Correction:

National Steel Corporation Guesthouse

Rising 200 feet above sea level, 5 kilometers away from the city proper. The site commands a generous view of Iligan City, which provides a glimpse of Maranao influence, set in a beautiful landscape. It has also a swimming pool, gymnasium and pelota court.

BUOTAN NGA ILIGANON
(my dad told me this is a local folk song)

I

Ang tanan nangahanaw
Sa pagsakop sa adlaw
May usa nga nagpakita

II

Sa layo may misidlak
Bulawanong kahayag
Bu-otan nga Iliganon

III

Ikaw ang Iliganon nga Bu-otan
Nagpakita ka sa imong kaanyag
Dad-a ang maayong pamatasan
Kay aron ikaw mabulahan

IV

Aron I-uban sa atong mga damgo
Gihigugma ko ikaw

Court issues order on Iligan NSC action
By Lino Dela Cruz
Iligan Correspondent

ILIGAN CITY -- The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently issued a stay order to the City Government here after the latter filed a warrant of levy on the closed National Steel Corp. (NSC) for the unpaid and delinquent real estate taxes amounting to some P2.6 billion.

The city's Task Force on Tax Collection chairman Councilor Voltaire Rovira, who earlier pushed for the issuance of the Warrant of Levy on NSC, said that this (levy) was issued to avoid the prescribed period within which the City Government must collect the unpaid and delinquent real estate taxes.

But the SEC issued the stay order on the levy on the basis that there are still obligations to consider among which are that of the creditor banks.

Rovira said the City Government will exhaust all available process to collect after it asked for reconsideration from the SEC.

"The City Government is in dire need of revenues for projects under the Special Educational Fund (SEF) and for development projects of the city's 44 barangays," he said.

He said that if these taxes are collected, at least 40 percent will go to the SEF for textbooks, infrastructures among other needs, while 20 percent will be divided among the city's 44 barangays under the "equal share" scheme of the city government for its respective development projects.

The former NSC steel plant here is now owned by the Global Steelworks.

Iligan's economy perks up
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/ilig12c.jpg

After Global Steelworks' success in stabilizing Iligan’s steel industry, Iligan city once more gains strength with a number of promising investors pouring in. The construction of the four-storey Gaisano Mall strategically located in the city’s commercial hub along the National Highway in Barangay Villaverde is underway. This rise of this big mall is expected to reawaken shoppers’ interest to patronize local establishments. Next in line is the AMS Corporation’s interest to establish a Cavendish banana plantation for its export business on a 3,000 hectare agricultural land. These developments will generate more jobs for thousands of Iliganon hopefuls. AMS Corporation belongs to the Soriano Group of Companies. Aside from job opportunities, AMS will also make possible the building of a school, church and health facilities for the farmers. The company is currently eyeing certain portions of Barangays Digkilaan and Mainit for their business expansion.

The Nature’s Park will be constructed in three phases, and is expected to be completed within three years.

Phase I will feature an orchidarium; a durian/rambutan/lanzones orchard; natural waterfalls; a bat park; a crocodile farm; a grotto in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes; a wishing well; and viewing decks along the banks of the Agus River .

Phase II, calls for the construction of an aviary; a mini-zoo; a trekking site; a hanging bridge; cottages and sheds, and a children’s island park.

Phase III involves the construction and development of special areas for kayak rides and white-water rafting; a site for rock and wall climbing; fishing grounds; cable car stations with viewing decks.

The local government of Iligan has introduced the Tourism Triangle Development Zone to focus promotional efforts in the city’s most promising areas for tourism. The Triangle comprises three barangays – Barangay Ma. Cristina (where the Maria Cristina Falls is located), Bgy. Ditukalan (the site of the National Power Corporation), and Bgy. Buroon (home to Mimbalut and Timoga Falls, and President Macapagal-Arroyo’s ancestral house).

The goal is to promote community-based tourism which entails that folks from these three barangays be oriented and trained to be tourist-friendly. For those wondering why the National Power Corporation (NPC) is included in the focus areas, industrial tours also offered by travel agencies are actually in demand for both academic and professional groups all around the country. Popular destinations for this type of tours, aside from NPC, are PILMICO – a flour mill, SMC Coconut Oil Mill, Mabuhay Vinyl, and National Steel Corporation, whose common factor are their huge, dedicated factories.

Notwithstanding, the city lacks adequate accommodation and convention facilities which limits its development into a tourism center. The city hopes to someday soon have investors who would be interested to put up large-scale hotels and convention centers in the city. This will be a big boost in the city’s tourism sector and economy in general.

