The largest hotel in the world when finished in 1924, it has seen better days but come 2005, it will reopen its doors, fully restored to its 1924 original condition. This will be the hotel to stay at during the 2006 Detroit Superbowl.

How it looked in the 1920's.

Here it dwarfs the newer Best Western hotel.

Hopefully in 3 more years, I'll be able to show you a few new pics showing the beautifully restored structure.

But even now this is my second favorite building in Detroit, and it was so close to getting the wrecking ball.

I wonder what the rooms are like in the middle in such a fat building. It actuallys looks much better in the rendering. 6/10. ;)

I can see this bldg from my window. It doesn't looks so great now but imagine what people in the 20's (the 20's!!!) thought as they pulled up to stay. I can't wait for it to be done. Such a strong, stately structure. Two nights ago was the first time that I saw any lights on- the entire top floor was lit up. Very cool!

9.0/10 for me, restored or not restored. Apparently the city or company that is trying to restore, needs to put in another large sum of cash (as it was too expensive for the previous organization to develop?) or something so the work continue on it as I read in a Detroit News article. Last I checked, it was supposed to possibly become an upscale Westin hotel, but I'm not sure what's going on with that.

But on the history page of the Ferchill Group's website, it says it is becoming involved with the rehab of the Book-Cadillac. I don't know if that means anything, but it sounds like it might happen. But I'm not sure if the hotel can be opened in time for the Super Bowl.

Contrary to what you might think, the building really isn't "fat". It's actually layed out in an "L" shape, so the old hotel rooms are very small. When the renovation is completed, walls will be knocked out in order to modernize the size of the units.

Very massive looking from the front.
Now that a refurbishment plan (Westin hotel and condos) has been announced (early summer 2006), this long abandonded building may again shine on the Detroit skyline.

This thread is in serious need of some new pics. The project was delayed by couple years, but work finally started last August the hotel should reopen sometime in 2008.

Thanks for the new pictures. The contrast between the powerwashed sections and the areas with years of grime is quite noticable.
