View Full Version : #091 l Canada Trust Tower l TORONTO l 261m l 53fl
RafflesCity October 17th, 2002, 11:42 PM Canada Trust Tower
Toronto, Canada
HEIGHT: 261m/856 feet
FLOORS: 53 floors
COMPLETION: 1990
ARCHITECT: Skidmore, Owings & Merril / Bregmann + Hamann Architects
Although it is only the third-tallest building in Toronto, the 51-story Canada Trust Tower is still one of its signature skyscrapers. Its numerous setbacks and unusual number of bevels allow for an extraordinary number of pricey corner offices -- up to 16 on some floors. The red beacon shown in these pictures help distinguish it from its fraternal twin, the 47-story Bay Wellington tower. The symbol is the old Canada Trust logo. It has since been replaced with a green TD (Toronto Dominion) logo.

Bob di Gills October 17th, 2002, 11:48 PM Not one of my top rated :(
4/10
Peter The Great October 18th, 2002, 03:07 AM My favorite in Toronto...nice geometric design...9/10.
AG October 18th, 2002, 10:04 AM Very nice design that is the equivalent of that of Library Tower of LA or OUB Centre in Singapore.
9.5/10
tayser October 18th, 2002, 10:13 AM very Toronto & definitely not my favourite
7
Scotia Plaza craps all over it!
tays
luis4083 October 18th, 2002, 12:06 PM not badd.........8.5/10
giallo October 19th, 2002, 01:33 AM mY second favourite in TO. 9.0.
DaninTO October 19th, 2002, 04:15 AM I love it more with the new TD logo on top now. One of my favourite in canada 10/10
Jasonhouse October 19th, 2002, 04:43 AM A bit bland, but I like it. Probably my 2nd favorite "tall" TO tower behind the proposed Ritz...
8.0/10
valantino October 19th, 2002, 09:34 AM Up close, looks cheap.
6.5/10
SUNNI October 19th, 2002, 10:18 AM 7/10, theu tried to make it look ordenary! :D
RafflesCity October 19th, 2002, 08:16 PM 8/10
Very interesting geometric design and very clean-cut. Excellent..the top looks a wee bit tacky though.
Sunflower October 19th, 2002, 09:53 PM good except for the top, which just looks strange...
7.5/10
Subdude October 20th, 2002, 03:20 AM Maybe not a stunner but I kind of like it!
7/10
NickT October 20th, 2002, 02:06 PM 7.5/10 I like the top and design but not that eyecatching.
Steven October 30th, 2002, 03:03 AM I don't like it. That red thing on top doesn't look to good either.
7.0
invincible October 30th, 2002, 12:27 PM ewww what is with that red thing on the top
at first i thought it was a crane
dont like the top part as it doesn't match the rest

Caledon1981 October 30th, 2002, 08:29 PM great design . . but looks better at sunset and at night . . 7/10
SteelCity32 November 1st, 2002, 02:31 AM pretty damn good looking. 9/10
Liz L November 1st, 2002, 07:44 AM 7.5/10 - Good shape - reminds me just a bit of the Petronas towers. And I like the setbacks on the top floors. But that spire just does not work, even if it IS supposed to be a functioning antenna. And it could use a few setbacks farther down, I think.
250gto November 1st, 2002, 07:57 PM How the hell can people give THIS a 9?!
It looks cheap. Like a 1/100th scale model for a movie or something. And that little red doohickey up top ain't helping.
3. Safe to say I ABHOR this building. For some reason, it just looks like it's from Canada or Australia. Can't explain it.
Byron November 3rd, 2002, 03:44 AM it looks like an oversized condo, even in real life... because of the beige and green glass effect. i like the shape but the colours are horrible, i voted 7, change the glass to blue or dark reflective silver and my rating would go to 9.
Byron November 3rd, 2002, 03:46 AM BTW that red block was canada trusts logo, its a c and a t. since TD and canada trust merged its now a green box with the letters TD on it.
Bobdreamz November 4th, 2002, 07:32 AM it's interesting but gets really busy towards the top..not a bad design..8/10..
DrumCorpsAlum November 6th, 2002, 07:41 PM 7.5/10. Nothing special.
KGB November 7th, 2002, 06:39 PM On it's own, it isn't bad...it just isn't a top rated example of it's design catagory. It competes with other buildings that are in the financial district....Mies's TD Centre...Pei's Commerce Court...WZMH's Scotia Plaza, and the very beautiful Royal Bank Plaza....even Stone's FCP.
Where it excels is inside, and on the street....Calatrava's soaring atrium, and great old preserved historical facades...PATH mall is also good quality.

