Coral reefs twice size of Manila destroyed

MANILA, Philippines—The crime was described as “the rape of the ocean.”
Poachers decimated an entire “reef complex”—almost twice as big as Manila—off the coast of Cotabato province when they harvested more than 21,000 pieces of black coral and killed 161 endangered turtles and other marine life, officials said Tuesday.
One of the turtles killed was a male aged 80 to 100 years old.
Bureau of Customs officials intercepted the contraband two weeks ago and recovered 134 bundles, or 21,169 pieces, of “sea fan” black corals and 15 bundles, or 196 kilograms, of “sea whip” black corals.
“The Moro Gulf and the Sulu Sea off Cotabato are supposed to be unexplored reef areas but with this collection, we can see that they have also been disturbed,” said Ludivina Labe, a senior marine biologist of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
“It’s like a forest that has been cut down,” Labe said. “One reef complex was decimated.”
Labe spoke with reporters during the turnover of the seized black corals, dead sea turtles and 7,300 pieces of sea shells to officials of BFAR and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources at the port of Manila.

2 container vans
Customs Police Director Nestorio Gualberto said wildlife trader Exequiel Navarro, consignee of the contraband, appeared at his office on Tuesday and indicated that he was prepared to identify the financier of the project and the people who harvested the corals.
Gualberto said the contraband was concealed in two container vans and declared as rubber.
Only two or three colonies of black corals—each represented by a piece of black coral—are found in one hectare of sea bed, Labe explained.
With 21,169 black coral pieces recovered, this could mean that the area harvested could be as big as 7,000 hectares, or an area almost twice the size of the city of Manila.
“These web-like colonial organisms are not lush or bushy. They’re found on reef walls or reef slopes. One piece is equal to one colony,” Labe said.
“One piece of black coral is not just one organism. There are thousands of other organisms who live there,” she added.

P35-M contraband
Theresa Mundita Lim, director of the DENR-Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, said one of the turtles killed measured 40 inches and was aged “80 to 100 years old.”
“There were also small ones who were only juveniles or just 4 years old,” Lim said.
“This is saddening because we have reduced this illegal trade and now we catch something as big as this,” she added.
Environment officials said some of the contraband could be given to marine biology schools while the black coral, although already dead, could be returned later to the sea.
Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez said the seized goods had a market value of “at least P35 million.”
The World Wildlife Fund estimates that the “economic cost over a 25-year period of destroying one kilometer of coral reef is somewhere” between $137,000 and $1,200,000.
“It took 25 years or even more for these corals to grow like this. They grow only one centimeter a month,” Labe said.

Exotic jewelry
The Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora has banned the harvesting of black coral but the practice continues.
“(The illicit trade) is being fueled by the demand of the multibillion-dollar marine ornamental industry for exotic decorative species and the increasing popularity of coral-accented jewelry and fashion accessories,” Alvarez said.
“While the Bureau of Customs does not have the means to serve as a first line of defense against the so-called plunderers of the marine ecosystem, we are determined to play the role of a deterrent by making it unprofitable for illegal wildlife traders to move their prohibited cargoes through our air and sea ports,” he said.
“Nobody should profit from the rape of the ocean,” Alvarez added.
The Fisheries Code of 1998, which bans gathering and selling corals, punishes violators with imprisonment from six months to two years and a fine from P2,000 to P20,000.

Longest zip line coming up in North Cotabato

COTABATO CITY, May 28 (PNA) - The North Cotabato provincial government has allotted a P5.8-million budget for the setting up of a 1.2-kilometer zip line deemed to be the longest in Southeast Asia once completed this year.

The project, which would straddle the high terrains of Kidapawan City and the nearby Makilala and Magpet towns, will have the range elevation of 360 to 920 meters above sea level.

North Cotabato Governor Lala Mendoza said that they would also erect lounges for campers and horseback riding trips at the ground where the zip line would traverse for added tourist attraction.

Mendoza said she expects the upcoming tourist attraction would rake in millions of revenues for the province.

The province also boasts of its Pisan cave in Kabacan, water tubing in Alamada and hot spring in Lake Agco in Kidapawan City as other tourist spots. (PNA)

Was until there was an order from the national government that most regional offices be moved to Marbel for easier access. Going to Cotabato is quite daunting, especially to the rest of SOCCSKSARGEN. Security-wise and accessibility-wise.

