TYW April 7th, 2003, 03:22 PM the fire-razed state-owned land in Nordin Street Ghaut would be turned into a transportation hub linked to KOMTAR Phase 5, with both to be traversed by the proposed Light Monorail Transit (LMT)
the three LMT routes would cover
-Tanjung Bungah-KOMTAR-Air Itam-airport
-KOMTAR-Jelutong-Air Itam-Farlim
-Penang Islang-Butterworth
the federal government have given the green lightfor the LMT proposal and agreed to fully or partially subsidise the capital cost
there is more news about other stuff in that news but is not concerning LMT so i didn't include it, i would have included it if i can find this piece of news

baqthier April 9th, 2003, 05:35 PM great news! I hope Penang will be best connected
Pablo September 2nd, 2003, 05:59 PM Penang, Malaysia. When Malaysians decided to build their own monorail system for Kuala Lumpur, they changed transit in their country forever. The country is moving forward with plans for a second Malaysian monorail system in the capitol city of Putrajaya, and now will likely build another monorail for the Island of Penang. Work is expected to begin on the Penang Monorail in early 2004. Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon states that completion of the system will be in 2007. Two companies have submitted proposals for the project, using the "Made-in-Malaysia" system that is cheaper to manufacture than competing systems from Japan, North America and Europe. The proposal is for a link from George Town with Bayan Lepas in the south to Tanjung Tokong in the north. Dr Koh said the Penang Monorail would be a smaller version of the Kuala Lumpur monorail. The island has only about 600,000 people compared to Kuala Lumpur's four million.
ethan September 2nd, 2003, 06:29 PM wow....great news for Penang!!!!!
szehoong September 3rd, 2003, 11:54 AM Thats REALLY good news! Smaller?!?! I think the monorail size of KL is perfect for Penang.........remember.....not only the Penagites on the island would ride em......tourist.....people from the mainland etc, could make a sizeable portion of the crowd. ;)

No ciites are at its optimum. KL is DEFINITELY not at its optimum. Each day, more and more people are moving into KL. ;)
As for other states.......it would be the state govt's job to develope the cities. Shah Alam, Klang and PJ for example are under Selangor and had nothing to do with federal's money/
The federal govt allow a certain budget for each state every year. So if the state govt blew it on something else it is not the fed govt's fault.
It is also not the federal govt's fault that many of Penang's projects isn't taking off.....blame it on the NIMBY's, NGOs and the state govt. :)
All the Wilayah Persekutuans are under the Federal Govt therefore it is the Fed govt to take care of em. There is a reason why they call em Federal Territories...... ;)

Most of the money for the buildings etc.... comes from the private sectors. These are the private sector's projects. As for DBKL.....they are making a lot of money so they did not get a lot from the fed govt.......;)
The Federal Govt only spends a lot in Putrajaya. :D

Ijud October 22nd, 2003, 02:38 PM Syed Mokhtar bags monorail deal
MMC Engineering, partner win RM1.1b contract for the 37km system in Penang: report
TYCOON Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary is adding yet another feather to his cap, this time clinching the contract to help build a monorail in the northern island of Penang, the IT manufacturing hub of Malaysia.
This follows the recent announcement that he will undertake the coveted Trans-Asia Rail Grid project in Malaysia.
MMC Engineering (MMCE) and European partner Frazer-Nash have won the RM1.1 billion (S$503 million) contract, according to Reuters yesterday.
The report cited a source as saying that MMCE and locomotive-maker Frazer-Nash outbid rival MTrans Holdings to build and operate a 37km system on Penang island.
MMCE is a subsidiary of Malaysia Mining Corporation (MMC), which is the listed vehicle of Syed Mokhtar. The MMC share price inched up 4 sen to RM2.82 yesterday.
Syed Mokhtar's rail plan in Penang did not come as a surprise. In October last year, MMCE formed a partnership with Impian Jitu, which is believed to be Syed Mokhtar's private vehicle, to bid for urban transportation projects in Malaysia.
Apart from the maiden project in Penang, industry executives said the tycoon is set to spearhead the development of a light rail system in the capital of the southern state of Johor.
Syed Mokhtar has wide-ranging interests in the state next to Singapore.
He controls Senai Airport and two ports - Johor Port at Pasir Gudang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP).
Last week, the Malaysian Cabinet gave the in-principle green light to Syed Mokhtar's MMC and Gamuda to jointly undertake the construction of the Malaysian portion of the Trans-Asia Rail Grid, which will connect Singapore and Kunming in China when completed by 2008.
MMC and Gamuda will double track and electrify the railway line at a cost of RM15 billion - 30 per cent below the bids submitted by two foreign companies.
At the same time, the Malaysian consortium has proposed to privatise Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the 118-year-old national railway company.
A source had earlier told BT that Syed Mokhtar plans to realign the railway track to connect it to his Senai Airport and the two ports in Johor.
The rail project will help complete the plan to turn Senai into a major multi-modal logistics hub.
Another sweetener could be the redevelopment potential of KTM's vast landbank - 12,000 hectares in Malaysia and 200 ha of prime land in Singapore.
However, the redevelopment of the land in Singapore is governed by the disputed Points of Agreement, signed in 1990 by representatives of the two governments.

