Fountainhead October 21st, 2003, 03:19 PM it's a nice tower...still not sure about the yellow back though. There is a fine line between 70's fugly and 00's cool modernism. The front reminds be a lot of Brzzy's casino towers....similar proportions. Looking forward to seeing some nice Engellen Moore classy details emerge in the coming months:D
JayT October 22nd, 2003, 02:00 AM My Brisbane biotechnology thread has vanished just when I needed it for research. I had to find out some information I posted about state government biotechnology protection of industry issues ant its gone.
Oh well - nice building BTW.

CULWULLA October 22nd, 2003, 04:23 AM Engelen Moore also designed Sydney's ALTAIR which sits atop Kings Cross Tunnel behind Elan.
The $80 mill res block won the "best multiple housing award in the World Architecture awards!
the 16 storey was given first prize at ceromony in Berlin Jult,2002.
Designed by Engelen Moore, there were more than 300 projects from 45 countries. It won because of its excellence in contemporary design. It had a difficult site and it showcased environmental design.

Its also the only highrise flats in Oz that allow any type of pet!! The units are large and balconies are huge !

TOCC October 22nd, 2003, 10:33 AM i really like this one... the rendering showing the yellow side of the building kind of looks like one of the buildings from Docklands...
should give a fresh look to the area

finn December 3rd, 2003, 09:58 AM I be liking this tower's design very muchly!!! :D
It's cool to see the variety that is starting to emerge in the new GC towers, after decades of strikingly similar balconied concrete boxes!
This tower is not too different to that type of tower...it's just like it's surrounding towers, only with style and a bit of flair! Especially that bold yellow section on the Western side!
CULWULLA December 3rd, 2003, 10:53 AM yeah this one will be one of my favs! clean lines, sleek..
SydneyDude January 17th, 2004, 02:17 AM great tower! Right near where i stay when im up there. Hopefully a renovation of the oasis shopping centre will come with this development.

latest news!!! Air has sold out!!!!
The 40storey Air on BB has sold all 133 units reacing $100mil in sales.Average price of a unit-$732,ooo and ranged from $350,000-$2mil.
Mark Jewell from THAKRAL says "people like the fact that the ocean view can never be built out and also convience having a shopping centre beneath!
Builder Barcleay Mowlem has just completed a transfer slab above Oasis which will support the tower. it measures 70m long x 16m wide x beams 2.5m deep!
TOCC February 11th, 2004, 02:20 PM woah look at the size of that podium.. years ago it was obsurd to have shopping centres under building on the GC. Now there popping up all along the strip.
I think there is a few in surfers and two in coolongatta with shopping centres underneath them

The G.C. July 8th, 2004, 02:53 AM Looks like the building is going along well
Will be an excellent building once everything is complete. Excellent position and a well designed building to top it off.
Macca-GC July 29th, 2004, 09:46 AM Anyone got some construction pics?

better believe it!
defec8R August 23rd, 2004, 09:32 AM Brilliant brilliant photos defec8r. Did you take them yourselfThanks, yeah the light was just right. Actually I shrunk them a fair bit, to reduce file sizes just in case anyone is still using dial-up.
MrTall August 23rd, 2004, 02:25 PM Great photos, but not a great building. Front facade looks 70's style and the diagonal escape stair windows look 60's. That podium is looking positively shocking. Probably the worst design of any UC scraper on the coast.
citiboy September 9th, 2004, 02:27 PM just a note -- the grand mercure hotel at the other end of the oasis from air
on bb is going to change name to sofitel gold coast and be a 5 star hotel .the first
5 star hotel in about 10 years.renovations will be completed next march at $20 million
plus $8 million to be spent on the retail component.the lobby area will be started
before the end of december. thakral was going to get rid of the hotel but because of
the pickup in travel and the convention centre it will keep and up grade it.
MrTall September 9th, 2004, 02:56 PM Isn't Palazzo 5-star?
citiboy September 10th, 2004, 09:46 AM no its the only 6 star hotel in australia

The G.C. September 21st, 2004, 12:57 PM They are going to be standing in the ocean soon. Could they have been any further away
GMAC September 23rd, 2004, 03:30 AM Saw this for the first time last weekend and love it. Sure it has elements of 60s and 70s apartment blocks but this one is going to be all class. Broadbeach is going off at the moment with some really nice buildings and this is no exception. Its also just what the shopping centre and street mall needed, there has always been lots there but its now getting the people to give it a really nice personality.
CULWULLA October 4th, 2004, 02:03 PM heres a render which gives you a great idea what its going to look like.>

MrTall October 4th, 2004, 02:14 PM Ooh. That makes it look a little more promising than the actual construction photos. I still can't understand why it's taking such a long time to build!