One thing's unique though, Cotabato City's local government is under Soccsksargen (Region 12), yet it is the regional capital of ARMM, but independent from Maguindanao Province and not part of ARMM.

really? wooo...so dapat lang pala na ilipat sa Koronadal City ang regional center ng Region 12...pinag aagawan pala ang Cotabato City...hamakin mo, the city is under Region 12 but its the Regional Capital of ARMM but not part of ARMM :nuts::nuts::nuts::nuts: sumakit ang ulo ko ha...something really needs to be ironed out...kung kaya binabaha eh...

Constructed in late 2000s, the new capitol of Sultan Kudarat has also neo-classical and Islamic motifs merged into one. It sits right at the donated lot by Don Garcia of KENRAM African Palm Oil Plantation.'

The construction was during the time when Cotabato City is constructing the People's Palace and Maguindanao was also finishing its Capitol at Sharrif Aguak. In case of SK and Maguindanao, alam mo na kung saan ang teritoryo ng mga Mangundadatu at ng mga Ampatuan.

Our whole clan transferred here in Davao City dahil sa hidwaan na yan. 1996 pa kami umalis ng Cotabato, particularly from Parang, Maguindanao.

A HEALTH LANDMARK TO RISE IN SARANGANI

The province of Sarangani is proud of many things: its convivial and industrious people, its progressive agro-industrial economy, its many scenic areas, and, certainly, its world-famous son, Congressman Manny Pacquiao.

Come August 1, 2011, the province of Sarangani and its people will have one more thing to be proud of. On that day, ground will be broken for the new Sarangani Medical Center. Currently, there is no existing tertiary level hospital in the province of the SOCCSARGEN region, and the local government has had to arrange and pay for the required medical care of its constituents in several private and public hospitals in General Santos City. The new 200-bed tertiary facility is slated not only to be the first such hospital in the province, but also be the premier medical center for the entire SOCSARGEN region.

The conception of and eventual construction and operation of the new hospital is the result of unparalleled initiative and cooperation at all levels of government. Thus, the hospital project is fully endorsed and supported both by the Local Chief Executive, Gov. Miguel Dominguez, as well as the province’s Congressman, Rep. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao. The establishment and running of the hospital will be made possible through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements – well in-keeping with a policy cornerstone of President Aquino. As such, the Sarangani Medical Center is not only a pioneering effort in the local government field but is slated to become a showcase of national development efforts.

Envisioned as a turn-key project, the state-of-the-art hospital is expected to remain highly accessible and, by relying on private sector management acumen, also provide appropriate care efficiently to all patients-in-need. The better health services that will be brought about with the operation of the new hospital are further anticipated to contribute to improvements in the health situation in the province and region. In particular, better medical management can be provided for sick children, complicated obstetric cases, and other patients with dire illnesses – thereby contributing to the DOH ‘s and the country’s commitment to addressing key U.N. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The hospital project is being undertaken under the auspices of the DBP’s Credit for Better Health Care Program. The bringing together of the concerned government and private parties, in particular, is the culmination of a series of extensive consultations made possible by the program. It is hoped that the Sarangani Medical Center will be the first of many PPP engagements that will effectively address the urgent deficiencies of the country’s health sector.

The establishment and running of the 200-bed tertiary facility will be made possible through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements and is being undertaken under the auspices of the DBP’s Credit for Better Health Care Program. Another endorsement deal for Pacquiao is to create jobs in Philippines

“Boxing world just doesn’t seem the same without Manny Pacquiao in it,” exclaimed Big Steve during our morning java at Starbucks on Western Avenue in Glendale:” What is Pacman doing these days?”

While his trusted promoter Bob Arum has just finalized a lucrative deal with HBO to televise and distribute Pacquiao Marquez rubber match on November 12th in Las Vegas and final preparations are being made for a World wide promotional tour for the upcoming bout, Congressman Manny Pacquiao is at home in Philippines working to help his people. Last week Pacquaio has signed yet another promotional deal which aims to create thousands of jobs and cut unemployment in Philippines.

Last week Internet Media Direct, a global marketing company has signed an endorsement deal with Manny Pacquiao, a world famous boxer, a Philippine congressman, and a national hero for his pugilistic conquests and philanthropic endeavors. This endorsement agreement includes use of name and image, official role as a company spokesperson, personal appearances, media clips and co-branding initiatives as well as activities on behalf of Internet media Direct.

Pacquiao wanted to be more involved in the company. “It’s not about money, it’s not about endorsements,” stated Robert Klayman, CEO of Internet Media Direct:” It is about creating thousands of jobs in Philippines.”

Internet media Direct, LLC intends to open several telemarketing call centers in Philippines to generate jobs for local residents. As agreed with congressman Pacquiao they will also set up call centers in Sarangani Province for the constituents of Pacman. Over-all plan is to set up 20,000 seats, generating 50,000 jobs within next five years.