DaninTO November 8th, 2002, 06:06 AM Thanks to Alexis on the Toronto Forum:

enzo November 9th, 2002, 01:20 AM It's an icon for Toronto. I suppose due to the geometry and the spire's red feature it's instantly recognizable. It has a sort of friendly, open, "Canadian" character as well.
7/10
CTroyMathis November 9th, 2002, 07:59 AM A very recognisable landmark in the TO skyline. I don't mind it one bit. I'd definitely like to see the interior.
7.5.
TYW December 18th, 2002, 07:10 AM 8.5/10
my favourite toronto skyscraper
arnold December 18th, 2002, 07:09 PM its a fairly nice design that adds variety to the TO skylike... i like it. 7.5/10. but givin the massiveness of these two buildings, i think that the proposed phase III is overkill and will ruin the site.
Wu-Gambino December 23rd, 2002, 04:30 AM love the coster 8
TraderinToronto December 24th, 2002, 01:47 AM It looks alright. It's one of the few setback skyscrapers in Toronto, adding a little bit offlare to the skyline. But I have to agree the top could been better. I agree the spire looks like a crane. But still my 3rd favourite in Toronto.
7/10
Venusfan December 25th, 2002, 04:29 AM 6/10
The top doesn't work to me.
Andy6 February 5th, 2003, 03:34 AM Dull and uninspiring; the cladding isn't very attractive. The upper "setback" floors aren't all real floors--just fakes covering mechanical equipment and the base of that tower (same with the Bay-Wellington Tower, its compatriot). The Galleria in the ground floor is very good, if a bit antiseptic. 5.5/10
The Messiah February 26th, 2003, 08:07 PM The geometric design is ok,but the rest doens't appeal to me.
6.5/10
deep sea buildings March 2nd, 2003, 06:31 PM hard pushed to give it more than 4! and whats that red thing sticking out the top?
Evergrey April 11th, 2003, 02:53 AM 9 Perhaps Toronto's best... great looking PoMo with great geometry near the top... but the spire hurts it
airsickpenthousedweller April 16th, 2003, 09:51 PM A dissapointing tower.
TropicalSQ744 May 5th, 2003, 03:09 PM The rotated sharp edges towards the top kinda remind me of the UOB.. Not bad at all :) The facade has much to be desired though... It looks very plain i tink :bash:
8/10
rj2uman May 26th, 2003, 03:25 PM I like the shape but that top just ruins it for me. 6.5/10
james2390 August 7th, 2003, 11:37 PM nice
brendon14 August 12th, 2003, 05:36 PM whoever gave it a 3or less is gay
KGB August 23rd, 2003, 08:06 PM Hmmm....in one short sentence, you've managed to convey the fact that you not only have poor taste in architecture, but are a bigot as well.
Good job dude. LOL!!!!!
KGB
AtlanticaC5 August 26th, 2003, 08:22 PM I like it. 8/10
renell August 28th, 2003, 11:04 PM 7/10 i would have given it a higher rating, but the top one RUINED it big. reminds me of UOB, or was it OUB.:?
Wisma August 29th, 2003, 09:07 AM Can somebody cut that ugly looking spire?
7/10.

