ILIGANON WHIZ KIDS STANDOUT IN INDIA’S MATH TILTS
By: EAMayormita
CIO Press Release
December 18, 2006

Two Iliganon youth math wizards were among the Philippine team of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) that bested some 81 contingents worldwide during the December 1-8, 2006 India International Young Mathematicians’ Convention in City Montessori School (CMS), Lucknow, India.

DepEd-Iligan and City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz congratulate Rosauro Dividina of Integrated Developmental School, MSU-IIT, gold medalist in the mathematics competition, and Jim Darell Ang of Lanao Chung Hua High School, bronze medalist in the relay competition, who contributed to the Philippine team’s eight gold, five silver, three bronze medals and 4 merit awards.

I have talked with the parents of Rosauro at a party last night and I learned that the city govt. of Iligan did not give even a centavo to help finance the trip of Rosauro to India. Except for a few who has believed and helped them, the money used for the said trip came from the pocket of the Dividina Family. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! :bash:

Kaluoy sad. May unta maskin gamay lang unta gihatag. Education raba ang dako nga allocation sa city budget next year. Hope they can support other Iliganons who will compete abroad/nationals especially sa ilang travelling expenses. Maskin gamay atleast makatabang.

I really feel sad about this kind of things happening here in Iligan.

Northern Mindanao’s export development plan capitalizes on favorable climate, good infrastructure
by Evelyn @ 9:51 am. Filed under News, Business

The Regional Development Council of Northern Mindanao has adopted the Northern Mindanao Export Development Plan (NMEDP) 2007-2010 during its 73rd full Council Meeting held in Tangub City on Dec. 14, 206.

The plan which serves as the blueprint for all stakeholders in the export industry in attaining its target export growth for the next three (3) years, affirm s RDC-X’s support to the present administration’s thrust of making export the country’s main strategy for sustainable agri-industrial development.

With the government providing the backdrop of sustained and improved economic indicators, such as the strong peso now pegged at Php49.425 to US$1, the NMEDP outlines the unqualified support of the government sector to the export industry as it identifies strategies, programs and commits resources to various projects to make the region conducive to business promotion and growth.

As reported by Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of Iligan City, Chairperson of the RDC-X Economic Development Committee represented by Engr. Edwin Andot, President of CAFFINORMIN, Northern Mindanao is one of the fastest growing regions in terms of export growths contributing at least 21.13% in average annual growth rate (AAGR) in 2003-2005 compared to 6.17% national AAGR.

“Our top export products include Crude Coconut Oil, 23.6%, Canned Pineapple, 15.8%, Fatty Alcohol, 8.4%, Sintered Ore, 7.7% and Cochin Coconut Oil, 7.6%,” he said. The other top exports are Cold Rolled Steel, Cane Raw Sugar, Milk Powder, Frozen Shrimps/Prawns, Portland Cement, Desiccated Coconut and Kiln Dried Finished Lumber.

Cruz also said our exports market share are as follows: Europe, 22.58%, Japan, 14.46%, USA, 14.38%, China, 9.17%, Malaysia, 4.25% and Korea, 4.22%. Contribution of exports by province is: Misamis Oriental, 52.63%, Lanao del Norte, 41.44%, Bukidnon, 4.68%, Misamis Occidental, 1.23% and Camiguin, 0.02%.

Among NM’s comparative advantages is its strategic location as gateway to Mindanao and transshipment point to major and local markets, large agricultural export base due to available fertile lands suited to agriculture and rich aquamarine resources.

Other advantages is our favorable climate, good infrastructure, social capital/ strong local institutions and the presence of the Phivedec Industrial Estates and the Mindanao Container Terminal Port, Cruz added. (PIA 10 )

It appears that Iligan is now finally getting its acts together.

There is improvement of support facilities such as infrastructures, decongest traffic, efficient waste management to minimize the garbage problem, telecommunications and power supply, water and other essential urban services. The city government has been working overtime and was able to generate more revenues and increased collection. With its move toward agriculture, Iligan did not abandon its industries. The city government was also rejuvenating them. Hopefully, the combination of these promising developments will solidify and preserve the status of the city as one of the most competitive mid-size cities in the country. Somehow, the steps towards recommencing Iligan's prime have become evident with some signs of progress.

Maayong Iligan Kanatong Tanan!

MAAYONG ILIGAN KANATONG TANAN!!!

