The pavilion will show how aerospace technologies change people's daily lives. It will offer a preview of people's "environmentally friendly, safe and intelligent" future life. The spirit of the Chinese astronauts who are exploring space will be a centerpiece in the pavilion.

hkskyline May 31st, 2009, 07:15 AM USA Pavilion group for Shanghai Expo adds Yum Brands as sponsor in lengthy fundraising quest
27 May 2009
SHANGHAI (AP) - Fine Australian wines, French gourmet dining, Korean kimchee -- and good old American fried chicken and pizza.
Visitors to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo will be able to chow down on American fast food staples, among many other cuisines, with a decision by Louisville, Kentucky-based Yum Brands Inc. to become a sponsor for the U.S. pavilion.
Yum, owner of fast food brands including KFC and Pizza Hut, signed on Tuesday as the first food and restaurant sponsor for the pavilion, as the U.S. fundraising effort dragged on.
Construction has already begun for most national pavilions for the Expo, expected to be the world's largest with up to 70 million visitors. But U.S. organizers are still working to gather needed private sector funding with less than a year before the event opens on May 1, 2010.
The delays have raised eyebrows in China, and drawn worried comments from local officials who are keen to see America represented along with 180 other countries.
A joke circulating in Shanghai before Yum signed on was that the plot allotted for the pavilion, which is meant to be a showcase for American culture, values, and businesses and celebrate U.S.-China friendship, could instead be turned into a U.S.-style fast-food outlet.
It looks like it might be both.
"The United States' presence at the Expo is of great significance not only to the Sino-U.S. relationship, but to the bilateral trade and cultural exchanges between the Chinese and American peoples as well," said Eric Han, KFC brand general manager for Yum's China division.
No financial figures for the agreement were disclosed -- as has been the case for most sponsorship agreements so far. It remains unclear how much more money needs to be raised of the $61 million organizers say is needed to build and operate the pavilion.
Han said he hoped Yum's sponsorship deal would encourage more companies to support the U.S. Expo project.
Other sponsors include St. Paul, Minnesota-based 3M, Dell Inc., General Electric Co. and the USA-China Education, Science & Culture Association, a newly created Chinese-American community group.
U.S. law requires that national exhibits at Expos be funded and operated through nonprofit organizations. Although the U.S. State Department oversees such projects, it cannot use congressionally appropriated funds to build or operate them.
The lack of public funding has complicated efforts to get Expo pavilions built in recent years, and the global downturn has made raising funds doubly hard, despite appeals from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other U.S. officials.
"I hope you will strongly consider joining us in this important endeavor," Clinton said in a recent letter to the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.
China is a key market for Yum, whose KFC outlets have been a hit among Chinese diners since they first opened in Beijing in the early 1990s. Yum's more than 2,100 KFC outlets and more than 350 Pizza Huts in China reported 21.5 billion yuan ($3 billion) in revenues in 2007.
Company executives say they expects Yum's China division to achieve its target of 20 percent profit growth next year.

Migrant life to greet China Pavilion visitors
By Yang Jian | 2009-6-12 | ONLINE EDITION
CHINA'S vast migration from rural to urban areas over the past 30 years will be the theme for the first section of the China Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo.
A senior Expo official yesterday unveiled the exhibition plans at a press conference in the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
The pavilion will have a "core exhibition area" on the top story, an "experience area" on the second story and a "functional area" on the ground, said Chen Xianjin, deputy director general of the bureau.
The main exhibition area in the 63-meter China Pavilion will be its 30-meter upper section.
The Expo organizer said China's achievements in urban development from ancient to modern times will be the core theme of the China Pavilion. Some core philosophies of China's development, such as "constantly striving to become stronger" and "regard nature as the teacher" will be highlighted.
Visitors will first be taken to the top of the pavilion by lifts which will look like trains carrying China's migrant workers to urban towns, Chen said.
At the top visitors will see a film "The Migration of Hundreds of Millions" which will picture the past and present lives of the country's migrant workers.
The film will show Chinese experiences of large-scale migration, he said.
More than 300 million Chinese people have moved to cities from rural areas, an important step of the country's 30-year reform and opening to the outside world, he added.
Other exhibitions on the top floor, which will cover 16,000 square meters, will showcase the conditions of modern Chinese cities, the wisdom that the ancient Chinese used to tackle urban problems and China's future strategy for urban development. Paintings by children will illustrate the possible future look of cities.
The organizer will divide the exhibition into sections like the "Wisdom of History," the "Story of Spring" and the "Hope of Earth," Chen said, adding the organizer is still working on detailed plans.
The "experience area" will cover 8,000 square meters and will feature interactive games, inviting visitors to plan Chinese cities.
The "functional area" will exhibit new technologies that will contribute to a better life.
The organizer is polishing the exhibition plan and will publicize details late this year, Chen said.
Work on the exterior of the pavilion is due to be finished on July 25. Exhibition outfitting will begin on September 30 and be finished before the end of 2009.
More than 9 million people are expected to visit the China Pavilion. The 2010 event will attract a total of 70 million visitors.

Our friend Marcello Silvestre, from Iodice Architetti sent us their design por the Italian Pavillion for the Shanghai World Expo 2010. Silvestre, along with Francesco Iodice and Giuseppe Iodice from Iodice Architetti worked with Giampaolo Imbrighi, Teresa Crescenzi, Antonello De Bonis, and Cosimo Dominelli in the design of the pavillion. The project proposes a building which integrates a typical model of the Italian urban building, with the architectural structure of the Chinese construction game called Shanghai. More images and architect’s description after the break.
The pavilion covers an area of 3.600 square metres and is 18 metres high. Inside it is divided into irregular sections of different dimensions, connected by a steel bridge structure where the connecting galleries are visible. If needed, the structure can be dismantled and reconstructed, on a smaller scale, in another part of the city.
The different sections of the building make up a geometrical variety symbolizing the tradition and regional customs which define the Italian identity: a type of mosaic of which each of the parts show a single picture. The form also highlights the topographic complexity of Italian cities, with its numerous short narrow roads and alleys which suddenly open onto a large square, a characteristic which can also be found in the traditional Chinese urban centres. A psychophysical effect of comfort is given by an internal garden, the presence of water and natural light which spreads throughout the area across the patios and by the walls.

http://en.expo2010.cn/expo/expo_english/participation/ln/images/00035461.jpg http://i44.tinypic.com/2rzue61.jpg
What is Croatia like? What we can think of seems to be the elegant style of soccer genius and the lattice patterns chequered with red and white. A simple movie in the Croatia Pavilion at the Aichi Expo greatly enriches people's knowledge of this strange country and then touches them with its unique national charm.
After entering the Croatia Pavilion, you will see a small rectangular movie hall. The walls around the hall serve as the screen. All the video is about saltern, the origin of life in this coastal country. The sea reflecting diversified colors and lights turns into a wide stretch of shining grains of salt. It is the work site for salt production on Pagu island where heaps of salt is divided into numerous salterns across which carts of salt slowly move...
When visitors are bewildered by the simple and plain pictures, a door will appear on one side of the walls. Led to the main exhibition zone, visitors find a saltern 300 to 400 square meters in size right under their feet. Visitors slowly walk along a wooden path across the saltern while some curious ones stepped on the saltern on purpose, leaving a few footprints, deep or shallow. There are only about 80 visitors each time. Filled with doubts and expectations, they don't speak much, which, together with dark lightings, make the whole pavilion extremely pure.
Reaching the end of the wooden path, visitors find themselves rise slowly with the wooden floor beneath their feet. At the same time, an image of a kite chequered with red and white was projected onto the wall. While everyone's eyes are fixed upon the kite floating around on the walls, the platform is raised to a height of about 5 meters. Looked down, the saltern the visitors have just walked through turns into a huge screen 15×25㎡in size. All the visitors can lean against the fence and watch the video underneath.
The aerial video perfectly fits visitors' position. The visitors feel as if they are the kite flying high over Croatia, enjoying a bird's eye view of the unique sceneries of this nation. Starting from the salterns, the video shows the Adriatic Sea, the Croatian harbor, the ancient streets and towns with red roofs, neatly mowed lawns, high mountains, green orchards... What's amazing is that people in the video such as sportsmen climbing the mountain, countrywomen picking grapes and people enjoying a feast on a farm, all look up and warmly wave to the audience, with broad and subtle smiles of the Croatian people. With the unique creative idea and musical effects, people are intoxicated even if the pictures are not that beautifully made.
The kite reappears at the end of the video, and then gently rests in a saltern. The visitors are enchanted and they seem to start yearning for the strange Croatia and its special culture and customs.
While leaving the Croatia Pavilion, every visitor will get a little pack of salt and a small bottle of seawater, on the packing of which is written a sentence reading "A drop of water, a grain of salt, Croatia". Is it diligence, efforts, fortitude or wisdom? Maybe all. The more succinct, the more profound. This is really worth learning.