hm...bout the monorail route. i read it few days ago...the monorail will go through Georgetown, Paya Terubong, Air hitam, Tanjung Bungah, Bayan Baru, gelugor, Sungai Dua and Pulau Tikus:D :D Still on the planning step, i think...
They r planning to built electric tram car in Georgetown right now;)
glenj October 24th, 2003, 05:35 AM Thanks Pablo for the info...
I'm a Penang-born guy working in Singapore currently. Information on development projects in Penang naturally interest me...
I used to live in Tg Bungah, so I'm curious as to whether the monorail will travel from P. Tikus along Tg Tokong before reaching Tg Bungah, because I doubt it will travel along Mt Erskine Rd as the population density along that corridor may not justify such a route :D
Anyway, I've also heard recently that the coastal highway from the Penang bridge now extends all the way into town.. is this true?

well.....there have been plans for a transit / metro system for Penang for decades but not until recently only it is feasible as the island is already choking to its seems.
Furthermore the cost (which had been the main problem) had gone down as the system would be a local one. ;)

Metrail for Penang! (10/21/03)
Penang, Malaysia. Barely a month since we brought you news about Metrail, a new hybrid monorail system with a test track outside Kuala Lumpur, one of the two major partners developing the system has announced that they have been selected to build a monorail system for Penang, Malaysia. According to sources close to the deal, MMC Engineering has a "letter of exclusivity from the government" for a 1.1 billion ringit ($289 million) monorail. MMC and its United Kingdom partner, Frazer-Nash, will start building a starter line sometime early next year. The monorail system is self-propelled and doesn't have the necessity for a power source on the guideway. Penang is Malaysia's key manufacturing hub. The monorail plan calls for a 37 km (23 mile) system.

glenj November 20th, 2003, 10:49 AM It appears there are 2 routes.. Route 1 from Tg Tokong - airport, and Route 2 connecting Komtar - Bandar Baru Air Itam - Paya Terubong crossing route 1 at Air Itam interchange. So, if you want to travel from Tg Bungah to Komtar, looks like you'll have to take the monorail from Tg Tokong to Air Itam (next to MBS) and change to another train to Komtar.. no direct link through Burmah Rd.. wonder if it'll be longer than taking the bus...
szehoong November 20th, 2003, 12:27 PM yea...good news! :okay:

The Trans-Asian Rialway line is an Asian initiative to connect all existing railway line on the borders so that one could have a continous journey from Singapore to Paris.
But the first phase would connect only till Kunming in China. Currently the most comprehensive part of the rail line is from Singapore to Bangkok.......;)
And unfortinately.....there isn't any website that I knew of :(

Pablo December 16th, 2003, 03:45 PM Work on LMT to start soon
Work on the Light Monorail Transportation (LMT) will start soon, said State Local Government, Environment and Traffic Management Committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan.
He said the company undertaking the project was finalising the alignment with the State Government and and Phase 1 work on the LMT was likely to start either in Weld Quay or Komtar.
“We also need to look into where the LMT will be most effective. High density areas such as the UDA housing area in Tanjong Tokong and the township of Bandar Baru Air Itam will be among the areas served by this project.
“Many studies had been conducted as the state does not want to rush into this project. Many aspects such as fares and financial aspects will still have to be considered,” he said after opening the Industrialised Building System Road Show 2003 here.
Under the state's proposal, the multi-million ringgit LMT project would link George Town with Bayan Lepas in the south and Tanjung Tokong in the north.
On another matter, Dr Teng urged the local building industry to try not to depend too much on foreign labour when carrying out their projects.
“The Industrialised Building System (IBS) is something which is not so labour intensive. Projects can be completed 50% to 60% faster with IBS which uses pre-fabricated components.”
He said construction companies should steer away from the “3D” (Dirty, Difficult and Dan-gerous) era and ensure that the building methods used were sophisticated and cost effective.