Maayong Iligan! conjures a very positive image of a good Iligan and engenders pride of our city. City government employees are now slowly but surely adopting said greeting with friends or in answering telephone calls or starting meetings. Some radio commentators are using it too. Hopefully, the rest of the private and the public sector catches up and adopts it too and start an Iligan Cultural Revolution of some sorts.

For indeed there are many good things happening for Iligan that we can all truly and sincerely say "Maayong Iligan!"

Maranaos go traditional in celebrating Eid'l Adha
Written by Bobby Timonera / MindaNews
Wednesday, 03 January 2007 11 09 40

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/02 Jan) -- Maranaos here observed the Eid'l Adha in a two-day celebration of traditional dances and games with participants in their colorful costumes. What apparently caught the public's attention was the sipa ("to kick") ball game that involved kicking a rattan ball like the takyan, but with so much force as the ball goes as high as 10 meters up in the air aimed at small colorful boxes three layers deep.

The Islamic world celebrates Eid'l Adha to mark the end of Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham among Christians) act of sacrificing his son, Ismail, for God.

Dr. Melchie Ambalong, who heads the city government's Office of Maranao, Higaunon and Other Cultural Communities (OMaHCC), said it was the first ever attempt in Iligan at holding an Eid'l Adha Festival, which began on New Year's Day.

Elsewhere in the Islamic world, the celebrations were held on Saturday, December 30.

Ambalong said that since the celebration has been institutionalized by the city government, it will thus be held regularly henceforth, but the date will vary on the Gregorian calendar. Ambalong, who has Maranao relatives, said the celebration is aimed at keeping the Maranao traditional dances and games alive.

Teenagers performed the singkil and other Maranao dances with their handwoven malongs while small boys played the sagayan, a war dance, with wooden swords. The older Maranaos, meanwhile, played the kulintang and the debakan (wooden drums).

But the sipa games gathered the most crowd at the Pryce Properties in Barangay Tubod.

The 18 men participating, mostly from the municipality of Butig in Lanao del Sur, wore silk long-sleeved shirts with intricate designs, malong tube skirts, and varied head gears. Strapped to the inner part of their right ankle is the dalapi used to hit the ball. The lower part is flat, the upper part shaped like a king's crown, sometimes adorned with okir carvings. They also carried a kandat, a whip-like device whose sole purpose is to make sound at the precise moment they hit the ball.

They played two versions -- the "sipa sa lama" and "sipa a manguis."

In the first game, the men gather in an open field (lama means playground) in a circle formation and take turns hitting the ball and keeping it on air as long as possible, the one nearest the descending ball shouting that he will take it.

Macapantao Langko Diamaodin, chair of the Maranao Sipa Cultural Organization of the Philippines, said it is some sort of a warm up before the main game, the "sipa sa manguis."

The manguis (literally means "sweet victory”) referred to is like the pabitin, but a lot bigger, with a lot more boxes hanging three layers deep, and perched up much higher, up to about 10 meters high. The game's intention is to hit as many boxes, but what counts are only the boxes that fall.

Bocari Dadayan, one of the sipa players, said that in a real game, each box in the first layer represents P300, P500 for the second layer, and P1,000 in the third. But there are four big boxes in each of the four corners in the first layer that are equivalent to P5,000 each. And felling the big box in the middle entitles one to one carabao.

Ambalong said that in this Eid'l Adha game, there was no such prize.

Diamaodin said that in the olden days, it was important for a Maranao male to learn how to play sipa.

"When a sultan wants her daughter to marry, only those who can play sipa will have the chance at winning the princess," he said. "During a game, the princess stays in a room up high. Kicking the ball through her window wins her heart," Diamaodin said. (Bobby Timonera/MindaNews)

A certain 30 hectare National Steel Corp property (soccer field area) has already been sited as Information Technology Park.

I read an article few years back about Central Business District Redevelopment. There is a plan to diffuse economic development from the limited CBD that currently exists. In order to address that problem Satellite Business Center Development Program was proposed. I'm not sure though if the city government is still pursuing this plan.

railway is only good for passegers especially if the demand for passenger trains increase. No more space for cargo trains... In fact most cargo's in europe are delivered by road... it is more efficient in terms of logistics.. no more hassles in offloading/loading/offloading again from train to truck to train to truck... :D u know what i mean. Highways still serves as a major backbone, i think esp if 1 hour travels become more common... i.e someone living in iligan has a job in CDO... it sounds like stupid but a lot of people here do that.. i dont know why. Lanao Norte PNP apprehends 30 people in illegal drugs

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (5 January) -- Lanao del Norte's campaign against illegal drugs resulted in the apprehension of some 30 personalities and the filing of 25 cases in court, last year.

