I would like to ask permission to the members in this particular thread if it's okay to grab their photos here so I can post them on my website Iligan City Online Community (http://iligancityonline.com/). The photos grabbed in here would be posted on the site and can be seen on the photo stream. Alingatong already gave me permission to use his photos since I am trying to promote Iligan City and do not earn from them. Hope you guys will agree and visit the site. I would be very thankful if you guys agree to my request.

Fritz, You can use any of the pics I have posted here in SSC. I know you have worked very hard on your website and I certainly hope the information on it will continue to be as accurate and up to date as you have been so far.

Many things in Iligan continue to change, new places open up or come on line, some places close down and go out of business, various city projects continue to come closer to completion. Information published on the internet can change so the addition of updates or revisions to previously published information is one of the things that contributes to people comming back for more. For me, that has always been one of the most significant factors of this SSC - Iligan thread. There are so many things about Iligan that I have seen or read about First, right here on SSC.

I sincerely hope that your website becomes successful as more people find out about it.

Always something new

Things to look forward to

After 2 days of tackling issues concerning the subject of their field of interest, the group scheduled a scenic tour in the city to give them a breather.

And indeed it was one!

More than a hundred of them coming from as far as Manila and Jolo, Sulu, filled 5 jeepneys that took them to the City Hall grounds, the barter trade, Cheding's Peanuts, Mimbalot Falls and the most famous of our destinations - the NPC Nature's Park, home of the famous Maria Cristina Falls.

And as they say, a picture paints a thousand words...so let the 22 pictures (http://iligancitytourism.yolasite.com/news-update/participants-to-the-3rd-national-political-science-convention-tour-the-city-of-majestic-waterfalls-iligan-) speak for themselves!

Iligan dad supports law on anti-crime cash reward system

ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, Feb. 12 -– Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz expressed support to the law authored by City Councilor Moises Dalisay, Jr. that suggests the establishment of an Anti-Crime Cash Reward System.

It was learned from Councilor Dalisay who is Chairman of the Committee on Police, Public Safety and Order of the city council that Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz has made available an initial appropriation of P500,000.

A cash reward will be given to anyone who can give information that would result in the arrest to persons with grave offenses such as attempted, frustrated and consummated bombing, violators of anti-terrorism law, murder or homicide, robbery with homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, rape, illegal drug trafficking and others.

This will also be effective to those who can give information for less grave offenses such as robbery hold-up, snatching, physical injuries and reckless imprudence resulting to death or less physical injuries.

Councilor Dalisay believes that this will encourage public assistance in crime solving by way of giving information to police authorities.

The ordinance endorsed by Councilor Dalisay has passed second reading in the city council. (CIO/PIA10)

Merong Children's Park sa Barangay San Miguel pero di ko alam kung may skating rink. Sa pagkakaalam ko lang, maraming nagro-roller skate sa Public Plaza.

Meron ding ginawang park sa loob ng IBJT Complex. Me skating rink daw. Pero biglang natigil ang construction.

Whatever happened to this project- Construction of Children & Family Amusement Park, IBJT Northbound, Barangay Hinaplanon, Iligan City?

Inumpisahan pero di tinapos.

Is it another showcase of our local official's incompetence? Sana mali ako! :ohno:

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Feb. 15 (PIA) – The Regional Development Council of region 10 (RDC-X) will look into the real possibility, with recent indicators showing progressive trends, in capital investments and employment in the region, through the efforts and under the leadership of Pres. ILIGAN CITY Feb. 16 (PIA) -- Regional Development Council (RDC)-10 Chairperson Lawrence Ll. Cruz of Iligan presided over his first Council meeting as head of the assembly, Feb. 15, 2011 at the Maria Cristina Hotel, this city.

Cruz who assumed his post as the new RDC-Northern Mindanao chair for 2011-2013 lauded the presence of the local government unit chief executives, regional directors of line agencies, private sectors, non-government organizations, guests, tri-media, all coming from the eight (8) cities, five (5) provinces, and the local officials of the host city.

This is something that we looked forward to of hosting such event, all in the hope of improving and adheringto for the interest of Northern Mindanaons, expressed Cruz.

Cruz furhter said that he hopes to have Iligan gets its share as well as other cities and provinces, encompassing development and economic growth in our area.

Cruz presented the City Development Plan of Iligan, following thereafter updates on the resolutions passed during the 87th RDC meeting chaired by his predecessor, Camiguin Gov. Jurdin Jesus M. Romualdo.

