I decided to start a thread on the world's largest shopping malls since there could be many shopping malls that have at least 2,000,000 sq ft of retail space. The largest shopping mall is the largely vacant South china Mall. There are two under-construction malls in Dubai that could surpass its size soon.

I heard theres a new one in Beijing too thats now the worlds second largest, the Golden Resources Mall.

rentable space

1. South China Mall, Dongguan 7.1 million sq. feet
2. SM Golden Resources Mall, Beijing 6 million sq. feet
3. Mall of Asia, Pasay City, Philippines 4.2 million sq. feet
4. Cevahir Istanbul, 3.8 million sq. feet
5. West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton, Canada 3.8 million sq. feet
6. SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City, Philippines, 3.6 million sq. feet
7. Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia 3.4 million sq. feet
8. Beijing Mall, 3.4 million sq. feet
9. Zhenjia Mall, Guangzhou, 3 million sq. feet
10. SM City North Esda, Quezon City, Philippines, 3 million sq. feet

Almost all these malls take advantage of the weather in places where its too hot/ too cold to shop normally (eg Canada, Southern China, Philippines).

Golden Resources Shopping Mall, or Jin Yuan is a shopping mall located near the Fourth Ring Road in Beijing, People's Republic of China.

In English, the mall has earned the nickname Great Mall of China, owing to its total area of 7.3 million square feet (680,000 square metres) over six floors. At 1.5 times the size of the Mall of America, Golden Resources Mall was the world's largest shopping mall from 2004 to 2005.[1][2]

The mall was completed on 20 October 2004 after 20 months of construction and opened four days later.

Although the developer of the mall initially estimated that the mall would have 50,000 shoppers a day, as of 2004 the actual number was far smaller, as few as 20 in an hour. One problem was that prices of most items sold were far beyond the purchasing ability of most ordinary Chinese. Another barrier was the inaccessibility of Golden Resources Shopping Mall to foreign consumers because of what Forbes magazine calls "a tough location outside the heart of the city."

In 2005, Golden Resources Shopping Mall became the world's second-largest mall when South China Mall in Dongguan was completed. It was still in second place as of late 2006.

Im kinda gald malls arent catching on that well in China. All that famous, vibrant traditional streetlife of the cities would be sucked away. I can understand their popularity in hot and humid countries, as well as freezing ones though.

The Dubai Mall

The Dubai Mall is a large mall being built in Dubai, United Arab Emirates by Emaar Properties. The mall is a part of "Downtown Dubai." Developers claim it will be the largest mall in the world when completed. It is scheduled to open on 30 October 2008.

It will cover a total area of 12.1 million ft², with 10 - 15 individual smaller malls built inside it, consisting of 9 million ft² of shopping retail space (comprising of a total of 1200 stores). Featured attractions include the world's largest gold souk with 220 retailers; the 850,000 sq ft (79,000 m²) Fashion Island, with 70 flagship stores dedicated to haute couture as well as the Middle East's first Galeries Lafayette department store; one of the world's largest aquariums; an Olympic-sized ice skating rink; Oasis Fountain Waterfall; WaterFront Atrium; a view of the (soon to be completed in late 2009) world's tallest building, Burj Dubai. Other attractions include the region's first SEGA indoor theme park covering 76,000 sq ft (7,100 m²); a ; KidZania, a 80,000 sq ft (7,400 m²) children's 'edu-tainment' centre; a 22-screen cineplex; and The Grove, an indoor-outdoor streetscape with fully retractable roof.

Malls are dying in the US. Not because of the very recent economic problems, they have been dying for the last 10 - 15 years here.

They are considered both passe and declasse ... only teenagers go to them. Fashionable shopping streets have made a big comeback, and also specialized districts such as fashion districts and home design districts. Many people hate the acres of parking and the distances to walk to get to one of the shops.

Malls were big here in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Finally we are becoming more like Europe ... London, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Rome - they don't need malls and don't want malls.

I agree.
Fashion streets and districts are definitely making a comeback.
I would say this 'fashion street' or 'district' feel is being replicated (or atleast an attempt to replicate the atmosphere) in these so-called 'town centers' that you see popping up all over the place.