The G.C. October 16th, 2004, 03:09 AM Don't suppose anyone has any updates or pictures of this project.
CULWULLA November 1st, 2004, 12:00 AM yes any recent pix would be noice!! its been a month.hehe
kwigibo November 1st, 2004, 01:46 AM I lent my camera to my sister for her 5 week jaunt around europe, 'nother couple of weeks and I'll get back to you.
defec8R November 6th, 2004, 11:03 AM This tower is in a nice spot, across the road from the Life Saving club and the park...

The G.C. November 6th, 2004, 12:02 PM Nice one defec, its nice to finally have an update. Looks as though things are moving along nicely now with them being up to the 23rd, starting to get some height. It's quite a different colour with the sun not shining on it too.
Danubis November 6th, 2004, 12:10 PM does it have one level of office space at the bottom?
CULWULLA November 6th, 2004, 12:25 PM wow, thanx defec.looks 25 levels high to core.
looking cool.
The G.C. November 6th, 2004, 07:22 PM does it have one level of office space at the bottom?
Do you mean the more white bit behind the trees there, thats got 5 2 storey sky homes in it. They range from 221m2 to 571m2
CULWULLA November 23rd, 2004, 12:20 PM theres a ful page on this project in this weeks bulletin. the large pic was taken this week and its says its reached lev26.(Ill scan tommorrow) The article mentions how Air is "minimalistic" architecture.Thakrals director says its clean, smart lines meant Air stood apart from others. All 133 apartments were sold by jan2004.The environmental design is now being admired by all.The success of Air has prompted Thakral to commit to a second Broadbeach tower , one which will also be minimalistic in appearance.Thakral has bought ULTRA and starts construction in dec!!
wow if only Thakral was allowed to build City one in Sydney.

Macca-GC December 18th, 2004, 03:50 PM How many floors is it up to, and how many does it have left?
How good would it be if Thakral decided to do a similar long, skinny tower, on the block to the south of The Oasis We could sort of create a wall.
The G.C. December 20th, 2004, 12:39 AM They are just about to start the 27th of 36 going by the latest pic.

MrTall January 18th, 2005, 04:03 PM This building's construction rate is a F*****g joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!

13 levels in 16 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1 floor every 5.5 weeks.
Adam BK January 18th, 2005, 04:13 PM 1993? ok you mean thats how old the shopping centre is?
Macca-GC January 18th, 2005, 04:37 PM I can understand the lower parts of the building taking a while, but there's no excuse why it's taking so long

They were 8 levels above podium 18th september 2004. They had only just done the first few levels in April last year. They have been going at about a floor a week the last few months.I would work it out to be 13 levels in 4 months, taking into consideration the shutdown time is a floor a week
Macca-GC January 20th, 2005, 02:01 PM Oi, but it's understandable why the lower floors would take a while:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v175/kwigibo/aironbb.jpg

CULWULLA January 24th, 2005, 12:50 AM fantastic! thanks for updates defec. looking good.
theres now 22 levels above podium and when completed it will have 30 above podium. so 8 to go!
how tall does Q1 look in background? wow
MrTall January 25th, 2005, 11:25 AM Great shot. This one will be huge for Broadbeach when it's done.
I also want to comment on the ugly power lines! These make this place look awful. The sooner they sink then underground the better (doubt whether that'll ever happen though).

There don't seem to be any in front of Air - Thakral must have forked out to have them undergrounded.

The G.C. March 17th, 2005, 05:13 AM Nice pics, only 3 floors to go now
CULWULLA March 17th, 2005, 05:29 AM excellent firefly! i was wondering how this was going. should be finished in a couple of months.
CULWULLA March 20th, 2005, 09:40 AM did anyone tune into the Australian surf champs today at Kurrawa beach? i love watching because i actually compete myself in local and state sufchamps . it was awesome 10ft surf today for finals.
great perve PLUs great perve on skyscrapers in background /lol
the Kurawa beach happens to be right in front of Air on BB. its looking great . really imposing.
fireflymairi March 22nd, 2005, 12:02 AM Culwulla when I took those pics the surf carnival was actually underway - its gets crazy on and around that beach at this time of year! Could hardly move for all the people and equipment around the place..
CULWULLA March 22nd, 2005, 12:05 AM ^ yes, its a nightmare.i live in Umina Beach and we just held the State champs which is a lead up to Australian champs. We had it for 2 weeks and the pop of Umina doubled for that period. but it was best carnival for many years. all went well.
thanks again!
BrizzyChris March 22nd, 2005, 01:29 AM I watched it...Air looked great!
RADULA March 22nd, 2005, 06:21 PM Its such a shame that the gc will lose the surf carnival after next year. I think it goes to perth or coffs harbour, qld didn't put in a high enough bid for it. If the australian surf lifesaving championships should be held anywhere it should be on the gold coast!
CULWULLA March 22nd, 2005, 11:37 PM ^ yes i agree but it also should be shared just like the state carnivals each year.I reckon WA will be over the m00n getting the champs. but yes the surfers pd stretch is awesome.