The fiscal year 2012 regional budget preparation was endorsed by Director Leon M. Dacanay of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) in Northern Mindanao and concurrent vice-chairperson of RDC 10.

The move was to request the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to provide regional breakdown of agency budgets for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and all Local Government Units (LGUs) and concerned agencies/entities in the region to hasten the attainment of the MDGs, as well as prepare provincial scorecard to strengthen the localization efforts.

RDC Chair Cruz called on Mayor Philip T. Tan of Tangub City to read for approval of the re-instatement of RDC-10 special non-voting membership status of selected agencies, the compliance of business permits and licensing systems in cities and municipalities, the fast-tracking of submission of Comprehensive Development Plans/Local Development Investment Programs, the new RDC-10 logo design contest, and the creation of a special committee on the Laguindingan airport development project under RDC-10.

RDC-10 pushes for 2012 budget (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=7&r=r10&id=17460)
By Lorry V. Gabule

ILIGAN CITY Feb. 16 (PIA) — The Regional Development Council (RDC) in Northern Mindanao has moved to endorse its request to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to provide regional breakdown of agency budget for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

This was supported by the Council members during its 88th Full Council Meeting held on Feb. 15, 2011 at the Maria Cristina Hotel, this city, under its new chair Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of Iligan City, for 2011-2013.

The endorsement was read by RDC vice-chairperson Leon M. Dacanay, Jr., concurrent regional director of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-10, which cited also all local government units (LGUs) and concerned agencies/entities in the region to hasten the attainment of the MDGs, as well as prepare provincial scorecard to strengthen the localization efforts.

The fiscal year (FY) 2012 budget preparation would strengthen the linkage between development planning and budgeting and increases the likelihood of accomplishing development goals by considering resource availability in the formulation of the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPDP) and the Term Public Investment Program (MTPIP) for FYs 2011-2016.

Departments/agencies are encouraged to involve the civil society organizations (CSOs), private sectors and other stakeholders in the consultations on plans and strategies being considered in the 2012 budget and to secure greater feedback on how the existing national programs are affecting localities and communities.

Consistent with the government’s fiscal consolidation and debt reduction strategies, the 2012 budget will reflect the government’s strategy of expanding its revenue base and improving tax compliance, and further sharpening its sectoral and geographical expenditure focus.

On March 3, all budget proposals from the concerned agencies shall be submitted to look into recommendations for final deliberation of the Council Executive Committee, said Dacanay. (PIA 10 Lanao del Norte)

IDPP Sale to Private Firm Beneficial to the City

Iligan City, Philippines – Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz revealed in the 88th Full Council Meeting of the Regional Development Council in Iligan that the city is not capable of operating the Iligan Diesel Power Plants 1 and 2.

The chief executive said the city does not have funds to shoulder the operational expenses of the power plant.

Mayor Cruz said the city government intends to sell the IDPPs to a private company. The mayor said the city is now negotiating with Conal Holdings, a firm that is interested to buy the plant.

The mayor explained this to the Regional Development Council because the IDPP will help alleviate the power shortage in Mindanao.

It was learned that the IDPP can contribute 30 megawatts to the Mindanao Grid during power shortage. RDC anticipates the possibility that Mindanao will again experience a power shortage in the summer months.

Peace and security among business community’s priorities, says CCIFII president
By Lorry V. Gabule

ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, Feb. 18 –- Emily M. Pascua, president, Chamber of Commerce Industry Foundation of Iligan, Inc.,(CCIFII) believes that peace and order is an essential ingredient to maintaining economic development, social order and political stability.

“It is in this context that a Multi-Sectoral Dialogue on Peace and Security was conducted because we thought of seeking to assess the peace and security situation of the city, as well as orient the business community on what the local government unit (LGU) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) have been doing to maintain a peaceful environment for the city,” expressed Pascua in her welcome message at the Elena Tower Inn, this city, on Feb. 16, 2011.

Further, she said a condition of peace and order facilitates the growth of investments, generates more employment opportunities and attracts more tourists.

This is part of our advocacy in helping the city in its investment promotional activities, thus, we invited participants coming from the association of hotels and restaurants, lending institutions, non-government organizations, the Iligan City Police Office, government line agency, LGU and the business community.

After the presentation of issues and concerns from the business community, and the situational report of the PNP, the group came up with an action plan as a first step towards making the business community an active participant in maintaining peace and order in the city.

