The official town site of Eldoret itself started in 1910 with a Post Office on what was known to the white settlers as "Farm 64", "64" or "Sisibo" to the locals because, at that time it was 64 miles from the newly built Uganda Railway railhead at Kibigori. [3]Willy van Aardt owned the farm. Peter van Aardt, now living in England, is Willy's great grandson. The Central Lounge in Eldoret is all that remains of Willy's farm.

In 1908, the Eldoret area had been settled by Afrikaans-speaking South Africans who "trekked" there from Nakuru after a journey from South Africa by sea and by rail from Mombasa. Other European and Asian settlers and traders began arriving shortly afterwards.

When the governor decided to establish an administrative centre, the Post Office was renamed from "64" with the official town name as "Eldoret" in 1912.[2] Becoming an administrative centre caused an enormous increase in trade within the prospective city. A bank and several shops were built.[2]

Eldoret-Kampala pipeline compensation for March
Written by PAUL MWIJAGYE
Saturday, 28 February 2009
KAMPALA, UGANDA - The construction of the much awaited Eldoret-Kampala oil pipeline is hoped to begin in April.

Preparations are underway to compensate the people that will be affected by the project.

In an interview with EABW, the energy ministry's commissioner for petroleum, Ben Twodo said the survey had been completed and submitted to the chief government valuer. He, however, noted that since the handing over of the survey not much progress has been realized.
"The chief government valuer has done some work though not all and so far there is nothing that we can say will stop the commencement of the project," Twodo said.

On July 18, 2006 Tamoil East Africa won a 20-year concession to finance and extend the 320km oil pipeline from Eldoret to Kampala at a cost of $72 million.

The work has been postponed several times, hampering stable fuel supply to Uganda, a situation that has led to escalating prices.

A recent analysis of the economic indicators for the second half of 2008 reveals that in spite of the fall in international crude oil prices by over 70%, between early July 2008 and early August 2008, there has been no significant reduction in fuel prices in Uganda.

http://www.kbc.co.ke/images/pictures/North_terminal.jpg

Average pump prices in Kampala for petrol and diesel remained as high as Shs2,650 and Shs2, 200 respectively in February, 2009.

In upcountry areas, the price is higher by about 15%-20%.

This has resulted in increased food prices, high commodity prices and transport costs which in turn contributed to high inflation rates. Food crops inflation rose to 33.7% in August from 20.5% in July 2008 on account of high transport costs.

The cost of transporting oil varies between $38 and $42 per cubic metre, an expense that is expected to decline significantly with completion of the project.

Tamoil has a 51% stake in the project, while Uganda and Kenya governments are holding an equal share of the remaining 49%.

Kenya pipeline link to Uganda oil fields proposed
Eric Watkins
OGJ Oil Diplomacy Editor

LOS ANGELES, Mar. 30 -- Kenya's Mombasa-to-Eldoret oil pipeline could eventually be extended to Uganda's Albertine rift basin—site of promising recent oil discoveries—once the line has been extended to Kampala, Uganda.

Habib Kagimu, chairman of Tamoil Uganda Ltd., which in 2006 won the tender to construct the 360-km pipeline extension from Eldoret, Kenya, to Kampala, said his firm's current plans also call for extending the pipeline from Kampala to the Albertine rift in Uganda to transport oil from fields there to the Port of Mombasa on the Indian Ocean for global export (see map, OGJ, Feb. 16, 2009, p. 34).

Echoing earlier statements by Ugandan officials, Kagimu confirmed, over Uganda's national WBS TV, that work on the often-delayed pipeline extension from Eldoret to Kampala will start in April and will take 15 months to complete, with a further extension of the line to the Rift area already in the planning stages.

"Our engineers have designed the pipeline in such a way that in the future, it will be able to transport oil from Uganda back to Mombasa for export," said Kagimu, who added that the pipeline eventually could also be extended from Kampala to Rwanda and Burundi.

There remains debate over the extension to the Albertine rift basin, however, as some Ugandan officials oppose the construction of the export link and instead propose retaining the oil to be refined in Uganda, a proposal that Tumoil and exploration firms Heritage Oil, and Tullow Oil reject as not feasible.

In January, Ugandan state media reported that Uganda and Kenya had formed a joint
coordination committee to fast-track the Eldoret-Kampala pipeline, which had been postponed several times since 2006.

The New Vision newspaper reported that harmonizing bilateral and international agreements defining legal, commercial, financial, taxation, transportation, and custom issues had delayed the pipeline project. According to the Ugandan energy ministry, however, most of these issues have been resolved, and it also expects work on the extension to Kampala to start in April.

Libya-based Tumoil, which in 2006 won the tender to construct the line, will hold a 51% stake in the pipeline, while Uganda and Kenya will jointly hold the remaining 49%.

Recent oil finds
The pipeline extension plans coincide with recent oil discoveries by Tullow Oil and Heritage Oil in blocks they operate and share in Uganda (OGJ Online, Mar. 27, 2009).