The USA Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010 will present a dynamic, emotional story that radiates powerful core values shared by both the Chinese and American people – sustainability, teamwork, health and the fundamental belief that America is a place of opportunity where those who seek to change the world for the better will always thrive and prosper.

US confirms participation in Expo, but funding still unclear
By Ben Overton in News on July 2, 2009 5:25 PM
A flurry of recent activity regarding the US Pavilion at next year's Expo has resulted in US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton confirming the United States' participation in the Expo after the USA Pavilion organizers announced PepsiCo signing on in a US$5 million deal.
http://shanghaiist.com/assets_c/2009/07/US%20Pavilion-thumb-530x300-362841.jpg
However, even with Clinton's support and PepsiCo laying down the cash, it is still unclear exactly how the US plans to finance and implement its plans for the pavilion, which is due at the opening of the Shanghai World Expo in 310 days. The future of the US's involvement in the 2010 Expo has been in doubt for quite a while, as private funding has so far failed to meet the total budget of US$61 million set by the pavilion organizers.
The continued lackluster support has drawn exasperation and prodding from those involved and Chinese officials have repeatedly warned against the possibility of the US's absence from the Expo. To add to the mess, the US has already missed the construction deadline, which will most likely end up being extended until the US can gather enough funds.
In a prolonged drama filled with barely anything but bad news, PepsiCo's announcement is the break that the pavilion organizers have been longing for. As the US Pavilion's newest "Global Partner," PepsiCo will become the pavilion's exclusive non-alcoholic drink and snack provider. Perhaps even more important to the pavilion, though, are the 5 million US dollars that PepsiCo will contribute to the building of the US Pavilion.
Yet, even with Pepsi's vital partnership, no one seems to know exactly how much funding the pavilion really has. The AFP is reporting that the USA Pavilion steering committee has only raised a measly US$2.8 million out the required US$61 million, but has US$36 million "under negotiation." Shanghai Daily, on the other hand, has the total figure at US$35 million collected or pledged, while BusinessWeek is reporting that fundraisers have gathered less than a third (US$20 million) of the required funds.
And of course, the official USA Pavilion website has nothing to say as far as concrete numbers.
At this point, beyond PepsiCo's 5 million, we aren't even really sure if they have any funding at all.

http://i39.tinypic.com/k1xgrr.jpg
Thomas Heatherwick today unveiled the final design for the £13.2 million UK pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo.
Work has already begun on site to build the pavilion, which was originally budgeted at £12 million.
It will feature 60,000 7.5m-long acrylic “hairs” which will move with the wind, and have seeds from Kew Garden’s millennium seed bank embedded in the ends.
Heatherwick described the finished design as the “world’s largest ever hairy building”, with the interior space sharing the atmosphere of “the manuscript room at the British Library”.
He added: “I think you’re going to hunger for simplicity at the expo and we’re going to be looking at quite a serious scientific issue in quite a low tech way.
“Sir John Sorrell and Mark Jones have been working with us on this because this isn’t just a shell. There is a solidity to its content as well.”
Natural light, channelled through the acrylic spines, will light the building during the day while at night the structure will glow from within.
The UK has the biggest seed bank in the world for plants.

US all cashed up and ready for Expo
By Yang Jian | 2009-7-6 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
At last it's official - the United States will sign a participation contract with the 2010 Shanghai World Expo organizer soon as enough money has been raised to build the American pavilion.
Exhibition plans were completed and the US government was right behind the initiative, the head of the American Expo organizer said.
The US was a definite Expo starter, said Ellen Eliasoph, co-chair of Shanghai Expo 2010 Inc, the non-profit company that is undertaking the funding, design, construction and operations of the proposed US pavilion.
President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are both "firmly supportive" of the US pavilion project, she said.
The public visibility of Clinton's support had given a big boost to fund-raising efforts. The Obama administration regarded Expo as a golden opportunity "to launch the new face of America and show how we want to cooperate with the rest of the world," Eliasoph said.
Clinton's appointment of Jose Villarreal, a highly respected attorney and businessman from Texas as the US commissioner general to the Expo, was a sure sign that the US was "ready for the event," Eliasoph said.
Among the first tasks awaiting Villarreal were the signing of the participation and construction contracts, she said.
Construction of the US pavilion could begin any time as the US group had already raised more than US$20 million, the cost of erection of the pavilion building, she said, and had another US$40 million worth of contracts under negotiation.
The total US$61 million budget targeted for the US Expo showcase includes about US$20 million for the production of the pavilion's shows and promotions, with the rest for overall operations during the six-month Expo period.
Construction and fund-raising for the rest of budget would proceed simultaneously, Eliasoph said.
Fund-raising had become easier as the eight sponsors so far were all leaders in their industries, she said. The commitments made by them had been a great incentive to other companies who want to join the Expo party.
The eight US sponsors are General Electric, PepsiCo, 3M, Dell, Yum!, Cargill, Golden Eagle and the USA-China Education, Science and Culture Association.
Several other leading companies have also agreed to sign on, and their names will be released soon.
Raising the required amount of money was only a matter of time, Eliasoph said.
The US plans to build a 5,600-square-meter pavilion, one of the largest at the Shanghai event, but funding is critical as US law prohibits the use of State Department money to pay for participation in World Expos.
The overall theme of the US pavilion is "Rise To The Challenge" and, in keeping with the "Better City, Better Life" theme of the Expo, the challenges depicted will be: creating environmentally sustainable communities, engaging in a healthy lifestyle and using technology to improve the lives of people from all walks of life.
The pavilion experience will have three chapters: the pre-show, the main show and the post show.
The pavilion will incorporate state-of-the-art audio-visual and special-effects technology.
The main show will be a dramatic multi-media experience allowing visitors to experience the American city of the future.
In this future city, visitors will meet a group of people who were inspired by the Shanghai Expo 20 years ago.
The climax of the multimedia show will be a musical celebration of the Expo.
An urban roof garden where US sustainable agriculture and organic food production techniques will be demonstrated, and a special section on "the success of the Chinese in America" are other features.

NEW YORK, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The Committee of 100 (C-100) said Thursday that it has been designated as a Strategic Partner of the USA National Pavilion at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
As a strategic partner, the C-100 will assist the USA National Pavilion in fund raising and support the "Success of the Chinese in America" exhibit in the Pavilion.
The C-100, a national non-partisan, non-profit membership organization comprised of prominent Chinese Americans in a broad range of professions, has been outreaching to members and companies to encourage support of the pavilion.
In addition, the C-100 is raising public awareness of the World Expo by reaching out to the media, business communities, and both U.S. and Chinese government officials.
"Establishment of the strategic partnership is a great beginning to C-100's collaboration with the USA National Pavilion which will serve as an important bridge of understanding between the peoples of the United States and Greater China and as a good opportunity to highlight Chinese American contributions to America," said John S. Chen, Chairman of the C-100.
Ellen R. Eliasoph, co-chair of Shanghai Expo 2010, Inc., said: "We are greatly honored by C-100's support of this effort. C-100's creativity, cross-cultural insights and powerful corporate network will be great assets to the USA National Pavilion."
"The Committee's participation will help ensure the authenticity of our important show component depicting the rich legacy and remarkable achievements of the Chinese community in America," she said. "We know that Chinese visitors to our Pavilion will be especially thrilled and proud to know that C-100 is playing a key role in the project."
The Shanghai World Expo 2010 will be held from May 1-Oct. 31, 2010, with a projected 70 million attendees. This will be China's debut as host of a world expo.
At more than 60,000 square feet (some 5,600 square meters), the USA National Pavilion will be one of the largest pavilions at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. It will showcase American culture, values, and businesses in China's most dynamic city, while at the same time celebrating the friendship between the peoples of the United States and China.
Founded in 1989, the C-100 has dedicated its efforts to a dual mission: encouraging constructive relations between the peoples of the United States and China, and encouraging the full participation of Chinese Americans in all aspects of American life.

LENOVO Group Ltd became a sponsor of World Expo 2010 Shanghai yesterday, agreeing to provide information technology devices and related services to the event.
Meanwhile, Lenovo, which also sponsored the Beijing Olympics last year, plans to make Shanghai its manufacturing center in the north Asia region, Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo's chief executive, said during a signing ceremony yesterday.
Lenovo, China's biggest personal computer maker, signed agreements with the local government yesterday to become Expo 2010's senior sponsor of computing equipment and system operation services, according to both sides.
Lenovo will provide about 10,000 pieces of computing hardware, including servers, notebooks, desktops, printers and peripherals for Expo 2010.
"With a concrete track record and innovative technologies, Lenovo is well placed to handle such large-scale international events," Yang said.
Lenovo has also provided IT services for the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

The city would have a three-level emergency donor team on standby to provide urgent blood donations and support during the 2010 World Expo, officials from the Shanghai Blood Administration Office said yesterday.
The team consists of 2,010 key donors, about 2,000 backup donors and local soldiers and university students.
Authorities are recruiting backup donors from now to the end of this year, while the key donor team was set up on May 1.
Any healthy people aged between 18 and 55 who want to be a donor can contact district-based blood-donation offices. Those who have donated blood before and are able to respond to emergency calls quickly during the event are preferred.
"Expatriates who want to be Expo blood donors can send e-mails to sbao@shblood.org.cn," said Lu Yi, an official from the Shanghai Blood Administration Office. "A bilingual hotline will be launched soon."
The office will oversee drills in all city districts and Chongming County to rectify a Type A and O blood shortage and prepare for Expo.