The rugged and mountainous topography of Iligan City is undoubtedly one of its major advantages. It is endowed with numerous waterfalls (23 at last count),caves, springs (8),mountain peaks that could be develop into major tourist attractions. Yun nga lang the potential eco-tourism sites remain largely undeveloped due to lack of infrastructure support. IMHO kaya dinevelop ang tourism triangle.

Of the 23 waterfalls, three of them are in the Tourism Triangle namely: Maria Cristina Falls, Tinago Falls, and Mimbalut Falls.

Six MSU-IIT ECE students placed third in the 27th Electronics Engineering Inter-Scholastic Quiz show. The event was held at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City, last December 6, 2006. More than 50 academic institutions sent their brightest students for the said affair.

The team, composed of Jake Obina, Virgil Roy Ajo, Meriam Yuson, Allenn Lowaton, Neil Ivan Frondoza, and Roel Pantonial with Prof. Angiline Teatro (the new EECE Department Head) as their coach, enjoyed a comfortable lead during the first two rounds of the quiz show. But they eventually bowed to the teams from University of the Philippines – Diliman and De la Salle university, which placed first and second respectively.

They would have clinched the top award had the quiz master and judges considered their answer to the final question. Almost everyone in the audience agreed to the MSU-IIT quizzers’ answer but the team humbly accepted the judges’ decision.

This was not the first time that MSU-IIT garnered top ranks in the said national tilt. In 2004, MSU-IIT also placed third at the same national event held in Cagayan de Oro City. Indeed, the ECE students that MSU-IIT has been producing for the past years are at par with the students in other top-caliber universities in the country.

Automated polls in 12 areas OKd
By : Florante S. Solmerin | Manila Standard
14 December 2006 | 9:47 AM

THE Commission on Elections has identified at least 12 areas nationwide that would serve as pilot areas for the government’s poll automation for the May 2007 elections.

“Full automation would be implemented in two provinces and two highly urbanized cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao,” Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. told reporters during a forum yesterday (Dec. 13) held at Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan .

He said the areas were identified through Comelec’s Advisory Council following the passage of a bill by the congressional bicameral conference committee calling for poll automation.

The bill calls for P2.6-billion appropriation for the partial implementation of the automated election system.

“The areas have been identified by the poll body, with the consent of the respective sanggunian or local councils,” Abalos said.

“In Manila , we have chosen Mandaluyong [and] either Las Piñas or Marikina for the automated election system. This is complete— from voting to counting to transmission [of results]—by use of the machine,” Abalos said.

Also included in the list are Batanes and Ilocos Sur provinces in Luzon, Siquijor and Aklan provinces in the Visayas, and Misamis Oriental and Compostela Valley provinces in Mindanao . Pilot automation will also be implemented in Bacolod City in Negros Occidental in the Visayas and Iligan City, Lanao del Norte and General Santos City , South Cotabato in Mindanao.

He said the total number of votes in these areas are more than three million.

“Electronic transmission will be implemented in the whole of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao,” Abalos said.

The ARMM is composed of predominantly Muslim provinces namely Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao and Sulu.

“We have chosen Batanes as the farthest northern province and Tawi-Tawi as the farthest southern province. Cheating happens in the transmission of election results that’s why we will show to the public the importance of electronic transmission by having the farthest north and farthest south as our pilot areas,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abalos said his agency would be strictly implementing a “gun ban” policy during elections.

“Except those provided for by law, the gun ban would be strictly implemented,” he said.

He disclosed that hundreds have already applied for exemption in Metro Manila alone but as of now no application has been approved.

Abalos also announced that a month before the election proper, heads of police will be reshuffled in all localities.

“This is to dispel suspicion that incumbent local officials are conspiring with the police to advance their personal interests,” he said.

It is pleasantly surprising to note that Iligan City is blessed with picturesque countryside bordered by a seemingly infinite expanse of sea, adequate amenities, complimented by well-paved main roads, warm and hospitable people and most of all the seemingly seamless majestic waterfalls. Although it may not often be included in the most people’s list of must-see destinations in the country, its simple charms invite us to take a detour from the usual and allow us experience a refreshing change of scene.

Located on the northwestern coast of Mindanao facing Iligan bay, 795 km. South Manila, Iligan is a rare mixture of what is natural, industrial and cultural.

Iligan city Mayor Lawrence Cruz is now making moves to shift direction away from its shadow and position Iligan as a mother haven and destination for both tourists and investors. With it’s rich history, active cultural and art scenes, and it’s numerous waterfalls including the renowned Maria Cristina Falls, Iligan City can very well stand on its own.

In his vision of platform, the mayor said Iligan is a city with big dreams." and it has the will and the means to make these dreams come true."

From a small trading and farming town of several thousand inhabitants sixty years ago, it has metamorphosed into an industrial city with more than 300,000 culturally-diverse people living and working harmoniously towards their individual and the city’s well-being.