Representing Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of Iligan was the Executive Director of the Iligan Investment Promotions Center, Rolando Cuizon, who presented the city’s plans and programs on peace and security for 2011.

Pascua reiterated, “Peace and order is a vital ingredient in the growth of investments and tourism.”

It does not take an actual deterioration of the peace and order to scare off tourists and investors alike. A mere impression or suspicion of such a breakdown is enough to drive the tourists and investors away, said the lady biz icon of Iligan. (PIA 10 Lanao del Norte)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY Feb. 16 (PIA) -- Governor Oscar S. Moreno reveals that the government is now ironing out new projects to be laid on the surrounding areas of the Lauindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental.

The airport construction is set to be completed next year, prompting all key agencies in the government to start their dialogue and set everything in order.

Their hands are full of equally important matters to tackle such road widening projects, water system, energy supply, placements of hospital, telecommunications facilities and boosting tourism.

The National Economic Research and Business Action Center (NERBAC) meanwhile is considering the putting up shuttle service from the airport to the nearby cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

NERBAC is also looking into the feasibility of putting up fast craft service in the airport to provide an alternate route and drop off terminals to any parts of the region. (PIA10)

Iligan is nestled in the midst of luxuriant natural beauty of Northern Mindanao. It is a city truly blessed and nurtured by Mother Nature. It is protected from typhoons by natural barriers; its terrain is hugged by a long stretch of shoreline along the Iligan Bay.
Its mountains and lush forests hide numerous waterfalls in its embrace, earning for itself the title “City of Waterfalls.” The most famous, enchanting and the most awesome of these is the Maria Cristina Falls along the Agus River. Agus and Maria Cristina are sources of hydro electric power for most of Mindanao’s requirements. Spring like Timoga and Taytay are sources of cool and pristine water for swimming resorts that provide relief from summer heat. The coastline as well offers beaches and picnic grounds.

The rich soil, even rainfall distribution, and ideal topography provide suitable conditions for diverse agricultural ventures.

With all the natural wonders and blessing bestowed upon the city, the most prized asset of iligan is still the warm and vibrant hospitality of its people. Both natives and people of different ethnicity all come together to make iligan their home.

Dalisay to Prevent NBI Transfer (http://www.iligan.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4893&Itemid=762)
Friday, 11 February 2011
By: Melvin T. Anggot, Virgilio C.

Iligan City, Philippines - City Councilor Moises Dalisay, Jr. is exerting efforts to prevent the transfer of the National Bureau of Investigation office from Iligan to Ozamiz city.

Dalisay is trying to find out the reason of the transfer. The councilor will confer with NBI Iligan District Chief Atty. Mandaue to find a way to resolve the issue.

Dalisay will endorse a resolution to the city council to follow-up the request of the NBI for a site where their office will be located. He will also seek the assistance and permission of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz to find a suitable site.

As of this writing, the result of the talk between Dalisay and Mandaue is not yet known.

The Committee on Transportation and Traffic Management of the city council under by Councilor Providencio “Bong” Abragan, Jr. expressed the desire that offices involved in traffic would pool their resources for the efficient management of traffic in the city.

^^ If our city officials will not be able to stop this move, it would be a conclusive proof of their incompetence:bash:

They should prevent the transfer

SMC CHRM Students joins Chefs on Parade 2011
SMC Website (http://www.smciligan.edu.ph/index.php?option=news&task=view&id=73&slug=SMC-CHRM-Students-joins-Chefs-on-Parade-2011)
Earl Christian C. Yano

Chef’s on Parade, the Philippines’ longest running culinary competition presents professional and amateur chefs from the Philippines and all over Asia whipping up recipes and concocting delicious creations and was a chance that we SMC CHRM students didn’t want to miss.

Way before cooking tournaments became popular on television; our country already had its own contest among chefs. The first Chef’s on Parade was organized in 1974 in Bacolod. It continuously ran from 1979 to 1988 and from 2000 to 2004. Since the food industry boomed and the interest in culinary courses was heightened in the country, the hotel and Restaurant Association of the Philippines (HRAP) have urged to revive the contest.

From February 10-12, 2011, the exciting gastronomic occasion also gathered thousands of students from all over the Philippines and the rest of Asia. Fortunately, with the blessings endowed by the school and the student’s parents, we were able to not just witness but experience the fun-learning workshops during the event. The three-day festival included live competitions, tastings, celebrity chef appearances that showcased the skills and talents of globally competitive culinary experts and the products and services of the hotel and restaurant industry in the Philippines.

