Rockdale Council is proceeding with it's plan to build a pier and marina at Brighton-Le-Sands as part of it's 20 year plan to rejuvenate the suburb.

On the weekend, Rockdale Council called for expressions of interest by the private sector to fund it's construction estimated at $80 million placing ads in major metropolitan newspapersa including the SMH

Very interesting - looks lovely, but the comment about " a few swimmers...." rings hollow given the thousands of people flocking there on a pleasnt weekends day.

Interestingly, the concept drawings show a 2 lane grand parade with angle parking south of Bay St - given that this is currently 5 lanes (6?) with the peak flow bumper to bumper during peaks (including heading north on Saturday and Sunday evenings), why is there no mention of alternate commuter routes? :)

The Council are also proposing the Brighton Bypass which would run along the corridor for the M6, starting at Sandringham St and finishing at General Holmes Drive Kyeemagh where the M5 also meets.

I noticed that.

Looking at the proposed alignment of it, I sure hope they look into using something better than a diamond interchange at President Avenue! It'll be a traffic nightmare otherwise.

Perhaps a SPUI? (there's not really space for a larger interchange than that).

Fair enough, thanks.

Me, I don't mind Brighton as it is....

It's got some great restaurants and cafes but it is in need of renewal. I hope the second major hotel is built within the next few years (to be same height as the Novotel).

Wow, I'm surprised this got a the go-ahead with the vocal opposition when the plan was proposed last year. Well done to Rockdale to have the balls (so to speak).

Didn't know there was so much opposition. It was more the NIMBY's and environmentalists.

Apart from the pier at Manly Cove, there isn't a pier at any beach in Sydney. It will make the beach at Brighton unique.

When you look at it, the aim is to Brighton into Sydney's answer to St Kilda but I dont think anyone has noticed.

Is there an estimated starting date? Which development will come first? The F6 corridor should be built first I think, however this road/freeway will take ages to plan and then they have to Environment Impact stuff, so I'm not sure? What do others think?

They can probably get at least the pier going without too much issue.

The rest of the amendments will need to wait until the road gets built, though.

This has been put on hold due to the Global Financial Crisis. Rockdale Council only received two tenders but they were not happy with the proposals. :(

There could be some good news looming on this one according to The Leader (17/2/2011). :)

Liberal Candidate for the state seat of Rockdale and current member of Rockdale Council, John Flowers is proposing to support it's construction if he is elected next month at the State Election.

The ALP won't support it because they argue that the community isn't behind it and The Greens reject it outright.

Brighton needs a project like this to revive itself otherwise what future is there for the suburb?

The Liberals need a swing of 10 % to claim Rockdale and given the state of affairs it's possible.

Well Im part of the Rockdale Council community and I support it 100% :), I think its an awesome plan. We need projects like this to bring tired old suburbs around Sydney back to life and world class.

Sydney is an awesome city but we need more than the Opera House and Bridge to make us an stand out.

The entire area would benefit from it. Rockdale is quite drab these days and needs something to pull people into the area.

Brighton is one of the cheapest suburbs around the beach and this project can change that . When this is done , it will bring people back to Brighton Le sands and business around will enjoy the extra traffic . eventually people will see potential and invest more infrastructure to the area . Then you have a The Destination in the " Inner South" .

The other issue is the traffic that uses The Grand Parade and General Holmes Drive. Not an appealing sight.

SHOULD Destinations Rockdale be put back on the agenda?

Liberal candidate and Rockdale councillor John Flowers has flagged the vision for a 300-berth marina and pier with crystal tower at Brighton-Le-Sands as a primary element of his campaign for the March state election.

The plan was launched in 2005 but dumped by Rockdale Council four years later because of the financial crisis and a lack of interest from private investors and developers.

Cr Flowers, who has served on Rockdale Council since 2004, said if elected, he would attempt a "multifaceted vision" for the area to include the marina and pier plan.

He said he would aim to bring key government portfolios together to end bureaucratic delays.

"I've always supported the concept; it's in the hands of the private sector to come up with proposals and for community consultation to occur," Cr Flowers said.

"We're only just getting back on our feet financially as a country.

"I will still be fighting for this concept.

"The area is in urgent need of reinvigoration.

"The community could benefit from investment into the area.

"You can't stop progress."

Labor candidate Steve Kamper said Rockdale needed a vision that was achievable and one which the community and small business was involved in and consulted over.

"I don't believe Destinations achieved broad community support," Mr Kamper said.

"Enhancing our sporting and recreational facilities and public amenities will be our key focus.

"However, our vision should not be limited to Brighton-Le-Sands but include every suburb in the Rockdale electorate."

Greens candidate Lauren Moore said the controversial pier and marina proposal at Brighton-Le-Sands or Kyeemagh was "as fresh as a bucket of prawns left out in the sun" and "it died a deserved and unlamented death".

Ms Moore said the Greens would oppose commercial development in Botany Bay parklands.

"It is a proposal for private commercial use of a public asset that is treasured by tens of thousands of people who use it every week," Ms Moore said.

I've managed to get a copy of a campaign brochure by John Flowers and he makes no mention of Destinations Rockdale.
