I was in India for about 15 days and went around Delhi and Nagpur. It felt great to be back in the motherland and see all the development first hand that we've discussed here at SSC.

This thread is the second thread in the Passage to India series. You can check the Passage to India 2006 trip here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=378712). The title is inspired by the book Passage to India written by EM Forster and a song by the same title by a California based desi band - Karmacy.

We landed around 0030 hrs at IGI, Delhi. The airport interiors (as expected) have greatly improved since I was last there.

Waiting in the immigration line wasn't a pain even with the 400+ other people that were in my flight. I was in it for about 5 mins and I got my passport stamped in abt 1 minute. I retrieved my luggage in another 5 minutes and was out of the terminal. Outside there were 4-5 cranes working at the T3 site and the terminal access road was lined with the airport express rail barricades.

Great pics IU. Hope to see more of them soon.

After about 9 years of living/working in Europe and then in US, motherland calls! So next month I'll be moving back to India. And Delhi it will be.

Though I discovered SSC fairly late (Feb this year), all these pics and the discussions on SSC forum are giving me a fair idea of what's in store for me!

Nikon E3200 ;) ^^

My dad got that cam for me from the states in 2004 when it had just been launched. The camera is obsolete now so I am thinking of buying a new one. Any suggestions for a decent >6MP P&S camera?

sn1101, I had fantastic time in Delhi and Nagpur. Did some really crazy things during my stay that I wouldn't like to mention here. :) There's construction going on everywhere in NCR and people are eagerly..actually more or less desperately looking forward to 2010.

The nightlife scene has exploded and people are spending money on luxury items and electronic gadgets like never before. My Nokia 6100 mobile phone looked archaic compared to the sleek ubercool multifeature phones used by my buddies. I guess it's time to upgrade my phone as well.

MxC, All the best with your R2I. The first thing that'll hit you is the number of people at the airport ;) but that'll quickly sink in..atleast it did for me. If you're loaded with dough then you can live life king sized like a dilli billi. You can hire a driver, maid, guard et al for about 5-6 grand each. Driving around the city has become much more smoother but you'd encounter minor traffic jams here and there due to the flyovers, metro lines u/c. The longest I ever waited in a jam was on Aurobindo Marg for about 15 mins where line 2 of the metro is u/c. Which part of the city do you plan to move into?

well, cant really say if its going to be permanent but its going to be for a long period, thats for sure.
for me one of the main reasons is to spend time with family again, something that i have missed for the past 10 odd years.
it makes a lot of sense professionally as well, the gaming industry in india is really starting to pick up and the money is, well, really good. so i believe, its a good time to grow with the industry. lots the work from 'round the world is being outsourced to india(the company i am working for right now is outsourcing to india!) and so one has a lot more options.
kinda gives me a chance to give back to the industry in india, share the knowledge i have gained here and in canada.

i have to say with the money thats in the hands of people in india, they do end up having the latest gadgets. the last time i was in india, i kinda felt the same way you did! got an n95 as soon as i could upgrade :)
its kinda nice to see the changes happening in the country rather than just read about it, isnt it. when you walk around the city, you can actually see the progress that has happened, which is kinda nice. long way to go still, i admit, but it seems like we on our way.

Moving as in permanently moving back.

What is the reason for your decision if you dont mind sharing.
i will move back too but not in near future.
thanks in advance

Well there are a lot of reasons. Primary one is that when I'd left India at the beginning, I had been more or less clear in my mind that I didn't wanted to become a permanent NRI . Also there is enough happening in India for which you would like to be a first person witness, and a participant in your own ways wherever you can.

Thanks for that warning ;). I know as much as you prepare in advance, the reverse cultural shock is bound to hit you!

I don't know yet where I will stay. I don't belong to Delhi, so no particular preferences. However I know I'll be working in Gurgaon. So school for kids and my home has to be not too far. I've been thinking between Gurgaon/Dwarka actually. Any insider tips or info abt ppl who can help for finding good school and not so pricey apts will be most welcome here! I don't know much about the RE prices/schools in Gurgaon so I suggest that you join this gurgaon scoop community portal --> http://gurgaonscoop.com/ Other NRIs/local people will gladly answer all your questions. Do however double check the info from other sources though.

well, cant really say if its going to be permanent but its going to be for a long period, thats for sure.
for me one of the main reasons is to spend time with family again, something that i have missed for the past 10 odd years.
it makes a lot of sense professionally as well, the gaming industry in india is really starting to pick up and the money is, well, really good. so i believe, its a good time to grow with the industry. lots the work from 'round the world is being outsourced to india(the company i am working for right now is outsourcing to india!) and so one has a lot more options.
kinda gives me a chance to give back to the industry in india, share the knowledge i have gained here and in canada.

thats a win win situation man. i wish my company had office in India. you gotta go to India for a while to recharge your batteries. plus it will do good to India too.

Are you moving to Delhi, or somewhere else?

Moving as in permanently moving back.