The moment we arrived in Kabayan Hotel, the place we stayed-in, we immediately went to the event venue at the SMX Convention Center. Words cannot express what we felt seeing dazzling array or live face off competitions between chefs and the much-awaited Asian Market Basket; Food tasting anywhere you go, Barista and Bartenders all over the place, displays of Chocolates and Pastry showpieces and different cuisines were just some of the few splendid exhilarating things that we encountered. The 2nd and the 3rd day were the peak of the festival, showcasing the Ultimate Chef Showdown, Flair tending, Wide display of Table Setting / Menu Card or Folder, Wedding Cake designing, Creative Cake Decorating on the spot, Culinary Trivia and lots of Workshops.

After every workshop we attended, we didn’t waste time going to fancy boutiques in the SM Mall of Asia but instead, we roamed around SMX and observed the live competitions as well as interacting with famous chefs and top students of famous schools in the country. We were so fortunate to meet and talk with Alex Dino, a New York-based Filipino chef who recently won Grand Champion in the Sears chef Challenge that saw 24 chefs from all over USA. “It’s very overwhelming to hear that you guys came all the way from Mindanao just to join Chef’s on Parade” he said. He was so accommodating knowing his busy atmosphere and a coming show minutes after we took pictures with him. Students from De Lasalle College of St. Benilde and Lyceum of the Philippine University also entertained us about their school and how glad they were to know that we joined Chef’s on Parade.

After the Chef’s on Parade we savored a few moments stopping by at Manila Ocean Park to take pleasure in seeing wild marine creatures. The scene was spectacular, personally saying, that was the best Oceanarium I have even been into. A lot of species I didn’t expect existed in this world and what they are capable of.la salle

As much as we would like to extend our Tour in Manila, we have to bid farewell and cherish all the educational memories we have stored and that we can hopefully share it to our HRM students in St. Michael’s College. Our stay was indeed an added milestone that a would-be chef like us would ever dream of.

MSU-IIT (http://www.msuiit.edu.ph/news/news-detail.php?id=218)

College of Arts and Social Sciences Professor and IPAG Director Steven Patrick C. Fernandez read a paper and moderated a panel discussion in the 3rd Philippine International Writers Festival in Davao City.

Dubbed Taboan (Cebuano meaning “meeting place”), the festival gathered eighty of the most distinguished Philippine writers and guests from abroad including National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera who delivered the keynote address.

Fernandez lectured on “Transcreation” and moderated the panel on “Spirits of the Place: Local Myths and Folklore and Literature.”

Writers read from their works and shared ideas in this flagship program of the National Committee on Literary Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. The event which featured the theme “Traditions and the New” is a component of the 2011 Philippine International Arts Festival.

This festival cum conference -- whose list of attendees read like a Who’s Who in Philippine Letters -- was held Feburay 10-12 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel and in various universities in Davao City.

Tibo conferred the “Francisco Demetrio Award”
MSU-IIT Website (http://www.msuiit.edu.ph/news/news-detail.php?id=217)

The Board of Trustees of Xavier University has conferred on Prof. Steven Patrick C. Fernandez, DFA, the Francisco Demetrio Award.

In his letter informing Fernandez of the award, Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin, SJ, XU President, wrote that the award is given those who have made “significant strides in enriching Philippine culture and the arts, especially in Mindanao.”

Fernandez, Professor of Literature and the Humanities in the College of Arts and Social Sciences, is Artistic Director-Founder of the world-recognized Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG), resident cultural company of the MSU-IIT.

The award is named after the distinguished Dr. Francisco Demetrio, SJ, a pillar of scholarship in Philippine Studies, who authored tomes of works on folklore, Anthropology, and culture, in general. A portion of the Xavier U Museum has been dedicated to his works and memory.

The Demetrio award comes at the heels of another award, The Global Pinoy, which the SM Group of Companies conferred on him last September, 2010.

As awardee, Fernandez will address the graduates of Xavier U during their ceremonies on March 25 during which time the university will also confer the award.

The National Science Consortium
STAR SCIENCE By Caesar Saloma, PhD (Philippine Star (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=658044&publicationSubCategoryId=75))

The National Science Consortium was organized in 2009 by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in line with its Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP). Its aim is to enhance the capability of the Philippine higher education system to produce technically competent PhD and MS graduates by providing ample graduate scholarships to promising Filipino scientists and researchers, and by promoting resource sharing and information exchange through collaborative academic and research activities among Philippine universities with established PhD programs in the basic and applied sciences and mathematics, including forestry and agriculture, animal science, fisheries and public health. The current school year, SY 2010 — 2011, is the first year of implementation of the Consortium.

