DONATE, DONT DETONATE (NO FIREWORKS FOR SENDONG)

P1.3-billion calamity fund ready
The national government, lawmakers, Albay province and Cebu City are extending financial aid to the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and other areas devastated by Tropical Storm “Sendong.”

At least a P1.3-billion calamity fund “will be released immediately” to help ease the plight of the victims of the storm, Budget Secretary Florencio B. Abad said Monday.

“We are ensuring the quick release of these funds so that victims will receive swift and proper assistance,” Abad said in a statement.

He said that with the fund, the government “is generously equipped” to mobilize and support disaster relief efforts in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan as well as other affected areas.

The budget secretary said that separate quick-response funds (QRF) were “adequately supporting” the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of National Defense and Department of Education in their efforts to provide direct and immediate support to storm-stricken areas.

“We also have the local government support fund shares of all affected local government units, for whom President Aquino will (on Tuesday) provide special allotment release orders and notices of allocation,” Abad said.

He said that if additional disaster-response funds were required, the national government had sufficient reserves to augment the calamity fund and QRFs.

Salary deduction

In the House of Representatives, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. required each of the 285 members of the chamber to donate at least P20,000 of their salaries to victims of the storm.

In a press briefing, Belmonte said House Resolution No. 2017 was already being circulated to House members for signatures to allow the donation.

Belmonte and An Waray Representative Bem Noel said they were donating P100,000 each.

Alagad Representative Rodante Marcoleta said he was donating his one month salary on top of the 25 sacks of rice he had given to victims in Cagayan de Oro, which he coursed through Abante Mindanao Representative Maximo Rodriguez.

The Ako Bicol (AKB) party-list group said it would donate P250,000 to the victims in Cagayan de Oro.

“The situation needs an immediate national response. We have decided to give our all-out efforts, not just as an institution but as individuals,” Belmonte said.

He said he would present the resolution in plenary when the session resumes in January. “I am sure it will be unanimously endorsed by the entire membership. But we will now advance the amount to be given today (Monday) or tomorrow (Tuesday),” he added.

P1M from pork

Belmonte also urged congressmen to give P1 million each from their respective Priority Development Assistance Funds, also known as pork barrel, to be used in the rehabilitation of public infrastructure in the devastated areas.

“I am confident our colleagues will support this move,” Belmonte said.

Belmonte said the House would also give P1 million to the DSWD and half a million pesos each to the major television networks for their respective donation drives to aid victims of the calamity.

Cebu City donation

The Cebu City government will provide up to P5 million in financial assistance.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he would ask the Cebu City council to allocate between P3 million and P5 million, which would be shared by Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and other areas affected by Sendong.

Rama said the Cebu City budget office had certified the availability of P11 million in unused calamity funds.

Mobile morgue

He said the city would be sending its mobile morgue to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan to help identify and tag bodies fished out from the waters of neighboring provinces.

In Legazpi City, Governor Joey Salceda said Albay province donated P1 million to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan on Monday.

He said the cash assistance was drawn from the province’s calamity fund. Each city will get P500,000.

Albay’s gratitude

Salceda, in a text message, said “more than the amount which is modest, the Albay Sendong Aid Mission brings with it the spirit of solidarity and sense of kinship between our peoples,” a form of support which he said was “so critical to help them overcome this distressing period.”

He said the aid was also an expression of Albay’s gratitude to the local government units and the national government for the assistance they gave to Albay when it was hit by past disasters.

A team from the provincial legislative board and the provincial disaster risk reduction and management council is scheduled to leave for the two cities today to consult with local officials and communities on how Albay could further help assistance efforts.

Relief goods

Relief goods worth more than P17 million have been transported to Northern Mindanao to assist families in the devastated areas of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, according to the DSWD.

The DSWD is still welcoming donations. Clothes, mats, blankets and bottled water are among the preferred items. Volunteers are also needed in the department’s Cagayan de Oro office on Fr. Masterson Avenue, Upper Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City, for the repacking of relief goods.

A total of P12.724 million worth of relief goods from the UN World Food Program, Maynilad and the Philippine Red Cross were brought to the DSWD office on Sunday.