“I just want to make people happy,” said Pacquaio. Pound for pound king of boxing/political leader does it in and out of the ring.

Pero kidding aside, what I like about Kidapawan is the cool weather. Ug ang native manok bbq diha sa dalan every night! My friend always brought me to that small bbq store when I happen to visit Kid. The sauce and the manok is really tasty with free usok from the vehicles plying around and basa inig ulan.

The city hall also looks nice now after it has been renovated. Kuyaw din ang ilang terminal ha. Compared to Marbel ambot lang, waay pa gid iya tarong na terminal ang Marbel. Pweeh!!!:nuts::nuts::nuts: Ang mga public transport vehicles sa Marbel murag FOR SALE lang kay naglaray sa dalan. Way klaro!:lol::lol::lol:

The city government bought a 5 hectare lot for terminal and other developments. i do hope construction will start very soon. Budget is said to be 50M. Sana naman gandahan nila but if the area is far from the highway, murag kulangon man ang budget kay road construction palang for 1 km is more than 10M na, plus the expenses on fencing, drainage, basi ang mabilin 10M nalang. ano kaya chura ng terminal nato? :nuts::nuts::nuts::nuts:

Although the ORC of Region 12 was situated in that compound, the Office of the Governor of ARMM was also built inside the ORC. Maraming Nalilito dito actually. Our regional office before was at the right back portion of this building. And for information lang po, walang Regional Office ang ARMM. nakikishare lang po sila sa regional offices of region 12 and 9. office of the Governor of ARMM is not the same as Regional Office. :)

“MERON bang ganito sa Davao?" asked Miguel Dominguez, governor of Sarangani Bay, when I bumped into him at the party venue of his region's most-awaited annual celebration.

The number must have multiplied ten-folds since the Sarangani Bay Festival was first conceived, and amazingly, the hundreds (if not thousands) of revelers in attendance on the evenings of the festival managed to fit in the party venue.

I must admit, there was an impressive turnout of guests from the neighboring regions who came to take part in the day events on land and sea -- beach dance marathon, Sarangani swim challenge, bancarera, coastal cleanup and the artificial reef deployment, beach volleyball and football, skim boarding clinic, and most importantly, the sunset gatherings when barbecue skewers took the place of the oars and beer was the beverage of choice. Based on the crowd alone, the SarBay Fest was a success. Congratulations are in order.

For two nights, the San Miguel Beer-invited bands rocked the Gumasa Bay, the second with more intensity that the first, the beachfront was lit by the swirling torches of the fire dancers, and the sky by the fireworks. The beach party lasted until the light of day flashed on the East.

No Miguel, there is no beach party in Davao can come close to the Sarangani Bay Festival. This is uniquely Gumasa's charm that will lure tourists to its annual event. In Davao, the celebrations happen on the streets, radiating from the city center to the coastline, celebrations that are unique to the Davao region.

But I'm glad we're neighbors and we share the same thrust in promoting Mindanao to the rest of our countrymen, and to the rest of the world.

Looking forward to next year's SarBay Fest!

3rd geothermal plant in Mt. Apo opposed
KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines - Various non-government organizations and residents here and in 17 towns of North Cotabato are opposing the planned construction of a third geothermal plant in Mt. Apo.

The groups opposing the project drafted a manifesto Thursday stating the project will only benefit the private operator of the facility and the industries owned by multi-national outfits.

Residents here and in surrounding North Cotabato towns have been complaining of the reluctance of the Energy Development Corp., which operates the two existing geothermal plants at the foot of Mt. Apo here, and the National Power Corp. to allocate to local power consumers at least 25 percent of the facilities' output.

The Department of Energy has a rule obliging hydro-electric and geothermal plants to provide electricity to host cities and provinces.

The power utility serving Kidapawan City and the 17 towns of North Cotabato has been rationing electricity for more than three months now owing to lack of supply from the state-run hydro-electric plants in Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon.

Sectors opposing the planned setting up of another geothermal plant here staged a rally last week to express their opposition to the project.

They also endorsed a copy of their manifesto to the city council, whose presiding chair, Vice Mayor Joseph Evangelista, sued officials of the EDC, the Napocor and the DOE for failing to provide the local communities of the mandated power allocation.

The two geothermal plants were constructed by the Philippine National Oil Corp. about two decades ago.

Here's some Cotabato City downtown pics. My family started in Cotabato City some almost 50 years ago. Back then, according to my parents the city is the most cosmopolitan in Mindanao being the melting pot of migrants from Ilocos, Panay, Cebu, Bohol and Pampanga.