The Consortium was initiated during the term of Secretary Estrella Alabastro and implemented today with the full support of current DOST Secretary Mario Montejo. It presently consists of 10 colleges and schools from seven Philippine universities, namely University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, Central Luzon State University, Visayas State University and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology. The Science Education Institute (SEI) of the DOST found that only seven universities in the country have established PhD degree programs in the basic and applied sciences and mathematics. The four Consortium colleges from UP are based in UP Diliman, UP Los Baños, UP Manila and UP Visayas.

Available CHED records reveal that in 2009, the Philippine higher education system was made up of 1,758 universities and colleges, of which more than 88 percent were privately owned. Thirty-nine percent (1.081 million) of all undergraduates were enrolled in 190 state and local government-supported universities and colleges during SY 2009-2010. In SY 2004-2005, less than 10 percent of faculty members had PhD degrees implying that only a few institutions of higher learning are capable of offering viable (advanced) graduate programs particularly in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.

The Consortium is managed by the Steering Council that is composed of the deans of the 10 member colleges together with the DOST-SEI executive director. The Council serves as a policy-making body that also closely monitors and evaluates the performance of the Consortium program. In October 2010, a total of 764 full-time PhD faculty members worked for the Consortium with the UPLB Graduate School and the UP Diliman College of Science employing the largest numbers at 244 and 147, respectively.

Before the Consortium was organized, the chosen colleges produced an average total of 74.7 PhD and 247.4 MS graduates per school year with UPLB Graduate School and the UP Diliman College of Science producing 97 and 48 MS graduates, respectively. The formation of the Consortium is expected to increase collective production to around 250 PhD and 350 MS graduates per year by creating an enabling environment wherein a PhD faculty member is able to graduate successfully one PhD and one MS student every three and two years, respectively.

The Consortium is the third advanced manpower development program formed by the DOST in partnership with selected Philippine universities in the last thirty years. In the mid-1980s, the UP-Ateneo-De La Salle PhD Consortium was organized for the breeder sciences, followed by the World Bank-funded Engineering and Science Education Program (ESEP) in the 1990s that included the acquisition of research equipment and facilities. Both programs produced a number of PhD graduates who are now holding key academic, research and administrative positions in local universities and research centers.

The National Science Consortium is established to address the persistent lack of Filipino scientists and researchers who would enable our country to compete economically with its neighbors and generate prosperity for its rapidly increasing population. According to the UNESCO Science Report 2010, the researcher population density of the Philippines (with one per 12,345 population in 2009) is incontestably lower than those of Singapore (one per 164), Thailand (one per 3,215), Indonesia (one per 6,172) and Vietnam (one per 8,695).

The demographics of the PhD faculty members who are presently serving in the Consortium are also a cause of great concern. More than 55 percent of them are 51 years old and above, which means that our current and already limited national capability to train the next generation of scientists and researchers will be critically diminished toward the end of 2025 if our scientific enterprise system is unable to replace those who are retiring from service. In the UPLB Graduate School, almost 69 percent of PhD faculty members are at least 51 years of age. The demographics in other Consortium schools do not also fare any much better. The desirable age distribution is one in which there are more young assistant professors than associate professors who would also outnumber the senior full professors. A graduate student needs to earn his or her PhD degree before the age of 30 to have a better chance of contributing something significantly new to the body of scientific knowledge during his productive professional life.

The Consortium awarded a total of new 69 PhD and 322 MS scholarships in SY 2010-2011. This is in addition to the 212 PhD and 868 MS scholarships that were already allocated under ASTHRDP in the previous years before the Consortium was put into place. The more difficult challenge is to graduate these scholars in due time.

Human capital is the equivalent economic value that is placed on the skills and know-how of the available labor force. Together with stable rule of law, human capital plays a vital role in achieving national prosperity especially in a knowledge-based global economy. Despite the fact that it has no natural resources, Singapore became the richest country in the ASEAN due to its highly successful ability to generate and utilize intangible human capital.

PeaceTech Connects Iligan City and Manila for Peace
PeaceTech (http://www.peacetech.net/about/blog/2011/02/16/peacetech-connects-iligan-city-and-manila-for-peace/)

Iligan City and Manila become one as they talk about prejudice and discrimination and how they can use the power of technology to promote understanding through PeaceTech’s Mass Video Conference series. For four hours more than 5,000 people from Manila and Iligan City engage in dialogue and experiential learning through th e stories of Prof. Jane Asperin and Prof. Jamail Kalian. Atom Araullo serves as host for the Manila event while Baicon Macaraya hosts Iligan City.

