Kidapawan City is a 1st class city in the province of North Cotabato, Philippines per Department of Finance Order No. 20-2005. It is the capital city of North Cotabato. It is a favorite tourist destination in the late October to December and in the summer, where thousands of tourist climb the majestic Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 101,205 people in 20,393 households. Estimates indicate that as of 2005, the population has reached 120,210.

Kidapawan, the city hailed as “A Spring in the Highland”, comes from the words “tida” which means spring and “pawan” meaning highland. The city is found at the bottom of the majestic Mt. Apo, the country’s tallest mountain making it a great spot and first-rate tourist attraction. Kidapawan is situated at the southeastern section of Cotabato province, placed in the middle of three other major cities of Davao, Cotabato, and General Santos.

Its first settlers were predominantly Manobos. The influx of Christian settlers from Luzon and the Visayas has resulted in the evolution of the word Tidapawan to Kidapawan.

Strategically located at the foot of Mount Apo, the Philippines' tallest peak at 10,311 feet above sea level, Kidapawan City bustles with renewed energy as it opens its doors to the world. Mount Apo and its other scenic attractions make the province of Cotabato a potential world-class tourist destination.

Kidapawan City plays a pivotal role in the economic development of the province and its adjacent areas. It is the commercial and trading center of six adjoining municipalities. It also boasts of agricultural productivity that can provide a strong base for much-required industries.

History

Kidapawan City was legally created by virtue of Republic Act. No. 8500, signed by then President Fidel V. Ramos on February 12, 1998, making it the first component city of North Cotabato Province. The people overwhelming ratified the said Act on March 21, 1998 during a plebiscite conducted for the purpose.

Originally named a district of Pikit in 1942, In 1942 the Japanese Imperial forces entered in Kidapawan, In 1945 defenders of the Filipino soldiers and guerrillas taken in Kidapawan fought the battles attack by the Japanese Imperial forces beginning the World War 2, Kidapawan was later declared a separate municipality by virtue of Executive Order No. 82 issued by then President Manuel Roxas on August 18, 1947 – thereby becoming the fourth town of the then Empire Province of Cotabato, composed previously of the municipalities of Cotabato (now Cotabato City), Dulawan (later named Datu Piang) and Midsayap.

Created along with the city were the 12 original barangays, namely: Birada, Ginatilan, Indangan, Linangcob, Luvimin, Manongol, Marbel, Mateo, Meohao, Mua-an, Perez, and Sibawan. From the original land area of 273, 262 hectares, Kidapawan retained only 34,007.20 hectares when four municipalities were created from it namely: Magpet (June 22, 1963, R.A. 3721), Matalam (Dec. 29, 1961, E.O. 461), M’lang (Aug. 3, 1951, E.O. 462) and President Roxas (May 8, 1967, R.A. 4869).

Prior to its conversion to a municipality, five appointed District Mayors had served Kidapawan. The first was Datu Siawan Ingkal, tribal chieftain of the Manobos, who headed the Civilian Emergency Administration when World War II broke out. He was followed by Felimon Blanco, Ceferino Villanueva, Jacinto Paclibar, and Alfonso Angeles Sr., who became the first elected mayor of the municipality.

Kidapawan became the provincial capital of North Cotabato pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 341 dated 22 November 1973, with the provincial seat of government located in Amas. Later, Batas Pambansa No. 660 dated 19 December 1983 renamed the Province of North Cotabato just plain Cotabato. By the time it became the province’s capital, Kidapawan had already 40 barangays under its geopolitical jurisdiction.

Population

Based on the 2000 census, the city has a total population of 101,205 with an average household size of 4.93 members belonging to 20,393 households

Economy

Kidapawan City was classified as a 1st class city per Department of Finance Order No. 20-2005 . In 2006, it yielded an income of Php268.94 million, of which 73.8 percent constituted the IRA. Of its Php314.22 million total expenditures for the year, 25.9 percent were expended on economic services.

The City is considered as the province’s industrial hub. It plays a pivotal role in the economic development of the province and its adjacent areas. It is the commercial and trading hub of six neighboring municipalities. It lies at the heart of two large domestic markets: Davao City and Cotabato City.