The apprehensions, further, resulted in the confiscation of 11.35 grams of shabu from 24 operations of drug buy-bust, searches and raids conducted in the various parts of the province, P/Sr. Supt. Linog M. Bagul, Provincial Director of the Philippine National Police said.

The crackdown on "shabu" by the PNP should be lauded as it is effectively making the prices of the drug higher, thereby curtailing its market, he said.

On the other hand, the campaign against illegal gambling in the province resulted in the arrest of 13 suspects, the confiscation and recovery of 20 VKM, "suertres" paraphernalia, four (4) motorcycles, one (1) fax machine, three (3) sets of playing cards, Php18,160.50 cash bets and the filing of 11 cases in court.

Similarly, four (4) victims were rescued after 72 hours in two (2) kidnapping incidents that occurred in the province, last year, while it recovered 22 rustled animals, neutralized three (3) cattle rustlers and filed cases against the suspects in court.

Meanwhile, Bagul said the peace and order situation of Lanao del Norte was relatively normal despite threats posed by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Communist Party of the Philippines/New Peoples' Army (CPP/ NPA) operating in the province, during the period.

The situation materialized as a result of their massive coordination with some units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in the area to negate enemy terroristic/sabotage activities that the groups wanted to inflict on the government side.

"Despite its limited human and material resources, the province did its level best to carry out its assigned mission and functions to make it more responsive in its mandated tasks of law enforcement, maintenance of public safety and internal security with the active support of the community," he said.

For the whole year of 2006, Bagul said the province recorded a total of 262 crimes of which 110 were index and 152, non-index, down by 44 compared to 306 crimes, 144 index and 162 non-index, recorded in the previous year.

Out of the total crimes recorded, 230 were solved reflecting a crime solution efficiency (CSE) of 87.79%, up by 1.54% compared to 85.95% in 2005. (PIA 10)

Asa kaha dapit magtukod ug Flaza Fair diri sa Iligan? Maayo unta kung dako sad siya.

nag talk me ni mayor cruz, w/c my 2nd degree cousin he said dat the paza fair will be place in tibanga its still tentative pa ang place there still looking for a much bigger lot pa here... anyway wat can you say about the STC shopping center (at the bak of UNICITY), soooo panget, and its very sayang naa sila sa heart sa city dayon ang ila building kay panget, wala pa jud mga tindahan sa sulod kaayo...

You're right! Sayang ang lugar sa STC. The building looks like a big "bodega".

from that statement that means "yes, they are going to make an SM iligan" lol... and about the previous mayor about pampadul;as.. lol, yeah.. it has always been like that ever since.. ang mayor mangayu ug payment sa investor aha sila ma aprub... although theres no solif evidence ani, we can just speculate. Even the mayors before, mao daw nga wala nadayun ang coke na factory sa iligan kay mangayu ang mayor ug wawarts aha sila maka tukod dire... matay ning mga tawhana.. di angayan padaganun... pero ambut nganu kung nadaog.

So far, Kiko is doing very well :D i think he has done more things in his first term than the number of things the previous mayor has done with both of his terms lol

oh do you have any idea as to whereabouts, if ever, will they put SM???

the mayor kiko and the 1st lady is so nice, imagine that na pa gwapo nila ang ato public plaza, ang mga parks, they put up mga global light, na wala silana gasto kaaayo kay ang money ila ki gamit kay money sa prev. administration and aside from that ila padak-an ang public palza, itransfer man daw nila and police station sa lain na lugar... and the pres. GMA just donated a lot to the city for the building of the convention center here in iligan, as wat she said if luzon has PICC, visayas has CICC and Mindanao should have a IICC, and is a very big lot, but the city govt is still looking for relocation area for the squaters.

^^I hope the mayor would also consider upgrading "Tourism" of the city. There should be a tourism office nga accessible ug visible sa tanan ug complete sa mga facilities like Internet connection, tourist bus, information materials, tourist guides, souvenir shops, etc.

3 lanes x 2 = 6? i think 4 lanes(2 each bound) is enough.. Besides, manyhouses might be affected if the highway will be widened to 6 lanes from 2.

well, if the govt will push its plan to make a 6 lanes road, the families living near sa highway they have no choice but to move up... dba?

yes nindot na ato public plaza. pero IMHO it need more plants and tiled unta ang floors to add more color.