The Federal Government has added $12 million in funding for Australia’s pavilion at next year’s Shanghai World Expo amid reluctance from business and State and Territory governments to pay for the showcase.
The economic slump has dampened sponsor support for the display, which the Government considers crucial to developing links with China.
The budget for the project is $83 million — much more than countries such as the US, Britain and Canada have said they will spend.
The Government planned initially to spend $61 million and raise $22 million from the private sector and the States and Territories. But it has now lifted its contribution to $73 million.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said: “We are on track to raise $10 million in sponsorship.”

United States now set for Expo
By Yang Jian | 2009-7-10 | ONLINE EDITION
THE United States today signed the long-awaited participation contract with the 2010 Shanghai World Expo organizer to officially confirm it will attend.
"We are not late, we are just in time," Jose Villarreal, the newly appointed Commissioner General for the US participation to the Expo, said after signing the contract with Hong Hao, director general of the Shanghai World Expo Coordination, on behalf of the US government.
The officials from both countries shook hands, toasted each and smiled.
"We finally welcome the 240th confirmed participant to the Shanghai Expo – the United States of America," Hong said excitedly at the signing ceremony.
It had been more than three years since Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao sent an Expo invitation to the US government, he said.
The Expo organizer welcomed the US participation and said he appreciated the enthusiasm the US government, companies and people will bring to the 2010 event, he added.
"Today we can finally say that we are rising to the challenge, we are participating," said Beatrice Camp, the US consul general in Shanghai.
She said the country had actually begun efforts to attend the 2010 event in March, 2008 when the State Department signed a letter of intent with the US Pavilion non-profit group, Shanghai Expo 2010 Inc, to raise funds privately for its Expo showcase. "We all know this would be a challenge, but the global financial crisis has made the task of the US Expo team even more difficult."
"I am personal committed to having a national pavilion that will showcase the best of America and will make both our Chinese hosts as well as Americans proud," Villarreal said.
The commissioner general was appointed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton early this month, and this was widely regarded as a strong indication that the US would attend.
The US group is trying to raise US$61 million as its Expo budget has soared more than half, the commissioner general said.
The budget includes about US$20 million for the construction, another US$20 million for production of the pavilion's shows and promotions, with the rest set aside for overall operations during the six-month Expo period.
The US group will definitely get all the money needed for Expo as the public visibility of Clinton's support has boosted fund-raising efforts.
The US Expo group does not have a Plan A and a Plan B – it has only one plan, that is to build a stand-alone pavilion for the Expo, he told local media.
He said the group has made a detailed timetable to build the pavilion, but declined to say when construction would begin. "We will be on time and schedule," he said.
Construction and fund-raising for the rest of budget would proceed simultaneously, said Ellen Eliasoph, co-chair of Shanghai Expo 2010 Inc, the non-profit company that is undertaking the funding, design, construction and operations of the US pavilion.

18 July 2009
China Daily
SHANGHAI: Construction of the US pavilion began on Friday at the site of the Shanghai Expo, signaling the States' support of next year's event.
"The biggest challenge for the United States to participate in the expo has been tackled," said a jubilant Huang Jianzhi, deputy chief of Shanghai World Expo Coordination Bureau.
"The start of construction shows the strong commitment of the US government and makes fund-raising easier," Huang told China Daily during Friday's groundbreaking ceremony.
On Thursday, Walmart, NYSE Euronext and Intel Corporation all signed up to help fund the US pavilion.
Corporate funding from the three firms and others already on board, as well as money from private donors, will give life to the 6,000-sq-m pavilion, which will explore themes inspired by sustainability, teamwork, health and the values of hard work and opportunity.
To be located opposite the China Pavilion on the Central Promenade, the structure should be complete by year-end, giving time for final touches and the inside to be completed before March.
Organizers of the expo were concerned that the US might be forced to skip the Shanghai Expo because of a 1991 US law that ruled out the use of government money for expo projects. Initially, in part because of the global economic slump, there were concerns that too few corporate sponsors were participating.
The signing of a participation contract with Chinese organizers last week put an end to the speculation.
"Our pavilion will be among the largest and we want it to be one of the best," said US Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke.
"The United States and China enjoy many areas of friendship and cooperation, and we believe our pavilion will deepen that bond. It will provide insight into the life and culture of American people, insights that will intrigue millions of visitors expected at the 2010 World Expo, including visitors from China and all around the world."
The US is among 40 nations that will build stand-alone pavilions.

Poland at the cutting edge
5 August 2009
Shanghai Daily
THE Poland Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo will be "cut out by" scissors rather than be built by concrete and bricks.
When traditional, intricate paper-cut patterns meet simple, geometrical architecture, the result will be the awe-inspiring Poland Pavilion.
The pavilion being inspired by China's, as well as Poland's, traditional paper-cut crafts will be a Polish exhibit in itself. The 3,000-square-meter pavilion, mainly made of wood, kicks off construction yesterday. It will give the impression of a huge paper cut-out building, tilted slightly upward from the ground.
The exterior walls or sides of the oblong quadrilateral structure are patterned like a traditional paper cut-out and are illuminated from within.
Poland is known for its traditional paper-cutting. Polish craftsmen can cut out an intricate pattern continuously, without clipping any piece of paper midway.
"The pavilion design evokes ancient artistry, abstract design and futuristic thinking," said Slawomir Majman, commissioner-general of the Poland Pavilion section of the Shanghai World Expo.
The design, one of 20 proposals, embodies the pavilion theme "People Create Cities," demonstrating the World Expo theme "Better City, Better Life."
The white building will appear to be made from a giant sheet of folded paper, an intricate, folkloric tracing of designs.
A dramatic feature will be the ramp connecting the entrance and the rooftop, which will house an open-air restaurant. Some eco-friendly and healthy, traditional Polish dishes will be served. During the period, the exhibition space will be filled with light filtering in through the cut-out exterior wall patterns.
At night, the pavilion will shine inside out with color. Cut-out figures will seem to be dancing on the wall.
The inner solid walls of the pavilion will function as screens, on which scenes of Polish city life will be projected.
The exhibit will include innovative urban designs that bring people into closer contact with nature and let them interact more easily with others. Visitors will enter an exhibition on the "future of cities." There, the wooden ground-level floor gradually will rise, opening to an auditorium for performances taking place below.
This entry ramp will lead from within to the roof where open-air film screenings, theatrical performances and concerts will be staged.
Green materials
The pavilion will be environmentally friendly, and there will be lots of green living things in the Expo environment. The basic construction material is wood, including the facade with the cut-out patterns that will be cut by laser. Most construction materials are recyclable, and since the pavilion must be removed from the Expo site after the six-month exhibition period, part of the wooden structure will be reconstructed in a Polish city.
The pavilion explores the importance of the "personal" experience between buildings and people.
In addition to Poland's urban achievements in making cities more livable, the pavilion will feature the life and music of Poland's Frederic Chopin (1810-49), best known for the "Blue Danube" waltz among other compositions.
Next year will be the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of this one of the world's greatest and most creative composers. The building will contain a concert hall, auditorium and performance space inside and on the roof.
"Chopin is more than a composer, he represents the nature of the nation," said Majman. "But we will have a very modern interpretation of his masterpieces."
A 15-minute performance with orchestra and choir will resound in the pavilion during the exhibition. A separate concert by Polish composer Piotr Rubik and his band has been planned to celebrate the Polish National Day in May 2010.
A "Shanghai Rhapsody" especially composed for the 2010 Expo will be performed in the pavilion by the Wroclaw Academic Choir directed by Alan Urbanek and Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. People can download and listen to the music at www.expo2010.com.pl. 6 August 2009
Shanghai Daily
SMURFS, the blue elf-like creatures, are ready to serve the Belgium Pavilion as its mascot during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
The Belgian animated creatures, created by Peyo in 1958, hit China in the 1980s with the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series and won countless domestic fans.
"Smurfs are lovely, kind and all good to others. They will not hurt anybody and are good people," said Leo Delcroix, the Belgian commissioner general.
The creatures are popular in both China and Europe and can be a good ambassador between China and Belgium, he added.
People dressed as Smurfs will welcome visitors while virtual Smurfs will present the pavilion's multimedia shows, he said.
The Belgian Expo team will decide whether a male or female Smurf would be the official mascot before naming it.
The pavilion will prepare an exhibition of all Belgium's famous cartoon characters, including Tintin, created by Herge in 1929.
Construction started yesterday on the cube-shaped pavilion, which will have 5,000 square meters of space.
A fifth of the space will be taken up by the European Union's exhibition, its Expo debut outside its member countries.
At the ground-breaking ceremony yesterday, officials from the Shanghai World Expo bureau, Belgium and EU as well as construction workers and a Belgian girl left their fingerprints, which will be showcased during the Expo.
Visitors will enjoy the "bon vivant" lifestyle of the continent. A mini chocolate factory will make authentic Belgium chocolate free for visitors.
The pavilion aims to attract investment from China as well as to promote Belgian investors to China, according to Didier Reynders, Belgian vice prime minister and minster of finance.
the spliff fairy August 8th, 2009, 04:11 PM Basically what the countries invest in this expo is a goldmine - many Chinese will visit this in order to catch a glimpse of the foreign lands they (yet) have no idea will offer them. As China will one day become the largest source of international tourists by 2020 (100 million), these countries stand alot to gain by widening their markets - tourism is after all the worlds biggest industry. The Little Mermaid statue being transported from Copenhagen, that will impress and educate the crowds could well be one of the best and most lucrative marketing ploys ever staged.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The "City of Life and Death" director Lu Chuan will direct an eight-minute theme film of the China Pavilion of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, Lu's assistant said on Saturday.
The 38-year-old director said the film would display "China's urbanization process over the past three decades."
The film will be shown in a cinema on the top story of the 49-meter high China Pavilion.
Although Lu is adept at documentary films, he said this time he would try a "poetic" one.
"During the eight minutes, it is a mission impossible to record the history of Chinese urbanization," he said.
Instead, the short film will present the audience a sense of the "massive scale and grand style" of the urbanization process, and the "unprecedented spirit and strong conviction" of the country's urban constructors, Lu said.
According to Lu, the film's production team is similar to that of "City of Life and Death," Known as "Nanjing, Nanjing" in Chinese, but all actors are new faces to the audience.
He said two leading roles of the film could represent Chinese people's "sunshine, energetic, confident and handsome" image.
Lu's talent has been greatly shown in his latest hit "City of Life and Death", which took him nearly four years and cost 11 million U.S. dollars to produce.
It is about the Nanjing massacre of Chinese civilians by the Imperial Japanese Army nearly 72 years ago.