Ijud January 12th, 2004, 02:40 AM The Star 12/1/2003
BUTTERWORTH: The proposed monorail for Penang is set to materialise as the Federal Government has issued a letter of intent to the company undertaking the project.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the 37km-long monorail project would kick off once all the parties involved had ironed out the problems.
The company, he said, was now negotiating with the state government on the proposed alignment.
“The monorail will link major commercial and residential areas with a 37km-track to overcome traffic congestion on the island.
“We have identified four areas on which monorail lines can be erected and all will be linked to Komtar which is in the heart of the city,” he said after presenting prizes to Indian students who excelled in public examinations organised by the Sri Murugan Centre in Chai Leng Park here yesterday.
It was reported in 2002 that the project would be built at a cost of RM2bil between five and 10 years.
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad expressed enthusiasm when the idea was proposed to him during a state visit in 2002.
Dr Hilmi said the proposed monorail line would be: Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal-Komtar, Tanjung Bungah-Komtar, Air Itam-Komtar, Penang International Airport-Komtar.
He said the monorail would be different from that in Kuala Lumpur and that it would not have any power cable.
This meant that it would be cheaper, he added.
“The coaches would be self-powered via a generator and it is environment-friendly,” he said.
He said the company had been told to find the most suitable alignment for the monorail line to minimise the relocation of people.
“The state government is thankful to the Federal Government for issuing the letter of intent as it shows that it understands the acute traffic problem on the island.”
TYW January 12th, 2004, 10:17 AM Dr Hilmi said the proposed monorail line would be: Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal-Komtar, Tanjung Bungah-Komtar, Air Itam-Komtar, Penang International Airport-Komtar.

TYW February 5th, 2004, 12:26 PM Monorail for Penang, Malaysia. (1/12/03)
Penang, Malaysia.

Alignment of LMT routes identified
By NG SU-ANN
THE Penang Government has identified the alignment of the routes of the proposed Light Monorail Transit (LMT) system which will form the future backbone of the state?s transport system.
State Local Government, Environ-ment and Traffic Management Com-mittee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said the alignment details were expected to be completed soon, adding that it would be integrated with other transport systems including taxis, express buses and public buses.
Under the proposal, the multi- million ringgit LMT project will link George Town with Bayan Lepas in the south and Tanjung Tokong in the north.
Dr Teng said: ?To complement the LMT system, plans have also been drawn up to provide park and ride facilities.
?Land for this purpose has been reserved or identified in Tanjung Tokong, Gat Lebuh Nordin, Air Itam and Gelugor.?
These sites are earmarked as areas for parking cars and as the entry points to the city by public transportation, he told a press conference yesterday.
For example, he said motorists could park theirs car and hop onto a bus or LMT train, adding that construction of the LMT infrastructure would begin next year and would be completed in 2008.
Dr Teng said an efficient public transport system was crucial for Penang in view of the daily high volume of traffic in the state.
With a population of 1.4 million, the state had 1.36 million registered vehicles last year, he said.
He also said 12,700 vehicles used the ferry services daily while 100,000 used the Penang Bridge.
On another matter, he said the Entrepreneurial Development and Co-operative Ministry had issued a licence to a public transport operator two months ago to offer public van services covering satellite villages around Balik Pulau.

