I took Super5's Higer bus on my way to Iligan yesterday. It was cool, nice, and comfy. Then I had lunch in Gaisano Mall Iligan. The first thing that I noticed was the mall's sensor automatic door... cool. After lunch, I proceeded to Lyceum College for my lecture. I was welcomed by the very active and attentive aspiring nurses. I ended my class at six and had to rush to the bus terminal going back to CdeO. I took Rural Transit's King Long. I've noticed that it's cheaper (P80.00) compared to Super5(P145.00). It was a long trip but thanks God I arrived at CdeO safe and sound. I then went straight to XE to join my family.

It's nice to see Iligan again. It has been years that I haven't seen the city of majestic waterfalls. And I must say that it is much livelier and more progressive. PADAYON ILIGAN CITY!

Yep. Iligan and Cagayan de Oro will soon to become the most dynamic cities in Mindanao and of the whole Philippines.

The same experienced in speaking of bus fare, when I went to CdeO last time, I took Rural Transit's King Long and I pay only P115 of its ticket stamped P145. When I asked also the Super 5 fare I found out that it was too higher compare to rural transit. But in fairness I like the Super 5 Higer unique and design sa bus.

karaang diskarte na sa RTMI,it's their way of bullying smaller companies to drive them out of the race and make them monopolize the market.sadly even the regulating body is buying those crap.remember sometime in 2006/2007 when Super 5 was on the verge of collapse and had to ditch their fare up to 25PHp for the IGN-CGY route?? RTMI had a 50PHp fare that time.and before a Super 5 bus unit could enter CGY,they'd be held by LTO/LTFRB people for not giving the right fare matrix...that was the time when their was a call from an Iliganon to support Super 5 which is an Iligan-based company and save it from bankruptcy.it was an exodus,Iliganon did showed some support, was one of them actually.and it paid well,Super 5 is still alive and fighting...yet now,RTMI is doing it again, trying to lower their fare way down the matrix but no sign of LTO/LTFRB intervention????who's feeding who???:ohno:

Pipe Laying Activities for the Giant Water Project to start next week
Source (http://www.iligan.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4949&Itemid=762)

Iligan City, Philippines – R. D. Policarpio-Allado-Jejor’s Joint Venture is preparing to lay out pipes from the intake dam at Sitio Abaga to the different parts of the city.

This was learned from Engr. Merlito Catolico, Manager of the Project Implementation Unit of the 495 Million Peso Water Expansion Project under the administration of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz in the press conference at city hall last Friday, February 25.

Catolico said based on the work schedule of the contractor, the pipe laying activities will start next week.

Jejor’s Construction will focus on the Abaga and Tominobo area while the Allado Construction will concentrate from Tubod to the city and R.D. Policarpio will work on Hinaplanon to Dalipuga area.

PIU said the flow of traffic will be disturbed because of the pipe laying work.

Catolico added that about 90% of work in the repair of old pipe line on the Ditucalan source has been completed while work on the intake dam at Abaca source is 100% complete. What it lacks is the perimeter fence.

Workshop, summit for Mindanao writers set
Source (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/lifestyle/workshop-summit-mindanao-writers-set)

WRITERS from around Mindanao are invited to join a planning workshop on March 19 to 20, 2011 at the Capitol University AVR located in Corrales Extension, this city.

Dr. Christine F. Godinez-Ortega, convenor and vice head of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)-Literary Arts Committee, said that in a meeting with the CDO Writers Bloc with SEA Write Awardee and novelist Antonio Reyes Enriquez on February 20 in Cagayan de Oro, they agreed to hold a planning workshop to plan their activities for the next five years such as trainings or local writers workshops, literary forums and literary readings and book launches in various schools around Mindanao.

The workshop, which would be the First Mindanao Writers Summit, also hopes to strengthen the network of Mindanao writers and help writers groups register with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and have these groups accredited with the NCCA.

The activity also aims to launch the online publication for southern writers and to plan a textbook on Philippine literature highlighting Mindanao writers as per memo from the Commission on Higher Education.

Godinez-Ortega said writers writing in various languages from the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Marawi, Iligan, Malaybalay, Valencia, Gingoog, Butuan, Surigao, Cotabato, General Santos, Pagadian, Dipolog, Zamboanga and Davao are welcome to attend this planning workshop.

“Writers from the Visayas are also welcome to attend the summit,” she said.

Those interested to join are encouraged to bring their group’s vision, mission, objectives, outline of problems in membership and other issues like publication outlets, trainings; sample Philippine literature textbook and an outline of their evaluation as well as their books, magazines, etc. for display during the summit.

“Except for the free use of venue at the Capitol University, this planning workshop has no sponsors. But we are trying to get sponsors for the hotel accommodations of out-of-town participants. Writer-participants should ask for sponsorships from their schools or writers groups for their travel funds and board and lodging while in Cagayan de Oro. Please remember that attendance to this planning workshop is but a small sacrifice for the development and promotion of Mindanaoan writing,” Godinez-Ortega said.

Interested to join may contact Leda Gonzales or Ofelia Taneo at the MSU-IIT OVCRE through (063) 2232343; Jayson Parba of CU at 0917-7270583 ; Raul Moldez at the Cagayan de Oro City Hall through 0926-4830646; Mar Geocallo of Linamon, Lanao del Norte at 0926-9110973; Bart Savior of Xavier University at 0905-3034377; Amy Bojo of Bukidnon through 0917-3997732; and Ben Halili of ADZU at 0916-7583652.

Drug agency welcomes new ‘buster’
Source (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/local-news/drug-agency-welcomes-new-buster)

THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-Northern Mindanao welcomed the return of Rene Macaling Orbe as deputy director general for administration in central office.

PDEA-10 regional director Edwin F. Layese said Orbe’s expertise and experience in drug busting “are big help to PDEA.”

“It’s my honor and pleasure working with him for a better PDEA and drug free Philippines,” he added in an interview.

President Benigno Aquino III recently picked Orbe to hold the second highest post in the agency, reports said Thursday.

Orbe headed the regional anti-drug enforcement department here from 2003-2006 and had “significant accomplishments.”

He was able to dismantle three big “shabu” laboratories and arrested three chemists in Northern Mindanao who are all Chinese nationals. One of the chemists was sentenced to life imprisonment and was fined P10 million, reports said.

Orbe, a native of Iligan City, was also able to neutralize drug groups; seized and destroyed drugs, chemicals, precursors and equipment in the manufacture of shabu; caused the arrest of another two Chinese nationals and a local Chinese, who serves as contact in the manufacture of shabu in Northern Mindanao, reports added.

He filed several cases against said foreigners that resulted to the suspects’ conviction ranging from Reclusion Perpetua to Prision Mayor and payment of damages.

Orbe, a retired lieutenant coronel of the PNP, was also assigned at the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (Armm), the most sensitive region of PDEA where he likewise performed significantly, reports added. (LSM)

**************************************

by the way, Super 5 should also not markup their price that much just because they have new beautiful buses, They should also compete in the market. Although Iliganons, are willing to support, but with the economy today, people with low income to middle class earners, will go for the lower fare. Actually wa man ta giilad sa Rural, they are just doing the marketing competition for their business to survive. And Super 5, should come up with another marketing strategy to compete and not just relying with the support of the people.

DA revives 12 watersheds in Mindanao
Wednesday, 02 March 2011
by: Marvyn N. Benaning
Manila Bulletin (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/306914/da-revives-12-watersheds-mindanao)

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is rehabilitating major watersheds in six regions of Mindanao.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala said the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) will take the lead in implementing the projects meant to salvage the deteriorating natural resources of Mindanao.

MRDP director Lealyn A. Ramos said her unit is keen in restoring the integrity of the watersheds since it is needed to raise food production and thus reduce the level of poverty in the countryside of Mindanao.

“Watershed sustains life form of plants, animals and human. And aside from providing water, it’s also the source of fiber, food, medicine and livelihoods but most of our watersheds are exploited beyond their capacity,” Ramos added.

