The first Carrefour in Pakistan was planned for Dolmen City. But due to delay in construction of Dolmen City, it did not mature. But its still alive.

Carrefour in Lahore was planned later, but due to its location, its comleting earlier as it was not depending upon completion of any Mall.

So, there is definitely Carrefour coming in Karachi..... InshAllah

other Carrefours around the world usually have a food court and shoppes iand then their supermarket in the back. usually they leave some shoppes to be leased inside not sure about this one though...

the good thing about Carrefour is they have a gourmet Deli area that usually makes the local popular foods of the country in a a hygienic way and its cheap too....

This project is not launching as Carrefour anymore, now its called Hyperstar

I think this will still open in the Carrefour style but just not under their brand.

From where u get this information? Also provide us the source. If this is true information, then it is a very bad & sad news for us.

"Carrefour opening soon" billboards are installed all over lahore....

It is actually a carrefour but HYPER STAR is placed on the billboard at fortress stadium just because to differentiate between super market and hyper market. but there is still under carrefour else hyper star is not a brand or organization itself.
it is a chaos provided by the company for awareness of the hyper market in Lahore.

I believe this was originally supposed to be Carrefour but now for some reason this is opening under this new brand "Hyperstar".

This is still part of MAF Hypermarkets but I'm not sure of the reason for this change. Will update if I get any further info.

theres an ad in may 12 of "HYPERSTAR" in DAWN newspapers...i hope they have lots of imported stuff cuz there rest of the stuff can be bought from metro also

theres actually a chain of supermarkets in USA that operats under 2 names so maybe its not such a bad things since the logo is similar to carrefour...ps some one can post the ad from E -dawn newspaper here as i dont know how

Here's an update, went to Hyperstar yesterday during the opening and its quite good, very busy of course for opening day. I went only through the Food and Grocery floor (Ground Floor). They have a lot of imported items and some very good deals were available with promotional offers. Generally it is very well laid out and good spacing between the aisles.

The 1st floor has Clothing, Electronics, Toys, etc.

The store is very large with 91,500 sq. foot covered area (both floors combined). Also, there is no minimum purchase requirement or membership required.

I think this will be successful because of their good product range and ideal location.

and i know its hyperstar but about half of the food products sold in their intl stores are under thier own house "Carrefour brand" so check if its true with this location also since they called it Hyperstar

For those who're wondering why in the hell is the quantity of the stock mentioned, it's coz it's a practice inherited from abroad. It's to guard against litigation-happy people who sue when they don't find the cheap items and claim the shop was baiting-and-switching.

I think it's a good idea to inform customers of the quantity of stock. If I see a product I really want to buy and I see that its quantity is really limited, I will go out and get it ASAP.

Yeah the grand opening was done on Wednesday May 13th and this was opened by the French Ambassador to Pakistan and the Lahore Corp. Commander.

LAHORE: French Commercial Counsellor in Pakistan, Dominique Simon, has said that the European Union is considering giving market access to Pakistani products. A meeting between the EU and Pakistan is scheduled to be held on June 17 in Brussels which would discuss market access for Pakistani products to the EU market.

“The meeting would be chaired by President Zardari because everybody is supporting Pakistan in what it is doing. Hence, in difficult times we should not only support Pakistan but also provide an easy access for Pakistani products to European Union markets,” disclosed Simon in an exclusive interview with The News.

In comparison to India, Pakistan’s economy is open for foreign investors. Pakistan is the second largest partner of France in the South Asian region and France always gives it preference.

Simon said that the richness of Pakistan’s economy is its young population which gives it a comparative advantage over others. Bilateral trade between Pakistan and France is in favour of Pakistan as France had exported $550 million worth of goods to Pakistan last year and imported goods worth $650 million. France is supporting Pakistan in balancing its trade, Simon said.

“France always wants to increase Pakistan’s exports rather than increasing its imports from France to help balance its current account.”

Talking about Pakistan’s cellular industry growth, he said the Pakistani market consists of a customer base of 92 million, whereas, the European market has a customer base of 45 million. Anyone in Pakistan can easily get their hands on a SIM card and Wimax connection as compared to Europe.

Talking about the current economic situation, Simon said the situation is difficult not only for Pakistan but also for the world as everyone was affected by the international economic meltdown. But Pakistan has developed a new middle class market in its last ten years of growth, while the middle class is still emerging. He said that this middle class consists of 20 per cent of the total market and of 30 million people which is more than that in any Scandinavian market.

Referring to his first meeting with Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance, Shaukat Tarin, he said he had asked Tarin to bring down the current account deficit at least under 4 per cent, as at that time France’s current account deficit was at 3.6 per cent. But now, due to the economic recession, the current account deficit of France has climbed to over 5 per cent.

Quoting the example of Hyper Star, a French hypermarket that has started its business in Pakistan, Simon said that the basic purpose of these markets is to provide an opportunity for Pakistani producers to increase their production level up to international standards. He mentioned that nine more hyper markets were being planned in Lahore. The second would be established in Karachi, the third again in Lahore, the forth in Faisalabad, and the fifth in Islamabad, he added.