The Star, Friday December 3, 2004
PENANG: The proposed RM1.11bil light monorail transit (LMT) project as an alternative mode of public transportation in the state may be scrapped due to its inability to reduce travelling time.
State Local Government, Traffic Management, Information and Community Relations Committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said the state was not satisfied with the travelling time suggested by the project’s consultants.
“We were recently told that it may take about 45 to 50 minutes to travel by monorail from Weld Quay to the Penang International Airport.
“It would also take about the same time, given the necessary time needed at the various stops along the way, for the Weld Quay to Air Itam route.
“So, we are now relooking at the implementation of the monorail project in Penang with regards to its travel time,” he said when chairing the State Local Government Consultative Forum here yesterday.
Dr Teng said the monorail project should be timesaving and worthwhile, noting that 50 minutes was too long a time to get from one end to another on both the routes.
“If travelling by the monorail takes a longer time than travelling by road, then it defeats the purpose of having it.
“Maybe, the monorail could instead be considered for shorter distances within George Town, to help reduce the number of private vehicles in the city,” he said.
In May, Dr Teng had announced the alignment of the LMT routes, which was supposed to form the future backbone of the state’s transport system.
The project, to be undertaken by a Kuala Lumpur-based company, was to have been carried out in two phases.
Phase One is from Weld Quay to Air Itam while Phase Two links Tanjung Tokong, Air Itam, Gelugor and Sungai Nibong to the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.
The monorail alignment was to have been integrated with other transport systems including taxis, express buses and public buses, at a transportation hub to be located at a site now occupied by the Koay Jetty, Peng Aun Jetty and Prangin Estate in Weld Quay.

I think this Weld Quay-PIA involves interchange. But if they said the LMT project perhaps be scrapped due to this reason, i think it is inconvinceable.
Somehow this is a lame excuse, walau, then the purpose of LMT is just ease the commutter from Weld Quay to Airport only? What about other place? Do they ever concern other places in Penang are suffering from road congested?
Anyhow I do agree with them, at least they do think over the journey from one end to another end is really take time, anyhow, LMT is very important and indispensable now.

glenj December 4th, 2004, 03:34 AM Ah they should just replace this monorail thing with a real mass rapid transit system.. After all, by the time the project is finally completed in many years time, Penang's population would have increased further and I'm sure a monorail system, which is suited for inner city travel due to its slower speed, will not be able to handle the passenger volumes.
So who knows, maybe the state planners have in mind a 'proper' rail trnasit system. I'm sure they're not going to abandon the idea of having some form of rail transport as Penang's roads are getting more and more congested by the day :)

TYW December 4th, 2004, 10:33 AM there's something i don't understand in the article. Teng Hock Nan said the monorail was slow. how is it slow?? is it of the speed or is it about the length and the number of stops that makes it slow??
i don't think it is the monorail's speed that is slow but it is the length. if kl's monorail were to connect to KLIA from the city, i'm sure it will be slow as well. if they want a fast link to the airport, they should not have so many stops. that explains why the ERL have very few stops (i guess).

Actually Putraline and Starline isn't 'light rail'. I am not too sure about where or when we are supposed to draw the line but there is a fine line between a light rail and a heavy rail if one is describing KL's 'LRT'.
LRT had different meanings and terms around the world. In Sydney it is trams. In Vancouver it isn't their Skytrain (although Vcr's Skytrain is exactly like KL's Putraline Bombardier Mark II). In Singapore, LRT is no more than something like KLIA's Aerotrain :D .....so you see......our so-called LRT are sandwiched between Singapore's MRT and HK MTR with those of Singapore's Bukit Panjang LRT and Sengkang LRT.
Just for the record, Putraline's capacity is:
Normal - 370 passengers per train (seating 64, standing 306)
Crush - 472 passengers per train
Wheel Chair Seating - 2 per train
If they extend Putraline's carriages to 4 which is the maximum number of carriages the stations could currently handle, a Putraline train could carry 2/3 of Singapore's MRT and HK's MTR. Plus Putraline's ultra-fast frequency of 90 seconds during peak hours does help :okay:
And there is a common misconception that monorails are not a serious transportation solution. KL Monorail broke such streotype as it is one of the widest in its class at 3 metres (just shy of 20cm of Singapore's MRT). Plus its maximum number of carriages is 12 and it would make it longer than the MRT. Its operating speed is similar to any metro system in the world thus it had the potential to even carry more passengers than Starline and Putraline at their maxumum carriage capacity.
Oh and let us all not forget that London's Underground trains are smaller then Putraline and Starline and yet they still carry a crushing amount of passengers everyday ;) So it is the efficiency and frequency of the trains and not the size although having bigger trains does help too :D
As for Penang to plan for its future.....well....I would suggest they invest in Mtran's monorail rather than Metrail cause the latter is so much smaller. But since it is upgradable, I dun see why not too as both are homegrown technology. Whatever it is, Penang would benefit from having an elevated metro system as Penang is very picturesque. Plus all the tunnel boring would just drive up the cost and would damage the foundation of many Penang's heritage buildings. It is also time-consuming.
And I absolutely think it is downright silly to say that monorail is slow because it takes 45 minutes to reach the airport. If that is a dedicated airport link then it is slow. But this isn't and had to stop at many stations. Furthermore most people whom ride the monorail wouldn't be catching any flight lah......there is always the car to consider :D
KJ December 11th, 2004, 02:05 PM Weird..... why they haven't been new updates on the Penang Monorail?? Can everyone tell me what is the route of the monorail??
szehoong December 11th, 2004, 02:05 PM State Government Will Not Scrap Monorail Project, Says Koh
PENANG, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- The state government will not scrap the proposed RM1.1 billion light monorail transit (LMT) project but is asking the developer to redesign the tracks to allow a two-train system to reduce the travelling time.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said Friday the travelling time suggested by the project's consultants for the journey from Weld Quay to the Penang International Airport was too long.
"We did not say that it will be scrapped. We are reviewing to improve the speed because we noticed that the train will stop at every station on the way to the airport and it will take a much longer time," he said.
Speaking to reporters after opening the Tesco hypermarket here, he said the state government had proposed having a two-train system to the airport and the company concerned was working on it.
He was clarifying a media report last week that the state government may scrap the project due to its inability to reduce the travelling time.
State Local Government, Traffic Management, Information and Community Relations Committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan was quoted as saying that the company had suggested that the travelling time by monorail to the airport from Weld Quay would take about 45 minutes to 50 minutes, which was longer than travelling by road.
The project, to be undertaken by a Kuala Lumpur-based company, was to have been carried out in two phases.
Phase one is from Weld Quay to Air Itam while phase two links Tanjung Tokong, Air Itam, Gelugor and Sungai Nibong to the airport in Bayan Lepas.