The watersheds undergoing rehabilitation are the following: RT Lim and Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay in Region 9; Linamon, Lanao del Norte and Sogbongcogon, Misamis Oriental in Region 10; Don Marcelino, Davao del Sur and San Isidro, Davao Oriental in Region 11; Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat and Malapatan, Sarangani Province in Region 12; Nasipit, Agusan del Norte and Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte in Caraga Region, and; Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao and Kapatagan, Lanao del Sur in Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Work on a dozen other watersheds would start this year, Ramos added.

“The sites were selected based certain criteria but most especially the interconnectivity of the upland, the lowland and the coastal areas,” Ramos said.

Philippines Football Federation National Championship Starts in March
AFF (http://www.aseanfootball.org/?p=4242&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter)

After a five-year hiatus, the Philippines Football Federation (PFF) will finally organise their first official league – the Smart National Clubs Championship in March. Cyril Dofitas, the head of the PFF Competitions Department said that the competition “revives a national tournament that we have not had in a while.”

The last nationwide competition was the National Men’s Open Tournament held in Bacolod City five years ago under the presidency of Juan Miguel Romualdez although plans for a similar competition under previous PFF president Jose Mari Martinez – who succeeded Romualdez – did not push through for a variety of reasons.

“We can thank the new PFF leadership and also the great support Philippines football is now getting not just from Filipinos but also from other countries from all over the world,” said Dofitas.

The tournament, sponsored by telecommunications giant Smart, will kick off with the Provincial Qualifying Rounds this month as Member Associations (MAs) organize their own tournaments to determine their representative to the group stage.

Then, the single-round robin competition takes place from 1-16 April when football associations battle it out in the cluster qualifying rounds with one club to represent one MA only.

North, south and central Luzon: Baguio City, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, and Tarlac.

Southeast Luzon: Camarines Norte, Naga City-Camarines Sur, Legazpi City-Albay, Masbate and Oriental Mindoro.

North Mindanao: Butuan-Agusan del Norte, Bukidnon, Iligan-Lanao del Norte, Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental and Surigao del Norte.

South Mindanao: Agusan del Sur, Compostela Valley, Davao, and Davao del Norte.

Central Mindanao: Maguindanao-Cotobato City, North Cotobato, South Cotobato, and Sultan Kudarat.

West Mindanao: Misamis Oriental-Ozamiz, Zamboanga, Zamboanga del Norte-Dipolog, and Zamboanga del Sur-Pagadian.

Then from April 1-30, clubs from the Visayas region (Cebu, Iloilo, Leyte, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental) and the National Capital Region will compete immediately in the Regional Qualifying Rounds while waiting for the winners of the Luzon and Mindanao clusters.

The top four teams from the Luzon Cluster Qualifying Round, the top team from each of the Mindanao group clusters, and the top two club teams from NCR, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao winners will advance to the finals which will be played in Manila from 6-25 June.

“Right now we are looking to hold the finals in either the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium or the University of Makati,” clarified Dofitas.

Clubs may line up to five foreign players but only four can play on the field at any given time.

langyaw: "the new City gov offices were supposed to be built there, but the idea was scrapped because that area acts as a catch basin during heavy rains. it is silty and muddy.
if they build anything in that area, they'll have to elevate the structure. that means the surrounding areas will become the catch basin. it's a no-win situation unless they DRASTICALLY improve the city's drainage, and punish those who throw garbage into open canals and drainage systems.
Iligan City is a coastal city. only land-locked cities are supposed to get flooded."

Initial Steps for Convention Center Project Started

Former Councilor Orlando Maglinao said the efforts for the construction of the proposed Convention Center in the 4-hectare site located in the middle of Bagong Silang, Pala-o and Del Carmen is under way.

During the City Development Council meeting yesterday, Maglinao said this was started last January 17 with the dredging of the Baslayan Creek near the site of the Convention Center to prevent flooding of the area.

He said a group is now surveying the boundaries of the site and has started informing affected residents in the proposed project. A group that will conduct soil testing from Manila is expected to be in Iligan next week.

From the 29% development fund approved by CDC yesterday, Mayor Cruz has allocated P10 million to fund the initial activities for the project.

CDC Endorses Development Projects of Mayor Cruz

The City Development Council passed three resolutions endorsing the development projects of Iligan City.

In the meeting yesterday at Maria Cristina Hotel, the group supported the so-called Four Modular Infrastructure Projects of the City for 2011 and 2012. This includes the world-class Convention Center and three supporting projects like the drainage system to include Baslayan Creek, road network, and a modernized Pala-o Market.

The second resolution recommended to the Department of Public Works and Highways and the office of Congressman Vicente “Varf” Belmonte, Jr. the inclusion the construction of the Tambacan-Mahayahay Bridge.

The third resolution supported the projects to improve traffic in the city.

by the way, Super 5 should also not markup their price that much just because they have new beautiful buses, They should also compete in the market. Although Iliganons, are willing to support, but with the economy today, people with low income to middle class earners, will go for the lower fare. Actually wa man ta giilad sa Rural, they are just doing the marketing competition for their business to survive. And Super 5, should come up with another marketing strategy to compete and not just relying with the support of the people.

well RTMI has grown up so big that if you get near them it would just be their nails you get in touch with and not the whole thing.the point is big stuff bullies smaller ones,a usual logic.back in mid 2009 when Super 5 Transport started operating their HIGER units, they initially started a 40PHp fare which was 20PHp lower than RTMI was charging that time, and guess what happened next??they filed a case against Super 5 through LTFRB and in few days time,Super 5 was ordered to adhere with the fare matrix.then the poor small player charged 60PHp then on and became 80Php..Suddenly a new trick was introduced by RTMI or is it really new?? the fare punched in the ticket is 80PHp but they would actually say the fare is discounted and is only 50PHp...Of course who would not grab this low fare,so Super 5 filed a case too against RTMI but they're just to small to be heard, and until now the bullying continues..Having the more expensive bus using HIGER,being on the right fare matrix is hurting the local player and if RTMI succeeds on bullying Super 5 and eventually kills it,expect a skyrocketing fare for the IGN-CGY run.
is this what happened to those Fortune Express,Bunny Express and Lilian Express right, bullied, disappear and look how much the fare has grown.MONOPOLY in the making.VTI(Vallacar Transport)which is the mother company of RTMI,Bachelor Express and Ceres is too big now that it's easy for them to kill their competitors...the whole Negros is a good example..

I really enjoyed dining at Fontina Restaurant a few months after its opening on my visit to Iligan towards the end of last year. As I have been able to experience more and more places to enjoy a meal while I am in Iligan I have begun putting reviews of my experiences on www.virtualtourist.com as a place to store my reviews and also bring them to the attention of other potential visitors who may be checking out some of th etravel sites on the internet.

Many of the restaurants and eateries of all kinds that are new, I usually find out about them first right here on SSC-Iligan. Another reason I started a series of reviews on www.virtualtourist.com was to update obsolete information in some of the earlier reviews by others that date back to 2003, where I knew that the information in those reviews were no longer up to date and accurate. I try to keep these reviews to my own personal experiences and impressions. I think I must have visited Fontina at least ten times during my last visit as it was convieniently located for me. Not to forget the favorites from previous visits I went to them on more than one occasion also.

As many of you may remember, as I was arranging my first visit, I had recieved all kinds of health precautions about going to The Philippines, especiall when it came to eating. After several visits I am happy to say I have never had any kind of problem at any of the places I have enjoyed eating while in Iligan City and for that matter CDO as well !

Here's the Review on Fontina :

There are always new things to see and do each time i visit Iligan and on my recent visit it included the sparkling new Fontina Restaurant opened mid year 2010. This clean, bright and cheerful dining establishment convieniently located next to Kingsway Inn on Tibanga Highway has rapidly become a popular place with Iliganons, along with domestic and international visitors.

