I like the shalom tower more, it's different and warsaw can use some variation. Shalom is already approved, the other one is just proposed.

Warsaw has definetly one of my favourite skylines in Europe.... Even though there are taller buildings elsewhere in Europe: the concentration and combination of different heights and architectural styles (after the proposals are constructed) - make Warsaw very unique.... Beatiful...

those old cars were given as a present from Russia in 80's (metro was supposed to be opend in 80's), now they are being superseded with new cars. If you are interested - here is official site in English http://www.metro.waw.pl/page.php?id=57

hey thx for the link. There it's written "Russian cars are used on the first section of the Warsaw subway." I think that doesn't mean that only old cars are used on the first section, these photos with the new cars you posted above are also from the first section, aren't they? One more question. The first section isn't completed right now cn you tell how many stations are still u/c and when does the second line start to be constructed? Thank you again!

^^^ they mean that those cars are use on the first line together with Alstom cars, now metro operates 17 stations and those are U/C

and about second line http://www.metro.waw.pl/page.php?id=44

Not exactly the truth. ;)
First 2 trainsets, each one of 5 cars, given by USSR, arrived to Warsaw in 1990.
Next 12 trainsets Warsaw bought St.Petersburg in 1994.
In 1997 Warsaw bought another 4-car trainset from St.Petersburg and 14 additional cars to lengthen earlier trains.
Now we have 15 Russian 4-car trains and 18 French 6-car trains. Russian trains aren't superseded. Metro just has ordered next 30 Russsian cars to lengthen existing Russian trains into 6-car sets.
Metro also plans tender for 5 completely new trainsets to service the entire first line when completed.

Completion of the first line with 21 stations is planned for 2008, and for 2008 is planned initiation of the construction of the second line, but I believe year 2009 is more realistic in both cases. ;)

The last stations of the first line are constructed with the open method:

Golden Opportunity
By Konrad Bagiński
14 February 2007

You know how it looks from the outside, now come inside, say the advertisements promoting Warsaw's much-hyped new Złote Tarasy (Golden Terraces) shopping mall, which opened amid fanfare Feb. 7.

The interior is interesting and spacious. It is clear that the investor focused on creating a stunning design rather than cramming in as many stores as possible. Still, there are more than 200 stores and service outlets, cafes, bars and restaurants under the impressive glazed roof structure.

Golden Terraces is an exclusive shopping mall developed by ING Real Estate. It has attracted prestigious tenants including Central Europe's first Hard Rock Cafe (HRC) restaurant, famous for displaying music mementos including Bono's and John Lennon's guitars; the drugstore chain Body Shop, considered a pioneer in natural cosmetics; a Palmers luxury lingerie store and the exclusive Hugo Boss. The legendary jazz club Akwarium, which was active for years in a building at the site of today's Intercontinental hotel, will start up again in March next door to the Hard Rock Cafe. The cafe is a great asset for Golden Terraces and a major draw for rock fans.

Golden Terraces is a huge building, but inside it does not feel like one. Its design, crisscrossed by various levels, stairs and passages, gives the impression of the complex being suspended in the air. The lightness is enhanced by its open structure. Placing the colorful mechanisms of the escalators behind glass panels was a great idea. The roof is more than a masterpiece of engineering: it is a work of art. It weighs 1,400 metric tons, including 600 tons of glass, and has 11 supports. It consists of nearly 5,000 pieces of glass, each of which is different. The roof is held together by 2,300 specially designed steel knots and 7,120 steel girders.

The Golden Terraces interior is friendly. You will always find your bearings.