Kidapawan marks its 11th foundation anniversary today (http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20090212147971.html)

By MALU CADELINA MANAR

KIDAPAWAN CITY – The city government here will recognize today, during its 11th foundation day celebration, those responsible for contributing to the upliftment of the local community, like the Japan-owned energy firm who built two geothermal power plants at Mount Apo, the country’s highest peak, and the indigenous people in particular.

As this developed, City Mayor Rodolfo Gantuangco will present a plaque of appreciation to the president of the Marubeni Energy Services Corporation (MESC) – the operation and maintenance company for the two geothermal plants in Mindanao located at Ilomavis village here.

Gantuangco said the company has helped the indigenous people in Ilomavis village through scholarship grants, livelihood projects, and educational assistance.

He said mostly Manobo and Bagobo natives inhabit the Ilomavis village, which is located at the foot of Mount Apo.

Ryukichi Kawaguchi, MESC president, is expected to be present at the awarding ceremony today during the culmination of the weeklong foundation day celebration of the city.

Sim Maravilla, in-charge of MESC’s corporate social responsibility department at Mount Apo, said that since they set foot and started their geothermal operations, one of their primary concerns is to uplift the deplorable condition of the lumads in the area.

"Most of the natives, the children, in particular, have not gone to schools. They also had very limited opportunity to earn," said Maravilla.

It was gathered that the MESC is set to turnover this year to the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) the operation and maintenance of the Mindanao 1 and 2 geothermal power plants, which were originally constructed under a 50-50 equity sharing arrangement with Oxbow Power Corporation of West Palm Beach, Florida.

The project, according to Maravilla, is under a 10-year energy conversion agreement, which will end in 2009.

Philippine Muslims rally for resuming peace talks in south (http://http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=441448&publicationSubCategoryId=200)
Updated February 18, 2009 02:50 PM

COTABATO, Philippines (Xinhua) -- Around 10,000 Muslims in southern Philippines on Wednesday staged simultaneous protest, urging the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the country's largest rebel group, to resume their stalled peace talks to end decades old rebellion in the troubled Mindanao region.

Muslim protesters said they believed prolonging the standoff in the peace talks and continuing military offensive would extend the sufferings and agonies of Muslim civilians in Mindanao.

Simultaneous rallies were also held in the southern cities of Iligan, Tacurong, General Santos, Marawi, Pagadian and Maguindanao.

"It's everybody's knowledge that hundreds of civilians have been killed. More than half a million are now in a state of intolerance sufferings in different evacuation camps. They are left with nothing but uncertain future," said Abdulmanna Gayak, chair of spearheading group, Mindanao Alliance for Peace.

"We want Manila to respect, honor and implement the homeland deal," he added.

Peace talks between the government and the MILF was stalled last August after the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of the signing of an ancestral domain agreement that is considered instrumental in the peace progress.

Protest of Christian leaders and civilians in parts of Mindanao prompted the higher court to order the suspension.

Since then, clashes escalated between the government troops and rebels, displacing more than 600,000 people at the height of the crisis.

On Wednesday, fighting erupted again in Datu Piang township of Maguindanao province just as international aid workers were distributing assistance to thousands of the conflict-displaced refugees.

A representative of Roman Catholic priest, Rey Danilo Lacson, director of Notre Dame Peace Center, also called for immediate ceasefire and to stop further violence.

"We wish to wake up tomorrow and find our streets and places safe; violators and lawless men apprehended; justice be meted out and victims back to the freedom and safety of their homes," Lacson said.

The 11,600-member MILF is a splinter group from the larger Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) which was tamed after signing a peace agreement with the government in 1996.

Former war zone celebrates 17th year as peace sanctuary (http://www9.gmanews.tv/story/148986/Former-war-zone-celebrates-17th-year-as-peace-sanctuary)

KIDAPAWAN CITY– A war zone during the martial law years, an area in a town in North Cotabato celebrated last Sunday its 17th year as a ‘sanctuary of peace.’

The peace zone in Sitio Alimodian in Barangay Banayal in Tulunan town is one of the four embattled areas declared on February 15, 1992 as ‘sanctuaries of peace’ or ‘peace zones’.

Tulunan from the early ‘80s up to the late ‘90s was a ‘center’ of fighting between the New People’s Army (NPA) fighters and government soldiers, which led to the displacement of thousands of villagers, mostly B’laan natives and Ilonggo settlers.

Tulunan became known in ‘80s when Italian missionary Tulio Favali was shot dead and cannibalized by a leader of a cult.

