Thompson Center (a.k.a. Illionis State Office Building) - CHICAGO
Completed in 1985, by Helmut Jahn. 308 ft. [94m.] (17 floors)
Some Facts from Skyscrapers.com:
- The building's bold design by Helmut Jahn was commissioned by four-term Illinois governor James R. Thompson, after whom the building is named.
- Built around a giant cylindrical atrium with a sloping skylight on the roof and a glass wall on its southeast side.
-Contains state government offices, a post office, a rapid transit station serving five train lines, shops, sculptures, a free public art gallery, and a blood donation center.
- Many people compare the building's shape to a spaceship. The front side is a huge curve that sweeps around half a city block, and a futuristic glass cylinder extends from the roof over the atrium.
- Inside the atrium are glass elevators with round glass ceilings, and two levels of retail with a food court.
- Blue glass, salmon-pink panels, red structural elements, and pink granite give the interior and exterior an eye-catching color scheme.
- A two-story arcade encircles the base, with granite panels covering round columns on the street side. Isolated columns with these panels continue around the plaza's perimeter, getting smaller toward the corner.