The crown looks amazing, the rest of the building has good design.
Aquarius December 21st, 2003, 02:16 AM The top part is pathetic, is a very simple, boring skyscraper 3/10
bohemian|senses April 3rd, 2004, 12:22 PM I very much like it. I love the geometric design and the colours. I have a bit of an issue with the pinnacle. I think they should have given the building more height and done without the antena...it just makes it look bad and somehow "fat." FCP and Scotia are way better than this one...not bad though.
8.5/10
7 World Trade April 4th, 2004, 10:12 PM i like the building's shapes, but they gotta remove that red elevator on the top attached to the spire and replace the spire with something more eyecatching
8.5/10
SHORTY April 5th, 2004, 04:57 AM 7.5/10
I enjoy this building, like most of TO's top towers it really is impressive up close. The atrium is the icing on the cake.
Orfeo April 18th, 2004, 07:52 AM 8/10
It's okay...except for the top.
Schroedinger's Cat June 27th, 2004, 02:49 PM 7/10
digili_man July 8th, 2004, 08:10 PM i love its cool design at the top and it looks very shiny...9
yoyo22 July 23rd, 2004, 05:21 PM 6.5/10
Not bad. I like the corners and the bevels. Really interesting. Facade is only ok, and the size and shape dont work together, they work against each other. Still results in a pretty nice tower, if a little ordinary.
DamienK July 27th, 2004, 09:04 PM I like the complex setback shape, but not the grey/green colour scheme. 7.5/10
Rapid August 4th, 2004, 06:52 AM Looks like the one in Singapore, but shorter.
dutchmetal August 5th, 2004, 08:17 AM 7,5 / 10
Dubai-Lover August 27th, 2004, 08:12 PM average, don't like spire! 6.5
Monkey September 17th, 2004, 08:10 PM 7/10
Not bad. It seems to be lacking something, though. The top is quite eye-catching at first glance ... but the more I look at it, the less special it seems. I can think of many other skyscrapers with better tops and more intricate setbacks than that. There's nothing particularly "wrong" with this building, it's just I've seen much better.
Imperial September 17th, 2004, 08:56 PM 6/10
Zuelas November 2nd, 2004, 10:30 PM 8
Really like the shape of this bldg but then it builds up to that crap on top. If u put a wig on an otherwise handsome guy he won't look like a total idiot but he still looks a little strange. That's what happens here and what a shame that is.
empersouf November 5th, 2004, 02:52 PM 8.5
Sitol447 November 5th, 2004, 02:56 PM 6/10 - I don't like it..
andysimo123 November 6th, 2004, 01:17 AM Looks like one or two others with the type of shape its got. But this one looks better so 9/10
Ashok November 8th, 2004, 06:41 AM don't like the TD thing on top 7/10
Rockefeller January 14th, 2005, 06:56 AM This building is a perfect case of looking better in person than a photograph. 9/10. The TD thing has to go though.
Þróndeimr January 17th, 2005, 10:02 PM 7.5/10
Filip January 19th, 2005, 04:16 AM Great looking building, one of my fav in Toronto. One thing bugs me though, it seems kinda fat. If you look at it the building seems to be too short for its overall size.
SkyHawk January 20th, 2005, 04:11 PM 8.5/10
MattSal March 18th, 2005, 02:25 AM My favorite building in Toronto and one of my most favorite crowns in the world. I give it a 9.5/10.

Pengui April 21st, 2005, 04:45 AM Grey :-(
Quite depressing sight.
The shape of the top is interesting, but doesn't work because of the color. The spire looks unfinished. Like if it was choped off.
The bottom part is just boring and sinister.
3.5
Justadude April 21st, 2005, 08:30 AM Two things I don't like: the color and the antenna.
Other than that, not bad. It reminds me of a similar building in Atlanta, but the setbacks are better-executed. They seem to be somewhat random at first, but quickly take on a pattern if you examine them. It's not a great scraper, but a very solid one.
1st Division Marine April 21st, 2005, 09:16 AM 10.

Nouvellecosse July 2nd, 2005, 05:19 PM Probably my favourite in T.O. As many people seem to notice, most buildings in To and in Canada in general tend to be boxy. That's just our style. But this building has actually managed to incorporate some of the elegant style of spired buildings like the Chrysler building while still keeping some of the traditional Canadian boxiness.
I admit that boxes may not be the prettiest of designs, but it's more important to me that we be ourselves, and this building really fits the personallity of Toronto.

Oriolus November 4th, 2005, 03:32 AM It's in the same vein as US Bank Tower in LA or UOB in Singpore with the square windows on a bland tan coloured facade, but I think I like Canada Trust a little better than the other two. It seems to be more reflective and the towers form breaks up the 'ordinariness' of the facade quite well. 8/10

i_am_hydrogen November 28th, 2005, 06:46 AM SOM went a little overboard with the setbacks--they're too hectic. Also, the transition from the lower three-fourths of the building to the upper fourth looks awkward from some angles.

isaidso April 21st, 2007, 08:50 AM Not bad, although the proportion at the top is abit off. This building looks better from a distance. Up close, it's not sophisticated enough for it's surroundings.
The 'matching' Bay-Wellington Tower next to it is a disaster. I thought it was a joke when they built that. No sense of proportion and shape. It is so awkward looking it's difficult to look at.
The saving grace is the atrium by Calatrava that connects the two. Stunning!

I love how they also combined that old stone building within the atrium!! When I was in T.O I sometimes couldn't resit getting my fix at the Marche.

koolio January 20th, 2008, 04:32 AM 8.5 and in my opinion, the best building in Toronto (for better or for worse). It seems to create quite a polarizing effect within the masses....I personally love the design, especially the spire and the top portion in general. The only let down, in my opinion, is the lack of "polish" if you may. It does tend to feel a bit bland from close up. It would have been better if it were a bit taller and did not have two similar buildings right beside it.

The Canada Trust Tower is designed to be a modern variation of classic deco style. Spires are very prevalent in deco architecture, and I think that the "ladder" you refer to on this tower is meant to evoke that style.
And anyway, it looks terrible without it.