The two sides were linked up through a 4 meg dedicated line and viewed through 17×20 feet screens. Representatives from Manila include students and their teachers from La Salle Taft, La Salle CSB, Ateneo, PLM, PLU, FEU, Araullo, Lakandula, Esteban Abada, and FEU-Fern. They met students live from Mindanao State University IIT, Iligan Capitol College, Iligan City East High School, Tomas Cabili and other schools within the area.

http://www.peacetech.net/about/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/PeaceTech-MVC2-Manila-by-PUP-17.jpg

“The most important element about the Mass Videoconference is that it gives people of different backgrounds and religions the opportunity to come together across large distances. This is the power of technology. For the first time, human kind can increasingly reach out to the other side and find out for themselves that what they are being told about the “other” may not be necessarily true,” says Robin Pettyfer, PeaceTech Founder.

PeaceTech’s Mass Video Conference was divided into various parts and these three major parts includes “The Problem”, “The Solution”, and “The Follow”. The Problem presents stories about prejudice and discrimination and what happened, while The Solution deals with how the guests overcome them. After discussion both the problems and the solution, “The Follow” deals with how the participants can continue with what they have learned. The major continuation is through the PeaceTech website at www.peacetech.net and utilizing its full power including sharing of multimedia, videos, photos and the online forum.

The event is also heavy on audience participation. Atom and Baicon asks varying questions from both sides and giving them the chance to share their ideas. There are also two small group discussions where the participants share their experiences about discrimination and then how they can improve understanding between young Muslims and non-Muslims in the Philippines.

http://www.peacetech.net/about/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/PeaceTech-MVC2-Iligan-4.jpg

Aside from the participants, PeaceTech also empowers young students by training them as facilitators. Each facilitator is trained in basic peace education and given facilitation skills. There are about 200 facilitators in the event with each one facilitating a group of 10 participants.

Robin Pettyfer and the PeaceTech team are enthusiastic that this will eventually be mainstreamed in the Philippines through the Department of Education specifically the Classroom Video Conference. The Classroom Video Conference (CVC) is similar in nature but instead it links students from two different classes from Manila and Mindanao.

The next Mass Video Conference will be on March 1, 2011 and will connect Manila and General Santos City in Mindanao. The venue for Manila will again be at the gymnasium of PUP Sta. Mesa.

“We have the technology. So let’s now use it!” concluded Robin Pettyfer of PeaceTech.

CPOC bares peace, security initiatives for 2011
PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=7&r=r10&id=18360)
By Lorry V. Gabule

ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, Feb. 22 -— Peace and order is not just a responsibility of the city government nor the police and the military alone, but this is everybody’s concern.

This was the message of City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz read by Executive Director Rolly Cuizon of the Iligan Investment Promotions Center, in a multi-sectoral dialogue on peace and security held at the Elena Tower Inn, this city.

Cuizon, representing Mayor Cruz, presented the local government unit’s security measures which was approved during the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) meeting held at the Sangguniang Panglunsod (SP) hall.

Its plans and programs contained the following: that the barangays shall be empowered to help promote peace and order in Iligan through the crafting of a Barangay Public Safety Plan; and to undergo a capability building which will start on the 2nd quarter this year.

Two SP Resolutions were approved authored by City Councilor Moises G. Dalisay, Jr. chairman, Committee on Police, Public Safety & Order, Good Government & Ethics, one of which is Iligan City to seek for transfer of Iligan City from the area of jurisdiction of the 1st Infantry Division, Philippine Army (PA) whose headquarters is in Polacan, Pagadian City, to the 4th Infantry Division (ID,PA) in Cagayan de Oro City. The city is offering a piece of land to become the headquarters of the 4th ID.

And its request for more patrol cars, communication equipment, and increased number of police personnel which is already at the office of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo. Iligan has been promised to have an allocation of 35 new police officers.

Another SP Resolution deliberated on Jan. 17, 2011, authored by City Councilor Marlene L. Young, committee chair on Civil, Political, Human Rights and Responsibilities, which calls for the creation of Task Force Depensa Iligan, where a budget of P4.564 million will be allocated for the purchase of high lumen flashlights, assignment of 50 CAFGU(Citizens Armed Force Geographical Unit) personnel, enhancement of Close-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera operation, purchase of six (6) K-9 dogs, and fuel for mobile patrols.

