Many of the projects are not just high-rises but also new civil infrastructure that is of strategic importantance to the Mackay region. Would greatly appreciate any additional information being supplied by other forumers or visitors. Thanks.

I've just added a number of new projects and proposed developments that I came across in my trip to Mackay last weekend. Also amended some of the ones I had under 'construction' as they have not yet commenced.

New ones include:

Unknown multi-storey development fronting Nelson & Macalister St, self-erecting crane on site.
Unknown 'major' development on Cnr Peel & Victoria St. Area recently fenced off, zoned for commerical use.
Mooted construction site for multiple mid-rise residential buildings. By the same developer as The Crown Apartments. No further information at this stage.

Did a lot of tidying up today of the development map, and added all the information I have on the Mackay Marina/ Eastpoint precincts. Like all of Australia, there are now a lot of approved projects which are now on the market for sale, so their future is uncertain.

When I get time next I plan to get more information about the Northern Beaches projects (like Ramada etc) and might make a separate thread for The Beach Mackay (http://www.thebeachmackay.com.au/) when I get the chance too.

i spoke to canelands management yesterday, only to be dissapointed that, the project is still under study and they dont actually have council approval as of yet, but they have definately secured the land, so fingers crossed the designs are approved, because that shopping centre could easily fair well to triple in size, trust me i work there, and it is starting to get busy like it is around christmas time everyday!!
I would have to estimate they would get between 20000 -40000 people through there doors everyday , and about 50000 a day around christmas.
it is by far the busiest shopping centre ive ever been to on a day to day basis perspective.................and yes i work there lol.

Thanks for your insight Mick, its great to have a local from Mackay able to contribute some photos and news of latest development activity. Im currently in Italy, and may be in Europe for a few months with work so wont be able to contribute much then but will certainly continue to read with interest.

Cheers.

Oh btw rednut, see that big cleared dirt patch on bottom right of screen, used to be old rail yards and they are decontaminating the site, and from what i hear, it is going to be town houses and apartments ranging from 1-5 stories, hopefully they might go higher. also has anyone heared Rumor that mayor meng wants to increase height restrictions in certain zones, including cbd ? i heard 40 story limit might be being implied on the cbd WOOT WOOT!!!

40 Stories, I highly doubt it. 20-30 max, Dont think you'd be able to get a 40st in Adelaide let alone a developer who would be prepared to propose a 40st highrise in Mackay.

maybe not 40 stories, but possibly 30, we have nice beaches, and the reason height limits were introduced originally was to stop all the interested developers turning east point gold coast style in the 80s. so its quiet possible if restrictions were never implied that we could have had the tallest buildings in northern aus. haha hopefully some developers go bigger than 12 stories in the near future. at lest 20 st in the cbd would be good and some 30st at east point

I cant see it happening, Nor could I in Rockhampton. But Darwin is a small town and it has a 33st plus a 28st ugly highrise.

mick87
January 17th, 2009, 10:48 AM
u cant bear to think that one day townsville might not have the tallest buildings haha. and btw Darwin is growing really fast, i can see it being alot bigger than tsv or cairns in 30 years. and having 50-70st buildings.

Burden
January 18th, 2009, 03:42 AM
No its simple, Macaky has enforced height restrictions, its only coming from your mouth that "There changing" the height limits which I highly doubt, Secondly Macaky is yet to reach triple digit numbers therefore doesn't warrant 30st buildings. As for Darwin, you'd be kidding yourself to think Darwin would get 70st buildings, Brisbane, Sydney even Perth dont have Scrapers with that many floors. I'd rather have a sprawl of aesthetically pleasing 20st buildings, then some of the shit going up in Darwin at the moment. Townsville has 20st height restrictions.

Jesse24
January 18th, 2009, 06:28 AM
Cairns could certainly sustain a high building such as 100m but it will never happen because of the airport so Cairns is out. Rockhampton by the sounds of it needs to fix their CBD such as upgrading roads to cope with congestion in order to cope with a 100m and I just don't think a developer would want to build a 100m building in Mackay for a few more years yet. Townsville has the best chance of getting a 100m building I believe.

mick87
January 18th, 2009, 08:55 AM
yeah i said from wot i have heard about the height limits, but i cant see them being lifted, hopefully some applications will be subject to review and put past council succesfully. brisbane has 70st plus propoals. townsville needs more highrise sprawl, its weird they just build them randomly in mackay, mostly along water. BTW Townsville reminds me of brissy and mackay like goldcoast. like we have water ways they could turn into canal estates all over the place and shit loads of un developed beach front land. townsville just has little ross river ck which is like brisbanes dirty river.

A few additions to the map:

Lanai is now complete (hurray!)
The 7-storey mixed-use proposal on Peel st featured late last year in the Daily Mercury has been added under the Approved list (No. 2)
The development fronting MaCalaister & Nelson st has been identified as the new Quest Serviced Apartments complex. This will now be covered in the Mackay Projects (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=126804) thread given it's over halfway complete.

Edit: Also added a link to the new Canelands Extension thread.

i might add that the entertainment centre is progressing nicely. Fusion is also underway and nearly at street level.....well the "core".
Is there any photos anyone wants of anything in mackay?

Red Nut
January 29th, 2009, 12:40 PM
Yes I did take a few shots of the Convention Centre's progress in December, they're projecting it will be finished by mid-way through this year. The Mackay Regional Council (http://www.mackay.qld.gov.au/about_council/major_projects/mackay_entertainment_and_convention_centre) website also has progress shots, which I'll add to the Mackay Projects (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=126804) thread.

Regarding photos, would greatly appreciate photos of just about any of the developments currently under construction. As someone based in Mackay, would also appreciate if you can keep an eye on those sites which have been approved and report if there's been any movement. Is that asking too much? :)

Cheers Mick.

BTW have you seen how Eastpoint is coming along?

Yeah i check out all the projects once a week lol, im obsessed. As for east point, most of the land has been cleared, all of the tracks are sadly gone and i cant gain access in there now, however when i get a new clutch for my 4wd i will get to a high vantage point on a dune or something and get some pics of the progress. Also i might get some shots of plantation palms so everyone has an idea of the scale of the project. and a few of the other sub divisions being built behind it towards blacks beach.

January 30th, 2009, 02:37 AM
oh man had the craziest dream last night haha, i was on the north bank of the pioneer river and all the projects in this forum were completed and i was taking pictures to put in this thread. btw mackay looked good

mick87
January 30th, 2009, 08:16 AM
speaking of the north bank , i have a funny feeling that when the bridge duplication and road works are complete that the retail sector in that general area should boom alot more. theres so much available land that see's mass amounts of traffic, probably in the vicinity of 35 000+ vpd there that i can see more commercial land being released. Hopefully the shops in the area will expand with the added roads and ring rd in the area, so at least a servo and minimart should be put in there somewhere. ill stop rambling now.

- The Pointglen preliminary development application for the old Railyard site on Tennyson St.

Pointglen have proposed a similar project to "the beach mackay" it is proposed inbetween binnington esplenade where it breaks and is just beach and scrub, approximately 400 meters north of the beach, and is comprised of apartments up to 7 stories. also it will act as a levee bank and storm surge draining area if the need arises........

Hi RedNut, I am new to the forum. I work within the development industry in Mackay and can help with any questions anyone might have regarding heights, zonings etc. Can I add to your plan, a 10 storey development on the corner of river and wellington streets. It is unnamed at present.

Andergrove21
August 4th, 2009, 09:02 AM
Unknown 'major' development on Cnr Peel & Victoria St. Area recently fenced off, zoned for commerical use. Are you talking western side of Hungry Jacks? It would be the proposed upgrade and extension of Hungry Jacks.

With the development on Nelson Street, can you be more specific on the address? There is a lot of proposal in Nelson and River Streets.

Are u serious? Corner of wellington and river st? thats excellent news, that brings that area to having 3 completed highrises (nelsons on the river, rivage and lanai), 1 under construction(fusion) and 3 proposed ( QM Apartments, the DA approved site for 49 apartments on the corner of nelson and river across from lanai and the project you speak of Andergrove21)

Hi Andergorve, great to have another Mackayite on board. Thanks for the updates too, sorry for my slow response. I've actually just moved out of Australia (to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia of all places) so will depend on the likes of yourself, Mick and MackayMB to get information so I can update the map. Will make amendments over the coming days :)

Edit: BTW the 10 storey development on the corner of river and wellington streets, is that on the western corner (opposite Rivage) or eastern corner (opposite Lanai)?

Andergrove21
August 6th, 2009, 08:20 AM
Thanks Mick87. I cant find any recent development applications for the site. I believe the old buildings were knocked down to prevent undesirables from using the buildings and they were so old anyway, they may well have fallen down by themselves

mick87, I dont work in either.

BTW the 10 storey development on the corner of river and wellington streets, is that on the western corner (opposite Rivage) or eastern corner (opposite Lanai)?
Answer: Eastern Side of Wellington Street on the corner with River Street. Extends 2 blocks along River Street.
I will have to compile a list of project that I am aware of and see if I can find web-sites, more information etc. Will take a couple of days

Mick87,

Here are some of the one I know dating back to 2007. Many of the projects are speculative and will never be constructed. During the recent boom up to 2007, many developers undertook development applications to assess the local market or for commercial gain to on-sell the lots to other developers. But from 2008 onwards, due to the Global townturn, much of these speculative developers have gone.

69 River Street 47 Unit MDU (10 Storeys) + Shops
44-52 Victoria Street 50 Unit MDU
29 River Street 4 Unit MDU, 84 (Motel Rooms) + Shops
50 Carlyle Street 173 Room Motel + Shops
63 River Street 126 Room Motel
8 River Street 41 Unit MDU
33 River Street 8 Storeys + Shops
106 Alfred Street 6 Storey Commerical Building + Shops
295 Alfred Street 17 Unit MDU + Shops
7 Peel Street 7 Storey Commerical Building + Shops
4 Nelson Street 80 Unit MDU
27 River Street 43 Unit MDU
27 Gordon Street 50 Unit MDU
22 Gregory Street 7 Storey Mixed Use, Commercial + 60 Unit MDU
6 Nelson Street 49 Unit MDU + Shops

Please accept my aplogises for any double ups on Red Nuts Map. Andergrove21

106 Alfred Street 6 Storey Commerical Building + Shops - Is that the site of the old ambulance headquarters behind the former Mater Hospital?

Got wind of the 8 River St site a few weeks back, the old Paxtons building (where the Waterfront Restaurant is).

Otherwise the only other one I don't have marked on the development map is the one on Carlyle st (same developer as Latitude). Andergrove, being involved in the local development industry, do you know what's happened with those sites that were being auctioned off (incl. Latitude and the Convention Centre hotel)? Cheers.

About to update these onto the map.

Edit: Made the following changes:

- Added the Paxton building proposal on River st, the Carlyle st Motel site which is for sale and the one of Cnr Wellington & River st.
- Have put in the Quest Apartments as being completed, although this is an assumption as they are opening in August.
- Tennyson st mega-proposal goes from proposed to approved.

Anything I've missed guys?

RedNut,
The Latitude At Mackay is still up for sale. I have heard of some interest but nothing substantial. Here is the story of the crash of the builder: Daily Mercury - Latitude-Builder-Crashes (http://www.dailymercury.com.au/story/2008/06/27/apn-latitude-builder-crashes-with-big/) and if you would like to buy the site Click here.. (http://www.realcommercial.com.au/commercial-real-estate/5510096)

The rumours are that construction of the Convention Centre Hotel is underway again after the recent upgrades to the MECC. Massland (http://www.massland.com.au/alfred.html) still has the project listed on their web site

Another 9-10 storey apartment complex was approved by council this week situated on River St next to the approved Pier development and a similair construction out over the river. This is the previous mentionef Waterfront restaurant site. It sure is an interesting design and will definately compliment the area adjacent to the new Bluewatewr Quay.