Long before Dadiangas (now General Santos) nor Marbel came to prominence, Cotabato City dominated the economy of the entire Rio Grande de Mindanao Valley which virtually runs the entire Cotabato cluster of provinces which now forms the provinces known today as - North and South Cotabato, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, and Saranggani

Kaugnay nito, nagsagawa ng inisyal na pagsusuri kamakailan ang Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) sa naturang paliparan upang malaman kung ano ang pagkakagastahan ng inilaang halaga.

Base sa naganap na pagsisiyasat, ang pondo ay gagamitin sa pagpapahaba ng runway mula 1.2 hanggang 2.5 kms.

Ayon naman sa mga DOTC engineers, dagdag na P150 milyon pa ang kinakailangan upang makapagpatayo ng control tower, fire station at perimeter fence.

Nabatid na naatasan ng pamahalaang nasyonal si North Cotabato 1st District Cong. Jesus Sacdalan na pangunahan ang konstruksyon ng paliparan na siya namang sisimulan sa ikatlong quarter ng taon.

Inihayag naman ni Mlang Mayor Joselito Piñol na malaki ang maitutulong ng nabanggit na pondo sa matagal nang hindi natapos na pasilidad.

Matatandaang noon pang 2009 sinimulang itayo ang airport ngunit hindi ito natapos dahil kapos sa badyet.

Samantala, umaasa naman ang mga mamamayan sa nasabing bayan maging sa mga karatig na lalawigan na matapos na ang rural airport na siyang magsisilbing loading point ng mga pasahero at mga produktong makatutulong sa pag-unlad ng ekonomiya. (DED/SJD-PIA12,RBeñez-DXVL)

A law reapportioning the province of Cotabato into 3 legislative districts has formally been approved by President Benigno Aquino III.

Under Republic Act 10177, signed by Aquino on Friday, September 14, the municipalities of Pigkawayan, Pikit, Alamada, Libungan, Midsayap, and Aleosan would make up the 1st legislative district.

The 2nd legislative district would be composed of Kidapawan City and the municipalities of Makilala, Roxas, Arakan, Antipas, and Magpet.

The 3rd legislative district would be composed of the towns of Carmen, Kabacan, Matalam, Banilisan, Mlang, and Tulunan.

KORONADAL CITY,South Cotabato, Nov. 19 (PIA) -- The city government of Cotabato is calling for the support and cooperation of its residents as it advances its campaign against criminality.

The City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) made this appeal following reports of increased number of crime incidents from January to October this year.

In a recently conducted meeting of the CPOC Executive Committee members, City Police Director Danny Reyes said there were 218 cases recorded for the period of which 83 are shooting incidents.

Reyes emphasized that while the policemen are now doubling their efforts in securing the safety of the public, it also needs the support of the citizenry.

“We really need the support from our citizens because my men cannot afford to roam around all the time as we are lacking personnel. Besides, we all know that peace is not just the concern of the police but of everybody,” Reyes added.

Cotabato City has only 273 policemen who are not enough to secure the total population of the city.

Aside from the policemen, barangay officials in the city as well as their watchmen are being tapped to ensure peace and order in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, City Mayor Japal Guiani expressed his full support to the city police in strengthening the peace and order drive.

The official stated that the safety and welfare of the residents is one of the top priorities of the city government.

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Nov. 19 (PIA) -- Tourism officers from different towns in North Cotabato participated in a two-day Provincial Tourism Strategic Planning Workshop held at AJ Hi-Time Hotel in Kidapawan City last November 15-16.

The said activity aims to make a comprehensive action plan to boost up tourism in the province.

Butch Ledesma Ferrer, president of South Cotabato Cultural and Arts Foundation Inc. who was resource speaker of the workshop said North Cotabato has a very big potential in the tourism industry.

“They need to develop a comprehensive action plan to intensify its tourism campaign and identify and develop potential tourist destinations,” Ferrer added.

Among the plans suggested during the workshop is to create an ensemble of local performing arts groups, visual artists, musicians from North Cotabato to promote tourism and municipal tourism officer designates were encouraged to make a comprehensive tourism plans for their towns.

Meanwhile, North Cotabato Provincial Tourism Focal Person Ralph Ryan Rafael said that Municipal Tourism Officers also need to develop their skills through training for them to be able to perk up tourism in the whole province.

Activities in the workshop included tourism branding, mapping, profiling and reporting.

LGU, church in N. Cotabato team up to promote good governance, progress

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Nov. 16 (PIA) -- Local government units and churches in Midsayap, North Cotabato agree to work together for good governance and community development.

