I think there were some proposals to increase Fenway Park's capacity to 45,000. the current capacity is 40,000 and with no additional space for expansion, does Fenway Park look sorta complete? And does the ballpark even have any luxury boxes?

It's pretty clear to see the entire tier of suites running down both sides of the field tucked under the pavilion, there aren't a ton, but I think they have enough to suffice, especially with the $250,000 price tag.

And if they wanted to they could get rid of whatever is on top of the suites in left, and the right field deck to extend the pavilion level down the lines to the foul posts, that would a atleast a couple thousand seats

i think the proposal you mentioned was from when they were considering building an entirely new park. To answer the completeness question, yes i think its complete- more than any other park. I love the old time parks how they have odd dimensions and have seats wherever you could pack them in.

Because of the street leayout, it would be very hard to build out any more around it.

They COULD do that, reconfigure everything and tear some things down, but it would diminish the historic aspect of it even more.

Man, I've been in love with Fenway Park since watching that movie 'A Perfect Catch'.

I'd totally go on a date with Jimmy Fallon there :P

The place has such a social history. It was amazing when the Boston Redsox won a few years ago, after what seemed like a billion years of losing.

I say this as a die-hard Yankee fan who hates the Red Sox with every bit of my soul - Fenway is the best park in all of baseball today. I use that "today" qualifier as I don't think anything will ever top pre-renovated Yankee Stadium, but Fenway is magnificently beautiful. I remember fearing that the Green Monster seats would really take away from the park, and while I do prefer Fenway without those seats, I don't think they're bad at all, and that they do blend in quite nicely.

It will be a terrible day if/when the Sox move out of Fenway. I hate the team that plays in it, I can't stand a lot of the fans that inhabit it (although there are plenty of awesome Sox fans - hell, one of my best friends is a die-hard Sox fan), I hope that place never sees another World Series game in its hopefully eternal existance... but I still love Fenway. It, along with Wrigley Field and Yankee Stadium, is something every baseball fan must see at some point (although YS is getting knocked down at the end of this year - I think the new Stadium will be a must-see as well though). It's such a beautiful part of what, in my opinion, is the greatest sport ever invented.

(BTW, one of the things I most want to do before I die is see Yankees/Red Sox at Fenway. I've seen it at the Stadium, but I really want to make the trip up to Fenway with a bunch of fellow brave Yankee fans and see it up there. I can only imagine how intense the atmosphere is, especially in the heat of a pennant race.)

Its cool how they close that street (yawkey way?) on match days, theres always a great atmosphere in the bars around the stadium too.

I heard a while ago that landsdowne street was getting redeveloped and places like the Avalon and that pool / bowling place could be going so in theory they could add extra seats onto the green monster I guess

No chance they build New Fenway now. The new Sox ownership (well, they're not really new anymore, but they came after the New Fenway plans were released) has committed to staying at Fenway Park for the long term, and they're showing it by doing all of these renovations.

Also, they couldn't get a favorable land deal for the place where they wanted to build New Fenway, which was a major reason it's not happening (along with the outroar from Sox fans and baseball fans overall).

The difference between Fenway before Henry took over and after Henry took over is astounding though - he really has fixed up that ballpark and made the expansions it needed to remain competitive. I'm not happy about the increases in seating capacity, considering I want nothing but dismal failure for the Sox, but it was the right and necessary decision.

I meant their for the future is to stay at Fenway for the long term and not replace it anytime soon. A few years ago, that certainly wasn't the case, but a variety of factors has made the current Sox ownership decide to stay at Fenway.

Just like any rivalry, as much as you think you hate them, you are doubtless very glad they are there and doing well to make it all the more exciting as a (I would guess) Yankees fan that you are.

As a Cubs fan I have heard a lot of talk about the new owner "fixing up" Wrigley and sprucing up the concourses, facade, skybox suites etc. I wonder if anyone has photos of before and after of some of the changes that they have done to Fenway so far and what they plan to do further? Are you generally happy with the changes or frown down on them?

Where is this 39,928 figure coming from? I know theyve sold out the last 400 odd games but they only averaged 37k last year, which I know is due to the reduced capacity for the night games but have they ever came close to getting 39k in?

I thought that sounded high as well.

"Those crowds will never be equaled under Fenway's current dimensions. After World War II, more stringent fire laws and league rules prohibited the overcrowding that was so common in the 1930s. The current capacity of Fenway Park is 36,108 for night games and 35,692 for day games."

1. Fenway Park already hosted the 2010 NHL Winter Classic, which the Boston ruins won.

2. Have the old wooden seats at the Grandstand Section been replaced or are they still remaining today? If not, then they should be replaced if they're falling into disrepair.

Historic, but not a great place to watch a game. Blind spots all over the stadium. Seats are cramped. Pain in the ass to walk around. Not enough bathrooms. (plus house bathroom is just as big)

All the small renovations and upgrades they are making right now is.... "putting lipstick on a pig" Sox should look to build a new stadium after it's 100 year anniversary.