Heritage and Tullow hold interests in three licenses on the Ugandan side of the Lake Albert rift basin. Heritage is operator of Blocks 1 and 3A, holding a 50:50 stake with Tullow, while in Block 2 Tullow is operator with a 100% stake.

Tullow and Heritage earlier this month said that exploration in Uganda has shown reserves of at least 600 million bbl.

"Mimi ninalo Jambo lanisumbua akili. Ulimwengu ume pasuka mahali. Mungu alipanga usiku saa ya kulala. Sasa usiku umegeuka mchana na mchana ni kama usiku."

These words from Jamnazi Africa’s song Riziki, describing how people have turned the day into night and night into day, would best capture Eldoret’s Oginga Odinga Street.

The street is a hive of activities with heavy human and traffic flow throughout the day and night. And this has nothing to do with the Government’s 24-hour economy drive.
The street named after freedom fighter and the father of Opposition politics the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga has, over time, gained prominence in the town leaving other streets in the shadows.

The street is a town within itself and self-contained as far as pleasures of this world are concerned. In fact unknown to many, this street was behind the hit song Riziki.

Jamnazi Africa’s leader Mike Otieno alias Awilo says the behaviour and activities along the street is no different from what take place in Mombasa. Yet he is surprised because Eldoret is still a young town, in fact a village compared to Mombasa and Nairobi.

"The street is self-contained more like a one-stop-shop because you will get whatever you want. Business is brisk all day and through out the night and it would be hard to tell what time of the day and night it is by looking at the crowd," he says.

Once darkness sets in like night creatures creeping out of their holes, traders of the night emerge. Among them are tea sellers who offer the beverage complete with bread commonly known as bandika. You’d have no idea how famous bandika until you see the eager clients lining up for it.

"It is sweet and in constant supply due to the demand. It draws customers from other areas as well," says Awilo.

The tea business aside, there are those who sell boiled eggs, roasted groundnuts who seem to target men keen to bolster their potency.

"The mobile boiled eggs and roasted ground nut traders roam the streets from the upper to the lower side and business is brisk. The demand is high for the two commodities because it is believed that they give more energy to men on randy missions," reveals a client who declined to give his name.

The joy of the street according to Awilo is that it has everything that can appeal both to the rich and the poor. Unlike places like Nairobi where certain streets are the preserve of the rich and others for the not so well to do, Oginga Odinga Streets takes in all.

A 24-hour economy

Joining the street from the main Uganda-Nairobi Highway reveals clusters of popular pubs and nightclubs majority, which operate a 24-hour schedule. One might be forgiven to think that they are competing with one another going by the decibels from each one of them.

As it happens with most clubs and bars flesh peddlers will be seen haggling over prices with willing clients. The deals are always clinched when the two are seen melting into the darkness hand in hand.

Others will disappear into the nearby low cost lodges for the duration of the time they agreed and the lodges will charge accordingly.

The twilight girls hang outside the nearby booths, clubs and other facilities from where they are able to spot their potential clients 50 metres away. Some of them usually cross to the other side of the road once they have spotted a potential client whom they take to the joints depending on the ‘swelling’ of his pocket.

According to John Mwangi a resident who operates a business along the street there are two categories of call girls operating along the streets. There are those whose value begins from Sh20 to Sh100 while there are those whose value starts from Sh50 to Sh500 depending on the agreed duration.

The girls live together in fours and often work in shifts since some of them have children. So when three of them go to work one is left to care for the children. The other three share their spoils with the one left at home.

A regular on the street, Mwangi has seen the best and the worst of the women. While some are extremely beautiful and definitely not cut out for the streets, others are too ugly to even deserve a second look.

John Otieno a resident says the street has some of the oldest brothels in town and modern hotels that are frequented by different clients.

"You won’t be shocked to find that rooms in these brothels have been paid for by the prostitutes and your work is to finish your business and disappear," he says.

A price for all

Otieno says the cheapest brothels are found on the lower side of the street leading to Eldoret-Kisumu Highway. Here there are around five brothels. The clients who frequent these brothels pay anything between Sh20 to Sh100. Of course when one pays 20 bob, their expectations are also cheap.

The prostitutes found here are often dirty, haggard not to mention old. One thing for sure they are 20 bob worth and nothing more. Mwangi says even in some of the modern hotels along the streets, high-class prostitutes have rented the rooms saving the clients the trouble of looking for accommodation. Whether the money for accommodation is charged in the final figure is hard to tell.

It is a booming business and the owners of the premises have no problems with the ladies renting the rooms provided they pay. This according to many is the modern day Sodom and Gomorah.

There are over 50 bars along the street and most of them are operational through out the night and day and they are ever packed with people. You wonder whether these patrons ever have any other thing to other than drink.

Bendine Kipruto prefers the street because it has four supermarkets with one operating 24 hours and providing the residents and visitors of any product or item they would require in the night. Her chances of getting whatever she wants here are high.

"This is the hub of business in town. From all corners you will find supermarkets and eateries that operate 24 hours. It is self fulfilling and safe too," she says.

Apart from the supermarkets there are three banks along the street.

"You do not have to worry about where to eat because it is only along the street where we have 24 hour fast foods. The street is a complete stretch," she adds.

