The world's first supertall and one of the world's most recognized landmarks. I've been to the top, and the view is exceptional. This building is perfect in every way.
And it's aged quite well, too.

Jex7844 January 19th, 2010, 08:05 PM You're partly right.
Indeed the Eiffel tower could/should have been named the "Koechlin tower" as he's the one who actually designed it(drew the plans etc) ,but Maurice Koechlin is actually half french half swiss. He was born in france(Alsace) and died in Veytaux, switzerland.

In 1925, 3 of the 4 sides of the tower were covered with lights, spelling out "Citroen". The giant sign remained until 1936.

In 1934, the tower was used as a giant thermometer, with numbers and lights indicating the temperature.

The Eiffel Tower's 1st floor is to be entirely renovated in the next few months to improve the reception quality & to create new playful spaces. Three new pavilions will be created (replacing the 2 current ones), there will be a restaurant, & a glass floor will be installed which will enable people to rediscover the tower'structure imagined by Gustave Eiffel. The floor will be opaque on its periphery & then transparent towards the centre, so no worries for those suffering from vertigo :).
It will be the 3rd big transformation of the 1st floor since the construction of the tower. The first one took place in 1937 & the second one in the early 80's. The one whose works will begin in 2012 is to last 18 months & will cost 25 millions €, the equivalent of 16 months exploitation benefits.During those works, the tower will be opened as usual.

The Eiffel Tower could be transformed into the world's largest tree if a project to cover the iconic structure's 327-metre height with plants comes to fruition, Le Figaro newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Engineering group Ginger, specialised in "green" architecture, has spent two years working on the 72-million-euro (96-million-dollar) project that would see 600,000 plants attached to the tower, the French daily reported.
Architects and engineers have already built a prototype several metres tall to assess the effect of the additional 378 tonnes weight on the structure. The results of the tests are expected to be known in December.
Seedlings would then be cultivated until June next year, which would be placed on the structure until January 2013. The plants would then grow until January 2014 and be left there until their removal in July 2016.
The plants would be placed in bags of soil hanging from hemp ropes attached to the tower's steel structure.
Twelve tonnes of rubber piping would irrigate the vegetation.
The project would produce 84.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide but the plants would absorb 87.8 tonnes, rendering the plan "carbon negative".
And the project will also not replace the electric lights that have adorned the Eiffel Tower since 2002, which instead will simply shine through the leaves with a greener hue, the paper said.

Tax payers won't be sollicitated as it's a private project. It's interesting & certainly beautiful, nevertheless, I don't think that it will come true.