The menu features a wide variety of meals, beverages and deserts of local and internationally known favorites. If you desire to try something purely Filipino, it's all there for you. The food is individually prepared as opposed to production line style as found in chain or fast food restaurants.

The service is excellent with a very hospitable and courtious staff. It may " seem " as though it may take a few minutes longer for your food to be delivered to your table than some other restaurants but that insures your order has recieved the personal attention to detail that it deserves. The ambience at Fontina encourages you to take your time and enjoy your experience there and this is something I appreciate when spending time dining with friends I visit in Iligan City, who also agreed with my impression of Fontina.

This was the first time I had tried a " Mango Shake " to enjoy with my meal and a few times a second one to enjoy afterwards.

You have a choice of indoor ( smoke free ) dining or outdoor on the front porch area and the covered area on one side of the building. I spent an enjoyable few minutes sitting at an outdoor table with a Mango Shake watching the sights and sounds of Tibanga Highway go by. As an international visitor to Iligan City I really enjoyed doing this.

The exciting desert menu sent my tastebuds into orbit and I found myself " doing a Double " on the freshly made Mango Cake.

This restaurant is very clean and well maintained and that includes the full feature rest room ( Comfort Room ), which is something that may not be found in all dining establisments in The Philippines. Fontina is fully air conditioned, they accept credit cards ( yes, foriegn issued cards will work here ). Fontina is WiFi equipped and I noticed several people with their Laptops websurfing while enjoying their lunch. There is off street parking on the side of the building. for a party or event there is a catering room on the second floor.

Fontina is a family owned and operated restaurant by a family with a long track record of professionalism which is certainly reflected in a great dining experience at a modest and affordable cost.

see their website for further information and some great pictures !

Favorite Dish: I can not remember the exact name of it on the menu. I usually try to order something familiar to me for the first few visits to a new restaurant for comparison to meals I am familiar with. I had a beef over rice with mixed vegatables. It was well prepared and attractively served and the beef was cooked just right, not undercooked and not overcooked, Just the way I like it !

langyaw: "the new City gov offices were supposed to be built there, but the idea was scrapped because that area acts as a catch basin during heavy rains. it is silty and muddy.
if they build anything in that area, they'll have to elevate the structure. that means the surrounding areas will become the catch basin. it's a no-win situation unless they DRASTICALLY improve the city's drainage, and punish those who throw garbage into open canals and drainage systems.

Nice to hear that good news. Sana may makapag post ng pic about that development kahit man lang yung area location.tnx. Congrats to that new develpement. Soon we will have our own world class convention center.:applause::applause::applause:

Belmonte supports Pres. Aquino’s farm-to-market road projects Implementing System (http://www.iligan.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4961&Itemid=762)
Wednesday, 02 March 2011
by: Melvin T. Anggot, Virgilio C. Garcia

Iligan City, Philippines – Congressman Vicente “Varf” Belmonte, Jr. of the Lone District of Iligan City expressed his support to the new system of President Noynoy Aquino in the implementation of farm-to-market road projects.

Belmonte said the president directed the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to implement 70% cementing and 30% opening and graveling.

The congressman believe that with the new system, roads would remain sturdy and serviceable for up to 20 to 30 years in the hinterlands and mountainous regions and because these roads would not be easily washed out by rain water. In the old system, roads are maintained by graveling only.

Congressman Belmonte also planned to convert several roads in the hinterland barangays to national road because he said it is easier to get funds which also coincided with the intention of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz.

New Ways of Increasing ICWS Revenue

Iligan City, Philippines -Engr. Christine Orbe presented to Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz in the department heads meeting last Monday, March 1 new ways to increase the revenues of the Iligan City Waterworks System Office (ICWS).

These are to increase water rates to a reasonable level and to increase water analysis fees collected from owners of water refilling stations.

The ICWS manager said she has yet to submit to the Sangguniang Panlungsod particularly to the Committee on Ways and Means and Committee on Water the draft of the schedule of water tariff for deliberation of the city council.

In this way, Orbe said the revenues would cover the operational expenses of ICWS and not depend solely on the millions from the city coffers.

By way of the new system, ICWS hoped to collect P150 million every year, a departure from the annual average collection of P40 million.

Water Expansion Project Contractor to meet Mayor Cruz and City Officials to Discuss Pipelaying Work Details

Iligan City, Philippines - Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz and other city officials will meet with joint venture contractor of the massive water expansion project this week.

They will discuss the simultaneous pipelaying from the intake dam of Sitio Abaga to the city and towards Barangay Dalipuga.

Earlier, Mayor Cruz directed the Project Implementing Unit (PIU) to start pipelaying in the city in to avoid traffic congestion in anticipation of the coming activities of the Diyandi Festival in September.

In the department heads meeting on Monday, February 28, PIU Manager Merlito Catolico said the pipelaying schedule has been prepared and this will be presented to the contractor in their meeting.

Up to this writing, PIU is checking the vacant schedules of concerned officials so that the date, place and time of the meeting will be determined.

PIU will meet with the contractor, officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways, City Engineer’s Office, Iligan City Waterworks Systems Office and telecommunication firms and other offices where their facilities will be affected by the pipelaying activities.

Contractor Laid out 235 pipes for Water Expansion Project

Iligan City, Philippines - City Councilor Moises Dalisay, Jr. said a total of 235 pipes in the on-going work have been laid out for the 495 Million Peso – Water Expansion Project of the city.

Based on the report received by Councilor Dalisay from the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), 104 pipes have been laid out in Zone 1 to 3, Sitio Panul-iran, Barangay Abuno and Zone 1 to 5, Sitio Malindawag in the same barangay.

Also laid out were 98 pipes at Barangay Tipanoy and 26 pipes were laid out in Barangay Ubaldo Laya going to Tubod.

The Chairman of the Committee on Water of the city council said the implementation of the project has not been suspended in spite of the case filed by critics of the mayor.

^^ Our water rates here are the cheapest I think in the whole Mindanao, if not the entire country, but I'd rather pay for it even if it's expensive as long as it flows 24/7.

Work on Water Project not Suspended says Dalisay (http://www.iligan.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4953&Itemid=762)
Tuesday, 01 March 2011
by: Melvin T. Anggot, Virgilio C. Garcia
Iligan City, Philippines - City Councilor Moises Dalisay, Jr. said the work on the massive water improvement project will continue in spite of the case filed by a supplies bidder to the Ombudsman.

This is in contrast to what a former councilor is saying over the radio.

In the launching program of Water Conservation Month at city hall yesterday, Dalisay explained that there is no reason that work on the project would be suspended as no temporary restraining order (TRO) or an injunction has been issued by the court.

The Chairman of the Committee on Water of the city council said there is nothing to worry on the decision of the Manila Regional Trial Court to stop work on the project as this has been appealed by the Land Bank and the City of Iligan to the Court of Appeals.

It was learned from Engr. Merlito Catolico, Manager of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) that 26% of the work has been accomplished which included the completed intake box of the new system and the repair of two old systems.

No water rates increase in Iligan City

Iligan City, Philippines – City Councilor Moises Dalisay, Jr., Chairman of the Committee on Water of the city council said the city will not increase the water rates unlike what other cities in Mindanao are doing.

In the flag raising program at city hall yesterday, the lawmaker said Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz will not allow an increase in water rates because this will financially burden the consumers in spite of an abundance of water supply.

Councilor Dalisay said that when the 495 Million Peso- Water Expansion Project will be completed, water supply in the city will improve.

Dalisay said the water rates in Iligan is P20.00 per 10 cubic meter compared to Digos where consumers pay P186.

Along this line, Engr. Christine Orbe, Manager of the Iligan City Waterworks System said it is imperative that a rationalized water tariff will be implemented instead of the operations of ICWS being subsidized by the city of Iligan.