Referring to easy business opportunities, he said the Hyper Market was trying to start business in India for the last ten years but the Indian legislation is too strict which is why they still haven’t been able to launch their operations in India. This is one of the main reasons why France considers Pakistan’s economy more open in this region, as compared to the others.

Responding to a query about the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Simon said France is a member of the European Union and being a member of the EU, it could not take any decisions individually. However, France has been focusing on providing an opportunity to Pakistan in the textile sector as it has not been producing textile goods and has instead been importing from China and Bangladesh.

Talking about French investments in Pakistan, Simon mentioned that 45 companies were settled in Pakistan while over 400 companies are working here. Quoting a leading French oil marketing company in Pakistan, he said that the company has planned to increase its stations to over 400 in the next two years and is also going to launch a lubrication blending plant in Karachi next month. The use of CNG in cars is also an environment friendly step by Pakistan, as almost half of its total cars are running on CNG, Simon remarked.

To a question regarding media role in the economic development and the mudslinging by western media on Pakistan, he said the western media is busy trying to break news the quickest and, hence, at the end of day, they are basically not doing much else.

^^ 100% agree with you, the store looks fantastic products are great and prices are not that high compare to wanna be “western” stores…..and I sure this will send a strong positive signal to other local and international investors………. but when it comes to service you will still find that “desi attitude” people in electronics and gardening section don’t have or have very little product knowledge not friendly at all….

Rather than label it a "desi attitude" it sounds more like poor management. Good managment trains employees on proper customer care and service. I hope execs from France come to Pakistan to ensure proper training is conducted for ALL employees. :)

For those who have a hard time understanding 0.9 + 0.1 = 1.0, not 0.0.

24 hours time-system is commonly used in Military and, at least in US, it's also called "Military Time". For everyday use, it's a bit complicated, hence the standard all over the world is AM/PM.

The irony is if they had used the 11:59PM notation, then there would have been a bunch of posts here about this "ridiculous timming", and why not just write 12:00 instead of 11:59

lol, thats just silly, its become like mcdonalds now, a low class resturant ment for the middle/lower income people but in pakistan its totaly the oppersite and ment for upper class.

makro and metro have targeted the right market, carefour need to do that

^^This hypermarket is in Fortress. Taxi or Rickshaw driver will obviously know Fortress.

So i guess this proves that the one in lahore is the real deal.

That Hyperstar was added by some Paki. There's no mention of Hyperstar on the internet or Carrefour's website. On their website, on the right bottom you'll see a scroll of all their hypermarket brands (incl. Atacadao and several otehrs), but no Hyperstar. That's why I'm not sure what the deal is.

Carrefour's franchise partner in the Middle East, Majid Al Futtaim (MAF), plans to open 10 hypermarkets in Pakistan over the next five years.

As already reported, the retailer opened its first hypermarket in the country in May. The outlet is in Lahore, near the Indian border, at an investment of nearly EUR15 million (USD19.5 million). For security reasons, the hypermarket did not open under the Carrefour banner, but under the Hyperstar banner. After the first year, the retailer expects a turnover of EUR35 million (USD45.6 million).

That's what I thought too, it wasn't opened under the name of Carrefour due to security reasons. Still most people call it Carrefour, which is fine.

I just wanted to correct one misnomer that "hyperstar" name is chosen due to security reasons. In reality it is the super store version of french chain carrefour just like super Kmart or like target super store. Pakistan with its 35million population caping at roughly$10000 per year has the pottential of many more stores like this. I believe Lahore alone has potential to have at least 50 or more store.

what kind of security reasons make you change your name.

interestingly when everyone knows that it is carrefour.... u cannot hide by changing your name if God forbid u are a target...!!

I visited the store last week. The shelves were stocked full and the place was packed with shoppers. YES !!

very interesting, that solves the mystery. Carrefour is publically distancing itself from the new ventures in hardcore islamic countries like Iran and Pakistan. But its only a strategy to counter the negative emotions of predominantly mullah population of these countries. They are still doing business and their model is being used.

I hope they stay. There were not doing so well when I went there in December. Too many window shoppers, very few real shoppers.

I go there every month for grocery ... prices are okay .. brands are good and trust me this 1st when i was there, it was JAAMM packed , I had to wait half an hour in the queue to get to a cashier and all 20 cashiers on each bottom and top floors were busy

there next store is allready planned in lahore in dha, was suppose to be in city center but work on it is stopped.

I went there 2 weeks ago and it is a very good market... and I had to wait 1 h to get to a chashier

^^Usually 1st floor counters have less rush....

If a store makes you wait one hour to give them your money, then it is poorly managed. A store makes nothing until you reach the cashier. I would never stand in line for one hour to buy anything. If they want my money, they better treat me better than that.

There is no more space in the mall, there are hardly 15-20 shops in the mall. If u compete it with other malls around the world (running by Majid Al Futaim), they are 5 times larger than this one....

Great location for a DD outlet in Lahore it'll definitely do well because there's always a lot of rush and people at Hyperstar. I just hope somehow the standard of DD in Lahore in improves , just like they upgraded here in Karachi a few years back . I visited the outlets at Liberty , The Airport , Z Block DHA and Johar Town the outlets were really really disappointing to look at infact they were depressing.