Now the SM North Edsa (Philippines) has a Gross Area of only around 330,000 sq. m. but once relaunched in 2009 it will become the Largest Mall in South East Asia & 3rd Largest in the World. Mall of Arabia will be a "gargantuan" shopping mall to be built as part of the City of Arabia in the Dubailand theme park premises in Dubai. It was announced by the Ilyas and Mustafa Galadari Group and it will include leisure and entertainment facilities, a theatre stage, and feature an ancient Middle Eastern exterior. Its Phase 1 has a gross leasable area of 4,000,000 sq ft (370,000 m2); however, when all phases are completed, it will have a final gross leasable area of 10,000,000 sq ft (930,000 m2), surpassing the South China Mall in Dongguan, China as the world's largest shopping mall. It has two levels of retail and entertainment, rooftop hotels and numerous leisure facilities. There will be 10,400 covered car park spaces in its first phase. In August 2005 the Starbucks Coffee Co. of Seattle, Washington announced that the world's largest Starbucks cafe will be built in the centre court of the mall, symbolizing the Middle East's long association with coffee and the expanding business partnership between Starbucks and the growing Dubai marketplace.

That's all true, because we generally associate "malls" with the suburban kind.

But, big malls can (but rarely are) be very urban in nature as well. Look at the Toronto Eaton Centre (itself the largest mall in the world when built)...it is located right in the heart of downtown, on the street grid, with no surface parking, two subway stops right inside it. While 30 years old, it remains viable to this day with over 1 million visitors every week.

TEC is also just a part of PATH, which while is not a single owner/managed mall, is indeed one contiguous, connected indoor mall with 4 million square feet of retail space and growing. It also does not fit the usual "teenage hangout", as most of it services the hordes of workers in the office towers above it.

Shopping malls are called here in Brazil as Shopping Centers...or just "Shoppings"...
the biggest problems of building malls is the fact that your destroying the the luxuary stores of the streets, and the city becomes empty...this way of life ephasizes the private spaces not the public ones...turning the city more "closed", and inacessible...
but i agree that are some great points too, they can use the malls to creat development to degradeted areas too!

This has been posted before, but The Mall Of America's (MOA) expansion was approved by the city about two months ago, and will bring the size to nearly 10 million sq. feet (910,000 sq. meters).

The $1.8 billion Phase 2 will include a 4-level, 5.6 million square-foot expansion on 42 acres connected to the current MOA, and will also link to the existing IKEA. The developers estimate that the current 40 million visits per year will expand to 60 million when Phase 2 opens. (40 percent of those visitors come from a distance greater than 150 miles.)

All of the plans and diagrams can be found here on the City of Bloomington's website. (http://www.ci.bloomington.mn.us/cityhall/dept/commdev/planning/econdev/moa_ph2/moa_ph2.htm#plans)

The project is approved and designs are well underway by KKE Architects of Minneapolis. A 300,000 sq. ft. Bass Pro Shop, Kimpton Hotel and a 6,000-seat performing arts center are in the mix, along with 450+ new stores added to the current 520. Here are some earlier concept drawings:

Activities include the world's largest in-door climbing wall, a skate park designed by Tony Hawk, I-max theatres, a Wavehouse and much more.

Zonki'Zizwe mall, which will also be located in Johannesburg, is currently under construction and will be the largest at 200 000m2 when it is completed. Another mall in Durban, part of a huge development, should it be approved, will be even larger.

Some facts;
- +/- 80.000 - 100.000 m2 shopping space
- Space for cafe's and restaurants
- Space for fashion shows, art and other cultural things
- Hotel and more

It is still unkown if the shopping mall will be built. 70% of the people living in Tilburg wants it, but many people are afraid that the city center will lose shops.
Some people say there is no need to built such a big shopping mall in the southern part of NL, they say it should be built in the Randstad.
The Randstad is the western part of the Netherlands with cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht, The Hague, Rotterdam, Haarlem and many other big cities.