International jud kung IICC man gani. Ang ako hibal an ang ipangalan kay Macapagal-Macaraeg Convention Center. The lot will be sa timoga area.

P50-M water project built in Iligan City
By Richel V. Umel
Lanao Correspondent

ILIGAN CITY -- The P50 million water reservoir project at Phase IV in Luinab, Iligan City resolved the water crisis in five barangays of Iligan City, Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz said during the inauguration of the project Monday morning.

The water reservoir containing 650,000 galloons of water is expected to fully supply the five barangays of Luinab, Upper and Lower Hinaplanon, Pala-o and Del Carmen.

Cruz said the project is part of the vision of the City Government to provide sustainable supply of potable water.

The project was financed by the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), which responded the mandate of total development.

DBP Senior Vice-President for Mindanao Jose Gonzaga said the DBP will continue to extend support to the City Government in pursuing its development vision.

Luinab Barangay Captain Boy Agbay claimed that Iligan City has the lowest water rates in the entire country, which only cost P20 per cubic meter.

Another P4 million project to be undertaken will be done in response to the concreting of slope near the school campus near the hillside of water reservoir to avoid possible landslide. The water source came from upper Hinaplanon.

Alingatong, I am an Iliganon, now based in Cebu. I want to formally ask you and the few others who contributed pictures in our great city's threads, the permission to copy some of your photos in my Friendster's PhotoAlbum section. Do I actually have to ask permission when in case I started making photo albums already? Let me say instead, I want you to grant me formal authorization in copying some of your photos. I consider myself a proud Iliganon, and I want to, in my own little ways, promote our city to my fellows in Friendster. Never had the chance to get home to Iligan for more than a year already and I can't wait to smelling the Iligan breeze again. I just simply miss Iligan City a lot!

CIO Press Release
January 9, 2007

The Iligan City government’s Business One Stop Shop or BOSS program at the City Hall has started catering to local clients since the first working day of this year. Permits and Licenses Division Chief Carmen Magnaye announced that there are designated tables for local government offices and national government agencies at the third floor of the Legislative Building for this purpose.

Guidelines in print posted and a numbering system used make way for a more efficient process of securing business permits and licenses as the Permits and Licenses Division hopes to surpass the 4,494 renewals and 887 new applications recorded in the year that passed. Local business operators are urged to comply with their business requirements before the deadline to avoid inconvenience and penalties.

K-9 team strips suspected bomb
By Richel V. Umel

ILIGAN CITY -- An Iligan City K-9 and Explosive Ordinance and Disposal team disabled a suspected bomb left inside a well-guarded security bank last Tuesday afternoon along Quezon avenue here.

K-9 team leader Jun Garcia told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that at 5:30 p.m. they received an emergency call and upon arrival in the area they saw the guard on duty discovering a gift box wrapped with red Christmas wrapper.

The guard then carried the suspected box outside the bank before the K-9 team arrived.

Garcia requested the rescue team and the police to haul used tires to prevent possible splinters if ever an explosion may occur.

A few minutes later City Police Director Virgilio Ranes arrived in the area and suggested to transport the suspected bomb to an isolated area along with the used tires.

Garcia insisted on using a water disruptor device to disable the suspected bomb.

Garcia said the water disruptor composed of a 15-inch detonating cord, an electrical blasting cap, and water filled in an empty mineral water plastic container were used to extinguish any fires to be caused by an explosion.

An explosion was overheard within a 500 meters radius signaling that the dismantling process was successful and resulted in no injuries or damage within the perimeter.

The box contained powder and splinter materials of hardened clay, which investigators are still verifying.

Classes at St. Michael's College near Security bank were temporarily suspended to avoid a sudden commotion.

Later Garcia urged all establishments to be extra vigilant and report immediately to K-9 team and the police or military authority for immediate action.

Mayor Lawrence Cruz who went to the area had an urgent meeting with the police for further preventive security measure especially in public places.

At 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, the K9 team received a report on another suspected bomb near Victoria Bakery along Aguinaldo Street, Garcia added.

Garcia said they will investigate all reports amid preparations for the Asean summit in Cebu City.

Iligan City is a 1st class city in the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines, of which it was the province's former capital. It is approximately 800 kilometers southeast of Manila. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 399,061 people in 57,179 households.

Iligan City is bounded on the north by the municipality of Lugait, Misamis Oriental, to the south by the municipalities of Baloi and Linamon of Lanao del Norte, to the east by the territories of Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon, and to the west by Iligan Bay.