Czesław Komorowski, head of the architecture department of the Epstein company, which was jointly responsible for designing Golden Terraces:

The interior design of Golden Terraces was a great challenge. The center has to accommodate many functions in one facility: trade, entertainment, offices, and at one stage a hotel was also planned. The most characteristic part of the facility, the wavy glass roof, was a relatively simple glass structure in the original concept. The investor, ING Real Estate, however, decided to create a unique glazed space and encouraged the designers to experiment further. The dome gradually increased in complexity, and finally resembles a silk shawl draped over seven billiard balls. Another characteristic is the central street, or "canyon." It is like a street lined by high-rise buildings on both sides. Long ago, there was an idea to connect the buildings in Warsaw's center with a pedestrian walkway. All that has remained is a pedestrian bridge between the Hotel Marriott complex and the Elektrim skyscraper. The canyon in Golden Terraces refers to that concept. The design was a tremendous challenge. Everything here is unique and special not only in form but also in scale. Many of the building regulations did not provide for such complex facilities. The designers, together with building and firefighting experts, kept searching for innovative solutions that would convince inspectors that the building would be safe. The friendly interior was achieved thanks to ensuring the streamlined movement of people. In many shopping malls you can easily get lost. One example to follow for architects is the Blue Water triangular-shaped retail center in Britain. Each corner has a characteristic point for visitors, thanks to which they always know their way. Golden Terraces, which is circular instead, operates under similar rules. You can always return to a point where you have already been. The main ring is well illuminated by daylight and visitors feel like they are walking down a street outside. The wide corridors provide good visibility. You can see the other levels with their stores and cafes from each level. The uniquely shaped, characteristic points are also important for orientation. Under the transparent roof, thanks to which you can see other buildings, the sky and the sun, you feel like you are outdoors in the city center.

Golden Terraces cost the investor about zl.1.5 billion. The facility has a retail area of 63,500 sq m, more than Blue City but about half that of Warsaw's Arkadia shopping mall. Golden Terraces will have 220 tenants including Marks & Spencer, H&M, Zara, Van Graaf, Intersport, Albert and Saturn. The entire mall covers 225,000 sq m. The building also has a four-level underground garage for 1,650 cars, an eight-screen multiplex movie theater and over 44,000 sq m of office space.

Hard Rock Cafe: Finally in Poland
"We would like the Hard Rock Cafe to be one of Warsaw's attractions, a must-see place like the Old Town and the Palace of Culture and Science," says Łukasz Stanicki, the manager of Warsaw's Hard Rock Cafe.

The walls of the cafe display an original piece of work drafted by Jim Morrison when he was at high school, a shirt Elvis Presley wore in Jailhouse Rock, a postcard written by Janis Joplin to her friend, and a jacket that belonged to Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols. For the younger generation, there are the trousers in which Shakira performed her latest world tour. The Grammy statuette presented to The Eagles for the song "Lyin' Eyes" in 1975 is also on display.

The cost of furnishing the place is unknown. Figures between 2.5 and 4 million euros have been mentioned. It is the chain's flagship in Central and Eastern Europe. Further Hard Rock Cafes will open in Cracow and Wrocław or the Gdańsk-Sopot-Gdynia Tricity, but also in Prague and other cities of the region.

The opening in Warsaw was attended by Ewa Learmount, a bartender from London's first Hard Rock Cafe, who has worked with the company for 35 years.

How much did it cost to build this terminal? The one they built in Tirana was very cheap and disappointing in my opinion.

J@NeKyYz
March 26th, 2007, 06:31 AM
The cost of the terminal is around 250 million US $. The terminal is nearly completed....will open in April of this year...however half of what u see in the project will be closed down (T1) for renovation .... in November of this year what you see will all be finished T1+T2.

Everything in yellow and green in the following link will be opened in april...the remainder later on (notice the dates)

They might open it very soon. ( finally!!!)

BTW there is a new proposal for 200m tower near Intraco and Marriot. There is a desing contest with Foster, Meier, Hadid and other well known architects taking part in it.

The cost is estimated at 200m euro and if it get's approved than they will start construction work next year.

