iliganon Boy March 31st, 2011, 09:15 AM Is this really still the public market of Iligan? Cagayan, Ozamiz and Pagadian have already updated theirs but its quite unexpected for a highly urbanized city like Iligan not to do the same not unless there is a new site being planned.
tama most of the city had already upgraded there public market look at ozamis public market aka public mall very nice.. if the other cities can upgrade it iligan can upgrade also, i dont know why the city govt will not upgrade it..

rovineye April 2nd, 2011, 10:37 PM Some places of interest:
MARIA CRISTINA FALLS – Iligan’s greatest heritage, the landmark of Iligan City. The most resplendent among the 20 plus waterfalls. Also known as the “Mother of Industry” and “Fountainhead of Progress.” It is 320 feet high, spews 130 cubic meters per second of water and the veritable source of industrial power in the city. Located at the borders of Barangay Maria Cristina, Ditucalan and Buru-un 9.3 kilometers away from the city proper. Since its water is being harnessed for electric power, full grandeur viewing of the waterfalls is every Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00 in the morning.
MIMBALUT FALLS - a not so high and mighty falls with a drop of approximately 90 feet high and is 18 ft. wide, but very alluring with its naturally limpid water. It is a site to behold and provides an enjoyable swimming spot, 11.0 kilometers away from the city proper.
TINAGO FALLS – literally hidden in a deep ravine, the falls cascading beautifully into a basin-like pool, clean, and deep and icy cold. It has an elevation of approximately 420 feet. It is 13.8 kilometers away from the city proper. Access to the falls is through the Iligan Tinago Mountain Resort, managed by the City Tourism Office with an entrance fee of P10.00.
LIMUNSUDAN FALLS – 35 kilometers away from the city proper. It has the claim of being the country’s highest waterfalls. It is a breathtaking two-tiered falls. The lower cascade alone is higher than the 320 feet Maria Cristina Falls. It has a total height of 870 feet. It is close to the eastern boundaries of Iligan, Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur. To reach the waterfalls, one has to trek for 2 days from Kalamalamahan, Barangay Rogongon, Iligan City.
HINDANG FALLS AND CAVES – a 40 ft. high two-tiered waterfalls with a lagoon ideal for swimming. Located at hinterland Barangay Hindang, approximately 20 kilometers from the city. Other attractions of the Barangay are the 6-8 cave clusters. Most caves have narrow entrance with long and deep chambers.
...at marami pang iba.
There is a place I know of in Iligan where you can see all of these falls, along with Pampam, Dalfuga, and partially blocked view of Dodiongan Falls (others as well I think!). All from one location if you know where to look. Some are partially blocked, but visible.
Know the place?

MoA fair showcases South's rich culture, tourist attractions
By MITCH ARCEO
April 15, 2011, 10:24pm
MANILA, Philippines – Northern Mindanao's rich culture and artistry have taken a back seat in previous years.
In order to showcase what Northern Mindanao has to offer, Pasundayag Northern Mindanao 2011 was launched at the Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia (MoA) on Thursday, a fair slated until April 19.
The event aims to promote Region X's tourism and eradicate the notion that Mindanao is not a safe place for tourists and locals.
"Ang akin lang sana mabigyan ng chance and Mindanao, lalo na ang Northern Mindanao na mapuntahan ng ating mga bisita (My hope is that Mindanao will have a chance, especially Northern Mindanao, to be visited by tourists),” said Jennifer Tan, chairperson of Northern Mindanao Regional Tourism Council.
“There was one kid beside me who commented about the colors of our costumes and handicrafts. He asked his mother where we are from. Kids love color and Northern Mindanao is abundant with it," Tan added.
Northern Mindanao is composed of five provinces (Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte) and eight cities (Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Ozamiz, Tangub, Oroquieta, Gingoog, Malaybalay, Valencia).
At the launch, mall goers were able to have a sneak preview of what's going to be featured during the entire fair.
The program kicked off with cultural performances by members of the Subanen, Higaonon, Bukidnon and Maranao tribes. The Bukidnon State University Dance Troupe and Chorale Group also performed.
The first day was graced by various government officials representing the provinces and cities of Northern Mindanao.
During the six-day event, various artists and tribes from Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Camiguin, Cagayan de Oro, Gingoog and Iligan will feature their songs and dances for everyone to see.
Aside from the performances, mall goers can look around at the booths featuring the region's food products, handicrafts, instruments, clothing, accessories, home decors, and more. A daily festival parade will be held from 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Department of Tourism Undersecretary Atty. Maria Victoria Jasmin said through the six-day exhibition, the region will be able to show what they can offer in terms of eco-tourism, adventure, leisure, craft, agriculture and aqua products, wellness, and more.
"Bukidnon's Mount Kitanglad National Park is the perfect place for bird watching. Tourists must see and experience the culture of Lanao del Norte and the paradise of Camiguin. Not to be forgotten are the provinces of Misamis Occidental and Oriental, Bukidnon, Gingoog, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, which all have colorful festivals," said Jasmin.
"There is a notable increase in the private investments, particularly in the hotel sector. Cagayan de Oro is now becoming a highly urbanized city with the presence of new and upcoming hotels with a soon-to-be completed Limketkai and Atrium hotels and other new developments by the private sector," she said.
She also noted that more tourists are expected to visit the region with the opening of the Laguindingan International Airport. Jasmin said local government units should continue in developing strategies that could further promote tourism in the region.

jcbroken April 18th, 2011, 09:01 PM Gov't promotes livelihood project for Iligan villagers
April 18, 2011, 3:11pm
ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, Philippines (PIA) – Experts from the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) conducted an actual demonstration on manufacturing sweets out of squash vegetable in the city recently.
Some 100 women from the villages of Abuno and Tipanoy, this city, witnessed how Science Research Specialist Josie Gonzales of the FNRI prepared the squash into delicacies like squash flan, “maha,” and even “ukoy.”
Among the sweets/delicacies under the FNRI’s livelihood training program that could be produced out of squash vegetable are “kutsinta,” “suman,” and “halaya,” that Gonzales introduced.
For his part, Oliver Yap, Iligan City Nutrition Action and Population Program Officer, said this training program is aimed at empowering stakeholders of the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program in the project sites through nutrition communication and technology transfer, with the FNRI’s “SIGLANG PINOY” Project.
The training will help create marketing products out of the squash sweets through the assistance of the City Development Livelihood Office, Yap added.
He said that the program focuses on squash technology because the two villages are main producers of squash in this city.
Various nutrients can also be acquired from squash vegetable, Yap explained.
These villages are among the targets of training programs supported by FNRI for food-poor provinces in the country based on the 2007 malnutrition survey, Yap said.
While Zenaida Narciso, FNRI chief science research specialist, said that the program aspires to empower the farmers and their wives in terms of nutrition and technology programs, to be able to have a livelihood.
“This program will also help increase consumption of products in line with nutrition program,” explained Narciso.
According to Narciso, in a span of three years, they will set up a Nutrition School On-the-Air to educate further the people in the area regarding proper nutrition.
They will also train them on squash canton production, and conduct training seminars for mothers on breastfeeding and complimentary feeding promotion.
Likewise, a physical activity for farmers through the Farmers’ Institution Training Service (FITS) will also be conducted to prevent them from liquor drinking and smoking.
“Evaluation on how much they learned from the program will be done yearly, until July 2013,” Narciso added.