Anyway to answer your question:
Phase one is from Weld Quay to Air Itam while phase two links Tanjung Tokong, Air Itam, Gelugor and Sungai Nibong to the airport in Bayan Lepas.
:)
KJ December 11th, 2004, 02:07 PM szehoong, can you tell me what is the meaning of two-train system??

szehoong December 11th, 2004, 02:14 PM szehoong, can you tell me what is the meaning of two-train system??
A two-train system is like our Express Rail Link linking KL Sentral to KLIA. ;)
It had two sets of trains - one set is aptly named KLIA Express which goes directly to the airport from KL Sentral while the other, the KLIA Transit stops at all stations from KL Sentral to KLIA (Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya & Salak Tinggi) :)
So the travelling time for KLIA Express which goes straight to KLIA would be around 28 minutes while KLIA Transit would take like about 35mins to reach the airport ( could be more as that is just my estimate based on my own experience ;) )
So the Penang Monorail would have the regular monorails which stops at every stations to service the regular commuters while another set express monorails which goes directly to the airport from Weld Quay ;)
KJ December 11th, 2004, 02:18 PM I see. That sonuds more efficient for me as Penang is always traffic jam. :)

Well.....I must say that only 0.0001% of people that owned car have the same thinking as I do - to take public transportation when heavy jam is anticipated. :D I think most people wouldn't abandon their precious vehicles in place for public tranpostation ;)
And I am a strong advocate of car-pooling .....I sometimes have to 'forced' my friends to hae their cars parked at my place (or that they picked me up) before going anywhere far or downtown. I am not 'kiam siap' as to waste petrol money or carpark money but I think it is very unnescessary for example to drive 3 cars to Bukit Bintang when all of us stayed in Cheras. Most of the time I do the driving and paid for the parking as I really do like to encourage my friends to car-pool.......and as a bonus......I got lotsa company too for the journey ;)
Trust me......when the LMT is completed.....just obseved how many of ya friends wouldn't drive and take the LMT. I doubt they would :D
zchong1022 December 14th, 2004, 04:34 AM I strongly support to Sze Hong, sharing car to downtown, take public transport instead of own-car.....His spirit should be instintc in every one, unless, they do not have a very good public transportation service in their place.
And, I do agree with u too, Sze Hong, soon after the Png LMT is available or commenced, I don't think so much of the people in the Penang will utilize the LMT, but however I hope after some time, more and more people like u will realize how good is the public transport, such as environment friendly, well, perhaps it can also reduce the tranfic consgestion somehow, and it mades the city or town more efficiency etc.
You know why, this is we-Malaysian are encouraged to own or buy car, I think the reason is very clear lar, petrol is subsidized.......for one party sake.
As a Penangite, for the sake of Penang