August 29, 2009 00:10 AM
SHANGHAI, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen and Shanghai's City Council deputy secretary-general Hong Hao on Friday performed the ground-breaking ceremony for Malaysia's pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo here.
The pavilion, with the theme of "1Malaysia: Harmonised City Living" will be completed by the year end.
Dr Ng said Malaysia's theme was in tune with the expo theme, "Better City, Better Living", as it showcased the strengths of Malaysia's city living.
"When it comes to city living, people want good quality of life. Therefore, the concept of the pavilion portrays Malaysia's harmonious multicultural society, elements of nature, modern facilities and the nation's achievements," she told Malaysian reporters after the ground-breaking ceremony.
Dr Ng said Malaysia's pavilion would also showcase the country's various tourist attractions, services and products, as the aim was not just to promote its tourism industry but also as a destination for trade and investment.
As such, she said, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) would take charge of showcasing the latest developments of Malaysian products such as palm oil, rubber, electronic goods and timber.
Dr Ng said the design of the pavilion combined cultural and heritage elements, including Negeri Sembilan's architectural design, with modernity.
The 3,000-square metre Malaysia Pavilion is expected to receive 10,000 to 15,000 visitors daily, during the World Expo to be held from May 1 to Oct 31 next year.

Top prize for the 5 yuan ticket is 100,000 yuan, while 200,000 yuan is the top prize for a 10 yuan ticket and 300,000 yuan for a 20 yuan ticket.
Up to 65 percent of revenue from ticket sales will be pooled as prize money. The rest will be donated to the May 12, 2008, earthquake-affected areas, according to rules set by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs.
Tickets would incorporate World Expo elements and may become collectors' items, the ministry said.

I see it as China is sort of reviving the Expo to its former glory by putting such a huge effort into it! It seems as if Milan is following in Shanghai's footsteps and is taking its hosting in 2015 very seriously as well!
I'll be here in 2010 for sure. :okay:
well, after Beijing Olympics, China now somehow has the reputation of turning mediocrity into miracle
it's just as if China is trying continuing its legend by saying 'hey, we could make a jaw-dropping Olympiad, we'll surprise you with a stunning EXPO too! It'll be your loss if you miss the party!'
glad the US won't be missing it!

hkskyline September 8th, 2009, 04:25 AM Haibao revealed in cartoon series
7 September 2009
Shanghai Daily
http://en.expo2010.cn/expo/expoenglish/mascot/node2091/images/00026315.jpg
MORE people, especially children, have started to recognize Haibao, the mascot of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai. With the event coming closer, the sea-blue, elf-like figure waving two hands and with a shock of hair sticking up at the top of his "head," like an unruly curl, has become popular among more people around the world.
But do you know whether Haibao is a boy or girl? The mascot is lively or shy? What is the mascot's favorite food? Where does Haibao come from and does Haibao have any superpowers?
A 52-episode cartoon about the mascot from the Expo organizer will give all these answers next spring. The organizer invested more than 10 million yuan (US$1.46 million) in the cartoon's production to expand the figure's personality and "legendary" experiences.
As a result, it is hoped the mascot will become more than a statue at tourism spots for people to pose with. It will be an enlivened creature able to smile, to cry, to be excited and to be angry.
Haibao is a seven-year-old boy creature from the sea. He has all the characters of a human child at the same age - he is friendly, clever, lively and curious about everything, as well as capricious sometimes, revealed cartoon director Hong Bing, associate professor of Shanghai Theater Academy China.
The cartoon series "Coming Haibao" will be telecast on about 200 channels around world next spring.
In the series, Haibao will use his wisdom and superpower - to become a robot or other different shapes - to battle a bad character, named Chou Chou (literally means ugly in Chinese) who intends to invade the Rainbow City, Haibao's hometown.
The Rainbow City is originated from Shanghai. Many iconic venues of the city, such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Jing Mao Tower, as well as the Expo Shanghai site, will appear in the series.
In the story, Haibao will live in a Shanghai longtang (lane) house with another friend, Pi Pi, and his parents. The mascot will gradually find his superpowers and lead his friends to fight against the invaders.
Haibao's favorite food is xiaolongbao, or steamed buns, a traditional Shanghai snack.
And the biggest enjoyment for the mascot is to have a bath.
His best pal is a five-year-old girl, named Bei Bei, a charismatic and clever girl. As the series develops, the little mascot even falls in love with the girl.
His curl will tell his mood - it will turn up when Haibao is angry and will whirl when the mascot is thinking.
"I've tried to give more human personality to the mascot to make people feel that he is not an elf but a boy," said Hong. He said the directors' team originally cast Haibao as an "all mighty god" who could save the world.
Haibao has to keep drinking water because he comes from the sea. When he becomes tired, his blue skin will fade to a lighter color while his body will shrink, but he will soon be rejuvenated after plunging into water. In the winter, Haibao will need to wear a thick coat, otherwise he will freeze.
His biggest weakness is that he is extremely ticklish. Sometimes, Haibao will become sad because he does not have a mother.
The cartoon figures of kung fu movie star Jackie Chan, pianist Lang Lang and NBA star Yao Ming - all official Expo Shanghai Promotion Ambassadors - will appear in the cartoon to help Haibao.
Chan will use his kung fu to fight the robot invaders. Yao will lead a basketball team to compete with a team made up of aliens from other planets.
When the enemies become too strong, Lang will use his beautiful music to move and overcome them.
The three super stars will appear in many episodes and they will dub their own voices for their characters.
The story features a "Puppet Planet" which will be the biggest enemy of Haibao's Rainbow City. The planet is on the edge of collapsing because it relies too much on modern technology but neglects to love and communicate with its inhabitants.
The story will be a good lesson to children to encourage them to take more care of others, Hong said.
At the end of the cartoon, the bad characters will be "reclaimed" by Haibao, rather than being defeated.
The cartoon's target audience is children between six to 10 years old, but adults will also be entertained by the funny dialogue and interesting plots.
Introductions of major Expo pavilions at the 2010 world fair will be featured in the cartoon. For example, a storyline will be based in the China Pavilion of the Expo. The interiors featured in the cartoon will reflect the real pavilion, Hong said.
The cartoon will be telecast ahead of Expo, so it will offer a good chance to preview the Expo site, he said.
Hong said the organizer would make a movie about Haibao which will be telecast around the world for the duration of the 184-day event.