PNP Crimelab Director Arroyo thanked Mayor Cruz for permanent Crime Lab office in Iligan

Iligan City, Philippines – P/Sr. Supt. Lorlie Nilo Arroyo expressed his gratitude to Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz for providing the PNP with the Iligan City Crime Laboratory Building located at Camp Tomas Cabili in Barangay Tipanoy this city.

The Acting National Director of the PNP-Crime Laboratory was guest in the inauguration of the new crime laboratory yesterday.

In the occasion, Mayor Cruz said the city of Iligan has exerted its effort to support the needs of the police force in its campaign against criminality and the permanent office of the crime lab will enhance the capability of the police forensic service.

Aside from Iligan, Iligan City Crime Laboratory will also provide service to Lanao del Norte and Marawi City under P/Supt. Mary Leocy Mag-abo.

Free Medical and Dental Check-up for Women

This was learned from the office of City Councilor Marlene Young that is sponsoring the event targeting 500 women in the different barangays in the city. Four Hundred will undergo medical check-up and 100 will be given dental check-up. There will also be a free distribution of vitamins.

Young said the project is supported by Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz.

BIR RR16 posts an 8.6% increase in tax collections for January 2011
by Elaine O. Ratunil
PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=7&r=r10&id=19999)

A collection of Php940B in revenue taxes have been targeted for 2011 by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

This is actually higher by Php80B compared to the Php860B target, last year, Regional Director Esmeralda M. Tabule of BIR Revenue Region 16 that covers the area of Northern Mindanao.

The January collection figures of the region shows a collection of P433.17M, exceeding its tentative target by 34.5M or an 8.67% increase in collection for the same period, last year, by 100.9M or 30.40%.

For the month of February, tentative figures will show that the BIR RR16 is still short by Php130M for the monthly goal and Php63M from the collection in same period of 2009

“Thus, we are hoping that when all collections from the field will be in, these negative figures will be reversed,” she said

Facing this challenging task, Tabule said, “Our committed team is in place. Your BIR RR16 is sincere in its efforts to work hand in hand with you, our partners.”

“The men and women of BIR RR 16 are working very hard every single day to achieve our targets,” Tabule added.

Patrombon stakes world ranking, top seeding in ITF netfest
Souce (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/214346/patrombon-stakes-world-ranking-top-seeding-in-itf-netfest)

Filipino netter Jeson Patrombon will stake his world No. 10 junior ranking when he competes in the Chang LTAT-International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Championship on March 7 to 12 in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

The ITF Grade I event, which will be played on a hard court surface, has seeded 17-year-old Patrombon as first in the boys' singles that features 48 of the world’s top junior players.

This will be Patrombon's first tournament after a quarterfinal finish in the 2011 Australian Open Juniors Championships, where he lost to Great Britain’s George Morgoan in three hard-fought sets.

It is also the second time that the prized find from Iligan City is the top seed in an ITF tournament. He earned his first top seeding in the Xiamen ITF meet last September, with Patrombon going all the way to clinch the title against No. 7 Nikola Milojevic of Serbia.

Patrombon and female junior netter Marinel Rudas leave for Thailand on Wednesday to get a chance to practice on the playing surface.

"We have been really training hard this past few weeks to get ready for the ITF Grade I events we are set to compete in," said coach Manny Tecson, who also assured Patrombon's fans that the wart that bothered the Filipino junior netter's foot the past few months has completely healed.

After the Thailand tournament, Patrombon will see action in the 17th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup in Kuching, Malaysia from March 15 to 20 before flying home for the Mitsubishi Lancer ITF tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center on March 22.

Tecson said that although winning a title is their main objective, he is also hoping to prepare Patrombon for the professional circuit.

Marc Reyes, a Filipino-Spanish player who has competed in local events and is now under Tecson's wing is also set to compete as a pro, and will be competing with Patrombon in the Futures by May.

Reyes is set to see action in the $15,000 Men's Futures in India and $10,000 Men's Futures in Turkey before he proceeds to Italy.

"After the tournament in Manila we will be going back to Thailand for the Men's $10,000 Futures for two legs. Starting May, we will be hooking up with Marc Reyes in Italy for the Italian Open and some more men’s Futures before going to the French Open and Wimbledon," added Tecson.

Rudas meanwhile will have to undergo the qualifying tournament in the Thailand meet.

Aside from Rudas who is ranked 463, other local female netters hoping to gain slots for the main draw in Thailand are Tamitha Nguyen (344) and Marian Jade Capadocia (567).

Article a bit old but worth posting...

Iligan goes indigenous in celebrating National Arts Month
By Violeta M. Gloria

This city is celebrating the National Arts Month by pushing indigenous arts more than popular arts and those from other countries.

“We need to uphold our beliefs and values to promote our indigenous arts and our homegrown artists to know our distinct identities as Iliganons,” said city councilor Michelle E. Sweet, chair of the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s committee on history, culture and arts.

The late President Corazon Aquino signed Presidential Proclamation No. 683 in 1991 declaring February as National Arts Month to show appreciation to the country’s local artists and become a source of inspiration for the Filipino people, as well as instill a sense of patriotism in the younger generation.

The celebration includes live performances by Iligan-based cultural groups as well as Subanen, Manobo and Maranao performers. There is also an educational forum, photo contest and exhibit, painting exhibit, dance and musical contests and other activities based on the theme “Arte, Duyog sa Kinaiyahan, Kalinaw ug Kalamboan” (Arts, in tune with Nature, Peace and Development).

Abner Cagalawan, of Agus Band and one of the organizers, explained that the Iligan celebration is aimed at “re-popularizing the usage of various tribal or indigenous musical instruments along with the popular western instruments.”

Prof. Saturnina Rodil, a peace advocate, said in a forum on Wednesday that it is time for Iliganons to reflect on their values – like, why preferring ballet over indigenous dances, giving more value on Picasso instead of local painters. She urged Iliganons to embrace the local ballads, the works of Cebuano writers, and appreciate indigenous sculptures, the sarimanok and okir.

“We need to be sensitive of our culture and our sense of community even in architecture and in construction of buildings,” Rodil said, urging the audience to support local cultural dancers and singers.

Professor Frank Englis, conductor and music artist who manages the Octava Choral Society, lamented that people love to hear us sing and play, but do not want to support his choral group.

“The city government should help revive and preserve our traditions and culture thru arts because it’s only through this that we can enrich our tradition and customs,” he said.

Englis lauded the national government for helping revive the rondalla which will have its third national contest in Tagum City soon.

Agnes C. Maingat, officer-in-charge of the City Tourism Office, appreciated that there is a committee in the city council that focuses on culture and arts but stressed that “cultural tourism can only be possible from a well-developed cultural community which has preserved its cultural heritage. If this is done, only then can we encourage people to come and visit Iligan.”

Prof. Steven Patrick Fernandez, head of the Integrated Performing Arts Group (IPAG), said that to answer the needs of artists, the academe should establish an institute for the arts “where we can nurture for the next generations our religious beliefs, social practices, and arts.”

Sweet also looked into legislating local policies that will support the plans of all artists here and hone their expertise. She said she will encourage the participation of the private sector to make celebrations on arts more vibrant.

City to Realize P60 Million Savings from the Water Expansion Project
Friday, 04 March 2011
by: Melvin T. Anggot, Virgilio C. Garcia

http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/news%20image/waterprojectiligan.jpg

Iligan City, Philippines – The city stands to realize a saving of P60 million from the bank loan for the massive water expansion project under the administration of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz.

This was learned from Engr. Merlito Catolico, Manager of the Project Implementation Office (PIU) in a talk with the media recently.

Catolico said this is because the bidded cost of the contractor on civil works and pipes and fittings were lower than the approved budget cost or estimated project cost of the city government.

Mayor Cruz directed Engr. Christine Milagros Orbe of the Iligan City Waterworks Systems Office to prioritize projects that could be funded by the savings particularly in the changing of asbestos pipes and procurement of water maters and others.