Yeah thats a bit annoying. I guess it depends where you go and what experience you have when you visit. The country in general is quite nice, with lots of beautiful cities, although still poor in parts. Probably will change in the next 5-10 years.

i dont like architecture of polish cities. i think you take too much examples of architecture of other countries, especialy western. russia has for an example its own style (unfortunately mostly abandoned now) - socialistic palaces are unical and are a kind of buildings that are easy recognizible. and all of the projects in warsaw could be build in any city of any country. come on guys, have your own style!

"Socialistic palaces", as you call them, are great, but i wouldn't call them "russian style", as they are rather a mixture of styles from quite a lot of different places and times. They were also build in many countries, not only russia. Nowadays trying to create any form of "national" architecture" would be rather funny. For an example, a huge Lichen church in Poland, which consists of a lot of different elements from polish tradition, is concedered to be the greatest example of kitch and is hated by everyone in Poland who's interested in architecture.

You amused me :D There's a lot of unique modern apartment buildings under construction now in warsaw, and they are found VERY interesting by foregin investors. Immigrants from china often rent flats in some old communistic buildings which you could call "russian style" ;). I'll give you one example, since i know the situation there. Prosta Tower - modern residential building now u/c. I guess you could call it "western", or "modern", but it was designed by a polish architect - Stefan Kuryłowicz. It's quite unique in terms of a project, with a curved glass fascade separating balconies from a crowded street. I know sales people working with its developer, and as far as they inform me, apartments are sold very well - especialy among people from western europe doing business in poland and seeking comfort while living here.

The problem is that the city center has to be redevelopped, with new buildings and few streets as you see. During the past 15 years many projects were accepted, but as soon as another person was named to supervise the project, the plans changed. So, 2-3 years ago the ex-chief architect of Warsaw made and accepted a plan that consisted in low-rise buildings all around the Palace of Culture. But when the new city mayor won, she decided to change the plan another time. She wants to add some high-rise buildings to the master plan. Now, the authorities have the choice to add some skyscrapers near the Emilli Plater street, and for the rest, the actual plan will be used. But there is another plan that consists in a circle around the Palace, with some skyscrapers too. Pretty everyone in the Polish forum agrees that the plan with the circle is a joke and it's not the good way to reconstruct the city center. here are some pictures

the plan with the high-rise buildings near Emilia Plater street

Amazing stuff, especially the 283m tower - Warsaw is growing in leaps and bounds.

What's this I hear about another 257m tower near the Marriot?

The boom on Poland's construction market has attracted a growing number of real-estate developers from around the world. Of these, Israeli developers are especially prominent, accounting for an enormous amount of development activity in Poland, especially within the residential sector. Israeli companies account for some of the largest residential projects in Warsaw and other large Polish cities.
Recently Lilium, one of BSR's subsidiaries, announced plans to build a 257-meter-tall skyscraper on Al. Jerozolimskie in Warsaw, right beside the Marriot hotel. The property will compete with Orco's nearby Złota 44.
"As long as the the Polish property market continues to grow and developers are enjoying favorable conditions, Israeli investors will come to Poland," said Avi Friedman, economic attaché at the Israeli Embassy. He also confirmed that the economic department of the embassy continously receives inquiries from new developers regarding entering the Polish market.

That's a visualisation of Warsaw in 2012. I found it on the Polish forum...

Visualisation by Ring:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a212/ringu-pl/widokkopiecpowstania.jpg

As Ring said, it's only a draft, not very precise. In this photo you can't see skyscrapers from Wola district, only from city centre.

Of course the visualisation shows how the city would look like, if all the towers were constructed.

everything in Warsaw is square, it is like the city is undergoing a cubist renaissance, especially low rise buildings around 100m. The city needs some bold design to mix things up with some buildings that employ new angles and more curved facades. Not wanting to take anything away from the city b/c there are some real gems, however more variety is welcome IMO. I like the Kulczyk, and Libeskind designsb/c at least they're not straight up and therefore are a welcome break with the current trend of skyscrapers.