11 September 2009
Shanghai Daily
The Shanghai Expo organizer is to build two parks along the Huangpu River in the Pudong section of the Expo site for visitors to enjoy a cooler environment in summer - a temperature 5 degrees Celsius lower than other parts of the site.
The organizer yesterday unveiled the design of the two main parks - the 230,000-square-meter Expo Garden and 140,000-square-meter Houtan Park - that will cover the 2-kilometer riverside.
More than 5,000 tall trees will provide shelter from the sun and provide natural air-conditioning by channeling the wind through the site, said Yu Zhiyuan, director of the Expo park project. Purified water from the Huangpu River will be sprayed on the ground to lower temperatures.

city_thing September 12th, 2009, 11:48 AM This is one amazing looking place, I really hope they keep all the pavilions afterward.
I hate to break it to you Spliff Fairy, but I don't think they're allowed to [keep the pavillions] under the rules of hosting the expo. I'd normally do some googling to find out the truth, but my connection is running slow tonight so you're just going to have to take my word
Anyway, I'm 99.99% sure that the pavillions need to be removed after the expo ends. It's a stupid rule, and I don't see the reasoning behind it. I sincerely hope that I'm wrong.
Brisbane tore down the pavillions after Expo '88. That might have just been because no one wants bad 80's architecture raping such a prime inner city area though. When Melbourne hosted the Expo though (in 1880) the buildings were retained, though modified. Australia's first parliament actually used the Expo building (which is now under UNESCO world heritage listing) for its first sitting as a federated nation in 1901.

It's expensive for a student like me. I was there last year but it's not something I can afford to do every year. Unless there are tickets around 500 euro or lower.
yunowu September 12th, 2009, 05:58 PM I have visited Shanghai many times in the past. Looking forward to Expo.....:)
Severiano September 12th, 2009, 06:12 PM I can see why the host city is not allowed to keep the buildings of the Expo. The government of the country is responsible for building the pavilion, they don't want to fund a gift for the host country, they would rather use the pavilion to show off their own country and then tear it down when they are done.
hkskyline September 13th, 2009, 06:04 AM So another reason why I need to get to Shanghai in 2010.

hkskyline September 19th, 2009, 01:20 PM Exporters to build pavilion for Shanghai Expo
19 September 2009
The Korea Herald
SHANGHAI, China - Korea's leading exporters yesterday broke ground on a joint exhibition pavilion for Expo 2010 Shanghai that kicks off in May for a 5-month run.
A group of 12 companies including Samsung Electronics, Kumho Asiana, Shinsegae, POSCO, Hyundai Motors and Korea Electric Power Corp. will build a joint exhibition facility in the Puxi region of the city. Hyosung, Doosan, LG, STX, Lotte and SK Telecom also plan to take part in the project. About 30 billion won ($24.8 million) will be invested from businesses' pockets while the Korea International Trade Association, an influential business lobbying group, takes charge of overall coordination.
The joint pavilion of South Korean exporters is one of two exhibition sites to be built exclusively for businesses. An association of Japanese businesses also plans to build an independent pavilion during the expo. The Korean pavilion, however, will draw more attention as leading global companies such as Samsung and POSCO take part while smaller mid-sized Japanese companies participate in events, officials said.
The joint pavilion will visualize the future city driven by green technology and growth mechanisms, Oh Young-ho, vice chairman of the Korea International Trade Association, said at the ground breaking ceremony.
The project will also enhance corporate images of Korean firms in China which have already reached the local market in previous years. China is Korea's No.1 export destination.
Businesses will showcase their strategies for making city life better by using renewable energy, smart grid technology and intellectual transportation systems in the future, officials said. Companies are not allowed to directly display their own products during the exhibition according to expo rules.
The three-story building consists of four halls, each designed to promote advanced green technology developed by Korean companies and their corporate vision for the future.
The construction of the Korean business pavilion will be environment-friendly from the foundation work to demolition process.
The tent material planned to cover the exterior of the pavilion will be recycled as grocery bags and will be distributed in supermarkets such as E-mart in the city.
The planned participation of North Korea in the upcoming expo also drew attention.
North Korea is expected to participate at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, for the first time.
"North Korea will open its national pavilion on a 1,000-square-meter area under the theme of 'capital of Joseon, Pyeongyang,'" Xu Wei, spokesperson of Shanghai Expo 2010.
The official did not elaborate on the funding of the North Korean pavilion but the communist government will rent the exhibition space instead of constructing its own building.
The World Expo Shanghai 2010 is expected to draw 70 million visitors with more than 230 participating countries. The theme of the exposition will be "Better City, Better Life," and the event is scheduled to take place from May 1-Oct. 31, 2010.
The Chinese government plans to spend 28.6 billion yuan ($4.18 billion) on the expo.

Participating Organizations
The Japan Industry Pavilion is a large-scale exhibition site sponsored by a coalition of privately-owned companies and municipalities. To Japan, China has been one of its most indispensible partner historically, culturally and in the current economy and industry standpoint. The Expo to be held in China should be an opportunity for corporations and municipalities to exhibit their wide array of wisdom, technology and aesthetic senses as much as the governments shall unveil their official exhibitions.
Based on such aims, the Japan Industry Pavilion is structured through an organization (coalition company) comprised of various corporations and municipalities.
There are currently 14 companies funding for the Japan Industry Pavilion, but there are still available lots for 3 to 4 companies to participate in the sponsorship. The Japan Industry Pavilion plans to continue soliciting sponsors to better strengthen and diversify its exhibition.
The Japan Industry Pavilion's Choice and Reason of Its Location
The Japan Industry Pavilion is located near the western entry gate in the Puxi district area of the Shanghai Expo.
The location has previously been the site of Jiangnan Shipyard Plant, and within the vicinity is a large building with dimensions 170m x 84m x 25m. The Pavilion is located on the eastern side of the site, boasting 4,000m² in exhibition area. The Japan Industry Pavilion selected such location for 3 reasons:
(1) Convenient location in close proximity to the entrance gate near the city's main subway line.
(2) Demonstration of the Pavilion's environmental-conscious philosophy is feasible through reusing construction
(3) Appealing exhibition potential is available through the immense space consisting of approximately 100,000m²
Theme and Concept
The theme of the Japan Industry Pavilion is “Better Life from Japan”. The theme aims to convey and demonstrate the sophisticated technology and aesthetic senses of Japanese industries, the luxurious quality of Japanese products and services, and the beautiful living landscapes of regional Japan.
The concepts representing such theme are “Reuse”, “Space” and “Pulse”: the Pavilion will demonstrate the Japanese people's ancient reusing philosophy that placed great care on possessions, exhibit various space structure seen in Japanese mountains, rivers, streets, houses and gardens, as well as demonstrate time management methodology that represents the pulsation of Japanese culture. The Japan Industry Pavilion shall embody special structuring unlike anywhere else .
J-Sense=The Real Japan Today
The aesthetic mottos representing the Japan Industry Pavilion is the globally known phrases “Kirei,” “Kawaii” and Kimochii”, together recognized as “J-sense”.
Although Japan was previously famous for its traditional and simplistic culture and craftsmanship as well as its pureness of Japanese mentality, Japan today in the 21 st century is bursting with new sensations. The Japan Industry Pavilion interprets these new sensations as J-sense, and aims to exhibit the real Japan today.
Design Plan of the Japan Industry Pavilion=Pursuit for an Innovative Exposition Image
The Japan Industry Pavilion will construct an independent building within the vast space of the former site of Jiangnan Shipyard. The construction will fully demonstrate the Pavilion's philosophy to reuse resources and will be built with reusable single-pipe structuring.
This design plan also enables flexible representation of what should be a three-dimensional canvas and/or large three-dimensional stage. The Japan Industrial Pavilion proposes an “international exposition in the reusing epoch”, transcending ”international exposition in the single-use epoch”.
Structuring of the Japan Industry Pavilion
The Japan Industry Pavilion densely comprises of various exhibition areas.
(1) Interactive Area
Pavilion visitors will first enter the Interactive Area and be introduced to Japanese industries and regional culture. They will be free from idle time when waiting in line.
(2) Theme Exhibition Area
The visitors will proceed to the Theme Exhibition Area, where they will be greeted with a surprise. The “Crane Eyes” and “Turtle Eyes” invite the viewers to experience Japan with the new J-sense.
(3) Main Exhibition Area
Participating corporations each display their exhibitions within their spaces in this area. Each exhibition represents different views of the Japan Industry Pavilion's wisdom and aesthetic senses.
(4) Gourmet Area
The Gourmet Area is designed to let visitors savor the beauty of Japanese food. The area provides authentic and traditional Japanese cuisine as well globally popular J-sense foods with the tranquil view of Japanese gardening in the latest style. ”Delicious” in written Japanese is represented in Chinese characters meaning “beautiful” and “taste”.
(5) Retail Area
The Retail Area, with futuristic and upscale ambience, sells merchandise that Shanghai Expo visitors from around the world, together with local Chinese visitors, will surely be tempted to try.
9.Time Structure of the Japan Industry Pavilion
Scrupulous time representation is another evident feature in the Japan Industry Pavilion. The whole Pavilion operates in 3-minute periods and is designed to move approximately 70 spectators in conjunction. This creates harmonized progression, or “Japanese-style orderliness”, instead of compulsory control. The Japan Industry Pavilion aims to exhibit the beauty of “Space x Time”.
Representing Players in the “World Wisdom & Beauty Championships”
If the Olympic Games are the “World Strength & Performance Championships”, the International Expositions shall be the “World Wisdom & Beauty Championships”. The producers of the Expositions are equivalent to the Olympic team manager, and the designers are equivalent to the team players.
The Japan Industry Pavilion comprises of members best suited to be part of the Japanese team. As a team representing the country of Japan, it cannot leave itself to subcontracting businesses and corporations. Its lineup consists of members that best represent the Japanese industry and regions for the Shanghai Expo, or “history's largest international event”.
“Remunerative Contribution to Society”
Participating in International Expositions may be the greatest way to contribute to society. The exhibitions will entertain, culturally educate and demonstrate beauty to millions of visitors from around the world. The contributions should be remunerative, however, as corporations and municipalities are funding them. PR and market development of Japanese industries. Revitalization of Japan's regional areas. Enhanced morale of employees and residents. The Pavilion believes that the pressure to realize “beneficial” societal contribution in such holistic standpoints is the key to success.