Another P4.35 million worth of relief assistance from the DSWD was also brought to its Northern Mindanao office as standby relief sources.

Earlier, the DSWD said it had prepositioned P10.7 million in standby funds and P57.69 million worth of relief supplies for Sendong victims.

Help is also coming from the Department of Transportation and Communications.

In a statement, Transportation Secretary Manuel Roxas II said he ordered the release of P1 million for the victims of the typhoon.

PEOPLE OF PANGASINAN CARES

Pangasinan sending P1-M each as donation to Cagayan de Oro, Iligan cities

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Dec. 20 (PNA) -- Governor Amado Espino Jr. has announced that the province has allocated P2 million for the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan where hundreds of their people have died due to flash floods spawned by heavy rains dumped by Tropical Storm "Sendong" over the weekend.

Governor Espino has instructed Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan to transmit the amount to the two cities even as he condoled with the victims of the disaster.

At the 'Media in Action' forum of the Pangasinan Press Club here Tuesday, Espino said he will also order the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) to conduct a simulation drill during the rainy season next year in order to prepare the people of Pangasinan.

He said this is in case big volume of water is spilled into the lowlands of Pangasinan from the San Roque Multi-Purpose Dam, the highest rock-fill dam in Southeast Asia.

The last time that unprecedented volume of water was released from the dam was three years ago at the height of typhoon "Pepeng", causing big havoc of destruction in eastern and central Pangasinan.

It almost happened anew in October this year at the height of typhoon "Emong" had Espino not threatened to take over the dam if it continues to deviate from its approved water release protocol.

This strategy, which was not exhausted in 2008 at the height of typhoon "Pepeng", worked well during typhoon "Emong", preventing another large-scale calamity in the province.

"This prompted operators of the dam to gradually release the water even before the water level of the dam reached its spilling level of 280 meters above sea level.

"In every typhoon tinututukan natin ang San Roque Dam because we do not want any more tragedy in Pangasinan," he said.

Pangasinan has the most managed PDRRMC throughout the country, functioning all year-round. (PNA)

Iloilo province gives P2-M aid to flood victims in C. De Oro, Iligan cities

ILOILO CITY, Dec. 20 (PNA) -- The Province of Iloilo has allotted P2 million in financial assistance to the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan which was devastated by the floods brought by Tropical Storm Sendong over the weekend.

Gov. Arthur Defensor, Sr. called for an emergency meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council on Tuesday to formalize the giving of financial aid to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan amounting to P1 million each.

Defensor said the two cities are in dire need of help especially that the disaster happened in time of the Yuletide season where the people are supposed to enjoy and celebrate. He said tragedy also struck Iloilo when typhoon Frank hit Western Visayas in 2008 where many local government units (LGUs) from other parts of the country also gave financial help.

President Benigno S. Aquino III already declared a state of national calamity due to the devastation brought by typhoon Sendong in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Dumaguete.

Under Republic Act No. 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction Management Act of 2010, a declaration of calamity means all agencies are mandated to impose remedial measures including the imposition of price ceilings on basic necessities and prime commodities. Agencies must also prevent overpricing, profiteering and hoarding of basic supplies such as medicines and petroleum products.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has placed the number of dead from tropical storm Sendong at 957 people. (PNA)

Metro Manila Development Authority sends team, water purifier to Iligan City.

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

AN AGENCY whose mandate only covers Metro Manila has sent a 19-person team, including a two-ton water purifier, a multi-cab vehicle, rescue dogs, and medical and rescue kits to Iligan City on Tuesday.

The team, the equipment, and the canines will arrive in Iligan in two days on board the Philippine Navy (PN) Logistic Supply Vessel BRP Bacolod City, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino said.

The team, which will stay in Iligan until December 28, is composed of personnel from its Road Emergency Group, including trained rescue staff, medical services assistants, and two mechanics.

The multi-cab vehicle will help the team in their rescue efforts.

"These personnel are experienced. They were also at Calumpit and Hagonoy after typhoons Quiel and Pedring," said Tolentino, adding they will help address the need for clean, potable water.