Last week, Mayor Manuel Rabara led at least 250 municipal and barangay officials, leaders of different churches and other sectors in the adoption and launching of Ugnayan ng Barangay at Simbahan (UBAS) project.

Also present during the activity were representatives of civil society organizations and people’s organizations as well as officials of national line agencies.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)- 12 said that UBAS project is a partnership of the DILG with the Catholic church and the League of Barangay to push for good governance, peace and progress at the barangay, the smallest political unit in the country.

The collaboration recognizes that political territories of barangays coincide with the parishes of the church, which provides an opportunity for both parties to work together for the efficient delivery of services and the attainment of integral development of residents.

It is also seen as a vehicle to address several concerns such as low participation of village officials in planning and administration and non-transparency of local budgeting.

Specific collaborations that have been implemented with UBAS project are clean up drives, values formation, anti-drug campaigns, tree planting activities and livelihood development.

The launching on November 6 at the rooftop of the municipal hall was highlighted by a discussion of UBAS project including its rationale, objective and organization.

Other topics focused on ethics of politics, zeal of good governance and bridging government and church.

Ensuing open forum clarified several concerns including fund allocation, project implementation, roles of parties in the collaboration, among others.

The convergence was capped by a signing of memorandum of agreement by the representatives of barangay LGUs and churches as well as other sectors involved in the project.

Tacurong Taekwondo Team is overall champion in regional tourney

TACURONG CITY, Sultan Kudarat, Nov. 16 (PIA) -- Tacurong Taekwondo Team bagged the overall championship trophy in the Kalimudan Festival Regional Inter-School Taekwondo Championships held on November 10 at the Capitol Gym of Sultan Kudarat.

The team amassed 35 medals, 17 of which are gold, 11 silvers, and 7 bronzes.

The medal tally was an improvement to the previous 30 medals that the team won when they participated in another regional tournament held in Glan, Sarangani last month.

The gold medalists were: Renzel Anating (VMC City College-Elementary), Alexi Bañas (Tacurong Pilot Elementary School – TPES), Jeriel Clarito (Notre Dame Siena College of Tacurong), Jasmine Angela Forro (Notre Dame of Tacurong College-NDTC), Kim Sheena Iwag (ND Siena), Kenji Charles Lapuz (TPES), Krishna Paula Magbanua (Jean Piaget LC), Ivan Malicudio (Ma. Montilla Elementary School), Florence Anne Mogan (ND Siena), and Kean Samuel Momay (Methodist Learning Center).

The following taekwondo jins completed the gold medal haul for the team: Andrea Camille Origenes (Jean Piaget Learning Center), Daisy Mae Ortile (TPES), Maxine Jayne Palpalatoc (TPES), Dan Francis Posadas (St. John Learning Center), Keansean Tasic (TPES), Mary Angeli Yap (NDTC), and Paulo Caluya (NDTC).

Eleven athletes competed for the gold medal games but lost and settled for silver medals. They were: Algruine Cabras (St. Benedict Learning Center), Carlos Diaz (St. John LC), Albeth Demapiles (Tacurong National High School-TNHS), John Daniel Espino (Methodist Learning School), Aaliyah Freno (TPES), Noel Chris Laforteza (TNHS), Zayton Mamasalido (TPES), Ginalyn Montemayor (ND Siena), Neejamah Jehan Ulangkaya (TPES), Genaiza Señorin (NDTC), and Reanold Navarro (NDTC).

Charles Naecolt Saavedra, the team’s coach also presented to Mayor Lina Montilla the overall championship trophy that they won in the tournament.

The players were very happy to receive praises with their recent accomplishment. They were also elated to shake hands with the mayor during the recognition ceremony.

Mary Angeli Yap, one of the gold medalists, said that her pains from the tough tournament seemed to suddenly vanish when she had shaken hands with the mayor.

City councilor and Taekwondo coordinator Rodrigo Jamorabon, during the recognition ceremony said that the team is grateful to the continued support of the city government to the taekwondo discipline.

He also thanked the 601st Brigade of Philippine Army, through Col. Edmundo Pangilinan and Capt. Alex Escalante, who provided transportation to the players who competed in the recent competition.

Cotabato City prepares for 14th Shariff Kabunsuan Festival

KORONADAL CITY, Nov. 16 (PIA) -- Cotabato City is all set for the celebration of the 14th Shariff Kabunsuan Festival which will start on December 15.

A number of new competitions will mark the event such the Search for Ginoong Shariff Kabunsuan and Festival Queen with Kuyog Street Dancing Competition and the Guinakit Fluvial Parade highlighting the occasion.