rizalhakim October 21st, 2009, 10:45 AM Malaysia's Pavilion To Promote Tourism And Trade
The 3,000-square metre Malaysia Pavilion is expected to receive 10,000 to 15,000 visitors daily, during the World Expo to be held from May 1 to Oct 31 next year.

hkskyline November 11th, 2009, 03:00 PM Metro Line 7 opening slowed
11 November 2009
Shanghai Daily
CITY'S Metro Line 7 is likely to have its announced November opening delayed because a quarter of its stations are still unfinished.
Seven stations out of the line's 28 are not ready, Metro officials said yesterday.
"We cannot rush to a completion concerning all the uncertainties," said Zhu Jingwei, the line's engineer in chief.
He did not give an exact opening time, but said it would be ahead of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
Shanghai Shentong Group, the subway operator, told local media in early September the line would run a pilot operation by the end of November.
Shanghai's subway system is one of the fastest-growing in the world. It is planned to be the biggest by 2012. It currently runs eight lines over 250 kilometers of track, carrying nearly 4 million passengers a day.
Line 7 is among three new Metro lines to be put into use before the Expo starts next May, said the authorities.
So far, the other two lines, Line 11 and the second phase of Line 9, have not had their schedule changed.
Line 7 will run through the city's northern Baoshan District to Pudong New Area, with 28 stations opening before the Expo, said the operator. Five more stations will be added after the event.
The line will connect with seven other subway lines on eight stations. Locals and Expo visitors will be able to take the line to the south-east side of the Expo site.
Line 7 is expected to carry about 1 million passengers a day when it's done, second only to existing Line 1 and 2, according to Zhu.

Denmark plans a real sea trip
By Yang Jian | 2009-12-1 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
DENMARK will bring a million liters of seawater from the Copenhagen Harbor to a pool in its pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the pavilion's chief architect said yesterday.
The water - an apt setting for the iconic statue "Little Mermaid," which will similarly make the trip from Denmark - will demonstrate Copenhagen's success in cleaning up its harbor that was polluted with industrial wastes 20 years ago but is safe for swimming today.
The steel structure of Denmark's 3,000-square-meter pavilion was finished yesterday.
The swimming pool at the center of the open-air pavilion will be 4 to 5 meters deep, and will resemble the sights of Copenhagen harbor where the mermaid statue resides, said chief architect Bjarke Ingels.
A shallow pool will be built beside for children.
Visitors can sit beside the pool and put their foot into the water, just as Danes do in the Copenhagen Harbor, Ingels said.
A purification system under the pool will ensure the seawater is clean during the 184-day event.
The pavilion is a double spiral with pedestrian and cycling lanes that will take the visitors from the ground through two ramps, up to a level of 12 meters, and down again.
The pool is in the middle of the pavilion.
About 300 bicycles will be brought to the pavilion to be ridden for free during the Expo, officials said.
By showcasing Copenhagen's clean harbor water and city bikes, the pavilion will invite visitors to experience the sustainable life style of Denmark, Troels Lund Poulsen, the Danish minister for the environment, said at the topping-out ceremony.
A Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei, is making an installation to replace the statue at the edge of Copenhagen Harbor during the Expo.

hkskyline December 16th, 2009, 05:07 PM DESIGN, CONCEPT OF TAIWAN PAVILION FOR SHANGHAI EXPO REVEALED

TAIPEI, Dec 16 Asia Pulse - The design and concept of Taiwan's pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 was officially revealed Tuesday in Taipei, with high-ranking officials from the expo's organizing committee coming to promote the much-anticipated event.
The Taiwan pavilion, which is designed by renowned Taiwanese architect Lee Chu-yuan, features a theme revolving around nature and soul.
The outside structure of the pavilion resembles a "sky lantern" or "Kong Ming lantern, " which people fly during Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival to pray for happiness, safety and health. It is a steel structure covered with smart film, a new kind of smart glass technology that adjusts to light under electric pressure to switch between a transparent and a semi-opaque state.
Hanging down from the roof of the Taiwan Pavilion is a gigantic globe made of a panoramic light-emitting diode (LED) screen, which will display projections of Taiwan's natural and cultural images.
Lee said that while the 20th Century world expos empathized on technology civilization, the 21st Century expos should be focused on the spiritual and soulful aspects of human beings.
Wang Chih-kang, chairman of the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) -- which is in charge of the Taiwan pavilion project -- said that Taiwan's participation in the 2010 World Expo is of special significance, as it will be the first time in 40 years that it was invited.
Taiwan had not participated in world expos over the past four decades because the country is not a member of the Paris-based Bureau of International Exhibitions. It was blocked from becoming a member of the Bureau due to opposition from China, which considers Taiwan a part of its territory and objects to Taiwan participating in groups whose members are normally countries. With improving relations between Beijing and Taipei, however, Taiwan received invitation from China on May 21 this year to take part in the event it is hosting.
Wang noted that the construction of the Taiwan pavilion is going according to schedule, with the exhibition hall's steel structure completed on Dec. 10. It took less than four months for workers to finish the pavilion's steel structure, since construction started in August, according to Wang, adding that the exhibition will be installed by the end of March and trial operations will start in April.
Zhong Yanqun, a deputy director of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai Executive Committee, was among a delegation of the Shanghai Expo organizing committee who attended the ceremony to officially reveal what the Taiwan pavilion will look like.
With 137 days to go before the Shanghai Expo opens, Zhong expressed great confidence in the event, saying that the construction and preparation work are going smoothly and that the event is expected to attract a record 70 million visitors.
"I sincerely invite people from Taiwan to visit the 2010 Shanghai Expo," Zhong said. "As the events emblem is trying to represent, the expo will not only serve as the platform for cultural exchanges, but also a special occasion for people from around the world to gather joyfully together."

12m-ticket sale elates Expo
By Yang Jian | 2009-12-19 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
TICKET sales for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo have gone beyond expectations to exceed 12 million, said the event's organizer, who urged people not to believe anyone claiming to provide tickets cheaper than the official prices.
Travel agencies, which will qualify for discounts as group ticket buyers, won't be able to get the tickets until the 2010 event begins. That means nobody will get discounted tickets before the event, said Chen Xianjin, deputy director general of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
Chen spoke to media as seven Chinese provinces started arranging their exhibitions at China's joint-provincial pavilion.
The bureau has noticed that some people were selling tickets online claiming to be cheaper than the official prices, said Chen. However, so far not a single fake ticket had been discovered among those sold.
The bureau urged people to buy their tickets at the more than 5,300 outlets of four major ticket agents - China Mobile, China Telecom, China Post and the Bank of Communications - to avoid buying fake tickets.
The Expo's planners had set a target of selling more than 10 million tickets by the end of the year.
About 55 percent of the tickets were bought by people in the Yangtze Delta Region. Shanghai accounted for 20 percent.
A standard ticket to the Expo costs 160 yuan (US$23.43), but people can enjoy a 20 yuan discount until the end of this year. The discount will be 10 yuan from January to the opening of the Expo in May.

MukiKaki December 21st, 2009, 10:05 PM Russian pavilion
In 2008 according to the results of the contest for the best architectural idea of the pavilion the architect bureau "P.A.P. ER architectural team" was admitted as the winner among twenty three architect workshops of the country.
According to the chosen architectural project an idea of three-parts became the foundation of the Russian pavilion composition solution. The pavilion consists of three main elements: 12 white-gold towers, the cube "hovering in the clouds" lying on the foundations of all twelve towers and the internal installation.
Project renders.

http://www.expo2010-russia.ru/images/w655/newexpo2010/photo/image/344
The pavilion towers are going up symbolizing rapidly growing megapolises with skyscrapers of nonlinear architecture. White-gold color of the towers resembles historical images of the Russian architecture, perforation of the upper tower parts is created basing on ethnic ornaments of the nations populating Russia.
The pavilion plan is similar to Slavic settlements, it symbolizes "the flower of life" or the sun, roots of "the world tree" (a spreading oak among the Slavs) where "the life heavens" lie. The towers "roots" are oriented to the center of the composition and support "the civilization cube" connected with a symbol "man".