Baslayan Creek

http://i945.photobucket.com/albums/ad291/Alingatong2/creek.jpg

Baslayan Street - a covered portion of the Baslayan Creek which is the main drainage outlet that empties much of the waterways (including the site of the proposed convention center in Brgy. Del Carmen) and esteros of the central business district to Iligan Bay. Unfortunately, the creek is polluted and heavily silted.

It was reported that dredging of the Baslayan Creek near the site of the proposed convention center was started to prevent flooding of the area. (Initial Steps for Convention Center Project Started (http://www.iligan.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4842&Itemid=762))

But do you really think the dredging will solve the flooding problem particularly the Del Carmen area? I don't think so. With a deeper/wider part at one end and a narrower opening at the other end, it would only cause an "embudo" (funnel) effect. Unless they'll do something on the covered portion of the creek, how do we know they are not actually making the problem worse?

My two cents.

^^ Slightly lower than the PhP 1,128,573,000 income for CY2009 based on the COA Report I read few days ago. Nevertheless, it's still in billions

According to the COA website (www.coa.gov.ph), the income of Iligan City for CY2009 stands at P1.046 Billion.... Just wondering about the "discrepancy" considering the fact that these 2 figures belong to a same source.... :bash:

Baslayan Creek

<SNIP>

Alingatong, you're right.
if they're dredging the blue-shaded portion of Baslayan creek, or anywhere upstream, this will, indeed, create a funnel effect and simply transfer the flooding from Del Carmen to another baranggay, most likely, a residential area where the funnel begins to narrow. :ohno:
the better approach, IMHO, is to dredge the outlet, and the covered portion, to create a reversed funnel, so that the water will freely move towards the sea. this would even probably dry up portions of the creek when there are no rains, and this is perfectly fine, rather than leave stagnant pools of water where mosquitoes breed during the dry season.
simultaneously, a campaign should be initiated to educate the residents along the creek NOT to throw their garbage in it, and the barangays along this creek should be empowered to fine and even prosecute anyone who violates this ordinance.
just another 2 cents. :cheers2:

^^ actually, solved na man nang flooding sa baslayan coz their is a diversion man-made creek from Villaverde to Brgy. Saray na man. Kay unlike before nga wala pa nang creek at the back of Caltex Tibanga near XRG hardware, ang Baslayan especially on the area near Halili Funeraria, dali ra mag flood on rainy days sa una pero karon wala na since naa nay diversion creek diha sa Villaverde. I dont think there is a need for dredging on the creek.

Speaking of flooding in the city, Baranggay San Miguel area, specifically along Sheker Street gets easily flooded even by a regular rain. Its only outlet is the narrow creek which leads to Kanaway area. This has been a major concern amongst the residents for the longest time now. Is there a plan to solve this problem too?

DOST scholar wins intl award in physics (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/science/8218-dost-scholar-wins-intl-award-in-physics)

http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/images/stories/daily_images/2011/March/03062011/science01.jpg

A SCHOLAR of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is bringing another source of pride for the Philippines as he wins a prestigious international award in physics for his work on semiconductor optics.
Dr. Ryan Balili, who graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) under a DOST scholarship, will be receiving the Gallieno Denardo Awards this year for his work on the development of a new source of coherent light which may be the future in the production of lasers.

The award is given by the International Commission for Optics (ICO) and the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) to young researchers from developing countries who are below 40 years old, active in research in optics and have contributed to the promotion of research activities in their own or another developing countries.

Balili currently heads the photonics research of MSU-IIT.

The winner of the Denardo Awards gets to take home a cash prize of $1,000, a diploma and an invitation to a three-week-long stay in Trieste, Italy, where he is given a chance to give a seminar on his work.

Balili explained that his work as a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh, together with his supervisor Prof. David Snoke, showed that the transition of particles into waves could be done at higher temperature which would require lesser power to generate.

The phenomenon is called Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC), named after Indian physicist Satyendranath Bose, who worked on the statistics of monoatomic ideal gases, and Albert Einstein, who speculated this macroscopic coherent state.

Einstein proposed that at very low temperatures, a certain type of identical particles, now called bosons, would “collapse,” or condense, into a single quantum mechanical wave.

However, in Balili’s work, they were able to demonstrate the same phenomenon at higher temperatures using polaritons, an energy particle which exists only in a medium that can be polarized by an electromagnetic wave.

“One way to think of a polariton BEC is that it is a state of matter that has some of the properties of a laser and some of the properties of a superconductor,” he said.

Balili and his group at the University of Pittsburgh said that what they were able to show is that the emitted light of the polariton BEC and its electrons are coherent, which is a property of superconductors that allows it to make electric current flow without resistance and wavelike interference of electrical signals.

Balili said the award came as a pleasant surprise to him as he was merely asked to submit records of his previous and present research outputs after attending a short course on Advanced Imaging in Optics in Italy.

“Although, this was not my first international award, it means more to me because it specifically searched for a science or scientists from developing countries. Due to the prevailing culture of research in developing countries, the value of promising scientists as effective agents of economic and social development are far too often ignored, if not belittled. International awards are sometimes a wake-up call to local leaders. They might start asking themselves why they have overlooked something more developed countries consider far too important, such as keeping a critical mass of active scientists,” he said.

Balili received the Physica Status Solidi Young Researcher Award for best research and presentation at the seventh International Conference on Excitonic Processes in Condensed Matter at Winston-Salem, USA, on June 30, 2006.

Dr. Leticia Catris, DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) officer in charge and deputy director, said the DOST-SEI is very happy for Balili as he has shown that the scholar graduates of the Philippines’ science department can be on a par, if not better, than their foreign colleagues.

“We congratulate Dr. Balili for this prestigious award and we believe that he can still do far more greater things for the Philippines. The scholars that we engender every year become part of the driving force of the science community, and eventually, our economy,” she said.

Catris avowed that DOST-SEI, being the science and technology human-resource development agency of the country, will continue to search for more aspiring engineers and scientists in the country and provide scholarships for them to fulfill their dreams and be a productive force in the Philippines.

Iligan’s Budding Mathematician

Iligan has never run short of children with rare talents.

10-year old Deo Grace Manzano-Tiin, recent champion of photo contest sponsored by the Bureau of Fire Protection (in the observance of the Fire Prevention Month), proved she not only has an eye for beauty, but she also has a mind of a mathematical genius – in the making.

Deo’s love for photography is something that she got from her father, who is in the business of photographic arts. But what she does best actually is number crunching.

At this early age, she is already an Australian Math Competition Awardee, a top awardee in the Metro Bank Math challenge (elementary division), and she will be representing in the Math Training Guild (MTG) Competition in Naga City, this coming March 21, 2011.

But what makes this girl exceptional is her passion for Sudoku ( a Japanese mathematical game puzzle). Unknown to many, she was Region 10’s Champion for Sudoku Math Competition in October 2010. And early this year, she bagged the Distinction Award for being the sole representative for Region 10, during the 5th National Sudoku Math Competition (Whizkid Category) held in Manila.

Deo is the eldest child of Engr. Antonio R. Tiin, Jr. and Dra. Mary Luz Manzano.

Patrombon scores another twin kill in Thailand

Tournament top seed Jeson Patrombon showed his maturity anew in the Chang LTAT-ITF Junior Championship, pulling out a tough 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Dutchman Paul Monteban in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

The 17-year-old Patrombon, who also advanced in the quarterfinals of the boys' doubles with partner Jaden Grinter of New Zealand, will next face Romania's Teodor Nicolae Marin in singles play in the ITF Grade I event.

The 10th-seeded Marin entered the Round of 16 after a 6-3, 6-2 win over unseeded Jordan Thompson of Australia.

Monteban managed to match Patrombon's skills in their Round of 32 match, but the Iligan City native showed composure against his rival's determined bid.

"It was a battle of the minds and Jeson proved to be the tougher one until the end," said coach Manny Tecson.

