The Fullerton Hotel Singapore

http://www.singapore.travelmall.com/images/38828.jpg

The Fullerton Building, originally built in 1928. Begins a new Chapter in its 72-years history, with its restoration into Singapore's Landmark Hotel, The Fullerton Singapore. The historic significance and unique architecture make the building eminently suited for a grand hotel. Designed by the Shanghai-based firm of Keys & Dowdeswell, this historic landmark enjoys a strategic location at the mouth of the bustling Singapore River, making it the focal point of commercial activities during its heyday.
The Fullerton Singapore's prime location in the heart of the Civic District, is in tandem with its rich history. Lying at the forefront of Raffles Place, Singapore's financial and business district, it enjoys close proximity to the cultural centres of Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, The Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, as well as art museums in the vicinity.

In the olden days when people travelled by sea, the Fullerton Building was a familiar landmark for visitors arriving into Singapore.

Fullerton Hotel - built 1928 - post office initially, converted to hotel in late 2000 approx. location by the river.

Raffles Hotel - built 1887. The singapore sling cocktail was first created here.

both hotels are located about 10 min walk apart.

Yeah......but I think it still cost quite a bit to stay there. I went to the website and saw the rooms.....it was luxurious! But of course Raffles which is a boutique hotel is much more expensive ;)

Raffles City > I wish I had! Anyway the last time I went down to Singapore is in Feb 2001......I would love to be there again but I had no one to host me there.....hehehe.......I would have to booked well in advance for RCI resorts then ;)

BTW do they allow any photography in the hotel lobby? :?

Oh cool! Didnt know that but I noticed a small room on the top. I think its been converted into a bar. What I read was that in olden days, the Fullerton was a landmark for travellers arriving into Clifford Pier by boat.

Well, at least I knew about it, thanks to the opening of the restaurant called "The Lighthouse" when the Fullerton opened as as a hotel, and there were press reports about it. Too bad the restaurant just shut its doors! :D

oooh just came across this pretty thread! i love the philippe starck faucets in the toilet! they were used in gattaca too :D

and i read somewhere that umm i had a class party in town? wrong.... the only thing about fullerton hotel that can be associated with my school would probably be ummm my music teacher's wedding.. she had the string ensemble (she was in charge of it) perform at her wedding.. i probably mentioned it at some time because it seems so grand to have your wedding at fullerton and a string ensemble playin (for free) and WE WEREN'T INVITED! all the other teachers who got married invited us... :(

it's illegal to take pictures of toilet? why?

Cliff

The interior is preserved?See the giant interior columns? Are they still there?

Btw ,how did they managed to convert it into a hotel?

Was the interior completely demolished and rebuilt?Anyone knows?

RafflesCity
May 12th, 2004, 10:35 PM
The interior has been thoroughly redone but I am sure crucial support systems like the massive columns were untouched.

There was a documentary on its conversion to a hotel (including Goodwood Park and Duxton Hotels) on TV a few weeks back.

huaiwei
May 12th, 2004, 11:32 PM
You can write an entire book to document how they turned this into a hotel. I remember ST had a full page coloured diagram explaining the processes involved and all that. Really cool!

The 'holes' or 'courtyards'.
In the aerial pic you can see 4 'courtyards' or something at the GPO.

RafflesCity
May 13th, 2004, 05:45 PM
They covered the courtyards with glass to air condition the interior.

redstone
May 13th, 2004, 06:06 PM
So all 4 courtyards are still around?

RafflesCity
May 13th, 2004, 06:15 PM
I am not sure..they might have made some changes as the interior is now a massive atrium....

Yes and yes. The one you posted is what I'd call the side entrance though. An underpass connects the hotel to One Fullerton.

redstone
May 13th, 2004, 06:36 PM
So that's where it is?

And that's the original main entrance?

RafflesCity
May 13th, 2004, 06:40 PM
I dont know if it was the original main entrance..probably not. I think there was a car park on the other side and there were some surrounding walls that were knocked down to make it more approachable.

May 17th, 2004, 07:23 AM

Fullerton Square wins Fiabci award again

18 Nov 04

TYCOON Ng Teng Fong's Far East Organization/SinoLand has again won an international real estate award for its Fullerton Square project comprising The Fullerton Singapore hotel, One Fullerton and the underground link connecting the two.

http://business-times.asia1.com.sg/mnt/media/image/launched/2004-11-18/fullerton-214246.jpg
The Fullerton Hotel: It is the only development in the world to win the prestigious award four times

Far East/SinoLand is also the world's only property entity to win the Oscars of the property world, the Fiabci Prix d'Excellence, four times. Fiabci is the French acronym for International Real Estate Federation.

