Sarikei
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sarikei is a town, and the capital of the Sarikei District (985 square kilometers) in Sarikei Division, Sarawak, east Malaysia. It is located on the Rajang River, near where the river empties into the South China Sea. The district population (year 2000 census) was 61,100. The population is culturally mixed, with mostly Iban, Melanau, Malay and Chinese predominating.

The economy of the town is primarily agricultural, and Sarikei is famed for its pineapples and its pepper. The center of town has many old Chinese shophouses from the 1930s. It is also a major transportation hub for traffic on both the Pan Borneo Highway and the Rajang river. Anybody traveling by road or express boat from Kuching to Sibu must pass through Sarikei.

The most distinctive feature of the bustling waterfront is a 3.6 m high pineapple statue.

The town itself consists of a main road, Repok Road which is bisected by another road leading to the new development in Kampung Seberang.

By Sulok Tawie Published: 2008/09/13

A TAIWANESE food-based and biotech company will invest more than RM2 billion at the Tanjung Manis Halal Park in Sarikei Division, Sarawak over the next three years.

This follows the signing of legal documents for the granting of licence to Sea Party Technology Co Ltd to occupy the world's largest halal park for the upstream and downstream halal food and manufacturing activities.

The Taiwan firm signed the agreement with Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corp (STIDC), Tanjung Manis Food and Industrial Park Sdn Bhd and Halal Industry Development Corp (HDC).

Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud witnessed the signing ceremony.

Sea Party Group was represented by its chief executive officer Dr Ray Ling Hsing Jui while STIDC by its acting deputy general manager Hashim Bojet. Also present were Tanjung Manis Food and Industrial Park Sdn Bhd director Mohammed Azwar Mahmud and HDC chairman Tan Sri Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Abdul Taib said the investment will speed up the development of the halal park.

"We are looking at about RM20 billion investment by local and foreign companies at the halal park," he said, stressing that the state government was getting the full support from the Federal government.

Yes the sarawak way of development. Hope that SCORE will develop central sarawak even further to balance the general development of the land of the hornbills. I'd seen the highway connecting tanjung Manis to Sibu(from a flight to Sibu). It's completely connected of course by soil and rocks 1st. you can see lots machineries on the roads and all the rivers(around 7-9) of them starting to build bridges, some longer than the current longest bridge to cross a river(Lanang), more than 1km long. Good job Shin Yang! Hope that it will be completed ahead of schedule (so do Bakun)

Heavy traffic at the Nyelong ferry point as motorists wait to board the ferries.

By Michael Chiew

SARIKEI: The number of vehicles using the Nyelong ferry point is expected to increase in the next two days as Hari Raya Aidilfitri draws nearer.
Such increase is anticipated, especially during the “Balik Kampung” exodus that is beginning to pick up ever since last Friday.
It is normal for those working outstation to start taking leave at this time of the year.
The Nyelong ferry point is subjected to a heavy flow of traffic as more and more vehicles are using the point to reach the town of Sarikei.
The motorists have to queue up for their turn to cross the Nyelong River on board one of the two ferries operating at the point.

The existing two ferries are expected to cease operation by November 1.

By Michael Chiew

SARIKEI: The new Nyelong Bridge located at Jalan Melanti will open for use by the public from 7.00 pm on October 26, according to Datuk David Teng Lung Chii, Assistant Minister of Food Industries, as he chaired a preparatory meeting to discuss details on various programmes scheduled for the grand occasion. He said works and finishing touches on the RM22 million bridge project were entering the final stages now.
Also present at the meeting were Sarikei Member of Parliament, Ding Kuong Hiing, Sarikei Devision Resident, Michael Dawi Allie, and his deputy, Felicia Tan Ya Hua, and heads of local government departments and statutory bodies.
The bridge, Teng added, will provide a direct transport link for the residents of Sarikei and Bintangor, helping to speed up agricultural development in more remote interior and bring further economic progress to the areas concerned.
The soft opening event on October 26 would feature a simple walk-over ceremony and presentation of various cultural dances and songs, said Teng.
Heads of government departments, statutory bodies, community leaders as well as members of the public would be expected to witness the important event.
Meanwhile, Teng, who is also state assemblyman for Repok, thanked the government for the bridge project which will provide much convenience for people in the areas concerned.

