Architect: Rafael Viñoly Architects, PC

This new museum encompasses approximately 33,000 square meters of gallery space, library, public areas, maintenance, dining, storage and support areas. This building is one of only a few in the world designed using a canvas-like material. This project presented many engineering challenges, including the design of an air conditioning system that can maintain proper temperature and humidity to preserve sensitive artwork and manuscripts. The museum will has two levels. MEP spaces and service corridors will be located along the perimeter to allow for changes to specific galleries while maintaining the remaining galleries open to the public. An emergency generator will be provided to support art storage areas and selected galleries displaying artwork.

it would defeat the purpose though because it's currently designed to look like a sand dune.

A treasure house of art in a sand dune

An artist’s impression of the entrance of the Museum of Modern Arab Art.

Doha • Qatar has taken a major step toward becoming the cultural hub of the Middle East with Rafael Vinoly Architects being commissioned to design the Museum of Modern Arab Art.

The New York-based firm recently unveiled the design of the upcoming museum. Rafael Vinoly Architects, which has been in the sector since 1983, was one of the finalists in the World Trade Center design competition in 2006.

This has put an end to speculation in the art world about Qatar's project. The speculation started when the London-based The Art Newspaper revealed that Qatar had bought some expensive pieces of modern art recently.

When built, the museum, designed in the form of a sand dune, will be one of a few in the world constructed using a canvas-like material. The new museum will encompass approximately 355,000 square metres of space for several uses, like gallery space, a library, public areas, maintenance, dining, storage and support areas. The museum will have two levels. An emergency generator will be provided to support art storage areas and selected galleries displaying artwork. The building will be set into a landscape of sculpture gardens and outdoor terraces that take advantage of the favourable climate, and will also have provision for visitors’ parking.

The museum will emphasise a remarkable collection of contemporary art. It will house Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed Al Thani's collection of modern Arab art and important regional antiquities, comprising more than 10,000 pieces in all mediums.

This collection will form the initial basis of the museum's holdings and inform its future acquisitions programme. The project will help the public learn about Arab culture and promote art appreciation.

A special section will feature examples of Arabic calligraphy, the distinctive and exquisite art form which has influenced many contemporary Arab art forms. The exhibits will range from Quranic manuscripts of early Islamic centuries to modern calligraphy.

More than 700 pieces of antiques, sculptures, metalwork and ceramics will reveal the influence of ancient civilizations on contemporary Arab art, with some dating back 5,000 years. The collection will represent the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Arabia, Greater Syria, Egypt and other areas. Other sections will include sculptures, graphics, photography and applied arts.

The museum is scheduled to open within the next three years. When it does, the building will be the most expensive 'sand dune' in the world.

Designed by Rafael Viñoly (http://www.rvapc.com/), the Museum of Modern Arab Art is dedicated for Sheikh Hassan Bin Mohammed Al-Thani who has great collection ranging from articles, quranic manuscript, and abstract painting. Covering 33,000 sqm, the exterior of the museum blends into the landscape, and I think it looks great. The completion of the project is expected due in 2011.

The building is set into a landscape of sculpture gardens and outdoor terraces which take advantage of the favorable climate, and also has provision for visitor parking.