The teams sent by the local governments of Pasig and Makati will also bring rescue dogs.

Aside from helping in the rescue operations in last October's flooding in Bulacan and Pampanga, the agency during the time of former chairman Bayani Fernando also sent rescue teams in Kalibo, Aklan and Alaminos, Pangasinan when similar calamities occurred in 2008. (AH/Sunnex)

Miglani family looks to buy Global Steel Philippines

The Miglani family, co-promoters of Uttam Galva Steel, is looking at buying the distressed Global Steel Philippines, owned by Pramod Mittal, brother of L N Mittal, chairman of ArcelorMittal.

When contacted, Ankit Miglani, deputy managing director of Uttam Galva, confirmed the family was looking at the asset. “Uttam Galva is not looking at buying the company as there is no synergy between the two entities. It is the Miglani family that is looking at the asset. The due diligence is currently underway and it is premature to talk more about the deal at this point," he said.

IDBI is advising the Miglani family on the deal. Miglani said Global Steel Philippines has been on sale for a long time. Sources familiar with the development said Miglani visited Manila recently for negotiations.

In an emailed reply, Pankaj Agarwal, joint company secretary, Global Steel Holdings Ltd, said, "We can not disclose the desired information as arbitration proceeding relating to Global Steel Philippines (GSPI) is pending in Singapore between GSPI, GSHL and the office liquidator in Philippines and creditors of banks. Moreover, our company is a privately held company and therefore, it can not be disclosed in the public domain to protect the interest of the company... The matter as sub-judice, our actual position shall be appreciated in right and legal perspective."

Beng calls for more aid for CDO, Iligan
Wednesday, 21 December 2011

House Deputy Speaker for Mindanao and District 1 Rep. Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco calls for more assistance to help victims of typhoon Sendong in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities respectively.

Cong. Climaco has mobilized with non-government organizations in Zamboanga City to hasten relief operations and double the assistance to be sent to the affected areas.

“These cities are our neighbors and we see the devastation the typhoon left. Our coordination with city officials in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan together with their church leaders, call upon all of us, especially neighboring cities to help rebuild the lives of our brothers and sisters there. Through the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and our office in the first district, we have mobilized organizations to gather all donations so we can send them to the cities concerned,” Climaco expressed.

The city government has already expressed its assistance of P1million to each of the two cities through the efforts of Mayor Celso L. Lobregat. Climaco also forwarded relief goods and blankets to these areas and commended employees of a canning factory in the city of Zamboanga for contributing some amount and canceling their Christmas party in solidarity to the victims.

“I appeal for more donations to be sent to Ateneo de Zamboanga University and in our office. We do all possible means to extend our help to the victims of typhoon Sendong. Our help will truly make the season of giving meaningful. We continue to solicit for more food, blankets, clothes and water most especially as 80% of their water system had been contaminated,” the Deputy Speaker emphasized.

Rehabilitation will take some time and the need to put things back in order for the people in Cagayan and Iligan calls for a unified effort of everyone.

Climaco is set to head mobilization of more volunteer groups to continue the aid for the victims of typhoon Sendong. — Silvie Bandiola

Cebu City sends volunteer doctors, forensic medical examiners to Mindanao
By MARS W. MOSQUEDA JR.
December 21, 2011, 4:20pm

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Cebu City Government is ready to send its mobile morgues to Mindanao to assist in managing the remains of the victims recovered after the flash flood in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he will send the mobile morgue to Mindanao after learning from government officials of Cagayan and Iligan that the major problem of the said areas now is how to deal with the dead.

The mobile morgue, Rama said, will be used to help in the identification process of the victims that will be pulled out from the rubble and dirt as the city will also be sending volunteer doctors and forensic medical examiners.

The said mobile morgue was set up by the International Police during the height of the identification process of the victims of the ill-fated MV Princess of the Stars. It is in the mobile morgue that experts take out DNA samples and other identifiable marks from the victims' bodies to match them with the DNA samples of their relatives.