Well there are a lot of reasons. Primary one is that when I'd left India at the beginning, I had been more or less clear in my mind that I didn't wanted to become a permanent NRI . Also there is enough happening in India for which you would like to be a first person witness, and a participant in your own ways wherever you can.

you know when i went to India for the first time i saw a huge line in front of immigration line for foreigners. it crossed my mind that it will suck if i have to enter as a foreigner in our own country. i decided that no matter what i will keep my citizenship.
good luck man.

Vishnu, that's pretty much same mantra I've been living by in the States.

cncity, true that. The buying power has increased phenomenally since I last went there in 2006. The demand for gadgets, luxury cars, items, accessories has skyrocketed and mall developers are building plush malls to cater to big Indian and International retail chains. Later on, I'll post some pics of Vasant Kunj where 3 malls including a luxury one (DLF emporio) and an office building are just about to open.

sn1101, Noida is a great place to live in. I visited it after 5 years and despite it being in the news for all the wrong reasons (Nithari and Aarushi), I'd choose living there over Gurgaon if you consider living in the NCR. Noida happens to score higher than Gurgaon in IU's infra development ratings.

Cov boy, There's some sort of collaboration between Select group and other retail developers like DLF, MGF etc to develop the whole complex.

MGF group runs one wing of the mall - the one from which I took those pics. Here's an image from MGF's website (http://www.mgfindia.com/metropolitan_saket/index.html). You can even see one of the new buildings u/c at the back. It could be DLF's south court mall.
http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/1261/mgfwj0.jpg

DLF is actually building 2 malls there and not 1.

1. South Court - From the render, it looks like the design would be similar to what we saw above.
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/2072/dlf2ih5.jpg

Description from DLF's website (http://dlf.in/wps/portal/retail?jspName=the_courtyard/overview.jsp):
South Court is strategically located in the Saket District Centre situated on the Press Enclave Marg and behind Hotel Marriott Welcome Group. With a total built up area of 400,000 square feet of which 250,000 suare feet is dedicated to retail, this complex is slated to become one of the largest retail hubs in South Delhi.

South Court is the only mall in Saket to have a 2-anchor store advantage with Lifestyle and Landmark retail outlets accounting for 90,000 square feet and 55,000 square feet of space, respectively.

2.The Courtyard - I think this is the wing on the right side in the overview picture.
Render:
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/6606/thecourtyarddlfsaketimgqh0.jpg

Description from DLF's website (http://dlf.in/wps/portal/retail?jspName=the_courtyard/overview.jsp):
One of the finest and largest retail-cum-commercial complexes in New Delhi, The Courtyard is strategically situated in the Saket District Centre situated on the Press Enclave Marg and behind Hotel Marriott Welcome Group. The location is such that in addition to the crowd from Saket, it attracts a large number of visitors from neighboring and affluent colonies like GK I and II, C.R. Park, Sainik Farms, Haus Khas, Panchsheel Enclave and Malviya Nagar. The total built up area of the mall is 600,000 square feet of which 400,000 square feet is dedicated to retail with the remaining space allotted for commercial and hospitality industries. The parking area includes both surface and basement parking, sufficient for accommodating up to 1,200 cars.

This is what I think the layout of the whole place is like -

another nice update IU. love the first aid instruction board. thank god they wrote that in hindi. your camera is awesome. pics are very clear. if you are buying another one then make sure it has image stabilizer in it, it will help you take clearer pics while moving.

delhi looks very green. i do need to whine though...

first... our public just feels it insulting to walk on pavement. :( govt should just demolish the sidewalks and extend the roads, atleast janta will get more room to walk.

second... sinage is too cramped and non standardized..

third. i hate the stripes on everything on the side of the road. its painful to paint, hard to maintain and doesnt even look pretty.

alright... whining over :)

Vishnu, yeah I took a ride on line 3 from CP to the Dwarka More station that I'll post about next. I took some pics candidly without using the flash so as to not get into any trouble like I did last time. There's nothing extraordinary in them and they're quite similar to the ones posted on flickr. I recorded a couple of videos as well.

those were nice pics of inside too. DM is pure beauty in simplicity. they didnt make it too flashy to save cost but yet they managed to give it a grace and decency. this is the perfect kind of metro we can afford. as long as they keep it clean and maintain it well , it will always be the best infrastructure project of India.

i dont understand the rationale behind the ban on taking pics though. people are proud of their metro so govt should let them take pics . there are millions of pics already on the internet. atleast after the ban is lifted we can get more artistic and better pics..

^ Can you suggest any descent P&S camera?

Regarding taking pics in the DM, I never really understood the rationale behind banning photography as well. The stations (atleast the elevated ones) all look alike on both levels and are already well documented on the internet. Miscreants/terrorists would gain little insight if they plan to document it before carrying out an attack. I can't think of any other metro system where it's banned. The MTA here in NY tried pushing for one in 2005 but it got bogged down due to public pressure. Maybe photographers/photo-journos all over Delhi need to do the same.

As I said before, It rained for about 20 mins. From CP I then went to see Humayun's tomb. a final look at the tomb

Wow, the safdarganj tomb looks great, and surprisingly well maintained :uh:

Then I came back to CP.