Big article on the Lillium Tower(250m) by Zaha Hadid on the net version of the biggest polish newspaper "Gazeta Wyborcza":
http://www.bryla.pl/bryla/1,85301,4769905.html

Different architects talk about it(like Kurylowicz, one of the best polish architects), there are alot of new pics and some comments from the company.
There was a proposal of a 300m< building, but Lillium didn't like the project, damn!!!!
Other architects that wanted to design this skyscraper were Norman Foster and Richard Meier.

As far as we know its just a drawing to show how big it will be for cannes...The Architect is most probably going to be Daniel Libeskind anyway thats the info we got from the press...If everything goes to plan they should start demolishing the holiday inn as soon as the Franchise finishes at the begining of 2009 and start construction in Q2of 2009 and finish in 2012. The tower would have offices in the Lower parts and 250 hotel rooms higher up. Its the same investors as Zlota 44 orco so the rumors about Libeskind could be true.

Another 330m tower is planned in the middle between Lilium and Kulczyk, as far as we know they have submited an aplication for building conditions..the investor is some company based in Cyprus.

Congrats Warszawa, I love the new terminal....just a small update from a Polish aviation forum, both Terminal 1 and terminal 2 are schengen/non-schengen. Both have been connected in the sterile as well as the non-sterile sides of the building. Passport control for non-schengen, as of March 30th will only occur before the non schengen gates in the north pier.

As for Etiuda, Etiuda is to be closed soon for major reconstruction. It will be modernized and expanded.

Also, two days ago Modlin Airport north of Warsaw was given a green light. It will be a low cost and cargo airport, for the most part.

Sochaczew is another airport which will be built between the cities of Warsaw and Lodz. The airport has gained an Austrian investor which will have shares in the airport. Construction will begin in 2009.:)

Warsaw will have a total of 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Airports in 2010. Fryderic Chopin being the largest (up to 13-15 million), Modlin and Sochaczew, both processing traffic within 1.5-2, perhaps 3 million):banana::banana:

Second line in Warsaw will have all of its walls covered with huge LCD panels. It will be the first such design in the world. Essentially once you stand on the platform you will be able to see what is going on outside just by looking at the walls ! Feeds will come from multiple high def cameras mounted outside. Weather news, advertisements as well as local and international news will also be breadcasted live.

I heard on Wikipedia that there's a plan for a terminal 3 which is on the opposite side of where the current terminals are. ^^

Pardon my languge, but this is fycking impressive.

We in Belgrade can just cry when seeing how far we've gotten compared to Warsaw since 1995, when both cities started building their first metro lines:nuts:

You should know that first plans of construction metro system in Warsaw was in 1925.

BTW I was 2 times last year in Belgrade, it's true you need metro asap there.

No no no, it's not like that!
First part of Warsaw's metro line 1 was opened in 1995.
The construction was initiated in 1983! So it took 12 years to open first part of it only! (11km) Additionally, it didn't even reach the city centre back then!
Since then each next station was slowly added to the rest, one by one, reaching 17 stations at present. The goal is to finish the remaining stations this year. All together it will have taken Warsaw 25 years(!) to build one metro line. So it's not that quick as you can see :) You can surely do better, if you start to build yours.

with all these projects in the pipeline I wonder how they will find workers in light of the constructor worker shortage stemming from the Euro2012, and where they will find the building materials. Is this an issue, are the companies worried?

exclusiv
April 18th, 2008, 01:42 AM
they plan to move the domestic terminal flights to T2 within the next weeks, they are also analysing the work that has been done by the contractor that was rejected from the project. After that they will probably choose a new company to finish the south pier and the central pier. There will not be a T3 unless they build a third runway/move the existing ones to be parallel, the Ministry of Infrastructure is currently analysing if it would be more appropriate to build a new HUB airport between Warsaw and Lodz.

there hasn't been an update in a while

Some questions about projects im curious about:
What is happening with Plac Defilad/Chopena and Plac Pilsudsekgo - when are they going to start construction ? Also when are they going to get going on the Modern Art Museum?

Is Lilium Tower still a reality or is that lost to the financial crisis?