SDC, hawkers clean up open air market
By Michael Chiew

SARIKEI: A gotong royong cleanliness campaign involving the Sarikei District Council (SDC) and hawker stall owners from the open air market was successfully held yesterday.
SDC Health Superintendent, Wong Sie Mee, when contacted at the same venue said the campaign was hosted to maintain the cleanliness at the respective stalls in the double-storey building.
He was pleased by the encouraging response from the stall owners.
Meanwhile, he reminded them to keep their stalls clean at all times and get rid of rubbish as soon as possible. He said their action should also extend to that of nearby drains and compounds so that a clean environment would attract more customers.
This, he added, would be particularly important for food outlets and other eateries. A high standard of hygiene must be maintained, he advised.
Sarikei Division Hawkers’ Association Chairman, Chuo Lang Kiong and others were also present at the event.

KUCHING: With the implementation of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Tanjung Manis has been earmarked for diverse economic activities ranging from timber downstream activities, deep sea fishing and shipbuilding.
The latest industry which will be launched by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on February 18 (Wednesday) will be the halal food processing hub, said the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) General Manager Datu Haji Len Talif Salleh.
“We have set aside about 1,000 hectares of industrial land for halal food production of livestock such as chicken, beef and fish,” Len told the Eastern Times recently.
He said Tanjung Manis was planned some 30 years ago to focus more on the timber industry development in the State.
“However, we are looking at Tanjung Manis entirely differently now because presently we are looking at shipbuilding and halal food hub. Of course, timber is still the major contributing factor there but it will be overtaken by other industries,” he said.
Len, who is also the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and Resource Management said, the actual rearing of the livestock could be carried somewhere else but that Tanjung Manis would be used as a hub to process halal food for Middle Eastern countries.

Tanjung Manis Halal Park is the first one-stop Halal Park in East Malaysia for upstream and downstream Halal Food and manufacturing activities. With 30,000 hectares of land available, Tanjung Manis Halal Park (TMHP) offers investors tremendous potential and opportunity to capture the increasing demand for halal products from both Muslim and non-Muslim markets globally. TMHP is strategically located on the west coast of Sarawak , the fastest growing and dynamic state in Malaysia. One of the advantages of the TMHP is its fast-track approval for Halal certification and endorsement. This will allow the smooth establishment of operations and reduce waiting period, ensuring a hassle-free procedure in dealing with approving agencies.

Gerugu Dam to the rescue of Sarikei folk
By Anthony Aga Monday, August 10th, 2009

Sarikei, Bintangor, Tanjung Manis, Belawai assured of a week’s supply from dam as rivers dry up

SARIKEI: Were it not for Gerugu Dam, taps in Sarikei and other surrounding areas depending on Bayong Water Treatment Plant would have already completely run dry by now.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, on being informed about this by the authorities concerned when he visited the dam and the water treatment plant yesterday, urged the people to use water sparingly.

He called on the people to bear with the authorities which had imposed water rationing in a move to sustain supply in the face of current dry spell.

Briefing Dr Chan on the current situation at the dam was an engineer from Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (PPES) who is also Gerugu Dam project manager, Major (r) Foo while Divisional Engineer Tiong King Wei and the officer in-charge of Public Works Department (JKR) Water Section, Ahmad Selihin, updated him on the water supply situation.

Dr Chan said the rationing of supply was not aimed at causing inconvenience to the people but rather to minimize the effect of rationing.

According to Dr Chan, the rationing exercise means that water supply has been slashed by half of the normal daily output of 30 million litres covering Sarikei, Bintangor, Tanjung Manis and Belawai.

He said the exercise meant lower water pressure which most people experienced since the past few days.

Dr Chan advised the people against using water for unnecessary purposes like washing cars or drains.

On the Gerugu Dam, Dr Chan said the current dry spell had brought out the best side of the dam which, despite its not fully-completed status, had already been able to support the water need of the people.

According to him, the dam now has enough water to feed the Bayong Water Treatment Plant for the next eight days.

“Sungai Gerugu and Sungai Sarikei, the main sources of raw water to feed the Bayong Water Treatment Plant, have dried up due to the prolonged dry spells.

