DUBAI, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Qatar National Bank , the country's largest lender by market value, plans to build one of the world's tallest towers in the Qatari capital Doha to house its new headquarters, a magazine reported on Sunday.

The skyscraper, for which main contractors have been invited to express interest, would be taller than the 509-metre Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan, which is the world's tallest completed building, London-based weekly MEED reported in its latest issue.

The tower will have a total built-up area of 235,000 square metres, with five basement levels, MEED said without saying where it got the information.

Burj Dubai, being developed by Emaar Properties , will become the world's tallest building when it is completed in 2009.

per segment i count about 50 floors, esp. when u look at the video u see that 3 floors are separated with one of those "balconies"

so it could well be more than 500m.

Great tower. This reminds of the first design of Burj Dubai which was scrapped and later changed. (The proposed tower for Australia)

I just had a peak at some drawings, they have level 122, but the elevators stop at level 101

Go back a couple of pages, you will see that piling was completed. Since there is no news that it is on-hold, I would assume that it is now under foundation raft works. It is definitly u/c.

The coarseness is the answer of the innocent persons... Once again. I like this tower, I just want a photograph to make me sure it's under construction, what else ? It's the base of this site : updates ! Because so many people had said projects under construction and it was proved they were on hold and some of them cancelled...

typical floors are 4.8m and this building will have 102 levels.

It is the tallest building under construction which we do not yet have a drawing for. Now that we have seen a rendering of the building a drawing can be made for it.

The Al Qud tower in Qatar has recently been drawn and now appears on that page.

Qatar National Bank (QNB) is inviting bids from prequalified contractors to build what will be the tallest building in Qatar, and one of the largest skyscrapers in the world.

Firms have until 10 September to submit bids to build the bank's 101-storey, 510-metre tall headquarters building on the Doha corniche.

Firms prequalifying to bid include Lebanon's Qatari Arabian Construction Company (ACC); the Australian/UAE Al-Habtoor Leighton Group; a joint venture of the local Midmac Contracting Company and Belgium's Six Construct; Australia's Multiplex; and South Korea's Samsung Corporation (MEED 8:8:08).

The consultancy team includes Doha-based KEO International Consultants as the project manager and Australia's Peddle Thorp Architects.

Contractors originally expected the tender to be issued in September last year, but say it was delayed because of the global financial crisis. The subsequent fall in construction costs across the Gulf will lower the cost of the project.

"It was due out towards the end of last year, but I think QNB and all the other banks were more concerned about what was going on with the financial system then," one contractor considering bidding for the project tells MEED. "From the client's point of view, there are probably some cost benefits too. Prices have come down."

Developers in Abu Dhabi say that tender prices are now about 30 per cent lower than they were in the third quarter of last year, as material prices have fallen and contractors have cut their margins to secure work.

The project is the only major tower scheme to be tendered in Doha this year, as developers have put plans for a series of other high-rise buildings on hold.

However, unlike in nearby Dubai, where many projects have been cancelled because developers can no longer afford to build them, the schemes in Qatar are likely to go ahead.

Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company has delayed the 400-metre-tall tower it planned to build as part of its Doha Convention Centre development, partly so that it can benefit from further falls in prices.

The project's prequalifiers included Multiplex, Samsung and Japan's Taisei Corporation. The US' Murphy Jahn prepared the concept designs and US-based Turner Construction International is the project manager.

Abu Dhabi-based Al-Jaber Group has also delayed plans for a skyscraper on the corniche. It had planned to build a 100-floor tower, but has delayed the scheme while the design is reviewed to make sure it caters to the new market conditions. US-based SOM is the architect.

If the QNB project goes ahead, the 101-storey tower will be higher than the 509-metre Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan, which is currently the world's tallest completed building. The 818-metre tall Burj Dubai in the UAE will become the world's tallest building when it is opened in September 2009.

The development of towers in Qatar has been restricted in the past by limits on the height of developments close to Doha International airport's flight path.

However, these will be lifted when New Doha International airport opens in 2011.

It says 101 floors, I think the original project(61 floors) was a vision one since I can't think of any buildings that have 8 meter floors ;)

hmmm south Korean has been announcing buildings for longer than doha so i think that we might see this one get built with a delay, isnt the economy of qatar thriving?

In August 2010, bids of the 2 shortlisted companies for the construction contract were still under evaluation.

In Q4 2010, the construction contract is expected to be awarded (delayed from March 2010 to August 2010).

In 2013, the project is expected to be completed.

Not just yet. Apparantly they are still evaluating the offers from construction companies to choose the winning bid.

I think the Qataris are a bit lost with where they are going. Imex for example - recruited a load of experienced interdealer brokers from London to set up an hydrocarbon exchange - now they're sat around doing nothing.. it's little wonder building projects are lacking direction, energy city is linked with all these other projects.

Any updates on this? According to Wikipedia construction resumed a couple of months ago back in October.