Its latest triumph comes from winning the US-based Urban Land Institute Award (ULI) for Excellence 2004, with Singapore being the only Asian country to feature a winning project.

The ULI Awards for Excellence programme is widely regarded as the land use industry's most prestigious recognition programme worldwide. Winning projects, representing the highest standards of achievement in the development industry, contribute to a live-work-play environment and are designed to complement and enhance the greater community.

'It reaffirms The Fullerton's achievements in its pursuit of world-class real estate development excellence,' said Chia Boon Pin, chief operating officer of Far East's retail & lifestyle concepts business group and corporate affairs director.

One Fullerton nightspot sees third revamp, promising to take clubbing to new heights
By Zul Othman, TODAY

SINGAPORE: When new player Onyx Group announced that it had taken over the premises previously occupied by Centro in February this year, industry watchers were predicting good things for the troubled One Fullerton area.

After all, Centro - owned by Centro Concepts and comprising the Centro main room, waterfront bar Embargo and sister club Lola - had made the area a thriving destination for local clubbers.
Industry watchers lauded Centro for giving clubbing institution Zouk a run for its money. Besides bringing in the usual barrage of big-name international DJs, Centro was the first club to take advantage of the 24-hour partying licence in November 2002.

In August last year, Centro drew its shutters amid a flurry of accusations - the landlords claimed Centro had defaulted on the rent for several months while the latter insisted that the lease was too expensive.

Besides its rental woes, Centro's run-in with the Manpower Ministry over unpaid staff wages also made headlines early last year.

Following that, One Fullerton - despite the few tourists who frequent the restaurants at the venue and the Merlion next door - became a virtual ghost town once the sun goes down.

Although ex-Centro boss Michel Lu had declared to this paper that the big clubs were dead, The Onyx Group took over the venue in February after several months of negotiations, promising a club similar to its predecessor.

But five months after the takeover, Onyx has been through a face-lift.

Now called One, the club's new owners at One Group told Today that the overhaul represented an effort to escape the ghost of Centro and was meant to reposition the club as one of the premiere clubbing venues in Singapore.

As the club's director David Wong explained: "Onyx was cast in the shadow of the previous club and the new management wanted to create a three-in-one entertainment hub that allows casual chilling out at Lash, a sophisticated and one-of-a-kind club where the party stretches to the break of dawn at Makino and an ultra-modern disco decked out with the best light and sound at One."

According to Wong, no expense has been spared to set One apart from its previous incarnations.

Already, over $2 million has been spent to give the club's decor a complete overhaul.

Wong added that the new management team has decided to ditch the trance music championed by Onyx in favour of commercial music designed to appeal to a younger crowd.

Lash - located where Embargo used to be - will be turned into a live acoustic venue.

Despite these rather populist moves, the management insisted they were still targeting older, discerning clubbers through their exclusive, after-hours club Makino.

With a revolving cast of DJs (some of whom had worked at Lola) and furnished with white sofas and an impressive lighting system, the club opens from midnight until sunrise and has already attracted an enthusiastic following.

In fact, many are hailing Makino as the new place to be seen.
.
"Makino is a clubbing destination set to take Singapore's night-life culture into a new dimension of entertainment, unconstrained by the usual closing-time restriction of 3am," explained the 44-year-old Wong.

Aside from re-jigging the formula, how does One intend to survive in a climate known for its fickleness?

With the exception of the 27,000 sq ft Zouk (which re-opens on Oct 21 after a month-long renovation), the clubbing scene has seen a shift from big clubs to smaller venues.

Two other big clubs that opened earlier this year - the 12,000 sq ft DXO at The Esplanade and the 20,000 sq ft Momo at Central Mall - have experienced varying degrees of success.

In an exclusive story last August, Today revealed that Rouge at Peranakan Place had ditched its high-profile DJ nights in favour of live rock acts.

The reason? DJ nights don't bring in the revenue, said Rouge's director of operations Yung Ong.

Veteran nightlife mogul Dennis Foo felt that clubs need to be mindful of a number of factors when they set up shop.