Aside from the annual celebration of the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival, the 2nd Cotabato City Crabfest will also be held simultaneously.

Several activities and competitions, such as crab exhibit, forum, crab race and cooking competition will be featured during the event.

The city government has tapped the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 12, the Department of Tourism in ARMM and Region 12, the Metro Cotabato Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Department of Education, City PNP, the MBLT-1 as partners of the events.

Cotabato province opens P35-M worth provincial hospital building

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Dec. 7 (PIA) -- The province of Cotabato has opened the newest and bigger building at the provincial hospital inside the provincial capitol in Amas, Kidapawan City on November 22.

Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza led the blessing of the public hospital complex’s latest addition, which was built at cost of P35 million.

Of this amount, P25 million was provided by the Department of Health with provincial government appropriating P10 million as counterpart to complete the project, the governor said.

Facilities in the new hospital building include a chapel, a 6-bed capacity dialysis room, 8-bed capacity Coronary Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit. It boasts of 38 semi-private rooms, 4 private rooms, 3 private isolation rooms.

It also has 4-bed capacity major operation room, 7-bed capacity recovery room, and 10 bed-capacity ortho, ob-gyne, medical, pedia and surgical wards.

The hospital has also an anesthetic room, two conference rooms, three nurse stations as well as separate lounges for doctors, watchers and hospital staff. Family members of patients could also make use of a spacious waiting area.

Aside from the P25 million for the hospital expansion, DOH also recently allotted P24 million to the province the department’s Health Facilities Enhancement Program of(HFEP) DOH.

During the blessing ceremony, 104 mechanical beds were also distributed to rural health units of the towns of Aleosan, Pres. Roxas (Provincial Community Hospital), Banisilan, Carmen, Kabacan, Pikit, Tulunan, Mlang, Arakan, Midsayap, Pres. Roxas (RHU) and Magpet.

The distribution is under DOH’s 2011 HFEP assistance to Cotabato province.

Also under the department’s HFEP, four barangays, namely: Salama in Banisilan, Lampagang in Tulunan, Pontevedra in Antipas and Bato-bato in Pres. Roxas were appropriated P500,000 each for the construction of their respective Barangay Health Stations. (DEDoguiles-PIA 12)

Alsons, 2 co-ops forge agreement on bangus production

KORONADAL CITY (MindaNews/2 December))— Alsons Aquaculture Corp., based in Alabel, Sarangani, has forged an agreement with two cooperatives to increase the production of export quality bangus or milkfish

An agribusiness unit of the Alcantara Group, Alsons signed up with the KawasMariculture Producers’ Cooperative and Sarangani Seaweeds Producers’ Cooperative to culture the fish in sea cages.

Under the agreement,Alsons will buy all their harvests at a price determined by a pricing committee created for this project

This partnership would address local and international market demand for value-added products produced from 600-800 grams milkfish or known as XL Bangus, a report from the Provincial Information Office said.

With this partnership, Governor Miguel Rene Dominguez said it would be the first time in the country for Land Bank of the Philippines to grant the growers financing for the project without any collateral.

Bangus business is among the priority industries being developed and promoted in Region 12.

Last year, Region 12 or Soccsksargen Region produced 21,234 metric tons (MT) out of the country’s total production of 372,581 MT.

Engr. NenitaBarroso, Department of Trade and Industry provincial director, said the national bangus production “continues to increase at a slow pace but is now driven by production from marine pens and cages.”

Based on the Bureau Agricultural Statistics data from 2006 to June 2011, the South Cotabato-Sarangani-General Santos City area ranked six across all regions in the country in terms of bangus production, with Alsons as the leading company in Region 12 exporting frozen milkfish to the United States (US) and non-US markets. 36 villages in N. Cotabato receive vehicles from prov’l LGU

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Dec 13 (PIA) -- Thirty-six barangays in three municipalities of North Cotabato recently received vehicles from the provincial government.

The turn-over of multicabs to barangay councils in M’lang, Arakan, and Magpet completed the distribution of vehicles to deserving barangays in the 17 municipalities and one component city of the province.

According to a report from the Information and Development Communication Division (IDCD) of the office of Gov. Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza, vehicles were handed to 13 barangays in Magpet town on December 3 in a ceremony at the provincial capitol in Amas, Kidapawan City.

Beneficiaries were barangays Manobo, Imamaling, Manobisa, Don Panaca, Ilian, Bangkal, Amabel, Noa, Tagbac, Binay, Sallab, Kauswagan, and Owas.