CULWULLA March 29th, 2005, 06:08 AM great miss fly!
yes that brown board is perculiar?.
The G.C. March 29th, 2005, 11:41 AM They are permanent, they are adjustable shutters to help block out the sun and heat in summer. They will be put on all the western side of the tower, and some on the eastern
BrizzyChris March 29th, 2005, 02:25 PM It looks gross but cool. Very strange.
Danubis March 29th, 2005, 03:43 PM simply awful.
fireflymairi March 30th, 2005, 01:23 AM Hmm I dunno about that.. will they be painted, or at least made to look a bit consistantly coloured/textured? Looks a bit construction-y to be part of the finished building in my opionion...
Muse March 30th, 2005, 02:42 AM Engelen Moore do have a thing for shutters and blinds. Here is an example of their 150 Apartments in Sydney. Guess they know what the occupier permanently needs and wants in the way of light control.

BrizzyChris April 26th, 2005, 04:46 AM When I was down the coast on the weekend, I had a good look at those shutters on Air. They are actually stainless steel. The brown stuff will be ripped off when it's finished. I think it will look great when it's done.
GMAC April 26th, 2005, 05:39 AM Thank God for that!!!!
Oriolus April 27th, 2005, 05:10 AM Yeh that should look a bit better . But I find it weird how they're only up the bottom half of the tower - if Engelen Moore felt it was so important for shutters to block out the sun then they should be up the full length. I mean even in stainless steel they probably wont look as good as the normal facade IMO. Have to wait & see.
And this is pretty funny - check out this render with the convieniently placed sign at Oasis next door to hide those shutters. lol

I've never seen a render with yellow facade on the back but looking again at firefly's pic - what is that yellow on the lower left floors - a sign of things to come??!!
http://www.cmrdesign.net/towers/air-on-bb-16-03-2005.jpg
I reckon yellow would look pretty cool actually :)
CULWULLA April 29th, 2005, 12:39 AM we need more colours in highrise bldgs!! especially GC! no more non descript white bldgs. a splash of colour is good.
it reallybrings the bldg to life.
heres the Distillery Tower in prymont.

Oriolus April 29th, 2005, 01:27 AM I love those Distillery Towers. Still they probably wouldn't go well in the Sydney CBD would they? - colours like that only belong in certain places but GC is definately one of them. It could do with some more buildings deviating from off white/light grey IMO. Bring on the yellow.
And Distillary and Air both have sun shades :)

Oriolus April 29th, 2005, 08:14 AM lol yeah it was ME that posted it Sunni :) I meant that THAT was the first time I'd seen the yellow render. Looking again at it I don't think that render has the shutters - they should just project above the Oasis sign and be visible on the side as well. It's probably an old design.
CULWULLA April 29th, 2005, 08:32 AM sunni- exterior paint these days is very tough! yes it might need a repaint but thats evry 10 years or so.

Towers seem to get to this stage really quickly, then just sit there and look the same for ages! I guess all the activity is going on within the building, so it's visually progressing on the inside and not so much the exterior.
defec8R June 6th, 2005, 10:04 PM ^ Unlike humans, seagulls are always cool about being photographed  (apart from one glaring at me, but I don't mind that in a gull)

GMAC June 7th, 2005, 04:26 AM Yay to the shutters coming off!!! Are they painting it yellow, or is it yellow cladding that has that protective film peeling off?

CULWULLA July 12th, 2005, 01:18 PM yeah its one of the great towers in GC. The thing is with Engelen Moore designs is that there interiors are exceptional.
The G.C. July 14th, 2005, 11:09 AM Well I am liking the front, am looking forward to seeing how it ends up in regards to shutters etc.

