http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=slum+caracas&spell=1
There were many slums at Caracas in the past, but I didn't know there were some still there now. And they are huge.
MMJR January 22nd, 2009, 08:48 PM ^^
Some you're being nice. Take a look at youtube in a video called "Caracas - an informal city"...60% of the city are slums...
Jim856796 October 3rd, 2009, 09:23 PM Rio de janeiro got 2016 Olympics. I just hope there will be several more development projects. I was worried if RdJ has any height limits and I don't know how much of the city is covered in slums MMJR, you said that 60% of RdJ is covered in slums. I just want to know the favela coverage in slum-heavy Rio.
WallyP October 3rd, 2009, 09:49 PM Jim is so worried about Rio....I´m touched.
I don´t know who told you such hilarious thing but, less than 20% of Rio´s pop live in slums.
I think he was saying that Caracas city, in Venezuela has 60% os pop living in slums.. wasnt it?
Jim856796 October 3rd, 2009, 10:27 PM ^^You mean exactly 20%.
Also, since RdJ got the Olympics, a bus rapid transit system will be constructed. Also, Rio's metro system currently has two lines, and four more lines are proposed (Lines 4 & 5 are still on drawing board and haven't been finalised yet).
Atmosphere October 3rd, 2009, 10:51 PM I hope they start soon. Here in Amsterdam it takes more than 10 years to build 1 metroline:ohno:
WallyP October 3rd, 2009, 11:14 PM ^^You mean exactly 20%.
No, its about 16% to 20% of people living in slums..But living in slum doesnt mean that you are so much poor. Unfortunetally people have the worst view about latin america´s slums and sometimes its not so bad as people outside here think it really is.
Anyway, about subway or transit I cant tell you about it cause I really don´t know, but railway in Rio is really huge. Ill find someone who could answer your questions.
gbqtc_matheus October 3rd, 2009, 11:49 PM ^^You mean exactly 20%.

ok, you're right, sorry for bad English, and we sao paulo curitiba, q has a network of transport in development, and extensive, but the Rio could win!^^
WallyP October 3rd, 2009, 11:52 PM wtf? ahahahahahah ^^
Gerardogt October 3rd, 2009, 11:55 PM I've been in Rio on January, i saw the "slums", teh had elecricity, water service, asphalted roads, rio's slums aren't like Indian or African slums.

The Brazilian economy is experiencing a good time and engineering construction are much demanded in all major cities.
I do not know the salaries where you are. In Rio de Janeiro, I believe that its possible to win up $ 60.000 a year. Take into consideration that the cost of living in Brazil is lower.
jasong June 10th, 2010, 03:16 PM Thanks, that's great info. What about the language barrier? In your opinion do you think that I could get by in Rio with just English. until I learn the language? Do alot of the locals speek English?

In general, few people in Brazil speak English. Among middle and upper class the problem is minor.
In Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and other large cities, the scenario is as follows:.
In medium and large companies, at least part of the team will be people who speak English. But generally the language of everyday life will be Portuguese.
Only in large projects is common to use English, because there are often foreign companies participating. Or at the large multinationals, among the top management.
For everyday outside of work can be a little tricky. Usually you'll find people who speak English in hotels, airports, good restaurants and tourist areas. But at the neighborhood´s trade is not common find people who speak English.
jasong June 10th, 2010, 04:24 PM I see. I will have to take a couple classes before I move permanently. I'm also considering RosettaStone.
I moved to Las Vegas, NV in 2004. The economy was booming here, but now in is in a major downturn.

Like all McDonalds stores are franchises in Brazil, we may consider them small businesses. And usually the Mc Donalds in Brazil has no target audience as tourists.
That is the reality of small businesses in Brazil.

Post this question out there that might have better answers.
I suggest that a navigated by it.
Visit the Projects and the regional subforums, where you can see images of Brazilian cities in more detail.
Will have the opportunity to know better what is constructed throughout Brazil, beyond the Rio and Sao Paulo.
In addition to Sao Paulo (19) and Rio(13), the major Brazilian cities are : Belo Horizonte (5,2), Porto Alegre(4,5), Curitiba(3), Salvador(3,6), Recife(3,8), Fortaleza(3,5), Brasilia(3), Goiania(2,3) and Belem(2,5).
* Parenthesis, the approximate population of the metropolitan regions of these cities.