Alingatong April 25th, 2011, 02:24 PM Iligan exec seeks in depth study of curfew ordinance
by Melvin T. Anggot/Virgilio C. Garcia
ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, April 25 -- Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz expressed the need for an in-depth study of the new Curfew Ordinance passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).
Cruz admitted that the implementation of the ordinance was rather lax because of the concern that this might affect night business in the city.
The Chief Executive was also worried about the effect of the ordinance on students who are late in going home especially those involved in group studies or are rehearsing for a school presentation.
He said the Chief of the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) will be provided with a copy of the curfew ordinance so the latter could give recommendations.
He will also meet with SP Kagawad Bayani Areola, author of the ordinance so they could confer on the proper implementation of the curfew.
Further, he also wanted the implementation of the ordinance not only in the city but in the barangays as well. (CIO/PIA10)

jcbroken April 25th, 2011, 08:47 PM New airport to serve as gateway to Northern Mindanao
By KRIS BAYOS
April 25, 2011, 4:06pm
MANILA, Philippines — Northern Mindanao will be more accessible to passengers, tourists, and businessmen, and enticing for trade and commerce with the scheduled completion of the Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LADP) next year.
This as the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is fast-tracking the completion of the LADP, which is due for completion by January 2012.
According to DoTC Secretary Jose de Jesus, the LADP is already in its final stages of construction, "with 80 percent of the civil works completed."
The project’s civil works include the construction of the runway, taxiways, main apron, passenger terminal building, operation and control tower, cargo terminal building, maintenance building, cold water receiving station, administration building, waste water treatment plant and other airport support facilities.
“We are fast-tracking the completion of the Laguindingan Airport which will serve as the new gateway to Mindanao,” De Jesus said.
The LADP, which was started on January 18, 2008, will put in place a new major trunkline airport that meets international standards in Barangay Moog, Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental.
"When it begins operations, the Laguindingan Airport will replace the existing Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro City," De Jesus said.
De Jesus also disclosed that the DoTC is currently preparing to procure the Air Navigation System and Support Facilities (ANSSF) for the new airport which is needed to meet international operational safety requirements.
“This new and modern airport will provide safe, comfortable and reliable transportation facilities in the Cagayan De Oro-Iligan City corridor and the Northern Mindanao region,” De Jesus noted.
He added that the airport was designed to satisfy the region’s current air transport requirements for both passengers and cargo as well as the expected surge in demand once it becomes operational.
The airport, De Jesus said, will have a multiplier effect on the economies of Misamis Oriental and neighboring provinces.
“The Laguindingan Airport will attract more tourists to the area and to the other provinces surrounding it,” he said.
“It will also become a key hub for the export of agricultural produce as well as other Northern Mindanao products. It will significantly contribute to boosting economic activities and, hence, help create more jobs for the local populace and for others – including displaced OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) – who may be enticed to go back to Northern Mindanao to take advantage of the economic opportunities that are expected to open up there," he added.

I doubt that Lumbia Airport will close down completely. It may have less passenger service than it does now and maybe many of those eating places out in the parking area will deminish but I just can not see it turn into a " Ghost Town " unless the property it occupies has more of a value as something else.

Iligan exec seeks in depth study of curfew ordinance
by Melvin T.
(CIO/PIA10)

One instance when this victims, are out from thier work place at around past midnight, they will take a motorcycle (Habal habal) or trycicad on thier way home, upon boarding this trycicad, this group of people wiil approach the victim and declared hold up. I think some of that trycicad or habal habl drivers were part of it because they let this people victimized their passenger. Wel all know that In Iligan city, during nyt especially around 11 pm up to the wee hours , there's no more utility vehicles during that time and also there is a zero visibility of Police enforcers. Police should be visible at nyt because crimes happens at nyt. So I think it is just right for the government to impose curfew with proper implementation. How many people will be victims of robbery are we going to wait before we impose this ordinance? We all know that Iligan City is becoming bigger now and more investment are coming in. Kawawa naman yung mga students also na naging biktima rin. Good governance with proper implementation of ordinances makes a city a livable place to live in and more investors to come to invest.
Alingatong April 29th, 2011, 10:13 AM Gov't prepares to take action on GSPI for non-operation
By BERNIE CAHILES-MAGKILAT
April 25, 2011, 11:11pm
MANILA, Philippines – The Indian-owned Global Steel Philippines Inc. (GSPI), operator of formerly state-owned National Steel Corp. (NSC) in Iligan City, has been given a month to submit a status report on its steel manufacturing operation as the government is bent on implementing a course of action, including possible foreclosure and takeover, to make the country’s supposedly biggest steel plant back on its feet after almost a year of staying idle.
This developed after the Board of Investments (BoI) has created a taskforce headed by executive director Raul V. Angeles to assess the GSPI situation.
Angeles had met with GSPI officials to require them to submit the status report within a month’s time or until the second week of May.
During the meeting, Angeles said that GSPI officials also informed him they were set to resume operation in July this year.
In a separate interview, BoI managing head Cristino L. Panlilio said the government should know the plans of GSPI for the Iligan plant.
It could be recalled that the Indian firm acquired the former NSC facilities in 2004 for P13.25 billion, including an upfront payment of P1 billion down payment it owed to secured NSC creditors and the balance to be paid over an eight-year period in compliance with the asset purchase agreement governing the sale of the Iligan-based steel manufacturing complex.
In 2008, however, GSPI took the creditors to a Singaporean arbitration court to stop its lenders from declaring it in payment default.
GSPI claimed the creditors and the liquidator were in breach of their obligations when they failed to deliver clean titles of the facilities owing to unpaid real estate taxes of the then NSC between 1999, the time when the plant closed, and September 2004 when GSPI took over the facilities. GSPI claimed it was not able to secure loans for its Iligan operation for failure to take possession of the titles to the property.
The company was saddled with financial difficulties including debts from the National Power Corp. and real estate taxes to the local government of Iligan City.