“Fortunately, the Gerugu Dam project which was designed to increase the water supply capacity from 33 million litres per day (MLD) to 140 MLD, is there to save the day,” he reiterated.

Dr Chan also said that if dry weather persisted, cloud seeding would be carried out today if there is enough rain cloud to support the activity.

Among those accompanying Dr Chan were Sarikei MP Ding Kuong Hiing, councillors and community leaders.

Sarawak's food basket
http://www.easterntimes.com.my/images/P1010413.jpg
Dawi reading the stories on Betong in the Eastern Times.

SARIKEI will re-establish itself as the food basket of Sarawak as it has all the necessary ingredients to succeed, says the Resident Michael Dawi Alli.
He said last year alone, the agriculture sector here recorded some RM100 million in sale.
"I can foresee that Sarikei will play a very important role in future and it will contribute significantly in term of food production with the implementation of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE)," Dawi told 'ET in Travel' team at his office here yesterday.
He said among the main crops grown in the Division were pepper, rubber, fruits, padi and vegetables.
"Sarikei also produces livestock such as beef, mutton, pork, venison, and rabbit meat," he said.
Dawi, who hails from Saratok, said the people of Sarikei especially the Ibans in Pakan District had learned the art of vegetable farming from their Chinese counterparts.
"They have moved from traditional subsistence farming to commercial farming.
"Now, they even hold gotong-royong at night to hunt for snails that destroy their vegetable gardens. They have adapted to changes and have acquired new techniques in farming and marketing.
"These are the kind of techno-preneurs who will succeed whatever the challenges in the future. They are now able to sell their vegetables to places as far as Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri," he said.
He said efforts were now being put in place to encourage the local farmers to plant pineapples again, for after all, Sarikei was once famous for pineapples
"The soil at Bukit Huang is very unique and suitable for the planting of pineapples. Sarikei Pineapple has carved a name for itself, so we want to encourage the farmers to plant them again. This is important as it is the Division's icon, and we celebrate 'Pesta Nanas' every year," he said.
He pointed out that there had been plans to engage the private sector to cultivate pineapple on a commercial scale here to increase competitiveness and to move away from traditional way of cultivation.
Another two commercial commodities which Sarikei produces were Limau Madu (honey orange) and dragon fruit.
"Fruit production alone constitutes about RM12 million to the local economy last year," said Dawi.
He pointed out that aquaculture had been gaining momentum in Sarikei with catfish and tilapia being reared in ponds. The 2008 statistics showed that the sector recorded RM1.5 million in revenue.
On padi farming Dawi said there were two main padi planting areas here Budong Sian and Tekap Tulai.
"Both estates are doing well. Sarikei definitely has the potential and strength to become the food basket of Sarawak," he said.
Dawi said for Sarikei to succeed in agropolis and contribute towards the success of SCORE, the people must be willing participants and not just bystanders.
"The Government's effort now is to disseminate the right information to the people on the SCORE project. They must understand it otherwise they will be left out," he said.
Meanwhile, he advised swiftlet farmers to adhere to laws that govern the rearing of the birds.
"It is a lucrative business and I want to advise the ranchers to abide by the law," he added

P/S: Sarikei has a lot a tiger prawn farms too.

Raya rush in earnest in Sarikei
http://easterntimes.com.my/images/SAR-Market-Pix2.JPG
CROWDED Terminal one was crowded with people waiting to board the express boats to return home to their respective kampungs in the coastal areas.

Michael Chiew

SARIKEI: As usual during the eve of major festivals, the rush of 'balik kampung' is on in Sarawak and this scene can be seen in Sarikei recently. Those who have families are busy making the return trips for the coming Hari Raya Aidilfiltri celebration expected to be on Sunday (20 September).
At the express boat Terminal One, it can be noted that the whole place was crowded with people, mainly passengers who are taking river transportation as the means to travel back to their respective kampungs for the two-day Raya celebration. The main wharf was heavily crowded with people as early as 6am in the morning as other business activities continue to be carry on at the same place. At the wharf, a group of eight Civil Defense personnel were present at the terminal to maintain order and safety in the area. In addition, a second team of Civil Defense personnel was also stationed at the Express Bus terminal, Nyelong by-pass to conduct the same exercise in maintaining public order and security.
Of the numbers, the majority of the Muslim passengers were seen returning home by boarding the express boats in view of Friday (18 September) being declared a school holiday by Deputy Prime Minister cum Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
In addition, there was a marked increase of traffic with the major streets here jammed with vehicles resulting in lack of parking spaces in and around the town area.
The same increasing volume of in-coming vehicles is expected to continue for the next few days as more Muslim friends and family members working outstation are expected to reach for their respective home either by today.
A boat operator when queried at the wharf confirmed the plying of additional express services in order to meet the prevailing situation river transportation is the only means of transport to return home for some for the coming Hari Raya Aidilfiltri.