Known as the City of Majestic Waterfalls, it has approximately more than 20 waterfalls in and around Iligan. Among them is the magnificent Maria Cristina Falls, home of Mindanao's power source, and the Limonsodan Falls, Asia's highest waterfalls.

Iligan is also the Industrial Center of the South. It produces hydroelectric power for the Mindanao region through the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR), the site of the Mindanao Regional Center (MRC) housing Agus IV, VI and VII hydroelectric plants. It also houses industries like steel, tinplate, pulp and paper and flourmills. The National Steel Corporation, one of the largest steel manufacturers in the Southeast Asian region, now Global Steelworks International Incorporated was re-opened in 2003 after heavy setbacks resulting to its closure in 1999. Iligan along with its neighboring city, Cagayan de Oro City, are the two major components for the Cagayan-Iligan Corridor, the country's major development growth area in Mindanao.

Iligan City is not only rich in natural resources and industries but it is also the home of cultural mixes, Maranaos of Lanao del Sur, Higaonons of Bukidnon, settlers and migrants from other parts of the country. The climate is consistent year around since Iligan is outside the typhoon belt with an average temperature of just 22 degrees Celsius, and average rainfall of 109 mm per month.

To the west Iligan Bay provides ferry and container ship transportation. East of the city, flat cultivated coastal land gives way to steep volcanic hills and mountains providing the waterfalls and cold springs for which the area is well known.

People and culture
Iligan is predominantly Christian (93.61%). Iliganons are a mixture of the Muslim and Cebuano population with a bit of Tagalog and some other cultural group minorities and immigrants from other places.

Cebuano is the major dialect in the city (about 93%). The rest speak Tagalog, Maranao, Hiligaynon, Ilocano, Chavacano, and Waray-Waray. The majority of the population is fluent in English.

Major Industries

It has a 200 MW potential capacity which is the veritable source of industrial lines in the city.
Agus VII Hydroelectric Powerplant — (Barangay Maria Cristina; 8 kilometers from the city). The last among the seven sites located along the Agus river harnessed by NPC for power generation. It has a 54 MW potential capacity.
National Steel Corporation (now Global Steel Philippines Incorporated) — (Barangay Suarez; 6.5 kilometers from the city proper). Then manned only by three personnel and involved in the study of copra business feasibility and the coconut industry. Granex produces crude coconut oil and pellet. When the copra supply was abundant, the company decided to expand with the crushing of Iligan Coconut Oil Mill from 500 to 1,000 MT in 1979, which made Granex Manufacturing the Biggest Coconut Mill in the world.
Pilmico Food Corporation — (Barangay Kiwalan; 9.0 kilometers from the city proper). Primarily engaged in the manufacture of wheat, flour and its related products like wheat germ (active). Aboitiz and company which originally thought of venturing into the flour milling business were the original incorporators, later joined by the Soriano group of Companies, and finally the Pillsbury of Minnesota. History
Iligan has its beginnings in the village of Bayug, 2.5 kilometers north of the present Poblacion. It was the earliest pre-Spanish settlement of native sea dwellers, known as Maragats. The monotony of indigenous life in the territory was broken when in the later part of the 16th century, the inhabitants of Iligan were subdued by the Visayan migrants from the island kingdom of Panglao.

In the accounts of Jesuit historian Fr. Francisco Combes, the Mollucan King of Ternate invaded Panglao. This caused Panglaons to flee in large numbers to Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte. In Dapitan, the surviving Prince of Panglao, Pagbuaya, received Legazpi's expedition in 1565. Later, Pagbuaya's son Manook was baptized Pedro Manuel Manook. The Christianized Manook subdued the Higaunon village in Bayug and established it as one of the earliest Christian settlements in the country. The settlement survived other raids from other enemies, and, because of their faith in God and in their patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel, the early Iliganons moved their settlement from Bayug to Iligan.

The name Iligan is from the Higaunon word "iligan" or "ilijan," meaning "fortress of defense" against frequent attacks by pirates and other hostile Mindanao tribes.

In 1850, because of floods, Don Remigio Cabili, then Iligan's governadorcillo, built another fort and moved the poblacion of the old Iligan located at the mouth of Tubod River west of the old market to its present site.

A stone fort called Fort St. Francis Xavier was built in 1642 where Iliganons sought refuge during raids by bandits. But again, the fort sank due to floods. Another fort was built and this was named Fort Victoria or Cota de Iligan.

