Finally, Casablance needs one really bad. I mean a metropolis without a metroline, thats just silly.

2017.....

It takes time to drill tunnels under a living city, it took much longer in cities like New York, Chicago, Madrid, Moscow,..etc

Algiers it's not really a reference, they got a lot a financial problems and it hasn't opened yet!

For example in Toulouse (where i live) the line B of Toulouse Metro (15km and 20 stations) took just 7 years of construction (from 2001 to 2007)

Another example, the metro of Sevilla, work started in 2003, and the line 1 (19km and 22 stations) will open in September 2008

algiers and sevilla has good geology but casablanca with its unstable geology will make the work much harder and longer

We don't have to care about this, when they'll be ready it will be ok!

how long did it took to build the metro in algiers?

it started back in 1992 but froze in the 90s during the civilian war in algeria but now when things slightly calmed down they continued with the project which would be ready by december if every thing goes well.

A feasibility study for this metro line was carried out in 1999-2000: http://www.ipe.co.at/upload/projektblatt/casablanca_en.pdf

It think they still want to built the same line that was proposed by this study. The idea was to built a southern elevated part and a northern underground part (from the highway to the center).

An image from this study, on which you can see the proposed stations:

It hasn't start yet because they found some problems (see the picture) so they had tu cancel the aperture that was announced for dic. 20th and postpon it till debut of 2009.
and the most important is that they didn't finish the works yet, only the line Nº 1 is ready.

I don't know why it will take so long. In the city that i'm living the new line of the skytrain( the local metro ) will take just 4/5 years; it started in October 2005 and it should be done in November 2009.
They're using a new way that's known as cut-and-cover http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c0/Image_Granvillemallskytrain.jpg