p/s: Starting from next year the terminals won't be as crowded as before with the completion of Sibu-Tj. Manis Highway.

Thanks for the comments ampelio. yes, i agree with you that most if not all sarawakian towns are located by the rivers or sea.

Furthermore, the best thing in Sarawak, like what you said is that there are developments in most of the towns and cities in Sarawak. Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Mukah are developing very well, followed by sarikei, limbang, betong, sri aman, serian and even lubok antu.

However, sarikei and sibu are old towns and they had severe brain-drains and the ongoing population increment in kuching, bintulu and miri are mainly due to migration of people from these smaller towns in search for jobs.

Hopefully SCORE can really develop Central Sarawak (Sibu, Sarikei, Mukah, Kapit etc.) to reduce brain-drains and develop the towns further.

Halal hub to help state penetrate world mart
By Anthony Aga

SARIKEI: Tanjung Manis Halal Hub provides an impetus for the state’s products to penetrate the international markets, Tanjung Manis Member of Parliament Datuk Norah Tun Abdul Rahman said.

That was made possible by the application of modern technology and practices which conformed to international standards, she said, admitting that presently many of the state’s products could not make into the world market due to the standard factor.

http://www.theborneopost.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/000050589.jpg
She singled out fish and other marine products as an example of the commodities which were yet to be accepted by the world market at large.

“The European markets do not accept our fish simply because our products do not meet the set standard. And having understood this, Tanjung Manis Halal Hub will accord special emphasis to this aspect,” she said.

“The foreign investors were well aware of the requirement. Hence, they were prepared to invest a huge amount in research and development (R&D) to ensure marketability of their products manufactured in the Tanjung Manis Halal Hub,” she stressed.
As there were Taiwanese entrepreneurs who had invested billions of ringgit in the industry, a university from the country, University Taiwan, would be working with the local universities (Unimas and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris) to carry out R&D, she said, adding in future, universities from other investing countries would also be involved.

The Taiwanese entrepre-neurs would invest in the fisheries sector which would also eye the highly potential world gelatin and collagen market.

According to her, demand for gelatin and collagen in the pharmaceutical market was worth US$500 billion.

“This is a big market which can promise a bright future for would be investors,” the MP said.

Norah also advised the locals to prepare themselves to grab the job opportunities created by the Tanjung Manis Halal Hub.

“The people can get in touch with Sarawak Timber Industries Development Corporation for update on the development or opportunities in the halal hub,” she added.

The local fishermen, she said, for instance can start their cage fish or prawn farms to supply fish scales and prawn shell to the gelatin and collagen factories.

Norah also said the earth breaking ceremony for the first phase of the halal hub is scheduled to be officiated by the Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on Oct 8.

It’s global market for Halal Park

Taib confident latest know-how employed by Taiwanese capable of producing what international market wants

TANJONG MANIS: Bio-technology will widen the market chain for the Tanjung Manis halal hub, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said. In fact, he said, the application of bio-technology not only would augur well for the sustainable growth of the halal industry but would also act as the catalyst for the development of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

“While the halal concept is aimed at tapping the huge Muslim market, bio-technology will further widen the market chain globally,” Taib said when officiating at the earth-breaking ceremony of Tanjung Manis Halal Park - Parcel 1 here yesterday.

Tanjung Manis Halal Park is undertaken by Taiwan’s Sea Party Group of Companies which has put in RM2 billion worth of investment worth for the development of Parcel 1(Phase 1) of the park.

Taib noted yesterday that the company would employ the latest technology in aquaculture and biotechnology to ensure high quality food production readily acceptable by the international communities.