Armed fighting and government neglect beset the areas for so long. There were then no schools, infrastructure and other basic services.

Due to calls by residents to spare them from the fighting, the Diocese of Kidapawan spearheaded the move to declare these areas as ‘zones of peace’.

One of the provisions of the Declaration of Zones of Peace in Tulunan was that no member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) or NPA would be allowed to enter the area with their firearms.

In November 2005, Cotabato 1st district Rep. Lala Talinio-Mendoza passed a resolution in Congress that supported peace-building initiatives in Tulunan town, in particular, the ‘Sanctuaries of Peace’.

She authored House Resolution Number 1981, which recognized and commended the newly created peace initiative, “Tri-boundary sanctuary of peace and development" of three groups of peoples in the boundary of Tulunan in North Cotabato, Datu Paglas in Maguindanao, and Columbio in Sultan Kudarat.

The B’laans in Columbio, the Maguindanaons in Datu Paglas, and the Ilonggo settlers in Tulunan signed a Community Peace Agreement, which ended the decades of conflict in the area, according to Mendoza.

“We need to strengthen peace-building efforts in Mindanao, like the Peace Zone in Sitio Alimodian and in other areas in Mindanao. Everybody gains from building peace. I urged concerned agencies to support and provide necessary assistance in sustaining these grassroots-peace initiatives," said Mendoza, one of key officials in North Cotabato that joined villagers from Sitio Alimodian in celebrating the declaration of their place as ‘peace zone’.

Tulunan Mayor Lani Candolada said the fighting should end so that healing could take place.

“There is so much pain and trauma brought about by wars," she said.

One of the villagers who is still haunted by the gruesome wars is 70-year old Prudencio Capalla, a member of the Sitio Alimodian Peace Zone council.

Capalla lost two of his children during the fighting in Tulunan. A stray bullet hit one of his children and the other died of malaria while taking refuge at an evacuation center in Tulunan.

When Sitio Alimodian was declared a ‘Peace Zone’ in 1992, Capalla was among those that benefited from it.

“I started plowing our field. My children had gone back to school," recounted Capalla.
He could only hope the armed groups, both from the military and the communist insurgents operating in Tulunan should respect the provisions of the Declaration of Peace Zone.

“I no longer want bloodshed in my place. I want peace. If there are again abuses from those in authority, we are giving the NPA rebels reasons to multiply or increase in number," he said in his native dialect.

GMA to inspect P45-million Davao-Cotabato bridge today (http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20090219148517.html)

MAKILALA, North Cotabato — In connection with her thrust of linking an effective transport network in the two frontier Southern Philippines’ region, President Arroyo is scheduled to inspect today the newly completed R45 million Malaang bridge here.

The new bridge will serve as linkage to the new route connecting the Davao-Cotabato road.

Central Mindanao is considered the rice granary in the southern island while Kidapawan City is also dubbed the major fruit basket in Mindanao.

The new bridge that connects the new access road was constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) as a replacementfor the existing double blind curve along the Malaang section, which according to traffic reports, have caused several road accidents.

Public Works and Highways Undersecretary Romeo S. Momo will brief the Chief Executive regarding the new Malaang Bridge that would provide safer and shorter route for travelers, particularly the business sector.

Momo said the new bridge will open up more economic opportunities and enhance access to social services in the two regions.

The construction of the bridge started in April 2007, and supervised by Central Mindanao DPWH Regional Director Sinaolan Macarambon and North Cotabato District Engineer Leonardo Martinez, Jr.

The Davao-Cotabato Road is the major arterial road that is being used to deliver goods of various businesses and services, said Momo.

Upon arrival here today, President Arroyo will be welcomed by Rep. Emmylou Talino-Mendoza (1st district, North Cotabato), Rep. Bernardo Piñol (2nd district, North Cotabato), North Cotabato Gov. Jesus Sacdalan, Vice-Gov. Emmanuel Piñol, Makilala Mayor Onofre Respicio and other ranking regional, provincial and city officials in Central Mindanao, including military and police officials.

Last week, the President was also in nearby Kidapawan City to personally look into the economic development and peace and order condition of the region, particularly the new proposed talks between the government panel and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

During her last visit, the sangguniang panlalawigan led by Vice-Gov. Piñol handed over several resolutions to the President in addressing the peace and order problem in the province of North Cotabato and the region.