The Spaniards abandoned Iligan in 1899, paving the way for the landing of the American forces in 1900. In 1914, under the restructuring of Moroland after the end of the Moro Province (1903-1913), Iligan became a municipality composed of eight barrios side-by-side the municipal district of Mandulog. After enjoying peace and prosperity for about 40 years, Iligan was invaded by Japanese forces in 1942. The Japanese held sway in the city until 1944 when they left Iligan suddenly. On November 15, 1944, the city held a Commonwealth Day parade to celebrate the end of Japanese atrocities and occupation.

Using the same territorial definition as a municipality, Iligan became a chartered city of Lanao del Norte on June 16, 1950. It was declared a first class city in 1969 and was reclassified as First Class City "A" on July 1, 1977 by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 465. In 1983, Iligan was again reclassified as a highly urbanized city.

CITY TOURISM DEVELOPMENTS
By: EAMayormita
CIO Press Release
January 11, 2007

Iligan City’s thriving tourism industry has reported a total of 70,910 registered foreign and domestic tourists from January to October of 2006. Tinago Mountain Resort visitors alone reached 17,801 since its return to full operation last June. The city government’s Program of Works for the development of Mimbalot Falls is also hoped to help boost local tourism in the future.

The City Tourism Office continues to welcome local residents who have extra rooms in their homes and willing to earn additional income by accommodating tourists to register under the “Iligan Homestay Association” (IHA) which aims to cater to visitors who express their preference to stay in houses of locals than in hotels or commercial inns. This is also to heed the call of the Department of Tourism to give tourists safety, security and convenience during their stay as per the DOT’s Executive Order No. 120. Eight have already enlisted under the IHA in the past three years and interested parties are invited to visit the City Tourism Office, Bahay Salakot, Buhanginan Hills, Pala-o, this city or call 221-3426 for details.

CCCI reviews tourism plans, ‘difficult’ targets

THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) is rethinking the way it will move forward with the Cebu Plus, the tourism roadmap it launched in 2005 with the aim of bringing five million tourists to Cebu and its neighboring islands by 2010.

“When we evaluated it after a year, we found that some of the targets are not attainable, and some will have to be coordinated with some agencies, so it can’t be done by CCCI (alone),” said Dr. Mila Espina, chairperson of the tourism committee of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry of which Cebu Plus is a special project.

“But we’re still targeting the five million tourists in 2010,” she told Sun.Star Cebu last Monday.

Espina said Cebu Plus would remain a conceptual framework, but it would now be more of “a collation of what others are planning to do and what we (CCCI) could do.”

Focus

From hereon, the CCCI will just focus on the more short range and attainable aspects of the Cebu Plus.

For instance, the CCCI is helping in the efforts to instill the culture of tourism in Cebuanos and in the training of drivers. It is also supporting the Suroy-Suroy sa Sugbo, a program to showcase the attractions of the various towns in Cebu.

Cebu Plus is a tourism roadmap launched by the Cebu Tourism Core Group of the CCCI in June 2005. It aims to get and disperse five million tourists into 15 tourist clusters that are just a few hours’ travel from Cebu City annually by 2010. Of the five million tourists, 3.5 million would be foreign tourists.

These tourism clusters are Cebu/Mactan, Southeast Cebu (Carcar to Oslob/Mantalongon), Southwest Cebu (Badian/Pescador/Moalboal), North Cebu (Bogo, San Remegio, Bantayan, Malapascua), Northeast Cebu (Danao, Carmen, Camotes), Bohol, Dumaguete/Siquijor, Boracay, Bacolod/Iloilo, Palawan, Tacloban/Guiuan, Surigao/Siargao, Zamboanga/Iligan/Dipolog, Camiguin/Cagayan de Oro, and Legaspi/Sorsogon.

The roadmap is anchored on the McKinsey Report’s eight critical factors for tourism product development: air access, accommodations, security, environment, infrastructure, local access, tourism clusters and attractions.

Espina said the problem of attaining its targets became clear when topics like flyovers and boardwalks were raised. These are projects that the CCCI cannot decide and act on by itself.

^^ All i know is that part of the AMS Corporation’s (of the Soriano Group of Companies) 3,000-hectare agricultural land for a Cavendish banana plantation for its export business will be in Brgy. Digkilaan and some parts of Brgy. Mainit (upper right of Brgy. Digkilaan. See map).

The Proposed Central Materials Recovery Facility will also be in Brgy. Bonbonon

Most likely agri-industrial gihapon...