Foo, who co-owns Devil's Bar at the Orchard Parade Hotel, said: "At the end of the day, strategic positioning is important and the quality of management decides the success of any club."

While Foo observed that the cost of space at One Fullerton is high, he also reckoned that factors such as "location, the availability of carparks and proximity to critical mass areas such as shopping malls" play a part in the achievements of any venue.

Indeed, another obstacle that One faces is One Fullerton's high leasing fee.

Sources estimate that the rent for the 20,000 sq ft location at One Fullerton was $210,000 per month, or $7,000 per day.

Is it feasible to operate at such an expensive location with very little traffic?

While the landlords of One Fullerton - Hong Kong's Sino Group - were unavailable for comment, there are signs that the new management have learned from the mistakes of the past.

For one thing, the move to scrap trance music in favour of commercial tunes at the main club is seen by many as a move aimed at appealing to a wider audience.

Still, Wong denied that business is slow. "We made changes to the venue to create a unique experience for clubbers. We have spared no effort in creating a different look for the club scene in Singapore and believe that we have broken the barriers of alternative clubbing."

And even as One faces competition from big players such as Zouk, Attica at Clarke Quay and DXO, Wong said his club would have something to offer everyone.

"We never thought of competing with any of the mentioned clubs," he explained. "Good competitors will invariably raise the standard of service, the music and the ambience. It can only be positive for the whole industry."

"However, industry players have to wise up and not play the age-old pricing game. Clubbers - like all consumers today - are wiser and have more experience. They know what they want and will go there. We believe that our unique setting at One Fullerton will give a dark-to-dawn experience not to be found at other clubs."

Some industry watchers said that the third time is the charm as far as One is concerned.

As Wayne Lee, associate editor of local clubbing magazine Juice observed: "I think a club has to keep trying until it gets the formula right. It doesn't mean that it has failed or anything.

"From what I've seen, I think this incarnation might be a hit. Makino is definitely a good idea - not too many places have the after-hours concept. It's also a nice place so it should do well."

Janus,

Hopefully you will see this in time before your trip. (I didn't note the date you posted).

Yes, you SHOULD stay at the Fullerton, without question.

As my name quite clearly suggests, this place ROCKS! I was fortunate enough to stay here a few months back, and it is without doubt one of the best hotels of the world. The rooms are good, the views (try a Quay Room if you can) are wonderful, the lobby is breathtaking, and the service and food is all-time.

Yes, I know the people in this forum are good at advertising the place, but it really doesn't need it. I am not Singaporean so can't be biased, and this place is an absloute joy. Don't miss the opportunity.

You want proof of how good it is?

Well, the fresh honey that you can personally scoop yourself from a slide of honeycomb (you know, like the wooden frames that come straight out of a bee-keepers hive) which is displayed on the breakfast buffet bar (Town Restaurant on the ground floor) did it for me. Pure luxury.

The lobby is unbelieveable too.

And the best bit is, it's really not that pretentious, and it's in the best spot for everything. MRT is just 100m walk away, and you're right on the river.

You'd be a fool not to stay.

Hopefully, if someone can tell me how to post images in time, I can show you the rooms, views, etc. I have plenty of snaps.

Watch this space!

In answer to RafflesCity: don't expect too much from the pics! I'm no expert photographer like hyacinthus (now she is a talent - I really envy great photographers) but I try. Composition and quality aren't great, but if you haven't yet seen pics of a Quay / Courtyard Room, these will give you an idea of what they're like. The rooms aren't over-the-top lavish, but I'd describe them as contemporary/traditional; minimal, tasteful, understated luxury. And we were given a magnificent view of the Durians.

And in answer to Pengui, I actually DETEST honey, but seeing the honeycomb in a frame showed just what lengths the Fullerton goes to in order to provide fresh food at it's best.

The taste of honey makes me want to puke (!!!!) but I'd be a moron if I didn't appreciate the sight of that sitting on the buffet. The spread for breakfasts is a marvel but that for me was the icing on the cake!

Oh, and for an example of good service (and eye for detail), at breakfast on just our second morning, the chef that cooks eggs whichever way you want them remembered exactly what ingredients my wife had asked for in her omlette the previous morning, recited them all and asked if she'd like the same again today! Pretty good, huh?!

And as if this alone isn't impressive enough, when we checked into the hotel at the start of the holiday - which was 2 weeks short of National Day - we asked were they busy and the guy at reception told us they were at 90% occupancy! So the chef must have some memory!