Report: Extend monorail to Seberang Prai
By ANTHONY TAN
PENANG’s proposed mo-norail needs to be extended to Seberang Prai, according to the Penang Structure Plan (2005-2020) Survey Report which is on public display.
Under the plan’s proposal, the monorail will be linked across the sea from George Town to Butterworth and on-wards to Kepala Batas in the north and Valdor in the south via Seberang Jaya, Bandar Baru Perda and Bukit Mertajam. From Valdor it will go westwards to Batu Kawan.
The report stated that the monorail link from Butterworth to Bukit Mertajam was especially vital as the traffic congestion along this corridor was quite bad.
It said the proposed east-west route of the monorail on the island was from Weld Quay to Paya Terubong via Datuk Keramat and Air Itam.
It had been reported earlier that another route would link Tanjung Tokong, Air Itam, Gelugor, Sungai Nibong and the Bayan Lepas airport while the link to Butterworth would be via an underwater tunnel.
The report said an alternative was a light rail transit system from the proposed public transportation hub in Gat Lebuh Noordin to the Bayan Lepas airport via Batu Uban.
It also said an electric tram service was an alternative public transport which should be considered if it was suitable for the state.

Members of the public checking out the maps on display at the Seberang Jaya public library.
The report said new links that need to be created by building new roads and up-grading existing ones were the Seberang Prai Outer Ring Road from Kepala Batas to Valdor, and the Batu Kawan Ring Road which would pass Nibong Tebal and Simpang Ampat.
It said these ring roads would create a better road network, and support development in east and south Seberang Prai.
Other roads proposed were the Sungai Dua-Tasek Gelugor link, Bukit Tengah-Kulim link and Teluk Air Tawar-Kuala Muda coastal road on the mainland. On the island, the Balik Pulau Ring Road was proposed.
On the ferry service between Weld Quay and Butterworth, the report stated that the introduction of fast ferries such as the hovercraft would be able to reduce congestion at the terminals on both sides.
On proposals to introduce water taxis, it said the service could reduce traffic congestion on the island and be a tourist attraction.
It said they could operate from Batu Maung, Bayan Bay, Pulau Jerejak, Jelutong Water-front, Swettenham Pier, Tan-jong Tokong and Batu Fering-ghi.
The report is on display during office hours until May 24 at Level 3 Komtar, Penang Muni-cipal Council, Seberang Prai Municipal Council, Seberang Jaya library, all five district offices and the Town and Coun-try Planning Department at Komtar's 57th floor.
Those who are interested can attend dialogues and workshops on the structure plan at Dewan Millienium in Kepala Batas at 9.30am on April 30 and Auditorium F 5th floor Komtar at 9.30am on May 14.
TYW April 25th, 2005, 12:10 PM by the sound of it, all those projects can build 5 of the 2nd link bridge!!!!

TYW April 25th, 2005, 12:29 PM BTW, when u wanna go and see that survey?? how about one day we go in the afternoon, and stay back untill evening then, we go up the tower to take pics??
tomkat April 25th, 2005, 02:25 PM The state govt and the federal govt better study this monorail link-up carefully, and if possible to execute the project parallel with the 2nd link. The bridge could be designed to have monorail or train tracks run on its lower level.
For such big system, I have more faith in the conventional LRT or train system than monorail as it is easily expandable.