The mobile morgue is similar to what authorities used in identifying tsunami victims in Phuket, Thailand. It can be converted into a mobile clinic, mobile infirmary, mobile dental clinic, mobile office, mobile canteen, or a mobile storage space.

“As we had experienced before during the Princess of the Stars incident, we know that the smell of the dead bodies in due time will be beyond anybody can imagine. So we will help them,” Rama said.

Rama said the morgue will be deployed once the Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corp., which volunteered to ship the facility to Mindanao, is ready to do so.

For flood-hit areas: City dads okay P6M assistance
By Rene U. Borromeo (The Freeman) Updated December 22, 2011 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government is giving P6 million to three local government units badly affected by flooding last week.

This as the city council yesterday authorized Mayor Michael Rama to grant financial assistance for the flood victims in Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City, and the Province of Negros Oriental during a special session.

Officials of Cebu Province led by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia also announced plans to visit the flood-hit areas next week to personally hand their assistance.

Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young, presiding officer of the council, said P3 million will be given to Cagayan de Oro City, P2 million to Iligan City, and P1 million to Negros Oriental.

The city will be also spending P500,000 for the purchase of 100 caskets to be delivered to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan to help ease the shortage as around 1,000 have already been declared dead while hundreds still remain missing.

Gwen to visit Mindanao

Governor Garcia and some mayors will be visiting the flood-stricken cities after Christmas to personally bring their assistance.

Garcia said they will bring heavy equipment and personnel to help in the clearing operations.

The Province of Cebu will give P5 million each of the local governments of Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City and P1 million each of Dumaguete City and Tanjay City in Negros Oriental.

“Ako mismo moadto didto sa paghatud sa atong financial assistance usab nga gikan sa province, kuyugan pud ko sa mga mayor nga gusto gyud sad sila mokuyog para mohatag sad sila directly sa ilang financial assistance from each of their towns and cities,” Garcia told reporters yesterday.

Garcia said that some mayors will be giving part of their unused calamity funds to affected LGUs.

Asturias Mayor Allan Adlawan promised to give P100,000 to each of the affected LGUs.

Liloan Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco also announced to give P200,000 for Cagayan de Oro City.

During the occasion, Frasco asked all municipal employees to donate at least one item of used clothing for the typhoon victims.

The Province of Cebu has already sent 100,000 bottles of water; 3,000 sacks of rice; blankets, canned goods, sardines, noodles and assorted medicine to Iligan and Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao and the cities of Dumaguete and Tanjay in Negros Oriental.

Garcia said that the Province already paid P2.1 million to the National Food Authority for the rice.

Iligan and Cagayan de Oro each got 1,000 bags of NFA rice, 50 cartoons of sardines, 1,500 packs of bottled water, 20 boxes of assorted medicine, and a drum of chlorine.

The cities of Dumaguete and Tanjay, each also got 500 bags of NFA rice, 50 cartoons of sardines, 20 boxes of noodles, and 125 boxes of bottled water.

Two dump trucks are already in Iligan City to deliver the goods earlier shipped from Cebu.

Garcia is calling the Cebu contractors and the private sector if they could also lend their heavy equipment.

ABS-CBN Cebu is continually receiving donations for the victims of Sendong. A drop-off point for donations, cash or in kind, was put-up in Fuente Osmeña Circle in Cebu City on Monday.

For the past two days, ABS-CBN Cebu has been able to collect P1.4 million cash donations and P3 million worth of relief goods.

Palace to release P1B more for calamity fund; AFP saves P4M

Malacañang is releasing within the month an additional P1 billion to beef up this year’s calamity fund and “ensure the swift and continuous assistance to areas affected by Tropical Storm ‘Sendong,’” according to Budget Secretary Florencio B. Abad.

Abad said the additional fund would be covered by government savings and unreleased appropriations under the 2011 budget. He made the announcement a day after President Benigno Aquino III said there was still P1.17 billion left in the calamity fund for 2011.

“By plugging more resources into the calamity fund, we can guarantee full support of ongoing relief and rehabilitation activities in Sendong-affected areas, including Cagayan de Oro and Iligan (cities),” Abad said in a statement.