Jim856796 August 2nd, 2010, 08:09 AM Rio de Janeiro plans to clear slums ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games
Slums in Rio de Janeiro are to be cleared and cleaned up as part of a major rebuilding plan ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games, the city's mayor says.
The plan would affect over 260,000 households and would cost over $4.5bn (£2.9bn), Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said.
Hundreds of Rio's favelas will be re-built and 123 of the most "at risk" slums will be torn down.
Approximately 13,000 families in the 123 areas to be cleared would be relocated, Mr Paes said.
The city's slums, built out of corrugated tin, will be replaced with paved neighbourhoods with running water, electricity and gas, according to the plans.
However, the rebuilding will not be finished by the Olympic opening ceremony, as the whole rebuilding plan will take 10 years to complete, Mr Paes said.
So it looks like the slums in Rio de Janeiro will be cut down by a significant percentage and be replaced with paved neighbourhoods in a cleaner environment.

I wish it was true...I do hope so. Once again I watched a terrible report on TV yesterday. The worst bist was when a lovely little girl (10 years old) was shot in the neck by a lost bullet, she was lying flat on the back along the drain and was bleeding to death holding her neck before some powerless passer-by eyes, was atrocious...I wonder how those helpless brazilians can handle such a stressful & dangerous life on a daily basis. This war against drug dealers/poverty must come an end, it's been lasting for too long. 6000 people killed per year only in Rio, that's incredible. What about Lula guys? Has he at least tried to sort this out or not at all...? I do wish that most of those unlucky people will live in much better conditions, they're human beings for god's sake, they're entitled to a decent life, far from blood and terror. That iniative as part of the Olympics is a first step, I'm happy about it, but let's be careful, nothing is done yet...if so, will be a milestone, but 13000 families out of what, 3 millions people living in those favelas (Rocinha & stuff...), there's so much more to do...
Fingers crossed...

Also, I found out about an abandoned hotel which never opened that sits in the middle of the huge forest.
The Gavea Tourist Hotel is an 18-storey building which has been on hold for decades in the forest of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was probably constructed in the mid-1960s, but never went beyond the concrete structural frame phase. It is unknown if it is structurally sound enough for a restart of construction. Should the Gavea Tourist Hotel be reopened because we do not want to see abandoned structures during the 2016 Olympics or should it be demolished and the forest restored because a good amount of it (the forest) was wasted?

That's because Rio is in Brazil, which is not an English-speaking country.
You certainly could have made an effort to learn some Brazilian Portuguese while you were in their country.
This is an unfinished residential tower in Barra da Tijuca named Torre Abraham Lincoln. It was originally planned as part of a large residential project proposed in the 1970s comprising around 76 towers, only 2 of which were fully constructed.
Thank God...76 towers of this type of architecture would have completely destroyed Barra.
Dedeco April 22nd, 2011, 04:49 AM Rio de janeiro got 2016 Olympics. I just hope there will be several more development projects. I was worried if RdJ has any height limits and I don't know how much of the city is covered in slums MMJR, you said that 60% of RdJ is covered in slums. I just want to know the favela coverage in slum-heavy Rio.
I'm very glad to see your interest in Rio. I worked in IBGE for two years and I was one of the four responsibles for gathering and analyzing statistical data in North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, wich has the most extense slum coverage of all Rio regions.
Rio de Janeiro officials say up to 20% of our population live in slums, but I may tell you what they consider slum does not fit the facts. On the other hand, officials commonly rise recognized favelas' population in order to guarantee more budgets.
But you didn't have a wrong impression about Rio when you said 60% of our population live in slums. Poverty is more present to the riches and tourists in Rio than in any other Brazilian state capitals. This is mostly because of our topography.
By the way, we don't see supertall buildings for well known reasons:
1st) rio still having enough space to build. it's faster and riskless to explore new terrains and small projects.
2nd) brazillian realty corporations used to take all risk in their projects: banks' participation was so small that they couldn't afford risky and expensive projects, what is not true anymore.
3rd) the economic strenght is a recent thing. rio lost more than its capital status in 1960.
4th) our engineering knowledge and teaching stills limited in many ways compared to china, germany and us. i'm a former engineering student.
5th) there are several legal restrictions in order to aprove supertall buildings. our law is plenty of requirements wich consider the nearby traffic raise and its needed investments to minimize the consequences.
I'm very optimistic with Rio de Janeiro and Brazil's growth, but there is still a lot to change. Sorry for grammar and spell errors, I'm not an everyday English speaker.