Of this Taib said: “The bio-tech farmed fish, prawn and livestock are not only free from chemical contamination but that they will contain high level of EPA/DHA, meaning that they will fetch high price as well.”

According to Taib, because the state government recognises the fact that the application of bio-technology relies heavily on research and technology (R&D), it has offered 200 acres of land for free to the company to set up the company’s R&D centre in Tanjung Manis Halal Park.

He also said that the state government was appreciative of the company’s preference for the use of solar energy to fossil fuel.

Taib hoped that the company would realise its vision of turn Tanjung Manis into the country’s first ‘Solar City’.

“As a gesture of appreciation, the government has offered the company 200 acres of land for free to set up their R&D,” Taib reiterated.

He said in as far as saving the environment was concerned, on the government’s part, it had decided to locate all future shipbuilding activities in further places like Bruit or Tanjung Sirik.

On local participation, he advised that the people to accord special attention to education, saying that with basic education, skills training would not be hard to impart.

He said many job opportunities would soon emerge and not few of these would come from the halal hub.

“I hope the local people will be able to earn a monthly income of RM3000 to RM4000 by 2030, hence raise our capital income to RM250,000 from the current RM27,000,” he said.

Among those present at the function were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang, Minister of Resource Planning and Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Dato Sri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, president of Sea Party Technology Co Ltd Dr Ray Lin, Tanjung Manis MP Datuk Norah Tun Abdul Rahman, Assistant Minister of Tourism Hamden Ahmad and Sarawak Timber Industries Development Corporation general manager Datu Len Talif Salleh.

Taiwan firm to invest RM2b in Tanjung Manis
Published: 2009/10/08
http://tanjungmanishalalpark.com/

SARIKEI: Taiwan-based Sea Party International Co Ltd (SPI), together with its subsidiaries, will invest RM2 billion in the Tanjung Manis Halal Hub.

Under the first phase of its development, SPI will spend RM318 million for aquaculture activities such as tilapia breeding, chlorella cultivation and production of halal collagen and gelatin.

The second phase involves production of gelatin from tilapia scales, bones and skin, organic prawn farming and vendor development programme.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Taib Mahmud today performed the earth-breaking ceremony for the group's RM30 million research and development centre at Tanjung Manis, about 30 km from here.

SPI president, Dr Ray Lin, said the ceremony "will be the starting point to make the halal hub known throughout the world as the producer and distributor of halal food."

He said SPI has the support of the farming and fishing industries in Taiwan.

"We also have the help from the professors of the National Taiwan Ocean University and the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology," he said at the earth-breaking ceremony.

Lin said the group's proposed projects would provide jobs and business opportunities for the locals.

"They will be given the assistance and training in fish and prawn farming so that they will be capable of producing good quality halal products.

"Our vendor programmes will help them breed fish and prawn using biotechnology," he said.

He said the group would be eco-friendly and would maximise productivity with minimum disturbance to the environment.

Lin said the group's three units -- Sea Party Industry Sdn Bhd, Sea Party Technology Sdn Bhd and Sea Party Biotech Industry Sdn Bhd -- would focus on feed milling, producing biotech chicken and eggs and downstream processing respectively.

"Sea Party Biotech will play a bigger role than the other subsidiaries under phase one of the development since it is responsible for most of the downstream processed products.

"It will process tilapia wastes such as bones, skin and scales into collagen and gelatin in the forms of hard and soft capsules," he said.

Sea Party Technology R&D Sdn Bhd would focuss on transforming the Tanjung Manis Halal Hub into the world centre for quality halal food products, he said.

Lin was confident with the support and incentives given by both the state and federal governments, Taiwanese technologies could be localised in order to upgrade and enhance Malaysia''s agriculture and aquaculture sectors.

Consortium To Develop Country's Birdnest Industry

By Edward Subeng

SIBU, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- A consortium comprising businessmen in the local edible birdnest industry has been initiated to further develop the industry and strengthen its position in the world market especially China.

The protem deputy president of the newly formed Sarawak Birdnest Supplier's Association (SBNSA), Jesse Tang Yu Hang, said the consortium known as the Chun Yan Fang will launch a membership drive nationwide this month.