Also on Wednesday, other government agencies stepped up efforts to alleviate the plight of Sendong’s victims.

NFA opened 24/7

The National Food Authority (NFA) central office and its field operation centers in areas affected by Sendong will be open 24 hours to facilitate the release of rice for Sendong victims, according to NFA Administrator Lito Banayo.

Banayo said the new office hours would help ensure the smooth coordination in the release of rice to government agencies, particularly the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), which is in the forefront of relief operations in Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Bukidnon, Zamboanga provinces in Northern Mindanao and in Negros Oriental province in Western Visayas.

The NFA said some 4,000 sacks of rice had so far been released to the DSWD for this purpose.

PCSO subsidy

The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office also reminded patients who suffered injuries or ailments caused by Sendong that they may avail themselves of subsidized treatments in government hospitals in their respective areas.

In deference to the relief effort, the Armed Forces of the Philippines toned down this year’s AFP Day Parade at Camp Aguinaldo as it channeled its resources to the disaster areas.

AFP Chief of Staff General Jessie Dellosa scrapped the exhibition of 31 military aircraft. “We will channel whatever savings we will have to the calamity victims,” he said in a speech marking the AFP’s 76th anniversary.

On Dellosa’s orders, 19 military disaster response assets were pulled out from the parade and sent to help the Army’s 4th Infantry Division based in Cagayan De Oro City. He also canceled the traditional AFP ball, which would have had President Aquino as guest at the formal dinner.

P4M saved

Still, Wednesday’s parade saw the participation of around 1,000 troops, and the exhibition of 20 armored carriers and artillery assets and nine engineering vehicles. It also ended with a skydiving demonstration by 16 members of the AFP skydiving team.

The military saved about P4 million from the canceled portions of the celebration.

Abad said the remaining balance from this year’s calamity fund would be used to implement disaster-management and rehabilitation projects in the Visayas and Northern Mindanao, including Cagayan de Oro, Iligan City and the provinces of Negros Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental and Surigao del Sur.

The DSWD will get P521.2 million to spearhead early recovery services for victims in Negros Oriental, Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte. The amount will go to the construction of shelters, livelihood projects, and cash-for-work initiatives.

The Department of Public Works and Highways will get P208.6 million for the immediate repair of damaged bridges and roads in Negros Oriental and Lanao del Norte. With reports from Jaymee Gamil, Chona Yu, Radyo Inquirer 990AM

Dump trucks containing P2 million worth of groceries were sent by the Davao City Government to the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan Tuesday, along with four other vehicles to complete a ten-vehicle convoy. The remaining P1 million will be in cash.

Mayor Sara Duterte and Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte flew in two separate choppers and landed in Iligan City past 10 a.m, Wednesday. The two Dutertes then went to the Iligan City Hall to meet with Mayor Lawrence Cruz.

Inside Cruz's office, Mayor Duterte presented him one duffle bag containing P1 million in cash. This is aside from the three dump trucks -- full of groceries and bottled water that was transported from Davao City all the way to Iligan City.

After visiting Iligan, the Dutertes then flew to Cagayan de Oro City to meet with Mayor Vicente Emano. There, the Davao City officials also presented another duffle bag containing P1 million in cash to Emano for the Cagayan de Oro City to use in alleviating the plight of thousands of residents affected by Tropical Storm Sendong.

On Tuesday afternoon, another three dump trucks full of groceries and bottled waters were also endorsed by Magno Adalin to the Cagayan de Oro City Government as part of Davao City's donation to the flood victims.

The city have allotted a total of P4 million and not just P3 million for flood victims of Northern Mindanao, as a way of showing Dabawenyos' sympathy to the flood victims.

The University of St. La Salle shipped four crates of relief goods to residents of Iligan City, which was battered by Typhoon Sendong along with Cagayan de Oro City.

The initial shipment was sent via Negros Navigation, which offered to transport the goods free of charge, to La Salle Academy, whose students, faculty and staff were badly affected by the floods caused the typhoon.

The shipment included about 190 boxes of clothes, 80 boxes of assorted food items and bottled water, 20 boxes of medicines and two pallets of medical supplies, 71 pieces of mats and other goods.

