Architect : Jean Nouvel - 2OO3-O6

Nouvel was inspired by Minneapolis' industrial past, which is especially evident on the riverfront where the new theatre is located. The circular exterior wall of the thrust stage echoes the round grain silos of the area, and the large rectangle of the proscenium stage evokes the flour mills that were so important to the growth of the city. The structure is clad in dark blue metal, and instead of a traditional marquee, the architect inserted images on steel panels onto the side of the building. They include photographs from past Guthrie productions with actors Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, and George Grizzard.

On top of the building are three programmable LED screens built by Hi Tech Electronic Displays of Clearwater, FL. The screens can broadcast information about productions or images from them. During the theatre's run of The Great Gatsby, the screens showed images of an eye. The tallest of the three “masts” stands 80', and images can rise vertically up the screen like smoke escaping the power plant chimneys across the Mississippi from the theatre. Nouvel also sees them as an answer to the Gold Medal Flour and Pillsbury signs atop the factories nearby.

The new complex is also designed to be inviting to non-ticket holders, incorporating a cantilevered “endless bridge” that juts out 12 stories above the river, with a viewing platform at one end. To reach the observation deck, visitors pass along a corridor with windows cut out to showcase specific views, chosen by Nouvel, and framed in reflective metal.

The new performance spaces were a collaboration between Nouvel, theatre consultants Fisher Dachs, and the Guthrie management, represented by Michael Gross, vice president of design and construction at The Keewaydin Group.

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/4249/gunth000mf5.jpg

According to Gross, an important non-negotiable point for the Guthrie team was the recreation of the original thrust stage designed by the architect Ralph Rapson and designer Tanya Moiseiwitsch.

“The idea was to take all the wonderful things from the old space and replicate them, while addressing ADA issues and updating it,” says Gross. The new Wurtele Thrust Stage replicates the “Alpine Slope” balcony of the original, which comes down to orchestra level. They have retained the multi-colored seats, and the seating remains segmented, although initially, the architect wanted to replace seating sections with concentric rings. Gross says another benefit of keeping the spirit of the iconic stage intact was that the actors were instantly familiar with the space, despite the move to a new building.

Nouvel's biggest gesture is a 175-foot-long cantilevered form that projects toward the river, its end abruptly sliced off at a sharp angle. Viewed from across the river, it looks like a bridge leading nowhere. Yet as you approach the main entrance along Second Street, as most visitors will, the cantilever reads as an extension of a walkway bridge that runs from the theater complex to a parking structure on the other side, an echo of the skywalks found elsewhere in downtown Minneapolis.

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/2404/riveraq1.jpg

The cantilever houses a bar and an outdoor terrace. But its main role is symbolic. In embarking on such a spectacular structural effort for what most would consider a secondary space, Mr. Nouvel is upholding the value of the tangential experiences that are often the most important in life.

Inside, the main 1,100-seat hall, a nod to the liberal Modernism of the 1960's, pays homage to the underappreciated original Guthrie designed by Ralph Rapson with a thrust stage that bridges the distance between the performers and the audience. Seats spill down toward the stage from three sides.
Above, a sweeping balcony is set just off center, giving the room a wonderful edginess.

Mr. Nouvel has also designed a more conservative 700-seat proscenium theater — albeit in an erotic lipstick red that plays off the stiff formality of the space — and a 300-seat black box for experimental work.

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/6325/nightie1.jpg

But the true heart of the building is its connective tissue, like a two-tier public foyer where theatergoers will mingle during intermission. A large window at one end overlooks the area where workers assemble the stage sets; from the other side, people can amble out to the cantilevered bar and terrace.

Here and there, the images of past performances, faint as shadows, are imprinted on the foyer wall, ghosts from the Guthrie's past. But once you drift out to the cantilevered bar, a sense of flux returns. The windows are framed in a mirrored steel that blends city views with refracted images of nearby buildings. In warm weather, a breeze wafts in through a large open window, carrying the scent of the outdoors.

The Guthrie is deeply connected to Minnesota and every Minnesotan's heart. It is a brilliant paradox really: it looks like nothing you've ever seen before, but it's assembled out of parts so familiar they are cliches. It is a truly multifaceted architecture: it manages to stay cutting-edge while taking in its roots in a very fertile soil, which is Minnesota's urban industrial heritage.

In Minneapolis, the Mississippi riverscape is defined by the falls, locks and bridges, and their background of great mills and silos: the very ones that made an impression on Walter Gropius, and later on Le Corbusier, Bruno Taut, Moisei Ginzburg and Erich Mendelsohn, all of whom labelled them icons of modernity.

Situated next to the old Washburn-Crosby A Mill, in the heart of what was once the greatest flour-milling complex, the new Guthrie Theater Center pays homage to its industrial neighbors while capturing the magic of the theater. The exterior is a composition of metal and glass that evokes industrial forms, rendered in a modern way. The large circular form of the thrust theater echoes the area’s adjacent grain silos, while the towering rectangular structure of the proscenium theater is in harmony with nearby flour mills.
At dusk, the exterior walls flicker with the ghosts of great dramatic moments played out on the Guthrie stage. Barely discernible, these urban memories inhabit the facade. They stir in the dark shadows of twilight, when evening descends and the theater comes to life.

...."Performance and entropy are usually more drempt up and get trapped in the mind because of the complexity. I wanted to find something that I could use as a physical example, so I chose the Guthrie, which is a building that is obvioulsy built, and is very dreamy, fictional, and fantastic. It is a very modern style and has many features that define visionary architecture....."

I'm not a professional photographer but here is a photo I took of the Guthrie yesterday. It was very cold when I took this, around -20c.

I really like this building. It is very impressive seeing it in person. It is probably the nicest building built in Minneapolis in the last 10 years. I gave it a 9.5.