North Cotabato palay harvest plunges due to flash floods (http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20090220148542.html)

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — North Cotabato Gov. Jesus Sacdalan said that palay production in the province, the top rice producer in Central Mindanao, is expected to plunge during this year’s first quarter due to the recent flash floods that damaged some R120 million worth of agricultural crops of six towns.

Sacdalan also said that flash floods damaged infrastructures in the affected areas worth R40 million, naming the hardest hit towns as Pikit, Kabacan, President Roxas, Magpet, Aleosan, and Carmen.

Reports of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council led by Chief Supt. Fidel Cimatu, who is also the Central Mindanao police chief, showed that rampaging floodwaters coming from the Kabacan River and Malmar irrigation dam in Carmen overflowed and inundated villages of the said towns.

Abusama M. Alid, Agriculture regional head for Central Mindanao, said North Cotabato produced 487,160 metric tons of paddy rice or un-milled palay from the 134,667 hectares of rice fields.

Apart from rice and corn as major crops, Sacdalan said, North Cotabato is also a known producer of exotic fruits, such as lanzones, rambutan and mangosteen, and rubber in the region.

The province is also an emerging banana-producing province in Mindanao with leading export fruit companies maintaining large banana plantations for export to the United States, Japan, Korea and the Middle East, especially Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

To alleviate the plight of farmers in North Cotabato, Sacdalan announced that the provincial agriculture office will provide replacement seedlings to affected farmers for their next cropping season to enable them to cope up with losses they suffered during the flash floods.

The victims, Michael Penafranda and his friend Julio, were walking home around 3:00 a.m. local time (1900 GMT Thursday) in the southern city of Kidapawan, North Cotabato province, when several motorcycle-riding attackers opened fire, killing them on the spot, said provincial governor Jesus Sacdalan.

A third companion of the victims, Ben Garcia, was seriously wounded and was confined at hospital for bullet wounds in his body.

"There's an ongoing investigation. Our police have launched an operation to capture the perpetrators," Sacdalan said.

Since October last year, 12 people, allegedly involved in illegal-drug trade, have been killed in separate attacks in Kidapawan.

Mechanized farming eyed to end rice importation (http://www.mb.com.ph/node/197504)
By Ali G. Macabalang , Bong M. Rebland

KIDAPAWAN CITY — The importation of about 10 percent of the country’s rice produce could be a thing of the past once Congress enacts a law that will set standards on mechanized farming, said Rep. Jun Piñol (2nd district, North Cotabato.)

The aim of the bill, Piñol said, is to put an end to the Philippines’ dependence on importing rice of a volume equivalent to 10 percent of the nation’s rice produce by increasing harvest and land area planted with rice, as well as save losses through efficient farming.

And in order to attain rice sufficiency, he said the Philippines must make a dramatic increase in rice production – at least 10 percent or 1.5 million metric tons or more, and this is attainable when farmers across the land are ordered by law to venture into mechanized farming.

He said the House committee on agriculture chaired by Rep. Braham Mitra of Palawan is convinced that the proposed measure mandating a standard for the manufacture and use of farm machines and implements, as well as post harvest facilities, would enhance rice production.

"The House Committee on Agriculture led by Rep. Braham Mitra is certain that a similar bill would be introduced at the Senate to ensure the passage of a law that would guarantee adequate rice supply for the country’s needs," Piñol said.

He said that last year, at the height of the rice crisis, the Philippines imported about two million metric tons of rice, mostly sourced from Vietnam, posting a R37 billion state subsidy for the National Food Authority (NFA), the biggest among all government-owned or controlled corporations.

Earlier, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said the country would lower its importation this year to about 1.5 million metric tons.

While NFA administrator Jessup Navarro noted that the 10 percent shortfall in rice produce in a year, such as last year, would not push the price of rice to a record level, but it was due to hoarding made by big rice traders and millers and the panic buying of consumers.

"If you spread out 10 percent to one year or 12 months, rice shortage vis-a-vis production to consumption, would only be a negligible, equivalent to less than one percent that would not push rice price increase," Navarro said.

But the top rice official said that a rice shortage situation out of the 10 percent annual shortfall would arise if traders hoard and consumers go on panic buying as the law of supply and demand would play, and in which case, NFA comes in to infuse low price rice.