The items were donated by members of the City of Bacolod and Lasallian communities under the Bulig Mindanao campaign launched by the University through the Center for External Relations.

CER Director Rhoderick Samonte said the campaign, which was started Dec. 19, also netted more than P210,000 in cash.

Donations came from various sectors of the Negrense community, among them, civic organizations, business establishments, families, individuals and even mall shoppers.

The donations were received, sorted and repacked by a team of volunteers from the USLS community, including officers of the college and Integrated School students governments who campaigned for donations from the holiday crowd at Robinsons Place.

The drive, originally planned until Dec. 24, will be extended up to Dec. 30 and will resume early January to provide an opportunity for students and faculty who are out-of-town during the holiday to also do their share for the victims of the Mindanao calamity, Director Samonte further said.

The University has set up a drop-in center, which accept donations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bacoleños raise P1.3M
for storm victims
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The Bacolod Cares project of the city government has raised P1.388 million as of yesterday, which include the P1.2 million allocation from the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management fund, Bacolod Councilor Em Legaspi-Ang said yesterday.

Ang, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Social Services, yesterday said there is already a big volume of non-cash donations such as water, rice, clothes, blankets, among others, and the biggest donation was from the Fa Tzang Temple that gave 250 boxes of mineral water, 35 sacks of rice, and 1,200 pairs of slippers.

She said they will ship the donated goods through Negros Navigation.

Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson said that during the executive-legislative caucus Wednesday, they decided that out of the P1.2 million budget, the city will give P500,000 to Iligan, P500,000 to Cagayan de Oro and P200,000 to Dumaguete.

Ang said they would like to thank all those who responded to their appeal for contributions. The social workers of the city will continue to accept donations at the city’s collection desks at the government center and City Hall, she said.

“I hope, somehow, through this, the typhoon victims will be able to feel the spirit of Christmas inspite of this adversity,” Ang said.

Authored by Councilor El Cid Familiaran, the resolution said the previous and recent calamities that had struck the country had damaged government critical infrastructure projects, agricultural and fisheries production and resulted in loss of livelihood, many lives and wastage of billions of pesos.

The SP also approved another resolution expressing profound sympathy to the people of Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City, Negros Oriental and other cities and provinces who suffered as a consequence of the disaster brought by tropical storm Sendong on December 17, 2011.

The resolution authored by Ang said Tropical Storm Sendong ravaged Mindanao, slamming it with devastating rains and unleashing flash floods and landslides that have left a horrifying trail of destruction.

Media reports said the death toll has reached 653 (1,026, as of Wednesday – ED), there are 245 injured and 807 reported missing. The cities of Cagayan de Oro with 346 deaths and Iligan with 206 deaths were worst hit by Sendong on Friday and Saturday, it said.

The national and local government officials of the affected local government units are appealing for immediate cash assistance, food, non-food items, services and prayers for the residents in the cities and provinces affected by Typhoon Sendong, the resolution also said.*CGS

Expect heavy rains especially over the recently flood-hit areas. All communities in rivers, steep slopes and river valleys are reminded to be vigilant.

God, make me brave for life: oh, braver than this.
Let me straighten after pain, as a tree straightens after the rain,
Shining and lovely again.

God, make me brave for life; much braver than this.
As the blown grass lifts, let me rise
From sorrow with quiet eyes,
Knowing Thy way is wise.

God, make me brave, life brings
Such blinding things.
Help me to keep my sight;
Help me to see aright

That out of dark comes light.

QUEZON CITY gov’t to give P5-M aid to ‘Sendong’ victims

A P5-MILLION financial aid will be given to the victims of Typhoon Sendong, particularly in the hard-hit areas of Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista said yesterday.

This was learned after the 26-member of the city council unanimously approved a resolution wherein the two cities will each receive a P1-million donation from the city government.

The remaining P3-million, on the other hand, will be provided by the city to support the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in its relief operations for other areas in the South affected by the killer floods brought by Typhoon Sendong.

Bautista said that the city’s donation shall be taken from the local disaster risk reduction management quick response fund.