Before this, 11 multicabs were distributed to villages in M’lang municipality on November 5; another set of 12 vehicles were turned over to barangay in Arakan on November 22.

Recipients in M’lang were Poblacion A, New Kalibo, Liboo, Luz Village, Sangat, Tawan-Tawan, New Rizal, New Lawaan, New Janiuay, Palma Perez, and Barangay New Barbaza.

In Arakan, the barangay given multicabs were Libertad, Datu Ladayon, Napalico, Tumanding, Sumalili, Sto. Niño, San Miguel, Datu Mantangkil, Kulaman Valley, Naje, Malibatuan, and Salasang.

These vehicles may be used by local councils primarily deliver health services and to respond to emergencies such as bringing patients to hospitals and rescuing victims of calamities and for other official purposes.

Barangay Manobo chairman Ronald Pelonio, who represented barangay captains in Magpet town said, “We deeply thank you for making us feel that the provincial government really cares for us by making us one of the beneficiaries of the Multicab sa Kabarangayan program.”

He added that Barangay Manobo is one of Magpet’s remotest barangays and the vehicle will be a big help as they respond to emergency situations in their barangays.

Governor Taliño-Mendoza has repeatedly emphasized that the provincial government does not hesitate to give incentives to the LGUs that perform well and support the programs of the provincial government.

Midsayap holds Christmas Chess tourney

The tournament will be divided into two categories which will be participated bu chess enthusiasts from 1st District of North Cotabato and neighboring towns.

Children age 14 below will compete in the Kiddies’ Category while players 15 years old and up belong to the non-master open category.

In line with this, head chess trainer Ronald Arcenas encouraged those who play chess, especially young teens to join the competition.

Arcenas also said that they want to teach to the participants the importance of chess tourneys to hone their skills regardless of the prizes at stake.

The said chess tournament is presented by Midsayap Chess Kings Hunter Kids Club.

PUREGOLD SETS EXPANSION IN MINDANAO;
ALLOCATES P3 BILLION

Puregold Price Club, Inc. expects its capital expenditures to amount to about P3 billion in 2013, same as its 2012 budget, as it focuses on expanding its presence in Mindanao.

In an interview, Puregold president Leonardo Dayao said they are initially targeting the opening of 25 new stores this year as the firm targets to have 200 stores by 2015.

However, he noted that they may have to revise the target since they are already beyond the 150 store mark as of the end of 2012. Growth came on the back of the opening of new Puregold stores as well as the acquisition of S&R Membership Shopping and Parco Supermarkets.

Puregold ended 2012 with 156 stores after rolling out 31 new stores last year, including 17 hypermarkets, 10 supermarkets and 4 extras. That store count also includes 19 Parco supermarkets, which will be converted into Puregold stores at the total cost of P200 million, as well as six S&R warehouses.

With last year’s expansion, Puregold grew its total net selling area by 42 percent to 305,000 square meters.

Dayao said their expansion this year will include the first warehouse store in Davao City and a Puregold store in Cagayan de Oro City.

He said S&R Davao, which costs a total of P1 billion for the land acquisition and construction cost, will open around April or May 2013 while the first Puregold in Cagayan de Oro will open in the third quarter of the year.

“We can put up several Puregold stores in Davao City,” said Dayao adding that it will be the same in Cagayan de Oro. He said the firm continues to look for properties in both cities that are suitable for the construction of new stores.

GOVERNMENT RELEASES P1 BILLION FOR AIRPORT PROJECTS

MANILA, Philippines - The Aquino administration has released close to P1 billion for various projects under the government’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to improve the operations of different airports.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) said that it has released P933.8 million to allow night landing operations in 14 airports across the country.

Budget and Management Secretary Florencio Abad said the upgrade of airports is part of the government’s response to greater tourist interest in local destinations.

“Because there’s greater tourist interest in our local destinations, our airports are busier than ever. We’re seeing a larger volume of human traffic and more flights weaving their way in and out of our runways. The night-rating of these 14 airports will enable them to accommodate additional flights in the evening, so that their operations are no longer limited to the daytime,” Abad said.

Abad said the funds have been released to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and are chargeable against the agency’s lump-sum appropriation for PPP Transport Infrastructure Projects under the 2012 budget.

Airports that will receive funding support are the Tuguegarao, San Jose (Mindoro), Busuanga, Naga, Legazpi, Roxas, Tagbilaran, Dumaguete, Dipolog, Pagadian, Ozamis, Cotabato, Butuan, and Surigao airports, Abad said.

