks with "Oh my God" attitude taking your orders. :ohno:
milquetoast August 7th, 2008, 04:53 AM I don't think Jack in the Box is strong enough, but you can hand over Donald Trump and we can work him over for a few Fatburgers :)
I-97!! August 12th, 2008, 10:00 PM We will give you the Hotel Pennsylvania for all of your In N Outs. You still got Jack in the Box so you will suffice. C'mon, good deal...
You would have to give us all of Manhattan and Central Park...and maybe then the request will follow through. Soon after, L.A. SSC members would look over the petition. After half a year of discussion and approvals...we would give you an uncertain answer. :)
nygirl August 13th, 2008, 12:05 AM Why would you want all of Manhattan? Where the hell would you put it? How about Inwood and Washington Heights.. wait scratch Washington Heights.
Oh you can have The Donald.
I emailed some contact from In N Out's main page like a month ago and told them they should start marketing in NY like Sonic does and consider expanding their franchise. Do you think they've just been laughing this whole time or do they LIKE TOTALLY not check their emails?
I ate White Castle the other night without a belly full of beers... not the same thing. Murder Burgers.. indeed.
On topic.. Pinkberry needs to open new stores in Manhattan. The lines go out the door and one Saturday wrapped around the block. So I'd say they are doing well on the eastcoast.
koolkid August 13th, 2008, 12:12 AM I was at my friends place watching tv and all of a sudden we see this commercial, "blah blah blah, only at Jack in the box". Since when is there a Jack in the Box round here? I'd check it out though...
nygirl August 13th, 2008, 12:54 AM In the early 90's there was one somewhere on Long Island. I remember going there at least twice when we would take family trips to Montauk.
yamota August 13th, 2008, 02:25 PM A Johnny Rockets just opened up in downtown DC near where I work. I've only had a chance to eat there one time. I remember the first JohnnY Rockets I ate at was the one on Melrose avenue about 20 years ago. I remember thinking wow melrose avenue, I bet this is where all the celebrities hang out :)
I-97!! August 13th, 2008, 07:43 PM Does NYC really not have a large amount of Fast Food Restaurants? No Jack in the Box???
That Johnny Rockets is still there and its always filled with people. Astro Burger in Santa Monica is also really good! A lot of movie stars stop by...
nygirl August 14th, 2008, 12:38 AM ^^ We got a lot of papaya joints where you can get yourself a dirty water dog for a buck and cheaper. Theres always McDonalds, and KFC, and Burger Kings but those are all crap.
Except the papaya places. Say what you will but they are quicker, cheaper, and pretty good.
milquetoast August 14th, 2008, 04:41 AM Astro Burger is a chain? That was down the street from my house on Gardner ON Santa Monica :) When a decidedly unregal Dame Helen Mirren was spotted tucking into a juicy burger on Sunday night, she wasn't the first Oscar-winner to celebrate with such a humble snack.
http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/HilarySwank.jpg cheatykitchen
Two years ago Hilary Swank was snapped at West Hollywood's Astro Burger plonking her best actress statuette for Million Dollar Baby on the counter before ordering a fast food feast.

Jack in the Box locations (only east coast locations are in the carolinas, sorry NYC and half the country :ohno:)

I too am shocked it is not a national chain by now.

milquetoast August 14th, 2008, 05:35 AM It's just your basic hamburger joint. It's most memorable aspect was when I was a child, you would pull up and give your order to the Jack in the Box clown. The 2,353-square-foot, 74-seat restaurant will be at 15110 S. La Grange Road.
Hip-hop artist Kanye West's KW Foods LLC, which has rights to develop 10 Fatburgers in the Chicago area, plans to open another one in January at 95th and Western Avenue in the Beverly neighborhood, according to a spokeswoman for Santa Monica, California based burger chain Fatburger Corp. Chigaco Business -Powered By Crain's-
yamota August 21st, 2008, 09:44 PM Another fast food chain I wish would open here is hotdog on a stick. I love their corn dogs plus the all-female employees and their funny looking hats are pretty hot.