Aside from the financial assistance, the QC government, through the social services development department, will also provide relief goods to families affected by flash floods brought about by Sendong.

Meanwhile, the office of the mayor will also solicit support from city hall employees for additional relief goods.

Upon instruction of the mayor, city administrator Victor Endriga has suggested that each employee may contribute a pack of relief goods consisting of a set of underwear (male or female), a piece/set of clothing for a child or adult and optional footwear.

According to the city administrator, all contributions/donations shall be submitted to the administrative officer of each department and shall be endorsed to the SSDD not later than Dec. 28.

“The very essence of Christmas is in sharing and in giving, so let us partake to share our blessings with our brethren in Mindanao,” said Endriga, in his memorandum circular.

The city government will organize a fund-raising concert at the Quezon Memorial Circle on Dec. 30 for the benefit of the victims of Typhoon Sendong.

So far, 1,010 have been confirmed dead by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council from the devastation brought about by “Sendong”.

The effect of the typhoon has also rendered homeless 44,213 individuals who are now staying in 60 evacuation centers, and displaced 232,187 individuals who are staying outside evacuation centers.

Dipolog donates relief goods for ‘Sendong’ victims in Iligan, Cagayan de Oro (http://pia.gov.ph/?m=7&r=r09&id=69818)
by Franklin P. Gumapon

DIPOLOG CITY, Dec. 27 (PIA) -- Right after the onslaught of tropical storm Sendong that left over a thousand people killed and missing in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro more than a week ago, the city government here led by Mayor Evelyn T. Uy immediately sent a truckload of relief goods for the victims of the calamity.

Reports released this week by the City Information Office (CIO) also disclosed that well-meaning residents here donated used clothing, slippers, kitchen utensils, blankets, medicines, rice, noodles and other relief goods to be brought and distributed to the flood victims in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City.

It was also learned that the city government is still accepting donations for the flood victims who lost their homes to a deluge wrought by Sendong that severely hit the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro last Dec. 17.

Media outfits operating in the city like the Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) and ABS-CBN have also been accepting relief goods for the victims.

Alumni of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) who are presently working or based in Zamboanga del Norte and the twin cities of Dipolog and Dapitan have also sent cash assistance for the victims through the Association of Iligan Institute of Technology Alumni Foundation, Inc. (AIITAFI) led by Prof. Darwin J. Manubag.

MSU-IIT alumni chapters here and abroad have been tapped and mobilized to help the flood victims in Iligan.

In a related development, City Councilor Apple Marie Acaylar-Agolong of Dapitan City also disclosed that the city government of Dapitan led by Mayor Dominador G. Jalosjos Jr. would be sending relief goods for 1,000 heads of affected families in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities. (NBE/FPG/PIA-Zambo. Norte)

It's been nearly two weeks since the flash flood brought by Tropical Storm Sendong killed so many of our fellow Iliganons. It caught all of us by surprise. And, depending on one's point of view, PAGASA, the source of official weather bulletins whom the National Government depend on, was caught with its pants down (http://www.typhoonk.com/sendong.htm) too.

Now while we wait for heads to roll, maybe we can refrain from interacting with puerile SSC members whose posts and online behavior only serve to illustrate the worst of a Filipino.

What we can do as responsible Iliganons is to accept the brutal facts, act with bold faith, and anticipate a brighter future. We owe it not only to ourselves, not only to the future generations, but also to the victims of this tragedy. The more than 400 dead will have died in vain if we do not stand up, unite, and act responsibly together so that this will be prevented from ever happening again.

Just recently I looked at these photos posted on the Facebook of Iligan City Government. These are shots taken during the visit of the UP Geologists. Credit to these images belong to the Iligan City Government.

Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

This time, instead of lighting up dangerous firecrackers, use the world‘safest firecracker containing the thundering sound of the most powerful firecrackers popular among revelers. :okay:

You don’t need a match but connect your computer to a good hifi sound speaker system to make it work and then watch this video below called “Goodbye Paputok: Safest Fireworks Experience” ..
listen and enjoy this safest firecracker…:angel1:
