View Full Version : MetroCard question
Toronto2008 July 15th, 2008, 08:09 AM hey im coming to flushing meadows for a week to shop/see fam and i have a quick question about your subways. I am planning on getting the 1 day unltd metrocard for the subway (i think its 7.50USD), does that also work for the PATH train? i want to take that train from WTC to Newport Centre Mall, NJ because driving in nyc....well....you know that better than i do lol
koolkid July 15th, 2008, 08:24 AM Unlimited metrocards won't work, unfortunately...
cbotnyse July 15th, 2008, 01:57 PM no it doesn't. I learned this the hard way.
philvia July 15th, 2008, 07:04 PM going to a new jersey mall to shop? ewww :)

I agree - there are many places in Manhattan alone I could easily recommend.
I also shop outside the city, but when given the choice, I'd rather be in the city.

lol i was only going there because a buddy of mine told me that the tax rate at that mall is 3.5% (in ontario, 14%) but if you guys have better places to go id love to hear it

really? so only single ride cards work on the path or is it an entirely different fare system?

That depends on what you are shopping for. ;)
For example, if you are looking for clothes and you have unlimited funds to spend, there's always either 5th Ave or Madison on the UES.
I like to spend as little as possible if I can - Century 21 is one fine discount dept. store I recommend on Church St. directly across from the WTC.
My goodness, you can spend hours just walking up and down the streets in any given neighborhood to find some treasures if you have the time. :cheers2:
hkskyline July 16th, 2008, 09:30 AM Yes, I found some good stuff at Century 21, although I also had a good time at Woodbury, about an hour's drive north of the city.
lokinyc July 16th, 2008, 04:32 PM If you're staying in Queens, why not just take the subway to Queens Center Mall?

lokinyc July 16th, 2008, 04:34 PM BTW, PATH is an entirely different system. There are nodes in the network where you can transfer between the two systems but they operate on a different fare network.
Tymel July 16th, 2008, 07:09 PM Man, just go to Queens Center mall. It is big and has very nice clothing in it.
Roosevelt Field on Long Island is another great mall.
ramvid01 July 16th, 2008, 07:09 PM Different fare system in the sense that they cost different amounts to ride but you can still use a pay per ride metrocard.
Lili July 18th, 2008, 08:52 PM I think he wants to go to New Jersey to shop because their sales tax there is much lower.

What good is a sales tax when the prices are higher?
I will stand by my word that there are unique places in NYC that you can't find anywhere. :okay:
ramvid01 July 19th, 2008, 05:03 AM Isn't the sales tax for clothing under 125 dollars 0 in New York?

i just checked out century 21s website, seems like macys but better prices and its right beside wtc (Y)
woodbury is amazing im going there on my way back to toronto, and also making a stop at waterloo outlets about an hour east of buffalo

You can find the same things at Macy's or Bloomingdale's, but not at those prices.
BTW, you can get the "Donald Trump" collection @ C21 at a fraction of the price you will find at Macy's.
The Urban Politician July 19th, 2008, 09:22 PM If you want to shop at a great mall that is easily accessible with your Metrocard, get your ass on the R train to Queens and get off at Woodhaven Blvd. That's where the Queens Mall is. HUGE! Very near the subway, and pedestrian-friendly.
The Urban Politician July 19th, 2008, 09:23 PM Woodbury is meh, very scenic though.
IMO, the best outlet shopping I've ever seen in this area is in Vermont and near King of Prussia, PA.
New Jack City July 21st, 2008, 12:30 AM I prefer Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island for shopping.
But good old street shopping in Soho is good stuff too.
AndySocks July 21st, 2008, 04:15 AM as long as you're in NYC limits, for apparel under $110, tax is nada, and there is only state tax of 4.5% on items over $110. some sneaker boutiques in the city drop the price of msrp $110 to 109 so that their customers aren't hit with the tax. how kind of them.
Queens Center wins the andysocks awards for "easiest mall to navigate." i'm not a shopper, but i do have to buy things every now and then, so that's an important issue for me, haha.

ive been wanting to do some street shopping
no real destination, just walk along and find hidden gems that no internet travel site can tell you about
those are the best IMO....the stores that only the locals know about

hey i got another question for you booze hounds out there
where do u buy BEER??? in ontario we just buy it at a place called (brace yourselves) the Beer Store. In ny, some people tell me its sold in grocery stores, some tell me convenience stores but they only sell popular brands like the millers, budweiser, busch which no offence, is comparable to water. if anyone knows a store where there is someone who is knowledgeable about beer and is lenient on the legal age (im only 20, il play the innocent "i didnt know it was 21" act) please let me know! thanks