Once the mechanized farming and fishery act is passed, Piñol explained that farmers are now obliged to use farm machines and farm implements for efficient farming, lesser production costs and lesser spoilage, and increase in yields.

He said funding requirements for the farmers to comply with the law would be provided by the Department of Agriculture under Secretary Yap, which has sufficient budget for the modernization of farming and fishing.

Piñol revealed that the proposed bill was introduced to him by a group of farmers, the association of agriculture machine manufacturers of the Philippines, Philippine Society Agricultural Engineers and the Fisheries National Council during a recent meeting at the University of the Philippines campus in Los Basnos, Laguna.

In that meeting, the farmers complained that farm machines made locally are not all quality made that when it breaks down, the cost of spare parts and service fees are too expensive, raising the cost of production thus shrinking the profit of farmers.

"This mechanized farming and fishing act was sought by the farmers for 20 years. They presented this to several lawmakers, yet no one adopted it," Piñol said, as he explained the merits of the proposed act that would eventually answer the problem on rice shortage and rice importation to do away with long lines of consumers to buy NFA rice.

The act would also encourage farmers to farm by groups so that the use of farm tractors and other machines and implements would be maximized with lesser costs, while losses during harvest, drying, threshing, bagging and milling would be minimized.

North Cotabato, Thailand tie-up on meat production (http://www.mb.com.ph/node/197727)
By Ali G. Macabalang

KIDAPAWAN CITY – North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Piñol recently traveled to Thailand in pursuit of what he described as his effort to help his hog raiser constituents "find better production market and overcome the effects of the worldwide economic crisis in the province."

In a statement before his flight to Bangkok, Piñol said he has set a meeting this week with top officials of the Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, a large Thai business conglomerate with interests in agri-business and food manufacturing, among others.

"This is a very big chance for us in our effort to continuously provide better income opportunities for our people," Piñol said regarding his official trip.

"CP is looking for chicken and hog meat suppliers, and we offer our province as a source for their needs. We do not only have the capability to produce the hogs but even the raw materials needed for feeds which is essential for the production of export quality hog meat," he added.

Piñol’s invitation to Bangkok came through the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP), which considered the implementation of an ongoing concept called Integrated Piggery and Poultry Project for Exports in North Cotabato.

The LBP is financing Piñol’s "Paghahayupan Tulong Pangkabuhayan," a private endeavor through his Braveheart Farms based in Barangay Paco here, which is already receiving tremendous positive response from local hog raisers, Office of the Vice Governor spokesman Carlos Bautista said.

Audit of Kidapawan water district looms amid mismanagement rap
MALU CADELINA MANAR, GMANews.TV

KIDAPAWAN, Philippines – How much have the allegedly footloose officials of the Metro Kidapawan Water District (MKWD) been spending on foreign travels?

The answer will hopefully known soon when a team of government auditors starts looking into the financial condition of the MKWD, one of the country’s biggest water districts.

Prospero Pichay, chairman of the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA), on Saturday said he is sending the auditors to Kidapawan next week amid allegations of mismanagement.

“Our aim here is to find out if indeed the funds were mismanaged or there was misuse of funds," said Pichay in an interview over radio station dxND.

Pichay said among the allegations is that top officials of the water district have travelled abroad six times in 2008 alone. Their travels were recorded on January 15, March 31, June 7, August 7, October 14, and Nov 11.

“We’ll try to find out if the agency has sought approval from the Office of the President in every foreign travel they made, which is a requirement in every GOCC (government-owned and controlled corporation," said Pichay.

He also tasked the audit team to look into the reported transaction entered into by MKWD with the Land Bank of the Philippines in 2008.

“I was told the agency has entered into a loan agreement with the Land Bank sometime last year without seeking a waiver from the LWUA. Such act, he stressed, violates Presidential Decree 198.

“It’s not a rule or a policy, it’s a law that they violated, if indeed that’s true," he said.
Under chapter 6, section 61, paragraph 6 of PD 198 or the Provincial Water Utilities Act of 1973, a local water utility may make loans after a feasibility study of any project is completed and loan funds shall be made by a consultant pre-qualified by LWUA.

Pichay said the request for MKWD’s audit came from Kidapawan Mayor Rodolfo Gantuangco and his vice mayor, Joseph Evangelista.

The LWUA has not conducted operational audit of MKWD since 2006 and Pichay cited as reason the lack of manpower of LWUA to perform such task.

“All over the country, we have more than 600 water districts. We do the audit at random. Since there was a request for audit, we have created a team to perform such task. This case is special," he said.

Gantuangco’s request for audit came after 22 employees of MKWD wrote him a petition on January 2009 that they want audit of the agency on a belief that funds were mismanaged since 2006. - GMANews.TV

Norwegian govt honors Pinoy farmer (http://http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2009/march/10/yehey/top_stories/20090310top8.htmlhttp://www.manilatimes.net/national/2009/march/10/yehey/top_stories/20090310top8.html)

A Filipino farmer from North Cotabato was again honored on the first anniversary of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway for showing the world that simple farmers like him upheld biodiversity through their indigenous knowledge.

Norway Minister of Agriculture and Food Lars Peder Brekk cited Eulogio Sasi Jr., who, despite only four years of formal education, was blessed with thousands of years of local agricultural know-how that was passed down to him from village elders.

“One year ago, when the Svalbard Global Seed Vault was officially opened, this room was filled with more than 150 invited guests representing 33 countries and five continents. Among them were the president of the European Community, Mr. Jose Manuel Barrosso; the Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Mr. Jacques Diouf; and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai. All contributed to our program, sharing their insights into the importance and impact of crop genetic diversity. But at this moment, I would like to mention another person who was present that day. One of the most memorable voices of that seminar, Mr. Tay Gipo—a subsistence farmer from the Philippines,” Brekk said, using the name that Sasi was more known for.

Sasi spoke during the opening conference of the Global Seed Vault on the Arctic island of Svalbard on February 25, 2008. He passed away on February 16, 2009, a few days before the first anniversary of the opening of the seed vault, at the age of 64 in President Roxas, North Cotabato, in southern Mindanao.

In a speech, Brekk said Sasi’s legacy remains in the fields of the Philippines, where his “Bordagol” is grown by his neighbors and their neighbors.

“Like other rice growers in the Philippines, Mr. Gipo switched to high-yielding, improved varieties in the late 1960s. But, he and his neighbors still struggled with pests and diseases, like the tungro virus. During a particularly tough year, he noticed one plant in his field that did not succumb to the virus. He literally had to pull the plant from the mouth of a farm animal who was planning to have it for a snack—he saved the seeds, replanted them and the next season he harvested 25 kilograms just from the seeds of that one plant. With his incredible success, the rice he himself named “Bordagol” was born,” he added.

Preserving a legacy

Brekk said that Sasi’s legacy remains as well in Svalbard, where seeds of his “Bordagol” are safely stored for the future.

“I mention his name for two reasons. One to illustrate how the field-level knowledge of our farmers continues to be the most important element of crop conservation. But also to keep his memory alive. Because just days ago we received word that our fellow agriculturalist, Tay Gipo, passed away this month at the age of 64,” he added.

In 1985, Sasi developed the rice variety that was resistant to pest and diseases. He named it “Bordagol,” a comic character from a children’s funny comics.

“I chose this name because the character, ‘Bordagol’ in the cartoon strip has a good trait and was able to save their planet. I thought that like the cartoon character, this plant could help us farmers because according to our elders, if a rice plant possesses purple tillers, it is resistant to disease,” he said during the launching of the global seed vault last year.

Simple story

Franco Esdrelon Jr., SEARICE Mindanao Program coordinator based in President Roxas, North Cotabato, said that “the simple story of Tay Gipo brought home the message to all governments about the role of farmers in seed conservation. He reminded all of us that the seeds being deposited in the Global Seed Vault and all the genebanks are products of generations of farmers’ knowledge and innovations across the world that are entrusted to this generation and for the future generation.”

Esdrelon worked with “Tay Gipo” and other farmers on conservation and development of agricultural biodiversity through promotion of farmer-breeding, use of local seeds and sustainable agriculture in President Roxas and in other farming communities in the provinces of Sultan Kudarat, Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental, also all in Mindanao.

“Tay Gipo has left a daunting challenge to the heads of governments in his speech during the opening of the seed vault last year. He posed the challenge that farmers’ contribution to agricultural biodiversity be recognized and supported,” he said.

SEARICE is a nongovernment organization based in Southeast Asia calling on the government to adopt strategies that will strengthen farmers’ access to production resources and technologies that reduce their dependence on external inputs particularly seeds.