“These airports will be equipped with facilities necessary for night landing operations, including airfield lighting systems, communications equipment, power supply systems, air disaster management systems, and other systems for managing air traffic services,” Abad said.

Furthermore, the DBM has approved the creation of 85 new positions under the Bureau of Quarantine to enable better surveillance and improved control measures for infectious diseases and other health concerns from arriving passengers.

SENATE PANEL OKAYS 2 MORE YEARS FOR BARANGAY AND SK OFFICIALS

A proposed measure seeking to extend the term of barangay and Sanguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from three years to five years has been approved on the committee level.

Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., chairman of the Senate committee on local government, said that Senate Bill 3296, or the “Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials’ Term of Office Act of 2012” covers the term of barangay and SK officials elected in the October 25, 2010 elections.

Thus, if approved, the scheduled elections of village and SK officials in October 2013 will be held on the last Monday of October 2015 instead.

Marcos, in his explanatory note, said his proposal to extend the term of village and SK officials is to give them longer period to pursue their programs of development without being interrupted by concerns for reelection.

Historically, he said, there had also been several postponements of barangay and SK elections because of lack of funds. According to him, having an election every five years will provide the government enough time to raise the needed funds.

The government is spending an estimated P3 billion every three years for the conduct of barangay and SK elections.

Marcos said his bill would save the government billions of pesos, which could be used to fund other aspects of national development.

I apologize for being 3 days late. Hi everyone, for those who do not know me, this is Tj_Brewed, your fellow Mindanaon. I'm one of the new mods overseeing posts and threads in the cities and regions of Mindanao. I understand that there were certain issues in the pasts or requests which were not provided attention asap. Hence moving forward, for immediate action towards certain requests or reports, I'm encouraging all forumers to always make use of our samahan thread for reporting of your concerns. Or you can also simply send a private message to any of the mods including me with the link/s of post/s in dispute or if u have any requests. Ofcourse, we will look into these reports and requests carefully and would practice impartiality/fair judgement towards them.

It's a brand new year - a fresh start and new opportunity to have and maintain healthy SSC discussions this 2013.

Hi everyone...i hope all are having an awesome Wednesday. Anyway, in relation to having a good time, as much as possible we would also want to extend that to our SSC world. If you havent noticed yet, below every thread is a tagging box where forumers can put key words or tags to their respective city threads so that it can be easily searched online. Unfortunately, some trolls had been taking advantage of it. It also became a place for inciting indirect cvc in other threads. So to avoid this from happening, we will be standardizing the tagging of threads. :okay:

This will be strongly implemented moving forward. Pls be advised.

As discussed with mods, we will be implementing our standardization on placing tag names on forums. The following rules will be implemented starting tomorrow, 24 January 2013 6:00AM (Manila time):

A thread is only allowed to have FIVE (5) maximum name tags.
Only generic names will apply such as places within the locale, events (if applicable), or people from the locale (politicians are discouraged).
No "claiming titles" such as: "The Best City," Progressive, Capital of..., what have yous--even if it has been recognized by politicians, academe, mainstream media and the society.
Failure to comply may lead to deleting of tags or sanctions, which may be light as reprimanding, or heavy as locking the thread.

As part of GMA Network's aggressive regional expansion efforts, the company launched its Northern Mindanao station in Cagayan de Oro on Wednesday.

GMA Northern Mindanao is expected to serve over 1,404,183 estimated television households.

The station will cover parts of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Bohol, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Compostela Valley, North and South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Zamboanga del Sur, and Maguindanao.

It will be airing the much anticipated local newscast "Testigo Northern Mindanao" on February 5 as part of GMA’s late afternoon Prime Block.

"Testigo" will be aired between fantaserye "Paroa" and the new afternoon soap, "Forever" starring Heart Evangelista, Geoff Eigenmann and Gloria Romero.

GMA Northern Mindanao is the third originating TV Station launched by GMA Network in just eight months.

May I just remind everyone of the following rules for signature:

2. Signatures

a) Signatures should not occupy more than 5 lines of text and should not use large font size. No text over vBulletin size 3 is allowed, even if your signature line uses only one line.
b) Signature lines should not have nationalistic, combative, racist or any other kind of commentary which may offend others.

To our fellow Mindanao forumers,

As discussed with fellow moderators, we will be merging the auxiliary threads (e.g. SHOP & DINE, TRAVEL and PHOTS, etc) with their respective main local threads. From hereon, we will be optimizing our resources with our local main threads which may vary from developments to lifestyle.

Also, we will be closing the regional forums and will be concentrating with the local city/provincial threads for developments.

This will be a system-wide implementation. It has already started in Luzon and Visayas forums.