Philippines BOI wants to reopen Iligan City facilities of Global Steel
Wednesday, 27 Apr 2011
It is reported that the Board of Investments is exploring options on how to reopen the Iligan City facilities of Global Steel Philippines Inc, including foreclosure and resale to others.
Mr Cristino L Panlilio managing head of BOI said in an interview that it has formed a task force to review and monitor the status of Global Steel, which has been closed for about eight to nine months. Operations are limited to maintaining the equipment.
Mr Panlilio said BOI is looking at the opportunity cost for the firm as well as for the entire construction industry, considering the boom in construction activity and the expected requirements of public-private partnership projects.
He added that Global Steel has had its share of protection from government through higher tariffs on condition the facilities would remain in commercial operation. Tariffs on the products produced by Global Steel have been eliminated since June 2010.
Part of BOI's job is to monitor registered companies as part of good housekeeping, especially if they receive incentives.
Mr Panlilio said that cancellation of registration is an option. He added that Global Steel has not been enjoying a tax holiday and has in fact even reported losses.
The task force, led by BOI executive director Raul Angeles, has been given a month to complete its analysis of Global Steel’s prospects.
Mr Panlilio said that "Nothing is carved in stone. Selling it is an option. Anything goes."
He added that a number of conglomerates are interested in acquiring the Iligan City facilities but declined to elaborate.
Earlier reports said TKC Steel, which is into billet manufacturing, has been interested in the plant for some time.
Mr Panlilio said that Global Steel has to sort out a number of issues as it has been reported as unable to pay its electricity bills as well as its real estate taxes to Iligan City.
On top of that, he said, it is facing labor problems as a result of the closure of the firm. Added to these woes is the fact that the Indian owners may have defaulted in their payments for the assets they bought from the banks in the early part of the decade.
Mr Panlilio said that "So we have to sit down with them and find out the real situation. We can step in if it is legally ripe so it is best to discuss this first."
Mr Angeles said in a separate interview that officials of Global Steel promised that the plant would resume operation this July.
Mr Angeles said the officials said they are now in the process of restructuring debts with the local government and the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation.
Ahead of this, Angeles said BOI sent Global Steel a show cause letter inquiring on the status of its operation. He said the local government can foreclose the property, make an assessment of the taxes it owes, issue an order of levy and auction it off.
He added that "The taxes have to be paid. The local government wants the plant to operate because of the jobs it gives."
Mr Angeles said the task force would want a written report from Global Steel and that its actions would partly depend on such report. He said that a new set of board of directors has been installed in Global Steel.
The BOI study said Global Steel has real estate tax arrears of PHP 2.6 billion on the property in Iligan City under the name of the National Steel Corporation.
The parties entered into an amnesty agreement in 2004, reducing the liability to about PHP 140 million. The agreement was not implemented due to Global Steel’s failure to pay the promised amortization.
Under a purchase agreement in 2004, Global Steel was supposed to pay PHP 13.2 billion for the facilities for a period of eight years. Actual payment totaled PHP 1.5 billion, representing PHP 1 billion upfront initial payment and PHP 250 million each in 2006 and 2007. Other debts include PHP 1.852 million in water bills from the Iligan City Water District and PHP 600 million from Iligan Light and Power.

In a talk I gave at Iligan City Jail during my last visit, I comment to the Inmates it is not only the immediate victim of the crime that gets hurt, it also hurts the criminals family, friends and the entire city.
The industries that once supported Iligan City can no longer do that as they once did. New industries and business must be developed that will bring more money into Iligan and create more jobs must be nurtured and developed. A virtually untapped and an industry with great potential is international tourism. With the new Airport getting closer to opening, someday it could be bringing in 747's fully loaded with tourists and others who will be more than willing to spend their money in Iligan. This will develop additional businesses and could create thousands fo new jobs for Iliganons.
With the instantainious world communication The Internet has brought us in recent years however, news of crimes in Iligan become known all over the world as fast as they happen. Such news when read by potential tourists for Iligan may very well give those potential tourists a bad impression of Iligan City making them desire to go elsewhere to spend their tourist money. This creates a loss for all of Iligan. Less tourist revenue comming into the city means less jobs and less income for those that live here. Those people could easily be your parents and relatives and friends.
When many of you eventually return to conventional society, I hope you will keep these thoughts in mind should you ever think about involving youself in a criminal activity again, no matter how big or small.
Your City Government, organizations and many Iliganons and others that take great pride in Iligan City continue putting a lot of their time, effort and their own personal expense into showing the world so many of the good things Iligan has to offer. When reports of criminal activity in Iligan show up on the internet, the whole world finds out about it in minutes and detracts from all of the good things Iligan has to offer tourists from The Philippines and the world over.

Alingatong May 3rd, 2011, 11:18 AM Iligan City puts high premium on investment opportunities
by: Janeth Molo
ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, May 02 (PIA) – "We are doing our best to invite investors to come and invest in the city, thereby, open up employment opportunities for our constituents."
This was the message of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz during the 125th celebration of the International Labor Day, yesterday, May 1, at the City’s Freedom Park, where he addressed some 500 representatives from the different private and government workers’ unions.
“The basic problems confronting the labor sector, today, such as high unemployment rate, skyrocketing oil price, and low wage income among workers are worsened by conflicts in Middle East and Africa, the natural and manmade disasters, and financial and economic turndown in US and Europe,” the Mayor said.
With hopes of addressing these problems, Cruz, who is also the Chairperson of the Regional Development Council in Northern Mindanao (RDC-X), said he puts high premium on the importance of businesses and industries which can provide employment to millions of Filipinos and provide taxes to the government.
“But the greater catastrophe that can happen to our city and to our country is when these industries can no longer operate viably,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cruz is challenged to take action, one of which is the austerity measures he has implemented to limit the government expenditures such as electricity usage, decreasing the number of casual employees, and implementing compensatory leave instead of paying for overtime services of government workers.
Likewise, he said that in its own limited way, the local government unit is doing extra effort to all sectors in the society to provide basic services in education, agriculture, business initiatives, peace and order, among others.
This year’s labor day bears the theme: “Matuwid na Daan Tungo sa Kaunlaran Para sa Lahat,” to Iligan’s : “Mamumuo, Kusganong Iduso ngadto sa Kagamhanan ang mga Tinuod nga Solusyon sa Ekonomikanhong Kalisud (Workers’ unions strongly support the government in finding solutions to economic hardship).” (PIA-10)

Thanks for the info. I look forward to the new airport within the next year or so. I have enjoyed the simplicity of CDO's Lumbia Airport over the last several years that I have made use of it. It kind of reminds me of a local airport here how it was many years ago when the terminal was not much more than a quansit hut.
Previously, I have spent my day of arrival in CDO after my 24 hour journey and then gone to Iligan the following day and on departure spent a couple of days in CDO to be near the airport when it became time to leave.
With the new airport being that much closer to Iligan, I may be able to bypass staying in CDO , giving me more time to spend in Iligan.
As a rough guess I think it will be only about a 45 minute ride from the new airport ( I am still trying to figure out and remember its name LOL ) to Iligan and back. That is a real improvement !

