View Full Version : What's your kit?
Erebus555 August 1st, 2008, 11:51 PM Come on. What camera have you got? And if it is an SLR, what lenses do you have and use? :)
I've got a Nikon D70
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/images1/d70.jpg
And the following three lenses:
Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-D
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/images1/28-80mm-d/D3S_5359-460.jpg
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG
http://www.ephotozine.com/images/Sig70-300apolens.jpg
Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D AF
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41xx4JqM9dL._SS500_.jpg
And the nitty gritty stuff:
-58mm polariser
-58mm lens petal
-4 batteries for the camera (I don't like charging batteries...)
I'll be getting a polariser and lens petal for my 50mm f/1.4 soon and a Sigma 10-20mm by the end of the year. Tempted to get a flashgun too. :)

Same as that one. 1 battery and 1GB memory. I had the option of a bag but I opted for my laptop bag. Take the laptop and upload in the local pub.
Am also looking at tripods, a 4GB or 8GB new memory card and a more powerful lens. Lens is the worse bit.
Medo August 2nd, 2008, 12:38 AM Nikon D300
This camera is fu***ng awesome. It's quick, responsive and tough. I love it.

El_Greco August 2nd, 2008, 02:36 AM Ive got Nikon D50 kit lens 70-300mm and 10-20mm and since I bought 10-20mm I no longer think of joining...erm as Medo says the dark side.
Medo August 2nd, 2008, 02:48 AM Good man. :D
But what on earth is this 10-200mm you speak of?
El_Greco August 2nd, 2008, 02:53 AM Lol sorry I mean 70-300mm :shifty::doh:
Medo August 2nd, 2008, 02:57 AM
I knew it must be a typo. But just imagine a lens that is 10-200mm, that would be awesome.
Downfallen August 2nd, 2008, 03:02 AM Canon 350D
Stock 18-55
Sigma 10-20mm
Tamron 70-200mm
8mm Fisheye
No filters...just a clean bag , a dry cloth and a bit of spit
Cheap and cheerful stuff because it gets abused quite a bit !

It would indeed. Its pretty annoying having to change lenses.
Anyway...theres something wrong with my 70-300mm - you can only focus manually autofocus dont work....how strange...but then again it is a cheap lens.

Nikon D40 (cheap and cheerful, but does the job!)

Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens - awesome, literally the only lens I need on my walkabouts
http://www.livingroom.org.au/photolog/Nikkor-18-200mm-F-3.5-5.6g.JPG
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8s (Mark III) old school lens inherited off my Grandma, have to do everything manually, but the results are incredible when I get the light right.

And I stick all my stuff in this little fella when I'm out and about.. which is amazingly easy to use and makes me feel much less self conscious about carrying my camera around with me. LowPro Slingshot 100
http://www.cameraworld.co.uk/images/products/large/Lowepro%20SS100%20296.jpg
Also have similar aged Nikkor 28mm and 135mm lenses, as well as the classic old Nikon FM2which are all kinda redundant now, but I think I'll keep them as momentos of my Grandma.
Inherited lots of funky filters and gizmos, but they're all 52mm, so not massively useful.
Planning to sell the 18-55mm kit lens that came with the D40.
I've also inherited one of these... which aparently are quite sought after and can fetch a fair penny at auction.. :)

Sweet! (Can't actually believe they cost that much.. when you think about how much camera that would buy you!)
Now I've just got to check that it works... do you reckon eBay is the best bet?
Ginger Tosser August 3rd, 2008, 01:34 AM It might be worth asking a few camera dealers first. There's quite a few listed on here (http://www.ukcamera.co.uk/). Not sure which ones would be best though.
T0M August 3rd, 2008, 03:48 AM Excellent, will do. Cheers.

Wow a twin lens reflex camera.
I wish I had a camera like that. :(
I'm thinking of going into medium and large format photography but I don't know where to start, partly because I've never been a 'film' photographer. I've only ever had digital cameras, I have no knowledge of developing pictures and stuff like that, nor do I know anything about scanning them into the computer. :(
Bachy Soletanche August 3rd, 2008, 11:20 AM I've got a little cheap(ish) and cheerful compact thing, perfect for just whipping it out for a quick snap of a tower block or something.
T0M August 3rd, 2008, 01:04 PM I should also add that I got rid of my Canon IXUS compact to make the upgrade to dslr, but now use this little fella for those 'out and about instant snaps'

5MP, autofocus, xenon flash (plus 8GB microSD card)... does the job nicely!
Ginger Tosser August 3rd, 2008, 06:00 PM I'm thinking of going into medium and large format photography but I don't know where to start
Now is a good time as people are trading in their old MF stuff, i'd love to have a go at large format also. Maybe one day!
I started with a cheapo russian Lubitel, which cost about £40. Produced fairly acceptable images. As for scanning, flatbeds have got much better over the years but I still have a MF film scanner. I do need to get out and play with the MF stuff again (especially as I've got 20 or so rolls of 120 Velvia stuck in the bottom of my freezer!)

awesome TOM.
How much? .. if you don't mind me asking.
and what are the cheaper alternatives? Tamron?

My advise for you is don't go with the cheaper alternatives. Save your money a bit longer and go for the good stuff, it's for the best.