sebastiao July 8th, 2011, 01:59 PM Does anybody know the status or progress on the Gloria Palace Hotel?

Brazil Weekly now reports a story about the two-year delay of the Hotel Gloria renovation http://brazil-weekly.com
Jim856796 July 21st, 2011, 06:40 AM Is Barra da Tijuca ever going to be built-out in the future?
Jim856796 September 21st, 2011, 10:19 PM Considering that the stadiums of the city are getting rebuilt for the 2016 Olympics, what if the Rio de Janeiro had 4 major football stadiums? They can have a seating capacity of 80,000, 60,000, 40,000, and 20,000.
The 80K stadium - Maracana Stadium
The 60K stadium - Engenhao Stadium
The 40K stadium - Sao Januario Stadium
The 20K stadium - ?
I know that the Barra area will not be getting themselves a football stadium, much less a 20K one, because the chances of that happening are unlikely.
tzzki November 13th, 2011, 11:36 AM ^^The reconstructed Hotel Gloria may not be ready this year.
Should the Gavea Tourist Hotel be reopened because we do not want to see abandoned structures during the 2016 Olympics or should it be demolished and the forest restored because a good amount of it (the forest) was wasted?

jasong November 13th, 2011, 09:16 PM Wow, great pics. That looks like an awesome place to explore.
Jim856796 November 16th, 2011, 03:37 AM I think the Gavea Tourist Hotel should be torn down instead of revived. Who would allow a highrise concrete skeleton to crumble and decay for almost five decades? I doubt that the structure will ever be finished and opened, especially for the 2016 Olympics.

FAAN April 2nd, 2012, 07:56 PM Solar City Tower
Designed by RAFAA office based in Zurich, you can generate energy during the day and night, using solar energy and water, respectively. This tower will generate and supply power not only to the Olympic village, but also for the city of Rio.
The Solar City Tower also encompasses other features. Amphitheater, auditorium, cafeteria and shops are accessible on the ground floor, from which you access also to the public elevator that will lead visitors to various observatories, as well as a retractable platform for the practice of bungee jumping.
At the top of the tower you can enjoy all the scenery that surrounds the island which will be implemented and the drop of water generated by the entire system that integrates Solar City Tower, making it a point of reference for the 2016 Olympic Games and city of Rio de Janeiro.
Become a symbol of welcome to those who come to Rio de Janeiro by air or sea, since this will be the host city of 2016 Olympic Games.

Brazuca Surfer January 2nd, 2013, 05:43 PM AECOM Unveils Their Masterplan for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralymic Games
http://www.aecom.com/deployedfiles/Internet/Capabilities/Architecture/images/Hanway%20interview%20-%20Rio690-2.jpg
It is said that the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro will be the most temporary games in history! As announced in August, London-based AECOM was given another go at designing a masterplan for the international event (the firm was also responsible for London’s 2012 Olympic park master plan). The design emphasises the temporary nature of sporting venues as a way to avoid the negative legacy of former host cities, icluding Athens and Bejing. Judging from the preliminary design of the Rio Olympic park, the games are definitely taking a turn toward sustainability.
Apart from AECOM, the winning design team includes Daniel Gusmão Architecture of Rio, Wilkinson Eyre Architects, Pujol Barcelona Architects, IMG Sports and Expedition. The installations at Rio’s Olympic park are expected to cover an area of 1.18 million square meters in the district of Barra de Tijuca, which will cater for 15 Olympic and 11 Paralympic disciplines. The project includes the construction of six temporary venues and nine permanent ones.[...]

The answer is yes for most of them but, for example, only half of the Trump Towers project will be built up to 2016 (if so...).