THE government wants a detailed feasibility study done first on the viability of the Mindanao railway system project before it can be offered to interested private investors.
“We will outsource the feasibility study. We have to establish the viability of the project. If the viability gap can’t be afforded then we will not pursue it,” said Transportation Undersecretary Ruben Reinoso Jr.
The Department of Transportation and Communications official said the project, envisioned to link urban centers like the cities of Cagayan de Oro (CDO), Iligan, Zamboanga, Pagadian, Dipolog, Marawi, Cotabato and Davao, will be included in the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) program of the Aquino administration.
“We just have to make sure that the private sector will be able to recover its investment and the support of the government is affordable. So, we really need to see the study done first,” said Reinoso.
The project is estimated to cost P66 billion. It was first conceptualized during the Estrada administration.
Based on initial studies, the project would be constructed in phases. First phase will be from Laguindingan to CDO. The second phase will be from Laguindingan to Iligan City; the third from CDO to Phividec area in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental; and the last phase from Iligan City to Linamon town, Lanao del Norte. The proposed rail will span the entirety of Mindanao with a total length of approximately 2,000 kilometers.
Once established, the railway system is expected to cut travel time by 15-20 minutes from the present 90-minute travel time between CDO and Iligan.
The Cagayan de Oro-Iligan route is being prioritized since the covered stretch is an industrial gateway and a key trade center for the southern Philippine island group.
The railway system is envisioned to be implemented in four phases: initially from Laguindingan to Cagayan de Oro City; second from Laguindingan to Iligan City ; third from Cagayan de Oro to Phividec area in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental; and the fourth phase from Iligan City to Linamon town, Lanao del Norte. The project aims to cut the present 90-minute travel time by bus between Cagayan de Oro and Iligan to 15-20 minutes.
The Mindanao railway system project aims to provide “a sage and economical transport alternative for moving goods and people in Mindanao,” which in the long run, will help in the socioeconomic development of the island, said Reinoso.

unggoi May 4th, 2011, 04:01 PM In a talk I gave at Iligan City Jail during my last visit, I comment to the Inmates it is not only the immediate victim of the crime that gets hurt, it also hurts the criminals family, friends and the entire city.
When reports of criminal activity in Iligan show up on the internet, the whole world finds out about it in minutes and detracts from all of the good things Iligan has to offer tourists from The Philippines and the world over.

uonno May 5th, 2011, 03:23 AM Good morning.

According to some of the few drivers I was able to talk "mahal ang gasolina daun gansi daw sila". I like your suggestion uonno!
uonno May 5th, 2011, 10:20 AM I think its not a reason kung mahal ang gasolina or gnasi sila, kay kung naka meter with the right tariff, mo bayad baya ang mga pasahero ug sakto. Yung pakyaw style kasi parang ninakawan ka ng paharap di ba? so i think government should do something about this.
@irfritz tnx for liking.

tonight May 11th, 2011, 08:21 AM LANOFA gains Smart Club Minda semis (http://www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=684889&publicationSubCategoryId=69&keyword=)
MANILA, Philippines - LANOFA Football Club of Iligan was held to a 1-all draw by Real Marbel FC of Koronadal but still advanced to the Smart Club Championships semifinals after topping the all-Mindanao regionals recently at the Tionko football grounds in Davao City.
After the LANOFA booters had gone ahead on a goal by Mycon Bacotot in the 63rd minute, Real Marbel’s Rashid Akmad managed to salvage a standoff with an enterprising equalizer in the 83rd of the close and exciting match at the end of the four-team tournament.
With two wins and a draw, LANOFA emerged the all-Mindanao champion with seven points while Columbia FC of Davao, which capped its campaign with a 7-0 rout of Bric-a-Brac FC of Pagadian, took runner-up honors with a 2-1 win-loss record, equivalent to six points.
LANOFA and Columbia will represent Mindanao in the Smart Club semis of the competition organized by the Philippine Football Federation.
Striker Allan Rey Fernandez led the charge of the hosts by completing a hat trick (9th, 13th and 15th) while Marlon Demapanag (8th), Abdulsalam Mamadali (33rd) Michael Fernandez (65th) and Abder Petosakan (75th) were the other goal scorers in the lopsided match.
Real Marbel (1-1-1) wound up third while Bric-a-brac was last after absorbing three losses.
Opening today at the Central Philippines University football field in Jaro City, Iloilo is the Smart all-Visayas regionals featuring teams from Iloilo, Negros Oriental, Cebu and Leyte, with the top two squads also entering the semis.

BobNewYorkUSA May 11th, 2011, 04:31 PM I think Mayor Cruz is going to be a tough act to follow so I think it best be left to a true Iliganon. Who knows Mayor Cruz could run again even though I believe there is a 3 term max. The mayor of New York City, Mayor Bloomberg ran for an " extra Term " and won ! It would not surprise me that eventually Mayor Cruz will in the not too distant future have some kind of very official office in Manila. I have a feeling Your president NoyNoy already has a place for him there. Too bad, I really think there could be a place for Mayor Cruz here, in The White House someday !
I was informed that the event described above, Mayor Cruz and Congresman Belmonte were supposed to be there but had been called away on something more urgent at the time of this scheduled event. A similar situation that took place a few years ago on my first visit to Iligan, I show up at this event and find my name on the printed program for " Words Of Inspiration ". I had a general idea of what I wanted to talk to the inmates about but the actual talk, as described above almost work for word, spooled out from my mind in an on the spot ad-lib basis. In any of the public speaking I have ever done, I try to avoid pre-prepared written speeches or notes as I would rather keep my eyes and face straight ahead at the audience instead of looking down on a set of notes.
As an afterthought, If I do something like this again and I have enough advance time, I will write something down on paper and have one of my Iliganon friends translate and read it in Bisaya in case those listening can not grasp the full content of what I am talking about.
I have made an informal proposal to City Hall about the funding of a major much needed additional improvement for the Jail, I am hesitant to go into detail about it here but let's just say if they agree to my proposal to give credit where credit is due ( and it is not me I am talking about ) I will supply the funding for a certain major upgrade / improvement. In the mean time however, I have sent an additional donation for more tables and benches. They may already be in use by now. My first donation was for tables and benches for 100.
When Pictures began to appear on the internet of some of the events these tables and benches have been used for such as Medical & Dental clinic for the inmates, Presentations by local organizations for the Inmates, and for a Christmas party for the Inmates sponsored bu the Iligan Hotel & Restaurant Association, BJMP and others, this is what made me make a second donation.
I think many people and at times even myself, when we think of inmates, detainees and prisoners in a jail, they are just stashed behind bars, fed and watered like cattle, and forgotten about. This is definitely Not what is happening at the Iligan Jail. There is an effort by many to help these inmates regain their self respect and dignity and to try and make them have a better future for themselves upon their release from this facility.
Another thing I was impressed with when I researched recent history of Iligan City Jail is that it was " Peaceful Negotiation " between the Inmates, the volunteer hostages, and Mayor Cruz that resulted in immediate attention to lacking necessities and since then a continual and on going series of improvements. I think this has set a very good example of what peaceful negotiation can bring.