Tang said its present members now were from Sarawak as well as from Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor, Pahang and Penang and that they were looking forward for members from Perak and Kedah.

He said an investment of RM2.5 billion had been injected for the consortium to carry out the groundwork including setting up headquarters and carrying out promotions in China.

It is not easy for individual Malaysian businessmen to carry out promotions and sales of birdnest in China as the competition there is very strong, Tang said.

"Our consortium will focus on developing world class quality coming from Malaysia and not to compete on the price or quantity.

"We need to pool our resources together. We cannot afford to fight among ourseles or others as we only produce 10 per cent of the world market while Indonesia is the world's leading producer," he told a press conference here today.

A kilogramme of processed birdnest currently could cost up to RM10,000 in the market.

Tang said that by joining the consortium, members will also get to know the latest breeding culture, post harvest processing techniques for greater value and have access to more markets besides having their rights and interests protected.

He said in the current scenario where Sarawak prohibited the setting up of birdnest houses in cities and towns for health reasons, those interested could invest in Peninsular Malaysia where the laws were different.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is very supportive of the industry as he is aware of its very high potential as another top revenue earner for the country, Tang said.

On the recent development in the industry, he said: "Our parliament recently endorsed for the industry to come under the purview of the Agriculture Ministry. The Federal Veterinary Department will act as the lead agency to develop a blueprint on rules and regulations and guidelines and research and development to take it to greater heights.

"We are waiting for a '1 Malaysia 1 Birdnest Industry' policy to be tabled soon," he said.

Investment in the local industry is now worth over RM10 billion, mainly in infrastructure development while export value per year is around RM1 billion, Tang said.

"We expect the figure to grow especially from China where consuming birdnest is already a culture and which now accounts for 80 per cent of the world's demand.

"With a growing affluent population, we envisage the demand to increase."

On the consortium's plans, he said it would set up more selling outlets and franchises in major Chinese provinces and cities.

"We have planned for 40 of which 10 are already confirmed. Besides the birdnest business, we hope to promote Malaysia to more Chinese tourists too," he said.

The consortium also has plans to tackle the markets of Taiwan, Hong Kong and other Asian countries.

Meanwhile, Tang said the Sarawak Birdnest Supplier's Association which had about 1,000 members would be the third such association approved in the state.

It is expected to be officially launched here on November 15 where the consortium would also be promoted towards getting more members from Sarikei, which is the state's leading producer of birdnest, as well as from Kuching, Miri and Bintulu.

Sarawak currently produces about three tonnes of birdnest every month but has the capacity to generate about RM1 billion worth in the near future, Tang said.

"Sarawak is basically very big, still pristine and free from many heavy industries.

"There are plenty for the birds to eat. When more people join in the industry they will indirectly come to care for the environment," he said, adding that when the environment is threatened, the birds would be affected.

This in turn will affect the industry, he said.

On the state law which only allows the construction of birdnest houses in outskirt areas, he said there seemed to be some confusion about the bird species.

A veterinarian Dr.Koh Ung Leong, who was also present at the press conference, said only the house swiflets or "Aerodromas Fuciphagus" and the "Aerodromas Maximus" or cave swiflets produce the edible nest.

"The ones that cause the nuisance in towns and cities with their droppings and sheer numbers are the barn swallows, house swallows and the Starlings.

"Infact if we are to allow the building of birdnest houses in such settings, the species will compete with the three types for insects," he said.

He claimed that the number of the "nuisance" birds had greatly decreased in Sarikei town where there were more birdnest houses compared with other areas in the state.

Those wishing to know more about the association and the consortium can contact Dr.Koh at 012-... and Andy Tiang at 012-8....

Plus, Sarikei area has also been taken a lot by Mukah Division, leaving the coastal area to be so tiny, almost landlocked. U can try to wikipedia Kuching Division - there got the almost accurate version of the divisions in Sarawak.

Health dept doing rounds to check on conditions of foodstuff in shops

September 3, 2010, Friday

SARIKEI: The Divisional Health department yesterday carried out a general operation to check the presence of goods not conforming to health standard in the local grocers.

SAFE FOR CONSUMPTION: Dr Hasrina (left) and her team checking the condition of canned food on the shelves of a supermarket.