"At this level, it's not about the ranking that counts, but how a player manages the big points, and how a player pulls himself together to withstand the constant pressure being thrown at you by your opponents," added Tecson.

Tied at 1-set apiece, the 10th-ranked Patrombon broke Monteban's service early in the deciding third frame, but his Dutch opponent still managed to put up a scare in the ninth game with the Filipino ace serving for game point.

With Patrombon enjoying triple match point (40-0), Monteban won the next two points to put some pressure on the youthful Filipino.

But Patrombon held on, engaging Monteban in a long rally before the latter committed an unforced error that somehow zapped the fight out of him.

"The level of the competition is as high as that of Grade A, and all the players are extremely good. A lot of the seeded players were booted out in the first or second round. That is why I'm very satisfied with the way Jeson fought, and as far as his physical condition is concerned, it is holding up to the challenge," said Tecson.

Patrombon and Grinter also marched to the quarterfinals after posting a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the eighth-seeded pair of China's Xin Gao and Wang Chieh-Fu of Chinese-Taipei.

The fourth-seeded duo of Patrombon and Grinter guns for a semis seat against the No. 2 pair of Pedja Krstin of Serbia and Russia's Maxim Lunkin, who downed Gregoire Barrere and Enzo Couacaud of France, 6-2, 2-6 (10-4). – JVP, KY, GMA News (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/214949/patrombon-scores-another-twin-kill-in-thailand)

Region X Congressional Representatives support NorMin 2012 budgets
Source (http://www.businessweekmindanao.com/2011/03/region-x-congressional-representatives-support-normin-2012-budgets.html)

The Advisory Committee of the Regional Development Council of Northern Mindanao (RDC-X AdCom), composed of the Officers of the RDC and the Congressional Representatives and Senators of Region X, discussed the budgets, including the priority programs and projects, of Northern Mindanao (NorMin) agencies on March 7, 2011 at the House of Representatives, Quezon City. The meeting was graced by no less than the Honorable House Speaker, Congressman Feliciano R. Belmonte, Jr. of the 4th District of Quezon City; Socio-Economic Planning Secretary Cayetano W. Paderanga, Jr.; and the Honorable Assistant Secretary of the DOTC project Management Office, Ildefonso T. Patdu, Jr.

RDC-X Chair and Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz, acknowledged Congressman Rufus B. Rodriguez of the 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro City as the lead convenor and Congressman Loreto Leo S. Ocampos as the co-convenor of the committee meeting. “We need the help of our region’s representatives in getting enough share of the national budget to undertake the priority programs and projects lined up in our regional and local development plans and in instituting policies that can further boost the region’s development,” he said.

Congressman Rodriguez introduced House Speaker Belmonte as an ally especially in the development of Region X’s major transport projects. Speaker Belmonte acknowledged the Congressmen’s effort to convene in support of the region. In his keynote address, the Speaker expressed appreciation of Mayor Cruz’s plan presentation saying that it is better than most development plans. He recognized Northern Mindanao’s potentials, noting its being the largest economy in Mindanao with the third highest per capita GRDP nationwide in 2009. He expects local leadership to complement, if not supplement, national efforts in maintaining the country’s peace and order. He also wants to see synchronized efforts in achieving equitable and inclusive growth for Mindanao and the country as well. Secretary Paderanga , after presenting the 2011-2016 Philippine Development Plan, said that the support of the legislators is needed in moving the budgets to the regions, where the action is.

The eight (8) congressional representatives present expressed support to the RDC-endorsed budget proposals with an aggregate total of P21.5 billion (social sector-58%; infrastructure sector, 32%; economic sector, 9%; and the macro and development administration sector, 1%).

The Advisory Committee also discussed and passed, among others, resolutions on the following: 1) Support to the project on Disaster Risk Reduction-Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA) entitled “A Comprehensive Approach Towards a Resilient Region X;” 2) Support to the proposed Science and Technology University of the Philippines in Mindanao; and 3) The need to ensure that Mindanao gets 30% of the national budget and each Mindanao region get an equitable share. The body also expressed support to the Mindanao Railway Project the feasibility study of which would be repackaged by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) using the PPP/ PSP/Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) modality. Patrombon gains semis
Source (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/308909/patrombon-gains-semis)

Jeson Patrombon recovered from an opening-set loss and beat Teodor Nicolae Marin of Romania, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, to storm into the semifinals of the ITF/LTAT Junior Tennis Championships in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

Caught flat-footed in the opening set, the top-ranked Patrombon found his rhythm in the next set, producing crisp shots that baffled his rival as he moved two wins shy of winning the crown.

The victory booked the 17-year-old Iligan City netter a date with seventh seed Pedja Krstin of Serbia, who thumped Enzo Couacaud of France, 6-4, 6-2. Krstin, 16, is no pushover.

Patrombon and his Kiwi partner Jaden Grinter, meanwhile, saw the end of their doubles campaign after losing to second seed Krstin and Maxim Lunkin of Russia, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8, in the semifinals. —

@Shalimar888 Thanks for the pics. You must be using the same " Litter Filter " that Alingatong uses on his camera. On so many street scenes of Iligan I hardly ever see much, if any, litter in the streets. For a city the size and population of Iligan I have always found this to be quite impressive ! You never know what small details in a picture that will capture someones attention. It appears that you may be a new poster here, Welcome to SSC - Iligan. This forum has been my window for Iligan for a long time.

Only for the toughest
Source (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/sports/2011/03/12/only-toughest-144537)

FOUR triathletes and a mountainbiker’s stamina, endurance and ability to concentrate despite the fatigue will be tested every day for a month in the Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge, which will go around the entire country.

The challengers—Monica Torres, Popo Remegio, TJ Isla, Anthony Cuerpo and Chok Martinez—who recently completed another grueling challenge in Danao, Bohol, made a pit stop in Cebu last Friday and shared their experience.

For a month, these athletes will undergo several surprise challenges that will test them not just physically but also mentally as they try to cover the whole country. The athlete who posts the fastest time will pocket the P500,000 top purse.

30 days

“This will be a 30-day challenge and will cover the entire Philippines. I joined the race because it’s an opportunity for me to be trained and to go to the different places in the country for free,” said Cuerpo, who is from Iligan City.

Cuerpo, a mountain biker, is a restaurateur by profession. Despite being the oldest among the finalists, he feels confident that he can still beat his competitors, who are almost half his age.

“Ive joined several adventure races. And endurance has always been my strength,” Cuerpo said.

The race started in Davao where they biked for three days. “It was pure mountain trail biking and on the fourth day, we had a swimming challenge,” Cuerpo said

The Davao leg started with a three-hour road bike challenge from Davao to Bukidnon. They then trail-biked and ran for 30 minutes towards Cagayan de Oro, which was the first pit stop.

The next leg was in Bohol where a three-hour road bike challenge and another three-hour swimming challenge took place. It was followed by a kayak race at the Puntod loop. They finished off with a two-hour run towards the Bee Farm.

Unique

On the following day, they were off to Danao Adventure Park where the five challengers braved a trail run, kayak slalom and a mental challenge at the Danao Caves.

The Pharmaton MVP Unleashed Challenge is the first of its kind and is the most unique of all endurance races the nation has seen.

“This is a month-long race where not only physical power and endurance are put to the test but also the participants ability to strategize and maintain focus,” race director Neyney Guevarra said.

Guevarra said they will have the next leg in Camiguin but will not divulge what the challenges will be.

Patrombon survives Serbian foe's challenge, enters finals in Thailand
Source (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/215115/sports/patrombon-survives-serbian-foes-challenge-enters-finals-in-thailand)

Top seed Jeson Patrombon is getting used to surviving tough matches.

Patrombon was pushed to the limit by Serbian Pedga Kristin, but the Filipino ace managed to pull off a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4 win to enter the finals of the Chang LTAT-ITF Junior Championship in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

The 17-year-old showed poise to win the first set by tie-break, and once again displayed the same spunk in the deciding set third to survive Kristin's challenge. He will next face American Dean Berman for the boys' singles title in the ITF-sanctioned Grade A tournament.