Its industrialization came about, due to its hydroelectric power plants that supply the cheapest power in the whole island of Mindanao.

Despite its industrialization, Iligan has preserved the beauty of its gifts from nature – its 23 wondrous waterfalls, its crystal-clear water springs and its pristine beaches. During its Tourism and Fiesta Celebration in September, there are numerous and unique cultural events that are must-see for domestic and foreign tourists.

maayo kay dili lang asean citizens ang gavisit sa site.

Tor
December 20th, 2006, 07:23 PM
Because the site was primarily intended for citizens of countries outside of the ASEAN region. The site hopes to provide indept information of the schools in the ASEAN region, so that when they want to inquire a particular program in a particular school in the ASEAN region, in particular... they can do it through this website that I developed. And because the scope is vast...and I'm the only one doing everything, the coverage has not expanded at the exact rate I expected. But I hope to complete the Philippine site by May of next year, and hopefully, be able start the Singapore and Malaysia site by Feb, also of next year.

There's still a lot of things to be done for this site including the plan to transfer the data to another web program for easy access. Some visitors from South Korea and from some parts of the Middle east have been complaining for the slow download of some pictures. The only solution I can think of right now is to use adobe macropage, which unfortunately, I'm not well verse to use at the moment.

I hope you guys pay my site a visit as often as you can. I will be upgrading the Student News section as often as I can. And please recommend it to your friends.

Thank you and God speed.

Coconut oil and steel power Northern Mindanao to 34% rise in third quarter
Mike Banos
December 19, 2006

Exports from Northern Mindanao during the third quarter of 2006 totaled US$ 188-million, up 34% compared to the same period last year.

Figures presented by the Department of Trade and Industry Region 10 office during the Quarterly Regional Economic Situationer (QRES) round table hosted by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region 10 last week show 96 percent of the region’s total exports were accounted for by Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte.

Lanao del Norte contributed 47.91 percent, approximately the same as Misamis Oriental’s 47.78 percent. The latter has traditionally accounted for the bulk of exports from Region 10 but Lanao del Norte’s contribution has been steadily growing due to the continued rise in cold rolled steel exports from Global Steelworks International, Inc. or GSII (formerly the National Steel Corp.) in Iligan City.

Although Camiguin’s exports rose five-fold (543.94%) due to increased demand for coconut shell charcoal, its US$ 34,000 total accounted for only a minuscule 0.02% of total regional exports. Exports from other provinces in the region all rose by double digits, led by Bukidnon with 57.58% and Lanao del Norte (48.77%), Misamis Occidental (26.18%) and Misamis Oriental (20.24%).

Bukidnon’s impressive export growth rate is attributed to increases of its agricultural products, notably sugar and sugar cane products, and fresh bananas.

Nevertheless, cold rolled steel from GSII remains the region’s top export product, accounting for 29 percent of the third quarter total with a value of US$ 54,488,615 although coconut products as a product sector continues to dominate as the region’s leading export category with US$ 65,056,963 and 34.69 percent of the total.

The profile of coconut based products from the region includes crude coconut oil (US$ 28,076,276), mostly from the Granexport Manufacturing and SMC-Agribusiness oil mills in Iligan; oleochemicals from the expanded Pilipinas Kao, Inc. plant in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental (US$15,465,506), cochin coconut oil (US$10,562,000) and dessicated coconut (US$3,741,360).

Other top export products for the quarter include canned pineapple from Del Monte (US$ 22,602,179), sintered ore for the Japanese market from Philippine Sinter Corp. (US$17,253,781), portland cement from the Holcim plant in Lugait, Misamis Oriental (US$7,189,086), raw cane sugar from Crystal Milling in Maramag, Bukidnon and Bukidnon Sugar Co. in Quezo, Bukidnon (US$5,089,074), dessicated coconut from Fiesta Brands in Medina, Misamis Oriental (US$3,741,360) and mike powder from Nestle Phils., Inc. in Cagayan de Oro (US$2,609,817).

Industrial manufactures was the fastest growing export sector for the quarter, growing by an impressive 230.51 percent to US$27,735,599 compared to the third quarter last year. This was attributed mainly to increased demand for ferrochrome high carbon manufactured at the Phidivec Industrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

Other fast growing export sectors included wood and forest products, mostly from the seven wood processing plants of the Catimco Group in Cagayan de Oro City (99.81%, US$3,739,205), iron and steel products from GSII in Iligan (90.48%, US$55,957,949), and sugar and sugar products from the two sugar mills in Bukidnon (79.64%, US$5,754,307).

On the downside, marine products dropped the most with -76.06 percent (US$502,199) mainly due to low prices in the world market, followed by gifts, toys and housewares with a -57.96% decrease also due to soft demand in the world market.