Aside from the cramped seats, there is not a better stadium in all of MLB to see a game. Fenway is approaching 100 years old and their are modern stadiums, the new Cowboys and new Meadowlands and Yankee Stadium, that all feature seats that have blind spots. Look at the neighborhood around Fenway. Only Wrigley Field can touch it based on food selections and transit options. Aside from some seats that are behind poles, there is not a bad seat in the place.

Disagree with pretty much everything. It's one of the worst ballparks I've been to. Fenway has obstructed seats in the high priced seating areas in the lower evels. None of those new stadiums do. Cramped seats and cramped concourses, How is it's food and transit options better than the NY and Chicago Stadiums? Besides.. that has nothing to do with the stadium it self. Besides a few poles? Not a bad seat in the place? Sorry that's just a lie. The stadium is full of blind spots.

That is just laughable. I am going to assume you have been to 1, maybe 2 Sox games. Aside from the seats that are located in the areas of the support poles, every seat in Fenway has a great view of the field. Where in the lower levels, in front of the said support poles, are there obstructed views?

My point is that is pretty sad that modern stadiums, such as the new Cowboys, new Meadowlands, Target Field, the new Yankee Stadium, Lucas Oil Field, etc. all have obstructed view seats. So insulting Fenway, a park that is approaching 100 years old, it laughable.

Fenway is what it is....it does not bill itself a new, plush stadium. The Red Sox will eventually get a new stadium, but only so they are able to have more suites and club seats to keep up with the Yankees, Mets, Phillies, etc.

a few seats vs all over isn't laughable. No one said it isn't historic or great atmosphere, but its old and if people are saying its really a dump and needs some updating, I don't get the problem with that. Risers can easily be repaired and seats can easily be replaced.

Look at Darrell K. Royal - TMS. Its almost as old, but the concourses, seating and risers are constantly kept up to date and it constantly gets compliments from visitors in how nice and new it looks up close. Its not a dump at all. Old doesn't have to mean dump.

History and nostalia are the two main reasons Fenway will survive beyond its 100th birthday. The Red Sox have made so many changes the last several years, that a new ballpark probably won't happen for some time. Overall, that is probably a good thing. I'm not a big fan of most of the ballparks built after 2001 anyway, so having a unique place like Fenway still around is good for baseball.

Sorry if there's already a thread that discussed this, but is it a camera setting or a photoshop thing that makes the photos above have that surreal appearance?

The concourse is looking good. There are several scenes of Fenway in the film, The Town.

^^ Saw it, real good movie BTW.

I don't know if I could get a really good sense of the uprgrades from the movie. I have heard so much about how they have been renovated but from what I could tell they seemed pretty unspectacular. I of course don't know what to compare them to since I haven't seen photos of the old concourses.

I'm partially curious because I often hear how Fenway should be used as a model for the Cubs rehabilitation of Wrigley but I want to know what type of upgrades people have in mind when alluding to the Fenway example.

Happy 100th Birthday to Fenway Park! :)

Celebrated just the way it should be: with a Yankees win!

All kidding aside, the throwbacks for both teams today were spectacular, even more so cause everyone rocked the high stirrups. The no number look was sweet too.

I wish I could find a shot of Curtis Granderson. He really made the uniform look good today, wearing it exactly as it should be.

Is the stadium still selling out these days?

Is the stadium still selling out these days?

That is a subject of some contention. The Red Sox do draw very well every game. But reports have come out that the second hand brokers have been selling tickets way below face value to some games and that has helped keep the sellout streak alive. Other reports claim the Sox have given away some tickets to keep the streak going.

Ace Tickets is the official reseller of the Red Sox. It's legal scalping and a slap in the face to the fans. They manage to get hundreds of tickets to each home game and mark up the prices. If I were to have an extra ticket and try to strike a deal with someone outside the park, that would be illegal. That's why I love hearing these resellers cry when the team tanks and they have to either sell tickets at face value, or below face value to try and recoup some of their money.

I would imagine that if the tickets could only be sold through the Red Sox, they would sell well over 90% of the total tickets per season.

I hate soccer games at baseball stadiums, but Fenway did look great for Liverpool vs Roma. Can't find the ESPN highlight on youtube.

Totally random thought but with how scoreboards are progressing with video boards now being part of the outfield walls in many parks will we ever see the Green Monster turned into a giant video wall? I think it would be a huge mistake but I also kind of think it is inevitable.

The backlash would be overwhelming. Plus, you would have to come up with a new nickname. You wouldn't be able to call it the "Green Monster" anymore.

It's highly unlikely that MLB would ever allow it, as it's right at field level and would be a major distraction to the players.

Maybe not the whole wall, but I could see the oldfashioned manual scoreboard being replaced by an LED board.