nygirl August 25th, 2008, 06:29 PM ^^ We took our bikes out to the indian reservations way out on Long Island the other day and found the last Roy Rogers on the island. I don't know why it was such a big deal because the food is crap but everyone I went with was over joyed.
yamota August 25th, 2008, 06:36 PM Roy Rogers used to be all over the place around here too, now there's none :( Too bad too because I loved their burgers. Reminded me of Carl's Jr. burgers. Even when I was a kid working at a steakhouse at the mall, for lunch I would go accross the way to the Roy's. One day my boss caught me eating at the Roy's, I thought he was gonna fire me, but then I realized, he went there to eat too, so it was kinda like our little secret
milquetoast August 26th, 2008, 07:59 AM Yams, I know Hardee's is out there in the east somewhere, but I used to listen to a D.C. based talk radio program here up until earlier this year when the head guy retired in April. They were on in small markets so no one in L. A. would know who it was, and this guy Don (from The Don and Mike Show) would talk up how he would come to L A X and go straight to the Carl's Jr. next to the topless bar on Aviation Blvd. Do you know of that show, since you're there? He would not shut up about Carls Jr!
nygirl August 26th, 2008, 06:31 PM Got myself a god awful Philly Cheese steak from Nathans yesterday.
yamota August 26th, 2008, 06:41 PM oh yeah, I used to listen to Don & Mike all the time. I remember when I used to shuttle between the Don & Mike show and Howard Stern in the mornings. Even when I was in LA I would listen to them, when I wasn't tuned in to Rick Dees on KIIS FM. Havent listened to them in quite a while though.
But about that Carl's Jr. near LAX, I am quite familiar with that myself. If we had time, that would always be our last stop before the airport to get a bite to eat because there are no Carl's Jrs inside LAX.
Westsidelife August 26th, 2008, 10:05 PM Langer's and Pink's would definitely work well on the East Coast. They'd give Katz's and Nathan's a run for their money.
nygirl August 27th, 2008, 12:40 AM Judging by what I've been shown here in the LA forums I think Pinks would even top Nathans. Pinks is inventive and Nathans is very traditional. You got some choice but it is limited to Mustard, Ketchup, Kraut, Relish, Chili, and Cheese... no bacon :( . You can't beat their chili fries though, or can you?
In & out has still not gotten back to me.
Westsidelife August 27th, 2008, 01:47 AM ^ How good is Katz's? Is it the best place in NYC for pastrami?
LA's got great pastrami. Tops is my favorite (their onion rings are the best), although I have yet to try Langer's (which is an LA institution). The next time you come to LA, definitely try either one of them. They're both accessible by Metro.
Westsidelife August 27th, 2008, 05:38 AM I talked myself into having a pastrami sandwich and onion rings from Tops for dinner tonight...

Am I the only one that is completely disgusted by Kanye West? Why do people follow this guy sooo much? I just don't get it. What really got me thinking about this is when Yahoo homepage had a question..."Where is Kanye West?" when referring to the Democratic National Convention. If I'm ever in Chicago, I will make it a point to NOT visit any of these restaurants.
milquetoast August 27th, 2008, 07:15 AM Kanye West is just a guy on the scene right now. Has some different sounding pop stuff I wouldn't dare refer to as 'Rap'. Even though he comes across as an ass, he gets the fact that he's not the greatest piece of shit in the world. He is a perfectionist though and probably difficult. Plus, we all gots to feel sorry for someone who lost his mama because of a needless miscalculation :) If you can't find classic artery bursting Chicago fare when there, don't rob yourself of a Fatburger!
milquetoast August 27th, 2008, 07:16 AM Two things: One, I have to feel we have great pastrami because of the established Jewish pop. and two, no more close ups of good looking food. You're killing me :) (Since you didn't credit any photographer, and may have taken the picture yourself, Westy, which would be rare for you, I'm going with a feeling I've had for awhile and release the fact that you're Stephen Friday. Aren't you? It's ok if you are. We won't treat you any differently.)
Westsidelife August 27th, 2008, 07:28 AM ^ Stephen Friday has his own account on here (fridayinla), although he does not post here anymore.
