the plantrooms only occupy the top section which is top 4 levels, so should bea few more typical levels.

Being as modest as possible, but I am proud of this shot of Rialto's construction that I took last Saturday afternoon, showing that beautiful growing black glass fin on the cnr of Pitt and Bathurst Streets:

I think we have that impression as it is now taller than Energy Australia Tower. It's progressing quite well. It's just that Cul needs to keep us informed on floor movements.

Looks great. Sound silly, the building would look more outstanding if Energy Australia was torn down (did I type the right thing?). The gap between the two buildings are very close.

Reason why i don't like Energy Australia building its dark, its built right to street edge (no set back), and very blocky. The surrounding building eg HSBC and now Rialto, the architecture is more creative. Rather than tearing down the Woolworth building.

hey, energy Australia was there first!!!lol it was a classy modern scraper back in 68! Its called "internationlist style" architecture. back in 1960's the office block was a new strcutyre type so set backs and sheer walls were all the go!
The woolworth bldg-now that can be torn down! without a shed of tear! it was originally buitl in 1928 as 5 storeys and added to in 56 to current height. It WILL be torn down in 2020 when council regain lease and build extension to Sydney SQuare there.

It's a bad mistake to pull the Woolies building down. It has historical significance in relation to retailing in the CBD, not to mention it's location - cnr of Park and George. I'm going to really miss the atmosphere and experience of being in there.

This tower is the least exciting of all new Sydney highrises. Design is mediocre and impact on skyline minimal....

In fact Rialto has only ruined a beautiful Century Tower vista from Pitt St Mall! Instead of gorgeous CT spire we'll be looking at the crappy 'boxy' top of Rialto!

CULWULLA
November 17th, 2003, 10:58 AM
heres a quick diagram showing current status of rialto. ive traced an elevation i had of bathurst st face. As you can see not long to go.
the top plantroom which is equal to nearly two floors will be steel framed aluminium clad structure so probably wont top out this year, but concrete will!

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/photopost/data/500/126aspectdrawing-med.jpg

finn- the aluminium clad (charcoal colour) box top starts at level 39.

i think it was at ground level in january this year so whole 137m/43st structure built in 12 months is pretty bloody good going!

Rialto will have some impact on the skyline mainly when viewed directly from the east (see model shot below) and directly west where there is little protruding in the way (energy Australia will actually look quite small). It stands out quite well from those angles, otherwise it's pretty much hidden away when viewed from other angles.

Yep I should be in the top of novtel tomorrow night
After like 2 months get to see rialto from that angle
Will post expect some impact
But really the tower is not that wide and in cluster
Its getting harder to mack impact on Sydney Skyline
that more out our density that this tower which if placed in another Australian City would make impact on sky line
12 month Cul that pretty grand there !

climbing_crane,

Your last pic post is excellent - full marks to you; 101%.

What a cluster is forming there...and will even become more so when Latitude tops out, East @ Latitude starting construction relatively soon, when Meriton Tower is completed, on completion of Aspect/Quest, along with 101 Bathurst Towers 1 & 2 and 114 Liverpool Streets' Apartments.

Sydney's midtown/uptown (uptown being towards Central Square) is going to be just scraper canyon heaven.

Forgot to mention Civic Tower, 720 George Streets' apartments and Cassia Garden to boot.

Once again, thanks c_c :okay:

the "crown" top of Park regis houses the Lift Motor Room.(cleverly disguised). Remember it was designed in 1965. It nearly doubled the height of any Oz tallest flats previously!

To me it's a stunner because of the glass and how they were able to integrate it with the white facade. The rooftop when complete is going to be incredible - one of the best for a meriton scraper.

It didn't seem all that long ago that many forumers were waiting for Rialto to peer over The Energy Australia building from the west.

Well, now it most definitely has and will.

Even Rialto's remaining core is way over Engery Australia especially viewed from the Darling Harbour overpasses - in particular William Henry Street's overpass.

With Energy Oz being 99m / 325ft, Rialto will be 137m / 449ft, it's going to be quite a noticeable height difference, esp. being side by side.

Nice photo.

For me I stopped taking photos from close range not long ago. When it gets to a certain height you don't really notice much of a difference, even if there's been a few floor rises.

Looking good from Darling Harbour though.

Is the pic taken from Hyde Park CULWULLA? Looks like 227 and 201 Elizabeth Street on either side and the angle of Rialto is at approx. 15 degrees. Haven't seen a pic showing both the glass finn and the northern facing balconies at the same time before. A first! :okay:

Nice work dudes.
I get a look at Rialto many times each day from the inner west and I'm impressed with its impression in the skyline panorama.
I thought it'd barely break free of Energy Aust tower in front of it, however it's providing a nice 'hump' in the skyline ( in an area where it's needed ) which is almost on a par with 500 foot Peak and HSBC just down the hill !

It starts to disappear from the Pitt st mall northwards, but not a total disappearance.

Even at the northern end jammed wall to wall with scrapers, you can still manage to see at least a bit of it. It actually fills the little void of blue sky when you look south - giving that impression that Pitt St is not a through road. All importantly, it does add to the skyscraper wall we see on the street :D

This photo doesn't do alot of justice, but I hope you understand what I'm on about

For a pre-fab modern structure, the style says "skyscraper" in a classic kinda way, esp. on the angles where firstly, Fabian just caught it and also further along Bathurst towards E-Street (lol c_c).