And just for fun...

I know it's not OF the Fullerton, but I took this shot after we'd done some travelling to Indonesia and returned to the hotel for our last day in Singapore before leaving for home the following morning. We were booked to have a Courtyard room this time but we were given a room on the outside of the building instead (not sure if that's classed as a Courtyard Room but we didn't complain) which faced onto the Maybank building. As you can see, this shot is of a chap at work in the bank, enjoying a cuppa and gassing to someone on the phone. I just thought it was amusing, but not sure you'll share the same view. Who knows, maybe someone here knows the guy, or IS the guy!

Thanks for the comments hyacinthus!

The shots are okay, not quite to your standard though!

(Smaller shots posted photographed on my wife's Fuji FinePix S5000 (4.1MGpx) but I've saved them at half size to avoid excessive load time, and the larger ones here were taken on a Kodak Easyshare CX6330 (3.1MGpx) but reduced to 100px/i again to avoid load time - I hate waiting ages for pics to load, so I'm sure other people are the same).

I'll try your suggestions with the different link and see how I go. (Ta)!

Yes thats quite an unusual perspective I daresay. That lush green is entirely manmade though...its entirely reclaimed from the sea, thus creating a bay.

^^ VERY nice, Babystan! :cheer:

But I still think the Maybank building is a totally unworthy neighbor to the Grand Old Fullerton.

Thanks! :)Unusual and fascinating shot of one of my all time Singapore favorites, babystan! :applause:

EDIT:

Also: GREAT THANKS also to Raffi for his photos above. :okay: However, I'm afraid they reinforce my dislike for the neighboring Maybank building. Couldn't those people at least rework the first 3-4 floors to create a more appealing, pedestrian friendly facade at ground level? I mean this is a popular riverfront ppromenade! :bash:

Thanks SEAFan

hmmm...actually I feel that the base of the Maybank Tower is quite simple, and all the attention would be focussed on the Fullerton.

but the siting of the two has been historically fixed as Maybank already owned a shorter building on that site which was redeveloped in 1999. Its a very small site!

This old pic shows the Fullerton & the previous Maybank building.

Thank you, Raffi! :) You're really sweet to dig out the old picture and to explain further to me why the Maybank Building looks the way it does. The old photo is beautiful! I love all the different shapes of the roofs. :okay:

I know I have ignored you and other apologists for the Maybank building in the past, always insisting that the Fullerton Hotel deserves a better neighbor. But I guess I'll have to finally face the fact that, like it or not, there it is, and there's nothing I can do about it. So I'll quit bitching! :D And please feel free to remind me if I do it again. ;)

hmmmmph

Nothing fascinates me more than strong vehement views expressed about buildings, especially buildings found in Singapore :D

So keep it up! Having an opinion is better than having no opinion :D

What a superb place ...

The Fullerton's situation at the edge of the river with a view of all that greenery really makes it extra special.

Thanks SEAFan...its really worth a stroll in that area, which used to be where the colonial govt offices were. It retains a very unique and genteel atmosphere today

The Fullerton has a commanding entrance at the entrance of the river, as can be made out in this old pic (yes, yet again)

Post letters at The Fullerton

By Huang Huifen | StraitsTimes.Com | Jul 8, 2010

You can post a letter at The Fullerton once again - 14 years after it ceased operations as the republic's General Post Office. No, the luxurious hotel has not reverted to its original purpose, but a colonial-style red pillar post box located outside the newly-launched Fullerton Heritage Gallery will function as a regular mailbox.

The 500kg mailbox, flown specially from Britain, is the centre piece of the permanent exhibition at the gallery showcasing photographs and artifacts which traces the history of the Fullerton building from a fort to post office and its present-day use as a hotel.

Launched on Thursday by guest of honour Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, the 800-sq m gallery located at the lobby of the hotel will also include the Foundation Stone which was erected outside the building in 1970 by Singapore's first president Yusof Ishak as a tribute to the early settlers. The stone was shifted to the National Archives in 2000 and has now returned to its original premises.

Philatelic items such as a 1906 picture-less postcard, a letter from Chicago which made its stop in Singapore enroute to Europe in 1935, and a weighing scale are also on display to celebrate the building's postal heritage.

The gallery is partially funded by the National Heritage Board's Heritage Industry Incentive Programme, which supports private players in developing heritage attractions.