Magician April 27th, 2005, 06:31 AM Penang may see more IT jobs, investments from MSC IAP event
By Yap Lih Huey
The government hopes to create more information technology (IT) jobs, revive economic development and spur investments in Penang from multinationals (MNCs) by holding the 9th Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) International Advisory Panel (IAP) meeting there from Sept 8-10, the first time it will be held outside Cyberjaya.
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Seri Jamaludin Jarjis said this year’s MSC IAP theme would focus on skilled and high-value job creation, and the shared services and outsourcing opportunities in the MSC Cybercity in Bayan Lepas, Penang, and Malaysia.
He was speaking to reporters in Cyberjaya on April 26 after co-chairing the 9th MSC IAP briefing with Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.
The government’s move to promote Bayan Lepas as a cybercity came following slow investment spending by the private sector over the last two years despite the allocation of incentives such as tax breaks.
Malaysia is also facing fierce competition from Singapore, the Philippines and India when it comes to clinching outsourcing jobs from multinationals. “Spending on the local IT industry has tanked. Just look at Heitech Padu. Things have not gone as they wanted it to be,” said a technology analyst from a bank-backed research house.
“It only makes sense to kick-start the promotion of Bayan Lepas as the majority of the foreign-based MNCs operate from Penang. Hopefully, the effect would trickle down to more investments,” he added.
Last September, the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) launched a new non-profit entity, investPenang, to take over the task of developing Penang’s industrial sector after more than 30 years in the role.
Koh is also lobbying for the Federal Government to allocate between RM6 billion and RM9 billion to the state under the 9th Malaysia Plan although it had earlier requested for RM17 billion.
The funds would be used to promote high-technology industries, which would involve the expansion of Penang Cybercity Phases 1, 2 and 3 in Bayan Baru, Bayan Lepas, Bertam in Kepala Batas and Bandar Cassia in Batu Kawan, which is under PDC.
Koh also said he planned to introduce the Light Monorail Transit System for the island’s metropolitan area, an integrated public bus service programme, smart transport system for the whole state, and the controversial Penang Outer Ring Road, among others.

Report on Structure Plan out for viewing
THE survey report for the Penang Structure Plan (2005-2020) is now ready for public viewing.
Launched yesterday, the report highlights several proposed major infrastructure projects, including the second bridge linking the island and mainland.
In Seberang Prai, the projects include the coastal road from Teluk Air Tawar in Butterworth to Kuala Muda in Kepala Batas and the expansion of the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) and the Mengkuang Dam.
As for Penang Island, major projects proposed are the monorail service in George Town and the Penang Outer Ring Road.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, who opened the exhibition on the survey report at the state library in Seberang Jaya yesterday, said the Structure Plan would be ready in six months.
He said the draft plan would have to go through various stages before it could be tabled at the State Executive Council for approval.
http://penang.thestar.com.my/content/news/2005/4/24/structure.jpg
PLANNING AHEAD: Dr Koh showing a map listing the major projects under the Penang Structure Plan. With him is state Country and Town Planning director Ismail Ibrahim.
Dr Koh added that the survey report was now ready for public viewing until May 24, during which the people could file their views and objections. A special committee would be set up to hear the views.
He said the state government would protect the environment and agriculture sector although the state was facing land shortage.
“Only 30% of the land in Penang has been developed while the remaining 70% are agriculture and water catchment areas,” he added.
The state government has set up eight venues for the public to view the survey report and forms are provided for the public to file their objections.
The public can go to the respective district offices, the Seberang Jaya library, Komtar concourse 3, MPPP and MPSP to have a closer look at the survey report.

MMC Metrail Sdn Bhd, majority controlled by two privately held companies, is in talks with the Federal Government to help implement a RM1.1 billion light monorail transit (LMT) project in Penang, said its chairman Datuk Abdul Kadir Deen yesterday.
Tunas Citra Sdn Bhd and Frazer-Nash hold 40 per cent each in Metrail, while MMC Corp Bhd owns a 20 per cent stake, said Abdul Kadir in an interview with Mail Money.
Frazer-Nash is a UK-based company, while little is known of Tunas Citra or its shareholders. Abdul Kadir declined to reveal much about Tunas Citra, but he did say that the company's role in Metrail is to raise the funds.
“We hope to reach an agreement with the Government as soon as possible. We are hoping that they will subsidise the project, but we are also looking at alternative sources of fundings,” said Abdul Kadir.
He said Metrail is also discussing the technical specifications of the project with the Ministry of Transport on the matter.
“The Government has asked us for a draft concession agreement. The draft will be subjected to an initial agreement on the financial module and the technical specifications,” said Abdul Kadir.
Metrail, which received a letter of exclusivity for the job on Oct 1, 2003, was told to start works on Phase 1A, involving 3.2km, as soon as the financial packaging is agreed, said Abdul Kadir.
In total, the 37km long monorail will link Komtar to Bayan Lepas.