The black fin sets this building apart. I don't know of any other scraper that resembles this one.

finn
January 26th, 2004, 11:10 AM
I've never really thought a lot about the design of Rialto, but it is surprisingly good for a Meriton project!

The south-east corner of the tower is the only one that could responsibly have been designed with the full glazing - it is the aspect receiving the least direct sunlight and thus the least solar heat gain, and looks great in defining and highlighting the Pitt/Bathurst corner.

Similarly well designed, the northerly aspect is ideal for the large balconies, as the balconies will stop direct summer heat while allowing the warmth of the lower angle sun of the winter months. The balconies will eventually overlook the new extension of "Sydney Square" when Woolies etc. is demolished, and give a fantastic people-watching vantage point for the residents!

Only issue is the top portion of the Western facade, which will receive direct sunlight - although the majority of that wall is sheltered from this heat by Energy Australia.

'Tis a well-designed tower! If it were available for sale to the public I would recommend it as a good medium-term investment! :okay:

Yep, pretty much all residential with the exception of some streetfront retail and some offices in the first couple of lower floors.

The tower will actually be all rental units, as Meriton are not offering the apartments for private sale! Same deal with Meriton Tower.

demanjo

It would be nice if they constructed it so the nice glass sections would be for office use, with the balcony sections reserved for residential.
But that would be wierd mixing both on each floor.

The 8 level podium will consist of commercial suites (the hoardings advertise commercial) and the main tower above that are all residential suites (for hire from Meriton as the landlord). Plant levels of course too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again and agian and....Every time I look at this one on the 'black fin side', it truly looks like a traditional skyscraper. I think this one's design will prove to be ageless. :okay:

Wow, i really cant get over how much i love this one!
Its exactly 137.36m/450ft tall above corner of Bathurst/Pitt sts. Its 55 levels in total and 45 above ground. The reason it seems taller is that its only 25m wide. Perfect skyscraper proportions!

As the properties out the back of the premisis get filled and hide that dull balcony aspect, i think it will make a very very nice street level, dense skyscraper patch.

LOVE the front of this one... as i said, seems like something you'd find in Simcity it is that perfect.

yeah the northern aspect isnt that pretty, just another highrise apartments. But what makes Rialto special is its design adaption to the southeast cnr. As a council requirement it had to address the corner aspect with with no open balcs just glazing. due to southerly aspect. (no sun access).

finn
March 7th, 2004, 07:33 AM
I really like the northern facade - looks excellent and is the perfect treatment for that side considering the solar access - great for big balconies and for the living room area inside, with the depth of the balconies shielding from the intense northern sun in summer but allowing sun in winter.

ParraMan
March 7th, 2004, 04:42 PM
I've gotta agree with finn there, aside from the obvious solar potential of the northern side, and I would prefer all glass glazing there to what is there, the way it is now is very open, not much white or off-white wall (yuk!) and displays a living, breathing space. I take back what I said in an earlier post criticising this aspect.

Cheers

Muse
March 8th, 2004, 03:58 AM
In regard to the northern aspect, design-wise and not considering the practicalities of the sun, it only makes the Bathurst Street side all the (so much) better. It's like standing next to the frump @ the party so you can look even more spectacular ;)

It's souless and featureless. I really don't wanna see somebody's undies hanging out to dry yet again. I saw on the old Bradmill Factory's conversion into apartments (Parramatta Rd, Camperdown) that somebody is growing creeping vines to completely cover their open baclonies. It looks great and they can dry their undy-panz out there all they like!

Fabian
March 8th, 2004, 08:22 AM
I find the eastern side of the tower to be my favourite side designwise because of the balance between the glass and white facade. The northern side is quite boring and makes it look like any other tower.

On the weekend I saw a newly installed BMU hard at work.

Wish I had my camera with me to snap a pic, but alas.

Keep your eyes peeled - it looks huge on such a slender tower.

im pretty sure it was always going to be "charcoal grey" panels. this what plans indicated. I talked to meriton today about another project but asked the guy about Rialto while i had him on phone and he said the top will be finished this month!!!! so June will be the month Rialto will be completed "externally". so quick!

I spotted a Meriton Logo afixed to the black plantroom today - it's very promonient as you approach the city from the west.

Yes, on the western side. It looks like it might be for illumination....might be.

The matt finish on the platroom box is looking quite interesting on the skyline. An unusual touch to top it (the tower) off and a nice contrast to the main colouring of the tower.

Gee they're quick. The Meriton logo was lit very brightly atop today in the grey rainy skies.

hmmmm, there not supposed to put any logo atop Rialto! this was a condition especially promoting the M for Meriton! either council lost the court case which involved residential towers not being aloud to have any signage on top what so ever.
The only thing i can think of is if Rialto is purely serviced apartments which i thought harryT changed his mind over. now im confused?

I'm pretty sure Rialto has always been all serviced apartments - or at least all rental units.

a few weeks ago meriton lodged a DA for a sign on plantroom faing the north, it was the whole word MERITON. it was knocked back so maybe there aloud to have a small M at the side?

The only thing i can think of is if Rialto is purely serviced apartments which i thought harryT changed his mind over. now im confused?Yeah, I read in the Fin. Rev. weeks ago that Meriton was giving up on the idea. Ross Korcass was saying that it was just getting too difficult for Council approval for Rialto, Meriton Tower and The Premier Section of World Tower to be used as serviced apartments.

Maybe the decision has been reversed again. :?