Additional cash incentive of P1,000.00 and supply of one (1) sack of rice per quarter has been approved for the Iligan City police force.

The local government of Iligan aims to maintain its image with peace-loving constituents, living in a peaceful place, disclosed Cuizon. (PIA10 Lanao del Norte)

yes. only thing is that will entail a big investment, not to mention the diggings that are going to take place all over the city.

the new City gov offices were supposed to be built there, but the idea was scrapped because that area acts as a catch basin during heavy rains. it is silty and muddy.:ohno:
if they build anything in that area, they'll have to elevate the structure. that means the surrounding areas will become the catch basin. it's a no-win situation unless they DRASTICALLY improve the city's drainage, and punish those who throw garbage into open canals and drainage systems.

I know L&L is Gaisano's warehouse. shouldn't they be mandated to improve its exterior?
and Premier. shouldn't that be demolished already, and give way to a new commercial building?
guys, what do you think should be done about these 2? :cheers2:

^^Maybe the old structures have so much history which might remind the owners of what used to be there. The reason why it's hard for them to tear down the structures and build new ones or if not sell the lot to interested investors. :ohno:

Congrats on Thread 31 and it is starting out with a lot of great pics ! At times it seems I can see more detail of things in Iligan from many of the pics posted here on SSC-Iligan, than I can when I am there in person.

@Lingaw, I find that pic of the street scene showing the Premier Theater quite interesting. I'd like to take a look at it on my next visit as I do not recall being on that street with the utility poles in the middle of the street although I was in the vicinity of the Monument ( also pictured ) when I hired a Tricicad for a few hours on the last visit.

ALthough it is most likely not financially feasable, It may be nice if the old theater could be restored to its former glory someday. From the little I see on the pic it looks like it may be something from the 1950's or 1960's and I wonder if any of the original interior is still on the inside. I would like to take a look in that area on a future visit.

With the continuation of pics posted here in SSC-Iligan I am beginning to think there may never be an end of things that interest me to see in Iligan City. You never know what may attract someones attention in viewing these pics ! Thanks to Mr. A, Mr. G and all of those that keep posting the fantastic Pics of Iligan.

I think the ludo bldg will be the future Iligan Station for the upcoming MRT based on the report of the prosposed MRT that there will be at station in the Iligan Pier area. Maybe thats the reason they did not renovated or even demolished that structure including that premier theater.

I can not recall ever having any problem finding a taxi when visiting Iligan City in and around the city proper. In high traffic areas such as The Mall, you will find them lined up near the main entrance. Hailing a Taxi from curbside has seldom taken me more than 5 minutes or so, and yes I have timed it. If you are staying at a hotel or pension house I am sure the front desk will be more than happy to call a cab for you to pick you up at your hotel.

Flat rate for anywhere in the City Proper is 70 Peso ( 60 + 10 ) as of my last visit a few months ago. With todays current events happening in the middle eastern countries fluctuations could be possible in the cost of gasoline and public transportation just about anywhere in the world.

As a foriegn visitor to Iligan, I am very happy to say that I have never felt that I was ever " ripped-off " by any of the taxis in Iligan City or its neighboring city Cagayan De Oro.

SP members inspect CMRF project status

ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, Feb. 21 -- The Sangguniang Panlungsod, this city, had its regular session recently at the Administration Building of the Central Materials Recovery and Composing Facility at Sitio Bangko, Barangay Bonbonon.

This was done to enable lawmakers to observe the actual status of the project and to check on the financial component.

City Councilor Chonilo Ruiz presented the development of the project from its concept until the accomplishments were achieved to date.

After the presentation of Ruiz, the members of the city council asked from the Project Management Office of the Iligan City Solid Waste Management Project contract of the contractor, Development Bank of the Philippines and program of works of the project.

This will enable members of the city council to closely scrutinize and to fully understand the project. (CIO/PIA10)

Iligan City, Philippines -Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz expressed his dismay on the Supreme Court for reversing its decision for the fourth time favoring the conversion of 16 municipalities to city.

In the flag raising program at city hall yesterday, Mayor Cruz said he is worried that this move will result into a decrease in the internal revenue allotment (IRA) share of Iligan in favor of the new cities.

Mayor Cruz said he will actively participate in the plans of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) in the filing of another motion for reconsideration for the Supreme Court to reverse its decision.