Ouch! It aint cheap... I paid over the odds because I got it from Jacobs (I know I know) at the same time as my camera... came to just over £400 smackers including a promotional rebate from Nikon... You can pick them up for around £370 online, or from about £330 second hand on eBay.
Seems crazy that it cost way more than my camera, but everyone who's anyone says spend your money on the lenses as cameras come and go but a good lens is always a good lens. Still i haven't regretted it yet.. the range and the sharpness are unbelievable.. it really is an 'all in one' solution.
The other options would be to go with the standard 18-55mm (I'm just about to sell the one that came with my D40) and add a Nikkor 55-200mm VR lens which will give you the same range at half the price, but you'll obviously be using 2 lenses rather than one. I think Sigma also do a 18-200mm which you can pick up for around £200... no idea what it's like though... :dunno: I agree with Medo though, stick with the stuff you've got and save up. There's no point buying a lens you'll only want to replace. I bought the slightly cheaper (though not not really cheap!) Nikon 16-85mm VR lens, used it for a day and decided that I was going to miss that extra zoom so took it back and spent a bit more on the big daddy. :D

querido August 7th, 2008, 09:53 AM Thanks TOM ... & Medo too,
Maybe next year I'll be splashing out on something longer. :)
? > is there a different between a Nikon lens and a Nikkor?
I understand that Nikkor is a Nikon company but my 18-55 has a Nikon badge - no mention of NIkkor.
T0M August 7th, 2008, 01:49 PM Good question querido.. I assume they're different badges for the same thing, but I'm not sure.... over to Medo?

So the quick answer is: "it's all the same thing":)
just looked at my lens again and it does say AF-SNIKKOR underneath Nikon

For an entry level DSLR there is very little difference between these brands. I wouldn't say Canon are better for lenses, with Nikon you can use lenses made 50 years ago whereas Canon lenses before the 80s won't work with the new cameras. But then again you can get an adaptor and use nikon lenses on canon cameras.
The Nikon D40 and D60 are quite good entry level cameras, the D40 in particular, there are many people on this website that use the D40 and they are all happy with it (myself included).
If you insist on a Canon then I would recommend the new Canon 1000D, it is a great camera but it is a bit expensive at the moment, prices are expected to drop to the levels of the other entry level DSLR brands.
You should read the other threads in this section for more information, especially the Official Nikon Thread and Cameras and Lenses Discussion Thread.

Nikon/Cannon, BMW/Mercedes? Who can honestly say which is best, so it’s down to your own personal point of how you view these brands.
damage, you have a friend who said always go for Cannon! Maybe you should listen to your friend and he might pass on a few tips & tricks .. lend you one of his lenses, or something.
For some reason I have always loved Nikon. My first proper camera back in the 80’s was a heavy second-hand Nikon SLR … she was a beaut, but I got a little bored with having to buy film, get 24 developed to find there was only one or two I really liked, so a few years ago, after getting my first (cheap ‘n cheerful) digital, I passed the Nikon on to my cousin in Portugal. The camera was made before he was born and he just loved the idea of owning it … I don’t think he uses it!
Now recently I decided I’d like to get back into photography as a hobby, set up my own blog and paste pics on there, for my own amusement and as a way of keeping in touch with distant family & friends. So I bought a Nikon; it seemed the obvious choice. The D40 was recommended, but so too was the equivalent Cannon. I went to John Lewis in Oxford Street with the intention of picking salesmen’s brains … saw the D40 and fell in love. You have to buy what looks and feels nice in your hands.
Nikon/Cannon? I don’t honestly know, but in my experience, people will – nine times out of ten – recommend the brand that they know and that’s the brand that they own.
:)
Ginger Tosser August 9th, 2008, 11:53 PM All D-SLRs that are available now are fine. Canon/Nikon have the advantage of a larger range of 1st and 3rd party lenses and accessories.
Best to try a camera and see if it fits you!
T0M August 10th, 2008, 01:27 AM When I was doing my research and considering the whole Canon/Nikon dilema I found that Canon are normally a bit more expensive for the equivalent camera (certainly at the lower end of the spectrum) and that the standard kit lenses they're supplied with a pretty poor. So for me it was a question of pure economics, I could get a cheaper decent camera, with a good lens if I went with Nikon. If I went with Canon I'd pay more up front and so be stuck with the lesser kit lens for longer.
In the end I got the D40 and haven't regretted it at all! :)
eighty4 August 21st, 2008, 12:05 AM I have :-
nikon D80
18-200mm vr
50mm f1.8
4GB memory card
1x CPL filter (circular polariser)
1x sunlight filter
I'm not a fan of the D80 i used to own a D70 but it was stolen so got the D80 as a replacment. The D70 was better in a lot of ways, mainly its metering, the D80 hates higlights and i have to constantly shoot in -1 exp tp counteract it.......but sometimes even thats not enough
I'm in 2 minds at the moment, save up for D300.....or D700, what ya reckon ?
Medo August 21st, 2008, 12:31 AM Definitely go for the D700. It's basically a D3 in a D300 body and £1200 cheaper. Your 18-200mm lens would work on the D700 but you would lose the full frame advantage. Still that is better than the Canon cameras where small frame lenses don't work on full frame bodies.

If i put my lense on the D700 what would the effect be ? would it just look the same as pictures taken with the D80 ? or will there be an image in the middle and band around ?
or is that just plane ridiculous ? lol
Medo August 21st, 2008, 02:39 AM What happens is the Nikon FX (full frame) cameras i.e. D3 & D700 automatically turn into regular (DX) cameras when you put on a DX lens. Therefore only the centre of the sensor is used, in this case the camera effectively becomes a 5MP camera. No you do not get an image with dark round edges, you get normal images but at half the resolution.