Blabbyboy September 29th, 2005, 08:13 AM this penang monorail is a MAJOR MISTAKE.
szehoong September 29th, 2005, 08:57 AM ^^ And why is that so? :?
Subangite September 29th, 2005, 08:59 AM why is a penang monorail a mistake?
Traffic seems to get worse, the roads seem to get better though. Its about time Penang created its own form of urban rail transport. Its such a pain to get from one part to the other without a car.
szehoong September 29th, 2005, 09:09 AM ^^ I think his concern is the visual pollution ;) But seriously, visually a monorail is the best current tech could offer and underground metros are outta the question as the heritage buildings around the area are very fragile and the soil around the older part of George Town is very soft :(
musang September 29th, 2005, 09:24 AM seattle monorail did not impair the visual scenery of the city.
it is all abt designing the system, i wud suggest gigantic hands holding the track rather than straight boring-looking pillars, hows that like? nails shud be colourfully coloured and each station shud has its own theme, for ex. one station with big opening mouth readily to swallow the incoming trains, while another one looking like a giant millipede etc etc.. nice kan? ha ha..
DW25 September 29th, 2005, 04:28 PM shouldnt jump to conclusion . I mean the least we can do is to give the Penang State Government a chance to improve the overall transportation System. Whether a not the outcome is good or bad , there will be rooms for improvement. SO lets await the arrival news to the commencing date for the LRT construction ... MAN dun U just like Malaysia and this FORUM ...............................................................................

Yes to monorail, but improve public transport first
BY NIK KHUSAIRI IBRAHIM
PENANG: Are Penangites willing to pay more to use the light monorail transportation (LMT) system proposed to ease traffic congestion on the island?
A street poll showed that while commuters do not mind forking out a little extra for a new mode of transport, they would prefer the state authorities to first improve the overall public transport system.
Fauzi Taib, 18, who lives in Butterworth and works at the ferry terminal in Weld Quay, said he would not want to pay more than RM4 for a round trip – which is equivalent to what he usually pays for lunch.
He said the long queues at the bus stops showed that the state government must improve the public transport system.
Fauzi also proposed that the LMT fare be capped at RM2 to make it affordable for all.
To help ease the traffic situation and reduce dependence on private vehicles, the state government has, among other things, proposed a RM1.2bil LMT system for the island.
The proposal, submitted five years back, included the possibility of extending the system to the mainland.
An insurance agent who wants to be known only as Tan said while a monorail was being planned, the immediate task should be to improve bus services.
“The buses are irregular. I find myself wasting precious hours because of the terrible traffic congestion.
“Fridays are the worst because the bus services are almost paralysed as all the Muslim drivers take time off to go for prayers,” said the 24-year-old who lives in Bayan Baru and depends on buses to get around.
Tan said she would support the monorail proposal, but the fare charged should not be more than the current fares for mass transit systems in Kuala Lumpur.
Rosli Rais, 24, an administrative assistant at the National Civics Bureau camp in Balik Pulau, said the LMT would help shorten travelling time but it should not be costly to use.
Asked how much he was willing to pay, he said it should not be “more than RM2 extra”.
“Right now I am paying RM2.50 to commute from the town centre to Balik Pulau,” he said, adding that he would not want to spend more than RM100 on transport monthly.
Cook Mastura Hashim, 59 – who goes by bus from Weld Quay to Bayan Baru for work every day and pays between RM1.50 and RM2 each way – said RM3 would be a reasonable fare to cover the distance on the proposed LMT.
“I have been taking the bus to work all my life. I have witnessed the worsening congestion on the road over the years. Having a monorail in Penang is timely,” she said.
She also reminded the authorities to make the monorail stations friendly to the disabled and elderly.
Blabbyboy September 30th, 2005, 02:48 AM ^^ I think his concern is the visual pollution ;) But seriously, visually a monorail is the best current tech could offer and underground metros are outta the question as the heritage buildings around the area are very fragile and the soil around the older part of George Town is very soft :(
Szehoong is correct. My concern is the visual pollution. It will jeopardize Penang's application for UNESCO World Heritage status, which I think should be the number 1 priority for PP state.
You can read my alternative proposal in the other thread on Penang.: electric tram at ground level (which is similar to the hydraulic cable tram system that was in operation in georgetown at the turn of the century), preferably with no traffic but even with traffic + central georgetown automatic tolling system, also possible. This is the european style and represents world's best practice standard. Recently, when they were doing some road works, they uncovered the original tram tracks!
bobdikl November 3rd, 2005, 06:31 AM Blabbyboy,
Destruction, too often is Malaysia's response to its heritage.
And UNESCO World Heritage is just too far away for short sighted Malaysian to see the privilege and benefits.
globocentric November 3rd, 2005, 11:45 AM anyone who believes that this project will get off the ground is not being realistic.