The elements of the cube external decoration can move and that organizes huge surfaces of "the living facade" which by reflecting the sky, the towers, greenery and people will create an image of a giant living being at daytime. At night with the help of special lighting even more stunning effect of the changing light-color-dynamic screen is created.

hkskyline January 4th, 2010, 04:27 PM Clinton boosts chances of US presence at Shanghai Expo
Fund-raising effort has netted $54m for pavilion
3 January 2010
The Boston Globe
WASHINGTON - In the hectic last week before she became secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton squeezed in a Bon Jovi benefit concert in New York, part of a frantic effort to pay off the debt from her presidential campaign. No sooner had she arrived at the State Department than Clinton discovered she needed to start raising money all over again.
This time, the cash-starved beneficiary was not her own campaign but the United States, which needed $61 million to finance the construction of a national pavilion at a world's fair in Shanghai. Under federal law, no public money could be used. And Clinton, as a federal official, could no longer solicit private financial donations herself.
So she turned to her well-established network of Clinton fund- raisers, and after negotiating with the State Department's lawyers about what she could legally do herself to support the project, she mounted an ambitious fund-raising campaign that has netted nearly $54 million in barely nine months.
With multimillion-dollar pledges from PepsiCo, General Electric, Chevron, and other US corporations, the United States is on track to open a sleek, 60,000-square-foot pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010, which runs from May through October.
The prospect of the nation's chief diplomat asking for money worried government lawyers, according to officials. Referring to the first secretary of state, one lawyer asked, "Would Thomas Jefferson do this?" They imposed strict limits on the kinds of calls or other contacts she could make, allowing her to promote the pavilion but prohibiting any one-on-one appeals for cash.
Despite those restrictions, and a dismal economy, Clinton is closing in on her $61 million goal. She is clearly proud of the effort, which staved off what could have been a rupture in American- Chinese relations. In a year in which she has mostly worked to prove herself a loyal member of the Obama team, the campaign also showcases her enduring political drawing power.
"The idea, for many people, of raising more than $50 million would seem really daunting," Clinton said in an interview. "Maybe because I had participated in raising so much money in the past, I wasn't daunted by it."
By all accounts, the effort to build a national pavilion was near death at the end of the Bush administration. The near-collapse of the global economy, the proximity of the expo to the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and the general ambivalence of the State Department toward these events had left USA Pavilion, the nonprofit group in charge of the project, with little money.
"There is a sense in the US that Americans got disenchanted" with world's fairs, said Nick Winslow, a former Warner Bros. theme park executive who is the president of USA Pavilion.
With deadlines passing, the Chinese advanced the Americans money to conduct technical work for the pavilion. They raised the issue with former president Jimmy Carter when he visited China last January, pressing him to get a message to President Obama.
Enter Clinton, who made her first trip as secretary of state to Beijing in February and was eager to talk about trade, climate change, and the North Korean nuclear threat. Instead, she got an earful about how bad it would be if the United States did not have a presence at the expo.
For the Chinese, the expo is a bookend to the Olympics. Shanghai is spending $45 billion to transform the city, even more than Beijing spent preparing for the games. Nearly 200 countries have signed on to take part, leaving only the United States and Andorra as potential no-shows.
"I was dumbfounded that so little attention had been paid to it," Clinton said. "Everyone knows China is going to be an enormously powerful player in the 21st century. They have an expo, which is a kind of rite of passage that countries like to do to show they have arrived. We're not there? What does that say? I mean, it would have been a terrible message."
She said she did not relish the prospect of more fund-raising - "When would it ever end?" she recalled asking herself - but she promised Chinese officials that she would try to raise the money.
The last time the United States took part in a world's fair, in Aichi, Japan, in 2005, half the cost of the national pavilion was underwritten by Toyota.
Fred Wertheimer, a political fund-raising specialist, said he was satisfied that a difficult situation was handled properly.
"This appears to be an effort by the State Department to deal with a complicated diplomatic problem rather than some kind of inappropriate conduct," he said. "It would have been far better if the US government was able to pay for the activity involved, but that does not appear to have been the case."
hkskyline January 7th, 2010, 03:55 PM Fire response time at Expo just 3 minutes
7 January 2010
Shanghai Daily
FIRE engines will be able to reach any fire inside the World Expo site within three minutes, two minutes faster than the city's average speed, local authorities said yesterday.
Five permanent fire control stations, four temporary ones and a fire control port on the 5.28-square-kilometer Expo site will be able to spot a fire within a minute and send firemen to the scene in three minutes during the six-month event, said the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau.
A new amphibian fire control station at the Expo site - the first in the city - will be put into use in March.
The Linyi station, at the Pudong section near the Nanpu Bridge, will have a port for three fireboats, and will watch for fire not only on land, but on the Huangpu River, which bisects the Expo site.
About 60 percent of the construction of the Expo fire-control buildings has been completed, and the rest will be ready in April, according to Zhou Meiliang, an official with the bureau.
Qian Bin, also of the fire control bureau, said Shanghai has built 42 stations in the past six years at a cost of nearly 1 billion yuan (US$146 million).
By May 1, Expo's opening day, the city will have 120 stations. Still to come: The Hongqiao station, opening in April. It will function as a fire control hub, covering the Great Hongqiao area, including Changning and part of Minhang and Qingpu districts.
Shanghai has a higher incidence of fire accidents than most places in China because of the large number of people, goods and businesses, said Chen Fei, director of the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau.
But the scarcity of land in the downtown area and the high cost of relocation are hampering construction of new stations, said Qu Weikang, another official of the bureau.

hkskyline February 4th, 2010, 07:54 AM China strives for first 'green' Expo
3 February 2010
Agence France Presse
China, the world's number one emitter of greenhouse gases, aims to hold the first "green" World Expo in Shanghai, as the sprawling metropolis tries to shed its polluted past and become eco-friendly.
With less than three months to go before Expo opens on May 1, an army of workers is hurrying to turn what was once China's oldest shipyard into an environmentally friendly oasis in the heart of the country's biggest city.
Solar power, recycled rainwater, hybrid engine buses -- organisers and countries participating in the six-month event, expected to draw up to 100 million visitors, are sparing no effort to create a "Better City, Better Life."
"Green thinking, protecting the environment, harmony, low carbon -- these are ideas that not only will we display at Expo, but we need to make each visitor feel them," said Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng.
It will be China's largest solar generation project, said Xu Bo, assistant commissioner general for Expo.
Carbon dioxide emissions will be significantly reduced as a result of the measures taken, said Xu.
Several Expo pavilions have been designed to harness the sun's rays.
Solar panels cover the roof of China's national pavilion, "The Oriental Crown," a 60-metre-tall red upside-down pyramid -- one of a handful of buildings that will remain at the 5.3-square-kilometre (two-square-mile) site.
The separate urbanisation theme pavilion -- big enough to house four passenger planes -- is covered in solar panels, and all the lighting used to illuminate the building at night is energy-efficient.
Organisers say the two buildings alone will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2,500 tonnes by generating the equivalent in electricity of burning 1,000 tonnes of coal -- still Shanghai's main source of power.
The exterior of Japan's pavilion, which officials compare to a giant purple silkworm cocoon, is an intricate layer of flexible solar cells designed to generate between 20 and 30 kilowatts per hour.
The facade of the Swiss Pavilion also experiments with solar batteries that emit flashes once fully charged. The Swiss building also takes rooftop gardens to a new level with a rooftop meadow.
As a sign of the official willingness to make the environment a priority, authorities have warned that factories in the Yangtze River Delta up to 300 kilometres (186 miles) away could be shuttered if on-site air quality is sub-par.
"We'll monitor air quality each day and if it's negative, we'll take emergency measures, including production control or even shutting down certain heavy-polluting companies," said Zhang Quan, head of Shanghai's environmental protection bureau.
Perhaps the most eye-catching eco feature at the Expo site is "Sun Valley" -- visitors are greeted at the main entrance by six 40-metre-tall steel and plastic funnels.
The transparent vase-like structures channel the sunlight and breeze underground to provide natural light and cooling.
They also collect rainwater that will be used to flush toilets and run sprinklers for the vast green spaces that cover a third of the venue.
Beneath "Sun Valley," an underground network of 700 kilometres of pipes will use thermal energy from the earth and river water to provide natural heating and cooling for the site, organisers said.
For transportation, visitors will be ferried around in buses with hybrid engines, and a Chinese electric bicycle manufacturer has donated 100 electric cars and 300 electric bikes for Expo staff.
Shanghai's green initiatives do not stop at the Expo gates -- the city is striving to become a model for sustainable development in China with flagship projects such as an offshore wind farm built southwest of the city.
In an assessment of the Expo's possible impact, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said an event of this scale would inevitably lead to a massive increase in carbon emissions unless serious measures were taken.
Lo Sze Ping, who wrote the report, said the air quality in the city has already improved and investments such as expanding metro and train services to a total of 400 kilometres of lines will leave a lasting green legacy.
"What is interesting to see is how the Expo has helped improve the environment in the city over the past 10 years, and what it will do for the next 10 years," Lo said.
hkskyline February 4th, 2010, 08:54 AM UK sows seeds of its Expo exhibition
4 February 2010
Shanghai Daily
VISITORS will be invited to watch, touch and recognize more than 60,000 seeds of different plants as the core exhibition of the United Kingdom Pavilion at the World Expo 2010.
They will be surrounded by the seeds in a 20-meter-high hollow cube-like structure with the seeds embedded in the walls and ceilings.
A senior UK official yesterday unveiled the pavilion's exhibition plans, which will feature open-air performances, including works by William Shakespeare, and some star guests.
About 100 visitors can visit the cube at any one time. The seeds will be well-protected and can be planted after the Expo is over.
The seeds demonstrate the concept of sustainability, the diversity of nature and the potential of life, said Carma Elliot, the UK deputy commissioner general. She announced the theme of the pavilion was "Building on the past, shaping our future."
The 6,000-square-meter pavilion is composed of the cube-like structure, known as the "Seed Cathedral" and the area around being designed to look like wrapping paper, signifying a gift of friendship to China.
Large "green maps" of the UK's capital cities - London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast will highlight their extensive green areas.
The "paper" area is as large as a standard football pitch and will be a public area for performances and for children to play football, just like a city park, Elliot said.
The square will have performances every day including ballet, drama, orchestra and dance. Some UK football stars may be on hand to teach soccer skills to children, she said.
The pavilion will also feature London's plans for the 2012 Olympics.