The renovated C block -

As for CP, the renovation looks quite great. I saw another of your pics which showed a comparison of the renovated area vs. the non-renovated part, and it looked great! After the work is completed, I guess it should be able to reattain its rightful place as a prominent and enjoyable landmark of Delhi.

Zhiemi, the AIIMS interchange looks amazing from the AIIMS building. I remember Suncity had once posted a shot of it. Will try to dig it out.

I guess I don't make much sense, but suppose the view of the interchange from the AIIMS building is the horizontal view, I feel the vertical view from a high platform or from the sky would be more beautiful.

Regarding the camera, no worries.

Thanks :)

A new FOB with an escalator-
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6333/dscn9240zd5.jpg

The escalators on the FOBs show how lazy and demanding the pedestrians are. "Hey, we want escalators on the footbridges, otherwise, we'd rather jaywalk!" The things the govt do to lure us :D

I've seen ad boards in the metro stations encouraging people to take the stairs instead as it is the healthier way :okay:

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

IU, you took some really wonderful shots of the roads. I don't think the greenery laden roads will ever cease to appeal me no matter how many times I've plied on them or how boring a place they are leading me to. Your pics also showed much more construction is going on in Delhi than I had in mind. Thanks again!

Escalators are not necessarily for lazy people. While lazy people will indeed use them, it would be very beneficial for those with medical problems that creates a challenge for them to climb up and then come down stairs. However the question is that will they be working all the time? (means maintenance!)

Well said, I agree here. I appears that Delhi is much more greener than what many would think and would like us to believe.

Marathaman, Hindustani, Zhiemi - NP folks

MxC, the caption of the pic you quoted is of Humayun's tomb. Nonetheless I agree, the tomb is pretty well maintained.

Regarding the renovated c-block, it indeed looked fan-f00kin-tastic compared to the other blocks. The corridor infront of the shops now sports rich marble flooring. CP is very well on its way to attain its past and rightful glory. I Just hope the DUAC doesn't stall the renovation of the other blocks.

Zhiemi, Yeah a vertical view of it would be awesome. I noticed that the ATC has changed the flight pattern of planes now. Planes now fly right over the Ring Road and above the interchange but due to the angle you can't see the interchange below. Sigh

Regarding the FOBs, installing escalators on them is the best way to woo the public, lazy or not.http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/9573/w1ct4.gif

^^Lol, ridiculous indeed.

Escalators are not necessarily for lazy people. While lazy people will indeed use them, it would be very beneficial for those with medical problems that creates a challenge for them to climb up and then come down stairs. However the question is that will they be working all the time? (means maintenance!)

Oh yeah, I didn't have that in mind. Sorry, my bad. Escalators are certainly a boon for the medically unfit. But like you pointed out, proper maintenance is a doubt.

Zhiemi, Yeah a vertical view of it would be awesome. I noticed that the ATC has changed the flight pattern of planes now. Planes now fly right over the Ring Road and above the interchange but due to the angle you can't see the interchange below. Sigh

That's too bad. Thanks for the info anyway.

It looks like you were following that woman around there^^^^
LOL
Just Kidding.
Nice Pics however. Boy delhi looks like a true metro.
Nagpur still has some time to go.
I have one question: in many cities' outskirts there have been skyscraper projects proposed, for example, the unitech grande. Why can't there be projects or skyscrapers actually be built in the city for the purpose of commerce, business, offices, etc?
I know unitech grande is a residential park, and so is lanco hills in Hyd, but skyscrapers look much better in a city than in a suburb.
Mumbai and delhi will look great with supertalls, while bangalore, chennai, Hyd, Kolkata, nagpur, tirvandrum can have some supertalls and medium height buildings. Excuse my grammar.
Land aquisition is a problem...................................
Whatever we do we shouldn't do it forcefully.

I am a mumbaite, staying in usa now.

I have to acknowledge one fact here....Delhi Roads are far far far much better than mumbai.
Delhi roads much cleaner than mumbai. the dividers are painted, the greenery is maintained and the road marks/displays are also well laid out.

I can say this of Delhi-Gurgaon-Noida too...beautiful landscapes and roads.
and now metro to add to this.

Wow...Keep up Delhi...

Mumbaites, please learn from Delhi and do something to improve our Standard.

ImBoredNow, commercial skyscrapers haven't come up in Indian cities including Mumbai in a big way since they require and put a lot of burden on the supporting infrastructure. Sprawling custom built campuses that are used by the IT and R&D companies in the burbs have their own set of problems but as we can see, they're preferred more. Population displacement, height restrictions, land acquisition, PILs that follow and land prices are other factors that make builders shy away from developing towers inside cities.

powai_mumbai, bad leadership, different priorities and a total lack of vision are the characteristics that distinguish the authorities of Mumbai from those of Delhi. It's painful to read about the ridiculous proposals and about turns made by the MH govt, MMRDA and others that's hindering the infra progress of the city.

MxC, naah I didn't didn't check it out. The machine did work, I remember seeing a guy infront of it.

Zhiemi, Nagpur's roads are great even though it lies in the least developed part of the state. No, that doesn't mean that it has been sucking all the money meant for the surrounding areas ;). The local municipal corp and pwd have done a great job developing and maintaining the roads and sidewalks.