After the flag raising program at city hall, Mayor Cruz left immediately for Manila to attend a meeting of the LCP.

The mayor said he was designated as spokesman for city mayors of Mindanao by LCP President Oscar Rodriguez on the issue.

The League of Cities of the Philippines opposed the creation of new cities because these municipalities are not qualified on the basis of land area, population and annual income as mandated by the Local Government Code.

The city council set aside its deliberation of the letter-request of FDLO until they get the opinion of Mayor Cruz on the matter.

City Councilor Providencio “Bong” Abragan, Jr. of the Committee on Labor and Employment has plans to conduct a public hearing to get details from the FDLO on the request to determine the exact amount of funding that is needed. Public Hearing on Law that Punishes Parents for the Crime Committed by Children set on February 23

Iligan City, Philippines – City Councilor Moises Dalisay, Jr. will conduct a public hearing on an ordinance he crafted that will hold parents liable for the crimes committed by minors.

The public hearing will be conducted on February 23 at 9:00 a.m. at the Sangguniang Panlungsod session hall.

Councilor Dalisay aims at crafting an ordinance that is in consonance with Chapter 4 of Presidential Decree No. 603 or the Child and Youth Welfare Code that provides punishment to irresponsible parents.

Councilor Dalisay said he is dismayed over the effect of Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act that does not impose punishment for minors that commit crimes.

I took Super5's Higer bus on my way to Iligan yesterday. It was cool, nice, and comfy. Then I had lunch in Gaisano Mall Iligan. The first thing that I noticed was the mall's sensor automatic door... cool. After lunch, I proceeded to Lyceum College for my lecture. I was welcomed by the very active and attentive aspiring nurses. I ended my class at six and had to rush to the bus terminal going back to CdeO. I took Rural Transit's King Long. I've noticed that it's cheaper (P80.00) compared to Super5(P145.00). It was a long trip but thanks God I arrived at CdeO safe and sound. I then went straight to XE to join my family.

It's nice to see Iligan again. It has been years that I haven't seen the city of majestic waterfalls. And I must say that it is much livelier and more progressive. PADAYON ILIGAN CITY!

BMEG Llamados and Powerade Tigers set to battle in Lanao Norte

http://www.lanaodelnorte.gov.ph/images/stories/bmegvstigers.jpg
BMEG Derby Ace star player James Yap is interviewed by the local media during his team’s courtesy call with Governor Khalid Dimaporo. BMEG Llamados and Powerade Tigers is set to clash on February 26 at the MCC gym, Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

Tubod, Lanao del Norte – After their devastating loss to the Alaska Aces in the opening game last February 23 at Cuneta Astrodome, the Tigers are setting their eyes on the BMEG Llamados to get on the winning board as both are set to clash on February 26 at the Mindanao Civic Center gym, Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

The two teams are hungry for a win after both suffered losses in their season opener in the on-going PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

This is the first provincial game of the import-laden tournament which started last February 18.The 2011 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner's Cup, is the second conference of the 2010-11 PBA season.

“Lanao del Norte is the home of PBA here in Mindanao. People here are fanatics of basketball and they go wild whenever PBA plays here”, BMEG Derby Ace guard James Yap expressed.

Lanao del Norte has been the regular host of PBA games here in northern Mindanao.

“This year, the PBA has committed to try to have three games here in the province. I’m very happy with the two powerhouse teams that will play tomorrow. I’m sure the game will be exciting to watch”, Governor Khalid Dimaporo said.

Crowd-favorite BMEG Derby Ace Llamados will try to improve from its fourth place finish in the last Philippine Cup. On the other hand, Powerade Tigers will get their chance at redemption and better their ninth place finish.

“We have a good chance of winning this game. We have a very strong import and he’s blending well with the team”, BMEG coach Jorge Gallent said.

The upcoming hardcourt battle will determine who is the more hungry team. And with both teams going full-throttle to get their first win, the residents of Lanao del Norte and nearby cities are expecting another exciting PBA game here in the province.

With 2 more PBA games slated to be played in the sprawling Mindanao Civic Center, this fast-growing province is becoming the favorite sporting destination here in Mindanao. VNL/PIO-LDN

[QUOTE=Fraulein;73152381]Hi!

It's my first post to this thread... :)

Just want to ask if there were any tourist spot to visit aside from the majestic waterfalls such as Maria Cristina? Is there any taxis there aside from jeepneys, muticabs or tricicad?