The operation, which was conducted simultaneously in town, involved five teams of enforcement staff from the Divisional Health office.

Divisional Health officer Dr Hasrina Hassan, who led one of the teams, said it was normal to carry out such operation during festive season.

“We check all kinds of food including canned food on their expiry dates and if they are rusty or badly dented,” she said.

All food found unfit for consumption were taken off the shelves and confiscated, she said, explaining that such an action was to ensure consumers did not buy contaminated or expired foodstuff, which was hazardous to health.

The operation was carried out in accordance with the provisions under Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985, she added.

Foreign Youths Enthralled With Iban Longhouse Community, Lifestyle

SARIKEI, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- A sojourn at an Iban longhouse in Pakan near here has done wonders for a group of youths comprising 12 Japanese and a Taiwanese.

The two-week stay at the Longhouse Rh.Chabo in Mugo Lengain has given them a valuable insight and a better understanding of the Iban community's way of life.

The 13 foreigners are members of Nice (Never-ending International workCamps Exchange), a non-governmental organisation formed 20 years ago in Shinjuku city in Tokyo, Japan.

University students Kana Saegusa and Sachibo Tsuchihashi and office worker Keiko Atsuta, in their early 20s, said they enjoyed their brief stay with their foster families.

Kana was given the Iban name of 'Gata' while Sachibo was named 'Pudai'.

"I came here during my summer vocation. I really enjoyed my stay and I am very fascinated with the Iban culture.

"The food is totally different and 'nyamai' (meaning delicious in Iban), especially the fish, chicken and other meat cooked in bamboo. I hope to come back again," said Kana.

She also had the opportunity to meet Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Joseph Salang when he visited a nearby longhouse, Rh. Salang.

Keiko, from Japan's Ibaraki Prefecture, said Nice was all about promoting global friendship, understanding and solidarity and cultural exchanges in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mongolia, the Philippines and South Africa, among others.

According to retired policeman William Entri, 62, who is a Nice co-ordinator at Rh. Chabo, volunteers came twice a year and would usually stay for two weeks at his longhouse.

"They come to teach us on how to care for the environment, and give tips on agriculture, health promotion and discuss cultural exchanges.

"They can only communicate in English, which can be a problem as most of those staying in the longhouse now are elderly folks with little or no formal education.

"But already, some of us can speak basic Japanese words now when we invite our foster children to eat, drink, bathe, dance or sleep," he said, adding that at the end of their stay, the volunteers would orgainse a farewell gathering where they would introduce Japanese cuisine and dances to the longhouse folks.

William said next year, the volunteers would return in February, May and September.

Funds needed for new deepsea port and Tg Manis airport upgrade
http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2010/9/15/business/b_05hashim.jpg
KUCHING: Sarawak has sought some RM800mil in federal funding to build a new deepsea port and upgrade the airport in Tanjung Manis as priority projects to support the halal hub development in Mukah Division in the state’s central region.

Tanjung Manis Development Sdn Bhd executive director Hashim Bojet said designs for the two proposed projects had been completed and submission for funds had been made under the 10th Malaysia Plan.

“The proposed RM300mil new deepsea port will be sited near to the Rejang River mouth. The upgrading of the existing airport is expected to cost about RM500mil.

“We hope to get the funds soon to start the infrastructure work early next year. Our target is to complete the two projects by 2012 or 2013,’’ he told StarBiz yesterday.
Hashim Bojet

Hashim said the development of the halal hub was on track, with the necessary infrastructure already in place under Phase I, which covers 16,000ha.

“The entire halal hub development up to 2030 is expected to attract some RM25bil in investment,’’ he added.

Technical colleges, hotels and resorts as well as new housing projects have been planned for Tanjung Manis.

Tanjung Manis Development is a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-owned Sarawak Timber Industry Development Authority (STIDC). It is the project manager for the halal hub and other developments in Tanjung Manis, one of the five new growth nodes in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

Hashim, who is also STIDC deputy general manager, said a specialised new deepsea port was a must to support the halal hub development as raw materials and halal products have to be handled separately from other types of cargoes.

STIDC now manages the Rejang Port in Tanjung Manis while the Tanjung Manis deepsea fishing port is operated by the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM).

