Sitting here this morning, it occurred to me that we could use a thread like this, since so often historical references or inferences come up in our discussions.

This one is for the kids...

I'm sure kids back then looked forward to back to school, if they went at all. Courtesy of the Burgert collection.

^^I'm somewhat looking forward to going to school as I'm starting college, but not looking forward to paying for it.

A sticky perhaps?

I'd give up the cars, the house and it all to go back to 2000 and be a college freshman all over again. Undergrad were the best years, always looked forward to going back to school in the fall. Fall was great particularly as you got a little older, sophomore, junior, senior years because you got to watch all the incoming freshmen girls, all done up and dressed to the hilt....that lasted for about 1/2 the semester and then it was sweats and tshirts from there on out.LOL But at any rate, back to the topic at hand.

USF in its formative early years.

I wonder which building is that?

And the Library building is so hideous. I hope something is done to replace it down the road.

I beleive that is what would become the Marshall Center. As far as the library I like it, probably partial to many an hour spent on the 6th floor studying and such.

My old firm has a score card from the golf course that used to be on Tierra Verde (now Oceanview Drive). Next time I'm in town I scan it. Not a photo but good for history'c sake.

I don't know if UF just launched this part of their site or what, but it is a great new resource from my map. Finally found a proper picture of the old, yet short-lived Cespedes Hall that use to lie on Albany and Main in West Tampa.

OK I found out what this structure is, thanks to a trip to the library today! It is the first Centro Asturiano Club building built in 1909 on Nebraska and 9th ave. Unfortunately it burned in 1912 and the current blond brick structure was built on Nebraska and Palm in 1914. Check out the history of their organization here (http://www.centroasturianotampa.org/museum.asp).

Failed developments and down economies are nothing new to Tampa. Here's a look of one that didn't make it...
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/akb1710/burgert/4001.jpg
Caption on burgert site says Water St., Tampa and Franklin... I assume this would have been the block between Washington and Whiting. What a hulking mass.

I posted these photos on the Publix thread and just realized, why not post them here.

From the Burgert Bros photo gallery. All photos were taken in the mid to late 1950s.

Publix on Gandy Blvd. Very odd since I thought they opened this location in 1987. Maybe it was just the current building that opened in 87?

Yeah, I noticed that too. Of course that "driveway" no longer exists. And that parking lot was likely considered to be HUMONGOUS for those times. I'm guessing that about 1/4 of thier parking space has since been taken up by establishments like Taco Bell, Walgreens, and the former Frank's Nursery.

Can't do that... It's not supported, but it also requires JavaScript and that's not allowed to be posted publicly because of security issues (it quickly becomes a free for all if the forum software doesn't escape JS correctly).

But no worries, clicking through is fine :).

I think we need to restart the other photo a day thread too. Its been dead for a while as well. Unfortunately for me, I haven't taken any new photos these past several months cause my brother borrowed my Kodak camera. My other camera is not as good in resolution. I just got my Kodak back but have been working a lot lately so maybe this evening I'll capture some photos of something.