CULWULLA August 5th, 2005, 12:19 AM excellent. really quality project. englen moore is such a innovative firm. there bldgs tend to be put emphasis on functionality rather then looks. This tower apparently has amazing interiors and spacious rooms ect.

Locke September 26th, 2005, 02:35 AM Thanks fireflymairi, I actually really like that yellow and the pattern on the back wall, makes it a bit different.
CULWULLA September 26th, 2005, 02:37 AM make sure you put them on Emporis ff!! brilliant!
yes the yellow is nice. those patterns are actually window shades for the balconies behind.
cheers

CULWULLA September 26th, 2005, 02:39 AM great!
you see the shades i was talking about locke!
The G.C. September 26th, 2005, 03:55 AM Great pics firefly. Still some work to be done on the left hand side by the looks. Looks good though.
MrTall September 26th, 2005, 04:36 AM Hmmm, not sure about this one. From some angles it looks kinda cool, but from most it looks like it could've been built in the early 70's.
CULWULLA September 26th, 2005, 04:48 AM Architects englen moore are very much into "interiors" and basic design. There apartments are incredibly spacious and cater for large families. The 22storey ALTAIR atop Kings Cross tunnel in Sydney doesnt look much but was voted worlds best apartment tower in 2002 archiTecTure awards.

fireflymairi September 26th, 2005, 06:28 AM Yep Cul I have put all the latest ones up on Emporis, what a massive job though!
I'm still to decide if I like this building, its a bit different so I admire it for that, but I think I prefer the glassy look. Would be great to see inside these apartments though.
CULWULLA September 26th, 2005, 06:39 AM ^ yeah definately worth to have a look inside. let me know if you do.
The G.C. September 26th, 2005, 06:56 AM They are very nice inside. Very modern and minimal with a good quality of finishes with big living areas and the views are incredible.

BrizzyChris October 18th, 2005, 03:02 PM Love the front, meh about the back.
CULWULLA October 18th, 2005, 03:03 PM very sleek design. so sharp. Engelen moore are excellent.
thanks again ff!
fireflymairi October 19th, 2005, 12:33 AM There was a feature recently on Today Tonight (or one of those kinds of shows) about the yellow on the back of the building. They were interviewing some local residents and most of them said it was an eyesore, but some loved it. Can't please everyone I guess! Apparently the yellow was inspired by the yellow and red flagged patrolled areas on the beach - just glad they didnt do the red as well! Personally I think good on them for doing something different and making it a talking point, rather that making it look just like every other high rise apartment building on the Gold Coast.

Locke October 23rd, 2005, 03:37 PM The`big fish finger' gives Broadbeach new air of vibrance
The Gold Coast Bulletin.
WHAT is tall, slim and has a yellow rear that has its creators glowing with satisfaction?
It's Broadbeach's newest apartment tower, Air on Broadbeach, which is on the verge of completion. The 36-level building, which overlooks the ocean at the eastern end of the Oasis shopping centre, has always been intended by developer Thakral Holdings to be a `vibrant addition' to Broadbeach.
And the bright yellow paint job on the western side certainly is `vibrant'. Some might say it looks like a giant fish finger.
Thakral chief John Hudson says the company commissioned Sydney architects Engelen Moore to design a tower that would be a landmark.
He believes Air, aided by its designers' big yellow inspiration, has more than fulfilled that ambition.
And some top-name architects agree.
David Brown, who heads the Sunland Group team that designed the Q1 tower, says Air's yellow western side makes it like a piece of art rather than `just a building'.
Barry Lee, design director at the globally active Gold Coast- based DBI Design, predicts that Air will one day become heritage listed.
Engelen Moore's Ian Moore said he saw the yellow wall in its entirety for the first time last week and was over the moon.
"It looks even better in reality than it did in drawings or computer images," said Mr Moore.
"We think the whole building looks fabulous."
Mr Hudson says he believes Air takes architecture to a new level.
"The tower really stands out with its yellow western side, but we believe the colour is in character with the bright, exciting image of Broadbeach," said Mr Hudson.
"Some people will love the yellow and some will hate it, but anything that is `fresh' or cutting edge often is controversial.
"Thakral is the biggest investor in Broadbeach, owning the Oasis and the Sofitel Hotel which look directly at the back of Air.
"If anyone was going to be compromised by the yellow Air rear it's us, but we think it's just fabulous."
DBI Design's Mr Lee admits his prediction of an eventual heritage listing for Air is `a big call'.
Now you know what the experts say, judge it yourself