The upgraded Tanjung Manis Airport can accommodate Boeing aircraft and facilitate the speedy transport of halal products for overseas markets, according to Hashim.

MasWing now operates one daily flight between Kuching and Tanjung Manis on a 19-seater Twin Otter aircraft.

A railway project has been planned to link Tanjung Manis and the proposed Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu where energy-intensive industries will be located.

Hashim said Tanjung Manis would be accessible from Sibu when a proposed 88km-long road would be ready by March next year. The road will be connected by a bridge at Batang Serdeng, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Without the direct road link, travellers to Tanjung Manis now have now to use boats for a 30-minute ride from

Sarikei, the nearest town. The road journey from Sibu to Sarikei takes another 50 minutes.

“When the Sibu-Tanjung Manis Road is ready, it will bring in more investors to Tanjung Manis,’’ said Hashim.

Tanjung Manis, which is home to Malaysia’s largest integrated timber complex, had received some RM2bil in public and private sector investments, according to Hashim.

Well, Sarikei may not have the super huge police complex like the ones in Sri Aman and Lubok Antu to make it look 'developed'

But Sarikei's location is good (Thank God).

Healthcare wise, Sarikei's hospital is equipped with specialists now (at least O&G and Pediatrics for the time being) and if anyone is to be referred, Sibu Hosp is just 45mins away.

I really pity Sri Aman's location. The nearest specialist hospital is SGH and it is 3hrs away.

Education wise, Sarikei has impressive schools littered around.

Supermarket wise, Sarikei undoubtfully has the most as compared to other small towns.

Well, we shall see. If only the government will listen to Sarikei MP and build the long awaited road fr. Sarikei to Tanjung Manis (The future SCORE growth centre) which is only 15kms away, Sarikei's growth will spurt. Sibu-Tj. Manis 'highway' bypassed Sarikei and made sarikeians super angry with the government hence BN lost for the very first time in Repok constituency, and soon the parliamentary seat of Sarikei.

FYI, sarikei has a very active facebook group named Sarikeians with lots of information, photos and videos about it. Do pay a visit. You'll be surprised.

Nope. I mean, Sri Aman if you look around, shophouses are expanding rapidly, and they're going to build one block of 10-storey hotel there. Sri Aman also has more widespread development, not focused only on the town centre.

I admit that Sri Aman look 'developed' after the Lubok Antu police hq, but minus this complex, I think Sri Aman is developing at faster pace compared to Sarikei. Maybe Sarikeians don't feel like to develop too much since that they have nearer bigger town like Sibu and smaller town like Bintangor. Sri Aman only has Betong and much further Serian and Kuching. Yeah pity them. :( :(

Stick with BN for further growth, Chinese urged

UNITED WE STAND: Ding (second left), Teng (third right) lead members to chant SUPP’s battle cry ‘Sa’ati’.

SARIKEI: The Chinese community must look at the Barisan Nasional (BN) as a great platform to participate actively in the government for mutual benefits, said Sarikei MP Ding Kuong Hiing yesterday.

Towards that end, they must rally behind BN parties such as SUPP if they yearned to enjoy equal opportunities like all the other races.

“The Chinese need to participate actively in the country’s politics and, most important of all, be well represented in the government,” Ding said during a motivational talk organised by SUPP here.

Among the 200 party members present were former Repok assemblyman Datuk David Teng Lung Chi, SUPP Sarikei Youth chief councillor Teng Ung Woo, organising secretary Wong Siew Tung and SUPP Sarikei branch committee members.

Ding told those present that he was aware that the Chinese communities in other countries showed no interest in politics because they were basically undecided whether they would be staying in their country of residence permanently.

In the case of the Chinese in Malaysia, everyone had accepted it as their home.

“Hence, we have to participate actively in the country’s politics, like the way we do in the economic fields. Our (Chinese) welfare would be well taken care of only if we have good representation in the government.”

Ding pointed out that Chinese-based parties outside the BN coalition would not be able to help the community as they did not share similar aspirations and goals.

The DAP, for instance, would not be able to help the community as it refused to work with the BN.

“In any case, I personally believed that it is still a long way to go before the DAP and its allies in Pakatan Rakyat (PR) can realise their dream of wresting power from the BN.”