Berman, ranked 45th in the world and who trains in Australia, easily disposed of eighth seed Stefan Lindmark of Sweden, 6-2, 6-2.

Patrombon is competing for the second time in the Thailand tournament. He was beaten in the semifinals by Australian Benjamin Mitchell, 3-6, 2-6, in last year's semifinals.

"Today was the third consecutive three-set match for Jeson, and again it went over three hours of tough and long rallies played in very hot and humid weather. We are being tested all the way, and we are responding to the test very positively," said coach Manny Tecson.

While the goal is to win the finals to prove that Patrombon deserves the top seeding in this tournament, Tecson is already satisfied and convinced that the young Iligan City netter is ready to compete as a professional.

"These tough matches that Jeson is pulling through are the key ingredients that we are looking for to prepare us for the professional level in the near future. Jason has been improving in all departments of his game, which are the technical, tactical and mental aspects," said Tecson.

A quarterfinalist in the Australian Open Juniors Championship last January, Patrombon hopes to play at the same level when he faces Berman to earn his first title win in a Grade I event.

Patrombon won a title last year as the top seed in the Grade 2 China Junior tourney.

Iligan is a coastal city pero marami pa ring areas na binabaha during heavy rains. Me mga waterways pero halos clogged up na o di kaya'y heavily silted. The local government has already identified the water exits that are silted and one of them is the Baslayan creek. In fairness, nag start na ang dredging and clearing in some parts of the creek believing that it will help lessen the incidence of flooding. :)

DTI Iligan steps up price monitoring of prime and basic commodities
by Lorry V. Gabule
Source (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=7&r=r10&id=22028)

Monitoring teams of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Lanao del Norte Provincial Office, had been making the rounds of stores all over Iligan City and major trading municipalities in Lanao del Norte.

The team devoted a one-day price monitoring activity in all city and provincial levels, simultaneously, nationwide on March 10, 2011 which covered all major grocery stores, supermarkets as well as retailers in the markets.

The activity aimed to ally public concern on unreasonable price increase of basic and prime commodities, said Provincial Director Ruel B. Paclipan, DTI Iligan City/ Lanao del Norte Provincial Office.

Results of monitoring showed that there were commodities which posted marked price increases like flour, coffee and some milk products, while other commodities remain stable, both in price and supply,

Meanwile, Paclipan said 17 grocery stores, 20 hardwares and 25 retailers in the Pala-o Central Markets were monitored for the prices of basic and prime commodities in Iligan City.

The monitoring was done, in coordination with the Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC)- Iligan City, through the Economic Enterprise Development and Management Office (EEDMO)-Market Superintendent’s Offices.

Likewise, a total of 78 grocery stores and market retailers were monitored in the municipalities of Tubod, Lala, and Kapatagan, all in Lanao del Norte.

About 73 of them were enjoined to comply with the price tag requirement as provided by Republic Act 71, or the Price tag Law.

They were then reminded to update the prices on all articles for sale and to display their price tags, conspicuously, Paclipan said.

Super Flyweight Prospect Marco Singwancha remains Undefeated
By Dong Secuya
PhilBoxing.com (http://philboxing.com/news/story-52292.html)

Iligan City native Marco Singwancha sent ring jester Daryl Amoncio of Butuan City to the canvas three times en route to a second round stoppage to register his 10th win and kept his immaculate record at the Inayawan Sports Complex here Saturday night. The Singwancha-Amoncio 8-round scheduled fight served as the main event of the GMA7 Buhay Boksingero boxing series that got underway also Saturday night.

Singwancha, whose birth name is Marco Demecillo and is jointly managed by the RWS and Singwancha stables, scored the first knockdown over Amoncio towards the end of the first round as Amoncio (4-16-0), who apparently was more eager to entertain the crowd than to find a way to defeat his opponent, waited for the referee's count to reach at 8 before quickly standing straight up as if nothing happened.

Amoncio went down again in the second round from a Singwancha combination and repeated the same antic by waiting and quickly standing up at the count of 8 with a smile on his face as the crowd burst into laughter. A couple of hard punches to the body by Singwancha moments later removed all traces of smile from Amoncio's face as he went down again to the canvas and this time for good.

In the other 8-rounder, Cebu's Noel Adelmita (13-2-2 3KO) stopped another ring jester Sherwin Manatad (17-31-4 1KO), also from Butuan City, in the 5th round.

Top photo: Marco Singwancha (R) walks to the neutral corner as Referee Ben Necesario waves off Daryl Amuncio.

(boy decena/mta)

Quote from my previous post years ago.

Since the local goverment passed this ordinance they should also issue guidance to help organisations who use CCTV to comply with the Personal Data Protection Act of 2007 (http://www.senate.gov.ph/lis/bill_res.aspx?congress=14&q=SBN-1371)/Data Protection Act of 2005 (http://www.senate.gov.ph/lis/bill_res.aspx?congress=13&q=SBN-2073)(if this already passed in the congress) and to help them inspire public confidence that they are using CCTV responsibly.

The local goverment should also publish following guidance to help organisations using CCTV to stay within the law.

Like this one CCTV code of practice 2008 (http://www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documents/library/data_protection/detailed_specialist_guides/ico_cctvfinal_2301.pdf)used in UK.

If my memory serves me right, the site of the proposed Iligan ICT Park will be at the back of MSU-IIT. Well I could be wrong.

@Alingatong That Pic with the Calesa going by the gas station with what appears to be no one at the pumps could be a real classic pic. With the price of gasoline continually going up affecting the cost of all motorized transportation, the Calesa is not dead yet !

At the moment, gasoline where I am is $3.79 / US Gallon ( regular unleaded 87 / 9 octane ) and increasing every few days. The last recent pic I saw of a gasoline pic in Iligan was about P 42 / Lieter. The present exchange rate of about P 43 to $1 puts the price of gasoline in Iligan to about $4.00 Per Gallon.

I am glad I had the opportunity to take a ride on a Calesa in Iligan. It was the first time I ever had the opportunity to ride on something like that.

@ Alingatong & Shalimar888 thanks for another great set of pics. I hired a trisicad for a few hours one day on my last visit to do some touring in the area that I refer to as " The Monument " pictured a few pages back. It is in the vicinity of Cheddings store and the Seaport.

I wanted to see the Seaport and was told that it is not open to the general public. On a future visit I will try to make arrangements ahead of time. I hired the trisicad in the vicinity of Platinum Bowling Lanes and the former London Biscuit Bldg to give you an idea of the route that was taken to get to the area of " The Monument " and the seaport. It was a nice way to tour some of the area there.

I had a couple of my Iliganon friends with me and had them explain to the Trisicad Driver that I would pay him wait time to wait for a while when I attempted to see the Seaport and also while I visited Cheddings Store and a few other stores in that area. I also gave the driver some extra to buy himself some refreshemnts for himself while he waited.

I found this a great way to see some of the areas I was interested in as it is slow enough and with enough visibility to really get a good look at things, stop and take some pics, look at some of the shops etc.

Dining out at Tita Fannies

By Nicole J. Managbanag
Saturday, March 19, 2011

DINERS who are craving for inexpensive but delectable native food are in for a try at Tita Fannies Liempo and Chicken Haus, located along Corrales-Yacapin Sts., Cagayan de Oro City.

The famous Tita Fannies restaurant all started from an utter experiment to put up a small-time liempo and chicken haus food business on November 18, 1999 along Zamora St. in Iligan City.

The small-time business sits in an ordinary-looking 100-meter barong-barong restaurant made out of simple bamboo furniture set with coconut wood structure and roof made of nipa. This simple yet attractive structure has now become a landmark of every Iliganon's picky taste buds.

Tita Fannies is owned by the Onque family. It started with just 10 marinated chicken and 20 pork liempo, which became its specialty menu.