It looks like they appreciated what I had to say

The " Phase 1 " tables and benches donated in 2010. The " Phase 2 " tables and benches from a donation in 2011 may have already been completed by now.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod has approved the ordinance that laid out the policy, establishment and regulation in the operation of Weekend Night Market in the city.
In the final deliberation, this was finalized in the regular session by the personalities that composed the Executive Management Committee of the night market.
According to City Councilor Frederick Siao, who authored the ordinance, said the final revised draft ordinance has been incorporated the recommendations that temporarily managed the night market last week.
Included in the revised draft ordinance are the increase in space rental from P10 to P15 per square meter, use of streets at Maria Cristina Hotel and SBG Merchandizing, stalls outside Aguinaldo and Del Pilar Streets, making barangay clearance as requirement for stall supplicants, designating Barangay Poblacion as member of the committee.

CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines – Telecommunications provider, Globe Telecom Inc. Saturday gave assurances that it will offer free calls, texts and web browsing to its subscribers in Visayas and Mindanao affected by the company’s service outage which occurred last Monday, May 9.
Globe spokesperson Yoly Crisanto said the firm will be allocating free services including 50 text messages and five-minute calls for its prepaid subscribers as well as free web-browsing for its postpaid subscribers in selected provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao, beginning May 17.
Crisanto said its subscribers have already been receiving text messages from Globe informing them when and how they can avail of said free services to compensate for the May 9 service interruption.
“We are ready to compensate our subscribers. We truly apologize for any inconvenience it has caused them,” she told a media briefing Saturday.
Globe reported it has 27.3 million subscribers to date, which increased from 26.5 million in 2010.
Early in the morning of May 9, severed fiber optic cable caused service interruptions in the operations of Globe in the Visayas and Mindanao regions, preventing users from sending text messages, making calls, and surfing the Internet.
Cebu, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Davao, and Iligan, among other provinces were affected with blanket service interruption.
According to Crisanto, there were multiple fiber cables cuts, one being “weather-related, and three were unnatural cuts.”
The cuts, she added, “were strategically made in such a way that our redundancy lines were affected.”
Crisanto, however, did not say where the fiber cuts occurred.
She said that at present, service has been restored even as the company continues to investigate the incident.
“What we can assure our customers is that we are investing hundreds of millions of dollars to ensure that we give you the best service you deserve,” Crisanto stressed.

Alingatong May 15th, 2011, 05:22 AM Dr. Ryan Balili, Internationally-awarded Scientist
Saturday, 14 May 2011 00:00 Joseph Pimentel | AJPress Los Angeles

When Filipino scientist, Dr. Ryan Balili, won an international award for science earlier this year, rather than keeping the award to himself, he decided to use it as a platform and called on the government to do more to keep Filipino scientists at home.
“Those who have great potential to be good scientists opt for better-paying jobs that are not science-related,” Balili told the Sun Star Cebu.
“The best solution I could think of is to suspend the pork barrel and allocate it to science research, scientists, teachers, and other needed projects rather than let it go to corruption,” he added.
Those are harsh statements but many people would agree with him given the country’s reputation. There are many Filipinos that are smart and educated but often leave for other opportunities because of the country’s lack of resources.
Balili is an example of one who stayed in the Philippines and has done well.
Balili has racked up several international awards through the years including the Physica Status Solidi Young Researcher Award for best research and presentation during the 7th International Conference on Excitonic Processes in Condensed Matter at Winston-Salem, USA in 2006.
Most recently, he received the prestigious Gallieno Denardo Award, an award given by the International Commission for Optics and the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics that recognizes a scientists/researcher under 40 years of age from a developing country who has made significant contributions to the field of optics. He is the first Filipino to win the award.
He received a certificate, $1,000, and the invitation to participate in and deliver a lecture at an ICTP activity relevant to optics later in the year.
“Although, this was not my first international award, it means more to me because it specifically searched for a science or scientists from developing countries,” he said.
“Due to the prevailing culture of research in developing countries, the value of promising scientists as effective agents of economic and social development are far too often ignored if not belittled. International awards are sometimes a wake-up call to local leaders. They might start asking themselves why they have overlooked something more developed countries consider far too important, such as keeping a critical mass of active scientists.”
Balili, the head of the photonics research at the Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology, received the award after developing a new source of coherent light which may be the future in the production of lasers.
According to Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Balili began his award-winning work on semiconductor optics when he was a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh.
Under the tutelage of his supervisor Prof. David Snoke, they were able to show that the transition of particles into waves could be done at higher temperature which would require lesser power to generate.
The phenomenon is called Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) named after Indian physicist Satyendranath Bose who worked on the statistics of monoatomic ideal gases and Albert Einstein who speculated this macroscopic coherent state Einstein proposed that at very low temperatures a certain type of identical particles, now called bosons, would “collapse,” or condense, into a single quantum mechanical wave.
However, in Balili’s work, they were able to demonstrate the same phenomenon at higher temperatures using polaritons, an energy particle which exists only in a medium that can be polarized by an electromagnetic wave.
“One way to think of a polariton BEC is that it is a state of matter that has some of the properties of a laser and some of the properties of a superconductor,” he said.
Balili and his group at the University of Pittsburgh said that what they were able to show is that the emitted light of the polariton BEC and its electrons are coherent, which is a property of superconductors that allows it to make electric current flow without resistance and wavelike interference of electrical signals.
DOST-Science Education Institute Officer in Charge and Deputy Director Dr. Leticia V. Catris said she is very happy for Balili as he has shown that the scholar graduates of the Philippines’ science department can be at par, if not better, than their foreign colleagues.
“We congratulate Dr. Balili for this prestigious award and we believe that he can still do far more greater things for the Philippines. The scholars that we engender every year become part of the driving force of the science community and eventually, our economy,” she said.
Because of Balili’s achievements, Catris avowed that the DOST-SEI, being the science and technology human resource development agency of the country, will continue to search for more aspiring engineers and scientists in the country and
provide scholarships for them to fulfill their dreams and be a productive force in the Philippines.
“We shall be relentless in our pursuit to achieve in creating a critical mass of scientists and engineers and we hope that with Dr. Balili’s achievements, so as with other scholars, we can encourage more high school students to venture into a career in science and technology,” she said.

BobNewYorkUSA May 15th, 2011, 07:01 AM Thanks for the update pics of the Fashion Hub and nearby stores in that part of the city. I remember going into Trendline and a few of the others as well as Unitop on my last visit. Malls are nice although I also enjoy going individual shops like the ones in these pics. These are some of the things I appreciate about Iligan. In many small cities here, the local main st. type of stores as you have shown here have become derelict in recent decades due to so many shopping malls and superstores like Wallmart, Home Depot, Lowes etc. putting the small shops out of business. When Home Depot opened up in my town a few years ago, 18 long time local hardware stores went out of business, never to return. I really enjoyed seeing some of the repair shops in Iligan, something too that is now missing from the street scene here.
TONZI May 15th, 2011, 08:40 AM yeah, that's true. little mom and dad stores are gonna close becoz of those big shops. not pretty evident here in iligan and the rest of the philippines but the scenario is like the same: empty commercial strips and shops looking somewhere else for these stores to do business.

Here are latest aerial photos (from Flickr) of Laguindingan Airport and it shows two (2) air bridges already installed and connected to the Terminal Building.
An airbridge is an enclosed, movable connector which extends from an airport terminal gate to an airplane, allowing passengers to board and disembark without having to go outside. But I believe passengers of the airport’s maiden flight will bypass the loading bridge and instead walk on the tarmac….
Anyway, another significant development can be observed with the ongoing landscaping of the vacant spaces beside the runway and the taxiways for the introduction of greenery (grass).

Aboitiz-led Pilmico sets expansions
PILMICO FOODS Corp., the unlisted farming and food processing unit of the Aboitiz Group, plans to increase the capacity of its flour mill and swine farm this year to prepare for an expected rise in demand, a ranking official said late last week.
“I think our utilization is quite high so I believe our people are looking how they will increase the [flour] capacity,” Aboitiz Equity President and Chief Executive Erramon I. Aboitiz told reporters in a chance interview.
Already, the flour plant in Iligan, Lanao del Norte is operating close to 90% utilization rate, Mr. Aboitiz said. The feed mill, in contrast, will not be expanded yet.
“If we expand our mill, we will probably expand it in the same place,” he said, adding this will allow faster capacity hike given existing infrastructure.
“Consumption of flour has been going up over the years. It is just increase of demand, really,” Mr. Aboitiz added.
Mr. Aboitiz tagged the increasing population and the demand growth for fastfood items and noodles as key drivers in the company’s expansion.
The latest upgrade in the Iligan flour and feed plant was completed in July last year, increasing the feed capacity by 10,000 metric tons (MT) from about 100,000 MT per year after the P120-million redevelopment.
The company manufactures wheat flour and wheat by-products. It owns and sell flour brands like Sun Moon Star, Sunshine, Glowing Sun, Kutitap, Gold Star and Megastar.
The Aboitiz Group allotted P2 billion in capital spending this year for businesses outside power.
“Of the P2 billion, about P900 is going into food, about P350 million in the financial services and close to P700 million in the parent firm,” Mr. Aboitiz said.
“[The P900 million will be used] for increasing silo capacity [and] we will also be dredging our ports so that we can take in larger vessels,” Mr. Aboitiz said.
“On the food side, we are also expanding our company-owned [hog] farms because we are renting a lot of our swine farms. We experience better efficiency and productivity in company-owned farms,” Mr. Aboitiz said.
“Farm 5 for Pilmico Animal Nutrition’s swine business is also under construction and will be operational by June 2011. This will allow the company to increase its sow level to 8,500 heads from the current 6,500 heads,” the company said in its financial report.
But high costs of inputs cut Pilmico Foods’ profits by 24% to P282 million in the first quarter from P372 million in the previous year.
“We have not been able to pass on [to customers] all our increase in raw materials. We are absorbing and that is why our margins have come down,” Mr. Aboitiz said.
In the long run, the food and feed business will remain a core business of the company and a reliable source of cash, Mr. Aboitiz said.
“We still think that they are attractive businesses as a part of our core businesses...We still consider food and banking as a core business that we have,” Mr. Aboitiz said.
Incorporated in 1958, Pilmico Foods started out as a joint venture of the Aboitiz Group with the Lu Do Group, the Soriano Group and the Pillsbury Group of the United States. Shares in parent firm Aboitiz Equity Ventures fell by 0.26% to P39.10 apiece on Friday. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

tough May 24th, 2011, 02:49 AM Mayor Cruz to pursue three priority projects before term ends in 2013

ILIGAN CITY, PHILIPPINES – Former councilor Orlando Maglinao said Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz will pursue three priority projects before his term ends in 2013.
This will include the improvement of facilities and services of the Gregorio T. Lluch Memorial Hospital, construction of a new Pala-o Supermarket and construction of the Integrated Convention Center and Gymnasium Project.
In a press conference at city hall Friday, May 20, Maglinao said the city will upgrade the city hospital by availing of a donation from a Korean agency or from a group of doctors based in the United States.
The Pala-o Market will be pursued on a Build, Operate and Transfer Scheme (BOT) and the Convention Center through a bank loan.
Maglinao added that Mayor Cruz is determined to pursue these projects and confident that the flagship projects like the water expansion project, Central Materials Recovery and Composing Facility, Circumferential Road 3 and Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center project will be completed.
Maglinao was designated by Mayor Cruz to head the Project Management Unit (PMU) of the Integrated Convention Center and Gymnasium Project in addition to his task as Manager of Economic Enterprise Development and Management Office (EEDMO).
City not ignoring the possibility that funding for the convention center project can come from national leaders
According to former Councilor Orlando Maglinao, the city will not ignore the possibility that we could get financial assistance from political leaders of the nation, funds that we could use in the proposed Convention Center Project.
Project Implementation Unit and Design and Build Committee recommended that the city apply for a bank loan to finance the project but Mayor Cruz will try to secure funding from President Noynoy Aquino or from senators and congressmen.
The city government is concerned with the possibility that completion of the project might be unduly delayed due to a change in administration like what happened to the convention center project of Cagayan de Oro in 2001 that was started but left unfinished up to now.
Maglinao confident the city would be able to pay the loan for the Convention Center Project
The city is confident that it will be able to pay the money borrowed from the bank to fund the proposed Integrated Convention Center and Gymnasium Project.
This is what former councilor Orlando Maglinao, Manager of Project Management Unit said in the press conference at city hall Friday, May 20.
PMU and the Design and Build Committee recommended that the city borrow P950 million that will be used for the project. This will mean that with the P573 million already borrowed by the city, its total loan will be close to P1.5 billion borrowed from different financial institutions.
Maglinao said the city has a borrowing capacity of P2.5 billion.
Along this line, the PMU Manager is amenable to the Philippine National Bank suggestion to pay the existing loan of P573 million so that the city will have only one loan.
Under the suggestion, the city will be able to save P73 million annually because it has an interest rate of 5% only as compared to 10% to 14% interest paid by the city in the previous loan.
Groundbreaking of Convention Center set on June 16
Former councilor Orlando Maglinao said the scheduled Groundbreaking of the Integrated Convention Center and Gymnasium Project on June 16 will push through even if no loan has been obtained from the bank.
The Manager of the Project Management Unit said it is imperative that the site of the groundbreaking is prepared and implement ways of resolving flooding of the area that occur during rainy season.
Maglinao said they can already start working on the project even if there is no financing scheme yet as the project has been approved by the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Among the topics discussed during the recent visit by Turkish businessmen in Northern Mindanao is to have direct flights from Turkey to Mindanao particularly at the soon-to-be-opened Laguindingan Airport.
I’ve read this on a local tabloid “Newsline Mindanao”, a new periodical which has been circulating lately in the city. Below is the scanned article regarding the proposal. Click the images to read the article.

Iligan groundbreaks Convention Center- Gym on 61st Charter Day
by Janeth Molo
ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, May 29 (PIA)-- Iligan City’s vision of creating an integrated convention center-gymnasium will soon be finally realized as the groundbreaking ceremony of the project is set, this coming June 16, the commemoration of the city’s 61st Charter Day.
Per Sangguniang Resolution (SP) 11- 331 passed last April 11, the 4.8 hectare government-owned site in Barangays Bagong Silang and Pala-o, this city, will be the construction site of the convention center-gymnasium.
City Administrator Orlando M. Maglinao, who is also the project manager, described the convention center-gym as a state-of-the-art venue for hosting conventions, sports events, concerts both local and national, and other events.
It shall be a 3-storey building with 8,000 seating capacity, centralized air-conditioning system, and with high-technology audiovisual facilities.
This edifice will generate additional income for the city and the national government due to the influx of delegates, sports enthusiasts, students, parents, and tourists who are expected to attend the various sports competitions upon its full operation.
The said huge infrastructure project amounting to P950 million will be funded from interested banks in the country, an idea recently questioned by some media personnel, which was positively responded by the city administrator.
“The city has an outstanding record in terms of its debt servicing. I am confident and sure that our city government can pay for that. In fact a lot of banks are coming to us and offering us to loan after knowing this project,” he added.
He also said that offers coming from different banks indicate that the city is capable to borrow money even as much as Php2.0 billion and the project will be transparent as much as possible from start to finish. (PIA 10)

Nice observation bro. Pero I think that will also follow, based on the demand there is indeed a need for more hotel and accommodation. I wish this will be taken into consideration by business people.

P200M for completion of CDO Convention Center
Posted on June 15, 2009 by damarre
Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane, Jr. has endorsed to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo the release of an additional P200 million for the completion of the 7,700-seater convention center in Taguanao in Cagayan de Oro City.
http://static2.bareka.com/photos/medium/14023297.jpg
Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City), said works on the convention center are expected to resume soon since the funds would be coming from the 2009 General Appropriation Act.
Rodriguez is optimistic that the Cagayan de Oro International Trade and convention Multipurpose Center, initiated and envisioned by Sen. Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel, would showcase the city’s position as a gateway to tourism and business opportunities in North Mindanao.
“I am certain that very soon, Cagayan de Oro will have its very own premier convention center, one that can rival the very best that our country can offer and which can provide the business and tourism sectors with increased opportunities for growth, “Rodriguez said.
With the current international economic indicators pointing to the beginnings of a worldwide upturn following the global financial meltdown, Rodriguez said, the convention center’s completion would be a welcome indication of the city’s readiness to be part of a new wave of business opportunities for the region.
“Cagayan de Oro has always been a hub for trade opportunities in Northern Mindanao, and with the worst of the global financial crisis appearing to be over, we can now look forward to the re-emergence of our city as a gateway to business opportunities in our corner of the country,” Rodriguez remarked.
Rodriguez expressed the confidence that when completed, the 7,700-seater world class convention center would be a magnet for an increased number of large-scale local and international conventions, spurring growth in the business and tourism sectors.
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/Conv2BCenter.jpg
The Cagayan de Oro Convention and Civic Center is the first ever world class Trade and Convention Center being constructed in Mindanao. It was implemented utilizing the Design-Construct Scheme and is ideal for national, international and trade exhibits, as well as seminars and conventions.
Boasting of a 7,700 seating capacity, the Convention Center has several amenities like a multi-purpose hall that could accommodate 1,000 guests, a convertible indoor playing court, an exhibit area for 1,500 viewing guests with demountable partition for flexibility of expansion, 12 function rooms for 1,000 guests, 4 clubrooms with lockers and showers, cafeteria with approximately 100 seating capacity, and an administrative office, storage room and other support facilities.
Lack of funds had stalled construction of the multi-million convention center for sometime prompting Rodriguez to ask the Department of Public Works and Highways to provide additional funds for the project.

Does this means that Iligan Convention center is bigger than Cagayan De oro Convention Center? If thats the case dapat itong :applause::applause::applause:

oninBadz May 31st, 2011, 05:52 PM Solon wants to grant airline franchises to develop airports in rural areas
A lawmaker has filed a bill granting airline franchisees the right to develop airports in rural areas in the country.
Rep. Magtanggol Gunigundo (2nd District, Valenzuela City), author of House Bill 3775, said the proposal will provide a way to develop rural airports through the help of the private sector.
"Our country sorely needs dependable transport systems to make economically convenient and affordable access to and from rural areas. For commerce of any national importance to take any meaningful presence in a community, options of transport services must be made available to allow the use of the kind of service commensurate to the nature of the requirement," Gunigundo said.
Gunigundo said many airline companies can now expand their missionary routes by allowing them to invest in the construction and development of airport facilities in rural areas.
"Aside from land and sea transport facilities, dependable air transport services are needed for rural areas to progress in cadence with the rest of the country. Speed access between urban and rural areas may be provided only by the construction and maintenance of a rural air transport network complemented by the rehabilitation and maintenance of former existing airports in the remote areas of our archipelago," Gunigundo said.
Gunigundo said meaningful development takes place only through private commerce.
"There can be opportunities for these hubs of commerce to be built and to grow on their own on a strictly private basis without any government support," he said.
"Private sector participation in the development of rural transport systems is encouraged as an indispensable catalyst. We should help in the realization of our most laudable objective of uplifting the economic conditions in the far-flung countryside and to cope with the fast pace of the urban world," Gunigundo stressed.
Under the measure to be known as "Rural Airport Act," any franchisee may construct, manage, operate and/or maintain any rural airport in any part of the country in order to eventually make each municipality regularly accessible and within easy reach of the principal and proximate urban areas with a population of at least 100,000.
To encourage industries to be developed within the immediately surrounding area of the airport, the franchisee may establish, manage, lease and operate aircraft hangarage, educational facilities for aircraft mechanics, pilot and personnel; warehouses, light industry, commercial and financial facilities; hotel guest house and tourism facilities; and telecommunications facilities to support activities, provided these facilities are within five hundred-meter (500 m) radius of the runway of the said airports.
The bill also provides the franchises to takeover the management, maintenance and operation of any existing government agency-operated rural airport, provided that the franchisee's own annual operating costs for the same airport do not exceed 50 percent of the current government agency costs of operating and maintaining the said airport, adjusted for an annual increment not to exceed 10 percent per annum.
The franchisee, as well as the airports operated by the franchisee shall not be subject to any restrictive operation by any government agency except those that pertain to the national interest.
Also, the franchisee as operator of rural airport, shall be exempt from any and all taxes, including income, capital gains, lease, rental, gross, value-added, ad valorem, import and export duties on its aircraft parts and maintenance and overhauling equipment, interest on loans and dividends on investment contracted or granted, fuel, oil and real estate taxes. In lieu of the said taxes, the franchisee shall pay the government 5 percent of the gross revenues charged for all landing and take-off fees being charged on certified rural airports.
Furthermore, all the powers and privileges granted to an eligible franchisee shall be valid for 50 years and renewable for another 50 years, unless invalidated by Congress.
Violators shall be slapped with a P10,000 fine or imprisonment of six months or both.
^^
this would also pave way in reopening bunch of airports in Mindanao and would boost progress within the area. there could be some future for Iligan's RPMI:)

(PIA 10)
Wow, okay kaayo ni :okay:
the idea of a convention center is nice but we need to address the number of hotel rooms first..if we don't have adequate hotel rooms, then, there is no way delegates would make their conference here..even IIT's Iligan National National Writer's Workshop is lamenting the lack of hotels in the city as Maria Cristina Hotel is already deemed by them as "obsolete" and lacking in "standards"...

ILIGAN CITY-- In a recent flag raising ceremony, City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz invited several City Officials for a meeting in relation to planned holding of the "groundbreaking" of the envisioned Convention Center on June 16, 2011 which coincides "Adlaw sa Iligan " which the city holds to be able to build at a cost of P 950 Million.
Officials included Engr. Orlando Maglinao, City Councilor Frederick Siao, City Councilor Moises Dalisay, Jr. and several Department Heads.
The city plans to fund this project, with fresh loans from banking institutions but is also open to sourcing it from funds from Philippine Development Assistant Fund, (PDAF) or any other government funds, said Convention Center will be at Barangay Bagong Silang it was learned.

oninBadz June 11th, 2011, 03:25 PM Hope this Convention Center would not end up like the IBJT in Tambo. Look at the terminal now, left poorly maintained.I even doubt if maintenance is part of the daily routine. The structure itself is earning money but not maintained. Even if it's another admin's project it should still be taken care of as it is the Iliganons money being spent. This gateway structures should be presentable. Although Iligan has many things to offer in terms of tourism but first impression is always good. We do have zip lines to add up thrill but we should remember that zip lines are becoming a trend right now in different parts of the country, maybe we should focus on how to make tourist be interested with a unique Iligan City. :)

Number of hotels in Dubai as of July or September 2010 is 566.
Number of hotel rooms in Dubai as of July or September 2010 is 67,369.
And despite this, when it is convention / exhibition time at the World Trade Center, one will be hard pressed to look for available rooms.
while it is true that building a Convention Center will drive up demand for rooms, the rooms must come first.
otherwise, after staging one convention where participants and exhibitors have faced a room shortage, Iligan will surely face lots of bad talk and complaints about the experience of its guests. when this happens, will there still be another big convention?
a bad first impression is very hard to remove.:bash:
I say build the infrastructure, and the business will come. that should be city gov's priorities, not buildings.:cheers2:

seastwofly June 18th, 2011, 08:52 AM ^ Thanks for the update. But which boat has a direct route to Cebu? I ask this because if I'd go to Cebu by a boat, I don't want any stopover.
And, how big is this new boat in comparison to those boats that sail to Cdo from Cebu and vice versa?
No direct trip to Cebu, all ships passing Ozamiz port...
With regards to their size, they're smaller than CGY ships like TA-5 & DC Sr but not big difference compare to CF-3 & TA-3...

Bwisit, mao ra diay gyapon!! Mas maayo pa sa Cagayan nalang ta manakay gyapon. Bwisit nang mga kumpanyaha na. Pwede naman mo daretso nganong maghapit-hapit paman gyud, yawa!!!
roudinni June 18th, 2011, 02:59 PM ang reason ana is that ang Iligan port taas og pangayo sa mga modunggoay...ang IMASCO kuno ang hinungdan ani..accordingly Badelles daw ang tag-iya sa IMASCO...for as long as IMASCO is there, Iligan route will always be with Ozamiz or Dipolog routes..

seastwofly June 18th, 2011, 05:22 PM Siguro kung ma-sustain lang tingali about 60-70% ang pax capacity sa mga barkong gabyahe sa Iligan, maybe they will sail direct to Iligan, kaso mukhang di kaya... look what Cebu Ferries CF-1 saturday trip from Cebu kutob lang sa Ozamiz wala nay Iligan, that's why Tue & Thu lang sila sa Iligan, their reason not enough passenger...

Btw, mv Filipinas Dinagat sailed directly to Iligan before because she's small ship and with a capacity of 460 passengers only...
roudinni June 19th, 2011, 05:53 AM i dont think ang passenger capacity or traffic ang hinungdan..sa PPA website taas ang passenger traffic sa Iligan port..

I think, the data stated including sub-ports meaning Iligan with Mukas & Tubod which have also a quite big slice of the pax volume statistics...
Take note: Mukas is the 2010 Second busiest RORO port in the PHL, based on Vehicle and Pax volume...