Altonen Chumba a resident in Eldoret, says along the street are 24 hour pharmacies that allow clients to purchase drugs whatever the time of the day or night. Vegetable and fruit sellers are a common sight in the middle of the night with their young ones strapped on their backs.

Other kids can be seen running up and down the street while their mother sells her wares. There are also hawkers of videos who bare the wares at night including x-rated collections.

Like in any civilisation crime is never far from such places. The street is also a favourite with drug users and peddlers alike. The peddlers will not sell to you unless they know you or you have been taken to them by one of their trusted clients to avoid detection by law enforcers.

Crime is never far

Some of the criminals collude with the prostitutes who help them identify their targets from the binging dens. Once a target has been spotted, the prostitutes would give a sign or leave pretending that she is going to the ladies but will meet the crooks on the corridors and brief them on the target.

Along these streets there are street boys who act as parking controllers both at night and in the day at a fee. They also act security providers for those who have parked their vehicles. The taxi operation here is 24 hour and like in many towns it is also a sector rife with criminals.

A local journalist was pick-pocketed by some of the taxi operator after he had just walked from an ATM lobby and in a different incident two other journalists who had spent the evening quenching their thirst also fell prey to the thieving taxi operators.

One of the journalists had just walked from one of the pub and in his drunkard state jumped into one of the taxi. Instead of being taken to his destination, he was taken to Riverside where he was robbed and beaten up.

For motorists, cheap fuel will only be found in petrol stations that operate along this street. No one can tell why the fuel is fairly cheap here.

The street also has three colleges and the offices of a local media house. For men who want a massage, most of the saloons and health parlours along the street are handy in providing the services.

Eldoret, many believe, would have been different place had Oginga Odinga Street not been there. It makes the town tick with freshness and complexities of life.

Eldoret’s rich live in peace and quiet

Published on 04/06/2009

http://www.eastandard.net/images/thursday/ha040609_03.jpg
It is home to Eldoret’s affluent, and the serene environment in Elgon View Estate makes it perfect for comfort living. Located South of Eldoret town just ten minutes drive from the Central Business District (CBD), the estate is zoned for low-density residential buildings, mostly bungalows and maisonettes.

It is strategically located along the Eldoret-Kapsabet Road, which leads to the Eldoret International Airport. In it’s surrounding are Eldoret State Lodge, the Eldoret Sports Club, Eldoret Club and major hospitals. Well performing private schools like Hill Primary and secondary schools, Eldoret Seminary High School, Testimony primary and secondary schools are within its neighbourhood.

Electricity and water is excellently supplied to the estate, which also has a fairly good road network. The tranquillity of the estate has attracted non-governmental organisations that have set up their headquarters within the estate. They include the United Nations offices, the World Food Programme and the Kenya Red Cross Society among others.

The estate is home to prominent politicians, athletes, businessmen and religious leaders in Eldoret and the larger North Rift region. Security is tight with alarm systems and guards in every home Residents have jealously protected the serenity of the estate and have opposed plans to establish commercial buildings that would disrupt serenity.

Recently, the residents were up in arms over plans by the Kenya Red Cross to put up and Sh200 million five-star hotel. Led by retired athlete Kipchoge Keino, the residents said past attempts by developers to put up commercial buildings have been rejected.

against constructions
"Since 1979, no application for change of user from residential property to commercial has been approved. We wonder why this one is an exception," said Keino. The residents say apart from the proposed development setting a precedent for other commercial investments, it would generate noise, affect security and corrupt the morals of youth in the neighbourhood.

But Kenya Red Cross Governor, Paul Birech denied that the hotel would affect the tranquillity of the neighbourhood, instead saying it would add value to the area. He cited street lighting, improved sanitation services, construction of a tarmac leading to the hotel, as some of the benefits to the neighbourhood.

"The structure (hotel) will be put up to standard and the guest house will be noise free," Birech assured the residents. Consultations over the planned construction of the hotel are still going on. Until recently, the estate was not served by any public transport, as every household own at least two vehicles. The introduction of tuk tuks is meant to serve middle class residents of the estate who have rented servant quarters.

seeking extra coins
"Due to harsh economic times, we have had to rent out the servant quarters for additional income from our houses," said Peter Cheruiyot, a businessman living in the estate. The servants are then forced to rent houses in adjacent low class estates like the neighbouring Langas, reporting for work early and leaving in the evening.

Rent at Elgon View estate range between Sh20,000 to Sh50,000 a month, depending on the tenant. Individuals pay between Sh20,000 and Sh30,000 while NGOs, companies and churches pay up to Sh50,000. Servant quarters are rented out at between Sh5,000 to Sh7,000 a month, depending on the size.

Security at the estate is tight with most tenants hiring private security firms to protect their property, most of which are installed with alarm systems. Guards from the firms patrol the estate, where homes also have fierce dogs like German Shepherds to ward off criminals.

The posh nature of Elgon View Estate has influenced development of high-class residential homes in the neighbouring Outspan area. The area was initially land belonging to the defunct East Africa Tanning and Extract Company, which was bought by individuals for private development.