Britain sows the seeds of change at world fair
See>
http://blogs.reuters.com/uknews/2010/02/15/britain-sows-seeds-of-change-at-world-trade-fair/
How do you persuade 70 million Chinese that Britain is a modern, dynamic economy rather than a fog-bound heritage park filled with characters from a Dickens novel?
That’s the challenge that faced the design team behind the British pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010, the huge international trade show that opens in May.
Instead of building a glass box filled with tired images of red buses and Beefeaters, they have come up with a striking, futuristic design which they hope will challenge stereotypes about life in Britain.
Note Britain has the biggest seed/plant Bank/depost in the world.

Shanghai Daily
THE World Expo 2010 organizer has recruited nearly 1,000 volunteers who can speak some of the world's less-spoken foreign languages - the largest such number in World Expo history, a senior Expo official said yesterday.
Most of them are postgraduate language majors at universities in Shanghai, selected out of the limited number of non-English foreign language professionals, said Xia Kejia, director of the Volunteer Department of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
They'll speak languages other than Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Arabic.
Non-English foreign language professionals are in great demand, as the bureau expects most foreign visitors to come from Japan, South Korea and other Asian countries near China.
Some foreign volunteers have also been recruited, mostly from Japan and Spain, who served visitors at the 2005 Aichi Expo and 2008 Zaragoza Expo.
The organizer also recruited some South Koreans and Italians who will work at the 2012 Yeosu Expo and 2015 Milan Expo, the next two Expos after Shanghai.
Other foreign recruits are Shanghai inhabitants who can speak Chinese.
The 5.28-square-kilometer Expo site will have 2,535 volunteers serving visitors simultaneously on normal days. The number will be doubled during peak periods, including weekends and holidays, he said.
A total of 77,000 people from both home and abroad have been recruited as Expo volunteers, including 10 percent as reserve in case too many visitors enter the site.
All the volunteers will enter the Expo site in mid-April to take part in the five test operations to minimize things going wrong during the 184-day event.
The organizer yesterday unveiled the volunteers' uniform -mainly white and green with a logo resembling the Chinese character for "heart" on the T-shirt.
Sleeves and trouser legs can be removed in hot weather.

hkskyline March 5th, 2010, 05:02 AM Hong Kong Pavilion : Early opening puts Shanghai Expo pavilion in pole
The Standard

http://www.hkexpo2010.gov.hk/images/main.jpg
Hong Kong's pavilion at the Shanghai Expo will open on April 20 to give the public a glimpse of what is has to offer in the run-up to the main event which starts on May 1.
Once the six-month long Expo opens, up to 7,000 people a day are expected to visit the three-story creation.
"Of course, we cannot expect 7,000 people every day from May to October, especially when the temperature can reach 40 degrees Celsius in August," said Patrick Chan Chi-king, director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai.
He said the pavilion can handle about 700 visitors an hour.
The government has already applied to keep it in place after the expo ends on October 31.
"We hope we can keep it, but it is for the organizer to decide," Chan said. "If we must demolish it, we hope to transport the exhibits back to Hong Kong."
The pavilion project will cost the government HK$346 million.
Chan would not say what exhibits will be in the pavilion, but he did say there will be a main theme each month, such as "green living in Hong Kong," "One country, Two Systems," "Stories Behind Banknotes," and "Comics and Animation."
Cantopop icon Jacky Cheung Hok-yau will serve as the SAR's ambassador.
Chan said the government is still talking with the distributor of the movie, Echoes of the Rainbow, which won the Crystal Bear award at the 2010 Berlin Film Festival last month, so that it can be shown.
Project director Henry Choi Wan-kit, of the Architectural Services Department, said the pavilion's design symbolizes a city where people can move and think freely without constraints or barriers.
The three levels highlight different aspects of the city's connectivity and creativity.
"At night, dynamic facade lighting will change the look of the pavilion to illustrate constantly changing Hong Kong," Choi said.

HELICOPTERS will be used during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo to transport patients from the Expo zone to designated hospitals, officials from Shanghai Health Bureau said yesterday.
The Shanghai Medical Emergency Center is cooperating with the Shanghai Police Aviation Force, which has one medical helicopter and another copter that will be used as backup.
Xu Jianguang, director of Shanghai Health Bureau, said Shanghai has made detailed preparations for medical needs.
"Prevention of major public health events and infectious disease outbreak, drinking water safety inside the Expo zone, food safety and effective medical service are our top tasks for a smooth Expo," Xu said.
Local health authorities will set up five first-aid stations and have designated seven nearby hospitals to receive patients transported from the zone.
Ruijin Hospital and Huashan Hospital, two of the seven designated care centers, have helicopter pads and fast channels from the pad to the operating room.
First aid at medical stations will be free, but the follow-up treatment at hospitals will be a paid service.
The charging mechanism is under discussion.

hkskyline March 23rd, 2010, 07:34 PM Chinese vice-premier urges Shanghai Expo construction be stepped up
23 March 2010
BEIJING, Mar. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan on Tuesday urged construction of exhibition pavilions and facilities to be sped up in a "race against time," with little more than a month left till the opening of the Shanghai World Expo.
"With the joint efforts from various aspects, the preparation work for the Shanghai Expo has been going smoothly as a whole. However, there are still challenges," said Wang, also chief commissioner with the event's organizing committee, here Tuesday.
Wang said currently the most urgent task is the construction of facilities in the venues.
"We should improve service and facilities with stress on details to satisfy Shanghai residents and both domestic and overseas visitors," said Wang.
In addition, Wang urged mapping out a plan to cope with peak attendance periods and bad weather.
Offering the largest-ever exhibiting area of 5.28 sq. km in the World Expo history, a record 70 million visitors from home and abroad are expected to attend the Expo from May 1 to Oct. 31.

conc.man March 29th, 2010, 09:53 PM Do some search snapdragon. It's a typical urban transformation to revive old decayed industrial waterfront area, in the name of expo.
The pavilions invested by foreign countries are temporary, some of them will be shipped back to their home countries after expo, and also there is few great pavilions, UK pavilion I wish, will be permanet keeping.
Except self-build temporary pavilions, most photos in this thread are, lots of permanet buildings are museum, art gallery, cultural center or exhibition hall after expo. Some of them, like arena and theme pavilion, are newly built; other ones, like shipyard and powerplant buildings, are historical preservation and renovation projects.

Jim856796 April 20th, 2010, 08:52 AM There are five buildings of the Expo site which will remain standing after the Expo to form a new urban district of Shanghai in the long run. One of those buildings is the Expo Axis.

sickasick April 20th, 2010, 08:14 PM It seems that Shanghai Expo still has some problems to solve based on the trial run on Tuesday. With only 10 days left for the official opening, things must be done to make sure the Expo will run smoothly.
One big problem is that queues are way too long and the waiting process is extremely exhausting. I guess this is partially due to that many pavilions are still in preparation. It is understandable that if you go to a fair like this, you have to wait in lines. But if it has to take me about an hour or even more time to get any food, that would probably scare me off. After all, only 200k people were reported to enter the Expo park.
It is a challenge for organizers to take care of such a huge crowd. I learnt that expo staff and volunteers are working very hard--many are working from 7am to 11pm. On the weekend about 500k people are expected, let's hope that the experience will be improved then.
2010 Expo in shanghai is very worthy of you to go to see.