Jap-Jap, the eldest child of the Onques and a graduate of Management Information Technology, says their first batch of liempo was sold out, while out of the 10 marinated roasted chicken, eight was sold.

"This was our only menu serve in the first days of operation until such time that we incorporated additional menu," says Jap-Jap, who manages Tita Fannies' franchise operation.

From that day on, Tita Fannies became a household name for every Iliganon who want more of their juicy, tasty roasted liempo and chicken.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5292/5539350725_4830a6cdf7_m.jpg

CAGAYAN DE ORO. The young entrepreneur, Jap-Jap Onque.

Jap-Jap's parents, Nilda and Ernesto, were both working in a government agency before Tita Fannies was born. Ernesto later retired from work and used his retirement benefits to put up Tita Fannies. And the rest is history.

From one branch, Tita Fannies expanded and put up two more outlets in Iligan City. It has also established branches in Tagbilaran, Bohol; Cebu City and now in Cagayan de Oro.

Jap-Jap says Tita Fannies is derived from his lola's name who is now 76 years old and is presently residing in Oroquieta City.

"My parents personally manage our business, especially in buying the ingredients everyday at dawn to make sure everything is fresh for the day's menu. All of us four siblings are also busy with our own task as dishwasher and cleaner. We are also the one who serve our customers as waiters and waitress," Jap-Jap says.

He recalls that his parents would always advise them to really get involved and love their business and treat it like their family.

But he is quick to add that it's not only the business that they took cared of but also the people behind Tita Fannies.

Jap-Jap says he and his siblings value the hard work and words of advice from their parents, which until now are instilled in their minds.

His younger brother, who is 27 years old and a graduate of business administration, studied culinary arts at a famous culinary school in Cebu. He now manages their commissary, making sure that all branches will have the same taste of their variety menu, especially its liempo which has a unique taste due to the special local herbs and spices.

"Aside from that, we also make it a point to provide full service restaurant where costumers will taste delicious and distinctly Filipino dishes, entertained by competent staff who make sure our clients would feel at home in an ambience that is truly Iliganon," Jap-Jap says.

As good service is synonymous to cleanliness and sanitation, he says Tita Fannies boasts of a setting that radiates a clean and sanitary atmosphere, as proven by the positive feedback from their regular customers who in some way had help in promoting the business through the "word of mouth."

Today, Tita Fannies is open for franchise to those who want to be part of their business.

Jap-Jap says they want to widen their range and nurture more the hard works of their parents.

"This family business will go a long, long way that even our children's children will enjoy the harvest of our fruit of labor," he says.

I enjoyed going to the new Imperial Appliance store on my last visit. I had bought some things from them in their former location on previous visits and watched the construction of their new store right here on SSC-Iligan.

The spacious first floor display area allows a better look at each individual item than at the former location where in certain areas items such as window air con units had to be crammed together to acomodate the many makes and models they have to offer. It was similar with some of the other things as well. Now things can be better displayed for a total look of the front and back of many items. I am not certain if any additional product lines or models of things have been included but that would not surprise me.

In the USA window Air Cons are not rated in Horsepower as they are there in The Phillipines. Ours are rated in " BTU " ( British Thermal Unit ). The only way I can make any kind of comparison is to view its physical size and pick it up to get a feel of the weight. That will give me a rough idea of its BTU capacity. This was easy to do at the new Imperial Appliance. One of the sales people recognized me from previous visits and gave me a pleasant welcome.

The second floor was all furniture. I am not really that much of a " Furniture Person " so there is not much I can describe only that it seemed attractively displayed and there were quite a few models to choose from. The entire store on the inside was clean, well lit and very inviting.

I did not see any access to the third floor and I assume that is primarily used for warehouse storage.

I enjoy going to stores like this as I like to compare products that are manufactured by world known manufacturers as well as local or regional branded items in a foriegn country, and what the selling price is as well as comparing differences, features etc. I had made several purchases from Imperial on previous visits which to me have been very satisfactory. One of the primary reasons I was attracted to Imperial in the first place was on my first visit to Iligan I walked by their former location and saw the big price cards on every item through the storefront window.

There are many accounts, worldwide, of how stores and merchants increase the price when they see a " foriegner " come in to buy something. there are also retail stores in tourist areas of big cities that over inflate prices or have other gimmicks to overcharge tourists. On things that I am familiar with or have an interest in, I know the approximate price that something should be selling for usually before I even enter a place. These days with worldwide access on the internet to many items and their selling price in one country or another prices can easily be verified.

I am very pleased that with any retailer I have made purchases from in Iligan City, that I have never been overcharged or what some would call " Skin Taxed " or " Tourist Taxed " . Sure, a reatiler could have raised a price or applied some kind of " added charge " to an item already price marked and made some extra peso but it would have ended up costing them in the long run in the potential of future sales. Stores such as Imperial Appliance, and others that I have done business with in Iligan made more peso from me by giving me the same deal as the would to a local Iliganon by getting my repeat business, and they have ! I always look forward to visiting these stores each time I visit as well as discovering additional ones.

Japeth Onque? Is that him on the pic? we were platoon mates during our ROTC days at IIT...I'm pretty sure he won't remember me after all those years! This guy is really "moneyed" but you won't see him flaunt things out just becoz they have that successful business. Simple and still down to earth even way back in 1998-1999.

Why is it that these faces always appear on each city government project poster, no matter how small or big the value of the project is?

Why not the faces of Iliganons who will benefit from these projects? Why not just remove their faces?

Philippine Economic Briefing

March 23, 2011, Mallberry Suites Hotel, Cagayan de Oro CityIssues on Infrastructure

Issue #1: Need for additional budget support to the Laguindingan International Airport (LIA) Offsite Components

Background

The Laguindingan International Airport will be operational soon. However, offsite preparations are also needed for it to be efficient as a major facility and further boost Northern Mindanao’s competitiveness.

Recommendations

■Government to provide incentives for more air transport providers to locate in LIA and offer direct flights
■Budget for road widening of the Cagayan de Oro to Iligan stretch of the Butuan-CDO–Iligan Road (BCIR) to address heavy traffic flow once LIA will operate.
■Provide incentives to investors who can put up the necessary facilities in Laguindingan e.g. utilities (water system) and fast ferries from Laguindingan to Ozamiz, Camiguin, CDO and Iligan.

From one visit to the next, I never know what may appear here in SSC-Iligan or on Youtube that will give me an idea for something to see and do on the next visit. Although I had known of IMCC it was not until Clarie Bontol became top notcher in the Nursing Licensure Exam that I read more about IMCC. Clarie brought a lot of positive publicity to IMCC and Iligan City through her accomplishment. This in itself however did not give me the desire to actually visit IMCC. It was a byproduct of this that convinced me that IMCC was a place I just had to see if it would be at all possible. Although many times arrangements must be made in advance, I have never been denied anything that I have wanted to visit in Iligan even if it is not a tourist attraction. Arrangements were made for me to tour IMCC in advance of my last visit.

Before I get too far ahead of myself, this Youtube Video is what gave me the desire to visit IMCC. This was part of a celebration for Clarie Bontol consisting of a group of nursing students performing a song about their school on stage. I enjoyed their performance even though I could not understand the words in Bisaya ( ? ) . The part of this video that really got my full attention was the reaction of the audience , in particular the screams from the Filipinas. I could sense the pride they have in their school and their class mates by their reaction and I thought to myself, " no translation needed " ! . When I met IMCC President Royce Torres he asked what prompted my interest to tour IMCC and that is what I pretty much explained to him. It was the " Audience Reaction " in that video .

Even though I can not understand most of the words, the visuals and my sence of being where every scene in this video was recorded make up for it.

PIA Press Release
2010/11/20

(mta/CIO Iligan)

http://www.pia.gov.ph (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&sec=reader&fi=p101120.htm&no=46)

Ngano kaha ing-ani man ni?
